(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker’s campaign spread $2.5 million late last week to campaign coffers aimed at helping Democrats in the legislature and Cook County. Campaign finance reports show Pritzker gave $1 million to the Democratic Majority fund, which is chaired by House Speaker Michael Madigan and is used to assist Democratic House members and candidates. Another $1 million was headed to two different funds aimed at helping Democrats in the state Senate — $500,000 apiece to the Senate Democratic Victory Fund headed by Senate President John Cullerton and the Illinois Democratic Heartland Committee, which assists Downstate Senate Democrats. Pritzker, a billionaire heir to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, also dropped $500,000 to the Cook County Democratic Party, which is now headed by County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Democrats are counting on Pritzker to help down-ballot candidates in much the same way that his opponent, Republican Gov. Rauner, has done in subsidizing the state GOP and Republican legislative candidates.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There’s one graphic that perfectly captures the absurdity of Illinois pensions over the past three decades. It’s what Justice Samuel Alito described as Illinois’ “generous public-employee retirement packages” when writing for the majority in the Janus v. AFSCME decision. Alito didn’t use this graphic but he could have, because it makes his point. In 1987, pension promises made to active workers and retirees in the state’s five state-run pension plans totaled just $18 billion. By 2016, they had ballooned to $208 billion. That’s a cumulative 1,067 percent increase. Contrast that to the state’s budget (general fund revenues) which was up just 236 percent over the same time period. Or household incomes, which were up just 127 percent. Or inflation, up just 111 percent. Promised pension benefits have blown past any ability of the state, the economy or taxpayers to pay for them.)

Liberal judges tend to apply pluralistic conditions to their considered opinions. Judicial activism would proliferate in the guise of “righting historical injustices” and, in particular, redressing America’s “original sin” — slavery. If Trump succeeds in appointing a conservative justice, for example, the court effectively would rule against any legislative efforts to have America – meaning the taxpayer – pay some $4.1 trillion to African Americans related to the impact of slavery, as David Horowitz outlines in his 2016 book, “Progressive Racism. ”A liberal Court would see this controversial issue very differently than a conservative Court. And some supporters of reparations already have mapped a way for descendants of slaves to receive some form of compensation. Bruce Rauner, who barely escaped an embarrassing defeat in the March primary, needs a united Republican Party behind him if he’s going to defeat his well-heeled Democratic opponent, J.B. Pritzker, in the November election. But that is looking more and more difficult. As time passes, estranged conservatives appear more determined to see Rauner lose and Pritzker win. Two recent events demonstrate the problem Rauner has. Conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton almost ended Rauner’s dream of a second four-year term in the primary. Rauner received just 51 percent of the primary vote to 49 percent for Ives. Despite that, some Republican leaders hoped that Ives might be persuaded to support Rauner in the general election. After all, if Pritzker wins, Democrats will regain total control of state government and her political party will be relegated to the irrelevant status it endured from 2003 to 2015, when the GOP captured the governor’s office. But time has not healed the sting of defeat for Ives. Asked last week about her intentions, an embittered Ives indicated there is no way she’ll endorse Rauner. “No. I’m not going to endorse the governor. I’m going to let him buy back his voters,” she said. Ives’ differences with Rauner are strictly ideological. A social conservative, she deeply resented Rauner’s decision to sign legislation authorizing taxpayer-funded abortions. Ives is not alone, as demonstrated by the strong support she received in the primary. To make matters worse for Rauner, there’s state Sen. Sam McCann of Plainview. He’s masquerading as a conservative disenchanted with Rauner. But for him, this is strictly business.)
