I had not started the car for almost 9 years. Most of D&M’s bill was for repairing damage that ethanol did to car’s entire fuel system. The master cylinder and four calipers were replaced, A/C was charged, carburetor was rebuilt and fuel pump replaced, minor electrical and mechanical problems were fixed, five new tires were installed, new battery was installed, etc. I could have avoided much if not all of the fuel system and brake problems if I had driven the car more – at least once each summer. But my excuse for not starting the car since 2009 is that since 2004, I have spent 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.)

The master cylinder and four calipers were replaced, A/C was charged, carbonator was rebuilt and fuel pump replaced, minor electrical and mechanical problems were fixed, five new tires were installed, new battery was installed, etc. I could have avoided much if not all of the fuel system and brake problems if I had driven the car more – at least once each summer. But my excuse for not starting the car since 2009 is that since 2004, I have spent 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.)

AARP surveyed 3,900 people age 45 and older who were working full-time or part-time or looking for work and learned that more than nine in 10 older workers see age discrimination as common. And 61% say they’ve personally seen or experienced it. Women are more likely than men to have seen or experienced age discrimination, according to the survey. More than three quarters of African-American respondents, 60% of Latinos and 59% of whites reported seeing or experiencing it. What AARP Says About Age Discrimination “Older workers want to work, they’re ready to work and they need to work,” said Susan Weinstock, AARP’s vice president of financial resilience. “They should have the opportunity to be judged on their merits, rather than their age.” But the survey results strongly suggest older job applicants routinely are denied that opportunity. Since turning 40, a striking 30% of respondents experienced at least one of these six actions and 17% experienced two or more: not getting hired for a job they applied for because of their age; heard negative remarks related to their older age from a colleague; passed up for a chance to get ahead because of their age; heard negative remarks related to their older age from a supervisor; were laid off, fired or forced out of job because of their age or were denied access to training or professional development opportunities because of their age. Among respondents who’ve applied for a new position in the past two years, 44% said they were asked for age-related information such as birth dates and graduation years. Such information is often used to discriminate against older applicants and requests for it discourage many older workers from applying, according to AARP. Fears of Getting Hired After a Job Loss About one third of the survey respondents said they doubted they’d be able to quickly land another job if theirs was eliminated. Almost half of them said the major reason would be age discrimination. Government data shows that nearly one third of workers 55 and older who lose their jobs are unemployed a financially-dangerous six months or more. By contrast, just 18% of those ages 16 to 54 are out of work similar periods. The AARP survey also suggests that most older workers don’t think they have much protection against age discrimination. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Twice since 2013, voters in the Wheaton and Warrenville area have rejected referendum proposals to raise taxes for the construction of a new preschool. Despite that, the Community Unit School District 200 board is proceeding with building a new Jefferson Early Childhood Center without voter approval through a different form of financing. But now a resident who opposes that measure has sued the district in DuPage County Circuit Court, seeking to halt the plans. Those in favor of building a new childhood center call the current 26,500-square-foot building outdated and note that the district in recent years has renovated or built anew every other school building except Jefferson. Jefferson, which was constructed in 1958 and had 277 pupils as of June, offers a traditional preschool and early childhood intervention for youths with mental or physical disabilities. Voters rejected a referendum proposal for a new Jefferson school in 2013, and again said no in 2017 as part of a much larger, $132 million proposal involving other district schools as well. Board President Jim Vroman said that after the 2017 referendum proposal failed, the district surveyed voters and found that “a substantial majority” supported building a new Jefferson. “That told us that voters were against the tax increase that the referendum would have generated if we had proceeded,” he said. Instead, the board agreed with a suggestion by a district financial adviser to use lease certificates, or secured lease credit financing, to fund a new Jefferson. District 200 would oversee construction of the estimated $15.5 million, 41,544-square-foot building, while Zions Bank would own the building. . .Frequent board critic Janet Shaw, who runs a blog that scrutinizes the district’s finances, long has questioned the legality of using lease certificates and added that “my real problem is that we don’t need (the new school building).” Shaw has filed suit against District 200, demanding a halt to the current plan to finance a new Jefferson. She is seeking a judge to require District 200’s board to submit a proposal for the new school building to the public via a referendum question. “District 200 is tampering with election results right here in DuPage County,” Shaw said. “The district thinks that by using the magic word ‘lease,’ its two failed referendum efforts and the will of the community are somehow erased and it can proceed in an identical manner as if a referendum had been adopted by the community to build and finance a new school.” A district spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The University of Wisconsin System violated federal law when it refused to hire a former longtime employee because of her age, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed. According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, Bambi Butzlaff Voss, who was 53 years old and subject to a layoff from her job as a Marketing and Communications Specialist at the University of Wisconsin’s Waukesha campus, applied for six different positions with the University of Wisconsin System’s central office in Madison, including an Associate Marketing and Communications Specialist position. Butzlaff Voss had 25 years of experience performing tasks similar, if not identical, to the ones in the position she applied for. But, because of Butzlaff Voss’s age, the University refused to hire her. Instead, it hired a 23-year-old candidate with less than two years of experience. Such alleged conduct violates the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA). The EEOC sued in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (EEOC v. Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System, Civil Action No: 3:18-cv-00602) after first trying to settle through its conciliation process. The lawsuit asks the court to order the University to hire Butzlaff Voss and provide back pay as well as pay liquidated damages. The lawsuit also seeks a permanent injunction prohibiting the University from discriminating against future candidates based on their age. “The Age Discrimination in Employment Act has been on the books for five decades,” said Gregory Gochanour, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Chicago District. “The EEOC will make sure employers follow the law, even if it means going to court to get the message across.” Julianne Bowman, district director of the EEOC’s Chicago District, said, “Workers over 40 years of age should have the same opportunities as those workers less than half their age. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Its a nearly-new fuel pump from a 2003 Harley Davidson with just 11,000 miles on it. How could that much corrosion happen on a motorcycle before it’s third oil change? According to my mechanic it’s ethanol in our gasoline. To understand how this happens you need to know how ethanol affects your fuel system. Ethanol itself is not particularly corrosive. When the oil companies first started blending ethanol in gas, it corroded some rubber and plastic gaskets on some cars and equipment. Manufacturers figured it out and substituted new materials. The unlucky consumers whose equipment was ruined or whose fuel systems had to be replaced just took it on the chin as per usual with most government programs. But that wasn’t the end of it. Ethanol attracts water. When the two get together, they create the perfect environment to grow a type of bacteria called acetobacter. After getting drunk on their EPA-sponsored kegger in your gas tank, the acetobacter excrete acetic acid. And acetic acid is very corrosive. If you’re refilling your gas tank every week or two, acetobacter don’t have time to grow a sufficient size colony to damage metal parts in your fuel system. But if your fuel sits for longer periods of time these microorganisms continue to multiply until your gas tank contains damaging levels of acetic acid.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Metropolitan Planning Council ruffled some fur recently when it concluded in a report on census data that African-Americans are only partially sharing in downtown Chicago’s job boom. The council is right. Though one can argue that the glass is half full rather than half empty, fact is that in a time when overall downtown jobs grew 10 percent, the number held by blacks was up 2 percent. That’s certainly better than the 7.5 percent drop in Chicago’s black population in the same period, but not good enough. One obvious solution to that is better education. If young adults who now are trapped in declining neighborhoods get the right schooling and can tap into the right networks, they ought to be able to get more of these jobs. This is what was discouraging about another report that landed in my inbox a few days ago, concluding that Chicago public schools that are heavily black and Latino aren’t offering the same rich selection of college-prep courses as schools with more white students.)

On Monday, there was yet another display that their top boss is hopelessly unsuited for the White House with President Trump’s obsequious behavior in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump undermined federal employees who reported Putin’s attack on the 2016 presidential election. On Tuesday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee approved two measures that would speed the firing of feds by weakening civil service protections. On Thursday, the House effectively dumped on raising pay for federal employees in 2019 by passing an appropriations bill that included no increase. While the workforce and the rest of us are stuck with Trump for at least two more years, the House actions are not the final word on pay and disciplinary measures. . .House Republicans also don’t care for the current level of federal employees’ civil service protections. Two bills approved by the Oversight Committee with party-line votes would allow management to fire feds faster by weakening their workplace due-process rights. The measures require full House and Senate action before becoming law. One bill would accelerate disciplinary procedures, including termination, by cutting time allowed for appeals. The general probationary period for feds would double to two years, allowing more time to take disciplinary action against new employees who have fewer rights. Another piece of legislation would lower the burden of proof that managers need to fire workers, among other provisions. “Working for the United States federal government is an honor and a privilege, and most federal employees value the opportunity and work hard to serve the American people,” Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) said following the committee vote. “However, some federal employees have learned they can use the system to protect their jobs regardless of their poor performance or bad behavior.” He called the committee’s action “a huge step to creating a more efficient and effective government that works for the people, streamlining the process and lessening the time it takes to dismiss poor performing or negligent employees.” Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (Md.) the ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, disagreed. In 1980, when I was 31 years old, I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars (from GS-12 Step 5 down to GS-9 Step 10) to transfer from IRS to GAO. QUESTION: Why did I do that? ANSWER: GAO claimed to be nonpartisan and independent. My Democrat IRS superiors and Money Magazine had ruined my IRS career. GAO employees are somewhat less demonized, denigrated, and condemned than IRS employees are. Because GAO audits IRS, I could use my knowledge of IRS on audits of IRS. I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. The GAO staff manager who hired me was confident that he could a) promptly get me assigned to audits of IRS and b) promptly promote me to GS-11 Step 10, currently $87,933, to GS-12 Step 5, currently $91,880, and to GS-13 Step 1, currently $96,403. But soon after I transferred to GAO, that GAO manager was deposed and he was not able to promote me to GS-11 Step 10 until 1981, to GS-12 Step 5 salary until 1982, and to GS-13 Step 1 until 1986. In 1986, he finally succeeded in getting me assigned to audits of IRS. In 1987, his Democrat superiors succeeded in forcing him to retire. To justify their forcing me to take a pay cut to transfer from IRS to GAO, my Democrat GAO superiors dismissed/belittled/badmouthed/demonized/denigrated/condemned a) my knowledge of IRS, b) my passing the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, c) my almost completing the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul and then my earning that degree in 1980, and d) my earning an MBA from Loyola in 1976.
