http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171124/ISSUE05/171129949/gop-tax-bill-one-turkey-that-shouldnt-be-pardoned
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But when it comes to individuals, congressional leaders like Illinois’ own Peter Roskam say, trust us—we’ll fix the tax code (later) and make sure that individual rates don’t increase. But don’t individuals who have to pay mortgage expenses, college bills, retirement and any number of things need to plan just as much as IBM does? I’d have more faith in this scheme if Congress made the individual rates permanent and corporate rates temporary. But then the big corporate donors who fuel the GOP wouldn’t buy it. Neither should you. Then there’s the disappearing exemption for state and local taxes, which the House wants to limit to $10,000 for home property taxes and the Senate would totally abolish. However you peddle it, this is a big diversion of resources from relatively high-tax states such as Illinois to lower-tax areas such as Texas (home to the chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee), which wants billions of our tax dollars to rebuild after yet another hurricane. Republicans used to oppose double taxation. But under these bills, money that’s already been snarfed up by local governments would be fully subject to federal income taxes. More: Interest payments on the kids’ college loans would no longer be deductible under the House bill. Many homeowners would lose out on deductions for interest on home mortgages. And to boot, to pay for corporate cuts, individual tax brackets would be adjusted for inflation differently with the effect that over the next decade, at least 20 percent of any tax cut would disappear for everyone earning under $200,000 a year, according to the Wall Street Journal.)

CBS NEWS
— GAO: A harsh financial reality facing retirees – STEVE VERNON (DIERSEN: What percent is or will be your retirement income of your preretirement income? My $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System pension is only 41 percent of ending GAO salary of $122,991 in today’s dollars. That is a) because my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) because my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) because my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/a-harsh-financial-reality-facing-retirees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s a discomforting point made at the very beginning of a recent landmark report titled “The Nation’s Retirement System”: “Most financial advisers say retirees will need 70 percent or more of preretirement earnings to live comfortably.” Unfortunately, many older workers and retirees will fall far short of this goal. The report, prepared by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), goes on to say one-third of households headed by someone age 65 and over received 90 percent or more of their retirement income from Social Security. That’s a problem because Social Security replaces only about 40 percent of an average wage earner’s income after retiring. According to Social Security’s “Fast Facts” publication, 62 percent of retirees received at least half of their income from Social Security in 2015. These numbers reveal the harsh reality facing most older workers and retirees: They’ll need to learn to live on income that’s a lot less than what financial planners commonly recommend. That result may be undesirable, depending on your circumstances, resiliency and resourcefulness. . .Many older Americans will need to adjust their lifestyle in one or more of these ways: Spend less Save more Work longer Stay healthy to keep working and not drain savings on medical bills Make smart choices to stretch every dollar These necessary action steps are the reality of retirement in 21st century America.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Almost all of the growth in top American earners has come from just three economic sectors: professional services, finance and insurance, and health care, groups that tend to benefit from regulatory barriers that shelter them from competition. The groups that have contributed the most people to the 1 percent since 1980 are: physicians; executives, managers, sales supervisors, and analysts working in the financial sectors; and professional and legal service industry executives, managers, lawyers, consultants and sales representatives. Without changes in these largely domestic services industries — finance, health care, the law — the United States would look like Canada or Germany in terms of its top income shares.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress that I give little or no money to the aforesaid. In my defense, a) my $50,856/year Civil Service Retirement System pension is only 41% of what my $122,991/year GAO salary was in 1997 in today’s dollars; b) my Social Security is only $2,028/year; c) my and my wife’s medical and dental expenses last year were $21,433, our state and local taxes were $14,303, and our 501(c)(3) contributions were $2,728; and d) the GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails that I send out each and every morning and each and every evening to the aforesaid free of charge and without any advertising are worth at least $1,000/year. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-jeanne-ives-illinois-governor-20171117-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: That information was revealed Thursday, when Ives showed 15 donations — with the top ones coming ahead of a high-dollar fundraiser scheduled for Monday at a Downers Grove restaurant. Vince Kolber, a Chicagoan who founded a transportation leasing business and twice unsuccessfully ran for Congress as a Republican, was the top donor to the Ives for Illinois fund with $100,000. Kolber is the chairman of Ives fundraising event and previously has given the three-term lawmaker from Wheaton $1,500 in November 2015, records show. Ives also reported $50,000 from William Dixon of Wheaton, the founder of a trade-show exhibition firm. Dixon and wife Barbara are listed as co-chairs of the fundraiser, a title that carries a $50,000 price tag. Previously, they had given Ives a total of $19,000 since March 2012. Ives also tapped into her legislative campaign fund for $25,000 and got similar-sized donations from Peter Huizenga and Elizabeth Weiss. A $25,000 contribution merits the title of “underwriter” of the fundraiser. Of Ives’ donors, Kolber gave $13,000 to Rauner for his 2014 race for governor post-primary, and another $1,000 on June 29 of this year. William Dixon gave Rauner $500 in September 2014, and Huizenga gave Rauner $20,000 in May 2014. Rauner had nearly $65.6 million in his campaign fund at the end of September and has since added $116,100.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/17/your-money/tax-bills-accountants.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If only that were easy to figure out. We know that nearly a quarter of households with incomes between $100,000 and $500,000 would see their tax bills go up next year under the Senate’s proposal. Compared with current law, the House bill, which was passed Thursday, would raise personal federal income taxes on California, New Jersey, New York and Maryland residents by $16.7 billion in 2027, according to an Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy analysis. Florida and Texas, however, would get $31.2 billion in cuts. Still at a loss? If you’re hoping that TurboTax will rerun your 2016 data or scan your 1040 and spit out constantly updating projections based on the House bill or the evolving Senate proposals, its owner, Intuit, will not do that for you. At first, TurboTax’s spokeswoman, Lisa Greene-Lewis, told me via email that it was “premature to speculate or second guess the decisions policymakers will make.” When I pressed further, wondering about the people who want to be well-informed citizens and decide whether to cheer or jeer their elected representatives while it might still make a difference, she got on the phone and simply told me that the company would be creating only tools based on current laws. And so, we turn to the accountants. Pity them, because for at least the next month, theirs will be a world of what-ifs and if-thens. Already, many are receiving multiple messages each day from clients.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Reid McCollum, a leader of the Coalition for a Better Illinois 6th, said the proposed tax plan was the primary reason for the protest. “There’s not one thing in that bill for the middle class,” said McCollum, who specifically criticized the proposal to eliminate state and local tax deductions. The tax plan also would increase the federal deficit by as much as $1.7 trillion and lead to massive cuts to services and programs such as Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid, opponents said.)

http://foxillinois.com/news/local/graduate-students-rally-against-tax-reform-bill
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The act is focused on providing tax relief, but graduate students said for them it would have the opposite effect. U of I graduate student, Jason Rock, said the act would eliminate tax exemptions for teaching and research assistants’ tuition waivers. “A tuition waiver is essentially a coupon for making their tuition-free,” Rock said. A tuition waiver tax is something many graduate students said they can’t afford. “I’m out here because without my tuition waiver I won’t be able to stay in graduate school,” graduate student Andy Bowman said. “And that’s true for my friends here today.” Rock said if the tuition waiver tax becomes law, it could change the post-graduate educational opportunities for students now and in the future. “There will be a significant number of graduate students that have to drop out,” Rock said. “Ultimately graduate school would only be something wealthy people can do.” Protesters called on Congressman Rodney Davis, just hours after the House voted the bill forward. Congressman Davis voted in favor of the bill. “Today we lost Representative Davis,” graduate student Emily Rodriguez said. “13 other members of his caucus did not vote for this tax reform bill, but our Representative folded like a lawn chair,” Congressman Davis said he doesn’t support the tuition waiver tax, but he does support other parts of the bill. Especially the tax reforms that would benefit middle-class families and small businesses. The Congressman’s office responded to the rally in a statement by saying, “Congressman Davis has fought hard to protect these benefits and Chairman Brady has committed to working to fix them when we get to conference with the Senate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I was given a booklet from Haggai International Ministries called “What in the World is Going On?” It presents the changing demographics of faith around the globe. Here are some interesting findings: 100 years ago the geographical picture of Christianity was pretty simple: most Christians lived in the U.S. and Europe. Everywhere else was unreached. In 1900, 83 percent of the world’s Christians were in “the west.” Today, in 2017 only 34 percent of the world’s Christians are in the west, (i.e. areas like Europe, North America and Australia). Now 66 percent of the world’s Christians are in Latin America, Africa and Asia. By 2050 those numbers are expected to be 24 percent in the west and 76 percent in Latin America, Africa and Asia. While Christianity is on the decline in the U.S., it is on the rise in the former USSR, China and large portions of Africa. Today 25 percent of the Christians in the world live in Africa and 25 percent live in Latin America. On any given Sunday there are more Christians worshiping in China than in the United States. Muslims are increasingly mobile. Where they go, Islam goes. As Christians have fled from areas of the Middle East, Islam has moved in. In Jesus’ birthplace of Bethlehem the current population is 80 percent Muslim. 75 percent of the world’s population lives in areas with religious restrictions. Approximately one in 12 Christians today experience persecution. Of the world’s 7.5 billion people, 2.4 billion (33 percent) profess to be Christians. However, one in four people in the world have never heard the Gospel message.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now that vision is threatened. That choice you have to use the Web for whatever you want could be taken away. Today, one of the greatest threats to the Web in America is the plan by the Federal Communications Commission to roll back America’s open Internet safeguards. Net neutrality is the fundamental principle that all content should be treated equally online. It’s what ensures those millions of local businesses can compete on an equal footing with corporate giants. It’s what stops Internet and cable providers from slowing down services for those who don’t pay a premium, or blocking content that doesn’t boost their own bottom lines. Why should this matter to you? Most Americans — 87% — use the Internet for everything from accessing information to earning money to watching their favorite shows and movies.)

http://www.standardrepublic.com/2017/11/killing-medical-tax-break-will-hammer-u-s-middle-class-seniors/43549.htm
(FROM THE ARTICLE: U.S. Republican lawmakers want to cut taxes for corporations and wealthy people by $1.3 trillion – and they seem to want seniors to foot a good chunk of the bill. Their 2018 budget plan would chop $473 billion out of Medicare and $1.3 trillion from Medicaid. (reut.rs/2mq1UhL). But the House tax plan also calls for elimination of the itemized deduction for high medical expenses. The deduction allows taxpayers who itemize to deduct medical expenses exceeding 10 percent of adjusted gross income. This is helpful to anyone dealing with disabilities, acute or chronic conditions or long-term care and assisted living costs. But the medical expense deduction is especially useful for older people, for the simple reason that they are more likely to struggle with acute and chronic health problems. And it is used mainly by middle-class households. Nearly half (49 percent) of taxpayers who deducted medical expenses in 2015 had income below $50,000 according to analysis of IRS records by the AARP Public Policy Institute; 69 percent had income less than $75,000. The importance of the deduction is growing, because the number of underinsured Americans is rising. At the end of 2016, 28 percent of adults who had health insurance were underinsured, according to the Commonwealth Fund (bit.ly/2zKKMqe) – a percentage that translates to 41 million people. Commonwealth defines “underinsured” as people whose out-of-pocket health expenses are 10 percent or more of household income, and the number has more than doubled since 2003. In Medicare, total out-of-pocket spending by beneficiaries in 2013 averaged $6,150, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). Nearly half of that (47 percent) was for insurance premiums, followed by three categories of health care services – long-term care facilities (18 percent), prescription drugs (12 percent) and dental services (9 percent).)

For the Diersens, they were $30,890 — $13,859 medical and dental expenses, $14,303 real estate and state income taxes, and $2,728 charitable contributions. Last year, my 87-year-old aunt’s medical deductions were $74,050. One should expect that every year that you are older, the higher that your medical expenses will be. http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171109/OPINION/171109872
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some have said that this plan would eviscerate the state and local tax deduction. This is simply not true. For Americans who choose to itemize, mortgage interest, property tax deductions and charitable contribution deductions are still available to them. This bill maintains the property tax deduction (up to $10,000), the mortgage interest deduction (for a loan up to $500,000) and the charitable deduction.)

All during the almost 30 years that I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997, I saw absolutely no sexual harassment. In the federal government, women are a member of a protected class and they are given lots of preferential treatment. Unlike the federal government’s non-veteran White male employees, its female employees are not subject to its “up-or-out” policy. The federal government wastes the careers of and gets rid of its non-veteran White male employees who do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40.)

I itemized my deductions 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions since 1978. My critics/opponents have always wanted my wife and I to pay more federal income tax. They hint/imply/argue/shout a) that my wife and I were born with silver spoons in our mouths, b) that we have always been privileged, c) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, and d) that my federal pension and health/dental/vision insurance subsidies are too generous. — ‘Do we have the courage to be reasonable, to be kind?’ Proft describes politics as drying Illinois like a desert – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: What would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes say about you to Proft? Mine would say a) that I paid only $70,932 into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) but the CSRS has already paid me $1,025,596 in today’s dollars, b) that I avoided the draft, c) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, d) that I have been married since 1978, e) that my wife has always had a good job, f) that I have not given Proft any money, g) that some/many might not pay $50/year for his newspapers because they get GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free each and every morning and evening and without any advertising, h) etc.)
https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511260887-do-we-have-the-courage-to-be-reasonable-to-be-kind-proft-describes-politics-as-drying-illinois-like-a-desert
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Proft discussed how 85 percent of families in Illinois say the state is on the wrong track and how half of them readily admit they’d rather be somewhere else. “If you think we can have public-sector employees pay $140,000 into the pension system and get $2 million back; if you think we have a revenue problem and not a spending problem; and if you think 32 years of the last 34 of Mike Madigan’s speakership is not a sufficient probationary period, then this speech is for you,” he said. Proft said the inconsistencies in the world of Illinois politics are glaring. “Every politician in both parties says, ‘I’m going to Springfield to provide state services because that’s what a civilized society does,’ but how is it until recently we were 51st out of 50 states, behind the District of Columbia, in providing services to people with developmental, intellectual disabilities,” he said. Adding insult to injury, Proft said a sizable portion of the state’s more than $16 billion in unpaid debt is owed to social services providers. Proft argued that Madigan has been able to control everything as long as he has because Republicans haven’t always fought the way they need to. “The reason Madigan has enjoyed his run is not because he’s genius: It is because the Republican Party is feckless, weak and surrenders,” he said. State poltics has become so divisive that it is tearing apart families, Proft contended. “Millennials are leading the exodus from this state,” he said. “The problem is, for the biggest investment middle-income families make in their lives — their homes — it’s not possible to get a rate of return on. We talk about businesses leaving, people leaving; people are leaving to go to states that keep their promises to families that have a member with developmental disabilities.” To Proft, that’s a clear indication it’s time state leaders change their focus. “We should be having a conversation about keeping our promises,” he said. “Instead of only talking about being No. 1 in job creation, maybe we should focus on being No. 1 in providing services that are a mirror of our humanity. We have become an unkind state, a barbaric state.” Proft sees another jarring example of that in the way Ford Heights, one of the state’s poorest communities, now boasts some of the highest property taxes. “This state is becoming a home equity desert, and it’s forcing people to leave and breaking up families,” he said.)

— Ending Medical Tax Break Could Be a ‘Gut Punch’ to the Middle Class – Kate Zernike and Abby Goodnough (DIERSEN: How old are you? I am 69. Do you itemize your deductions? For the Diersens, they were $30,890 — $13,859 medical and dental expenses, $14,303 real estate and state income taxes, and $2,728 charitable contributions. Last year, my 87-year-old aunt’s medical deductions were $74,050. One should expect that every year that you are older, the higher that your medical expenses will be. http://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-7th-circuit/1385001.html) The lawsuit involved the FOA, DOT authority to grant exemptions from the FOA, and the sufficiency of material facts that would make a dealer suspicious of a car’s mileage. On September 16, 1996, I presented oral arguments to Chief Judge Posner and to Circuit Court Judges Coffey and Kanne. On March 31, 1997, the Appellate Court agreed with me and ruled that DOT lacked authority to grant exemptions to the FOA, and that therefore, its exemption for cars over 10 years old was invalid.)

— Restrict, don’t increase, access to marijuana – Bill Deckard, Winfield
http://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20171106/restrict-dont-increase-access-to-marijuana
(FROM THE LETTER: An Oct. 28 letter to the Daily Herald advocated greater access to marijuana for people suffering chronic pain, citing a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). But if you visit the JAMA website and enter the search word “marijuana,” you’ll also see dozens of articles showing that marijuana can kill more than just pain: it can negatively impact things like cognitive function, moral clarity and the general health and well-being of users and their children and grandchildren. Another recent letter in the Herald, this one in Carolyn Hax’s advice column, highlighted marijuana as a killer of ambition. Hax’s correspondent told about her 20-something boyfriend, a daily user of marijuana who, among other things, hadn’t driven his own car in two years simply because he had lost his car keys! A question, dear reader: when you were 20-somelthing — maybe you still are — would you have given up driving your car even for two days, let along two years, just because you couldn’t find your keys? I’m writing this letter on the day before Halloween and can’t help but wonder, as our nation rushes headlong toward allowing greater access to marijuana, are we in danger of producing endless generations of ambitionless, leisure-loving, mentally challenged zombies? Let’s urge our legislators to pass laws restricting — not increasing — access to this dangerous drug.)

— REP. ROSKAM: “WE’RE DIRECTLY ATTACKING THE STATUS QUO” WITH INCOME TAX PROPOSAL (DIERSEN: The proposed tax plan attacks those who itemize their deductions. Government should encourage education and homeownership. I have itemized my deductions since 1972 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions ever since we got married in 1978. Since 2004, GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails have gone out each and every morning, and since 2015, each and every evening too. Since 2004, GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails have included links to almost 286,200 articles and information on many upcoming events. Consequently, ever-increasingly, Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plant, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs a) work to stop me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out and b) work to stop everyone from reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/05/nyregion/news-sites-with-local-ambitions-hope-to-fill-digital-void.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The abrupt shutdown on Thursday of two of the biggest digital local news sites in the city, DNAinfo and Gothamist, left a void in the news landscape. And making money off local news has proved especially challenging for publishers with ambitions to sizable reach and profits, though Patch, a nationwide chain that has nine reporters based in the city and recently expanded into Queens and Manhattan, has become profitable. But several handfuls of homegrown websites and old-fashioned print newspapers that cover the city’s teeming neighborhoods survive and, to some extent, thrive. They are not backed by personal fortunes like that of DNAinfo’s billionaire owner, Joe Ricketts, the founder of TD Ameritrade. But unlike Mr. Ricketts, who closed his unprofitable sites a week after the staff voted to unionize, they have found ways to stay in business telling the stories considered too small for the major newspapers to bother with. Some of them exist only online, some, including stalwarts that have been around for decades such as The Villager and the Our Town chain, began as print papers and continue to publish print editions. And even as they mourn the demise of DNAinfo and Gothamist, they sense an opportunity. “After it happened I had all these people telling me this is your chance to fill that gap even more,” Mr. García Conde said. Some are one-person operations, Mr. García Conde’s included. . .The sites break real news and hold the authorities accountable. . .But plaudits don’t pay the bills. For that, sites depend on advertising revenue. Mr. Torkells charges $1,000 a month for a banner ad above the TriBeCa Citizen logo, a position that currently rotates among a real-estate firm, a condo complex and a wine bar. Ms. Zagare of Bklyner is turning to sponsored articles, like one that ran on Halloween offering “Tips on Surviving Tonight’s Candy Onslaught,” with advice from Crunch Gym. . .“Good local journalism requires paying a living wage to great community journalists,” the ad read. In less than 12 hours, Ms. Zagare said Saturday, the site raised more than $1,200. Mr. García Conde said that he would love to hire another reporter, too. The Bronx, after all, is a big place. “Someone has to tell these stories,” he said.)
— I.R.S. Commissioner John A. Koskinen, Demonized by Conservatives, Leaves on His Terms – Alan Rappeport  (DIERSEN: Did you leave your employer(s) on your terms? I did not. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Firestone Store superior immediately fired me when I gave him my 2-week notice in 1971. I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile. But then, Oldsmobile withdrew its job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. I would not have suffered any of the aforesaid adverse actions if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran. Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes disagree.)

— College-Savings Imbalance: Parents Put Aside More for Sons Than Daughters Two studies find a gender divide. Is it bias? Or do parents have more confidence in their daughters’ abilities? – Cheryl Winokur Munk (DIERSEN: Were you “college material?” While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. — TROUBLE IN GOP GOV PRIMARY LAND It seems the Jeanne Ives-Rich Morthland team has to hit reset on its petitions after an address snafu on the original set. Ives just announced she plans to challenge Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary. I am aware of the challenges it takes to gather the signatures and I am truly grateful for all of the hard work and dedication that has already been placed in the Jeanne Ives for Governor campaign.” It was signed Patrick Harlan.

While I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997, many of my superiors and supervisors were smokers. — Fast-growing millionaires club – Mike Causey
https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2017/10/fast-growing-millionaires-club/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Between early 2016 and mid-2017 (January to August), the number of mostly self-made government worker millionaires jumped from 3,272 to 16,475. Given the rising stock market, more people are moving into the seven-figure retirement club every month. In August, there were 46,088 people with account balances between $750,000 and $999,000. That was up from only 18,846 in January 2016. So how did they do it? The early TSP millionaires were all political appointees. Either elected (members of the House or Senate) or appointed to top jobs. Many were successful lawyers who were named federal judges. They brought their outside accounts with them and into the TSP, which is probably the least expensive and most closely monitored investment option on earth. According to some sources, one-time government employee Albert Einstein once said that compounding is the eighth wonder of the world. Or words to that effect. Or not. But even if he didn’t, and if he were alive today, he probably would have kind things to say about what happens when people invest over a long period of time, keep calm in good times and bad, and stay the course. In the case of federal investors, it helps immensely to take advantage of the 5 percent match Uncle Sam offers employees. As TSP investor Emily in Washington points out, for a TSP investor making $100,000 per year, that government match translates into a tax-deferred pay raise. And as salary goes up, so does the value of the match. Every now and then, we hear from a self-made TSP millionaire. While they come from all agencies, jobs and income levels, they all have a couple of things in common: They’ve been investing for a long time, an average of 28 years. They have all or most of their money in the C and S funds. When the market tanks (as it did in 1997 and 2008), they continue to buy the stock funds, getting more shares because they consider them on sale. More bang for the buck.)

October 30 Morning Edition

HERALD EXTRA
— OCTOBER 3, 2017 FLASHBACK: Your local newspaper: The real deal – JIM ZACHARY (DIERSEN: What do you say to activists, to candidates, to campaign managers, to elected officials, to party leaders, to major donors, and to political consultants in Illinois who state that they are conservative and/or Republican, but who fail/refuse to keep
diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists? I have served as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. Since 2004, I have sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails each and every morning, and since 2015, each and every evening too. Those emails have included links to almost 285,600 articles and information on many upcoming Republican events. What do you say to those who “punish” me by not sending me their press advisories and press releases a) because I refuse to serve as one or their operatives or dupes, b) because I refuse to carry out their backlist orders, c) because I have included links in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to articles that they do not like, d) because I have failed/refused to give them money, e) because they blame me for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems, f) because I am “too conservative,” g) because they want to curry favor with my competitors, Rich Miller, and/or the rest of the Democrat news media in Illinois, and/or h) because they focus on destroying individuals like me, organizations like TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, companies, and governments that they cannot manipulate/dominate? They do not want me a) to know about or promote their public events and other public activities, b) to attend their events, and c) to report on their public events and other activities. They do not want anyone to first learn of anything by reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. They want you to only know what they want you to know. They paint me as being illegitimate if not worse things a) because I sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free of charge, b) because the emails do not contain any advertising, c) because no one pays me for what I do as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, d) because I do not have a college degree in journalism, and/or e) because I state that I am conservative and Republican. They proudly paint themselves as being anti-Diersen. They do not return my phone calls. They read my emails for “opposition research.” Should I publish a list of the aforesaid punishers? Some of them, if not many of them, talk and act like they want me to do that.)
http://www.heraldextra.com/news/opinion/national-editorials/commentary-your-local-newspaper-the-real-deal/article_d1295fef-ca14-5903-bc68-f82c03845a6a.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a world of fake news spread on social media and attacks on the media from people in power, it is important for the public to know the difference between legitimate reporting by credible sources and all the noise posing as “the media.” Here are some reasons your local newspaper is the most trustworthy source for news and information: — Newspaper newsrooms are staffed with real people — people you know — reporters, photographers, editors — gathering the news, conducting interviews, covering meetings, attending events, writing, editing, fact-checking and making sure every day you can trust what you read. — Newspapers rely on recognizable sources. Quotes in the articles you read are attributed to real people and can be easily verified. — Newspapers work hard to stay away from single source reporting, giving readers context and balance. — Newspaper websites have legitimate URLs ending in .com or .org extensions, listing contact information, the names of staff members and the media organization’s leadership team on the website. — Newspapers correct mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes at times, but there is a big difference between an error and intentionally and knowingly publishing a false report because of some political or social agenda. Spurious websites, blogs and social media do not correct errors. They thrive on them. In the United States newspapers have a long and important legacy of holding the powerful accountable, defending the First Amendment and advocating for government transparency. Democracy is protected when the newspaper provides checks and balances as the Fourth Estate of government from city hall to the courthouse to the statehouse to the White House. Newspapers are committed to the neighborhoods, cities, counties, states and coverage areas they serve. Straightforward news reporting and thought-provoking commentary give a voice to the voiceless and empower the powerless. Newspapers hold government accountable because at our very core we believe that government belongs to the governed and not to the governing. Don’t be embarrassed because you shared some sensational, agenda-driven report on social media only to find out it is totally fake. Get your news where real news has always been found: Your local newspaper, the real deal.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: On n Nov. 8, it’s anticipated that thousands of Americans in at least nine cities will take to the streets to “scream helplessly at the sky.” You can probably guess the reason: It’s to mark the one-year anniversary of the election of Donald Trump as president. Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the election? Time flies when everyone seems to be losing their minds! Here’s the good news: If you’re reading this, you’re still alive. The stock market seems downright giddy — knock on wood, at least for now — and despite our president’s occasionally baffling and sometimes alarming tweets, our country is apparently still free enough for people to get on Facebook and organize cross-country protests that involve shouting at clouds.)
— Make it worth their time Young professionals need to follow 3 rules to impress executives – Mary Rezek (DIERSEN: Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40. The two other Republican candidates, State Senator Patrick O’Malley and Lt. Gov. The attorney general maintains that it would have been irresponsible for him to get involved in a federal investigation. On Side A will be those who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. On Side B will be those who are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. I would call Side A “The Anti-Americans” and side B “The Americans.” I will be on Side B. On what side will you be on?)

— 88 percent of benefits from state/local tax deductions go to upper-income Americans – Scott Rasmussen (DIERSEN: Those who can and do itemize pay less federal income taxes. Sadly, Shimkus says that 79 percent of the people in his district do not itemize their deductions. Because I itemized, I paid less federal income taxes 1972-1977, and because my wife and I have always itemized, we have paid less federal income taxes since 1978. We have been able to itemize, that is, to pay less federal tax because of the money we paid for education, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, state income taxes, medical expenses, and charitable contributions. Those who do not itemize in Shimkus’s district must not pay that much money for education, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, state income taxes, medical expenses, and/or charitable contributions.)

They crow that in 1989, when I was 40 years old, a) they threw me off audits of IRS, b) they assigned me to an extremely undesirable audit, c) they gave me extremely unrealistic performance expectations, d) they gave me an extremely unfair performance appraisal, and e) they ranked me at the bottom of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. The aforesaid punishment was not only because my wife and I gave up trying to have children, because we did not adopt, and because we did not become foster parents, but also because in 1988, when I turned 40 years old, I became an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.)

CBS MINNESOTA
— How Have Our Retirement Goals Changed? – Heather Brown (DIERSEN: I should write a book about early retirement.)
http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2017/10/24/good-question-retirement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a new Money Magazine article, financial guru Suze Orman says we should retire at 70 – not a month or year before. She writes that for healthy people in their 60s, retirements can last 30 years. So, how far do we have to go to meet her goals? When are we retiring now? Good Question. According to the U.S. Census, the average American retires at age 63. That’s up from age 62 in 1997. So what’s changed? “Our culture has changed, our concept of independence has changed and the cost of living has changed,” Ernie Owens, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Business said. Owens says back in the 1970s and early 80s, many families relied on one income and a pension. The concept of the 401(k) then took over which meant more people had to rely on putting away the savings themselves. At the same time, health care costs have increased, people are living longer, healthier lives and some are choosing to stay on in the workforce. “The attitude toward work has changed,” Owens says. “A lot of people want to work because it’s something to do, it gives them worth.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 32 percent of Americans age 65-69 were employed at least part time. And for Americans between age 70-74, workforce participation was 19 percent. But, just because people want to work doesn’t mean they can. According to the Aegon Retirement Readiness Survey 2017, 61 percent of Americans say they retired sooner than planned. They cites bad health, unemployment and family responsibilities as the top three reasons.)

— Apprenticeships are coming to white-collar office work – Jena McGregor (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious when I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980. They wanted me to suffer much more than the $18,847 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars that I suffered. They viciously demonized, viciously denigrated, and viciously denigrated the experience that I had gained by a) working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173, b) passing the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, c) earning an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and d) almost completing the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)
