http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-samuelson-millennials-jobs-adulthood-perspec-0427-jm-20170426-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Growing up isn’t what it used to be. There’s a yawning gap between the end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood: a period when millions of 20-somethings and 30-somethings have many adult freedoms without all the responsibilities. Social scientists have tried — so far in vain — to name this new life-stage, but no one should question its significance. If you have doubts, a new U.S. Census Bureau study should resolve them. It compares the experiences of Americans 18 to 34 now with the same age group in the 1970s. There has been a sea change. “In prior generations, young adults were expected to have finished school, found a job, and set up their own household during their 20s — most often with their spouse and with a child soon to follow,” says the report. No more. . .The transition has been hard on some men. In 1975, only about a quarter of men 25 to 34 had incomes less than $30,000 a year. By 2016, that had risen to 41 percent. (Incomes were adjusted for inflation.) Meanwhile, millions of young women have entered the labor force, and though their median wage remains below men’s, it has increased faster than men’s.)

April 21 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Please join me in encouraging the 18 members of the DuPage County Board to pass a resolution ASAP in opposition to legalizing pot for recreational use in Illinois, SB 316 and HB 2353, and especially the 12 members of its Judicial & Public Safety Committee: Grant Eckhoff, Chair, Robert L. Larsen, Vice Chair, John Curran, Peter DiCianni, Amy L. Grant, Gary Grasso, James D. Healy, Tonia Khouri, Sean T. Noonan, Donald E. Puchalski, Sam Tornatore, and James F. Zay.  The next meeting of that committee is at 8:15 AM, Tuesday, May 2, 2017. I have asked that recommending passing a resolution in opposition to SB 316 and HB 2353 be put on the agenda for that meeting, that DuPage County States Attorney Robert Berlin speak at that meeting in favor of the resolution, and that the committee would vote at that meeting to recommend that the full board pass the resolution. Berlin has filed a witness slip with the State of Illinois in opposition to SB 316 and HB 2353 along with Anita Bedell, Peter Bensinger, Judy Kramer, Ralph Rivera, Kathleen Valente, Thomas Weitzel, myself, and others. – Dave Diersen

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-visa-worker-program-trump-edit-0421-md-20170420-story.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: These visas are intended for use by employers when they can’t find a qualified U.S. worker to hire. Ideally, the American education system would churn out enough qualified graduates in the science/technology/engineering/math realm to fill every possible job slot. Why that’s not the case is a conversation for another day. But even if it were so, there’s reason to give employers opportunities to hire a certain number of exceptional foreigners who bring unique abilities to the table.)

The punch sparked a 17-second melee that rolled through the crowd watching the game between rivals Eisenhower and MacArthur high schools. After untangling the mess, Decatur school board members, riding the popularity of zero tolerance, expelled Carson and five other instigators — all African-American teenagers — for two years. GOPUSA
— Hypocrisy in the Anti-O’Reilly Army – Brent Bozell and Tim Graham
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=23333
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Fox News took Bill O’Reilly off the air after a heavy campaign to fire him led by CNN’s media unit and The New York Times. If all the charges of sexual harassment are true, his case is indefensible. That said, it’s time for his media critics to stand down. They are guilty of rank hypocrisy. These same media outlets despised the idea that Donald Trump would drag Bill Clinton’s sexual harassment lawsuits into the presidential campaign. On Jan. 8, 2016, the Times editorial staff sneered: “It is also a tired subject that few Americans want to hear more about. If Mr. Trump has not read enough, he can curl up with a copy of the Starr report.”  Bizarrely, the editorial noted that Hillary Clinton had told a New Hampshire town hall questioner a month earlier that Juanita Broaddrick’s tale of rape was not to be believed. Yet it was Trump who was denounced as sexist and beyond the pale. The Times said: “His aim is to dredge up an ancient scandal and tar Mrs. Clinton with it in a clearly sexist fashion. There should be no place for that kind of politics in this country.” That is, unless it’s the top draw at Fox News, in which case it’s suddenly America’s greatest concern. On April 2, 2017, the Times published a 3,148-word front-page article lamenting “O’Reilly Thrives as Settlements Add Up.” Reporters Emily Steel and Michael Schmidt declared that their investigation found five women who received payouts from either O’Reilly or Fox “in exchange for agreeing to not pursue litigation or speak about their accusations against him. The agreements totaled about $13 million.” As they noted, the lion’s share of that total came in a $9 million settlement from 2004. That was 13 years ago, but it didn’t qualify as a “tired subject” or some “ancient scandal.” CNN relentlessly pushed for O’Reilly’s dismissal, calling up advertisers and pressuring them to take commercials off their competition. Bashing O’Reilly dominated their Sunday show “Reliable Sources” for weeks and their “news” programming after their victory. But two days after the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke in 1998, CNN aired a town hall meeting titled “Investigating the President: Media Madness?” Host Jeff Greenfield insisted that millions of Americans were “asking the press one question fraught with significance: What the hell are you people doing trying to find out what kind of sex the President of the United States might or might not be having?” Back then, it was “media madness” to investigate whether then-President Bill Clinton might be assaulting women in the workplace — the Oval Office. There was zero concern about a “culture of abuse” inside the White House. For good measure, CNN moved on to specials attacking special prosecutor Ken Starr for prudishly investigating where CNN and the rest of the press never wanted to go. It’s not only CNN and the Times that are displaying a different moral standard. Does no one find it just a wee bit ironic that disgraced Brian Williams is still doing a weeknight show on MSNBC, where he can lecture that O’Reilly was dispatched by “the power of the female consumer”? Women deserve a workplace where men don’t harass them for sex. But that’s what these sanctimonious liberal journalists care about. It just doesn’t matter how brutal the alleged rape of Juanita Broaddrick was. What matters is that Bill O’Reilly had to go. Bill Clinton is laughing.)

CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN NEWS
— LOIS LERNER SHOULD BE IN JAIL – Kent Kellar  (DIERSEN: One could argue that my Democrat superiors in the federal government should be in jail, but they would say that they only carried out orders from Democrat politicians. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims.  My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.)
http://conservativerepublicannews.com/2017/04/20/lois-lerner-should-be-in-jail/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: From Feb. 2010 until May 2012 the IRS showed Americans exactly what the weaponization of executive agencies looks like when the Obama administration directly targeted the tea party and other conservative 501(c)(4) groups for political reasons. Now over three years later, justice still has not been served. Luckily, Congressman Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) and Kevin Brady (R-Texas) are seeking closure for the American people to eliminate the corruption Obama left in our country. In a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions this month, Roskam and Brady explain, “On April 9, 2014, the House Committee on Ways and Means voted to send a letter to the Department of Justice referring former IRS Exempt Organizations Division Director Lois G. Lerner for criminal prosecution… Despite this fact, and for what many believe were purely partisan reasons, the prior administration refused to review Ms. Lerner’s misconduct.” The congressmen are calling for an investigation once again to finally hold the IRS accountable for their actions.)

I just barely made it into the upper 20% of my high school class.  My ACT was only 24. Neither of my parents had attended college.  My father had fought type 1 diabetes from age 14 and made only about $40,000/year in today’s dollars.  My mother never attended high school and was a housewife/homemaker.  My vision was never correctable to 20/20 and I have always had partial red/green color blindness.  I had demonstrated no leadership potential in high school; I washed dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights during my junior and senior years and the summer in between. Upon graduation from high school, I cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, pumped gasoline, and delivered mail.)

Kresges in Chicago Heights 1964-1966 was so bad that women and minorities would not take/keep the job.  My understanding is that I was the first and only White male to hold that job and that I held it longer (18 months) than anyone else. The bad ‘men’s work’ jobs that held after were cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, delivering mail, working on an automobile assembly line, working as a security guard, selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances, collecting delinquent taxes, and auditing federal agencies.)

Democrats use Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, a) your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 ($94,610) by age 25, GS-14 ($111,801) by age 30, GS-15 ($131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service ($161,900) by age 40 and b) you will be expected to help your superiors and supervisors get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates shouted that I could never have a successful GAO career, that is, that GAO could and should waste my career and get rid of me.  They stressed a) that I was a Republican, b) that I was 31 years old, c) that I was White, d) that I was a male, e) that I was not a veteran, and f) that GAO forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars, that is, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5, currently $90,173, to GS-9, Step 10, currently $71,326, to transfer from IRS to GAO.)

The Democrats at GAO would not have done the aforesaid if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, younger, and/or a veteran.)

http://www.wkow.com/story/35158969/professor-sues-wal-mart-over-clean-toilets-description
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Montana State University professor is suing Wal-Mart for libel after he says an employee at the Bozeman store listed his occupation on a fishing license as a “toilet cleaner.” Gilbert Kalonde, assistant professor of technology education at MSU, filed the suit this past week in Gallatin County District Court. Kalonde is seeking unspecified damages. Wal-Mart spokesman Ragan Dickens told The Associated Press: “To our knowledge an administrative process to resolve this with Dr. Kalonde is ongoing. We’ve not been served with the lawsuit, but we take the claims seriously and will respond appropriately with the court.” According to the complaint, Kalonde bought a state fishing license in April 2015, showing the Wal-Mart employee identification of his employment at MSU. But the Wal-Mart employee entered “clean toilets” into the state database as Kalonde’s occupation. The suit contends Wal-Mart exposed Kalonde to “hatred, contempt, ridicule” through the incident.)

— VERY SAD: Protesters Gather in Chicago, Calling on Trump to Release Tax Returns  (DIERSEN: In 1977, in connection with Money Magazine doing a “One Person’s Finances” article on me, I gave Money Magazine copies of my 1972-1976 federal income tax returns. When Money Magazine published its 4-page article on me in its February, 1978 issue, it because clear that the Democrats at Money Magazine selected me for the article because they wanted to and because they did a) foist negative government employee stereotypes on me and b) paint my education deductions as being improper.  They described my job duties as an IRS Revenue Officer and the graduate business courses at Loyola and the graduate accounting courses at DePaul that I had deducted purposely to make it look like the courses did not relate to my job duties and they did not help me carry out my job duties. They implied that the courses qualified me for “a new trade or business” and that I took the courses to get a job in the private sector.  The Democrats at IRS disallowed all the courses notwithstanding the fact that IRS encourages its Revenue Offices to take graduate business and accounting courses and my Loyola and DePaul graduate school applications clearly showed that I wanted to take the courses to help me carry out my job duties at IRS.  I took IRS to Tax Court pro se and won a split decision.  The Democrats at Money Magazine and the Democrats at IRS would not have done the aforesaid to me if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran.)

— Naperville taxpayers deserve an explanation for nature center flooding – Editorial  (DIERSEN: What factors increase the likelihood of your basement flooding? Factors for 915 Cove Court in Wheaton include the subdivision being built in a watershed area and a former septic field, the tremendous amount of surface and subsurface storm water that flows onto the lot during and after heavy rains, the inadequate number of storm sewer inlets in the subdivision, the disruption, obstruction, and improper connection of 6″ and 4″ subterranean drainage lines when the home was built, the pouring the foundation walls on cracked footings, the improper installation and intentional blockage of exterior foundation footing tiles, the installation of only one sump pump when there should have been two or even three or even four, the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, and the fact that all the storm water that gets into the storm sewer system on the lot is limited to the capacity of just one 4″ pipe.  What factors decrease the likelihood of your basement flooding?  For 915 Cove Court, they include the installation of steel reinforcement rods in foundation walls, the installation of interior footing tiles, my paying $900 when the home was built in 1984 to have all nine of the home’s downspouts directly connected to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my installing a backup sump pump, my unobstructed and properly connecting the aforesaid subterranean drainage lines to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my paying for unobstruction (the removal of stones) from some of the exterior footing tiles, my adding hundreds of feet of French drains and many storm sewer inlets on the lot and connecting them directly to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my properly sealing the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, my paying for conversion to an overhead sewer system before the basement was finished in 2005, and my paying for a 20-W whole house natural gas backup electric generator for the home.  Since 1984, because of Wheaton’s failure/refusal to assure that building codes were enforced when the subdivision was constructed and 915 Cove Court was built, I have been forced to spend many thousands of dollars and many hundreds of hours of my labor to stop basement flooding.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Parade of Democrats lines up to challenge Peter Roskam – GREG HINZ  (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout at Roskam a) that I have caused all of his problems, that I am causing all his problems, and that I will forever cause all his problems as long as I keep sending out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails and b) that Roskam has gotten far more votes because I am no longer the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, or an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member.  Who does Roskam want the next Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee member for the 6th Congressional District to be?)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170412/BLOGS02/170419958
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Among those confirming that they either intend to run or are seriously considering doing so in Roskam’s west suburban 6th District are Amanda Howland, a lawyer and psychologist who got 42 percent of the vote against him in 2016; Barrington Hills Planning Commission member Kelly Mazeski, a former state senate hopeful and ex-financial consultant; and Carole Cheney, who now works as district chief of staff for neighboring Congressman Bill Foster, D-Geneva. Howland says she’s definitely in the contest and points to the name recognition she built up in her prior race. Mazesk is “exploring” running but is interested enough that she’s met both with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (the party’s House elections unit) and Emily’s List, a prominent women’s funding group. Cheney says she “likely” to get in the race because, “The people in the 6th Congressional District are entitled to a representative who respects and listens to them regardless of political party.” The field of possible candidates is bigger than that, though, with several other names being rumored. The biggest—one that some insiders say has DCCC’s blessing—is Maura Sullivan. I wasn’t able to reach her, but Sullivan comes right out of central casting: a former U.S. Marine and Iraq war veteran who graduated from Northwestern University, got an MBA from Harvard University, and until recently was a senior public affairs official at the Pentagon. But Sullivan also reportedly lives in Evanston, something that likely would become an issue if she moved to run. DCCC isn’t tipping its hand, other than saying that the 6th is on its short list of national targets for next year. Says a spokeswoman, “There’s no question that Rep. Peter Roskam is out of step with Illinois voters. We fully expect to have a strong recruit in the sixth district and it’s why we’ve made an unprecedented investment in the region by investing in a full-time, local organizer to harness the grassroots energy we’re seeing on the ground.” To emphasize the point, the DuPage County Democratic Organization says it’s expecting quite a turnout for its annual dinner on April, with at least three Democratic candidates for governor expected to attend: Chris Kennedy, Ameya Pawar and J.B. Pritzker. Robert Peickert, chair of the DuPage County Democratic Organization, says he hopes to build on momentum from the fall, when the party increased from 1 to 18 the number of township slots it holds in the county. However, the other 54 township positions are held by Republicans, and Roskam says he’s not sweating. “DCCC is not unknown to me. I saw them in ’06 and ’08,” he told me in a phone call. While Hillary Clinton may have out-polled Trump in the district in November, “I did better than John McCain (when he was the GOP presidential nominee) and outdid Obama in Obama’s big year (2008,) says Roskam. “I know the district and the playbook.” It looks like 2018 could be interesting.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Dr. David Dao taken off United jet recovering in Chicago; has troubled past – AP  (DIERSEN: If you became the center of national attention like Dr. Dao, what would your critics/opponents stress about your past?  My critics/opponents would stress that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; that my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.  They would also stress that I am no longer the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, or an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member.  They would stress that the mayor of the city that I have lived in since 1978 publicly insults me.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/report-troubled-past-of-kentucky-doctor-dragged-off-united-plane/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Elizabethtown, Kentucky, physician became a focus of attention not only because videos of the incident had been broadcast around the world, but also because he was convicted more than a decade ago of felony charges involving his prescribing of drugs and spent years trying to regain his medical license. In between, Dao made money playing poker, logging $234,664 in winnings, TMZ reported. . .According to records from the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, Dao went to medical school at the University of Medicine of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, graduating in 1974. He was licensed in Kentucky with a specialty in pulmonary disease. His legal troubles started in 2003, when his medical license was suspended after an undercover sting operation at a Louisville motel for allegedly writing fraudulent prescriptions. According to the documents, the licensing board had learned that Dao had become sexually interested in a patient and hired the patient as his office manager. That man later said he quit his job because Dao “pursued him aggressively” and arranged to provide him with prescription drugs in exchange for sex. Dao was ultimately convicted in late 2004 of several counts of obtaining drugs by fraud or deceit and was placed on five years of supervised probation and surrendered his medical license. His longtime effort to get his license back finally succeeded in 2015, when the licensing board allowed him to practice medicine again.)

SPRINGFIELD STARTE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Will ‘Real GOP of Illinois’ stand up? Unlikely – Bernard Schoenburg  (DIERSEN: According to this article, the anonymous website calls itself a “free speech zone” and says “Republicans are afraid to criticize (Rauner) because of the money he can spend attacking people.”  My critics/opponents, their operatives, their dupes read all my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails very closely.  They look for anything in the emails that they can use against me.  It is called opposition research.  They immediately bring to the attention of the following people anything in the emails that is critical of them: Congressmen Bost, Davis, Hultgren, Kinzinger, LaHood, Roskam, Shimkus; Governor Rauner; Lt. Governor Sanguinetti; Radogno, Connelly, Nybo, and the rest of the Republican State Senators; Durkin, Ives, Breen, and the rest of the Republican State Representatives; DuPage County elected officials including Berlin, Kachiroubas, Grogan, Cronin, Zaruba, Hinds, Jorgensen, Bucholz, Henry, Ruscitti, Cantore, Larsen, Zay, Wiley, Eckhoff, Grant, Elliott, Murphy, and Whelan; Township elected officials including Heidorn, Hinkle, LeVan, Muehlfelt, Falbo, Nathwani, Molitor, and Keller; Wheaton elected officials including Gresk, Suess, Fitch, Scalzo, Rutledge, and Saline; Illinois Republican Party leaders including Schneider, DeMonte, Porter, Colgan, Dorgan, Higgins, Claar, and Bond; DuPage County Republican Party leaders including Krajewski, Hinds, Kachiroubas, Murphy, Keller, Minor, Marchese, Schultz, Czernek, Fisher, Cuzzone, Durante, Grogan; and Milton Township Republican leaders Keller, LeVan, Austin, and Nathwani.  My critic/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that if I was a “good Republican,” I would not include in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails links to any articles that are critical of the aforesaid people; that if I was a “good Republican,” I would only include links in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails that glorify and praise the aforesaid people.)
http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20170408/bernard-schoenburg-will-real-gop-of-illinois-stand-up-unlikely
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A mystery website, realgopillinois.com, is billing itself as “the official news site for real Republicans.” But welcome to campaign season, where things are not always as they seem. The site is professional-looking, with items presented as news stories and a solicitation for tips. AARON DeGROOT, a spokesman for the state GOP, said the site has no connection to the party and he has “no idea who these folks are.” Its creators aren’t making it easy to find out, either. A computer expert at my newspaper tells me there’s no easy way to track the origin of the site because its domain was registered anonymously. An address listed at the bottom of the group’s email is in Champaign, but turned out to be a UPS store. An employee there said they do rent mailboxes. The group name doesn’t turn up in the Illinois State Board of Elections, but it appears to have started a Facebook page recently. I emailed to find out more. The response came with no name attached. “We are just a group of everyday citizens who are upset with the Democrat Party and how they’ve ruined this state,” the response stated. “We are also upset with the Illinois GOP and Gov. (BRUCE) RAUNER. We all voted for Bruce Rauner in 2014 even though some of us were very unsure about him because of his history. Two years in, we’re disappointed in Gov. Rauner and the Illinois GOP. … With the debt mounting, taxpayers will probably be on the hook for even more and the politicians won’t care. … Gov. Rauner spends millions making sure his own people win GOP primaries and destroying other Republican candidates just because he can. Isn’t that what (House Speaker MICHAEL) MADIGAN does?”  The response also called the website a “free speech zone” and said “Republicans are afraid to criticize (Rauner) because of the money he can spend attacking people. Illinois won’t survive Mike Madigan or Bruce Rauner if we don’t stand up and speak out (about) what both political parties and their henchmen are doing now.” The site doesn’t just go after Rauner — it also has taken a swipe at CORY JOBE, the state tourism director, for contributing $1,000 to new Springfield City Council member KRISTIN DiCENSO, a Democrat, and even at the late JUDY BAAR TOPINKA, “who routinely headlined gay marriage rallies with the low-life likes of Democrats Sen. DICK DURBIN, Attorney General LISA MADIGAN, and former Gov. PAT QUINN.” STEVE BROWN, spokesman for Mike Madigan, who is also chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois, said Friday he had never heard of the site. “You’re the first to mention it,” he said.)

On September 16, 1996, I presented oral arguments to Chief Judge Posner and to Circuit Court Judges Coffey and Kanne.  On March 31, 1997, the Appellate Court agreed with me and ruled that DOT’s exemption for cars over 10 years old was invalid.)

NORTHWEST HERALD
— Rauner: Stopping state-worker paychecks would hurt families – AP  (DIERSEN: If state-worker paychecks have to delayed, reduced, and/or stopped, will someone suggest using a “needs based” approach to determine when paychecks are sent, how much those paychecks should be reduced, and/or if those paychecks should be stopped altogether?  In 1997, my GAO superiors determined that my wife and I could easily afford a reduction in today’s dollars of $72,135 (59%) a year of my income, that is, instead of my $122,991 salary, I would get a $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System pension.  They knew my wife’s salary, they knew that we had no debts, they knew that we had no dependents, they knew the value of our 13-year-old home in Wheaton, they knew that we owned a 1990 Ford Thunderbird LX, a 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX, and a 1997 Chevy Cavalier. They knew that we owned a 1962 Chevy Impala SS collector car, a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T collector car, and a 1972 Corvette collector car.  They knew how much we had in regular savings and how much we had saved for our retirement.  When you work for the federal government, your superiors know everything about you.)

DAILY MESSENGER
— Experience America at the time of the Great War – George Will  (DIERSEN: My grandfather on my father’s side fought the Germans in WWI. I am 100% German national origin. All my ancestors immigrated to northeast Illinois during the 1840s and the 1850s.)
http://www.mpnnow.com/opinion/20170408/george-will-experience-america-at-time-of-great-war
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Woodrow Wilson imposed and incited extraordinary repressions: “There are citizens of the United States … born under other flags … who have poured the poison of disloyalty into the very arteries of our national life. … Such creatures of passion, disloyalty and anarchy must be crushed out. … They are infinitely malignant, and the hand of our power should close over them.” His Committee on Public Information churned out domestic propaganda instructing the public how to detect pro-German sympathies. A 22-year-old Justice Department official named J. Edgar Hoover administered a program that photographed, fingerprinted and interrogated 500,000 suspects. Local newspapers published the names of people who were not buying war bonds or otherwise supporting the war. People were fired or ostracized for insufficient enthusiasm. The Espionage Act of 1917 made it a crime to “collect, record, publish or communicate” information useful to the enemy. In Illinois, Robert Prager, a German-American coal miner suspected of spying, was stripped, marched through the streets and hanged. The Washington Post deplored such “excesses” but applauded the “healthful and wholesome awakening in the interior part of the country.” Josef Hofer and his two brothers were South Dakota Hutterites whose faith forbade any involvement in war, including wearing a military uniform. They were arrested in March 1918, and a week after the armistice they were sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Arriving at the military prison around midnight, they stood naked for hours in a 17-degree November night. Then they were suspended naked from the bars of their cells, their feet barely touching the ground, refusing to wear the uniforms left in their cells. Fed only bread and water, after two weeks David Hofer was allowed to telegraph Josef’s wife, telling her that her husband was dying. He died the morning after she arrived. Prison guards mocked his corpse by dressing it in a uniform. The U.S. military was the world’s 17th largest in April 1917, smaller (less than 250,000) than Romania’s, and smaller than Britain’s casualties in one battle. America’s military became a melting pot for a nation in which one-third of the population had been born abroad or whose parents had been. Forty-three languages were spoken in one Army division raised in New York. One group was ineligible for melting: Printed at the bottom of draft registration cards were these words: “If person is of African descent, tear off this corner.”)
