(FROM THE ARTICLE: But in the changing climate, some Sangamon County taxpayers want the board members to know how they feel about their Second Amendment rights. “That’s what this resolution is,” resident Rosanna Pulido said. “It’s a pushback in a sense it may not have teeth as some people say but it’s drawing a line in the sand and that’s what needs to happen.” The Sangamon County administrator says they received many requests to take symbolic action on the number of issues. “Our policy really is to avoid that and say no unless it is something that directly impacts county government,” McFadden said. Some residents say they will be attending the county board meeting on June 12 at 7 PM to express themselves. “Be at the county board meeting, sign up to speak, and let your voice be heard,” Pulido said.)

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/white-house/trumps-war-on-the-washington-bureaucracy
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bill Valdez fired two people during his 20 years as a manager in the federal workforce. One went quietly after an instance of undisputed misconduct. The other, accused of doing almost no work, refused to leave and used entrenched civil service protections to stay on the federal payroll for another eight years, claiming discrimination, disability, and unfair treatment. Such long goodbyes have proved so arduous and frustrating that many managers just give up, essentially resigning their ability to manage their staff. But they are about to become much less common, as President Trump signed three executive orders last month gutting rules that allow bad workers to prevent legitimate firings, and ending lucrative perks for the labor unions that helped put them in place. . .Once the new employee discipline procedures are implemented, “you give someone notice that their performance is unsatisfactory, and if they do not respond, you can remove them within 30 days,” he added. In the case of the employee who survived Valdez’s attempt at firing for eight years, he recalled, “it got conflated with other issues that delayed the dismissal.” “A federal employee who is removed from public service for performance issues has a right to appeal not only the performance issues but the other issues he or she believes are associated with that … even to federal courts,” he said. “What this [new] process does is say if you’re removed from federal service for poor performance, and if you wish to adjudicate this, go ahead, but you’re not going to do this while you’re put on administrative leave.” “What tends to happen is most appeals are ruled in the agency’s favor,” Valdez added, particularly from the Merit Systems Protection Board. . .The union leader says the reforms are a step toward making federal workers “at will” employees, allowing for political considerations in hiring and firing decisions. “Everyone knows President Trump has no respect for the rule of law and this is just the latest case,” Cox added. The White House official who worked on the orders says this is false, and that the federal workforce isn’t moving to at-will employment. But staff must be liable to firing for cause, either poor performance or misconduct.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Few federal employees file formal complaints with their agency in response to sexual harassment and even fewer believe that their agency took corrective action against a harasser, according to a recent Merit Systems Protection Board Survey. “Employees may conclude that the risks of reporting harassment outweigh any potential personal or organizational benefits, and decide not to use agency procedures for addressing sexual harassment and holding the harasser(s) accountable for their misconduct,” the report said. Allsup’s certificate declares that he was awarded the post after his candidacy remained uncontested for four days. The county’s auditor confirmed the certificate’s authenticity to The Daily Beast. Allsup’s post is a small one on its face, but it’s influential. “If you want to take over a political party in this state, the best thing to do is to start at the PCO level and get a whole bunch of people who agree with your views elected as PCOs,” Hugh Spitzer, a professor of law at the University of Washington, told The Daily Beast.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/chance-the-rapper-joining-st-sabina-peace-rally/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wow! Sneed was surprised not to see a mention of legendary conservative maven Phyllis Schlafly when Illinois permitted ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment last week. In all due respect, Schlafly must have been turning over in her grave. Who was Schlafly? Dubbed the first lady of the conservative movement, Schlafly was credited by some historians as the reason the ERA failed to pass in Illinois! The ERA Amendment lost steam in the late 1970s because of the work of Schlafly’s “volunteer brigades,” who were known to cajole legislators with apple pies. As the nation’s most famous anti-feminist during the rebirth of the Women’s Liberation Movement decades — she was also the president of the Illinois Federation of Republican Women from 1956 to 1964. She wore her hair up, she did not burn her bra, and you just knew she wore a girdle. For a journalist in the late ’60s and ’70s, Schlafly’s name was in your Rolodex. When Schlafly died in 2016, at the age of 92, her New York Times obit described her as being one of the most polarizing figures in American public life, a self-described housewife with “a moral ferocity reminiscent of the ax-wielding prohibitionist Carry Nation.” She was a remarkable woman who, thank goodness, did not get the last word in the ongoing fight for a woman’s equal rights.)

— Never Mind the News Media: Politicians Test Direct-to-Voter Messaging – Sydney Ember (DIERSEN: Should I write a book about politicians who do NOT want you to first learn of anything by reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails? They want you to known only want they tell you, no more and no less. They do NOT want me to know about their events or their other activities. They do NOT want me to promote their events or their other activities. They do NOT want me to attend their events. They do not want me to report on their events or their other activities.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/31/us/politics/bernie-sanders-town-hall.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: These media methods have obvious appeal: Politicians can appear accessible but remain insulated from the press. They are also not altogether new. President Trump eschewed traditional television advertising during the 2016 campaign and can now overshadow even his own party’s message at the drop of a tweet. And many politicians have long made a practice of ducking reporters. Yet several factors have converged to elevate the practice: Fake news and false information about politics have proliferated; the public’s trust in the mainstream media is low; and social media platforms make unfiltered messaging easier than ever. As a result, there is a new urgency among politicians to deliver talking points directly. Some two-thirds of Americans get at least some of their news on social media, according to a recent Pew Research Center report. “Bernie and others are trying to find other ways that they can more directly connect with people,” said Guy Cecil, the chairman of Priorities USA, a Democratic “super PAC.” Many politicians blame the news media for the shift, claiming dishonest coverage has left them no other choice.)

My father fought type 1 diabetes from age 14, was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma, worked in the office of a nasty chemical plant, almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills, and did not buy a new car until he was 45, and it was a bottom of the line 2-door Chevy.

— Fatalities linked to ‘drugged’ driving keep rising – Mary Wisniewski
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-biz-drugged-driving-20180530-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A growing percentage of drivers who die in road crashes test positive for drugs, and states need to do a better job of educating the general public and law enforcement on the risks of driving while on marijuana, opioids and other substances, according to a new report. The Governors Highway Safety Association, a national nonprofit safety group, said in a report released Thursday that almost 44 percent of fatally injured drivers tested positive for drugs in 2016, the most recent year available, up from almost 28 percent in 2006. Meanwhile, the percentage of drivers killed in crashes who tested positive for alcohol dropped slightly to 38 percent in 2016 compared with 41 percent in 2006, the study found. Drunken driving has become socially unacceptable, and the same thing needs to happen with other substances, said Jim Hedlund, a former National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official who wrote the report. “The message has been out on drunk driving for 40 years now, and people have paid attention,” Hedlund said. “There’s a real social change that says it’s not acceptable to have two six-packs and go out and drive. The slogan years ago was: ‘Let’s have one for road.’ Now it’s: ‘Who’s the designated driver?’ I’d like to see the same thing for drugs.” A mix of substances were also found among drivers killed in fatal crashes. When test results for both alcohol and drugs were known, 49 percent of alcohol-positive drivers also had drugs in their systems. The report points to the challenges in tackling drug-impaired driving, including a lack of nationally accepted testing methods for drug impairment, the large number of drugs to test for and differences in effects between different drugs and drivers.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: And most importantly, the standards for dismissing, removing or demoting public employees are going to be changed to make these procedures easier. It now takes between six months and a year to remove a tenured federal employee for poor performance and an additional eight months to handle appeals. That makes tenured federal employees forty-four times less likely to get laid off than workers in the private sector. Under this flawed system, federal employees have stayed on the job after they have been caught stealing agency property or running personal businesses from work, and even after they have been arrested for using drugs during lunch breaks. These people need to go. But there is one more step Trump must take: banning IRS labor unions. We do not permit employees of the FBI, CIA, NSA or other such agencies to form or join unions. IRS employees, however, belong to the all-powerful Treasury Employees Union, whose contract grants them a substantial role in the management of this all-powerful agency.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you think you’ve been seeing a lot more bright young people living in Chicago lately, you have. Between 2010 and 2016, the city of Chicago gained more households in a key category—total income of more than $100,000 with the head of household under age 45—than any city in the country except for far larger New York, according to newly analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data. Specifically, the number of such households here grew from just under 105,000 to an estimated 131,000, according to the American Community Survey data. That increase of 26,000 led Houston (24,000), San Francisco (23,000), Washington, D.C. (19,000) and Los Angeles (16,000). And while on a percentage basis that demographic grew faster in San Francisco than in Chicago (57 percent versus 27 percent), the Windy City outpaced cities such as Houston and L.A. and tied red-hot Denver.)

http://insider.foxnews.com/2018/05/30/ingraham-angle-highlights-passages-starbucks-racial-bias-handbook
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Laura Ingraham highlighted some of the passages in the racial bias handbook handed out to employees in the training sessions. She said a Starbucks employee she spoke to on Tuesday pointed out that several black and Hispanic workers were “laughing through the book.” The book lays out so-called “Ground Rules,” including “honor[ing] other people’s truth.” Another section of the manual asked employees to recall when they first noticed their racial identity. Another asked employees about going “to work with your natural hair.” Fox News contributor Gianno Caldwell said the training sessions are all about protecting Starbucks’ bottom line, since some African-Americans vowed to boycott Starbucks after the April arrests. Democratic strategist Michael Starr Hopkins said he appreciates what the company did, arguing “far too often in this country we’re afraid to talk about race.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Walmart, the country’s largest private employer, announced Wednesday that it will pay for its workers to go back to school — as long as they get degrees in business or supply-chain management. The retailer is partnering with three universities to offer associate’s and bachelor’s degrees to 1.4 million part-time, full-time and salaried Walmart and Sam’s Club employees — a pitch to improve employee retention rates and engagement at work, while also drawing new workers. Walmart will cover the costs of tuition, books and fees, while employees will be required to pay $1 a day for the duration of their studies. “We know there [are] a lot of benefits from a business perspective,” Drew Holler, vice president of people innovation for Walmart U.S., said on a call with reporters. “We know we’re going to see an influx of applications.” Degrees will be offered by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Brandman University in Irvine, Calif., and Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb., all nonprofit institutions with online programs for working adults. Rachel Carlson, chief executive of Guild Education, a Denver-based company that will oversee the program, pointed out that the program allows employees to earn a degree without amassing college debt.)

Needless-to-say, Republican activists, Republican candidates, Republican elected officials, and Republican party leaders should not seek or accept money from individuals, organizations, companies, etc. that want to dump planks in the Republican Party platform or to promote anything that is anti-Republican. – Dave Diersen

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/05/24/trump-donor-daca-gop-david-macneili-607973
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Chicago-area businessman who has donated more than $1 million to President Donald Trump is threatening to deny contributions to Republican candidates unless they act on an immigration bill before Congress. David MacNeil, who employs 1,600 people through his Bolingbrook-based WeatherTech automotive company, told POLITICO in an interview that the issue has grown deeply personal, given that a top employee in his company could face deportation if a deal isn’t reached for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. MacNeil is the second prominent Chicago-area businessman and GOP donor in a week to cut off or threaten to withhold campaign contributions over the immigration debate. On Wednesday, former Exelon CEO John Rowe told POLITICO he would cut off resources to Republicans who refuse to sign onto a discharge petition that would force a vote on legislation related to so-called “Dreamers,” while rewarding those who did with contributions and fundraising events. Both Rowe and MacNeil belong to the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition, which is calling on GOP lawmakers to sign the DACA discharge petition. “I’m saying this as a political donor who’s donated seven figures in the last couple of years: I will not donate any more money to anyone who doesn’t support DACA, period,” MacNeil said in a phone call while traveling in Italy. “I’m putting my money where my mouth is.” MacNeil is among the CEOs who backed Trump before the 2016 election, inspired by the campaign’s “Make America Great Again,” mantra. A Canadian emigrant who is now a U.S. citizen, MacNeil has long touted that his own products are made in America. He underwrote a Trump fundraiser in Bolingbrook just before the 2016 election, then gave $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee. MacNeil said that a top-performing employee who has been with him for more than 10 years will represent the WeatherTech at the Governor’s Export Awards reception Thursday night, in which the company is a finalist. The employee was brought to the country as a toddler.)

The news article reminds readers that MacNeil was a huge financial backer of President Donald Trump and that MacNeil’s current frustration involves the issue of immigration, mainly the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. “I’m saying this as a political donor who’s donated seven figures in the last couple of years: I will not donate any more money to anyone who doesn’t support DACA, period,” MacNeil told POLITICO, according to the article. “I’m putting my money where my mouth is.”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Ives backer Uihlein tells magazine he’ll vote for Rauner over Pritzker – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: Obviously, Rauner’s political consultants tell him a) that Republicans will vote for him no matter what because Pritzker rejects more planks in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform than he does, b) that Rauner should focus on getting votes from those who reject planks in the IRP platform, and c) that means dumping voters, dumping organizations, dumping companies, dumping etc. that support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and other planks in IRP platform. Further, obviously, Rauner’s political consultants tell him that more anti-Trumps than pro-Trumps will vote in the November 6, 2018 election, so he should dump voters, dump organizations, dump companies, dump etc. that support Trump. Needless-to-say, no political consultant who is a Republican would give Rauner the aforesaid advice.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-richard-uihlein-bruce-rauner-20180524-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But Uihlein broke from Rauner after his signature on legislation expanding taxpayer-subsidized abortions and backed Ives, the three-term Wheaton Republican who narrowly lost to Rauner in March. Uihlein gave her $2.5 million. “Jeanne proved that people are hungry for change,” Uihlein says in the article. Author John J. Miller writes that Uihlein is “now skeptical about Rauner’s ability to deliver (change) but says that the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, J.B. Pritzker, would be a disaster for Illinois: ‘I will vote for Rauner over Pritzker.’ ” State Sen. Sam McCann, a Republican from Downstate Plainview, is also mounting a third-party bid. The article also recounts how Uihlein met John Tillman, chairman and CEO of the Illinois Policy Institute. Last decade, Tillman was looking for work after selling his used sporting goods store. “I’d been getting the Uline catalog for a while,” Tillman said. “So I wrote a letter to the owner.” The article says Tillman and Uihlein met, but their conversation turned to what was described as “Tillman’s real passion: creating a network of freedom-minded organizations in Illinois.” “Dick became my anchor donor,” Tillman says in the article, adding that Uihlein gave him $50,000 in seed money to start the institute. Millions more from Uihlein have flowed since. In February, Rauner said he wouldn’t give the institute “another nickel.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Not mentioned in the article is Uihlein’s relationship with conservative talk show host and political operative Dan Proft, who played a leading role in Ives’ campaign for governor. Uihlein gave $95,000 to Proft’s failed bid for the GOP governor nomination in 2010, then gave him an additional $500,000 later to help seed Proft’s political operation. Since then, Uihlein has given Proft’s Liberty Principles political action committee $12.1 million, including $3 million in January. And Uihlein has become a prolific donor to federal candidates, including giving $100,000 to a super PAC backing Republican Roy Moore in a special Senate election in Alabama. Moore was accused of sexually molesting or assaulting teens ages 14 and 16 while he was in his 30s. Moore denied the allegations but lost the election to Democrat Doug Jones.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Military veterans who were discharged for relatively minor offenses say they often can’t get jobs, and they hope a recent warning to employers by the state of Connecticut will change that. The state’s human rights commission told employers last month they could be breaking the law if they discriminate against veterans with some types of less-than-honorable discharges. Blanket policies against hiring such veterans could be discriminatory, the commission said, because the military has issued them disproportionately to black, Latino, gay and disabled veterans. At least one other state, Illinois, already prohibits hiring discrimination based on a veteran’s discharge status, advocates say, but Connecticut appears to be the first to base its decision on what it deems discrimination by the military. Regardless of the state’s reasons, veterans say, the attention there could at least educate employers.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— The charges made in Winchester v. Illinois Republican Party (IRP) are extremely serious. Constructively, Winchester has charged the IRP with voter fraud. What does the IRP, that is, Bruce Rauner, want Illinois Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains to know about Winchester v. IRP? From what I see, the answer is absolutely nothing. Needless-to-say, the less informed that Illinois Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains are, the less creditable that they are. By its failure/refusal to communicate, the IRP motivates me to fill the communication void with GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. – Dave Diersen

MADISON RECORD
— State central committeeman Winchester sues state GOP; case removed to federal court
https://madisonrecord.com/stories/511424774-state-central-committeeman-winchester-sues-state-gop-case-removed-to-federal-court
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bob Winchester, central committeeman of the Illinois Republican Party since 1992, claims in U.S. district court that the party rigged an election against him. His lawyer, Stephen Boulton of Chicago, alleges that the party improperly favored State Sen. Chapin Rose of Champaign for committeeman in an election on April 18. According to Boulton’s complaint, irregularities occurred at county conventions across the 15th Congressional district. He wrote that irregularities changed the vote “from the true result, a majority in favor of Winchester, to a false result, an alleged majority in favor of Rose.” In an interview on May 21, Boulton said that he had “a number” of affidavits from Madison County which demonstrate that Bob Winchester won the election. Last month, the Record reported that precinct committee men and women in Madison County chose Winchester over Rose by a margin of approximately 60 to 40 percent, and then as a sign of unity voted by acclamation to place 100 percent of the county’s vote in favor of Winchester. Winchester filed the suit in Hardin County, against state central committee members and State Board of Elections members who certified Rose’s election. The party removed the action to federal court on May 18. Boulton’s complaint described a county convention where, “only Rose was presented as a candidate for whom votes could be cast.” “Rose alone was nominated, and by the chairman of the convention,” the complaint states. He wrote that the chairman reported a unanimous vote for Rose to party staff. Boulton said it happened in Fayette County, where Randy Pollard serves as county GOP chairman. “It was over in 45 seconds,” Boulton said. “No understood what happened.” In the complaint, he wrote that several county chairmen reported incorrect results to staff, favoring Rose and that county chairmen and staff acted as agents of the state party. He wrote that the party, through staff, participated in the election by recruiting candidates and directing candidates to withdraw. He wrote that staff opposed Winchester due to “a strong likelihood of losing their positions if the present chairman is not re-elected.” The central committee re-elected its chairman, Tim Schneider, on May 19. Boulton said the committee seated Rose over an objection. “We expected that,” he said. “If Winchester was sitting there rather than Rose, the outcome might have been different.” The court clerk assigned the action to District Judge Staci Yandle.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Sen. Rose ‘railroaded’ over incumbent by GOP in State Central Committeeman race, affidavit says – Karen Kidd
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511425048-sen-rose-railroaded-over-incumbent-by-gop-in-state-central-committeeman-race-affidavit-says
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Fayette County Precinct committeeman said he was “confused” by a “nomination process” in April that somehow led to a win for state Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) over Robert Winchester, the longtime incumbent in the race for Republican State Central Committeeman in the 15th Congressional District, according to an affidavit obtained by Prairie State Wire. “After this sequence of rapid nomination and voice vote on closing nominations, which in my best estimate took much less than a minute, I turned to a colleague and asked, ‘What just happened?’,” Fayette County Precinct Committeeman Glen Mills said in the affidavit filed with the Illinois Board of Elections. Mills, a Brownstown resident, said in his affidavit that he “later learned” Randy Pollard, Rauner’s downstate director who acted as chair during the convention when the election took place, “reported the vote for Fayette County as unanimous in favor of Chapin Rose.” Mills claims in his affidavit that draft minutes from the convention back up his own memories about how Rose came to win the seat on the Republican State Central Committee that had been held by Winchester since 1992. “The only word I can use to describe the election proceeding on a subjective level is that the election of Mr. Rose was intentionally ‘railroaded’ through the convention at high speed while this precinct committeeman (Mills) was confused by the process,” Mills said in his affidavit. “I do not believe I was given a fair chance to vote for Mr. Winchester in the election for State Central Committeeman for the 15th District conducted on April 18, 2018, or even the opportunity to vote ‘present’ or otherwise not have my precinct’s weighted vote be counted for Mr. Rose.” In April, sources informed Prairie State Wire that Winchester had retained counsel to launch a challenge to voting procedures in his Republican State Central Committee re-election bid. Rose, an assistant Republican caucus leader, has represented the 51st district since 2013, having previously been a member of the state House for about a decade. The Illinois state Senate’s 51st District encompasses all of Dewitt, Piatt, Moultrie, Douglas and Shelby counties and parts of McLean, Champaign, Vermilion, Edgar and Macon counties. Sources told Prairie State Wire in April that the state GOP had run Rose against the incumbent Winchester to punish Winchester for backing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in her strong but unsuccessful March primary bid against Gov. Bruce Rauner. Earlier this month, Winchester’s attorney, Steve Boulton of Peraica & Associates in Chicago, said in a letter to state GOP General Counsel John Fogarty that the race results had been determined by a “group of unelected and merely appointed staff members” with “personal and financial interests” in the re-election of current state GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. “The procedure may have well have been employed before, but it is not properly authorized and stands in contravention of the plain language of the Election Code,” Boulton wrote in his letter. “Repetition of an unlawful practice does not make it legal. If such were true bank robbery would be legal today.” In his complaint filed in federal court, Winchester alleged the Illinois Republican party rigged the April 18 election against him. In an interview published this week in the Madison-St. Clair Record, Boulton claimed to have “a number” of affidavits that prove Winchester actually won the election. A source told the Prairie State Wire that Winchester was not even mentioned as an option by Pollard and that he’d called for a voice vote during the April 18 election. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Mills, in his affidavit, described what happened as slightly different from what the source described. Pollard, “very politically powerful in Fayette County,” supported Rose before the convention, “which was confirmed when Mr. Pollard had papers distributed to the Convention supporting Mr. Chapin (Rose), including to me, an action which I considered improper,” Mills said in his affidavit. “At the commencement of the election Mr. Pollard announced that there were two candidates for State Central Committeeman, Chapin Rose and Robert Winchester,” the affidavit said. “After announcing the candidates, Mr. Pollard immediately called for ‘nominations’ which caused me great confusion since he had just announced the two candidates. I did not know what the nominations were for, or what purpose they served, given that the candidates had just been announced.” Pollard then nominated Rose, who “received an immediate second,” the affidavit said. “I remained confused by this procedure, since the candidates were already announced by Mr. Pollard and I was trying to grasp why a nomination process was being conducted at all. In very short order, a voice vote to close nominations occurred, and Mr. Pollard declared the election over. I do not recall any actual vote for Mr. Chapin (Rose) at all.” Mills said in his affidavit that he reviewed draft minutes from the convention, a copy of which was attached to his affidavit, and found they “comport with my recollection that no election vote was actually taken.” “Further, the minutes reflect that Mr. Pollard nominated Mr. Rose only after asking for nominations three times,” the affidavit said. “This comports with my recollection that the actual sequence of from [sic] nomination of Mr. Rose to closing of nominations was very quick.” Pollard, Mills and Rose did not immediately respond to Prairie State Wire requests for comment.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Drama continues in state GOP ranks – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-chicago-fop-protest-20180521-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party held its organizational meeting Saturday and re-elected Gov. Rauner’s handpicked chairman as part of a compromise with insurgent conservatives. But despite that attempt to show unity, the battle is continuing and may end up in a federal courtroom. Bob Winchester, a former state representative from Rosiclare, had been the longest-serving member of the Republican State Central Committee, serving since 1992. Winchester is an opponent of Rauner and party Chairman Tim Schneider, and he was challenged for re-election by state Sen. Chapin Rose of Mahomet. The State Board of Elections certified Rose as the winner at a special May 10 meeting and said it didn’t have the authority to investigate what Winchester alleges were misdeeds that made Rose the victor to represent the 15th Congressional District GOP. Winchester’s attorney, Stephen Boulton, said he filed suit a week ago in Downstate Hardin County to try to stop Rose from being seated, but his office said the case was not electronically recorded as being filed until late last week, too late to prevent Rose from being seated. The lawsuit contends both the state GOP and the State Board of Elections violated Winchester’s federally constitutionally protected due process rights and that county vote totals were changed to a “false result” in favor of Rose. The Illinois GOP has filed notice to move the case to the U.S. District Court in Benton. “The Illinois Republican Party is confident that the State Central Committee elections were conducted in accordance with state law, our party bylaws, and in an open and transparent manner,” Illinois Republican Party Executive Director Andrew Collins said in a statement. “We are also confident that the results reported to the party by the county Republican central committees were accurate, that the State Board (of Elections) certification of those results was proper and that the results are now final,” Collins said.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Many Americans have less than $5k set aside for retirement (DIERSEN: Are you on track to have “80 percent of your former earnings” when you retire? In today’s dollars, my “former earnings” was $125,325. 80% of that is $100,260, but my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $51,864, or only 41% of my “former earnings.”)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/working/many-americans-have-less-than-5k-set-aside-for-retirement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: We’re told of the importance of saving for retirement, especially given the way healthcare and other senior living costs continue to rise. But apparently, a large number of workers aren’t listening. In fact, one-third of Americans have less than $5,000 set aside for the future, according to new data from Northwestern Mutual. Incidentally, 21 percent of Americans have no retirement savings at all. It’s one thing to have less than $5,000 in your nest egg when you’re only in your 20s or even 30s. But if you’ve been in the workforce for quite some time, that $5,000 doesn’t paint a great picture. And if you don’t take steps to ramp up, you’ll be sorry for it later on. Social Security just won’t cut it Many workers don’t save for the future because they assume they can live on Social Security. But that’s a dangerous, misguided assumption. In a best-case scenario, Social Security will replace about 40 percent of the average earner’s pre-retirement income. Most seniors, however, need double that amount to live comfortably. Even if you’re willing to cut corners in retirement, you can only slash so many basics. You’ll still need a roof over your head, a way of getting around town, and food on the table. Therefore, a frugal lifestyle might allow you to get away with spending a bit less than 80 percent of your former earnings, but not much. That means that while your Social Security income will help cover the bills when you’re older, you still will need a nice amount of savings to avoid falling short.)

What information do you hope to get about today’s Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association (IRCCA) meeting and today’s Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) meeting, from who do you hope to get that information, and when do you hope to get that information? I hope to get a report on who spoke at the meetings, major announcements that were made, votes that were taken, the outcomes of those votes, and when and where the next meeting will be held. Most importantly, what did Mark Shaw specifically promise to do concerning conservatives?  I hope to get email reports from my IRP county chairman and from my IRP SCC member. I hope to get those reports before I send out this evening’s GOPUSA ILLINOIS email. Historically, beyond outrageously, beyond unacceptably, Illinois Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains have only gotten reports of what happened at IRCCA and IRP SCC meetings from the Democrat news media. (FROM THE ARTICLE: As lawmakers in Springfield careen toward a May 31 adjournment deadline, let’s get a few things straight. They haven’t agreed yet on a balanced budget for the fiscal year that starts in six weeks. They haven’t passed legislation to deal with the state’s alarming pension debt. They haven’t negotiated changes to programs that would make Illinois more business and tax friendly. The willful negligence of floating past the most serious challenges facing Illinois is repeating itself. No one should be surprised. The Illinois legislature is an avoidance expert. SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE
— Basic journalism wasn’t done, and it led to big mistake – Adrian Vore (DIERSEN: Since 2000, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have hinted/implied/argued/shouted not only that my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are full of “big mistakes,” but that I purposely make them. Should I sue my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes?)
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/readers-rep/sd-me-readersrepnb-0520-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: he correction ran on the upper left corner of B1 May 12. Experienced news readers know that if a correction runs on a front page, the error has to be big. Indeed, it was. The entire premise of the Michael Smolens column that ran the day before was erroneous. Smolens, a highly experienced former political reporter and government editor, wrongly reported that John Cox, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, discusses issues with disgraced ex-San Diego Mayor Bob Filner. The factual error was bad enough, but it also has led to suspicions of biased coverage and “gotcha journalism” over fairness. What appeared to be a tantalizing news lead came out of a meeting Cox had with the U-T editorial board April 23. Smolens was sitting in on the meeting to gather possible subject matter for his column. Cox was talking about getting a statistic on pensions and developing a relationship with Bob Fellner — NOT Filner.)

May 18 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Are you a Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain in Illinois? Tomorrow, all 102 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) county party chairman and all 18 IRP State Central Committee (SCC) members are scheduled to meet in Springfield. Have you received notification of the time and location of the Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association (IRCCA) meeting and/or IRP SCC meeting? Have you been invited to attend the meetings? Have you been asked to provide input for the agendas for the meetings, and if so, what input did you provide? Have you received a copy of the agendas for the meetings? Are you going to attend the meetings? Have you been provided with all the details of the deal struck between Bruce Rauner and Mark Shaw to placate the “conservative insurgents” in the IRP, that is, the 342,906 who voted for Ives? Do you approve or disapprove of that deal? Why? Have you asked your IRP county chairman and your IRP SCC member to vote for or against the deal? Will your IRP county party chairman email you a report of what happened at the May 19 IRCCA meeting? Will your IRP SCC member email you a report of what happened at the May 19 IRP SCC meeting?

What do you want Mark Shaw to do in his roles as the Co-Chairman of the IRP and the President of the IRCCA to organize Illinois conservatives and to “lead conservative and grassroots outreach for the” IRP? Should he:

  1. Encourage Rauner to sign a pledge to defend and advance all the planks in the IRP platform, including its traditional family, right to life, immigration, and Second Amendment planks?
  2. Identify who the conservative leaders are in each county in Illinois, meet with them on a one on one basis, meet with them at regional meetings, and/or meet with them at statewide meetings?
  3. Identify who the conservative leaders are in Illinois on a platform plank basis, including those who have taken the lead on the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and Second Amendment planks and meet with them on a one on one basis, meet with them at regional meetings, and/or meet with them at statewide meetings?
  4. Encourage Dave Diersen to form the “Republican Assembly of DuPage County” to reach out to and organize the conservatives in DuPage County?
  5. Encourage all Illinois conservatives and Republicans to read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails?
  6. Encourage all Illinois conservative and Republican leaders to keep diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists? – Dave Diersen

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— RAUNER – YAY!
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/05/rauner-yay.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yay! Yay, teachers! Yay, [Democrat Illinois Supreme Court Justice] Ann Burke! Yay, Israel! Yay, Eunice Shriver! Yay, Kennedys! Yay, [Loyola] Ramblers! CapitolFax’s Rich Miller pulled together Governor Rauner uncomfortably “yaying” for an array of interesting folks, groups and other miscellaneous cheering reasons. Missing from the collection, though, is Governor Rauner’s “Yay, Planned Parenthood! Yay, Sanctuary state! Yay, Rauner Party leadership that stopped the IL GOP Platform-hugging conservative wing’s insurgent takeover!”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and RINOs a) demonize, denigrate, and condemn those who voted for Ives as being “conservative insurgents;” b) say that “Rauner is happy GOP is ‘working together’ after leadership squabble;” c) say that Rauner said “Well, I love seeing everybody coming together and working together and forming partnerships and alliances. That’s all good;” d) say that Rauner sees the recent Illinois Republican Party (IRP) leadership deal as giving Ives voters a “larger voice” in the IRP; and d) say that Rauner sees the deal as “a sign of unity for his re-election efforts.” Are you a “conservative insurgent,” that is, were you one of the 342,906 who voted for Ives? I did. Do you believe the deal will give you a greater voice in the IRP? How did you learn of the deal? If you are a Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, did you first learn of the deal a) from the IRP, b) from your representative on the IRP State Central Committee, c) from the officers of your IRP county party organization, d) from the officers of your IRP township/ward party organization, e) from the Democrat news media, or f) from Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails?)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Factors that discourage Illinois residents who are religious, conservative, and/or Republican from planning on attending the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee meeting in Springfield this Saturday, May 19:
– Those who want Tim Schneider reelected as IRP chairman have not asked you to attend,

– The meeting agenda might not include a public comment period,
– The meeting room might be filled to capacity before you get there,
– It appears that the Winchester v. IRP lawsuit has not been filed and that it will not be filed,
– Ives and other IRP chairman candidate Mark Shaw supporters might not be allowed to speak,
– Possibly, the meeting will be broadcast live over the internet, and
– It appears that Tim Schneider will be reelected IRP chairman no matter what.  – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: WHAT: William J. Kelly, independent candidate for Illinois Governor, will have a press conference on Friday to discuss the future of the post-Rauner Illinois GOP. Kelly also plans to speak at the Illinois GOP State Central Committee meeting on Saturday morning and will be broadcasting live from the State Central Committee meeting. Kelly has released the following statement: “The last four years have been difficult ones for those of us who sounded the warning bell on Bruce Rauner and that bell has finally been heard at a terrible cost: Illinois is now a sanctuary state and expanded taxpayer-funded abortion on demand is the law of the land. The blame is not Governor Rauner’s alone; he had help. I blame Rauner’s payroll conservatives at Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois Opportunity Project, and Liberty Principles PAC. In 2013, when Rauner announced for Governor, his history as a liberal pro-abortion, pro-amnesty Democrat donor was already well-known. Ignoring this, a number of conservative leaders and donors heralded Rauner’s coming. Illinois Policy Institute’s John Tillman and Liberty Principles PAC’s Dan Proft were well-paid to induce conservative voters to support Rauner despite his left-wing history. A number of Illinois Tea Party leaders forced Rauner on us too, attacking anyone who opposed him. For the last four years I, too, have endured the public attacks of Rauner’s payroll conservatives. However, since Rauner’s betrayal on illegal immigration and abortion, many former Raunerites have apologized to me. We need to recruit new conservative and tea party leaders to take the place of those that let us down. I am running for Illinois Governor to reform, rebuild, and redeem the Illinois Republican Party now and for the future. Please join me.”

— Dozens of Crete homes made from Sears kits – Jerry Shnay (DIERSEN: During the 1950s and early 1960s, I frequently visited my aunt and uncle who lived in a Sears home just four doors north of my parents’ 1926 home on Wood Street in Crete. They had introduced my father and mother to each other and they sparked my interest in cars. The homes two and three doors north of my parent’s home are also Sears homes.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/daily-southtown/opinion/ct-sta-shnay-column-st-0515-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here are some facts about Crete. The first settlers came to the area in 1836. The Will County town was incorporated in 1880 and the 2010 census listed its population as 8,227. In 2012, the Crete-Monee High School football team won a state championship. Crete also is home to more than 40 houses sold by Sears, making it the largest repository for these dwellings in the south suburbs, according to Phyllis Monks, president of the Crete Area Historical Society. Monks said residents were able to build “kit” homes because trains made frequent stops at the local depot, leaving all that was needed to build one in two boxcars.)

— Report offers solutions for Chicago region’s segregation woes – Patrick M. O’Connell (DIERSEN: What have you done to cut down your work commute time? Since my wife and I got married in 1978, we have always lived in walking distance of a commuter train station in Wheaton. I bought a one bedroom condo in 1976 and a studio condo in 1974 in downtown Chicago so that I could walk to work and to night classes. I bought a new town home in 1972 when I worked in Harvey. I asked Firestone Stores to assign me to its Chicago Heights Store in 1970 when I was living with my mother and brother in Crete.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-met-chicago-segregation-report-20180511-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Moore wanted to move closer to work but said he could not afford the rent at apartments on the Northwest Side or nearby suburbs that would have made his commute more manageable. And even if he could, Moore said he often felt out of place in the predominantly white neighborhoods. “It’s almost like being an alien, you know,” Moore said. “It’s like, do I belong here?” Moore, who lives in North Lawndale, eventually found work as a community organizer in a job that reduced his travel time by more than half. Moore’s hunt for affordable housing, a shorter commute and a different neighborhood are among the elements highlighted in the Metropolitan Planning Council’s new report on the Chicago region’s segregation, which offers a buffet of initiatives that take aim at entrenched racism and inequities holding back the region.)

https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/how-free-is-the-free-press-in-trumps-america/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There is an old saying, “He who pays the piper calls the tune,” meaning that someone who provides the money has the right to determine what it is spent on. In journalism these days it has taken on a sinister connotation for everything from censoring school newspapers to the firing and even murder of outspoken journalists. Here in the U.S. we like to reflect on the concept of a free press as written into the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. But President Donald Trump describes journalists who offer anything but fawning coverage of him and his administration as “enemies of the people.” Another president, Richard Nixon, also once declared, “The press is the enemy.” Carl Bernstein, one of the Washington Post reporters who exposed Nixon’s Watergate scandal in the 1970s, says Trump’s rhetoric is similar to Nixon’s in that he is “trying to divide the country, and make the conduct of the press the issue, instead of the conduct of the president.” The Trump administration is trying to get the public to buy the idea that when a newspaper or television network reports anything that is at all unflattering to the president that newspaper or network is automatically displaying its bias. “In Donald Trump’s America,” said the Los Angeles Times in an editorial, “the mere act of reporting news unflattering to the president is held up as evidence of bias. Journalists are slandered. Facts that contradict Trump’s version of reality are dismissed as ‘fake news.’ Reporters and their news organizations are ‘pathetic,’ ‘very dishonest,’ ‘failing,’ and even, in one memorable turn of phrase, ‘a pile of garbage.’” While Trump aims his fire at even objective reporting that shines light on negative features of his administration, not all newspapers, television networks and other media outlets are placed on his enemies list. Some, like Fox News, shower praise on the president almost round the clock and he rewards them with frequent exclusive interviews. It is impossible to avoid the conclusion that a big difference between the networks and outlooks he likes and the ones he opposes correlates to who owns those various networks and outlets. It goes without saying that the high costs of putting out the news favors billionaires to become owners of huge chunks of print and broadcasting media and it is not always easy to keep track of who owns what. Recent headlines provide an example of how it can get confusing: “Comcast prepares all-cash bid to gate-crash Disney-Fox deal,” or “Disney Could Give Up Sky to Get Fox Assets.” Another fact is that big money doesn’t just limit itself to controlling editorial policy. At times it goes after the ability of newspapers to even continue to exist. Clarity about the nature of what goes on in a world where big money influences journalism was the aim of a May 8 Democracy Now show with Amy Goodman and Juan González. They talked about how rank and file journalists are rising up against a Wall Street hedge fund that is chewing up and spitting out newsrooms across the country. Alden Global Capital, a hedge fund, owns Digital First media, the nation’s second largest newspaper chain.)
