And a race is shaping up in the 13th Congressional District. DUSTIN PETERSON, 37, of Clinton, an independent insurance agent who has been DeWitt County GOP chairman since 2014, is taking on incumbent member FRED FLORETH of Springfield, a lawyer finishing his first four-year term in the party post. “I’m not running against Fred, I’m running more just to try to expand my role with the Republican Party, and try to learn more and be more involved and try to, for lack of a better word … get a little more of a youth movement in there,” Peterson said. Peterson said he was neutral in the governor’s primary, has supported Rauner in the past and supports him in the general election. “Hopefully we can all come together as a party,” he said. (FROM THE ARTICLE: It wasn’t democracy’s finest hour. On Election Day, the sole Republican candidate for the U.S. House in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District was a Holocaust denier and neo-Nazi. And he got more than 20,000 votes. Ugh. Ideally, Arthur Jones would have received no votes because he deserves no support. But even one vote – his own – would have been enough to win Tuesday’s primary because he ran unopposed. Instead he got 20,458. The Cook County Clerk’s Office reports that 70 percent of suburban voters in the district pulling a Republican ballot checked his name. We blame a lack of situational awareness. Republicans didn’t bother to recruit a legitimate candidate because the district is gerrymandered to elect a Democrat. So Jones waltzed in and now is set to run on their ticket in November against incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski. This embarrassment is on Republicans. Let both parties stay awake during future filing periods to prevent unsavory characters from hijacking their good names. Most voters didn’t intend to support Jones, we’re certain. They voted the party line and automatically filled in the box next to his name. Why research an unopposed candidate? We wish they had paid more attention to news reports. If they feel a little chagrined, they ought to. The lesson here is democracy is imperfect. But it’s also self-correcting, 3rd District residents. This November: Vote Lipinski. All of you.)

— Next thing you know, cemeteries will be voting in DuPage – Editorial (DIERSEN: Since 2015, there have been two cemeteries in my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton – Wheaton Cemetery (http://wheatoncemetery.org/) and St. Michael’s Cemetery (https://www.parishesonline.com/find/st-michaels-cemetery). Of my precinct’s 504 registered voters, according to the DuPage County Election Commission (DCEC), 105 (21%) cast Republican Ballots, 98 (19%) cast Democrat ballots, and 301 (60%) did not vote. Beyond outrageously, beyond unacceptably, in 2015, the DCEC let my critics/opponents unethically gerrymander my precinct to punish me and Jeanne Ives. The DCEC let my critics/opponents a) take away about 100 residences on the west side of my precinct and b) give me about 100 residences out Ives’ precinct to the east. The DCEC let my critics/opponents draw Ives into my precinct. But then, my critics/opponents drew her out of my new precinct and into Precinct 65 because she asked them to.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Oh, DuPage County, have you forgotten who you are? Generations of Chicagoans fled to you, DuPage, to escape the political corruption of the big bad city. In Chicago, the rule of thumb was to “vote early and often.” In DuPage, a single honorable vote, almost always for a Republican, sufficed. In Chicago, the quiet residents of cemeteries voted. In DuPage, only the living, if sometimes barely. In Chicago, vote returns from the “river wards” could be held up for hours, allowing for a little late-night skullduggery to put a Machine favorite in a tight race over the top. In DuPage, goodness no. But on Tuesday in DuPage, the election process looked about as squared away as in Chicago circa 1947. Final voting results were not released until roughly eight hours after the polls closed, about 3 a.m. A skeptic might wonder if everything was on the up and up. We’re told it was a hardware problem. Elections judges were unable to get results from scanning machines, which are used to read paper ballots, and the judges had to lug 268 of the machines to the election commission office in Wheaton to tally the results. Now, on Tuesday, election officials will be on the hot seat. The DuPage County Board has asked them to attend a board meeting to explain what went wrong and how to fix it. “I promise you, there’s going to be changes,” County Board President Dan Cronin told the Daily Herald. “I am not done with this.” But there’s little mystery about what should be done — it was right on the ballot. An advisory referendum question asked voters whether the DuPage County Election Commission should be dissolved and its responsibilities taken over by the office of the county clerk. Fifty-six percent of the voters said that was a good idea. After Tuesday’s show of incompetence by the election commission, you can bet that even more voters now would say that’s a good idea. Cronin, who has been a leader in Illinois in trying to eliminate unnecessary units of government, is pushing the merger, which he says would make the election process more accountable and save DuPage taxpayers $300,000 a year. But the change requires a change in state law, and the Legislature has been slow to go along. Why? Because the Legislature is always slow to go along when it comes to eliminating unnecessary units of government. It’s about jobs and political turf. For the same reason, the Legislature has been insufficiently aggressive in eliminating township governments. Cronin is right. The DuPage Election Commission bungled it badly on Tuesday. And we were feeling the ghosts of those old Chicago ward heelers.)

According to the book “Being Miss America: Behind the Rhinestone Curtain” by former Miss America Kate Shindle, Harold’s “ultra-conservative views” had kept her from winning the Miss Illinois pageant for several years. Shindle writes that Harold was asked in a pageant interview about adoption by same-sex couples. “Harold reportedly stated that she would choose to place a child in an abusive heterosexual home rather than with a loving gay couple,” the book says. Harold said she did not remember that exchange, saying she supports same-sex adoption and foster parenting, and “if I said what they alleged, it’s absolutely wrong.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Maybe some of the 13,158 suburban Cook County residents who voted for Jones strongly believe in freedom of speech and Jones’ right to express his views. Perhaps some of the 3,023 voters in Chicago who punched his ticket agree with his positions on immigration (“no more sanctuary cities!”) or his support of 2nd Amendment rights (“concealed carry for personal protection!”). I suppose it’s possible some of the 4,093 people in Will County who cast ballots for Jones did so knowing about his anti-Semitic views but supported him anyway because of his stances against abortion and same-sex marriage. More likely, the 65 DuPage County residents who voted for Jones, 70, didn’t know about his former membership in the American Nazi Party or that he ran for mayor of Milwaukee as a member of the National Socialist White People’s Party in 1976. Jones, however, told me Wednesday he believes the votes for him were no accident. “The people who voted for me knew exactly who I was,” Jones said. “They liked what I had to say.” Jones said the Republican Party sent mailers and made robocalls telling people about his views, so voters must have known. “That might have gotten me a lot of votes,” he said of the party’s efforts. I think it’s more likely the vast majority of Jones voters simply supported whatever GOP candidate happened to be on the ballot. “Yes, I think your surmise is spot on,” said Sean Morrison of Orland Park, chair of the Cook County Republican Party, state committeeman for the 3rd District and Cook County Board member. “Look, the overwhelming majority of most folks in the district have absolutely no idea who the Nazi Art Jones is,” Morrison told me Wednesday. “I feel that they very likely pulled their Republican ballot and voted down the line.” Jones has previously run for the seat, but Republicans either successfully knocked him off the ballot by challenging his petitions or ran legitimate candidates whose totals dwarfed the few votes cast for Jones. This year was different. I asked Morrison why Republicans failed to field a “serious” candidate to challenge seven-term incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski, a conservative who narrowly withstood a primary challenge from progressive Marie Newman. “Well, it was certainly not for lack of trying to draw in candidates,” Morrison said. “The 3rd Congressional district has historically voted very high for Congressman Lipinski. Even many Republicans vote for him due to his strong family values positions, so he receives a great deal of crossover voters. “He typically wins his general races in 70 percent to 30 percent margins. Most prospects see the seemingly futile attempt in running against him.” In other words, the problem isn’t so much that 20,000 Republicans may have just voted for a Nazi. It’s the partisan political system where the party in power gets to redraw district maps every 10 years to maximize odds of retaining power by keeping races noncompetitive. “The seat is mathematically drawn like the majority of districts as a Democrat district seat,” Morrison said. “This is the larger issue citizens should recognize and be concerned about in Illinois. “The Democrats have controlled the district remap drawings for several decades now. The Democrat-controlled gerrymandering is unabashed and (is the reason) why we have a real one-party system throughout Illinois.” I accept Morrison’s explanation as based in fact and admire his skill at spinning this as the fault of Democrats. Still, I think the candidacy of Jones harms the Republican brand more than it does the Democrats.
On a national scale Wednesday, reaction to Jones’ win ranged from shock and disbelief to outrage across traditional and social media channels. “Arthur Jones is a Nazi, not a Republican. It is a disgrace that he has won the Republican nomination,” Norman Coleman, chair of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said in a statement. “The GOP didn’t invite Jones into the party,” Coleman said. “The only mistake was not running a candidate in an uncompetitive, safe-Democrat district.” The Illinois GOP continues to denounce Jones. A state party spokesman told The New York Times the party would devote resources to supporting a Republican to run as an independent against Lipinski in November. “Arthur Jones is not a real Republican; he is a Nazi whose disgusting, bigoted views have no place in our nation’s discourse,” Tim Schneider, the Illinois Republican Party chairman, said in a statement. There was, however, some good news for Democrats: In the second of two statewide primaries this year (Texas being the other), turnout was significantly higher for Democrats than in either 2010 or 2014. He has supported that concept for years, but the legislature has been reluctant to give the county permission to do it. “I look forward to the day the election commission is under the auspices of the clerk’s office,” Cronin said. “There will be accountability, better responsiveness and better professionalism — I am certain of that.” On Wednesday, election commission officials said the problem with the optical scan voting machines was caused by so-called “ender cards”– similar to paper ballots — that are needed to close the machines and tabulate results. It turns out the ender cards the commission purchased from Liberty Systems couldn’t be run through the machines. “The paper stock used by the vendor for this election was not to specification and didn’t fit through the scanner,” said Joseph Sobecki, the commission’s executive director. “That resulted in none of the locations being able to close the optical scan.” The problem didn’t affect touch-screen voting machines, but most DuPage voters use optical scan paper ballots. Once the problem was discovered, Sobecki said officials decided to bring the optical scan voting machines from every polling place to Wheaton so they could go through the closing procedure. Cronin blasted that decision. “If the cards fail, you should have a system in place to respond to that,” he said. “This notion that you are going to physically transport every one of these machines from all of the polling places and have them wait in line out in the driveways of the county complex … is just stunning to me in its level of incompetence.” Sobecki said the first machines arrived around 8:45 p.m. Meanwhile, Cronin said he was getting calls from numerous campaigns wondering where their votes were. . .The commission said “rigorous” testing was done before the election, but Zay said he doesn’t believe it. “If they tested it, it would have worked,” he said. “The problem is they have their own separate board,” Zay said, referring to the three-person panel that oversees the commission. “Maybe that board needs to go.” The three members of the bipartisan DuPage Board of Election Commissioners are appointed by Cronin. Republicans hold two of the three seats. Cronin acknowledged that election commissioners should bear responsibility. “I think there is a enough blame to go around over there,” he said. “The whole operation needs to be re-examined from top to bottom as we dissolve it.”)

JEANNE IVES of Wheaton is waging just that type of fight. A key reason Ives got into the race is that Rauner signed a bill he said he would veto — which in part expands taxpayer-paid abortions to Medicaid recipients. Rauner has said Ives is too far to the right to get elected in Illinois. Ives says Rauner lied about the abortion bill and is lying about her in ads that accuse her of being linked to House Speaker MICHAEL MADIGAN, D-Chicago. She also says Rauner doesn’t deserve another term after his first one. Ives got a lot of attention by running an ad, roundly criticized, that showed actors (including a man in a dress) seen by critics as stereotypical negative views of groups including transgender people. Some newspapers have cited that ad as divisive and the reason they can’t endorse Ives. It did get attention, but also gave people pause. I think Rauner gets the nomination — but Ives could well be close. And if she even overcomes him, it won’t be a shock. . .On the GOP side, Rauner backs Urbana attorney ERIKA HAROLD, and she beats DuPage County Board member GARY GRASSO.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Chicago Republican Party has filed a complaint with Chicago Public Schools and is considering suing over an anti-gun violence student walkout Wednesday morning it calls “political” and an “indoctrination.” Chicago Public Schools CEO Janice Jackson has publicly given her approval and support for the district-wide walkout, which a Chicago GOP Chairman says has turned into an administration-organized event not a “student walkout.” Chris Cleveland, chairman of the Chicago GOP, pointed to an email sent by an elementary school principal that gave parents of young students instructions on the walkout and the option of making posters. Students across the country were holding a walkout on Wednesday to protest gun violence and to call for gun control measures on the one-month anniversary of the Parkland school shooting that left 17 people dead. The GOP chairman said the school district seemed to be coercing students to take part in the demonstrations. “It’s appalling that 10 to 14 year old kids would be coerced, by their teachers, to participate in a political demonstration,” Cleveland wrote in a statement. “A 10-year-old kid isn’t going to have an informed opinion on these political matters, and shouldn’t be expected to have the fortitude to hold a different opinion from everyone else in his or her classroom. This is political indoctrination, pure and simple.” CPS Inspector General Nicholas Schuler told Fox News the district received the complaint and is evaluating it. The Chicago Public Schools and the CEO’s office have not returned calls from Fox News seeking comment. Last year, more than 650 people were murdered in Chicago. In 2016, nearly 800 were killed, many of whom were teens, some under the age of 12. A CPS spokesperson said they could not recall a district condoned walkout for the city’s own gun violence and homicide rate.)
