From an ethical standpoint, reason isn’t only a biological function, it’s what enables moral discernment, responsibility and self-governance. Many would say our ability to have a conscience is a gift from God. Impairing this faculty through habitual drug use shrinks human dignity and weakens the moral foundation of society. The Defense Department’s SkillBridge program connects transitioning military personnel with private and public-sector organizations that offer internships and training opportunities to help them prepare for civilian careers. Service members could previously begin the program six months before leaving the service.
