But the 37-year-old Urbana, Ill., attorney and former Miss America recently had a beauty of an obstacle removed from her political path, as Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is not seeking a fifth term. “I announced my candidacy on Aug. 15 and exactly one month later, Lisa Madigan decided to drop out of the race,” Ms. Harold (who wants to become the state’s next chief law-enforcement officer) said Sunday at the Rock Island County Republicans’ annual Ronald Reagan BBQ at Pinnacle Country Club. “We’ve done very well so far.” She graduated from University of Illinois and was accepted at Harvard Law School, but it cost $175,000 for three years. Ms. Harold became Miss America in 2003 to help pay for law school, from which she graduated in 2007, debt-free. She’s been a practicing attorney ever since and has run for the 13th Congressional District seat in Illinois. “I see a state government that’s out of control,” Ms. Harold said. “I see a state government that’s not accountable to the rule of law, and I want to see an Attorney General’s office that works for the people. I want an Attorney General’s office that does not pick and choose the laws it enforces.” She wants to fight public corruption and hold lawmakers accountable. “That has not been done in the past 16 years,” Ms. Harold claimed of Ms. Madigan, whose father is longtime House Speaker Mike Madigan. “Too often that office is used in ways that benefit the politician,” she said. “It does not work on the side of the people.” Having been harassed in high school, Ms. Harold said she knows what it’s like to feel powerless. “People are fed up with what they see in government, on both sides of the aisle,” she said. “I am a committed, independent voice, willing to hold both sides accountable.” Ms. Harold also said she’s a fighter, and an unconventional GOP candidate. “I’m not the kind of person people think of when they think of the Republican Party,” she said. “I will win because I will not be out-worked.”)

Milbank said he had to report that he had not been feeling well recently. “President Trump is killing me. No, really. He’s killing me,” Milbank wrote. The WaPo writer said he has been suffering from fatigue, headaches, trouble sleeping, and chest pain. Milbank said his blood pressure was “alarmingly high” after his doctor tested it, making a point that his blood pressure has “always been normal.” Milbank said he was suffering from “Trump Hypertensive Unexplained Disorder,” a disorder he created and diagnosed himself with. “For almost five decades, I had been the picture of health, but eight months into Trump’s presidency, I was suddenly ailing,” he wrote. “Trump is the only variable, I told my doctor. ‘He sure is variable,’ my doc replied, endorsing the diagnosis.” Throughout Milbank’s piece he explained how he knows his “disorder” caused by Trump is a real thing, claiming he performed a longitudinal study to test his “hypothesis.” Milbank said he purchased a blood pressure monitor and would wrap it around his bicep throughout various parts of the daily news cycle. “I am spending the evening with friends. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Take note of conversations about policy, politics or politicians. Often, they will devolve into a smearing of sources and the news organizations that provided the information; they’re perceived as being for one ideology and against another. It would be disingenuous to suggest that there are not news organizations that have a definitive perspective when it comes to controversial topics such as these. The same might be said for journalists and pundits, too, and the public has become hip to it. In fact, when you consider how most consumers of news choose their sources of information, which often align with their own perspectives and beliefs, it’s easy to see how the lines in the sand have been drawn. Part of the daily mission for many conservative news outlets is to seed distrust among fans, making them leery of all other sources of information from “the liberal media,” including local, regional and national newspapers. Meanwhile, representing the Left, there are organizations like Media Matters for America, which spend resources on correcting or exposing misinformation perpetuated by conservative news sources. And on social media, “fake news” lives on. The public is rightfully confused and unnecessarily agitated, and newspaper brands have suffered because of it. Objectivity as a Guidepost  Perhaps the greatest misconception that the public has about journalists and the business of newsgathering is that pure objectivity is not just possible, but that it’s the whole job. What they may not realize is that sticking to “just the facts,” or merely the “who, what, when, where, and why,” makes for an interminably hollow story, like a naked skeleton. It lacks context, flavor, understanding based on research and knowledge. A “just the facts” story is both boring to read and a dereliction of a journalist’s duty to go beyond the “5 Ws,” with insight, perspectives, and things that become known during the newsgathering that should not be unknown for the sake of appearing purely objective.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans worry about vote fraud. Democrats claim that Republicans are just imagining things. But in testimony Tuesday before the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, I will suggest a simple solution that could make both parties happy: Apply the background check system for gun purchases to voting. Democrats have long lauded background checks on gun purchases as simple, accurate and in complete harmony with the Second Amendment right to own guns. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has bragged that the checks “make our communities and neighborhoods safer without in any way abridging rights or threatening a legitimate part of the American heritage.” If Democrats really believe that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System doesn’t interfere “in any way” with people’s constitutional rights to own a gun, doesn’t it follow that the same system would not constitute an infringement on people’s right to vote? This would give Republicans a system for stopping vote fraud and Democrats a system that they have already vigorously endorsed. The NICS system doesn’t just determine if potential gun buyers have criminal histories. It also checks whether a person is in this country illegally, has a nonimmigrant visa or has renounced his citizenship. Such people are not allowed to vote. The system doesn’t currently flag people who are on immigrant visas but who could be added to the system. In 34 states, felons are not able to vote immediately upon release. The background-check system would detect these too. Of course, Democrats and Republicans will continue to argue over whether illegal voting is a major problem. Since Democrats believe that the NICS doesn’t in any way interfere with or suppress gun ownership, how could it suppress legal voter registration? Thus, Democrats shouldn’t have anything to worry about. If there doesn’t turn out to be any vote fraud, Democrats can say that they were proved right.)

Smith wants to make sure more DOE employees aren’t having taxpayers foot the bill for college degrees completely unrelated to their jobs. Funding one engineer’s law degree cost taxpayers $138,000, agency auditors found in July. “The Committee is concerned this could be an indication of a more widespread occurrence of inappropriate training authorizations and expenditures within DOE,” wrote Smith, chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. “To better understand this case, and learn what steps DOE has taken to prevent a similar occurrence in the future, we request that DOE provide certain documents and information to the Committee,” Smith wrote in a letter sent to Secretary of Energy Rick Perry on Tuesday. “The Committee has questions about why Darian Ghorbi received preferential treatment during his tenure at DOE under the prior administration,” Smith further wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. DOE auditors reported in July that senior officials had allowed agency engineer Darian Ghorbi to take law classes at American University in Washington, D.C. at taxpayer expense. However, Ghorbi left DOE shortly after earning his law degree in May 2013 “for work in the private sector,” investigators found. DOE officials “had not considered the use of a continued service agreement for this employee despite the fact that he had taken extensive training at considerable cost.” What auditors found most unusual was that DOE already has policies in place to prevent this issue, but “these controls were overridden by senior management officials in the approval chain at the time.” Those senior management left no documentation of why they made their decision, and they couldn’t be interviewed by auditors “because they had left the agency,” auditors found. Ghorbi and his managers worked in DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy. President Donald Trump’s budget proposed shrinking the office 54 percent, from $618 million in 2017 to $280 million in 2018. BRAD SCHAIVE, business manager of Laborers Local 477, helped introduce Pritzker when the candidate and his running mate, state Rep. JULIANA STRATTON, D-Chicago, stopped Friday at the local’s headquarters in the capital city as part of a bus tour. While an elected official should have strength and leadership, Schaive said, “it’s hard to have any of those other qualities unless you have compassion.” Schaive recalled that his wife, MELISSA, was among eight people the Rauner administration laid off from IDOT in July. The administration said at the time there was a “lack of work” for those let go, and a spokeswoman also said the action was “cleaning up past hiring mistakes and personnel practices.” Melissa Schaive had been with the state since 2003 and made $73,860 annually as an information technology procurement analyst.
