CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Is a fair immigration compromise possible out of failed Schumer shutdown? – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-shutdown-immigration-kass-0124-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Dreamers are in limbo through no fault of their own, trapped between two cultures, with no place of their own to legally call home. Yet opinion polls show that much of the America public is sympathetic to their plight. So let the Dreamers stay. Those who are in criminal gangs or have violent criminal records have no right to be here. But the others, sure, why not? It would be quite easy to protect the Dreamers and their parents, except for the politics. Democrats want them as votes. Republicans are worried this could tip elections. So why not take the politics out of it? Here’s a possibility to consider: Let Dreamers stay — given permanent work and resident status — but not citizenship and voting rights. Conferring something as precious as citizenship upon people as a reward for their parents’ breaking the law isn’t the right way to go about this. If they want to become American citizens and vote, they’d be free to leave and attempt to re-enter the country as legal immigrants. If protecting Dreamers is the issue, then you’ll agree with me. But if weaponizing the Dreamers for the next election is your plan, then you won’t. And what about their parents, who crossed the border illegally and who worry about being deported? We can protect them, too, with some reasonable amnesty. Why not give them permanent work status, like green cards? But no welfare. Yes, you read that correctly.)

ALTON DAILY NEWS
— Illinois Lawmakers Explore Tax Workaround – Cole Lauterbach (DIERSEN: Why not just cap real estate taxes at $10,000 per home?)
http://www.altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=258980#.WmhmRIzR-M8
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rather than working to lower one of the nation’s highest property tax burdens, some Illinois lawmakers want to sidestep the federal tax reform bill by allowing for donations to government. One bill would create the Illinois Excellence Fund. It would allow taxpayers to donate and receive a tax credit for the exact amount. This shuffling of money back and forth would allow a taxpayer to deduct that amount on their federal taxes, effectively thwarting the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions put in place by the tax reform bill passed last month. The state treasurer can then use that money as he sees fit. “[The SALT deduction cap] sort of came out of nowhere,” said state Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Northbrook. “This is trying to offer a solution to give tax relief to the middle class.” The bill has a populist tone, appealing to the cries of high property taxes across the state. Nearly all of the current sponsors of the bill are likely to face a challenging re-election effort this November. Carroll said he expects the Internal Revenue Service would object to such a law. “They’re not likely to take it lying down,” he said. The IRS classifies a charitable donation as “voluntary and is made without getting, or expecting to get, anything of equal value.” Being a federal tax deduction as well, the state-bound donation would actually turn into a money maker. In addition to a 100 percent credit from the state, the donor would get up to 37 percent of that donation back in a federal write off. The bill would also allow a county to set up a similar charity, which could cause different issues. Local taxes are devised in reverse compared to state and federal taxes. A taxing district sets percentages based on a target revenue number and then properties are taxed at that percentage of the assessed value of their homes. State Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, said in an online post that the sponsors would tell counties that “they can set up a fund to accept donations to be used for undefined charitable purposes in exchange for a reduction or elimination of your property tax bill, which will either raise taxes on everybody else or destroy the budgets of every school district and taxing body in the County.”)

BREITBART
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Will Trump fall for those who argue that if Republicans give illegals citizenship, those illegals will eventually vote for Republicans? Ever-increasingly, illegals and their supporters talk and act like they are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.
http://www.breitbart.com/radio/2018/01/24/rep-roger-marshall-on-daca-recipients-these-kids-are-the-american-dream/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pollak questioned Marshall’s prediction of future voting trends among Hispanics. Americans originally from Mexico and Central America do not typically transition toward support for conservatism or the Republican Party, he said. . .Pollak challenged narratives framing DACA recipients as wholly Americanized, noting DACA-amnesty movement’s expression of hostility toward America and alignment with Mexican nationalism. “I’m again asking, for people who want to do something for DACA beneficiaries, for people who say that they’re Americans, why can’t they find a public face to this movement who at least appeals to Republicans or conservatives?” asked Pollak. “I’ve got to tell you, I was open to the idea of this DACA thing until I started covering some of these demonstrations, and you see the Mexican flag, and you see the hostility toward Republicans, the hostility toward America; and you ask yourself, ‘We’re being told these are just like other Americans, but they’re so radical, or at least they’re being led by radicals, why would we want them as fellow citizens?’ They don’t seem to be want to be part of a broader American community. They want to change that community. I mean, I think it’s a serious problem for anybody who wants to legalize 700,000 or 800,000 DACA recipients. . .Asked to address the concerns of parents whose children has been killed or murdered by illegal aliens, Marshall broadly called for more effective deportation measures to remove illegal aliens who “commit crimes.”)

PUBLIUS FORUM
— You Can’t Be Both a Liberal AND an American at the Same Time – Warner Todd Huston
http://www.publiusforum.com/2018/01/23/cant-liberal-american-time/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Liberals live in America, but they don’t love America. So, it’s not a surprise that they have an affinity for law breaking illegal aliens. After all, liberals don’t care about our laws or our sovereignty any more than transient illegals who come to the U.S. only to use it for its freebies and welfare, or to get a job to make a quick dollar to send back to their home country. These transient illegals don’t have any more interest in being an American than liberals do. So, when liberals fight for illegals, understand that they are doing so not out of love, but hate. Indeed, the modern Democrat Party is the biggest hate group in American history. Today’s liberals are all about hate. They hate democracy, they hate the Constitution, they hate white people, they hate capitalism, they hate democracy, they hate republican government, they hate religion, they hate the family structure, they hate guns, they hate history, they hate freedom of speech and liberty… in short they hate everything about the U.S.A. and you can’t love a place that you hate so thoroughly. In fact, the only thing they love about America is their assumption that they can “do whatever they want,” a concept they treat with licentiousness and wanton instead of the virtue and probity the founders hoped Americans would observe. It might seem a natural progression, this party now having drifted to its logical extremes. Born of a hate for the equality of negroes, the Democrat Party morphed into a party that hates America itself as the nation struggled with the post Civil War reconstruction era.)

— Is a Medicaid work requirement fair? – Editorial
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-edit-medicaid-rauner-work-trump-20180116-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this month, Kentucky made Medicaid history: It will now require some of its Medicaid recipients to work or risk losing benefits. Critics say this 20-hours-per-week rule is a draconian plan to toss people off the rolls. Let’s talk about that. Kentucky’s plan is flexible: Recipients could meet the requirement through volunteer work, job training, searching for a job, taking classes, or caring for someone elderly or disabled. Pregnant women, full-time students, the medically frail, the homeless and people who aren’t healthy enough to work will be exempt. . .Illinois, like almost every state, struggles to control rising Medicaid costs. You’ll remember that Obamacare not only offered a way for the uninsured to buy coverage, but also hugely expanded Medicaid beyond its traditional role of helping the neediest Americans afford health care. Illinois added hundreds of thousands of people to the rolls, many of them able-bodied adults — and Washington, not Illinois taxpayers — paid almost all of the new costs. As a result, 1 in 4 Illinoisans now is a Medicaid beneficiary.)

— Rauner’s new take on federal tax overhaul – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-chicago-riverwalk-noise-proposal-20180122-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this year, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner appeared on a Joliet radio station and said the GOP-led tax overhaul in Washington was “punishing” to the middle class for capping the deduction of state and local taxes at $10,000. But late last week, the governor unveiled a new “point of view” blog on the state website. He lauded the new federal tax law and said it means “tax relief is coming for the vast majority of Illinois families and businesses starting in 2018.” It’s the latest of shifting positions Rauner has had on Republican efforts in Washington. The governor previously declined to discuss his thoughts on changes to the tax code, saying he had “no obligation to comment on every possible policy change in Washington.” In his new blog post, Rauner said: “Members of Illinois’ middle class will keep more of their hard-earned dollars as a result of the federal tax changes.” Rauner said seven out of 10 federal tax returns in Illinois do not itemize deductions and will be able to take advantage of a doubled standard deduction and lower tax rates. He said “most families who itemize their returns will also see lower taxes,” even with the cap on state and local tax deductions and a $750,000 limit on mortgage interest for new home sales. If anything, Rauner said he sees the new federal tax law as sending “a clear message to the Illinois General Assembly: Get busy reducing state and local taxes.” Rauner has long been rebuffed in calling for freezing and making it easier for citizens to reduce local property taxes. And he’s also called for a rollback of the state income tax hike enacted last year.)

I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt when I was 32. In today’s dollars, I was earning $81,071/year when I was 25 and $91,880/year when I was 30.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hobbes cited the spiraling costs of health care, housing and education that affect his generation. He drew attention to stagnating wages, the rise of lower-quality contracting work that has replaced jobs with real benefits, the expensive real estate and cost of living required to live in the highest growth cities like San Francisco, Seattle and New York, and the right-leaning attitude toward more personal responsibility that has shifted significantly over the past two decades. In addition, Motley Fool points out that millennials are delaying life events such as marriage and home ownership because of money uncertainty. When adjusting for inflation, the average worker in the 24-36 age group earns $10,000 less than their parents’ generation did at the same age, which is roughly 20 percent less purchasing power. Many younger workers (66 percent) are contributing to an employer-sponsored retirement plan, but at lower rates than older generations, and that’s largely because of limited earnings and student debt, Motley Fool reports. The average student debt for a millennial is double that of the previous generation, Motley Fool notes. And, according to a T. Rowe Price study, nearly half of millennials expect to work at least part-time in retirement.)

— New session will bring new efforts at pension reform – Doug Finke (DIERSEN: To “reform” pensions is to a) make employees pay more for their pensions and/or b) cut employee pensions. Ever-increasingly, you are demonized, denigrated, and condemned a) if you are in line to get a pension or b) if you are getting a pension. The bigger the pension that you are in line to get or you are getting, the more that you are demonized, denigrated, and condemned as being someone who is getting something that they did not really earn and that they do not disserve. How do people react when they are demonized, denigrated, and condemned?)

http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20180121/their-view-is-civics-still-taught-in-our-schools
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: During the last national election we experienced a level of civics illiteracy — locally and nationally, across the age spectrum — that was both astounding and appalling. So glaring was it — about the most basic elements of government, from its three branches to the separation of powers to the Bill of Rights — that we wondered if civics is even being taught anymore in America’s schools. If so, those lessons were lost in Louisiana.)

Of all those immigration reforms, the loss of Chain Migration and the Visa Lottery would do the most damage to the Democrat voter import machine. (FROM THE ARTICLE: McConnell schedules early Monday vote to reopen government Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced plans for a vote at 1 a.m. Monday on a bill to fund the government through Feb. 8. The move appeared designed to force Democrats to either agree to reopen the government without concessions on immigration and other issues, or to vote again for a government shutdown, which Republicans believe will hurt Democrats. The government shut down early Saturday morning after a four-week spending bill failed to gain enough votes to advance in the Senate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Thursday, the senior and nine fellow classmates were on hand as Illinois Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti announced a new pilot program at Altamont offering such courses online. “I’ve never taken an online class before, so not being able to see the teacher and having to communicate with different methods is just different,” said Berg. “It will be more challenging since it’s a college-level class.” AP courses are important, explained Sanguinetti, because they improve college readiness and help students get into their preferred institutions. They also provide college credit upon receiving a score of 3 on a final exam.)

SUBURBAN CHICAGOLAND
— Cook County GOP Chairman calls out illegitimate actions by Chicago GOP Club leaders Cook County GOP Chairman calls out illegitimate actions by Chicago GOP Club leaders Cook County Republican Chairman Sean M. Morrison criticized actions by Chicago Republican Party leader Chris Cleveland, accusing him of usurping powers and challenging his right to represent region’s Republicans
https://suburbanchicagoland.com/2018/01/11/cook-county-gop-chairman-calls-illegitimate-actions-chicago-gop-club-leaders/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It has come to the attention of Cook County Republican Central Committee Chairman Sean M. Morrison that the Chicago Republican Party led by Mr. Chris Cleveland recently held a meeting of its club. Mr. Cleveland’s expressed intent for this meeting was to usurp the statutory authority of the Cook County Republican Party and its Chairman by illegitimately claiming the authority to appoint individuals to the position of Ward Committeeman. Chairman Morrison believes that it’s imperative to publicly clarify that the Chicago Republican Party is a private club and holds no statutory authority within the Cook County Republican Central Committee. Thus, Mr. Cleveland has no authority to make any appointments to the position of Ward Committeeman and to indicate otherwise is pure deception. “I recognize that Mr. Cleveland plays a very prominent role as Campaign Chair for the Jeanne Ives campaign for governor and he has a right to support the candidate of his choice. But, that does not mean that he can manipulate the use and influence of his role as Chairman of the Chicago Republican Club to mislead individuals into the belief that he can appoint them to the position of Ward Committeeman. His sole intent was to manufacture some sort of perceived endorsement for his candidate Jeanne Ives,” said Chairman Morrison. Mr. Cleveland’s actions are nothing more than a blatant exploitation of his club and its By-Laws and are eerily reminiscent of the actions taken by former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz when she helped rig the DNC support and primary election in favor of Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. Mr. Cleveland’s unilateral actions are an attempt to de-legitimize the vote and influence of every single Republican Committeeman in Cook County. Deputy Chairman Aaron Del Mar added, “Mr. Cleveland’s deceitful actions have raised grave concern from numerous legitimate Republican Committeemen throughout Cook County. These actions appear to indicate a level of desperation on behalf of the Jeanne Ives campaign for governor. I’m hopeful Jeanne Ives had no previous knowledge of this rigged endorsement stunt and I call on her to publicly disavow Chris Cleveland and the devious actions he took on behalf of her campaign. I would also hope that this is not an indication on how she would govern, if elected.” Chairman Morrison has asked Deputy Chairman Aaron Del Mar to make himself available for media inquiries to address this issue on behalf of the Cook County Republican Central Committee. Aaron can be contacted at: 773-718-1444 (P).)

ILLINOIS CENTER RIGHT COALITION
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: ICRC sends a bulk email to its former members and to the Illinois State Board of Elections. I should write book about those who blame me for all the problems that ICRC, TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, American Association of Political Consultants, etc. have had, are having, and will have. These same disgusting scapegoaters blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all the losses that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000.)
http://illinoiscenterrightcoalition.com/
(THE LETTER: Dear Former ICRC Member, During the November 2017, meeting of the Illinois Center Right Coalition (ICRC) an election was held to select new officers. I, James. C. Mitchell, Jr., was among the slate of new officers elected to revitalize the ICRC. I was elected to and accepted the position of ICRC Chairman with the understanding that I would guide the ICRC through a necessary reorganization process. During the reorganization process it was discovered that the ICRC was disbanded by the state of Illinois on January 11, 2013, for not filing required annual reports with the state of Illinois (see attached file). Because of this omission, the ICRC has not been able to legally conduct business since that time. All attempts to bring the organization current with Federal and state entities have run into roadblocks due to requirements that we provide financials for 2012 forward. Unfortunately, the ICRC cannot produce financials for the past year, let alone the required time period. Since the ICRC is not legally able to receive funds as an organization, nor has been since January 11, 2013, the rightful course of action is to return all funds received during this period. Unfortunately, this task is easier said than done as the ICRC was negligent in maintaining Federal and state mandated records. Additionally, the ICRC has no treasurer’s reports or financial statements of any kind indicating who funds were received from at any point during the organization’s history. Therefore, we are requesting that anyone who has provided a check to the ICRC at any point since January 11, 2012, please respond to this email with a PDF copy (front and back) of said check, or mail a copy to: ICRC, PO Box 586, Lake Villa, IL, 60046-0586. This will allow us to return your funds as well as to assist us in auditing the organization’s financial history. If by chance anyone has any historical financial reports for the ICRC, we would of course be delighted to receive copies of those as well. At this point the future of the ICRC is uncertain. The short-term plan is to refund individuals any payments received by the ICRC while it was operating illegally, and to attempt to reconstruct the organizations financial history so that the organization can be legally registered with the necessary Federal and state agencies. Thank you for your understanding and your help in rectifying this situation. Please note that all future ICRC meetings, to include the meeting scheduled on January 13, in Elgin, are cancelled until this situation has been resolved.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-considers-prioritizing-trustworthy-news-sources-in-feed-1515714244
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook FB -0.04% Inc. is broadly overhauling the way it presents news and information on its platform, as it struggles to address criticism from users and others about the quality of the content shared there and its effect on society. Under planned changes announced Thursday, Facebook will favor posts, photos and videos in the news feed that are shared and discussed among users and their friends over those posted by businesses and news organizations—a likely blow to companies that rely on Facebook to reach customers. The company also is weighing another major change that could eventually elevate media outlets deemed more trustworthy compared with publishers considered less credible, people familiar with the matter said. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday called the initial move “a major change in how we build Facebook” that would decrease how much time users spend on the platform and hurt publisher traffic, but ultimately make users happier and boost Facebook’s business. The other potential change would involve ranking news outlets based on some measures of credibility, such as public polling about news outlets, and whether readers are willing to pay for news from particular publishers, the people familiar with the matter said. Such variables would inform the Facebook algorithms that determine which publishers’ posts are pushed higher in the feed, one of the people said. Such a move would thrust Facebook into an even more active role in deciding what content is acceptable on its site—a role that makes some publishers uneasy. The company hasn’t decided whether to proceed with that shift, and it may choose not to do so. This potential change, as well as the steps outlined Thursday, illustrate Mr. Zuckerberg’s willingness to make big changes and consider ideas he previously resisted to address the growing risks looming over the company that he co-founded 14 years ago and that is now used by more than two billion people.)

According to the report, the IRS estimates that it will need $495 million in the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years to implement the new tax law, which would include “programming and systems updates, answering taxpayer phone calls, drafting and publishing new forms and publications, revising regulations and issuing other guidance, training employees on the new law and guidance, and developing the system’s capacity to verify compliance with new eligibility and documentation requirements.” “I see daily the consequences of reduced funding of the IRS and the choices made by the agency in the face of these funding constraints,” national taxpayer advocate Nina E. Olson wrote in the preface to the report.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— What questions should be asked of Republican candidates during candidate forums? – Dave Diersen
https://gopillinois.com
(THE ARTICLE: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. The first question that Republican candidates should be asked during candidate forums should be: If elected, do you promise to defend and advance all the planks in the Republican Party and Illinois Republican Party platforms including their traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, Second Amendment, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks? The second question should be: What have you done that shows that you oppose the promotion of LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, diminution of Second Amendment rights, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and age discrimination?)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Burr Ridge Board threatens lawsuit over Durkin campaign fliers – Jesse Wright
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/western-springs/news/ct-dbr-straub-durkin-campaign-tl-0111-20180109-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Burr Ridge Village Board members are threatening to sue state Rep. Jim Durkin of Western Springs for allegedly slandering the village with his political advertisements. Durkin, the Illinois House Republican leader, is running for re-election in the 8th House District and Burr Ridge Mayor Mickey Straub, also a Republican, has filed to run against him in the primary. The district includes all or portions of Burr Ridge, La Grange and Western Springs. Board member Albert Paveza said a group called Citizens for Durkin has been mailing out numerous fliers alleging the village has run unbalanced budges while driving up property taxes. The advertisements also allege the village raised fees to pay for a Chicago bailout. Paveza said he consulted with the village’s attorney, and the attorney agreed Durkin’s political ads may have crossed a line. Scott Uhler, the village’s attorney, confirmed that opinion. Paveza said he’s fielded numerous calls from constituents who have received the fliers and who were confused by the allegations. In response, Paveza drafted a letter to Durkin, Citizens for Durkin and the Illinois Republican Party demanding an apology and asking that the campaign cease “further distribution of false information.” Paveza said he expects an apology by or during the next board meeting on Jan. 22, saying if that doesn’t happen, legal action might. Durkin’s campaign did not return a call for comment on Monday. A spokesman for the Illinois Republican Party said they would comment after speaking to their attorney, who was not available Monday.)

— Jeff Bezos’ net worth tops $105 billion as Amazon climbs in New Year – Bloomberg (DIERSEN: Are/were you rich? To demonize me, to denigrate me, and to condemn me as being “rich,” my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government stressed the money that I spent on new cars, real estate, tuition, collector cars, etc. and they stressed the money that I saved. Should it be illegal to say that someone is “rich” unless their annual income is more than $250,000, $500,000, $750,000, $1,000,000? Should it be illegal to say that someone is “rich” unless their net worth is more than $5,000,000, $10,000,000, $15,000,000, $20,000,000? My federal salary in today’s dollars was $16.33/hour when I was 18, $45,703/year when I was 22, $55,905/year when I was 23, $67,638/year when I was 24, $81,071/year when I was 25, $91,880/year when I was 31, $96,403/year when I was 38, and $125,325/year when I was 49. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

— Axelrod chides Rahm: You’re not from Chicago either – Kim Janssen (DIERSEN: Where are you from? All my ancestors were Lutherans who immigrated from what is now Germany to northeast Illinois during the 1840s and 1850s. My ancestors on my father’s side lived in Chicago 1844-1854 and then in Crete ever since. I lived in Crete 1948-1972 and my brother continues to live there in a home that my grandfather had built in 1926 on land that his grandfather bought in 1864.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chicagoinc/ct-met-axelrod-emanuel-0109-chicago-inc-20180108-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “You’re not originally from Chicago,” Emanuel said by way of introduction to Axelrod, who was raised in New York. “But then, neither are you,” responded Axelrod. Ooh, burn! “Hey that’s getting close, buddy,” a laughing Emanuel, who grew up in Wilmette, chided Axelrod. Both men come from families that fled Europe to escape anti-Semitism, and they bonded in their chat over their shared Jewish faith.)
— Report ranks software developer as the best job in the U.S. this year – Corilyn Shropshire (DIERSEN: Are/were any of your jobs bad? According to my current critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes, all the jobs that I had were bad and they would never stoop to take any of them. I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997.)

— If Google’s workplace is biased, what about its algorithms? – Leonid Bershidsky (DIERSEN: Who blacklists who? Members of Group A blacklist members of Group B. Members of Group A are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors and members of Group B are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German Americans, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-google-bias-discrimination-algorithms-0110-20180109-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Culture of blacklisting The real complaint, of course, is about that. Google’s prevailing culture appears to be hostile to right-wing political views. As one manager wrote on an internal bulletin board (the screenshot is used in the lawsuit), “If you express a dunderheaded opinion about religion, about politics, or about ‘social justice,’ it turns out I am allowed to think you’re a halfwit” and refuse to work with such a person on a project. “As evidenced by the fact that the blacklisting posts remain live on Google’s internal corporate network, it is clear that Google took no action to prevent blacklisting,” Damore and Gudeman wrote in the lawsuit. “Google seems to ignore most cases, and occasionally ‘coach’ the worst offenders. However, Google will not openly come out against the practice; instead, it relies on crowdsourced harassment and ‘pecking’ to enforce social norms (including politics) that it feels it cannot write directly into its policies.” Gudeman claims his open support for Donald Trump directly contributed to his being blacklisted and fired. There’s a reason, however, that Damore and Gudeman need to bring race and gender into their accusations. Companies are not legally obliged to maintain a diversity of views among their employees. Opinions, unlike race, gender or sexual orientation, can be treated as a lifestyle choice, and these work better with some corporate cultures than with others. For example, Nike might prefer a workout fanatic to a smoker, while a tobacco company would be comfortable making the opposite choice. It can be argued that, because of the talent pool from which it draws — smart millennials who tend to value tolerance over the freedom of expression — Google builds a more cohesive working environment by hiring, to quote from the lawsuit, “an employee who sexually identifies as ‘a yellow-scaled wingless dragonkin’ and ‘an expansive ornate building’” than a #MAGA cap wearer. That, however, is exactly the problem. Google is not just a company, it’s the owner of the world’s biggest conduit to information, with a 69 percent global search market share. It leads people to it by using proprietary algorithms and artificial intelligence. And it’s acutely aware of the problem of algorithm bias. There’s a Google-produced video about it: “YouTube: Machine Learning and Human Bias.”)

CHICAGO MAGAZINE
— Chicago Is Now Better Educated Than Its Suburbs A flood of college graduates has made Chicago one of the best-educated cities in America, but an unequal one as well. – WHET MOSER (DIERSEN: I spent lots of my personal time and my personal money taking job-related courses while I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997.  However, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction. To keep their jobs and to get promoted, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government focused on getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970 when I was 21, an MBA from Loyola in 1976, a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.)

— Retirement crisis: 37% of Gen X say they won’t be able to afford to retire – Adam Shell
https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2018/01/10/retirement-crisis-37-gen-x-say-they-wont-able-afford-retire/1016739001/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Add Gen Xers to the long list of Americans who fear they won’t have a sizable enough nest egg to retire. Nearly four out of 10 (37%) of Generation X — those born between 1965 and the late 1970s — say they would like to stop working for good and “fully retire” someday, “but will not be able to afford to,” a new survey from TD Ameritrade, an online broker based in Omaha, found. Other gloomy Gen X retirement findings: 43% say “they are behind” in their savings. Half (49%) are “worried about running out of money” once they leave the workforce. Nearly two out of 10 (17%) say they “aren’t saving or investing for anything.” Only a third expect to be “very secure” in retirement — vs. nearly half of Baby Boomers. The savings shortfall has been exacerbated by the phasing out of traditional pensions funded by employers. In their place is the increasing reliance on 401(k) plans and IRAs that require workers to do most of the saving on their own.)

GAO
— Tackling the Tax Gap (DIERSEN: While my Democrat GAO superiors wasted my knowledge of IRS that I gaining by working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, they did let me work on audits of IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division for 3 years.)
https://blog.gao.gov/2018/01/09/tackling-the-tax-gap/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tax season is upon us, and many of us will soon be sitting down to figure out and pay our share. But this year, like every year, some taxpayers intentionally or inadvertently won’t fully pay what they owe. The difference between the amount that taxpayers owe and what they actually pay is known as the tax gap, and it’s hundreds of billions of dollars each year. Today’s WatchBlog discusses some of our recent reports on the tax gap, and what IRS might do to address it. How big is it? In 2016, the Internal Revenue Service estimated an average gap of $458 billion each year from 2008 to 2010. IRS expects eventually to collect part of this, but the rest—$406 billion per year for those years—will never be collected. That’s more than it costs to fund 10 of the largest federal agencies for a year. It’s more than 20 times what it costs to fund NASA for a year.)

– New tax law is hitting these 4 states hard – ROBERT C. POZEN
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/new-tax-law-is-hitting-these-4-states-hard-2018-01-10
(FROM THE ARTICLE: These large increases in state revenues are not feasible, as illustrated by Illinois. To cope with its mammoth unfunded benefit obligations, Illinois has sharply raised tax rates on both individuals and businesses over the past few years. But higher tax rates in Illinois have backfired — driving local residents and firms to other states. In 2015, for example, Illinois lost $4.75 billion in adjusted gross income to other states, according to IRS data.)

— Jeff Bezos Is Now Worth More Than Bill Gates Ever Was – BLOOMBERG (DIERSEN: Are/were you rich?

Amazon shares have risen 6.6% this year, with a report showing the Seattle-based company captured 89% of online spending among dominant holiday retailers in the five-week period beginning the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. The latest jump has pushed Bezos’s fortune definitively above the high reached by Microsoft Corp.’s Bill Gates in 1999. The Amazon founder passed Gates in October with a net worth of $93.8 billion and his fortune crossed $100 billion for the first time a month later when the holiday shopping season kicked off on Black Friday.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner calls Republican federal tax overhaul ‘punishing’ to Illinois – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: Did Rauner prepay his real estate taxes? One could argue that those who are being punished by the federal tax overhaul are homeowners, and especially homeowners who pay more than $10,000 a year in real estate tax and state income tax. One could argue that homeowners who are being punished the most are homeowners who took the trouble to prepay their real estate taxes.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-congress-taxes-20180104-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Late last month, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner gave his take on the Republican D.C. tax overhaul, saying he wished it “did more for the middle class” but praising its corporate tax cuts as “more supportive of businesses.” On Wednesday, though, Rauner called the new federal tax law “punishing,” criticizing a $10,000 cap on deducting state and local taxes. “That’s going to hurt a lot of middle-class families and higher income families and it’s going to push more employers out of the state. That’s going to hurt job creation and that’s going to increase the cost of living for the people of Illinois,” Rauner said in an interview with WJOL 1340-AM in Joliet. The governor also repeated his belief that the state and local tax deduction limit could give a boost to his call for freezing property taxes and rolling back a state income tax hike. “It’s punishing in that regard,” Rauner said of the tax limitation. “That’s why it’s so critical that we get the reforms done that I’ve been advocating.” Rauner said in the interview that he was in Joliet on Wednesday, but the governor’s office listed no events on his public schedule. He has not been out in public since the week before Christmas.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-facebook-technology-personal-relationships-mental-health-0104-20180103-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook’s recent acknowledgment that social media may be making its users feel bad in some cases is a significant milestone. So far, the technology industry hardly has talked about the downsides of their products. Now a realization seems to be setting in that perhaps something has gone wrong along the way. Academic research that Facebook cited in a corporate blog post in December documented that when people spend a lot of time passively consuming information they feel worse. For example, reading Facebook posts for even 10 minutes can put people in a bad mood, and clicking or liking too many links and posts can have a negative effect on mental health. Some researchers also believe that reading rosy stories about others leads to negative comparisons about one’s life and that being online too much reduces in-person socializing. Social media may well be making many of us unhappy, jealous and anti-social.)

However, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction. http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180103/elgin-mayor-blasts-councilman-for-spending-6000-to-attend-harvard-program
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The mayor of Elgin blasted a councilman’s decision to attend a program offered by Harvard University that cost the city $6,015. Councilman Rich Dunne took part in June in the program on senior executives in state and local government by the John F. Kennedy School of Government, which cost $5,700 — plus $315 for airfare — according to information obtained by the Daily Herald. Dunne said he took vacation from his job. “Being a former training manager, I believe in it. I believe in career development and executive development,” he said. Mayor David Kaptain said the city should pay for only employees to attend such programs, not council members. Dunne received approval from City Manager Rick Kozal.” I was pretty upset with Rick and the whole thing at the time, but the horse had already left the barn, so to speak,” Kaptain said. Police Chief Jeff Swoboda participated in the program in 2016, and former City Manager Sean Stegall attended when he was assistant city manager in 2008. “It’s a long-term investment (to pay for employees),” Kaptain said. “It’s not to help somebody’s political career.” Dunne’s tuition came at a 55 percent discount because he’d been placed on a waiting list and was offered a spot three days before the start of the program. The city paid $12,400 tuition for Swoboda, who also was paid his regular city salary. Dunne put Kozal “in a bad spot,” Kaptain said, by making a last-minute request and saying Stegall had promised him he could go in 2017. Kozal didn’t respond to a request for comment. Dunne said the mayor never told him he had any objections.)

In his book Kingdoms in Conflict, Chuck Colson writes about the failure of the church to oppose the extermination of Jews and the government usurpation of control of the church in Nazi Germany. Immediately following the naming of Hitler as Chancellor of Germany, the persecution of the church began in earnest. In response, a resistance movement sprang up headed by Martin Niemoller and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Initially, they had the support of the dominant Protestant group, the German Evangelical Church, but as the persecution increased, so did the cowardice and concomitant rationalization of cowardice on the parts of most church leaders. In Germany only a remnant, who came to call themselves the Confessing Church, remained standing courageously in the gap for truth.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In his 90-minute State of the State speech, Mr. Cuomo said the state would challenge the new Republican-led federal tax plan in court — earning a standing ovation from the crowd — and asked the Legislature to restructure the state’s tax code by adding a statewide payroll tax and to counter the effects of the so-called carried interest loophole. The governor’s office suggested that it was reviewing eliminating the state income tax, whose deductibility was capped by the new federal tax bill, likely in favor of a payroll tax, which is deductible, an idea also being floated in other states. Precise details on the plan were scant, and such a plan would face an uphill battle, with Republicans generally opposing new taxes and some conservative economists already voicing concerns on Wednesday.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you’re under 35, here’s how your peers are really doing, according to the Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Consumer Finances: The median income for families with a head of household under 35 was $40,500 in 2016. Nearly half of families under 35 had credit card balances, with median debt of $1,400 per family. About 42 percent of families under 35 had retirement accounts, and their median value was $12,300. Lastly, about 45 percent of families with a head of household under 35 had education debt. The median amount was $18,500 per family, but the amount varies widely by income level and highest degree attained. . .Do you have an emergency fund of at least $500? It should eventually include three to six months of basic expenses. Are you paying down high-interest debt, like credit cards and personal loans? That should come before attacking lower-interest debt like student loans. Do you spend less than you earn? A budget based on the 50/30/20 rule can help: You’ll spend no more than 50 percent of after-tax income on necessities, no more than 30 percent on wants and at least 20 percent on savings and debt repayment. Do you follow the 28/36 rule? Lenders use this to qualify you for a mortgage, but Amis suggests it’s also a helpful way to assess cash flow even if you’re years from buying a home. Housing costs should be less than 28 percent of your pretax income. With other debt payments, like credit card, car or student loan bills, the total should come under 36 percent of pretax income. Do you save for retirement? Socking away 10 to 15 percent of your pretax income is the goal. These guidelines are aspirational. But your progress toward them is a better measure of whether your money is working for you than surveys or Instagram. In the end, your financial well-being boils down to whether you can meet your basic needs today, plan for a better tomorrow and enjoy life as you go.)

— 4 Reasons Your Social Security Benefit May Be Worth Less Than You Think – Christy Bieber
https://www.fool.com/retirement/2017/12/30/4-reasons-your-social-security-benefit-may-be-wort.aspx
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 2. Social Security benefits aren’t keeping pace with rising costs of living Retirees receiving Social Security benefits get periodic cost of living adjustments (COLAs). COLAs are tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Unfortunately, many believe this is the wrong index to tie benefit increases to because it does not accurately reflect seniors’ spending patterns. Seniors often devote more of their income to medical costs than the general population. Unfortunately, in 33 out of the past 35 years, healthcare costs have risen at faster rates than Social Security COLA increases. Food and housing cost increases are also outpacing COLA for retirees on Social Security. If Social Security benefits don’t rise as much as the costs of products and services used by seniors, the latter have less purchasing power. Even if income appears to go up because you receive a small raise, benefits will actually be worth less in real terms. And, unfortunately, there’s not even a guarantee you’ll get a raise — even on paper. Since 2010, COLAs have averaged just 1.35% per year. In three of the past 10 years, seniors didn’t get a raise at all, and in 2016, the COLA was just 0.3%.)

— FRONT PAGE: Strategist Christopher Robling touted volunteer work for College of DuPage while chairwoman secretly paid his son’s tuition to Georgetown – Stacy St. Clair and Christy Gutowski
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/cod/ct-met-college-of-dupage-consultant-20171204-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When former College of DuPage board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton ordered the school to hire her political strategist as a special assistant to the president, she and the strategist repeatedly described him as a volunteer and promised he would donate his salary to charity. But here’s what they didn’t disclose: He was getting money all along. Newly filed court documents show Hamilton was secretly paying the college tuition of strategist Christopher Robling’s son while Robling was employed at the state’s largest community college — payment that experts say may run counter to the state’s ethics and election laws. The private payment became public as part of Hamilton’s divorce case in DuPage County, where she and her estranged husband, John, have been battling over a $45 million estate for more than a year, according to court records. The divorce case explains Hamilton’s departure from the college’s board of trustees for “personal reasons” just months after she became its chairwoman, and it also contains allegations she used marital assets to, among other things, help pay for Robling’s son to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The exact amount wasn’t included in the court documents, but sources say she paid Georgetown about $20,000 between June 2015 and November 2015. During that six-month period Robling served as special assistant to then-college President Joseph Collins, earning and then donating roughly the same amount that Hamilton paid to Georgetown. This wasn’t an unusual arrangement for the Hamiltons, their divorce case shows. The couple paid one year of American University tuition for John Hamilton’s assistant’s daughter, according to records. Robling, who owns a strategic communications firm and serves as a political commentator on local television and radio, acknowledged the money paid to Georgetown during a recent deposition. “I am an alum of Georgetown and he happens to attend Georgetown and I’m very proud of that,” Robling said in the deposition. In portions of the deposition filed as part of the divorce case, Robling declined to say whether he paid taxes on the tuition paid to Georgetown or whether it was considered a gift. Though John Hamilton refers to Robling as his wife’s “paramour” in court filings, Robling declined to answer questions about his personal relationship with Kathy Hamilton during his deposition. Attorney Aldo Botti, who represents both Kathy Hamilton and Robling in the divorce proceedings, says the allegation is false and meant to embarrass Kathy Hamilton. Both Hamilton and Robling declined interview requests through Botti. “She’s a woman of integrity who’s going through a very difficult divorce and who is seeking her fair share of the marital estate,” Botti said. “She’s been through a lot.” One day after the Tribune asked Botti about Hamilton’s tuition arrangement with Robling, Hamilton petitioned the court to seal her divorce file. DuPage County Judge Neal Cerne refused the request, siding with the Tribune after it intervened and asked that the case remain open for public viewing. The divorce proceeding is scheduled to go to trial Wednesday. Before Robling worked for COD, Hamilton personally paid him $2,500 a month between August 2014 and June 2015 for crisis management and to protect her political image, according to Robling’s deposition.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/gov-rauner-wages-war-on-wbez/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner on Tuesday accused Chicago public radio station WBEZ of discontinuing an “Ask the Governor” segment with him because “it’s really more of a Democrat station” — a charge the station is adamantly denying. The remarks were made during a Chicago Tribune editorial board meeting. Columnist Eric Zorn tweeted that the governor complained to the board that WBEZ discontinued the segment for political reasons. “Some of the powers that be didn’t want me goin’ on there, it’s really more of a Democrat station,” the governor said, per Zorn’s tweet. That accusation didn’t gel well for the public radio station, which offers extensive local and national political coverage. “WBEZ and Governor Rauner’s team agreed that the ‘Ask the Governor’ segment would have a limited run and end by Labor Day, as it would not be fair to gubernatorial candidates of all parties to allow the governor an hour of airtime each month during the election campaign,” Goli Sheikholeslami, WBEZ’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “WBEZ is committed to providing voters with fair coverage of all candidates, and we look forward to having Governor Rauner join us for our upcoming GOP primary candidate forum in 2018.”)
