UNION BULLETIN
— Political web-sites must be clearly marked Unfortunately, a troubling trend has surfaced in which political websites are designed to look like news sites to fool voters. – Editorial (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, mainstream news sources promotes the Democrat Party platform, Libertarian Party platform, Green Party platform, and foreign countries. Of course, they falsely deny it. GOPUSA ILLINOIS promotes the Republican Party platform and America.)
http://www.union-bulletin.com/opinion/editorials/political-web-sites-must-be-clearly-marked/article_bce204a4-8c41-11e8-9003-1352a6c3665d.html

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: When it comes to internet shenanigans at election time, the Russians don’t have the market cornered. A few members of the U.S. Congress — Democrats and Republicans — have set up “fake news” websites designed to sway voters in their direction so they can win re-election. Not cool. Tim Johnson of the McClatchy News Service reported that three sitting senators who are in the midst of tough re-election campaigns and one House member have created sites that look like internet news pages, but their aim is to put positive spin on the candidates. For example, Nevada Republican Sen. Deal Heller’s website, NevadaSenateUpdates.com, even has weather and calendar widgets on the top of its page, just like those of a conventional newspaper website. The “paid for by Heller for Senate” is in dim gray type on a black bar at the bottom, Johnson reported. On the other side of the aisle is a the faux internet news site put up by the Missouri Democratic Party — The Missouri Download — to promote the re-election chances of Sen. Claire McCaskill. Johnson reports that its declaimer is almost impossible to read. According to election watchdog groups, these are not isolated incidents, but a troubling trend. “These websites are designed with one thing in mind: to trick the reader into thinking they’re a legitimate news source. And anyone who says otherwise is being disingenuous. A label tucked at the bottom of a web page isn’t enough,” said Aaron Sharockman, executive director of PolitiFact, a fact-checking website. Brendan Fischer, of the Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan group on campaign finance and democracy issues, agreed. “You’d have to scroll all the way to the bottom and read the fine print to learn that these sites are actually generated by partisan political actors who are trying to win an election,” Fischer said, adding that structure of the websites indicates that “there is a degree of trust in the news media, and that’s why these candidates and parties are trying to emulate traditional news media sites.” While these campaign websites aren’t illegal, as the source and campaign information are included (albeit it in teeny-tiny print), there are certainly deceitful. All voters — Democrats, Republicans and independents — should be irked. Voters deserve better. Those in office, or seeking office, should want to get information out to the public that is positive to their campaigns and that costs doubts on their opponents. But this must be done in the open. When creating websites for these political purposes, make it crystal clear — in bright, big and bold letters — who is responsible for the content. Then the voters can judge for themselves the credibility. If the public doesn’t push back now on this dubious tactic, the proliferation will continue. It must stop.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Ballot security battle heats up already hot Roskam-Casten House race – Alexandra Arriaga
https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/ballot-security-election-hacking-battle-heats-roskam-casten-house-race/
— Democrats try to rebuild the state party from the ground up – Rich Miller (DIERSEN: He who pays the piper calls the tunes. How much money has your Republican county and township/ward party organizations received this year from the Illinois Republican Party, that is, from Bruce Rauner?)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/illinois-democrats-blue-wave-rebuild-party/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But last week, the county organization received a $5,000 check from the Rock Island County Democratic Party. Warren is one of 14 counties that received a total of more than $200,000 from the Rock Island Dems last week. Warren’s check tied with Effingham County’s for being the smallest. The Kankakee County Democrats received about $28,000. Kane County’s Dems received about $20,000. Williamson County got about $14,000. The Metro East’s Madison County Democrats have so far received the largest check in this initial round: $45,495. The Carroll County Democrats have raised an average of about $3,000 a year for the past 18 years, but they received $7,523.50 last week. As I’ve told you before, the Rock Island Democratic Party Chairman is Doug House, who also runs the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association. Because state campaign finance laws allow unlimited contributions between county-level party organizations, the J.B. Pritzker campaign gave House’s Rock Island Democrats $1 million earlier this year as the first installment on its “Blue Wave Illinois 2018” program. . .Several county parties, particularly Downstate, have few actual precinct committeepersons. In Chicago and suburban Cook, precinct captains are appointed by local township and ward committeemen. They don’t have to live in the precincts assigned to them. Everywhere else, committeepersons are elected in their precincts — and it’s not easy convincing people to run for that office, particularly in overwhelmingly Republican areas. However, those county chairs can fill vacancies, and the appointed committeepersons don’t have to live in the precincts they represent, so a big push is on to get counties to a minimum level of 75 percent coverage. Some local party officials have also been told that the million-dollar contribution from Pritzker is just the first round. More party-building money is coming. By contrast, as of last week Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign had given a total of about $33,000 divided between nine county and township Republican organizations since the March primary. The Illinois Republican Party chipped in another $25,000 during the same time period for a handful of county organizations. J.B. Pritzker’s campaign has contributed $5.7 million to various Democratic groups and candidates since the primary, including big bucks to several suburban and Chicago political organizations. Pritzker’s campaign gave the St. Clair County Democrats $200,000 during the primary and it paid off big. Pritzker won St. Clair with 76 percent of the vote.)

One could argue that in 1997 when I was 49 years old, it took only $51,864/year in today’s dollars to get me to leave my GAO job that paid $125,325/year in today’s dollars. $51,864/year is my Civil Service Retirement System pension.)

— Chicago Police Department relaxes hiring rules regarding past marijuana use – Fran Spielman (DIERSEN: One of the reasons why many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government is that they cannot pass a physical examination. Other reasons include a) the pay and benefits are terrible, b) the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) they cannot pass an employment examination, e) they cannot pass a background investigation, f) they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or g) they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against the aforesaid.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: World Relief is one of nine organizations contracted by the U.S. State Department to resettle refugees. But the Trump administration has capped refugee admissions to 45,000 for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 — the lowest figure since the Refugee Act of 1980. Advocates expect the actual number to reach roughly half that based on State Department statistics. World Relief’s suburban offices have resettled a combined 133 refugees through June. By contrast, those offices welcomed 652 refugees in fiscal 2016. More than 40 percent of this year’s refugees are from Myanmar; others are from Bhutan and Ukraine.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— If you are a conservative Republican, what discourages you from helping elect Republican candidates? For me, it is the candidate’s failure/refusal to defend/advance a) the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform and/or b) the illegal drugs, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving), and the rest of the planks in the Republican Party platform. For me, it is the candidate’s failure/refusal to oppose the promotion of dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, diminishment of Second Amendment rights, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. In Illinois, the more actions that “Republican” activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. take against the IRP platform, the more that they shout that they are really Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, or RINOs. To get votes from Democrats, from Libertarians, and from Greens, “Republican” candidates who run as RINOs, that is, who run as anti-Republicans, want Republicans to oppose them. Which candidates on the November 6, 2018 ballot in your precinct are you going to help elect? Which of those candidates really do not want you to help elect them? — Overpromising has crippled public pensions. A 50-state survey – Ted Dabrowski and John Klingner (DIERSEN: QUESTION: Why do employers in the public sector give their employees more generous pensions than employers in the private sector give their employees? Consequently, to get and retain employees, public sector employers have had to give their employees more generous pensions.)

http://www.wirepoints.com/dear-trustee-jones-and-similar-wirepoints-critics-name-calling-and-censorship-wont-protect-you-from-numbers-and-facts-quicktake/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Kimberly Jones is a trustee of Maine Township, Illinois. Because her comment about us at Wirepoints, made at an open board meeting, is pretty representative of what we hear from those who don’t like us, let me respond, to her and her kind. At a township board meeting last month, she said, ”Wirepoints is not a legitimate newspaper and is a political propaganda paper, not something that should be brought up in a governmental body.” (1:14 mark.) She was responding to a particular Wirepoints article from February by my colleague Ted Dabrowski highlighting how much taxes had increased and how little private sector incomes had risen in the township. Her “argument” is really just a variation of “arguments” all too common. They’re usually comprised of little more than ad hominems and some way to muzzle us is often the hope. Ms. Jones, you can start by going through our article to see that all our data came from credible, official sources. Which ones were wrong? What evidence do you have to the contrary? We spend extraordinary amounts of time trying to get our facts and numbers right. We use original sources and link to them whenever possible. We routinely publish opinions and analyses we don’t agree with. Our work has been cited approvingly in Barron’s, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes and many other publications. If we get something wrong we correct it, though I’m proud to say we’ve published nothing with a material error I know of in the five years we’ve been around, despite the complexity of what we cover. As for us being political, all of us at Wirepoints forego any campaign activity and political support, but if being fiscal realists is political, so be it. We wear that on our sleeves. We make no effort to hide our contempt for politicians, both Democrats and Republicans like you, who stand against reforms needed to restore Illinois and its municipalities to financial stability. Above all else, we believe in freedom of expression and the marketplace of ideas, especially in government forums like your board meeting at which you think our research should be suppressed. So, to you and others who offer nothing beyond name-calling, put up or shut up. And as for any call for us to be banned from township meetings or anywhere else, drop dead.)

WASHINGTON TIMES
— Trump’s strategic war on the media – Jennifer Harper
https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jul/19/inside-the-beltway-trumps-strategic-war-on-the-med/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Voters already know that President Trump has confronted a hostile news media, which has produced an unprecedented amount of negative coverage aimed at his campaign, presidency and administration for three years. The practice ultimately may backfire on the press; Americans dislike the media almost as much as the media dislikes Mr. Trump. Almost. Meanwhile, the president continues to maintain an adequate arsenal of ways to counter his journalistic foe. Mr. Trump has a fearless staff. He has a productive relationship with a handful of very powerful news organizations which support him. He bypasses the mainstream media with tactical tweets and social media outreach, issued at all hours. Most importantly, perhaps, Mr. Trump is an irresistible newsmaker and a hands-on master at creating a nimble counternarrative; he both infuriates and fascinates those journalists who attack him, squawk at one another — then race to craft a story. This has been going on since that pivotal moment when Mr. Trump announced his intention to run for president on June 16, 2015. “Politicians are all talk and no action. They will not bring us, believe me, to the promised land,” he told the crowd. But wait, there’s more. Mr. Trump also continues to issue his own substantial public opinion polls, as he has done since his campaign. The latest version is a collection of 27 questions, described by Mr. Trump in the public outreach as a “Mainstream Media Accountability Survey to show the media that the American people are fed up with the Fake News Machine.” He is succinct. Among the questions: “Do you believe the media disdains conservatives?”; “Do you believe the media fails to report on Democrats’ scandals?”; Do you believe that the media purposely tries to divide Republicans in order to help elect Democrats?”; “Do you believe that the Republican Party should spend more time and resources holding the mainstream media accountable?”)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— (State pensions are) Doomed A new study shows that benefits are rising faster than GDP in most states. – Editorial
https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-your-pension-is-doomed-1532042985
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pension costs are soaring across the country, and government unions blame politicians for “under-funding” benefits. Lo, if only taxes were higher, state budgets would be peachy. The real problem, as a new study shows, is that politicians have promised over-generous benefits. In a novel analysis, the Illinois-based policy outfit Wirepoints compared the growth of state pension liabilities relative to state GDP and fund assets. Most studies have examined “unfunded” pension liabilities, which is the difference between current assets and the present value of owed benefits. But this obfuscates the excessive pension promises that politicians have made.)

To get my Post Office job in 1966, I passed the Post Office’s employment test in 1966, applied for a job in 1966, earned a high school diploma in 1966, and met the job’s many other requirements. To get my IRS job in 1971, I passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination in 1970, applied for a job in 1970, earned a job-related bachelor’s degree in 1970, and met the job’s many other requirements. To get my GAO job in 1980, I earned a job-related master’s degree in 1976, passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, applied for a job in 1979, suffered a $19,203/year (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO, and met the job’s many other requirements. GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. Since it was delivered July 9, she has been driving the Mustang almost nonstop. She zooms down Jeddah’s palm-lined avenues. often with the top down despite sweltering heat, giving rides to various groups of her 16 grandchildren. “I love this car because of its roar,” said Ms. Nasief. “Everybody is staring at me because I’m a woman in a sports car. — More than 100 civil and human rights groups call on Senate to reject Kavanaugh – LYDIA WHEELER (DIERSEN: Democrats use Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to get rid of Republicans, and especially Republicans who are religious, conservative, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/397532-more-than-100-civil-and-human-rights-groups-call-on-senate-to-reject
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a Tuesday letter, led by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the groups say Kavanaugh will be a fifth and decisive vote to undermine a host of core rights and legal protections, including economic security and access to healthcare, abortion, voting and labor rights. The groups, which include the NAACP, Lamba Legal and Demand Justice, also the rights of immigrants and persons with disabilities, LGBTQ equality, equal opportunity, affirmative action and environmental protections all could be endangered by Kavanaugh joining the high court.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2018/07/15/facebook-infowars-what-you-need-know/786388002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook is under pressure to explain why Infowars, a site known for promoting conspiracy theories, doesn’t get booted off the social network as it cracks down on fabricated news. After it admitted pages – including those run by Russian operatives – had scammed the social network with made-up news and video during the 2016 presidential election, Facebook forced through a series of changes designed to prevent a repeat, such as letting users flag content they think is false and then having third-party fact checkers examine the post. At the same time, lambasted by conservatives for what they say is a liberal bias, Facebook maintains it won’t make the editorial decisions itself.)

— Is Congress expanding its knowledge to meet oversight demands? – Chase Gunter (DIERSEN: GAO’s claim of being nonpartisan was a major reason why I agreed to suffer a $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old. But I soon learned that GAO, and especially its Chicago office, is extremely partisan.)
https://fcw.com/articles/2018/07/17/congress-tech-knowledge-base.aspx
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Kosar also noted that the staffs of nonpartisan congressional assistance entities, such as the Congressional Research Service and the Government Accountability Office, have seen their staff size decrease. And in the technology arena, that knowledge gap is even more glaring. Congress once had the Office of Technology Assessment, an internal congressional think tank that produced reports on technical matters for lawmakers, but it was shuttered in the 1990s to cut costs. Earlier this year, lawmakers attempted to revive OTA, which peaked at a budget of $20 million and a size of 140 staffers, but the bid failed on a mostly party-line vote in the House.)

And those who don’t go to college face a bleak future. Americans with no more than a high school diploma have fallen so far behind college graduates that the earnings gap between college grads and everyone else has reached its widest point on record, CBS News reported last year. Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have spent far more money on “immediate pleasures” than my wife and I have.)

Unlike with traditional IRAs, you don’t get a tax deduction for your contribution to a Roth IRA. But all the money in the account, including gains, can be withdrawn tax-free at retirement. If only you had jumped in to a Roth IRA at the beginning, you would have a small tax-free fortune today. . .Now, the only question is where you will find the money to invest over the next 20 years. In hindsight, you can certainly see the opportunities that you missed in the past. Was that vacation worth the high pricetag, or would it have been better to invest in a Roth IRA? That closet of outdated clothes? The handbag that you simply had to have? All consumed your future.)

GAO, I would have presented a jury with many examples in which GAO paid its female employees who had less job-related work experience than I had, less job-related education than I had, fewer or no professional certifications, and/or no professional licenses higher salaries than GAO paid me. I worked for IRS 1971-1980 and for GAO 1980-1997. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180715/employers-are-finally-ready-to-talk-about-how-much-they-pay
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Until recently, none of the 170 employees working at Verve, a marketing company, knew what anyone else made. Now, everyone’s salary is listed on an internal document for everyone to see. By 2019, all 1,100 employees at CareHere, a Nashville based health-care company, will know the pay ranges for all positions in the company. Fog Creek, a New York-based software company with about three dozen employees, did the same last year. As did Hired, an online job search network in San Francisco that employs 200 people. Employers have long discouraged talking about money at work, in part because obscuring salary information keeps compensation costs down. But that attitude is starting to change. In a survey of almost 2,000 employers by the consulting firm Willis Towers Watson, more than half of the respondents said they plan to increase transparency around pay decisions in the next year. Pay transparency can mean a lot of things. A minority of companies are taking the most extreme approach, where everyone knows what everyone else makes. A larger share of companies are letting employees in on the voodoo behind their pay practices and explaining what goes into compensation decisions. Others are revealing pay ranges for positions and posting that information alongside job listings.)

You can have a woman or minority from a wealthy family, attending the best schools in the country, yet they are still considered a discriminated party.” Or you can be politically well-connected. Kim Morreale is married to state Rep. Michael McAuliffe, Chicago’s only Republican representative. Instead, proposals were vetted and ranked by a committee of tollway executives and an engineering professor, according to the Daily Herald report. — Downgrading retirees to meet ratings quotas can lead to problems – Karla L. Miller (DIERSEN: In 1989, to help GAO get rid of its employees who were Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who had not made GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40, the Democrats who ran GAO instituted their pay-for-performance (PFP) system. Of course, to get rid of me, they always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for PFP purposes.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Reader: At the end of every year, my company conducts management reviews, assigning a rating of 1 (unacceptable) to 5 (outstanding) to everyone who was an employee during the year, whether or not they’re still at the company. The performance rating system requires a fixed distribution of workers – a certain percentage at each level every year. While finding workers deserving a “1” rating was relatively easy at first, over time it became a problem to assign “unacceptable” to workers who are perfectly acceptable. To meet the fixed distribution goal, management’s solution has been to assign “1” to workers who retired during the year, regardless of their performance. The retirees won’t see the “1” rating, but they also won’t receive the prorated annual bonus they would otherwise receive for the time they worked in their last year. This seems unethical. What do you think?)

In today’s dollars, my GAO salary was $125,325/year, but my Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension is $73,461/year less than that, or only $51,864/year. My CSRS pension is only 41% of my GAO salary in today’s dollars.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The western Chicago suburb of Forest Park became the fifth Illinois community since early last year to suffer a multi-level rating cut from Moody’s Investors Service with pension strains cited a key factor. Moody’s (MCO) dropped the village just west of Chicago three levels to Baa1 from A1. The downgrade earlier this month affects about $7.2 million of outstanding debt. The outlook remains negative. The downgrade “is based on the village’s weakened reserve position, structurally imbalanced operations and a high and growing pension burden.” The village of about 14,000 residents has limited ability to raise local revenues and is dependent on uncertain state revenue sources. In its favor is a growing tax base and modest debt burden. “The negative outlook reflects ongoing operating deficits,” Moody’s (MCO) said. “The village’s pension contributions are also very weak relative to plan funding, pointing to further growth in its unfunded liabilities.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The move comes just days after reports surfaced that the company employed a member of a white supremacist organization who participated in a violent rally in Charlottesville last summer. The employee, identified as Michael Miselis by ProPublica and “Frontline,” no longer is employed by the company. But Northrop was slow to respond to the allegations, and the news organizations also reported that he had remained employed even after his superiors had been informed of his actions. In an email to company employees at the time, Bush said that Northrop “would take the appropriate actions to make sure that our foundation remains strong well into the future.” Asked whether the Miselis’ alleged affiliation with a white supremacist group played a role in Bush’s decision to resign, Northrop’s Paynter said “absolutely not.”)

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/california-city-basic-income-500-cash-handouts/2018/07/10/id/870887/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A city in California that was once plagued with mortgage foreclosures will soon begin distributing $500 per month to 100 of its residents for an 18-month universal basic income program. Situated less than 100 miles east of the wealthy Silicon Valley, Stockton’s median household income is $49,271 — lower than the national average of $57,617. The basic income experiment is slated to begin in 2019.)

INDEPENDENT JOURNAL REVIEW
— Left-Wing Judge Eliminates Work Requirements for Welfare Programs – ANDREW FORCIER (DIERSEN: Of course, my critics/opponents paint my Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension and my Social Security as being welfare. They would love it if they could require me to work to continue to get my CSRS pension and my Social Security. They would stress my being able to put GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and send them out every day as proof that I am able-bodied. What type of work would they want me to do? Would it be appropriate for someone with my work experience, education, professional certifications, and professional license?)
https://ijr.com/2018/07/1108510-judge-eliminates-medicaid-work-requirement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One of the most commonly agreed-upon approaches to welfare programs is to require an able-bodied person to work when they can, or at least put forth the effort to demonstrate they are in pursuit of gainful employment. Twenty years ago, the idea was so universally accepted that even then-President Bill Clinton signed off on legislation adding an element of personal responsibility to welfare programs. He even had campaigned in 1992 to “end welfare as we have come to know it.” Such requirements have, of late, been a staple of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and even a majority of Democrats can agree that those who are able to work should have to in order to receive benefits.)

CNBC
— Here’s how much Supreme Court justices get paid – Yoni Blumberg
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/10/how-much-supreme-court-justices-get-paid.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court on Monday. If confirmed, Kavanaugh, 53, will become one of the most powerful and influential people in government for what could be decades, and he’ll lock in a healthy six-figure salary, too. Kavanaugh currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where judges make $220,600 a year, according to the U.S. Courts website. Associate justices on the Supreme Court make $255,300, while the Chief Justice, currently John Roberts, makes $267,000. These salaries usually increase by $2,000-$3,000 each year. A seat on the court comes with some desirable benefits. Federal judges have the option to enroll in insurance plans through the Federal Employee Health Benefits system, whose website claims it offers “the widest selection of health plans in the country.” And justices can look forward to a generous retirement package. If they retire at 70 after serving 10 years, or at 65 after serving 15 years, they qualify for an annual pension equal to their highest full salary. There is also a summer break when court isn’t in session between July and October. It’s not exactly a vacation, as justices use the summer to prepare for cases scheduled for the fall, but it is when they do most of their traveling, much of which is subsidized, and when they lecture and teach for extra pay. Former justice Antonin Scalia reported going on 28 separate trips to lecture and teach in 2013, and Clarence Thomas earned more than $27,000 in 2015 for lectures at Brigham Young University, Creighton University and George Washington University. Justices have other streams of income, too. Stephen Breyer, for example, reported $45,000 in royalties in 2016 from his book, “The Court and the World,” while Sonia Sotomayor has earned millions for her 2013 memoir, “My Beloved World.” And, of course, some justices invest. When the Supreme Court took a patent case involving Cisco in 2015, Breyer had to sit out because he owns up to $100,000 in Cisco stock. At least six, and perhaps all, of the sitting Supreme Court justices are millionaires, the Center for Public Integrity found after analyzing 2016 financial disclosures. With an estimated net worth just over $6 million, Breyer is the wealthiest justice, with the possible exception of Gorsuch, since when the report was published Gorsuch had yet to disclose his finances for that year. His 2015 disclosure, however, indicated he was worth between $3.1 million and $7.2 million, the Center reported. Kavanaugh claimed to have up to $65,000 in assets, which doesn’t necessarily include items such as cars or mortgages, in a recent financial filing, as well $27,500 in non-investment income on top of his salary, reports Money. The house he shares with his wife and two daughters is valued at $1 million.)

WASHINGTON POST
— Seven Americans on patriotism, protest and the president – Jenna Johnson (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes remain furious that because sought and obtained student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971, I got almost 3 years of full-time Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) credit when I paid CSRS in the 1990s 7% of the salary that I had earned 1966-1969 working part-time for the Park Forest Post Office. That meant that I got both Social Security credit and CSRS credit for those almost 3 years. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Standing in the crowd was Jane Pettinger, a 57-year-old college professor holding a cardboard sign decorated with two flags and the words “TRUE PATRIOT.” “Serving your country rather than deferring the draft or being a draft dodger — that’s patriotism,” said Pettinger, who was in the U.S. Air Force for 7½ years and is critical of Trump for requesting draft deferments during the Vietnam War. “Standing up for democracy, making America actually what it stands for again — that’s democracy, that’s patriotism. Supporting a guy who simply wants to tear us down — that is not pro-USA, that is not patriotism.”)

https://businessrecord.com/Content/Opinion/Opinion/Article/Guest-Opinion-How-to-run-a-positive-political-campaign/168/963/83117
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What’s negative? Launching personal attacks on your opponent. That practice should have been left behind in junior high (or as it’s now called, middle school). Defining your opponent with derogatory labels and slogans. They are not informative and they insult the voters’ intelligence and sensibilities. Demonizing your opponent. This practice only demeans the one doing it. Taking words and phrases out of context and twisting their meanings. This practice should be beneath the dignity of honest candidates and parties. Manipulating your opponent’s visual image is a similar form of deceit.)
