CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Candidates claim Speaker Madigan trying ‘to buy control’ of next Aurora mayor – Steve Lord  (DIERSEN: Of course, needless-to-say, Democrats want your next mayor to promote dependency on government, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, race and gender based preference giving, political affiliation discrimination, age discrimination, pot, booze, gambling, and other vices, abolition of the Second Amendment, and even worse things.  Of course, needless-to-say, Democrats want your next mayor to focus on getting rid of those who are Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, and those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

— Think carefully before tapping retirement funds for college – Jill Schlesinger  (DIERSEN: When you were young, did your parents have a retirement fund?  My outstanding parents did not.  My father fought type 1 diabetes from age 14, was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma, never attended college, worked in the office of a chemical plant, worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills, did not buy a new car until he was 45 years old in 1967 and it was a bottom of the line Chevy with almost no options.  My mother never attended high school and was a homemaker.)

DAILY HERALD
— KERRY LESTER: Breuder requests docs  Lawyers for ousted College of DuPage President Robert Breuder have served four former trustees with demands for all of their emails and other communications about Breuder’s contract and performance, court files show. Also among items Breuder wants from former board Chair Kathy Hamilton, current Chair Deanne Mazzochi and trustees Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein: All documents and communications referring to Breuder’s October 2015 termination or the hiring of Alix Partners to conduct a financial audit of the College of DuPage. Of course, because the trustees are being sued in both their official capacities and as individuals, it will be interesting to see what private emails surface as the case continues.

The official response, says a source at the top of Rauner’s campaign operation, is no one. “We have lots of friends interested,” he said. Among those interested in the job are Republicans state Rep. David Harris of Arlington Heights, state Rep. Tom Morrison of Palatine, Rolling Meadows Mayor Tom Rooney, Palatine Township Supervisor Sharon Langlotz-Johnson, Palatine Committeeman Aaron Del Mar and Arlington Heights Trustee Joe Farwell. Republican committeemen from Palatine, Wheeling, Elk Grove, Maine and Barrington townships will meet in mid-September to select a replacement.)

NEW YORK POST
— American journalism is collapsing before our eyes – Michael Goodwin
http://nypost.com/2016/08/21/american-journalism-is-collapsing-before-our-eyes/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump may or may not fix his campaign, and Hillary Clinton may or may not become the first female president. But something else happening before our eyes is almost as important: the complete collapse of American journalism as we know it. The frenzy to bury Trump is not limited to the Clinton campaign and the Obama White House. They are working hand-in-hand with what was considered the cream of the nation’s news organizations. The shameful display of naked partisanship by the elite media is unlike anything seen in modern America. The largest broadcast networks — CBS, NBC and ABC — and major newspapers like The New York Times and Washington Post have jettisoned all pretense of fair play. Their fierce determination to keep Trump out of the Oval Office has no precedent. Indeed, no foreign enemy, no terror group, no native criminal gang, suffers the daily beating that Trump does. The mad mullahs of Iran, who call America the Great Satan and vow to wipe Israel off the map, are treated gently by comparison. By torching its remaining credibility in service of Clinton, the mainstream media’s reputations will likely never recover, nor will the standards. No future producer, editor, reporter or anchor can be expected to meet a test of fairness when that standard has been trashed in such willful and blatant fashion. Liberal bias in journalism is often baked into the cake. The traditional ethos of comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable leads to demands that government solve every problem. Favoring big government, then, becomes routine among most journalists, especially young ones. I know because I was one of them. I started at the Times while the Vietnam War and civil-rights movement raged, and was full of certainty about right and wrong. My editors were, too, though in a different way. Our boss of bosses, the legendary Abe Rosenthal, knew his reporters leaned left, so he leaned right to “keep the paper straight.” That meant the Times, except for the opinion pages, was scrubbed free of reporters’ political views, an edict that was enforced by giving the opinion and news operations separate editors. The church-and-state structure was one reason the Times was considered the flagship of journalism. Those days are gone. The Times now is so out of the closet as a Clinton shill that it is giving itself permission to violate any semblance of evenhandedness in its news pages as well as its opinion pages. A recent article by its media reporter, Jim Rutenberg, whom I know and like, began this way: “If you’re a working journalist and you believe that Donald J. Trump is a demagogue playing to the nation’s worst racist and nationalistic tendencies, that he cozies up to anti-American dictators and that he would be dangerous with control of the United States nuclear codes, how the heck are you supposed to cover him?” Whoa, Nellie. The clear assumption is that many reporters see Trump that way, and it is noteworthy that no similar question is raised about Clinton, whose scandals are deserving only of “scrutiny.” Rutenberg approvingly cites a leftist journalist who calls one candidate “normal” and the other “abnormal.” Clinton is hardly “normal” to the 68 percent of Americans who find her dishonest and untrustworthy, though apparently not a single one of those people writes for the Times. Statistically, that makes the Times “abnormal.” Also, you don’t need to be a detective to hear echoes in that first paragraph of Clinton speeches and ads, including those featured prominently on the Times’ Web site. In effect, the paper has seamlessly adopted Clinton’s view as its own, then tries to justify its coverage. It’s an impossible task, and Rutenberg fails because he must. Any reporter who agrees with Clinton about Trump has no business covering either candidate. It’s pure bias, which the Times fancies itself an expert in detecting in others, but is blissfully tolerant of its own. And with the top political editor quoted in the story as approving the one-sided coverage as necessary and deserving, the prejudice is now official policy. It’s a historic mistake and a complete break with the paper’s own traditions. Instead of dropping its standards, the Times should bend over backwards to enforce them, even while acknowledging that Trump is a rare breed. That’s the whole point of standards — they are designed to guide decisions not just in easy cases, but in all cases, to preserve trust. The Times, of course, is not alone in becoming unhinged over Trump, but that’s also the point. It used to be unique because of its adherence to fairness. Now its only standard is a double standard, one that it proudly confesses. Shame would be more appropriate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Customers who buy Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers do so because they want modern evocations of 1960s performance icons, not because they need them, says Karl Brauer, senior director of insights for Kelley Blue Book. And that could be a problem. “You have the canaries in the coal mine — cars that are more discretionary rather than functional purchases, and cars that you see starting to decline first” when the market starts to plateau or dip, he says. “We’re seeing that in two areas — luxury brands are struggling more, and so are these performance cars.” Indeed, luxury car sales have fallen 13 percent year to date in a total market that’s up 1.1 percent.)

Under the expired contract, taxpayers cover nearly $15,000 per AFSCME worker in annual health care costs, though workers themselves pay just $4,452 toward their own coverage. Meanwhile, private-sector workers have seen rate increases of up to 49 percent in the Illinois health care exchange in 2016 alone.)

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2016/08/18/mike-pence-releases-financial-disclosure-report/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence on Thursday night released a financial disclosure form that appears to show a negative net worth outside of a state pension—the starkest possible contrast from the top of the GOP ticket. While presidential nominee Donald Trump has boasted at length on the size of his financial disclosure statement and his personal net worth, Mr. Pence’s federally mandated disclosure shows the picture of financial simplicity. He reports no significant savings accounts, mutual funds or 401(k) accounts from before he entered elected office. Mr. Pence, who is 57 years old, earned a six-figure congressional salary from 2001 to 2013. Before being elected to the House, Mr. Pence was a talk-radio host in Indiana. His disclosure states he is paid $173,860 as Indiana’s governor. “Our family has been honored to serve our state and nation,” Mr. Pence said in a statement released by the Trump campaign. “Like many American families, we have been fortunate and blessed to raise three wonderful children and put them through college while doing work that we love.” The Trump campaign said Mr. Pence “will release his tax returns in the near future.” Mr. Trump has said he will not release his tax returns because he says he is under an audit from the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Trump’s attorney, Michael Cohen, said on CNN on Wednesday that he will not allow Mr. Trump to make his tax returns public until the audit is completed. On the form, Mr. Pence listed as assets a defined-benefit Indiana pension worth up to $1 million and up to $30,000 in other state retirement accounts. He has at most $45,000 in cash and college savings accounts and at least $95,000 in student loans taken out for his three children. He doesn’t list any holdings in stocks, mutual funds or rental property. Those totals don’t include the value of any real estate that he doesn’t rent out. And it doesn’t include any federal pension or defined-contribution retirement plan he has from his time in the U.S. House of Representatives. Those assets aren’t required to be listed on the form, which is designed to reveal conflicts of interest, not net worth.)

http://abc7chicago.com/politics/senate-race-between-kirk-duckworth-heats-up/1477047/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The race for the United States Senate seat in Illinois is heating up as Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth unleashed new political attacks on incumbent Mark Kirk. Kirk was in Republican stronghold DuPage County Friday as he tries to unify the party behind what has become his maverick reelection campaign. After Sen. Kirk addressed the Naperville Chamber of Commerce, media members were asked to leave the room during the question and answer session. Later, Kirk explained the stroke he survived in 2012 makes question and answer sessions difficult. “That’s just a Kirk thing. I’ll take the hit for that. Ok,” Kirk said. The senator, whose bus tour took him to Republican Day in Springfield this week, reaffirmed his decision to vote for someone than his own party’s presidential nominee Donald Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton. He is also one of only three Republican senators to support a confirmation hearing for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. Kirk said his self-described independent, fiscally conservative, socially moderate politics are needed now more than ever. “With such bad choices between Clinton and Trump, who we decide should be our senator is all the more important now,” Kirk said.)

SUBURBAN LIFE
— Efforts to restore McKee House continue  Limestone building near Glen Ellyn was built in 1936 – ERIC SCHELKOPF
http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/2016/08/18/efforts-to-restore-mckee-house-continue/a7hm441/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bobbi Wheatley believes that the 80-year-old McKee House needs to be preserved.  “I think it is a very historically relevant building,” the Glen Ellyn resident said. “It’s part of the historical corridor along St. Charles Road.” Wheatley attended a meeting on Aug. 18 organized by the McKee Preservation Group, which is commitment to restoring and giving an adaptive reuse to the limestone building. The house was constructed in 1936 for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. The building is located on the Glen Ellyn-Lombard border in Churchill Woods and has been vacant since 2002. Forest Preserve District staff members have recommended the building be razed because of the high cost to repair it. The McKee Preservation Group is circulating a petition against the demolition of the building. The petition states the house should be preserved for its “historic, architectural, cultural and aesthetic importance.” “The [Forest Preserve] commissioners need to be better stewards of the property they own, or they will get booted out,” Wheatley said. Wheatley signed the group’s petition as well as others attending the meeting, including Glen Ellyn resident Karen Parkinson, who also thinks the McKee House should be preserved and reused. “I feel there are a lot of uses for it,” Parkinson said. “I think the ambiance of the location would enhance the event.” Forest Preserve District of DuPage County commissioner Tim Whelan wants to build support – and funds – for preserving the McKee House. Whelan said he would like to garner $10 donations from 5,000 people – totaling $50,000 – which would be used toward the building’s preservation. “I feel like my board will speak to me if there is a groundswell of support, along with funds,” he has said. McKee Preservation Group member Andrew Van Gorp said he would like to see the McKee House used as a bicycle way station to serve the bike trails in the area. The meeting was held in the Glen Ellyn Park District’s Lake Ellyn Boathouse, which was built in 1937 as a Works Progress Administration project and was recently restored. In July, Glen Ellyn Park District Board of Commissioners President Jay Kinzler wrote a letter to Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore stating that while the Park District is not in a position to contribute capital funding towards repairs and restoration of the McKee House, “we certainly value historic assets and believe the McKee House is worthy of saving if at all possible.” In the letter, Kinzler said the Park District would consider using the McKee House for programming opportunities if it was preserved. Glen Ellyn Park Board Commissioner Kathy Cornell said that one of the possible uses for the building could be as an outdoor learning lab. “It is a terrific setting,” Cornell said. Glen Ellyn Historic Preservation Commissioner John Schreiber also expressed a desire to save the building and reuse it. “The beauty of the building is special,”Schreiber said. “It was designed to blend with the natural environment around it…It is all handcrafted. Our goal is to make this building whole and open to the public for public use.” More information about the McKee Preservation Group is at its Facebook page at @SavetheMcKeeHouse.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If the company’s goal is to rid itself of its long-term employees, it’s not stopping there. Buyouts are the first step in a larger workplace purge and unfailingly precede targeted firings. Even if company makes their buyout quota, any employee that meets its criteria remains a target for dismissal. So, if you qualify for a buyout that is offered by your company, you may want to consider taking it, according to financial adviser Roger Wohlner. It’s probably the best offer you’re going to get. “If your company has identified you as somebody who might be a good candidate for a buyout offer this generally means you are on their list,” writes Wohlner. “I’ve invariably seen folks who have turned down the first offer finding themselves out of a job within a year or so.”)

— Wheaton developing guidelines for honorary street names – Bob Goldsborough
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/wheaton/news/ct-wheaton-honorary-street-names-20160817-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mayor Mike Gresk proposed adding another requirement to the guidelines: that the honorees be deceased. He referred to disgraced former U.S. House Speaker and Wheaton College alumnus J. Dennis Hastert, who admitted earlier this year that he had molested boys decades earlier while a high school wrestling coach and who currently is in prison for related crimes involving structuring bank withdrawals and making false statements to federal investigators. In 2007, Wheaton College named its center for economics, government and public policy after Hastert, only to strip his name from the center last year after he was indicted. “I’ve always worried in the back of my brain that somebody goes off the reservation on you,” Gresk said. “There are myriad examples of that. In this very town, on a certain college campus, where the (Hastert) name came down in about 40 seconds (after he was indicted). I’m always dubious when I see … centers and baseball fields named after living people.” Councilwoman Suzanne Fitch echoed Gresk’s concerns, saying that “I think it becomes less political if it just applies to deceased individuals.”)

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/17/business/when-the-captain-is-mom-accommodating-new-motherhood-at-30000-feet.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Boarding a flight can feel like stepping into a time capsule — men typically fly the plane, while most flight attendants are still women. Which is why a female pilot from Delta Air Lines did something dramatic at a union meeting recently. Standing before her male colleagues, the captain unbuttoned her uniform, strapped a breast pump over the white undershirt she wore underneath, and began to demonstrate the apparatus. As the machine made its typical “chug, chug, chug” noise, attendees squirmed in their seats, looked at their feet and shuffled papers. It was the latest episode in what has proved to be a difficult workplace issue to solve: how to accommodate commercial airline pilots who are balancing new motherhood. It is a question that some employers have answered by creating leave policies or lactation rooms. But the flight deck of a jumbo jet isn’t a typical workplace. Pilots are exempt from a provision in the Affordable Care Act requiring employers to accommodate new mothers. At 30,000 feet, the issue touches not only on pilot privacy, but also aircraft safety. At Delta, a group of women pilots have banded together through a private Facebook page and have approached their union with formal proposals for paid maternity leave — unheard-of at the major airlines — because they say they would like to stay home to breast-feed their babies. At Frontier Airlines, four female pilots are suing the company for discrimination, seeking the option of temporary assignments on the ground while pregnant or nursing. While their proposals differ, all say they aim for one thing: to avoid situations in which pilots have been leaving the cockpit in midflight for as long as 20 minutes, the amount of time often required to pump breast milk.)

GAO hired me because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job.  IRS hired me because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  The Post Office hired me because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  Additional reasons why I was greeted with cold shoulders was that many of my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates disapproved of one of more of my demographics – draft dodger, conservative, baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, 100% German national origin, ancestors have been in America since the 1840s, White, male, older, non-poor, gun owner, etc.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: But Davis’ refusal to step away from his party and the Trump campaign is troubling. Davis can’t really believe that after nearly two years of a campaign that features name-calling and temper tantrums that Trump is going to change his ways in the next 100 days. By supporting Trump, even timidly, Davis is putting himself on the same side as the candidate the referred to Mexican immigrants as “rapists,” believes Muslim should be banned from entering the country and thinks it’s appropriate to criticize the mother and father of a son who made the ultimate sacrifice. We’ve often thought of Davis as a reasonable representative, but this decision calls that belief into question.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump Saturday threatened to revoke the credentials of The New York Times after the newspaper published a report detailing the “failing” effort by Republican Party operatives to “save Mr. Trump from himself.” “The newspaper’s going to hell,” Trump told a rally at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. “They’ve got a couple of reporters in that newspaper who are so bad — I mean lack of talent. But it’s going to hell. “So, I think maybe what we’ll do, maybe we’ll start thinking about taking their press credentials away from them,” the Republican nominee added, drawing cheers from the crowd. “Maybe we’ll do that. I think so. I think so. “When they write dishonest stories, we should be a little bit tough, don’t we agree?” Many in the audience yelled “yeah.” The Times report, by Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman, detailed efforts by staffers to keep Trump on script, focus more on policy and tone down his inflammatory rhetoric and combative style. It was based on interviews with 20 Republicans, many of whom insisted on anonymity to avoid clashing with him,” according to the Times. The article also described a meeting Trump had with GOP political consultant Karl Rove and casino magnate Steve Wynn during primaries — from which Rove emerged “stunned” that the nominee knew little about campaign basics. Trump slammed the Times for using anonymous sources, saying “I don’t think they have any names.” In an overall attack on the press, Trump that it was his biggest competitor in this campaign, not Hillary Clinton. “I’m not running against crooked Hillary,” he said. “I’m running against the crooked media. “That’s what I’m running against, I’m not running against crooked Hillary.” Trump has revoked the press credentials of several media outlets, including Politico, The Washington Post and The Huffington Post. “I’m no fan of the Washington Post, although they have been much nicer lately, I must say,” Trump said Saturday. “Maybe I’ll let them back in. they’ve been much better.” He also ripped CNN for its coverage of him saying that President Barack Obama was the “founder” of the Islamic State — a remark he later said was sarcastic, “but not that sarcastic.” “CNN is so disgusting,” Trump said. “Their ratings are going down big league. “You know why? Because I refuse to be interviewed. And I get high ratings, what can I say? “These people are so dishonest.” He later praised an article from The New York Post, which detailed his contributions as a developer to New York City. Trump slammed the Times report on Twitter:)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/08/14/what-makes-marijuana-users-different-from-everyone-else/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A massive study published this month in the Journal of Drug Issues found that the proportion of marijuana users who smoke daily has rapidly grown, and that many of those frequent users are poor and lack a high-school diploma. Examining a decade of federal surveys of drug use conducted between 2002 and 2013, study authors Steven Davenport and Jonathan Caulkins paint one of the clearest pictures yet of the demographics of current marijuana use in the U.S.  They found that the profile of marijuana users is much closer to cigarette smokers than alcohol drinkers, and that a handful of users consume much of the marijuana used in the U.S. “In the early 1990s only one in nine past-month [marijuana] users reported using daily or near-daily,” Davenport and Caulkins write. “Now it is fully one in three. Daily or near-daily users now account for over two-thirds of self-reported days of use (68%).” These usage patterns are similar to what’s seen among tobacco users. “What’s going on here is that over the last 20 years marijuana went from being used like alcohol to being used more like tobacco, in the sense of lots of people using it every day,” Caulkins said in an email. Adults with less than a high school education accounted for 19 percent of all marijuana use in 2012 and 2013 (compared to 13 percent of the total adult population), according to the survey. This is similar to their 20 percent share of all cigarette use, but considerably higher than their 8 percent share of all alcohol use. Similarly, Americans of all ages with a household income of less than $20,000 accounted for 29 percent of all marijuana use and 27 percent of all cigarette use, compared to only 13 percent of all alcohol use and 19 percent of the total adult population. The concentration of use among poorer households means that many marijuana users are spending a high proportion of their income on their marijuana habit. Users who spend fully one quarter of their income on weed account for 15 percent of all marijuana use. One interesting finding is that over the past 10 years as many states have liberalized their marijuana policies, marijuana arrests are down while marijuana purchases are up. This means that the risk of getting arrested for marijuana use has fallen sharply since 2002. That year, there was one marijuana arrest for every 550 marijuana purchases, according to Davenport and Caulkins. By 2013, there was one marijuana arrest for every 1,090 purchases. “The criminal risk per marijuana transaction has fallen by half,” they conclude. Much of that risk is still born by non-white marijuana users. Davenport and Caulkins stress that since the study was conducted over a period preceding the opening of recreational marijuana markets in Colorado and Washington, it doesn’t offer any evidence on the merits or lack thereof of legalization. “Our results can in no way be interpreted as evidence toward the successes or failures of marijuana legalization or even medical marijuana laws,” they write. However, they say their research presents a number of things to consider as states like California, Arizona and Maine vote on marijuana legalization this fall. “Most people who have used marijuana in the past year are in full control of their use, and are generally happy with that use,” Caulkins said in an email. But, “consumption is highly concentrated among the smaller number of daily & near-daily users, and they tend to be less educated, less affluent, and less in control of their use.” The median marijuana user, in other words, may be someone who indulges periodically but generally doesn’t consume a lot of it. However, most of the marijuana consumed in the U.S. isn’t consumed by the median marijuana user, but rather by the very heavy users who smoke daily or more. “There is a sharp contrast between what policy is best for the typical user versus what is best for the people who consume most of the marijuana,” Caulkins said. Legalization may not change much in the life of the typical marijuana user. But heavy users who overindulge may find it even easier to do so when marijuana is legal and cheaper to buy. The findings support the argument for legalization measures to be accompanied by public health protections — like treatment programs and public awareness campaigns educating people about the risks of overuse.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are many demographic fault lines emerging in this year’s presidential campaign, but few are deeper than the division among likely voters based on educational attainment. Those with the least number of years of education are far more likely to support Donald Trump, while those who have had the most schooling are much more likely to back Hillary Clinton, according to a Bloomberg Politics national poll released this week. “The presence or absence of a college degree is more predictive of the vote in this election than we’ve seen in past elections,” said pollster J. http://www.wnd.com/2016/08/warning-issued-over-computer-hacks-that-can-injure-motorists/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A team of privacy experts is urging a California appeals court to resurrect a case spotlighting the hacking of computers in cars, warning breaches could result not only in stolen identity but physical injury. “‘Connected vehicles’ expose American drivers to the risks of data breach, auto theft, and physical injury,” the Electronic Privacy Information Center asserted in a friend-of-the-court brief to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They, and others, are asking that a lawsuit out of San Francisco be restored. The case, Helene Cahen v. Toyota, focuses on the electronic monitoring and Internet connectivity built into cars. A trial judge dismissed the case for lack of standing, but the brief contends the ruling should be reversed. And it’s no longer just about privacy, it’s about public safety, too, the brief argues. “The internal computer systems for these vehicles are subject to hacking, unbounded data collection, and broad-scale cyber attack,” the brief explains. “Despite this extraordinary risk, car manufacturers are expanding the reach of networked vehicles that enable third party access to driver data and vehicle operational systems. “The plaintiffs in this case seek the opportunity to present legal claims stemming from the defendants’ sale of vehicles that place them at risk. That should be allowed to proceed.” WND reported a year ago when two U.S. senators proposed the SPY Car Act of 2015 to create privacy standards for computer systems that control today’s generation of electronics-heavy vehicles. The proposal came just as a Wired.com contributor reported hackers who set him up in a new vehicle were able to take over its controls while he was driving at 70 mph. “As the two hackers remotely toyed with the air-conditioning, radio and windshield wipers, I mentally congratulated myself on my courage under pressure,” wrote Andy Greenberg at Wired in an article headlined “Hackers remotely kill a Jeep on the highway.” In the 2015 article, he reported, suddenly his vehicle slowed to a crawl, an 18-wheeler =approached from behind and “the experiment had ceased to be fun,” he wrote. Privacy advocates have warned since 2011 about in-car tracking and other computer devices. Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center wrote then that data from embedded “black boxes” in vehicles could provide unwanted information to state agencies. Later, the systems were upgraded, connecting vehicles to the Internet. Greenberg explained that the industry’s Uconnect is prompting questions. It’s an Internet-connected computer feature in hundreds of thousands of Fiat Chrysler cars, SUVs and trucks that controls the vehicles’ entertainment and navigation, enables phone calls and provides a Wi-Fi hot spot. Greenberg noted the cell connection also “lets anyone who knows the car’s IP address gain access from anywhere in the country.” The hackers with whom he was working, he said, have “only tested their full set of physical hacks, including targeting transmission and braking systems, on a Jeep Cherokee, though they believe that most of their attacks could be tweaked to work on any Chrysler vehicle with the vulnerable Uconnect head unit.” EPIC already has written extensively about the “Internet of Things,” explaining how various technologies communicate with each other through systems such as IPv6, RFID, Wi-Fi and GPS in appliances, smartphones, wearable computers and other devices. “The ubiquity of connected devices would enable [the] collection of data about sensitive behavior patterns, which could be used in unauthorized ways or by unauthorized individuals,” EPIC said. With “340 trillion” Internet Protocol addresses available, there’s no problem with assigning each vehicle one, the article explained. The new brief argues that some of these issues need to be adjudicated so that American consumers know what they’re getting into. In dismissing the case, the court “underestimated the substantial risk to public safety of connected cars and misconstrued the plaintiffs’ invasion of privacy claim. Whether or not the court ultimately agrees with the allegations presented, they are clearly sufficient to establish Article III standing,” the brief argues. Additionally, the “court’s conclusion is also wrong because it fundamentally misunderstands the security vulnerabilities created by connected cars,” EPIC writes. “Cars today are dependent on extraordinarily complex onboard computer systems. According to the Government Accountability Office, the typical modern high-end car contains over 100 million lines of code – substantially more than a Boeing 787 passenger airline[r], which contains 6.5 million lines of code, or an F-22 U.S. Air Force jet fighter, which contains 1.7 million lines. … As these vehicles have become more complex, the potential for software errors and related vulnerabilities correspondingly rise.” However, the brief notes, “car manufacturers have failed to take adequate steps to address these vulnerabilities.” Since first appearing in the 1970s, “electronic control units” in cars “have grown in complexity, replacing or controlling many mechanical functions. The typical modern vehicle now relies on computerization for almost everything from ‘engine management to steering, braking, climate control, navigation, [and] infotainment,’” the brief says. By now, everything, “engine management system, brake controller, airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, door locks, gauge cluster, sound system, seat controls, communications systems and telematics units are all interconnected.” In short, that means “window switches have a potential path of communication to the brake controller, the entertainment system has a channel to communicate through to the vehicle’s airbags, and so on.” There also is no “authentication” system, “allowing anyone with access to the system, authorized or not, to control vehicle components,” it explains, with access available through Bluetooth or GPS. As a result, millions of cars on the road ‘are vulnerable and pose a serious security risk to their occupants and to others.” The warning followed: “Wide-scale malicious automobile hacking is no longer theoretical. The lower court failed to appreciate the nature and immediacy of the problem when it concluded that the threat is ‘speculative.’ Although a full-scale remote car hijacking is certainly a serious risk to car owners and others …. Hijacking is not the only risk… Connected cars leave consumers open to car theft, data theft, and other forms of attack as well. These attacks are not speculative; many customers have already suffered due to vulnerable car systems.” Ransomware attacks and electronic disabling are just a few of the problems that already have been reported.“Connected vehicles raise significant public safety concerns that the courts cannot ignore. One company has already recalled 1.4 million vehicles because of the risk of remote hacking,” the brief says. And some 20 states regulate the collection and use of driver data. “But wide scale malicious automobile hacking is certainly imminent, if not already occurring,” EPIC says. Earlier this year, WND columnist Craige McMillan warned: “Let’s face it: Hacking these vehicles isn’t a possibility; it’s a certainty. It might be a kid spoofing you, trying to make you crash. Maybe a gang that’s going to reprogram your destination and part out both you and your vehicle. Heck, they could even operate from overseas via your onboard Internet. “Professional criminal gangs already orchestrate crashes on freeways and busy streets to bilk insurance companies; why wouldn’t they turn to hacking as well? A skilled team of such experts could probably hack you right up into a semi tractor trailer, bolt the door and take you and the vehicle anywhere they wanted.” His concern was for the fully computerized, self-driving vehicles. “Somehow, self-driving cars just don’t seem very well thought out to me. The penalty for not thinking this out before we do it is going to be very large, indeed.”)

— Clinton goes negative with Trump – Niall Stanage  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who claim to be Republican, but who have worked harder against me than they have ever worked against any Democrat, against any Libertarian, or against any Green. From what I see, they are really Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, or RINOs.  They are moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means. They are disciples of Saull Alinsky. They are involved in government and/or politics to make money for themselves, to promote LGBTQ activity, to promote abortion, to promote mass/illegal immigration, to promote race and gender based preference giving, to promote age discrimination, to promote pot, booze, and other vices, to abolish the First and Second Amendments, to get rid of those who do not give them money, to get rid of those who refuse to serve as one of their operatives/dupes, to get rid of those who have sued them, etc.  Increasingly, the aforesaid, their operatives, and their dupes treat the Wheaton Bowl Banquet Hall as being one of their “safe places.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many blue-collar white Americans are upset at the state of this country. Our society and economy has rapidly changed over the past few decades, and they’ve watched their way of life crumble. Their jobs are gone and they can no longer afford to send their kids to college. At the same time, their “silent majority” is disappearing as the American populous rapidly becomes more diverse, and the people who were once disenfranchised minorities are granted a leg up. The men who bought into the American Dream are now frustrated that the social contract they felt entitled too has been broken and that they have been forgotten. And in the midst of this anger, they’ve latched onto someone they feel can make it all right again: Donald J. Trump)
