CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Legalize pot, but don’t allow it everywhere – Tyler Cowen, Professor of Economics, George Mason University (DIERSEN: If you promote pot, you promote destruction. If the destruction-promoting Democrats legalize pot for recreational use in Illinois, at a minimum, municipalities should be allowed to ban the sale of pot in their jurisdictions, like they can ban video gambling. If you agree with me, please urge the leaders of your municipality and potential candidates for leadership positions in your municipality to pledge to ban the sale of pot in your municipality. I will lead the effort to ban the sale of pot in Wheaton like I led the efforts to ban video gambling in Wheaton in 2009 and to get Comcast to carry Fox News Channel in Wheaton in 2002. If you live in Wheaton, please contact me ASAP about urging City of Wheaton officials and potential candidates for leadership positions in Wheaton to pledge to ban the sale of pot in Wheaton.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— The charges made in Winchester v. Illinois Republican Party (IRP) are extremely serious. Constructively, Winchester has charged the IRP with voter fraud. What does the IRP, that is, Bruce Rauner, want Illinois Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains to know about Winchester v. IRP? From what I see, the answer is absolutely nothing. MADISON RECORD
— State central committeeman Winchester sues state GOP; case removed to federal court
https://madisonrecord.com/stories/511424774-state-central-committeeman-winchester-sues-state-gop-case-removed-to-federal-court
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bob Winchester, central committeeman of the Illinois Republican Party since 1992, claims in U.S. district court that the party rigged an election against him. His lawyer, Stephen Boulton of Chicago, alleges that the party improperly favored State Sen. Chapin Rose of Champaign for committeeman in an election on April 18. According to Boulton’s complaint, irregularities occurred at county conventions across the 15th Congressional district. He wrote that irregularities changed the vote “from the true result, a majority in favor of Winchester, to a false result, an alleged majority in favor of Rose.” In an interview on May 21, Boulton said that he had “a number” of affidavits from Madison County which demonstrate that Bob Winchester won the election. Last month, the Record reported that precinct committee men and women in Madison County chose Winchester over Rose by a margin of approximately 60 to 40 percent, and then as a sign of unity voted by acclamation to place 100 percent of the county’s vote in favor of Winchester. Winchester filed the suit in Hardin County, against state central committee members and State Board of Elections members who certified Rose’s election. The party removed the action to federal court on May 18. Boulton’s complaint described a county convention where, “only Rose was presented as a candidate for whom votes could be cast.” “Rose alone was nominated, and by the chairman of the convention,” the complaint states. He wrote that the chairman reported a unanimous vote for Rose to party staff. Boulton said it happened in Fayette County, where Randy Pollard serves as county GOP chairman. “It was over in 45 seconds,” Boulton said. “No understood what happened.” In the complaint, he wrote that several county chairmen reported incorrect results to staff, favoring Rose and that county chairmen and staff acted as agents of the state party. He wrote that the party, through staff, participated in the election by recruiting candidates and directing candidates to withdraw. He wrote that staff opposed Winchester due to “a strong likelihood of losing their positions if the present chairman is not re-elected.” The central committee re-elected its chairman, Tim Schneider, on May 19. Boulton said the committee seated Rose over an objection. “We expected that,” he said. “If Winchester was sitting there rather than Rose, the outcome might have been different.” The court clerk assigned the action to District Judge Staci Yandle.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Sen. Rose ‘railroaded’ over incumbent by GOP in State Central Committeeman race, affidavit says – Karen Kidd
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511425048-sen-rose-railroaded-over-incumbent-by-gop-in-state-central-committeeman-race-affidavit-says
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Fayette County Precinct committeeman said he was “confused” by a “nomination process” in April that somehow led to a win for state Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) over Robert Winchester, the longtime incumbent in the race for Republican State Central Committeeman in the 15th Congressional District, according to an affidavit obtained by Prairie State Wire. “After this sequence of rapid nomination and voice vote on closing nominations, which in my best estimate took much less than a minute, I turned to a colleague and asked, ‘What just happened?’,” Fayette County Precinct Committeeman Glen Mills said in the affidavit filed with the Illinois Board of Elections. Mills, a Brownstown resident, said in his affidavit that he “later learned” Randy Pollard, Rauner’s downstate director who acted as chair during the convention when the election took place, “reported the vote for Fayette County as unanimous in favor of Chapin Rose.” Mills claims in his affidavit that draft minutes from the convention back up his own memories about how Rose came to win the seat on the Republican State Central Committee that had been held by Winchester since 1992. “The only word I can use to describe the election proceeding on a subjective level is that the election of Mr. Rose was intentionally ‘railroaded’ through the convention at high speed while this precinct committeeman (Mills) was confused by the process,” Mills said in his affidavit. “I do not believe I was given a fair chance to vote for Mr. Winchester in the election for State Central Committeeman for the 15th District conducted on April 18, 2018, or even the opportunity to vote ‘present’ or otherwise not have my precinct’s weighted vote be counted for Mr. Rose.” In April, sources informed Prairie State Wire that Winchester had retained counsel to launch a challenge to voting procedures in his Republican State Central Committee re-election bid. Rose, an assistant Republican caucus leader, has represented the 51st district since 2013, having previously been a member of the state House for about a decade. The Illinois state Senate’s 51st District encompasses all of Dewitt, Piatt, Moultrie, Douglas and Shelby counties and parts of McLean, Champaign, Vermilion, Edgar and Macon counties. Sources told Prairie State Wire in April that the state GOP had run Rose against the incumbent Winchester to punish Winchester for backing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in her strong but unsuccessful March primary bid against Gov. Bruce Rauner. Earlier this month, Winchester’s attorney, Steve Boulton of Peraica & Associates in Chicago, said in a letter to state GOP General Counsel John Fogarty that the race results had been determined by a “group of unelected and merely appointed staff members” with “personal and financial interests” in the re-election of current state GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. “The procedure may have well have been employed before, but it is not properly authorized and stands in contravention of the plain language of the Election Code,” Boulton wrote in his letter. “Repetition of an unlawful practice does not make it legal. If such were true bank robbery would be legal today.” In his complaint filed in federal court, Winchester alleged the Illinois Republican party rigged the April 18 election against him. In an interview published this week in the Madison-St. Clair Record, Boulton claimed to have “a number” of affidavits that prove Winchester actually won the election. A source told the Prairie State Wire that Winchester was not even mentioned as an option by Pollard and that he’d called for a voice vote during the April 18 election. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Mills, in his affidavit, described what happened as slightly different from what the source described. Pollard, “very politically powerful in Fayette County,” supported Rose before the convention, “which was confirmed when Mr. Pollard had papers distributed to the Convention supporting Mr. Chapin (Rose), including to me, an action which I considered improper,” Mills said in his affidavit. “At the commencement of the election Mr. Pollard announced that there were two candidates for State Central Committeeman, Chapin Rose and Robert Winchester,” the affidavit said. “After announcing the candidates, Mr. Pollard immediately called for ‘nominations’ which caused me great confusion since he had just announced the two candidates. I did not know what the nominations were for, or what purpose they served, given that the candidates had just been announced.” Pollard then nominated Rose, who “received an immediate second,” the affidavit said. “I remained confused by this procedure, since the candidates were already announced by Mr. Pollard and I was trying to grasp why a nomination process was being conducted at all. In very short order, a voice vote to close nominations occurred, and Mr. Pollard declared the election over. I do not recall any actual vote for Mr. Chapin (Rose) at all.” Mills said in his affidavit that he reviewed draft minutes from the convention, a copy of which was attached to his affidavit, and found they “comport with my recollection that no election vote was actually taken.” “Further, the minutes reflect that Mr. Pollard nominated Mr. Rose only after asking for nominations three times,” the affidavit said. “This comports with my recollection that the actual sequence of from [sic] nomination of Mr. Rose to closing of nominations was very quick.” Pollard, Mills and Rose did not immediately respond to Prairie State Wire requests for comment.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Drama continues in state GOP ranks – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-chicago-fop-protest-20180521-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party held its organizational meeting Saturday and re-elected Gov. Rauner’s handpicked chairman as part of a compromise with insurgent conservatives. But despite that attempt to show unity, the battle is continuing and may end up in a federal courtroom. Bob Winchester, a former state representative from Rosiclare, had been the longest-serving member of the Republican State Central Committee, serving since 1992. Winchester is an opponent of Rauner and party Chairman Tim Schneider, and he was challenged for re-election by state Sen. Chapin Rose of Mahomet. The State Board of Elections certified Rose as the winner at a special May 10 meeting and said it didn’t have the authority to investigate what Winchester alleges were misdeeds that made Rose the victor to represent the 15th Congressional District GOP. Winchester’s attorney, Stephen Boulton, said he filed suit a week ago in Downstate Hardin County to try to stop Rose from being seated, but his office said the case was not electronically recorded as being filed until late last week, too late to prevent Rose from being seated. The lawsuit contends both the state GOP and the State Board of Elections violated Winchester’s federally constitutionally protected due process rights and that county vote totals were changed to a “false result” in favor of Rose. The Illinois GOP has filed notice to move the case to the U.S. District Court in Benton. “The Illinois Republican Party is confident that the State Central Committee elections were conducted in accordance with state law, our party bylaws, and in an open and transparent manner,” Illinois Republican Party Executive Director Andrew Collins said in a statement. “We are also confident that the results reported to the party by the county Republican central committees were accurate, that the State Board (of Elections) certification of those results was proper and that the results are now final,” Collins said.)

I first learned of the filing late Saturday evening, March 19, 2018, and I was only able to get a copy of the 18-page complaint this morning. CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Schneider says that while the GOP has its differences “there is much more that brings us together than separates us.” Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. Trump has promised to defend and advance the Republican Party platform. QUESTION: In Illinois, what separates Republicans? ANSWER: It is the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform. Those who reject the aforesaid planks dominate the IRP. They focus on driving out of the IRP those who support the aforesaid planks, that is, they focus on destroying the IRP. QUESTION: In Illinois, what further separates Republicans? ANSWER: It is support for Trump. Those who reject Trump dominate the IRP. They focus on driving out of the IRP those who support Trump, that is, they focus on destroying the IRP.)

While I took a graduate business course at UIC in 1971 and graduate business courses at Loyola 1972-1976, I sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances and pumped gasoline for Firestone Stores and collected delinquent taxes for IRS. While I took graduate accounting courses at DePaul 1976-1980, I collected delinquent taxes for IRS and audited federal agencies for GAO. While I took graduate finance courses at IIT 1992-1997, I audited federal agencies for GAO.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-met-grossman-picketing-grad-students-20180513-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Theoretically, graduate assistants are apprentices — graduate students in training to become the next generation of professors. In reality, they’re a pool of cheap labor. They teach the undergraduates and staff the laboratories for a fraction of the salaries professors command. Once, they were content to do so, knowing that when they’d earned a Ph.D., they’d make a respectable living. But those days are gone, as one of the strike’s organizers explained while handing me a union button, a strike poster and a plastic poncho donated by the United Automobile Workers, the graduate assistants’ union affiliate. “For many of us, an assistantship is as far as we’re going to get,” she said. “We want a decent paycheck for our limited time in the academic world.” There simply are no longer enough faculty openings for graduate assistants to move up to. Some will survive as the Ivory Tower’s equivalent of office temps — “non-tenure track” lecturers who never know how long their low-paying gig will last. Together the temps and graduate assistants comprise 80 percent of college instructors. Fifty years ago, they comprised 20 percent — and therein lies the difference between what it meant to be a graduate student in my day and the experience of those I stood beside on Columbia’s campus.)

REPUBLICAN NEWS WATCH
— Illinois GOP Chair Must Step Up for President Trump or Step Down – DOUG IBENDAHL
http://republicannewswatch.com/wp/?p=14488
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party held its reorganizational meeting on Saturday in downstate Springfield. Every four years after the 18 members of the state central committee are picked around the state, that committee convenes to choose the state party chairman. Apart from some minor deckchair rearranging on Saturday, the status-quo prevailed. Governor Bruce Rauner’s hand-picked state party chairman Tim Schneider was unanimously rewarded with another 4-year term as chair by the state central committee. Schneider must have looked around the room and saw no Chicago press amongst the small choir of Republicans, because near the end of the meeting he actually had a few kind words for President Trump. The local Springfield paper was the only outlet I saw which reported his short remarks on that score. This is noteworthy because I live in Cook County, same as Schneider, and not once have I ever heard Schneider stand-up for our President in Chicago media. Schneider has a unique platform as party chairman. If he had the desire, he could easily get in Chicago radio, television, and newspaper coverage pretty much any time he chose, just by virtue of the big title he holds. And you won’t be surprised to hear that our President gets hammered constantly on Chicago radio and television, and in the two daily newspapers which are both viciously anti-Trump. But safely ensconced in a room with only Republicans, 200 miles away from Chicago, Chairman Schneider managed to voice exactly one sentence in support of our President. We’re all supposed to rejoice. Preaching to the choir at a small GOP meeting is easy. Taking the message to the unconverted is not so easy, but that’s the duty you sign-on for if you say you want a party title.)

http://www.kcchronicle.com/2018/05/18/kane-county-board-chairman-people-leaving-state-to-avoid-high-taxes/a9k42ld/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Property tax levels [are] one of the biggest problems that we’re dealing with in Illinois,” he said. “People are moving away from Illinois. Literally 30,000 people moved out [last year].” Recalling his early years in public service, Lauzen said he’d hear from disgruntled homeowners. Now those homeowners aren’t calling him, but are leaving the state for good. “It usually was the seniors, the older folks, who used to call,” he said. “The older men would call up and they’d holler at you and the older ladies, they’d call and cried about the property tax burden. And they’re living on fixed incomes and it was a huge problem. “These days, I think many of us are finding that they don’t call anymore. It’s almost like they’ve given up and they just move so that’s a terrible thing.” Lauzen explained that change is long overdue and one of the ways to do that is to stop taxing people out of their homes. He believes he’s made a lot of progress during the past seven years. “Before I had the privilege to serve as chairman, we had a 50 percent increase in the property taxes to support the county,” he said. “In the last seven years it’s leveled out at zero increase.” That includes having to insert into the base the new construction while excluding a cost of living increase. “I’m very proud of holding the line,” he said. “But it is naturally getting harder and harder to live within our means without asking people for more.” Lauzen said that the public often complains about the spending, but that he’s doing his part to help reduce debt. “[The public] says that all you guys and ladies do is borrow and spend,” he said. “We’ve paid off approximately 65 percent of the debt in the last six to seven years.” Lauzen closed his presentation by sharing a slide of three beliefs that he referred to as “Truly Dumb Ideas.” He said that he hopes no one who attended the luncheon ever allows any of them to see the light of day. It includes combining all local pensions into one, increasing property taxes by 1 percent of the home value to pay off the state’s pensions unfunded liabilities and running the government like a business. Mark Pietrowski, DeKalb County chairman, and Scott Gryder, Kendall County chairman, also made presentations during the luncheon.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Are you a Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain? What information do you hope to get about today’s Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association (IRCCA) meeting and today’s Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) meeting, from who do you hope to get that information, and when do you hope to get that information? I hope to get a report on who spoke at the meetings, major announcements that were made, votes that were taken, the outcomes of those votes, and when and where the next meeting will be held. Most importantly, what did Mark Shaw specifically promise to do concerning conservatives?  I hope to get email reports from my IRP county chairman and from my IRP SCC member. I hope to get those reports before I send out this evening’s GOPUSA ILLINOIS email. Historically, beyond outrageously, beyond unacceptably, Illinois Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains have only gotten reports of what happened at IRCCA and IRP SCC meetings from the Democrat news media. According to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes, Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains should only know what the chairman of their Republican township/ward/county organizations tell them, no more and no less. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As lawmakers in Springfield careen toward a May 31 adjournment deadline, let’s get a few things straight. They haven’t agreed yet on a balanced budget for the fiscal year that starts in six weeks. They haven’t passed legislation to deal with the state’s alarming pension debt. They haven’t negotiated changes to programs that would make Illinois more business and tax friendly. The willful negligence of floating past the most serious challenges facing Illinois is repeating itself. No one should be surprised. The Illinois legislature is an avoidance expert. Fed-up residents respond by fleeing the state in alarming droves. State universities struggle to attract and keep students. Property taxes remain among the highest in the country.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: he correction ran on the upper left corner of B1 May 12. Experienced news readers know that if a correction runs on a front page, the error has to be big. Indeed, it was. The entire premise of the Michael Smolens column that ran the day before was erroneous. Smolens, a highly experienced former political reporter and government editor, wrongly reported that John Cox, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, discusses issues with disgraced ex-San Diego Mayor Bob Filner. The factual error was bad enough, but it also has led to suspicions of biased coverage and “gotcha journalism” over fairness. What appeared to be a tantalizing news lead came out of a meeting Cox had with the U-T editorial board April 23. Smolens was sitting in on the meeting to gather possible subject matter for his column. Cox was talking about getting a statistic on pensions and developing a relationship with Bob Fellner — NOT Filner.)

What do you want Mark Shaw to do in his roles as the Co-Chairman of the IRP and the President of the IRCCA to organize Illinois conservatives and to “lead conservative and grassroots outreach for the” IRP? Should he:

  1. Encourage Rauner to sign a pledge to defend and advance all the planks in the IRP platform, including its traditional family, right to life, immigration, and Second Amendment planks?
  2. Identify who the conservative leaders are in each county in Illinois, meet with them on a one on one basis, meet with them at regional meetings, and/or meet with them at statewide meetings?
  3. Identify who the conservative leaders are in Illinois on a platform plank basis, including those who have taken the lead on the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and Second Amendment planks and meet with them on a one on one basis, meet with them at regional meetings, and/or meet with them at statewide meetings?
  4. Encourage Dave Diersen to form the “Republican Assembly of DuPage County” to reach out to and organize the conservatives in DuPage County?
  5. Encourage all Illinois conservatives and Republicans to read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails?
  6. Encourage all Illinois conservative and Republican leaders to keep diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists? – Dave Diersen

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— RAUNER – YAY!
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/05/rauner-yay.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yay! Yay, teachers! Yay, [Democrat Illinois Supreme Court Justice] Ann Burke! Yay, Israel! Yay, Eunice Shriver! Yay, Kennedys! Yay, [Loyola] Ramblers! CapitolFax’s Rich Miller pulled together Governor Rauner uncomfortably “yaying” for an array of interesting folks, groups and other miscellaneous cheering reasons. Missing from the collection, though, is Governor Rauner’s “Yay, Planned Parenthood! Yay, Sanctuary state! Yay, Rauner Party leadership that stopped the IL GOP Platform-hugging conservative wing’s insurgent takeover!”)
— THORNER/O’NEIL: TIME TO HOLD CHURCH LEADERS RESPONSIBLE FOR PARISHIONERS’ POLITICS (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who are a member of a church, attend church services, and/or give money to a church who claim to be Republican, but a) who promote dependency on government and on charity, b) who promote booze, gambling, pot, and/or other vices, c) who promote LGBTQ activity, d) who promote abortion, e) who promote illegal immigration, and/or f) who promote other planks in the Democrat, Libertarian, and/or Green platforms.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and RINOs a) demonize, denigrate, and condemn those who voted for Ives as being “conservative insurgents;” b) say that “Rauner is happy GOP is ‘working together’ after leadership squabble;” c) say that Rauner said “Well, I love seeing everybody coming together and working together and forming partnerships and alliances. That’s all good;” d) say that Rauner sees the recent Illinois Republican Party (IRP) leadership deal as giving Ives voters a “larger voice” in the IRP; and d) say that Rauner sees the deal as “a sign of unity for his re-election efforts.” Are you a “conservative insurgent,” that is, were you one of the 342,906 who voted for Ives? I did. Do you believe the deal will give you a greater voice in the IRP? How did you learn of the deal? If you are a Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, did you first learn of the deal a) from the IRP, b) from your representative on the IRP State Central Committee, c) from the officers of your IRP county party organization, d) from the officers of your IRP township/ward party organization, e) from the Democrat news media, or f) from Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails?)

My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. – Those who want Tim Schneider reelected as IRP chairman have not asked you to attend,

– The meeting agenda might not include a public comment period,
– The meeting room might be filled to capacity before you get there,
– It appears that the Winchester v. IRP lawsuit has not been filed and that it will not be filed,

Kelly has released the following statement: “The last four years have been difficult ones for those of us who sounded the warning bell on Bruce Rauner and that bell has finally been heard at a terrible cost: Illinois is now a sanctuary state and expanded taxpayer-funded abortion on demand is the law of the land. The blame is not Governor Rauner’s alone; he had help. I blame Rauner’s payroll conservatives at Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois Opportunity Project, and Liberty Principles PAC. In 2013, when Rauner announced for Governor, his history as a liberal pro-abortion, pro-amnesty Democrat donor was already well-known. Ignoring this, a number of conservative leaders and donors heralded Rauner’s coming. Illinois Policy Institute’s John Tillman and Liberty Principles PAC’s Dan Proft were well-paid to induce conservative voters to support Rauner despite his left-wing history. A number of Illinois Tea Party leaders forced Rauner on us too, attacking anyone who opposed him. For the last four years I, too, have endured the public attacks of Rauner’s payroll conservatives. However, since Rauner’s betrayal on illegal immigration and abortion, many former Raunerites have apologized to me. We need to recruit new conservative and tea party leaders to take the place of those that let us down. I am running for Illinois Governor to reform, rebuild, and redeem the Illinois Republican Party now and for the future. Please join me.”

They had introduced my father and mother to each other and they sparked my interest in cars. The homes two and three doors north of my parent’s home are also Sears homes.)

In 2012, the Crete-Monee High School football team won a state championship. Crete also is home to more than 40 houses sold by Sears, making it the largest repository for these dwellings in the south suburbs, according to Phyllis Monks, president of the Crete Area Historical Society. Monks said residents were able to build “kit” homes because trains made frequent stops at the local depot, leaving all that was needed to build one in two boxcars.)

I bought a one bedroom condo in 1976 and a studio condo in 1974 in downtown Chicago so that I could walk to work and to night classes. I bought a new town home in 1972 when I worked in Harvey. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Moore wanted to move closer to work but said he could not afford the rent at apartments on the Northwest Side or nearby suburbs that would have made his commute more manageable. And even if he could, Moore said he often felt out of place in the predominantly white neighborhoods. “It’s almost like being an alien, you know,” Moore said. “It’s like, do I belong here?” Moore, who lives in North Lawndale, eventually found work as a community organizer in a job that reduced his travel time by more than half. Moore’s hunt for affordable housing, a shorter commute and a different neighborhood are among the elements highlighted in the Metropolitan Planning Council’s new report on the Chicago region’s segregation, which offers a buffet of initiatives that take aim at entrenched racism and inequities holding back the region.)

https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/how-free-is-the-free-press-in-trumps-america/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There is an old saying, “He who pays the piper calls the tune,” meaning that someone who provides the money has the right to determine what it is spent on. In journalism these days it has taken on a sinister connotation for everything from censoring school newspapers to the firing and even murder of outspoken journalists. Here in the U.S. we like to reflect on the concept of a free press as written into the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. But President Donald Trump describes journalists who offer anything but fawning coverage of him and his administration as “enemies of the people.” Another president, Richard Nixon, also once declared, “The press is the enemy.” Carl Bernstein, one of the Washington Post reporters who exposed Nixon’s Watergate scandal in the 1970s, says Trump’s rhetoric is similar to Nixon’s in that he is “trying to divide the country, and make the conduct of the press the issue, instead of the conduct of the president.” The Trump administration is trying to get the public to buy the idea that when a newspaper or television network reports anything that is at all unflattering to the president that newspaper or network is automatically displaying its bias. “In Donald Trump’s America,” said the Los Angeles Times in an editorial, “the mere act of reporting news unflattering to the president is held up as evidence of bias. Journalists are slandered. Facts that contradict Trump’s version of reality are dismissed as ‘fake news.’ Reporters and their news organizations are ‘pathetic,’ ‘very dishonest,’ ‘failing,’ and even, in one memorable turn of phrase, ‘a pile of garbage.’” While Trump aims his fire at even objective reporting that shines light on negative features of his administration, not all newspapers, television networks and other media outlets are placed on his enemies list. Some, like Fox News, shower praise on the president almost round the clock and he rewards them with frequent exclusive interviews. It is impossible to avoid the conclusion that a big difference between the networks and outlooks he likes and the ones he opposes correlates to who owns those various networks and outlets. It goes without saying that the high costs of putting out the news favors billionaires to become owners of huge chunks of print and broadcasting media and it is not always easy to keep track of who owns what. Recent headlines provide an example of how it can get confusing: “Comcast prepares all-cash bid to gate-crash Disney-Fox deal,” or “Disney Could Give Up Sky to Get Fox Assets.” Another fact is that big money doesn’t just limit itself to controlling editorial policy. At times it goes after the ability of newspapers to even continue to exist. Clarity about the nature of what goes on in a world where big money influences journalism was the aim of a May 8 Democracy Now show with Amy Goodman and Juan González. They talked about how rank and file journalists are rising up against a Wall Street hedge fund that is chewing up and spitting out newsrooms across the country. Alden Global Capital, a hedge fund, owns Digital First media, the nation’s second largest newspaper chain.)

NATIONAL REVIEW
— Stormy Daniels’s Lawyer Threatens to Sue Reporters for Digging into His Background – JACK CROWE (DIERSEN: What would reporters who disapproved of you find if they dug into your background? If reporters who disapproved of me dug into my background, they would find that a) I am no longer the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, or American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member. They would find a) that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) that my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. They would find that I have been a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999 and the GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. They would find that I am a Trump supporter, Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German American, my ancestors have been in America since 1844, union member for almost 12 years, federal employee for almost 30 years, federal retiree for more than 20 years, childless, pet-less, American nameplate car owner, and even worse things. — Retirement stresses us out, especially those who have saved – Jill Schlesinger (DIERSEN: One could argue that if you are not on track to have a) at least $1 million saved for your retirement or b) at least $50,000/year in pension, Social Security, and other income, you are planning to “go on the dole.” According to this article, “a whopping 62 percent of workers have not actually calculated how much money they will need to have saved so that they can live comfortably in retirement.”)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/tca-retirement-stresses-us-out-especially-those-who-have-saved-20180510-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The 2018 Retirement Confidence Survey (“RCS,” a joint venture between the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute and research firm Greenwald & Associates) is out, and about two-thirds of Americans feel confident or at least somewhat confident in their ability to retire comfortably. Yet nearly the same share say that preparing for retirement makes them feel stressed. You may think that these feelings arise because so many have saved very little. Among respondents who are still working, 45 percent report that the total value of their household’s savings and investments, excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit pension plans, is less than $25,000. Nine percent report totals of $25,000 to $49,999, 11 percent have $50,000 to $99,999, 15 percent are at $100,000 to $249,999 and 21 percent have $250,000 or more. But when many of those who have saved very little call my radio show or podcast, they don’t actually seem stressed. They are clear-eyed about their priorities and seem to know what they need to do. But for those who have managed to accumulate some money, usually $100,000 or more, that’s when the worries seem to start. Perhaps the stress comes from not knowing or fearing what lies ahead. According to RCS, although so many are anxious about the future, a whopping 62 percent of workers have not actually calculated how much money they will need to have saved so that they can live comfortably in retirement.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “All you have to do is go to the County Building on election day. You couldn’t find a county employee anywhere—they’re all working a precinct. You have patronage, and then you’ve got pinstripe patronage, which is all these bond counselors and contractors and construction persons who contribute heavily to campaigns. Regular patronage is: work as precinct captain equals a job in the forest preserve. Pinstripe patronage is: contribute to me, and I’ll throw you a no-bid contract. Pinstripe patronage is all the change orders in contracts, all the bond counseling—and $13 million of consultants this year. Come on. How much can a consultant tell you that you don’t already know? “We are looking at a situation where being elected means having the money to buy television time. George Dunne used to raise maybe $80,000. Now we have people raising $3 million, $4 million to win a county-wide office because they’re buying television time. Who ends up paying for that television time? The taxpayer. Because the construction projects continue, the consulting contracts continue, the building continues, the change orders continue, the patronage continues—and it just gets bigger and bigger. And the same people make the donations that pay for the candidate to be on TV.”)

ZERO HEDGE

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-05-12/audible-gasp-was-heard-when-chicago-fed-unveiled-its-solution-pension-problem
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An audible gasp went out in the breakout room I was in at last month’s pension event cosponsored by The Civic Federation and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. That was when a speaker from the Chicago Fed proposed levying, across the state and in addition to current property taxes, a special property assessment they estimate would be about 1% of actual property value each year for 30 years. Evidently, that wasn’t reality-shock enough. This week the Chicago Fed published that proposal formally. It’s linked here. It surely ranks among the most blatantly inhumane and foolish ideas we’ve seen yet. Homeowners with houses worth $250,000 would pay an additional $2,500 per year in property taxes, those with homes worth $500,000 would pay an additional $5,000, and those with homes worth $1 million would pay an additional $10,000. Is the Chicago Fed blind to human consequences? Confiscatory property tax rates have already robbed hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of Illinois families of their home equity — probably the lion’s share of whatever wealth they had. Property taxes in many Illinois communities already exceed 3%, 4% and even 5% of home values. Across Illinois, the average is a sky-high 2.67 percent, the highest in the nation.)

— The Trump administration is trying to turn the McCain death joke into a ‘leak’ scandal – Chris Cillizza (DIERSEN: Of course, ever since I became the GOPUSA Illinois Editor in 2000, I have been demonized, denigrated, and condemned as being a leaker by Democrats and Democrat plants, by Libertarians and Libertarian plants, by Greens and Green plants, and by RINOs. Should I sue the aforesaid? I have never been a leaker.)

— At Iraq’s polls, many voters seek patronage and jobs – AP (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always promoted patronage. Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986.)

NEW REPUBLIC
— The Long, Tortured History of the Job Guarantee How liberals, over decades, worked to undermine a proposal that has long enjoyed public support – PETER-CHRISTIAN AIGNER and MICHAEL BRENES (DIERSEN: Since 1966, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who were not federal employees have always shouted that the federal government is the “employer of last resort” and that federal employees are lazy, stupid, and even worse things. They, and many millions of others, have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, f) because they cannot pass a physical examination, g) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or h) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against the aforesaid.)
https://newrepublic.com/article/148388/long-tortured-history-job-guarantee
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Very soon after LBJ’s War on Poverty began, various government departments began pushing for direct job-creation and calling for the government to become “employer of last resort,” ideas JFK and LBJ had many times rejected. But domestic welfare was subsumed by the war. Hubert Humphrey carried the banner in 1968, promoting federal planning for jobs, housing, and community development. But when he lost to Nixon, reformers in the party rejected this approach. “New Politics” Democrats turned to George McGovern, who implied that postwar Keynesianism had failed, and instead offered a far less popular solution with voters (and the poor): a “demogrant,” or universal basic income (UBI). Every American would receive an annual income of $1,000, instead of a job. The debate between “guaranteed” jobs or income played out in the 1972 primary between Humphrey and McGovern. Each candidate battled for the soul of the Democratic Party, with two competing versions for resolving unemployment and poverty. In Humphrey’s corner were the NAACP and AFL-CIO. Remnants of the anti-war movement and wealthy suburban liberals backed McGovern.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— A Tweak to Rules for Resigning From Your Job and More – Erich Wagner (DIERSEN: My Democrat superiors in the federal government always treated me like I was “under investigation,” like they had found me guilty, and like they were punishing me. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Office of Personnel Management on Monday issued a memo tweaking the rules governing how agencies handle employees who resign while under investigation. In a memo to chief human capital officers, OPM Director Jeff Pon implemented a new provision of the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act requiring agencies to make a “permanent notation” on the personnel file of someone who leaves his or her job while an investigation into the employee is ongoing. Such investigations include those done by an inspector general and adverse personnel actions for performance or misconduct. Pon wrote that the notation should be applied to one’s record only after the person has been given an opportunity to respond to the findings of an investigation. The new procedure does not impact an employee’s ability to appeal the findings of an investigation or adverse action to the Merit Systems Protection Board, and if the employee wins, the agency would remove the notation from his or her record.)

I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32. I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in 1980 to transfer from IRS to GAO.)
