Following the social media outrage with calls for his termination and the creation of industry blacklists, Google CEO Sundar Pichai released a company-wide notice stating that the senior engineer violated the company’s Code of Conduct. Damore has since confirmed his dismissal. In the memo, Damore called the tech giant’s diversity initiatives as an “ideological echo chamber,” and advocated for diversity of ideas and meritocracy. He suggested that basic psychological variances can explain the lack of women in certain sectors of the industry. Pichai’s memo, titled “Our words matter,” states that the contents of the email were “fair to debate, regardless of whether a vast majority of Googlers disagree with it,” according to Recode. “However, portions of the memo violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace,” continued Pichai. “Our job is to build great products for users that make a difference in their lives. To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK. It is contrary to our basic values and our Code of Conduct, which expects ‘each Googler to do their utmost to create a workplace culture that is free of harassment, intimidation, bias and unlawful discrimination.” Damore’s email has become radioactive for Google, with many within the company also calling for repercussions. The Daily Caller viewed evidence of multiple internal emails showing conversations between various senior engineers demanding retribution for the memo’s contents and circulation. Bloomberg reports that Damore was fired after internal discussion as multiple employees supported firing him for airing his views. The senior engineer confirmed his dismissal in an email to the publication. My guess is that a lawsuit at Google is going to explore that question under the harsh glare of public scrutiny. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Many Americans can’t remember anything other than an economy with skyrocketing inequality, in which living standards for most Americans are stagnating and the rich are pulling away. It feels inevitable. But it’s not. A well-known team of inequality researchers — Thomas Piketty, Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman — has been getting some attention recently for a chart it produced. It shows the change in income between 1980 and 2014 for every point on the distribution, and it neatly summarizes the recent soaring of inequality. The line on the chart (which we have recreated as the red line above) resembles a classic hockey-stick graph. It’s mostly flat and close to zero, before spiking upward at the end. That spike shows that the very affluent, and only the very affluent, have received significant raises in recent decades. This line captures the rise in inequality better than any other chart or simple summary that I’ve seen. So I went to the economists with a request: Could they produce versions of their chart for years before 1980, to capture the income trends following World War II. You are looking at the result here. (CHART) The message is straightforward. Only a few decades ago, the middle class and the poor weren’t just receiving healthy raises. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner announced Friday he’s chosen Sam Pfister to lead his Washington DC team. Pfister replaces Kathy Lydon, who had served Illinois in DC for years dating back to Sen. Charles Percy. Lydon quit three weeks ago as the governor overhauled his staff and more than two dozen of his inner circle were either fired or quit in protest. Pfister will be paid $75,000. Pfister’ most event job is four years as the associate director of state outreach for the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. The think tank was founded by Richard Fink, who heads the Koch Industries lobbying group in Washington, DC. Charles Koch is also a board member of the Center. The Wall Street Journal has called the Mercatus Center “the most important think tank you’ve never head of.” The Koch brothers have given more than 100 million to conservative and libertarian policy and advocacy groups. Rauner has also hired a deputy director of communications Beth Tomev. She started earlier this week, but no announcement was made. She will be paid $117,000. Tomev has been a public affairs consultant, worked at Fox News Chicago, as Walter Jacobson’s producer, and taught communications and journalism classes at Columbia College and Loyola University. “I did not know what I was getting into when I took Tomev’s class,” according to a review of Tomev on Rate My Professor. “Her lectures are nonsensical, she takes up class time with irrelevant stories, grades unreasonably tough without providing clear expectations for assignments, and has purposely ambiguous exam questions that can tank your grade. — Bill Would Prevent VA From Rehiring Previously Fired Employees – Ian Smith  (DIERSEN: GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job.  IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always promoted patronage. Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986.)
