(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) independently offered this idea, which, in a different time, some could label “socialist” for its dependence on the federal government. The details of the proposals — which Jayapal introduced in legislation Friday and Hawley recommended in a Washington Post op-ed Thursday — differ, but the general concept is the same. President Trump and Republicans have spent the past year accusing Democrats of being socialists and warning that their policies would turn the United States into Venezuela. Yet in the face of an enormous crisis that has crushed the world, they have backed spending trillions of taxpayer dollars in relief efforts, sending $1,200 checks to Americans and promising health-care coverage for uninsured Americans who contract the disease.)

Consequently, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $20,157 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

The Adams Committee Democratic Central Committee announced it will postpone its caucus because of Illinois stay-at-home order, which is in line with the Democratic National Convention delaying its convention to August. The Democratic Central Committee will elect a new chairman after Chairman Keith Niewohner announced last year that he wished to retire as chairman but will remain a committeeman. Niewohner said it’s important that the committees are able to meet in-person to elect a new chairman, but that now is the time to focus “on the health, safety and well-being of ourselves, our families, the community and all of our momentum.” A date for a future caucus was not set. Dave Bockhold, chairman of the Adams County Republican Central Committee, said the party’s executive committee is seeking to host the caucus by mail. — Missing the Point of Plymouth Rock – David Randall (DIERSEN: From what I see, ever-increasingly, Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and RINOs hint/imply/argue/shout that if you are a Republican, the longer that your ancestors have been in America, a) the more that you have benefitted from their discrimination against minorities and against females, b) the more that you should pay the price of Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion, and c) the more reparations that you should pay.)
https://news.yahoo.com/missing-point-plymouth-rock-103005635.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Of course the Pilgrim landing at Plymouth Rock in 1620 explains American history. Of course the 1619 Project’s shoddy exercise in vituperation is meant to delegitimize America. John G. Turner’s recent article in National Review is an extended exercise in missing the point. Turner, a scholar of the history of American religion, and the author of a recent book on the Plymouth colony, surveys the debate about the New York Times’s 1619 Project with the traditional attitude of a liberal scholar — a facile resort to moral equivalence. Turner, positioning himself as the neutral and expert arbiter, frames the 1619 Project and its critics as equally mistaken — the one unduly obsessed with the 1619 arrival of blacks in Virginia as the foundation of an America built on slavery, and the other unduly obsessed with the 1620 arrival of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, as the foundation of an America built on liberty. Neither view, says Turner, is correct. Nor are views of America as built on liberty in 1776 or 1787. All the supposed foundations of liberty are compromised by racism or elitism: The proper way to understand America is to look at the endless details of Americans’ flaws, and not their sweeping aspirations. Turner’s entire approach is misguided.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: States and cities across the country are cutting off access to open records and canceling in-person meetings, starving the public — not to mention lobbyists and other influence-brokers — of information as the coronavirus outbreak reaches into all corners of civic life. The public access shutdown comes just as local officials make unprecedented decisions about health care and how to disburse billions of dollars in federal aid. And it could undermine years of hard-won victories on access to information, some transparency advocates say, with now-temporary restrictions enduring even after this crisis has receded. Meetings that typically allow constituents to physically interact with their representatives have been suspended. Activists and lobbyists no longer have physical access to state lawmakers in some places. And many cities and states, their staff preoccupied with the virus, have halted or curbed their responses to public records requests. That is meeting pushback from some public transparency and good government advocates who warn that a public health emergency shouldn’t undermine the public’s access to the workings of government — particularly when that government is making critical, life-and-death decisions. One advocate drew a parallel to how some records vanished from public view after the Sept. 11 attacks. “Here’s another huge national event, this health crisis, that is probably also going to set new precedents for what’s going to be available or not and how people are going to respond or not respond based on the new normal,” said Daniel Bevarly, executive director National Freedom of Information Coalition. In-the-open policymaking has receded as elected officials hunker down.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Office of Personnel Management on Monday released a policy clearing the way for increased recruitment, retention and relocation incentives — the “3Rs,” in government lingo — for employees in high-demand positions. Normally, agencies may pay up to an additional 25 percent of salary, but with OPM’s permission they can pay up to 50 percent more. “Agencies may request that OPM waive one or more of these limits to address a critical agency need, such as agency programs or projects related to the President’s declaration of a national emergency concerning the COVID-19 pandemic,” OPM said, inviting agencies to make requests and providing a template for them to use.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/04/06/coronavirus-navy-calls-fired-crozier-stupid-more-ships-test-positive/2955472001/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s unclear what prompted Modly’s sudden change of heart. However, hours earlier President Donald Trump waded into the controversy, saying at a White House briefing that he would “look into” Crozier’s case. In addition, powerful lawmakers called for Modly to be fired. And the Navy, shortly after Trump spoke, said it had extended the deadline for its investigation into Crozier’s letter. Trump called the letter a “mistake” that had worried families and showed “weakness.” But he said Crozier has had a “very good” career. “I don’t want to destroy somebody for having a bad day,” he said. Relieving an officer of command typically ends the officer’s career. After getting fired, they often take administrative jobs that lead to retirement. Trump said he was good at settling such issues and “can figure it out very fast.”)

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/491072-trump-team-picks-fight-with-twitter-tv-networks-over-political-speech
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In recent weeks, the Trump campaign has threatened legal action against TV stations for airing an ad cut by a Democratic super PAC that makes it seem as if Trump called the coronavirus a “hoax.” It has also been sending scores of emails to Twitter to flag videos being produced and shared by Democrats to make the case that the content runs afoul of the company’s policy on manipulated media. And this week, the Trump campaign took the unusual step of producing a deliberately misleading clip of former Vice President Joe Biden calling the coronavirus a “hoax” with the sole purpose of testing Twitter to see if it would enforce its rules equally on both the Trump and Biden campaigns. “Everything indicates that the Democrat donors who run Silicon Valley are intent on stacking the deck against President Trump’s reelection,” said Matt Wolking, a Trump campaign spokesman. “Their lack of transparency is further evidence that this is politically motivated interference in the 2020 election. Political speech and debate should not be policed and silenced by faceless, unknown actors and social justice warriors manipulating algorithms behind closed doors.” Since Trump was elected president, there has been an explosion of media fact-checking, leading to enormous pressure on platforms to sanction or pull content that is determined to be misleading. The president and his campaign have been accused of spreading misinformation through campaign ads countless times.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-coronavirus-is-breaking-down-along-familiar-political-lines-11586001600
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Because the outbreak has hit urban areas harder than less-populated communities, it has been felt less in the nation’s Republican strongholds than in Democratic ones, bringing a partisan tint to views of how the outbreak is being experienced and should be addressed. That has also meant that some Republican elected officials have been hesitant to call for statewide stay-at-home orders for fear of upending rural areas that have yet to record many cases or any at all. As of Thursday, 91% of counties that voted for Hillary Clinton for president in 2016 had at least one case of coronavirus, and 47% had at least one death, a Wall Street Journal analysis of virus data compiled by Johns Hopkins University shows. By contrast, 69% of counties that voted for President Trump had at least one case, and 14% had a death. Those counties on the whole are less densely populated than Clinton counties, and most rural areas tend to lean Republican. Only about a fifth of the states, all with large rural populations and Republican governors, didn’t have statewide stay-at-home directives in place as of Friday. The GOP governors of Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Tennessee, who had resisted issuing statewide shelter-in-place orders, were among those who reversed course and imposed them this past week. Discrepancies between rural and urban America are creating tensions within states.)

For my wife and I, our recent stock market gains have been lost. I am sure that the value of our home, vehicles, etc. has gone down. According to the survey, which solicited responses from 1,201 people between March 23 and March 27, 58.2% say the crisis has had a negative impact on their personal finances (30.9% called the impact somewhat negative, and 27.3% described it as very negative). https://www.thesun.co.uk/uncategorized/11331227/trump-blasts-ex-navy-capt-brett-crozier-coronavirus-alarms-agrees-ousting/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Captain Brett Crozier will now be ‘reassigned’ according to his superiors, despite the Navy facing a huge backlash over the dismissal. The news came just one day after a video emerged of hundreds of sailors cheering the Captain as he walked off the aircraft carrier after being relieved of duties. Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly told reporters on Thursday that he “lost confidence in [Crozier’s] ability to lead that warship” after he sent the letter, and relieved him of duty. Crozier was to be reassigned while investigators consider whether he should face disciplinary action, said Modly. More than 120,000 people have signed a petition calling on the U.S. Navy to reinstate Crozier. “His actions possibly saved many lives,” said the Change.org petition said. “Although he was fired, his plan to safely remove crew members was still implemented. He is a hero who should be rewarded.” Crozier “was absolutely correct in raising” concerns about Covid-19 but “it was the way in which he did it” that “undermined” the Navy’s efforts and “created a little bit of panic on the ship,” Modly said. But he said the letter was sent outside the chain of command while the Navy was already “fully responding.” He added that Crozier copying as many people as he did on the letter demonstrated “extremely poor judgment,” and said: “He did not take care to ensure that it couldn’t be leaked.” Crozier will be reassigned in the U.S. Navy role, but won’t be discharged, Modly said on Friday. But despite this, Crozier was cheered for by hundreds as he left the USS Theodore Roosevelt on Thursday. In videos posted online, one person can be heard shouting: “Now that’s how you send off one of the greatest captains you ever had.” Hundreds of sailors chanted “Captain Crozier!” and a man calls him the “G.O.A.T.,” or the “greatest of all time,” and “a man of the people.”)

https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/529040855-first-amendment-authority-pritzker-s-demand-that-paper-unpublish-story-extreme-measure
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A First Amendment authority says a demand by Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office that a central Illinois newspaper unpublish a story about the governor’s progressive income tax proposal was “highly unusual.” “Push back from a politician about facts being wrong or problems with the overall tone of the piece is what you normally see,” David Snyder, executive director of the First Amendment Coalition, told Prairie State Wire. “And if the paper did get the facts wrong, it should correct them immediately. But asking for a retraction of an entire article is a pretty extreme measure.” Pritzker’s office reportedly asked the Jacksonville Journal-Courier last month to unpublish a story by The Center Square about the governor’s plans to cut spending if voters in November shoot down his plans to shift from a flat income tax to a progressive one. The tax shift proposal, an amendment to the state constitution, is on the ballot this fall. In a follow-up story, The Center Square wrote that a spokesman for the governor, Jordan Abudayyeh, sent an email to the paper’s editor saying that the article was “flawed” and lacked context. “Ultimately, it would be prudent to take down this partisan content masquerading as news,” she was quoted as writing in the email. The Center Square said that a video accompanying story on its website shows Pritzker saying what he is quoted as saying in the story. “The governor’s office did not alert The Center Square to any errors in the Feb. 7 article, headlined ‘If voters reject progressive income tax, Pritzker promises to cut state spending, and no corrections were published,” the follow-up story said. Snyder, an attorney, said that only the example more extreme that he’s aware of is a private Swiss bank, Julius Baer Group, in 2008 getting a court order to shut down Wikileaks.org in a dispute over postings on the site by a former employee of the bank. The ruling was later overturned.)

https://foxillinois.com/news/local/why-are-some-businesses-essential-and-others-not
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite the potential for disagreement, some labor attorneys said there is no legal recourse available for closed businesses to argue they are essential. “The practical answer is, where you going to go?” Baker said. “The courts are closed. I think the real question is, how enforceable is the executive order?” Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell said his department has not been forced to close any nonessential businesses, but has the authority to do so. “We are not looking to complicate people’s lives and these business owners,” Campbell said. “We understand the predicament they are in and we certainly feel for them. But the order is the order, and we do have the teeth in it to charge someone with a misdemeanor if necessary, but we will do our best to avoid that.” Campbell said any businesses unsure of their status will be treated with discretion. “There could be some businesses that fall within the gray area, and we certainly are not immediately going to shut them down,” Campbell said. The Springfield Police Department also said they have not had to shut down any businesses involuntarily.)

The substitution would have added language designed to further prevent gerrymandering, especially racial gerrymandering, but it also would have restarted the clock on the amendment process and prolonged it. . .Del. https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2020-04-02/parties-race-adapt-politicking-pandemic
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A perceived advantage the Trump campaign has in this new territory could prove fragile. Trump’s operatives have built an intimidating and costly digital machine around unprecedented social media micro-targeting. It is fueled by a conservative media ecosystem that reliably draws in masses of voters who help amplify Trump’s message. That ecosystem is showing signs of strain, however, as voters seek out reliable information about the virus, which some of the leading outlets on the right failed to provide when they initially dismissed its danger. Republicans are now bulking up their digital infrastructure. Republican National Committee volunteers made 1.4 million voter contacts during last Saturday’s “National Day of Action,” using a phone script that starts by asking voters about their health and offers information about medical-care resources before they begin detailing Trump’s efforts in the pandemic. The GOP’s chief volunteer-training program, the Trump Victory Leadership Initiative, has gone virtual and hasn’t slowed in the process. There were 312 events that trained 1,390 volunteers during its first week online.)

NEW YORK POST
— Impeachment was a dire distraction from coronavirus for Trump administration – Miranda Devine (DIERSEN: What adverse actions that were taken against you distracted you? The following adverse actions distracted me: My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $20,157 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.

— Retirees seeking safe investments are paying the price – Michelle Singletary
https://www.telegram.com/news/20200329/michelle-singletary-retirees-seeking-safe-investments-are-paying-price
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The go-to strategy when a financial crisis hits is for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. The theory is that, by making borrowing cheaper, consumers will help rev up the economy by buying stuff on credit. But this quick fix has seriously hurt savers, especially those retirees who have sheltered their hard-earned savings away from the stock market. And as the Dow Industrial average continues its hair-raising volatility, more retirees will likely flee to bank-deposit accounts. However, with interest rates now at rock bottom, these savers will be exposed to another major risk — inflation. The government’s fiscal policies punish savers, asserts Sharon Kimball, who retired from the federal government in 2018 after almost 30 years. Kimball, 66, is a regular reader who has long stayed away from investing in equities. For her retirement account under the federal Thrift Savings Plan, she put all her contributions in the G fund, which is invested in short-term U.S. Treasury securities. Kimball’s other retirement savings have all been placed in certificates of deposit (CDs). The Virginia resident said she just couldn’t stomach the roller-coaster ride of investing in stocks or mutual funds. Her hope was for the CDs to produce just enough interest to offset any impact of inflation. Rates on CDs and money market deposit accounts, which are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), were pretty puny before the spread of COVID-19. But things are about to get even worse for savers who have sought refuge in these federally backed accounts.)
