CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— After Facebook settles class action, Google is sued – JOHN PLETZ (DIERSEN: Have you ever been a member of a class in a class action lawsuit? I was. In 1988, when I was 40 years old, I became an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged my Democrat GAO superiors with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. The members of the class were GAO employees who were White, male, and over age 40. The lawsuit failed because instead of uniting, class members “cut deals” with their Democrat superiors “under the table” to keep their jobs. Class members agreed to help their Democrat superiors get rid of other class members. I should write a book about the class members in GAO’s Chicago office who did everything that they could to get rid of me to keep their jobs. They kept me off audits of IRS. They gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. They did not promote me beyond GS-13. They stressed the following to demonize me, to denigrate me, and to condemn me: a) I was conservative, b) I was Republican, c) I had avoided the draft, d) I was baptized, raised and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, e) I was 100% German American, f) I lived in Crete 1948-1972, g) I had lived in Wheaton since 1978, h) my wife had a good job and we had retirement savings, i) my wife and I had given up trying to have children, j) we did not adopt, k) we did not become foster parents, l) I had owned a 1972 Corvette since 1971, a 1962 Chevy Impala SS collector car since 1989, and a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T collector car since 1994, m) my ancestors had been in America since 1844, n) etc. And then, in 1997, when I was 49 years old, they helped my GAO superiors force me to take their early retirement “offer.”)

Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would never stoop to seek or take a job with the federal government. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, f) because they cannot pass a physical examination, g) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or h) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against the aforesaid.)

— How to Navigate Your Most Dangerous Decade – Liz Weston (DIERSEN QUESTION: What could Diersen have done to avoid being forced by his Democrat GAO superiors to take early retirement in 1997 when he was 49 years old? ANSWER: a) Diersen should NOT have become an active member in a class action lawsuit in 1988 when he was 40 years old that charged his superiors with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation, b) Diersen should NOT have complained about political affiliation, reverse discrimination, or age discrimination, c) Diersen should have been a yes-man, d) Diersen should NOT have avoided the draft, and e) Diersen should have always been a Democrat.)
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Losing a job is almost always traumatic. In your 50s, job loss can be devastating — and devastatingly common. More than half the workers who entered their 50s with stable, full-time jobs were laid off or pushed out at least once by age 65, according to an analysis of employment data from 1990 to 2016 by the nonprofit newsroom ProPublica and the Urban Institute, a nonprofit think tank. Only 10% of those who lost a job ever found another that paid as much, and most never recovered financially. Such concerns may seem remote in a booming economy, when the official unemployment rate is 3.5% overall and just 2.4% for those 55 and over. But recessions are inevitable, and even in good times older workers can be more vulnerable to involuntary job loss because of age discrimination. These realities make it important to have a plan for navigating what could be your most dangerous decade.)

I would focus on the Milton Township Republican Organization, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and the Illinois Republican Party. I would focus on those leaders who glorify, praise, and pander to those members who glorify, praise, and pander to them. I would focus on those leaders who demonize, denigrate, condemn, and destroy those members who do not glorify, praise, and pander to them.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/roncarucci/2020/01/13/how-your-leadership-team-might-be-setting-a-terrible-example/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the everyday intensity of leading an organization, teams at the top can lose sight of the signals they send, and whether or not the example they’re setting is one they’d actually want followed. The team at the top of an part of any organization (enterprise, function, region, business unit) has disproportionate levels of influence over those it leads. People further down in the organization look to their leaders for cues on what’s acceptable (and what isn’t) and the team’s behaviors – both good and bad – will be emulated. Having your actions play out publicly as if on a jumbotron, is a huge responsibility, but unfortunately too many teams don’t take this responsibility as seriously as they should. The consequences can be farther reaching than most leadership teams realize. . .If a video camera captured your leadership team in action for a full day, how would you feel about having that video used as training for the rest of the organization? Being on a leadership team should be viewed as a privilege. And along with that privilege comes a responsibility to behave in ways you would be proud to have the rest of the organization emulate.)

— A Scrappy Iowa Start-Up Is the ‘It’ Read for Political Insiders Iowa Starting Line began as a man and his laptop. It’s now a rare success story in the ailing world of local news. – Michael M. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/31/business/media/iowa-caucus-media-starting-line.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The best political journalism you’ve never heard of is coming from a scrappy start-up in the East Village. The East Village of Des Moines, that is. Iowa Starting Line, a no-frills news outlet that started out as a rookie reporter and his Twitter account, is the new must-read of the 2020 campaign. Elite reporters follow it. Candidates care about it. And at a painful time in the local news business, its six-person staff has started to rival The Des Moines Register for scoops and influence in the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus. “If I want to know what’s happening on the ground in Iowa, I’m clicking on The Register or Iowa Starting Line, and not necessarily in that order,” said Tim Alberta, Politico’s chief political correspondent. At a recent debate night in Des Moines, Starting Line’s founder and editor, Pat Rynard, an unassuming Missourian in a blazer and checked shirt, was surrounded by network news reporters seeking the latest political gossip. Dave Weigel, a national writer for The Washington Post, told Mr. Rynard he reads the site to stay current. “It’s so the locals don’t think, ‘This East Coast schmuck doesn’t know anything,’” Mr. Weigel quipped. Mr. Rynard, 34, is a genial former Democratic operative who left his job in 2015 to try his hand at journalism. Now his team of five reporters — some barely out of college — is bigger than the political staffs at many of the state’s newspapers, which have been badly hurt by layoffs. Starting Line, which is donor- and ad-supported, opened its first newsroom in June in Des Moines’s hip East Village district. (Before that, Mr. Rynard was a solo act, editing from home with his dachshund, Franklin, at his feet.) The stark décor is, almost accidentally, start-up chic: concrete floors, industrial lighting, a bare-bones podcast room where Jane Sanders, wife of Bernie, was a recent guest.)

Basically, he’s saying that old workers ought to just vanish into the sunset and uses dog-whistle phrases like: These “diehards” have varying motivations for extending their careers. They “may feel” they still have much to offer. You may also need to work with senior-level people to “alter their positions” Imagine you had to explain to white workers why “diehard” black workers are in the way? Or male workers why “diehard” females are in the way? Or tell a black worker you have to “alter his position” because a white guy wants it. Did it escape your Miami Herald [editors] that age discrimination is illegal? Immoral? My opinion as a 40-year reader of the Herald? Cassel is the one that should be (forcibly) marched into the sunset.)

— Simplifying Public Service Loan Forgiveness – Kery Murakami (DIERSEN: Because I have always been a Republican, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government always hinted/implied/argued/shouted a) that the college courses that I took were not job-related, did not help me carry out my job duties, and qualified me for a “new trade or business” and b) that the “real reason” why I took college courses was to get a job in the private sector.)

FEDERAL NEWS NETWORK
— Should GAO get more funding? Some think so (DIERSEN: The Democrats who run GAO wasted my career and forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, and/or veteran.)

NEWS ONE
— How Closing The Racial Wealth Gap Would Change Black History (DIERSEN: What would your superiors say that they did to fight the racial wealth gap? My Democrat GAO superiors would stress that they forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $20,157 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors would stress that they did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors would stress that they forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. My aforesaid Democrat superiors would stress that the aforesaid adverse actions that they took against me directly benefited their employees who were minorities.)

— Can Democrats Win Back Trump Voters—Without Compromising their Soul? Many analysts say Democrats need to score significant swing voter support to win in 2020. The question is whether they can do that without tilting to the center. – Tana Ganeva (DIERSEN: If you are a Republican, what would Democrats stress to you to get you to leave the Republican Party? They would stress to me how the Republican Party in Illinois, in DuPage County, in Milton Township, and in Wheaton ever-increasingly fails/refuses to defend/advance its platform, and especially its traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, Second Amendment, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks.)

— How soon, if not already, will those who want Republicans to lose elections succeed in getting the Republican Party to officially adopt the following rules? – Dave Diersen
http://www.gopillinois.com

1. The Republican Party will not support candidates unless they are at least one of the following: young, minority, female, veteran, non-conservative, non-Protestant, non-German American, their ancestors have not been in America for a long time.

2. The Republican Party will not allow people to hold leadership positions in the party unless they are at least one of the following: young, minority, female, veteran, non-conservative, non-Protestant, non-German American, their ancestors have not been in America for a long time.

3. The more of the following that candidates and party leaders are, the more support that the Republican Party will give them: young, minority, female, veteran, non-conservative, non-Protestant, non-German American, their ancestors have not been in America for a long time.

It is a team made up of editors, photographers, artists, reporters and more who keep watch on local affairs and seek out the information that readers use to manage their government and enhance their quality of life.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Who are you, really? That’s a question most employers want to know the answer to. Beyond your cover letter and resume or CV, what are you about? Are you trustworthy, respectful, responsible? Are you a hard worker? Will you follow through on promises? Because most people are on their best behavior during the interview process, it can be hard for hiring managers or employers to tell. So they do the same thing your Bumble date does: they Google you. In particular, they look at your Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social media profiles you have publicly available. Then they browse. Or scope. Or scour. According to a survey by CareerBuilder, a full 70 percent of employers “use social media to screen candidates before hiring.” Even more striking is the follow-on statistic: 54 percent of employers surveyed said they chose not to hire a candidate based on content found on their social media profile(s). Of those hiring managers who chose not to hire someone due to their social media presence, the top reasons given for why were that candidates had:

1. Posted provocative or inappropriate photos, videos or information (39 percent)
2. Posted information about drinking or using drugs (38 percent)
3. Made discriminatory comments related to race, gender, religion (32 percent)
4. Bad-mouthed previous company or fellow employee (30 percent)
5. Lied about qualifications (27 percent)
6. Had poor communication skills: 27 percent
7. Been linked to criminal behavior: 26 percent
8. Shared confidential information from previous employers: 23 percent
9. Had an unprofessional screen name: 22 percent
10. Lied about an absence: 17 percent)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As someone who has worked for newspapers for years — and not just the Catholic press — I can tell you that pro-life journalists and those who harbor a more traditional, religious viewpoint are rare in most secular media outlets. There’s a silent assumption that opponents of gay marriage are ignorant bigots. — The Long Shadow of the Civil Jury – Anna Offit (DIERSEN: How much jury appeal do you have? From what I see, ever-increasingly, the more of the following that you are, the less jury appeal that you have, that is, the more likely that you will lose in court: Trump supporter, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, non-poor, gun owner, German American, draft avoider, past/present union member, past/present government employee, government retiree, non-dog owner, childless, and/or if your ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Others more explicitly ascribed justice considerations to hypothetical lay decision-makers through references to the “jury appeal” of their cases. In some prosecutors’ formulations, jury appeal assessments were likened to asking, “If I were a juror, what would I think?”— or a practice of weighing whether a “hypothetical juror would feel the case should not be prosecuted even if it legally could be.” To this end, talk of jury appeal allowed sources of concern or ambivalence to be discussed from a position of detachment. In some instances jury appeal was cited in decisions to modify investigations or decline cases altogether.)

My ancestors immigrated from what is now Germany to northeast Illinois during the 1840s and 1850s. They were less successful because they continued to speak, read, and write German. None of them earned a high school diploma until my father did in 1940. None of them earned a college degree until I did in 1970.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since the start of fiscal year 2020 (October 1, 2019-September 30, 2020), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has recovered more than $25 million in monetary relief and secured substantial equitable remedies from employers accused of engaging in unlawful race- and sex-based discrimination and harassment. In fiscal year 2018, the most recent period for which detailed enforcement data is available, the EEOC collected a total of $134 million on behalf of workplace harassment victims alone. While harassing conduct of a sexual nature is perhaps the most well-known form of workplace harassment, especially in light of the global #MeToo movement, it is far from the only kind that may expose an employer to significant risk of legal liability. According to the EEOC, more than 30% of the charges it receives each year include claims of unlawful harassment based on sex, race, disability, age, national origin, and religion (in that order).)
