With step increases, my GS-13 salary increased to $154,684/year in today’s dollars when I was 49. But my high school friend asked me to join him to take the postal employment test. Because I passed, I was a part-time postal employee while I attended UIC 1966-1968 and NIU in 1969. I graduated from NIU in 1970 and accepted the only job offer that I got, to be the Retail Sales Manager in a Firestone Store, a job that not really require a college degree. My Firestone Store boss rudely fired me because I had accepted that offer. Because I had to have a job, I accepted a job offer that I got from IRS. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment to help support my mother and brother would be approved.

It’s at www.gopillinois.com, and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself — DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to gopillinois.com. But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of interesting information — every day.)

— Hopefully, all the following Republican candidates on the ballot in my precinct will walk in today’s Wheaton Independence Day parade: Tracy, Bailey/Del Mar, Fioretti, Harris, Drew, Soloman, Oakley, Lewis, Vrankovich, Grasso, Noonan, Schiappa, Henry, Eckhoff, Michaud, Schultz, Quirk, and Helland. Since I became a Republican Precinct Committeeman in Wheaton in 1999, I have encouraged Republican candidates on ballots in my precinct to walk in the parades. In 2003, the day after all the announced Republican candidates for U.S. Senate (Cox, Kathuria, McKenna, Oberweis, and Ryan) walked in the parade, they all attended a picnic that I had organized in the Prairie Path Park in my precinct. More than 200 attended. U.S. Senate candidate Obama and his wife walked in the parade in 2004. In 2005, I started raising $2,500/year from Republican candidates, elected officials, and party leaders to help sponsor the parade and fireworks. Each year I would hand-deliver 500 parade flyers to the homes and businesses along the parade route. In 2007, I raised $2,000 on short notice for an elephant to walk behind Roskam in the parade. But my critics/opponents ended my fundraising in 2021 by having the Wheaton Park District stop parade and fireworks sponsorships. I should write about my critics/opponents. I would focus on those who continue to have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton.
