(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump made a rare appearance with Elon Musk, his most powerful adviser, in the Oval Office on Tuesday before signing an executive order to continue downsizing the federal workforce. The Associated Press reviewed a White House fact sheet on the order, which is intended to advance Musk’s work slashing spending with his Department of Government Efficiency. Musk said there are some good people in the federal bureaucracy but they need to be accountable and called it an “unelected” fourth branch. “The people voted for major government reform and that’s what the people are going to get,” he said. “That’s what democracy is all about.” It was Musk’s first time taking questions from reporters since he joined the Trump administration as a special government employee with sprawling influence over federal agencies. He’s also the world’s richest person and the owner of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Despite concerns that he’s amassing unaccountable power with little transparency, Musk described himself as an open book. He joked that the scrutiny was like a “daily proctology exam.” The White House fact sheet said that “agencies will undertake plans for large-scale reductions in force and determine which agency components (or agencies themselves) may be eliminated or combined because their functions aren’t required by law.” It also said that agencies should “hire no more than one employee for every four employees that depart from federal service.” There are plans for exceptions when it comes to immigration, law enforcement and public safety. Trump and Musk are pushing federal workers to resign in return for financial incentives, although their plan is currently on hold while a judge reviews its legality. The deferred resignation program, commonly described as a buyout, would allow employees to quit and still get paid until Sept. 30. Administration officials said more than 65,000 workers have taken the offer. Hundreds of people gathered for a rally Tuesday across the street from the U.S. Capitol in support of federal workers.)

(FROM THEW ARTICLE: A resolution before the DuPage County Board on Tuesday would remove the name of the late Congressman Henry J. Hyde from the county’s Wheaton courthouse and rescind previous approval for a monument there in his honor. The courthouse became the Henry J. Hyde Judicial Office Facility in 2010, three years after the Republican lawmaker from Wood Dale died at 83 years old. The new measure, if approved, would rename the building the DuPage County Judicial Office Facility. During an interview Sunday, County Board Chair Deb Conroy referenced the Hyde Amendment, legislation introduced by Hyde in 1976 that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for abortions, with some exceptions. “While Henry Hyde was a very well respected Republican elected official, the Hyde Amendment is very offensive to women, particularly women in Illinois,” said Conroy, a Democrat from Elmhurst. “I think overwhelmingly women in Illinois believe that all women have the right to health care, regardless of their ability to have private insurance.” Conroy said she told a Daily Herald editorial board in 2022 that she would take this action if elected chair. “I consider myself a woman of my word,” she added. “I very much value my bipartisan board, and we work very well together, which is why I put it off for two years.” If the full board approved the resolution, the Hyde family would receive a plaque that would be removed from the building. James Zay, a Republican county board member from Carol Stream, called the effort to remove Hyde’s name “narrow-minded.” “Henry Hyde did so much for DuPage County,” said Zay, who supported the renaming in 2010. “He brought so much funding into DuPage County for stormwater, for roads.” While the conservative Hyde may be best known for the amendment that bears his name, as well as his leading role in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, Zay noted that he also supported gun control measures like the Brady bill and assault weapons ban. “You can’t rewrite history,” he added. “My question is, who is next? Is it going to be Linda Kurzawa’s name at the health department building? Or Jack Knuepfer? Or Pate Philip?”

I was eligible because I had 25 years of federal service – 13 with GAO, 9 with IRS, and 3 with the Post Office. They succeeded in forcing me to retire in 1997 just before their “offer” expired. If I had not succumbed, I would not have been eligible for regular retirement until 2003. Things that I did that helped me survive 1993-1997 include a) earning a master’s degree in financial markets and trading in 1997, b) becoming a Certified Forensic Accountant in 1997, Financial Services Auditor in 1996, Government Financial Manager in 1994, Fraud Examiner in 1990, Internal Auditor and licensed CPA in 1981, and CPA in 1979, and c) earning master’s degrees in accounting from DePaul in 1980 and in business from Loyola in 1976. – Dave Diersen

He has three more available: Eco, Sport, and Wet/Snow. There are also three regenerative braking levels. Right now, Paul uses the second of the three. He finds the third too aggressive, and the first one not quite enough. The R/T starts at $61,590. Paul’s car is painted in a gorgeous After Dark paint, which is a $795 option. The car rides on the 20-inch Blacknoise aluminum wheels. Paul likes the steering wheel, the seating position, and the fact that he has everything at hand. It is, he says, a step up from the Challenger. In terms of engagement, though… “It’s not lifeless, it’s got some character and feel to it,” he says.
