In the 2018 primary, Ives drew the ire of Democrats and some Republicans alike for running an ad that was denounced as anti-immigrant, racist, sexist and transphobic. Casten may be well-prepared to face the likes of Ives, having gone through a tough cycle in 2018 when he unseated former GOP Rep. Peter Roskam in a contentious and high-profile race. This time, Casten has the advantage of being an incumbent in a district that’s veering left of its traditional GOP stronghold.
