https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2020/4/8/21207269/covid-19-coronavirus-risk-factors

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are a few clear risk factors, including age and underlying medical conditions. . .Potential risk factors need a lot more research: Are there some genetic variations that make one person more susceptible than another? And why are men dying in higher numbers than women?. . .Men could have more underlying health risk factors than women. They could also be engaging in more risky behaviors (perhaps greater rates of smoking and drinking alcohol among men are in play.) There’s also evidence women may have a stronger immune response than men (and are also more at risk for autoimmune diseases because of it), as the Washington Post explains. We just need more research here. . .We know Covid-19 is an illness that disproportionately impacts some groups more than others. Namely, older people are most clearly at risk. . .Underlying conditions like diabetes and heart disease appear to be risk factors. . .Seventy-eight percent of all people put into intensive care for Covid-19 in the US have had an underlying condition like diabetes or heart disease: 32 percent had diabetes, 29 percent had heart disease, 21 percent had chronic lung disease, and 9 percent had compromised immune systems. . .It’s also possible that exposure to air pollutants can play a role. An epidemiology team from Harvard recently reported increased risk of dying from Covid-19 is also correlated with exposure to air pollution.)

But with fewer and fewer professional reporters on the case, as print and broadcast media keep shedding staff to cut costs—i.e., Tribune cutbacks—public officials face less and less scrutiny, emboldening them to misbehave with impunity, laws and taxpayers be damned.)

— Critic Of China’s Coronavirus Response Is Under Investigation, Beijing Says – JOHN RUWITCH (DIERSEN: While I worked for the Democrats who ran GAO 1980-1997, IRS 1971-1980, and Post Office 1966-1969, I was critical of their discrimination against their employees who were Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who they had not promoted to GS-13 (currently $101,176) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $119,559) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $140,634) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $170,800) by age 40. Consequently, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $20,157 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

He had been acting Pentagon inspector general for more than four years, and before that was inspector general at the Justice Department for 11 years. Fine and his staff were caught by surprise when informed of the decision Monday, and were given no explanation for the move, according to U.S. federal officials. Trump cast his decision to remove Fine as merely cleaning house of Obama-era holdover appointments, saying those officials could be biased. “We have a lot of IGs in from the Obama era,” he said Tuesday. “And as you know, it’s a presidential decision. And I left them, largely. I mean, changed some, but I left them…But when we have, you know, reports of bias and when we have different things coming in. I don’t know Fine. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Adams County political organizations are forming alternative plans to move forward with the county caucuses set for April 15 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Adams Committee Democratic Central Committee announced it will postpone its caucus because of Illinois stay-at-home order, which is in line with the Democratic National Convention delaying its convention to August. The Democratic Central Committee will elect a new chairman after Chairman Keith Niewohner announced last year that he wished to retire as chairman but will remain a committeeman. Niewohner said it’s important that the committees are able to meet in-person to elect a new chairman, but that now is the time to focus “on the health, safety and well-being of ourselves, our families, the community and all of our momentum.” A date for a future caucus was not set. Dave Bockhold, chairman of the Adams County Republican Central Committee, said the party’s executive committee is seeking to host the caucus by mail. Letters have been sent to all precinct committeemen to get approval for the move.)

NATIONAL REVIEW
— Missing the Point of Plymouth Rock – David Randall (DIERSEN: From what I see, ever-increasingly, Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and RINOs hint/imply/argue/shout that if you are a Republican, the longer that your ancestors have been in America, a) the more that you have benefitted from their discrimination against minorities and against females, b) the more that you should pay the price of Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion, and c) the more reparations that you should pay.)
https://news.yahoo.com/missing-point-plymouth-rock-103005635.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Of course the Pilgrim landing at Plymouth Rock in 1620 explains American history. Of course the 1619 Project’s shoddy exercise in vituperation is meant to delegitimize America. John G. Turner’s recent article in National Review is an extended exercise in missing the point. Turner, a scholar of the history of American religion, and the author of a recent book on the Plymouth colony, surveys the debate about the New York Times’s 1619 Project with the traditional attitude of a liberal scholar — a facile resort to moral equivalence. Turner, positioning himself as the neutral and expert arbiter, frames the 1619 Project and its critics as equally mistaken — the one unduly obsessed with the 1619 arrival of blacks in Virginia as the foundation of an America built on slavery, and the other unduly obsessed with the 1620 arrival of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, as the foundation of an America built on liberty. Neither view, says Turner, is correct. Nor are views of America as built on liberty in 1776 or 1787. All the supposed foundations of liberty are compromised by racism or elitism: The proper way to understand America is to look at the endless details of Americans’ flaws, and not their sweeping aspirations. Turner’s entire approach is misguided.)

https://www.politico.com/states/new-jersey/story/2020/04/01/coronavirus-clampdown-the-virus-casts-a-shroud-over-american-civic-life-1270386
(FROM THE ARTICLE: States and cities across the country are cutting off access to open records and canceling in-person meetings, starving the public — not to mention lobbyists and other influence-brokers — of information as the coronavirus outbreak reaches into all corners of civic life. The public access shutdown comes just as local officials make unprecedented decisions about health care and how to disburse billions of dollars in federal aid. And it could undermine years of hard-won victories on access to information, some transparency advocates say, with now-temporary restrictions enduring even after this crisis has receded. Meetings that typically allow constituents to physically interact with their representatives have been suspended. Activists and lobbyists no longer have physical access to state lawmakers in some places. And many cities and states, their staff preoccupied with the virus, have halted or curbed their responses to public records requests. That is meeting pushback from some public transparency and good government advocates who warn that a public health emergency shouldn’t undermine the public’s access to the workings of government — particularly when that government is making critical, life-and-death decisions. One advocate drew a parallel to how some records vanished from public view after the Sept. 11 attacks. “Here’s another huge national event, this health crisis, that is probably also going to set new precedents for what’s going to be available or not and how people are going to respond or not respond based on the new normal,” said Daniel Bevarly, executive director National Freedom of Information Coalition. In-the-open policymaking has receded as elected officials hunker down.)

Normally, agencies may pay up to an additional 25 percent of salary, but with OPM’s permission they can pay up to 50 percent more. “Agencies may request that OPM waive one or more of these limits to address a critical agency need, such as agency programs or projects related to the President’s declaration of a national emergency concerning the COVID-19 pandemic,” OPM said, inviting agencies to make requests and providing a template for them to use.)

— Navy Secretary apologizes after calling USS Roosevelt’s fired captain ‘stupid’ – Tom Vanden Brook (DIERSEN: My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government hinted/implied/argued/shouted that federal employees were stupid and even worse things if they did not a) promote the Democrat Party platform and b) get rid of federal employees who were Republican, and especially those who were White, male, and/or non-veteran.)
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/04/06/coronavirus-navy-calls-fired-crozier-stupid-more-ships-test-positive/2955472001/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s unclear what prompted Modly’s sudden change of heart. However, hours earlier President Donald Trump waded into the controversy, saying at a White House briefing that he would “look into” Crozier’s case. In addition, powerful lawmakers called for Modly to be fired. And the Navy, shortly after Trump spoke, said it had extended the deadline for its investigation into Crozier’s letter. Trump called the letter a “mistake” that had worried families and showed “weakness.” But he said Crozier has had a “very good” career. “I don’t want to destroy somebody for having a bad day,” he said. Relieving an officer of command typically ends the officer’s career. After getting fired, they often take administrative jobs that lead to retirement. Trump said he was good at settling such issues and “can figure it out very fast.”)

https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/529040855-first-amendment-authority-pritzker-s-demand-that-paper-unpublish-story-extreme-measure
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A First Amendment authority says a demand by Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office that a central Illinois newspaper unpublish a story about the governor’s progressive income tax proposal was “highly unusual.” “Push back from a politician about facts being wrong or problems with the overall tone of the piece is what you normally see,” David Snyder, executive director of the First Amendment Coalition, told Prairie State Wire. “And if the paper did get the facts wrong, it should correct them immediately. But asking for a retraction of an entire article is a pretty extreme measure.” Pritzker’s office reportedly asked the Jacksonville Journal-Courier last month to unpublish a story by The Center Square about the governor’s plans to cut spending if voters in November shoot down his plans to shift from a flat income tax to a progressive one. The tax shift proposal, an amendment to the state constitution, is on the ballot this fall. In a follow-up story, The Center Square wrote that a spokesman for the governor, Jordan Abudayyeh, sent an email to the paper’s editor saying that the article was “flawed” and lacked context. “Ultimately, it would be prudent to take down this partisan content masquerading as news,” she was quoted as writing in the email. The Center Square said that a video accompanying story on its website shows Pritzker saying what he is quoted as saying in the story. “The governor’s office did not alert The Center Square to any errors in the Feb. 7 article, headlined ‘If voters reject progressive income tax, Pritzker promises to cut state spending, and no corrections were published,” the follow-up story said. Snyder, an attorney, said that only the example more extreme that he’s aware of is a private Swiss bank, Julius Baer Group, in 2008 getting a court order to shut down Wikileaks.org in a dispute over postings on the site by a former employee of the bank. The ruling was later overturned.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the midst of the COVID-19 craziness, it is alarming to recognize there are many who are willing to use our current health crisis for their own gain and/or agenda. As these snollygosters and media types grandstand, I cannot help but think of Rahm Emanuel’s infamous quote, “never let a crisis go to waste.” Ironically, Emanuel first used that phrase in 2008 during the nation’s financial crash and then again last week in response to our nation’s coronavirus emergency. Is it a repackaging of one of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, in which he writes “in the arena of action a threat or a crisis becomes almost a precondition to communication”? I’ll let you decide. The truth is, the board and staff here at IFI are deeply disturbed to hear the incessant petty partisan criticisms of the Trump Administration by political leaders and media pundits who only seem interested in stoking anxiety and exacerbating division among the American people. In that regard, Illinois’ Governor JB Pritzker has made a name for himself as one of the nation’s chief nitpickers over the last several weeks. In his first fourteen months as CEO of the state of Illinois, Gov. Pritzker hasn’t pursued policy solutions that would have helped Illinois prepare for a pandemic. Gov. Pritzker hasn’t tried to bolster Illinois’ rainy-day fund, which is now vitally needed to purchase respirators and other medical equipment. In fact, Illinois remains disadvantaged because of the billions of dollars in unpaid bills dragging us down. Instead, like a petulant child, Pritzker awaits bailouts from the federal government. For the most part, Pritzker’s political priorities have concerned the “social issues.” Working with the “Progressive” Caucus in Springfield, he followed through on his pledge to “make Illinois the most progressive state in the nation” for killing babies through abortion. He helped pass the mandate to indoctrinate young children through teaching positively about “LGBT” history in government schools (K-12). He helped pass an expansion of gambling and increased both gasoline taxes and the cost of doing business with a hike in the minimum wage. Pritzker’s involvement in getting recreational marijuana passed in the state cannot be over-emphasized. This foolish policy will only exasperate our current national/international health predicament, as marijuana consumption has been proven to suppress the immune system, leaving users more vulnerable to sickness. He did a great disservice to Illinois’ families, the healthcare system and first responders. BTW, who do you suppose will be paying for these unintended consequences of legal pot? Regarding the “stay-at-home” order, which has now been extended through April 30th, why are abortuaries, liquor and pot stores considered “essential businesses”?)

The court said its interpretation of the law would avoid a situation in which “an employee with an otherwise sterling record could be removed over a trivial incident.”)

Her husband fought the Germans during WWI. All my ancestors immigrated from what is now Germany to northeast Illinois (Crete and Grant Park) during the 1840s and 1850s. My uncles on mother’s side fought the Germans during WWII. My father would have fought the Germans during WWII if he had not been 4-F. I should write a book about those who by their words and/or by their actions have made it clear that they are anti-German American. I would focus on my Democrat superiors in the federal government and those who have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, and Illinois. I would focus on German-Americans who discriminate against German-Americans to curry favor with those who despise/hate German-Americans.)

— The Class of 2020 Was Headed Into a Hot Job Market. Then Coronavirus Hit. Internships evaporate, career fairs are canceled and some college seniors wonder if they should even bother looking for jobs – Kathryn Dill and Patrick Thomas (DIERSEN: What class were you in? I was in the class of 1970. What negatively impacted your job search? For me, it was my being draft bait. My father had died suddenly in October of 1969. Potential employers did not believe that my financial hardship draft deferment application to support my mother and brother in Crete would be approved. Further, potential employers were under tremendous pressure to hire minorities, females, and veterans. Consequently, I took the only job offer that got — retail sales manager for the Firestone Store in Chicago Heights. The job did not really require a college degree. Constructively, I was the store’s salesman. Advancement opportunities were limited and slow. The store’s manager did not approve of my demographics (draft avoider, German-American, and Protestant). He never would have hired me, but Firestone Stores headquarters forced him to take me.)

They’re still doing it more than 60 years later. – Ben Cohen (DIERSEN: When I was in high school, I was not viewed as being “college material.” Neither of my outstanding parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I just barely made into the upper 20% of my class. My ACT score was only 24. I was 1-A for draft notwithstanding the fact that my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease). I spent my junior and senior years in high school and the summer in between washing dishes in the basement of the S.S.
