Because civil service protections do not protect Republicans, I should have expected a) that in 1989, my Democrat GAO superiors would throw me off audits of IRS for the rest my GAO career which is what they did, b) that they would give me even worse job assignments, unfair performance expectations, unfair performance appraisals, and always rank me in the bottom half of my GAO coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes for the rest of my GAO career which is what they did, and c) that they force me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old which is what they did. If GAO had been unionized, the aforesaid adverse actions might have been prevented, but GAO did not unionize until 2007. Again, I should never have expected federal civil service protections to protect me.)
