The Illinois Republican Party (IRP) is controlled by a cartel of men and women who ignore the Republican Platform, support (either directly or indirectly) the killing of babies, and can by no means be called “conservative.” Do you have an interest in this one, perhaps last, window of opportunity to work some good in the IRP? On April 18, every county in Illinois will hold a county Republican Party convention. At this county convention, Republican precinct committeemen will fill two important party positions: 1. The chair of the county Republican organization 2. The IRP State Central Committee (SCC) member that represents that county The IRP is governed by the SCC, which consists of 18 members, one representing each of the state’s congressional districts. The SCC members are elected by a vote of the precinct committeemen within each congressional district. The SCC is a powerful group. Their purpose is to “establish, organize, and promote the operations of the Republican Party.” They determine which candidates will receive money from the IRP and also who will serve on the Illinois State Convention platform committee. If you are a precinct committeeman, we urge you to vote for a liberty-minded, pro-life candidate that adheres to the Illinois Republican Party Platform. If you are not a precinct committeeman, you can still help by appealing to your precinct committeeman to vote for a conservative, Platform-respecting candidate. If there is no liberty-minded, pro-life candidate in your district, we suggest you abstain from voting. A substantial undervote sends a compelling message that the base of the IRP is conservative and wants conservatives to direct the IRP. Here are the State Central Committee 2018 candidates conservatives can personally recommend. Each one is worthy of the base’s support. Be brave. Be bold. Your boldness will strengthen the weaker ones to do good.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Department of Homeland Security wants to track the comings and goings of journalists, bloggers and other “media influencers” through a database. The DHS’s “Media Monitoring” plan, which was first reported by FedBizOpps.gov, would give the contracting company “24/7 access to a password protected, media influencer database, including journalists, editors, correspondents, social media influencers, bloggers etc.” in order to “identify any and all media coverage related to the Department of Homeland Security or a particular event.” The database would be designed to monitor the public activities of media members and influencers by “location, beat and influencers,” the document says. The chosen contractor should be able to “present contact details and any other information that could be relevant including publications this influencer writes for, and an overview of the previous coverage published by the influencer.” The request comes amid concerns regarding accuracy in media and the potential for U.S. elections and policy to be influenced via “fake news.” The plan calls for the ability to track 290,000 news sources including online, print, broadcast and social media. Also, it would have the ability to track media coverage in over 100 languages, along with the “ability to create unlimited data tracking, statistical breakdown, and graphical analyses on ad-hoc basis.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A copy of the East Central Reporter landed in select mailboxes in 2016 with the look of a typical local newspaper. It had a community calendar. It listed high school sports statistics. And it contained an article about a statehouse candidate’s pitch to voters. But was that story news? Or was it a novel form of political advertising? Recently obtained documents and interviews show that an organization called Think Freely Media helped fund the operation that produced the article for the East Central Reporter’s website. As a nonprofit, Think Freely is forbidden by federal law from engaging in politics, and it has described the articles it funded as news. But State Board of Elections records also show a political committee, Liberty Principles, paid the same private company to publish the story in a print newspaper and mail it. That group, which state law says must spend its money on politicking, has labeled such content political ads. What these organizations have in common is one of the state’s most visible and controversial political figures, Dan Proft. Though Proft is known for backing conservative candidates for office through Liberty Principles, recent tax, business and campaign filings illuminate how other organizations with ties to Proft helped spread his political views through publications that showcase candidates he supports. It’s a situation that encompasses not only ethical questions about a modern tool of Illinois political warfare but also the national discussion over what constitutes “fake news.” Since 2015, thousands of articles have been published in more than two dozen print and online publications tied to Proft, who in addition to heading Liberty Principles has served as a consultant to Think Freely Media. The first articles were produced by a firm run by media entrepreneur Brian Timpone, a longtime friend of Proft’s who has frequently discussed Illinois politics as a guest on Proft’s morning radio show. Timpone’s firm, called Newsinator, also has a history of doing paid political work and offers marketing services to companies under the name Interactive Content Services. After Proft’s political committee paid Newsinator in 2016 to mail print versions of some publications to voters, the state elections board ordered Liberty Principles to identify such materials as political advertising more clearly in the future. But regulators did not impose fines, and since then, records and interviews show, Proft has doubled down on his media venture by teaming with Timpone to start a new private company, Local Government Information Services, that now runs the websites and publications created by Newsinator. I had worked for IRS since 1971 and she had worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions since 1970. In today’s dollars, IRS paid me $89,178/year. We used her savings for the down payment to buy 1017 East Harrison in Wheaton and we used the profit from the sale of my one bedroom condo in the Outer Drive East building to buy a new 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale and a new 1978 Chevy Chevette. I soon sold my 1962 Chevy BelAir and I continued to store my 1972 Corvette in my mother’s garage in Crete. I took graduate accounting courses at DePaul’s downtown building and Karen soon started taking courses there toward a bachelor’s degree in finance. Because of Money Magazine’s February 1978 4-page article on us, IRS had disallowed all the graduate business courses that I had taken at Loyola and all the graduate accounting courses that I had taken at DePaul. Eventually, I won a split decision in Tax Court. The judge imposed a new rule that you cannot deduct accounting courses until you are qualified to take the CPA examination. Randy Hultgren has fired a top aide after the staffer was found in a car last fall with a 17-year-old boy and no shirt on, according to multiple sources and a police report. Nick Provenzano, 56, was dismissed by Hultgren over the weekend, the sources said. Hultgren’s office declined to comment on the details of Provenzano’s firing. “Nick Provenzano is no longer with the office,” said a Hultgren spokesperson. The Hultgren spokesperson said the office only find out about the incident “late Wednesday and immediately placed him on leave before his eventual termination.” But through a Freedom of Information Act request, POLITICO obtained an Oct. 21, 2017, incident report from the city of McHenry Police Department in Illinois. That report shows police investigated Provenzano for public indecency and other potential criminal acts following the episode, but no charges were ever filed. The name of the teenager is redacted in the report. The report states that a homeowner became suspicious when she saw two men sitting in an SUV on a dead-end street with the lights off and called the police. After a police officer arrived, he approached the car and saw that Provenzano had no shirt on, although the other passenger was fully clothed. When Provenzano was questioned by the police about why he had removed his shirt, he said it was “hot.” Provenzano told the officer the two were “hanging out” and “talking about life.” Provenzano later told the officer that he “did not want to admit to anything, but stated that contact between him and [the teenager] was consensual in nature, that nobody was forced or coerced each other to engage in any acts they did not want to, and that he believed [the teenager] was eighteen (18) years old.” The teenager later told police he had met Provenzano on the gay dating site Grindr. The teenager said he was only 17, but the website changed his age to 18. The teenager said police interrupted them during the middle of their sexual encounter, according to the partially redacted report. Provenzano had removed most of his clothes at one point, the report states. After questioning by police, Provenzano was released without charges. He later hired a lawyer to respond to police inquiries, but Provenzano refused to be interviewed again. State prosecutors decided no criminal case would be filed against him. Provenzano was hired as Hultgren’s deputy district director in August 2016. Provenzano had earlier served as Hultgren’s field director during the 2012 and 2014 campaigns. Provenzano is a graduate of DeVry University with “training in electronics, computer technology and business management,” according to his candidate bio. He was paid more than $80,000 as Hultgren’s deputy district director last year, according to House disbursement records.
