CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Sanguinetti blasts Ives big time.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-20180206-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And Rauner’s running mate Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti separately called the spot “offensive and disgusting.” “I was just taken aback. I don’t think it speaks to policies at all, I just think it’s offensive to individuals,” Sanguinetti said. Sanguinetti and Ives briefly served together on the Wheaton City Council before Ives entered the Illinois House and Sanguinetti later became lieutenant governor. Sanguinetti said she and Ives are “not friends.” “The Jeanne Ives that you folks are seeing in that commercial, that sort of spirit, is the same Jeanne Ives that I have known for the last seven to eight years,” Sanguinetti said. “I saw it from the dais, I’ve seen it in my community and now all of you are getting a taste of it, and I’m hopeful that that will be rejected.”)
— Pritzker apologizes for remarks on African-American politicians, as rivals say he’s now unelectable – Rick Pearson, John Byrne and Monique Garcia (DIERSEN: What facts do your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that make you unelectable? My critics/opponents stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc. They hint/imply/argue/shout that if I had any kind of support, I would still hold the aforesaid positions. Further, they stress that unlike Rich Miller, no one pays me for my emails and my website contains no advertising.)

— Rauner gets backing over Ives from Cook County Republicans
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-cook-county-20180207-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cook County was important in the 2014 Republican governor primary, when Rauner prevailed by more than 27,000 votes over his nearest competitor, then-state Sen. Kirk Dillard. Rauner won the nomination by fewer than 24,000 votes statewide. Though the county is a Democratic stronghold in statewide elections, it also had the most Republican primary voters in Illinois that year. More than 168,000 people in Cook County voted for a GOP candidate for governor in the 2014 primary. Compare that to a little more than 92,000 in DuPage County, traditionally home turf for Republicans. (It’s also the home county of Dillard and Ives. Last time, Rauner won there too. The March 20 primary election’s dynamics are different this time, of course — it’s a one-on-one battle instead of a four-candidate field. . .Ives’ campaign put out a statement late Tuesday noting the candidate’s numerous collar county GOP township endorsements. “The taxpayers will defeat Rauner in March, the Democrats in November. And they will do that behind the charge of Rep. Jeanne Ives,” the statement read in part. The Cook endorsement announcement came as Rauner’s campaign for the first time unveiled a TV ad attacking Ives. In response, Ives called him “an unrepentant liar.”)

WGN RADIO
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: WGN RADIO promotes Chicago Tribune Political Reporter Rick Pearson. Who promotes you? My nasty/troubled/vicious critics/opponents in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and Illinois a) have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout. They have made it very clear that they will have their nasty/troubled/vicious operatives and dupes viciously destroy any individual, any organization, or any company that might promote me. I should write a book about my nasty/troubled/vicious critics/opponents.

CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEWS GAZETTE
— Ives’ strategist Dan Proft backing more than one horse – Tom Kacich (DIERSEN: I should write a book about “Republican” strategists who demonize me, who denigrate me, and who condemn me a) because I do not glorify and praise them, b) because I do not pander to them, c) because they cannot manipulate/dominate me, d) because I refuse to serve as one of their operatives or dupes, and/or e) because I refuse to give them money. They blame me for all of their problems, for all of your problems, for all of my problems, and for all of everyone’s problems. They blame me for all losses that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000. They will blame me for every vote that Ives/Morthland and Rauner/Sanguinetti get or do not get in the March 20, 2018 primary election.)
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2018-02-07/tom-kacich-ives-strategist-backing-more-one-horse.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Speaking of Ives Her appearance Saturday night in Champaign drew a crowd of about 50 people, none of whom included her Republican legislative colleagues from East Central Illinois. None of them has endorsed her, and it may be because she doesn’t spare anyone with her criticism. Take this example where she hit both Rauner and the 15 House Republicans who joined with Democrats last year to pass a state budget and end a long impasse. “You can make deals, but you cannot adjust and continually cave. He caved to pressure on the education bill. He caved to pressure on the budget bill,” Ives said of Rauner. “He made not a single phone call to get Republicans to hold off on that permanent 32 percent tax increase. He owns that tax increase. He caved, as did many of my colleagues. Many of them have been taken control of by lobbyists. It’s frightening down there. Frightening.” The only past or present Republican officeholders I saw at the Ives function were Savoy Mayor Joan Dykstra, Champaign County Board member Jim McGuire, Parkland College Board member Greg Knott and former county board member Scott Tapley, who is coordinating the Ives campaign in Champaign County. Ives also said the “entire Democratic ticket is like a bunch of socialists. They picked out the most extreme in terms of that. We think we have a fighting chance in this state to get out that message.” The most socially conservative candidate for governor since at least 2010, Ives insisted she can win in the fall. “When it comes to November, the reason we win is because my message is universal, and I can back it up with real bills and real action I’ve taken on the most critical issues in the state of Illinois which are property taxes, the tax burden overall and public corruption,” she said. Also, she knows how to pick up free publicity. Ives has spent little money on broadcast television in the Champaign-Decatur-Springfield market (just $13,948 at WCIA, according to records), but she got lots of free coverage earlier this week from her controversial TV ad attacking Rauner for his support of legislation benefiting transgender individuals, undocumented immigrants, abortion rights and funding for Chicago schools. “We’re happy to have them chatter among the media to raise my name i.d.,” she said. “Go ahead. Love it.”)

http://abc7chicago.com/politics/ill-gop-chairman-calls-for-ives-to-take-controversial-ad-off-the-air/3030306/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Appearing at Saturday’s gala for Equality Illinois, Gov. Rauner did not directly address the ad, but his presence and a $25,000 donation to the state’s LGBTQ civil rights organization did the talking. “Diana and I believe that fairness is in the DNA of the State of Illinois. The proof of that is in your work,” said Gov. Rauner at the gala. The governor was just one of nearly 100 elected officials at the event, which has become a veritable who’s who of Illinois politics. “LGBTQ equality is not a partisan issue. What we hope to hear from our speakers and our leaders is ‘We stand with you. Your full equality is consistent with the values of Illinois. We won’t go back,'” said Brian Johnson with Equality Illinois. Ives campaign stands by the ad, insisting that the commercial represents and quote, “a fair and accurate representation” of Rauner’s policy choices. It remains to be seen, whether pressure from the state’s republican leaders will change their minds. For now, a 30-second and 60 second version of the ad continues to run.)

One could ask which Rauner supporters are leading his administration’s efforts to drive out of the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) those who support the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks in the IRP platform.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Governor Rauner speaking tonight at the Equality Illinois Gala, did not address it publicly. Some have labeled it transphobic , sexist and racist. The chair of the Illinois Republican Party called on Ives to take the ad down and apologize immediately. All of this comes as Gov. Rauner made his first appearance ever at the annual Equality Illinois Gala. Rauner and his wife donated 25-thousand dollars to be platinum sponsors. The organization supports Civil rights work for the LGBTQ community. Mayor Emanuel and several Democratic candidates for governor were among the politicians packing the Hilton’s grand ballroom. Governor Rauner did not stop to answer questions from reporters and he was heckled a bit during very brief remarks. A spokesperson for the Ives campaign says Ives is traveling downstate today, and She is not pulling the ad, because she is not intimidated by Gov. Rauner and what she called his paid party mouthpieces.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Suburban Republicans backing primary challenger Jeanne Ives in her bid to unseat Gov. Bruce Rauner are defending the Wheaton lawmaker who faces intense criticism for a television ad that state party leaders and Rauner allies have denounced as racist and homophobic. Lawmakers on Saturday stood by their endorsements of Ives amid the backlash over the statewide ad that began airing this weekend, but suggested the spot would provide campaign fodder for her opponents who cast Ives as a divisive social conservative and a longshot in the March primary. . .State Rep. Barb Wheeler, a Crystal Lake Republican, called the ad cringe-worthy and ridiculous. She said Ives still has her vote, but urged her messages to stick to what Wheeler considers her political strengths as a fiscal policy wonk. “I have been in the General Assembly with her since 2013. And if I believed in my heart of hearts that she was a racist or a hater, I wouldn’t have supported her in the first place,” Wheeler said. “She is right on the issues. I don’t always agree with the way she messages.” Wheeling Township Republican Committeeman Ruth O’Connell argued the ad appeals to Ives’ conservative base. “It is going to create talk, and the ad will bring the attention to the voters, and I think a lot of them care about the issues she covered in the ad,” she said. . .The Ives’ campaign dismissed Schneider’s statement, calling the Illinois GOP an arm of Rauner’s campaign because the organization is almost entirely funded by Rauner, a wealthy former private equity investor. “Rauner betrayed Illinois conservatives. He and his paid-for mouthpieces don’t like his betrayals being illustrated and his radical left-wing social agenda being exposed,” campaign spokeswoman Kathleen Murphy said. Rauner signed a bill last year making it easier for transgender people to change the gender listed on their birth certificates. He has not signed a bill on restroom access for transgender individuals. The release of the ad comes as Rauner and Ives battle for endorsements in the suburbs. The Cook County Republican Central Committee votes on Monday on who to back in the gubernatorial race. . .State Rep. Tom Morrison, a Palatine Republican, said the ad was “jarring,” but meant to “stimulate conversation.” “That’s what campaigns are about,” said Morrison, an Ives supporter. “It’s discussing candidates. It’s discussing issues, and I think this ad will spark some discussions on specific bills cited in the ad.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-dupage-mobile-spay-neuter-vehicle-st-0126-20180202-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage County officials are thrilled that their animal care and control department soon will make use of a new mobile spay and neutering van. The 26-foot conversion vehicle will be outfitted with a number of features to allow veterinary services to be provided at remote locations, similar to a bookmobile or bloodmobile. “This is going to be a game-changer that allows us to save more animals and better serve the community,” said Dr. Barbara Hanek, administrator veterinarian. With ongoing concerns about pet overpopulation, a mobile spay and neuter vehicle can serve low-income residents who may not have the ability to drive to the animal care facility at the county campus in Wheaton. “Also, our spay and neuter program is free of charge for DuPage residents who qualify,” said Kristie Lecaros, humane initiatives and special projects manager. Valued at $250,000, the van is made possible by a donation from the Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy, which will be honored at the Feb. 27 county board meeting. “We’re an open admission shelter in the county,” said Brian Krajewski, chairman of the board’s animal care and control committee. “That means we take in every animal and try to find them a home. But we also do education, and this new van will help us to get out to many events, highlight animal rescues, and help us do some medical procedures like feral fixes, where we spay and neuter, microchip and vaccinate for rabies.” Free spay and neutering is available for all pets in DuPage County households where the owner has an Illinois LINK card that indicates low-income assistance. Officials said the van will be delivered in May. One side of it opens to reveal cages that may contain pets available for immediate adoption. Inside, the van will have two surgical tables, countertop work space and veterinary pharmacy supplies. “It’s also going to have a dental unit and an x-ray machine,” Hanek said. “We don’t even have an x-ray machine here at the main building. That’s a $50,000 piece of equipment right there.” The donation of $300,000 and a statement were facilitated by volunteer Amanda Yancey. “The Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy is a progressive think-tank for national animal welfare,” the donor wrote. “… Amanda has seen the improvements at DuPage County Animal Care & Control. To further the momentum, the exciting possibility of a specialty veterinary vehicle is seen as revolutionary for the animals of DuPage and beyond.” Hanek said veterinary medicine at shelters has shifted from a philosophy of addressing overpopulation with euthanasia “to now using more proactive measures like targeted spaying and neutering. That’s what this new van will help us do.” Hanek met with Kane County animal control officials who demonstrated the use of geo-coding to map locations throughout the county prone to feral and stray animals. “From that data, we can then determine the most effective areas where we can target our spay and neuter van,” Hanek said. “We want to be more proactive to provide our services in the areas where they’re needed.” A veterinary surgeon has been designated for the van, which will travel to a remote location at least once a week, officials said. “We should be able to do up to 30 spays and neuters per day,” Hanek said. “It all depends on the amount of time, whether it’s neutering a male cat versus spaying a large dog.” All pets under treatment are implanted with a microchip to identify the animal and the owner. Walk-ins may obtain microchips for their pets for $30. The goal is for police departments to be able to scan a chip and return the animal to its owner. “We also are very indebted to other rescue groups that have helped us in the past,” Hanek said. “With the new vehicle, we now can come out and do procedures for them. The whole idea is to fill a void for pet owners who can’t afford veterinary care and to lessen the burden on the animal shelter system.” DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin is an animal enthusiast who has two dogs, two cats and a horse, all spayed and neutered. “I think this is a great idea,” he said. “You’ve got to take the services to the neighborhoods, which is a much more effective way to get to the overpopulation of feral cats and other animals, particularly low-income areas. I encourage all the residents to participate and start looking out for the van.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lately Facebook appears to be making particularly aggressive moves against freedom of speech by conservatives. Particularly targeted are those who express views that offer facts and reasoning which contradict the specious Constitutional jurisprudence that demands respect for various gender claims, and equal public regard for a variety of sexual practices. Yet these demands deny or disparage God-endowed unalienable rights, attributes of humanity (like the sexual distinction for purposes of procreation) that are necessarily antecedent to all human laws and constitutions. Moreover, as the term “unalienable” plainly requires, people retain such rights no matter what human laws or edicts purport to gainsay them. . .Such are the forces now at work at Facebook and other such social networking businesses, whose commerce is, or else includes, communication. They mean to suppress speech that challenges any prejudices not their own. But isn’t the United States still governed by its laws and Constitution? Aren’t businesses that accommodate public exchanges and conveyances still subject to the Civil Rights Act? Instead of just publicizing Facebook’s growing abuses, isn’t it long past time for the victims of its attacks on free speech to seek such justice as that law provides? . . . Two things are urgently needed: 1) An avalanche of formal complaints to appropriate Civil Rights Offices if the US Government, and attendant lawsuits against Facebook’s attacks on freedom of speech; and 2) promotion of a competitive alternative(s) to Facebook committed to respecting the logic and purpose of the U.S. Constitution’s enumeration of freedom of speech in the Bill of Rights, as well as the Ninth Amendment’s language prohibiting any construction of the enumeration of rights that denies or disparages rights retained by the people. These latter include, foremost of all, the God-endowed, unalienable rights whose surrender entails the loss of humanity itself.)

RIPON ADVANCE
— Republican-led House oversight subcommittee, House colleagues urge IRS reform
https://riponadvance.com/featured/republican-led-house-oversight-subcommittee-house-colleagues-urge-irs-reform/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Among the witnesses testifying before the subcommittee were U.S. Reps. Peter Roskam (R-IL) and Jim Renacci (R-OH), who each outlined two bills they separately introduced and would like to have members consider. Rep. Roskam, for instance, last August introduced the Free File Permanence Act of 2017, H.R. 3641, which has been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee. The bill would require the U.S. Treasury Department to continue operating the IRS Free File Program and to work with state government agencies and the private sector to expand and enhance the program, which offers free commercial-type online individual income tax preparation and electronic filing services to the lowest 70 percent of taxpayers by income, according to the bill’s summary. “As an added bonus, the program actually saves the federal government an estimated $13 million a year because electronic filings are less expensive for the IRS to process than paper versions,” said Roskam. The bipartisan bill has 123 cosponsors, including subcommittee chairman Jenkins and subcommittee members Bishop, Walorski, LaHood, and Curbelo. Rep. Roskam also introduced the bipartisan Restraining Excessive Seizure of Property through the Exploitation of Civil Asset Forfeiture Tools Act, H.R. 1843, on March 30, 2017, which would limit IRS authority to seize the funds of law-abiding citizens under false pretenses, said Roskam. Multiple incidences uncovered by House Oversight Subcommittee members showed that the IRS has abused its authority “and was stealing legally earned funds solely because the owners ran afoul of structuring laws,” he said. An identical bill, S. 824, was introduced in the Senate by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) on April 4, 2017. Roskam’s bill passed the House on a voice vote in September and now awaits consideration by the Senate Finance Committee.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180130/BLOGS02/180139983/jeanne-ives-is-vulnerable-if-gov-rauner-dares-to-attack
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You want to avoid that fate, governor? Then quit whining about Mike Madigan and start acting like you would against any Democratic foe: Attack. Engage. Contrast your views and record with hers. There’s plenty of material to use, if Rauner chooses to do so. For instance, Ives told Crain’s editorial board last week she’d balance the state budget in large part by shifting the tax load to the people of Chicago and suburban Cook County. She’d do so by slashing aid to Chicago Public Schools under the state’s new formula, and by working to end the Obamacare expansion, which shifted to the federal government and, to a lesser degree, the state hundreds of millions of dollars a year in costs for caring for indigent patients at Cook County’s network of hospitals and clinics. Yes, that might mean a local tax hike, she conceded. Are you listening, Governor? Your opponent seems to favor a tax hike in Cook County, which, despite its reputation of being a Democratic stronghold, cast more than a third of the vote statewide in the 2014 GOP primary—a cool 428,345. When pressed if dropping Obamacare might also result in a reduction of health care to people without the funds to pay for it, Ives notes they run a nice voluntary dental clinic in DuPage County. Now, there’s a campaign plank that will sell with moderate voters, not only in Cook County but also in the five suburban collar counties, which provided another quarter of the statewide vote in the 2014 Republican primary. It has a real ring, doesn’t it? “Let ’em go to the free clinic.” Of course, most voters don’t know that Ives said that, because Rauner hasn’t told them. Over at the Tribune, Ives had another budget solution. If employee groups won’t cave with financial concessions, “lay them off,” she said. Right! Start with the state troopers and prison guards, and work your way down to university professors and doctors in the health department. The latter can use their free time to volunteer at the community clinic! Of course, Ives could spark another crisis like the one that left Illinois without a budget for two years. That certainly was a big success. Ives, at the Trib, also bragged about being one of a handful of lawmakers to vote against extending the state’s Edge payroll incentive program to woo jobs. I understand her zeal that lower taxes for everybody is the libertarian gold standard. But in a country in which almost every state offers something like Edge, unilateral disarmament would leave Illinois even worse off. Guv, you might consider communicating Ives’ stance on Edge to people who work for Amazon in Will County, Sears in Hoffman Estates and Ford at the Torrence Avenue plant, all of which received Edge. And you might cc: everyone who hopes to land a job at Amazon’s possible HQ2 here. There’s other material out there, material that could be effective not only in a general election against a Democrat, but in a primary against Ives. Sure, doing so would provoke some conservative voters who might not come home in November. But I suspect most of them already are mad over Rauner’s actions on abortion and so-called sanctuary cities. The question this fall: Would they rather have a liberal—or very liberal—Democrat in office? “I think Rauner’s folks are making a mistake. They need to take her straight on,” says one top party insider, who asks not to be named. In this predominantly blue state, that insider adds, the message ought to be: “A vote for Jeanne Ives is a vote for (Illinois House Speaker) Mike Madigan to draw the new legislative map that will be in place until 2031.” That source is right. You want to keep your job, Governor? It’s time to start acting like you mean it.)

The state rule, which went into effect Jan. 1, requires a condo association to provide a list of contact information—including mailing address, phone number and email address—on all unit owners to any owner who requests it. The rule is intended to “provide transparency,” said state Rep. Andre Thapedi, the chief sponsor of HB 189. His district runs from Park Manor on the city’s South Side west to suburban Hickory Hills.)

LOS ANGELES TIMES
— Bill to evade President Trump’s tax overhaul gets watered down – LIAM DILLON
https://www.latimes.com/politics/essential/la-pol-ca-essential-politics-updates-legislation-to-help-californians-evade-1517344326-htmlstory.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A bid to help Californians dodge the effects of President Trump’s tax plan has gotten a little less generous. State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) has changed his bill allowing those who donate to a new state-run nonprofit to receive relief on both their state and federal taxes. In the new version of the bill, those who give to the nonprofit will reduce their state income taxes by 85% of the donation plus receive a federal charitable deduction. Previously, De León was aiming to provide a dollar-for-dollar reduction in state taxes for those who donated. But tax law experts working on the bill with De León worried that amount could cause the federal Internal Revenue Service to crack down on the plan, and advised that a lower percentage was more legally defensible. “The proposed 85% tax credit … will give Californians the opportunity to fund programs they care deeply about while at the same time shielding them from some of the most egregious elements of Trump’s tax reform plan,” De León said in a statement. De León, who also is running for U.S. Senate, introduced his bill after Trump and the GOP-led Congress passed a federal tax overhaul that capped state and local tax deductions at $10,000, an amount that disproportionately affects high-tax states like California. De León’s measure aims to allow Californians who previously used the state and local tax deduction — primarily single- and joint-filers reporting annual incomes of $100,000 or more — to instead take advantage of the charitable deduction.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— QUESTION: If you are a Republican in Illinois, are the following legitimate reasons to NOT support a Republican candidate in a primary election? – Dave Diersen
https://gopillinois.com
— The candidate lacks education, experience, professional certifications, etc. needed for the office sought
— The candidate’s opponent(s) is doing better in the polls
— The candidate’s opponent(s) has more money
— You believe the candidate’s opponent(s) has a better chance of winning in the general election
— You believe that the candidate has little or no chance of winning in the general election
— The candidate rejects planks in the Republican Party platform and/or the Illinois Republican Party platform
— The candidate has said and/or done things that hint/imply/argue/shout that the candidate does not want your support
— Those who the candidate support and/or those who support the candidate have said and/or done things that hint/imply/argue/shout that the candidate does not want your support
— The candidate, those who the candidate supports, and/or those who the support the candidate hint/imply/argue/shout that they have a low opinion of you and/or those who share your demographics, values, priorities, etc.
— The candidate, those who the candidate supports, and/or those who the support the candidate demonize, denigrate, and condemn you and others who they cannot manipulate/dominate
— The candidate, those who the candidate supports, and/or those who the support the candidate have threatened you if you support the candidate’s opponent(s)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that any Republican candidate who I might support in contested Republican primary election is “too conservative” to win in the general election, and therefore, no Republican candidate should seek or accept my support in a contested Republican primary election.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner challenger Ives goes on attack during only forum of Republican governor race – Rick Pearson and Kim Geiger
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-debate-20180129-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ives, who was on the attack for nearly the entire time, offered a blunt assessment of Rauner’s anti-Madigan strategy. “He’s never going to have a chance,” Ives said. “Republicans across the state don’t trust him. He’s betrayed everything that we stand for.” Rauner repeatedly sought to paint a larger picture for Illinois during a second term and to look past Ives, a three-term Republican state lawmaker from Wheaton. He vowed a “revolution” using term limits and opposition to Madigan would take “power back from the corrupt insiders and (give) it back to the people of Illinois.” Ives, who’s not well known statewide and lacks the personal wealth of Rauner, used the forum to repeatedly attack Rauner’s credibility among GOP conservatives. She said fellow Republican lawmakers can attest to a lack of trustworthiness with the governor. Ives contended Rauner’s signature on legislation that expanded taxpayer-subsidized abortions for women covered by Medicaid and state employee health insurance demonstrated that all the governor accomplished in his first term was a “progressive social agenda.” “He told us he would veto the bill,” she said. He lied to a cardinal,” she said, a reference to Cardinal Blase Cupich. Rauner would not say what he told Cupich about the abortion legislation, but called Ives’ allegations “outrageous.” “There are a lot of politics swirling around the bill,” said Rauner, who repeatedly added that “the simple fact is I support a woman’s right to decide.” The governor said his choice to sign the bill was either to “follow what I believe or do politics.” But Ives said the March 20 primary contest was a referendum on “character and courage” and that by signing the bill, Rauner was following the “agenda” of his wife, Democrat Diana Rauner. “This is more false vicious attacks,” Rauner replied. “Madigan loves everything that you’re saying, everything that you’re doing.” Ives interjected frequently while Rauner answered questions, seeking to make the most of their only scheduled forum. Rauner repeatedly asked Ives to allow him to finish and at one point used one of his favorite condemnations, “such baloney,” to describe one of her attacks. Ives contended Rauner was “responsible” for the state income tax increase that was enacted over his veto and that he now was making “unrealistic promises” by calling for it to be phased out. Rauner said he “sure as heck did” work to block Republicans from ultimately supporting the veto override and said he was “devastated” when it and a state budget were enacted. The governor maintained that he expected federal court victories that would grant him the power to weaken the influence of unions, which are traditionally aligned with Democrats. “I’m not going to wait for Speaker Madigan to do it with me. I’m going to do it unilaterally,” Rauner said of his union-weakening efforts. “You watch us boom when we get the rest of the changes made in the court system, even if Madigan is still in power.” Rauner said if the courts rule against him, “We keep working, we keep changing, we keep fighting.” Ives, who has backed Rauner’s agenda taking on unions in the past, said her answer to dealing with public employee unions has been to fire workers who don’t accept conditions. “If you can’t impose your final best offer because the courts have blocked it, you start laying off people,” Ives said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Accusations of sexual harassment have felled dozens of executives, but in one quiet corner of the financial world, the #MeToo movement looks like a golden opportunity. Companies that offer money to plaintiffs in anticipation of future legal settlements are racing to capitalize on sexual harassment lawsuits. That is setting off alarms in some quarters because the industry, like payday lenders, has a history of providing cash at exorbitant interest rates to customers who need the money for living and sometimes medical expenses. The largely unregulated companies have operated with less public scrutiny than the rest of the litigation finance industry, which provides money to law firms to fund commercial lawsuits.)

I would not again be eligible to retire until I was 55 years old in 2003. They had made it very clear to me that if did not take their early retirement “offer” that expired on September 30, 1997, they would kill me figuratively if not literally.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180128/analysis-delaying-retirement-can-have-remarkable-benefits
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You’re 49 years old, you make $113,000 a year and you’re starting to get worried about financing your retirement. You could take the drastic step of upping your retirement savings by 10 percent of your salary. Or you could achieve the same result by retiring two years and five months later than you had been planning to. This is one of a number of such comparisons in a remarkable new National Bureau of Economic Research working paper, “The Power of Working Longer,” that I imagine is going to become a staple of retirement advice in the coming years. . .The basic result is that delaying retirement by 3-6 months has the same impact on the retirement standard of living as saving an additional one-percentage point of labor earnings for 30 years. The working-longer effect is strongest for those with the lowest incomes.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Is a fair immigration compromise possible out of failed Schumer shutdown? – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-shutdown-immigration-kass-0124-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Dreamers are in limbo through no fault of their own, trapped between two cultures, with no place of their own to legally call home. Yet opinion polls show that much of the America public is sympathetic to their plight. So let the Dreamers stay. Those who are in criminal gangs or have violent criminal records have no right to be here. But the others, sure, why not? It would be quite easy to protect the Dreamers and their parents, except for the politics. Democrats want them as votes. Republicans are worried this could tip elections. So why not take the politics out of it? Here’s a possibility to consider: Let Dreamers stay — given permanent work and resident status — but not citizenship and voting rights. Conferring something as precious as citizenship upon people as a reward for their parents’ breaking the law isn’t the right way to go about this. If they want to become American citizens and vote, they’d be free to leave and attempt to re-enter the country as legal immigrants. If protecting Dreamers is the issue, then you’ll agree with me. But if weaponizing the Dreamers for the next election is your plan, then you won’t. And what about their parents, who crossed the border illegally and who worry about being deported? We can protect them, too, with some reasonable amnesty. Why not give them permanent work status, like green cards? But no welfare. Yes, you read that correctly.)

— Illinois Lawmakers Explore Tax Workaround – Cole Lauterbach (DIERSEN: Why not just cap real estate taxes at $10,000 per home?)
http://www.altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=258980#.WmhmRIzR-M8
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rather than working to lower one of the nation’s highest property tax burdens, some Illinois lawmakers want to sidestep the federal tax reform bill by allowing for donations to government. One bill would create the Illinois Excellence Fund. It would allow taxpayers to donate and receive a tax credit for the exact amount. This shuffling of money back and forth would allow a taxpayer to deduct that amount on their federal taxes, effectively thwarting the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions put in place by the tax reform bill passed last month. The state treasurer can then use that money as he sees fit. “[The SALT deduction cap] sort of came out of nowhere,” said state Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Northbrook. “This is trying to offer a solution to give tax relief to the middle class.” The bill has a populist tone, appealing to the cries of high property taxes across the state. Nearly all of the current sponsors of the bill are likely to face a challenging re-election effort this November. Carroll said he expects the Internal Revenue Service would object to such a law. “They’re not likely to take it lying down,” he said. The IRS classifies a charitable donation as “voluntary and is made without getting, or expecting to get, anything of equal value.” Being a federal tax deduction as well, the state-bound donation would actually turn into a money maker. In addition to a 100 percent credit from the state, the donor would get up to 37 percent of that donation back in a federal write off. The bill would also allow a county to set up a similar charity, which could cause different issues. Local taxes are devised in reverse compared to state and federal taxes. A taxing district sets percentages based on a target revenue number and then properties are taxed at that percentage of the assessed value of their homes. State Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, said in an online post that the sponsors would tell counties that “they can set up a fund to accept donations to be used for undefined charitable purposes in exchange for a reduction or elimination of your property tax bill, which will either raise taxes on everybody else or destroy the budgets of every school district and taxing body in the County.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pollak questioned Marshall’s prediction of future voting trends among Hispanics. Americans originally from Mexico and Central America do not typically transition toward support for conservatism or the Republican Party, he said. . .Pollak challenged narratives framing DACA recipients as wholly Americanized, noting DACA-amnesty movement’s expression of hostility toward America and alignment with Mexican nationalism. “I’m again asking, for people who want to do something for DACA beneficiaries, for people who say that they’re Americans, why can’t they find a public face to this movement who at least appeals to Republicans or conservatives?” asked Pollak. “I’ve got to tell you, I was open to the idea of this DACA thing until I started covering some of these demonstrations, and you see the Mexican flag, and you see the hostility toward Republicans, the hostility toward America; and you ask yourself, ‘We’re being told these are just like other Americans, but they’re so radical, or at least they’re being led by radicals, why would we want them as fellow citizens?’ They don’t seem to be want to be part of a broader American community. They want to change that community. I mean, I think it’s a serious problem for anybody who wants to legalize 700,000 or 800,000 DACA recipients. . .Asked to address the concerns of parents whose children has been killed or murdered by illegal aliens, Marshall broadly called for more effective deportation measures to remove illegal aliens who “commit crimes.”)

PUBLIUS FORUM
— You Can’t Be Both a Liberal AND an American at the Same Time – Warner Todd Huston
http://www.publiusforum.com/2018/01/23/cant-liberal-american-time/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Liberals live in America, but they don’t love America. So, it’s not a surprise that they have an affinity for law breaking illegal aliens. After all, liberals don’t care about our laws or our sovereignty any more than transient illegals who come to the U.S. only to use it for its freebies and welfare, or to get a job to make a quick dollar to send back to their home country. These transient illegals don’t have any more interest in being an American than liberals do. So, when liberals fight for illegals, understand that they are doing so not out of love, but hate. Indeed, the modern Democrat Party is the biggest hate group in American history. Today’s liberals are all about hate. They hate democracy, they hate the Constitution, they hate white people, they hate capitalism, they hate democracy, they hate republican government, they hate religion, they hate the family structure, they hate guns, they hate history, they hate freedom of speech and liberty… in short they hate everything about the U.S.A. and you can’t love a place that you hate so thoroughly. In fact, the only thing they love about America is their assumption that they can “do whatever they want,” a concept they treat with licentiousness and wanton instead of the virtue and probity the founders hoped Americans would observe. It might seem a natural progression, this party now having drifted to its logical extremes. Born of a hate for the equality of negroes, the Democrat Party morphed into a party that hates America itself as the nation struggled with the post Civil War reconstruction era.)

— Is a Medicaid work requirement fair? – Editorial
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-edit-medicaid-rauner-work-trump-20180116-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this month, Kentucky made Medicaid history: It will now require some of its Medicaid recipients to work or risk losing benefits. Critics say this 20-hours-per-week rule is a draconian plan to toss people off the rolls. Let’s talk about that. Kentucky’s plan is flexible: Recipients could meet the requirement through volunteer work, job training, searching for a job, taking classes, or caring for someone elderly or disabled. Pregnant women, full-time students, the medically frail, the homeless and people who aren’t healthy enough to work will be exempt. . .Illinois, like almost every state, struggles to control rising Medicaid costs. You’ll remember that Obamacare not only offered a way for the uninsured to buy coverage, but also hugely expanded Medicaid beyond its traditional role of helping the neediest Americans afford health care. Illinois added hundreds of thousands of people to the rolls, many of them able-bodied adults — and Washington, not Illinois taxpayers — paid almost all of the new costs. As a result, 1 in 4 Illinoisans now is a Medicaid beneficiary.)

— Rauner’s new take on federal tax overhaul – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-chicago-riverwalk-noise-proposal-20180122-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this year, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner appeared on a Joliet radio station and said the GOP-led tax overhaul in Washington was “punishing” to the middle class for capping the deduction of state and local taxes at $10,000. But late last week, the governor unveiled a new “point of view” blog on the state website. He lauded the new federal tax law and said it means “tax relief is coming for the vast majority of Illinois families and businesses starting in 2018.” It’s the latest of shifting positions Rauner has had on Republican efforts in Washington. The governor previously declined to discuss his thoughts on changes to the tax code, saying he had “no obligation to comment on every possible policy change in Washington.” In his new blog post, Rauner said: “Members of Illinois’ middle class will keep more of their hard-earned dollars as a result of the federal tax changes.” Rauner said seven out of 10 federal tax returns in Illinois do not itemize deductions and will be able to take advantage of a doubled standard deduction and lower tax rates. He said “most families who itemize their returns will also see lower taxes,” even with the cap on state and local tax deductions and a $750,000 limit on mortgage interest for new home sales. If anything, Rauner said he sees the new federal tax law as sending “a clear message to the Illinois General Assembly: Get busy reducing state and local taxes.” Rauner has long been rebuffed in calling for freezing and making it easier for citizens to reduce local property taxes. And he’s also called for a rollback of the state income tax hike enacted last year.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hobbes cited the spiraling costs of health care, housing and education that affect his generation. He drew attention to stagnating wages, the rise of lower-quality contracting work that has replaced jobs with real benefits, the expensive real estate and cost of living required to live in the highest growth cities like San Francisco, Seattle and New York, and the right-leaning attitude toward more personal responsibility that has shifted significantly over the past two decades. In addition, Motley Fool points out that millennials are delaying life events such as marriage and home ownership because of money uncertainty. When adjusting for inflation, the average worker in the 24-36 age group earns $10,000 less than their parents’ generation did at the same age, which is roughly 20 percent less purchasing power. Many younger workers (66 percent) are contributing to an employer-sponsored retirement plan, but at lower rates than older generations, and that’s largely because of limited earnings and student debt, Motley Fool reports. The average student debt for a millennial is double that of the previous generation, Motley Fool notes. And, according to a T. Rowe Price study, nearly half of millennials expect to work at least part-time in retirement.)

http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20180121/their-view-is-civics-still-taught-in-our-schools

So glaring was it — about the most basic elements of government, from its three branches to the separation of powers to the Bill of Rights — that we wondered if civics is even being taught anymore in America’s schools. If so, those lessons were lost in Louisiana.)

http://nprillinois.org/post/call-transparency#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The intent of disclosure, of course, is to alert voters to economic interests that could pose a conflict as a public official carries out his or her duties. But identifying such conflicts “is a huge gray area” under the current rules, says Sarah Brune, the campaign’s executive director, because the filings are so vague. What’s needed, she says, is more detailed disclosure, so that the media and the public understands what someone’s interests are. Specific changes the campaign is proposing include requiring filers to disclose the names of businesses and investments with ties to the individual, along with the degree of ownership and the actual income received. Also, professionals should be required to provide the names of individual clients from whom they’ve received more than $5,000, unless barred by confidentiality rules, rather than simply the types of services provided and the nature of the businesses served. As a hypothetical, Brune notes a candidate now can report simply getting more than $5,000 for professional services on behalf of an energy company, when in fact the individual might have been paid $500,000 by Exelon.)

GOVERNING
— The 6 Most Dysfunctional States Then and Now In 2009, Louis Jacobson ranked the states with the worst leadership and policy challenges. Almost a decade later, what’s changed? – LOUIS JACOBSON
http://www.governing.com/topics/politics/gov-six-most-dysfunctional-states.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The only state from the 2009 list that has remained in serious trouble is Illinois. Gov. Bruce Rauner hasn’t committed any serious ethics violations. Rather, the problem has been relentless gridlock between Rauner, a Republican, and the Democratic-controlled legislature. In fact, Illinois’ situation may actually have worsened in some ways since 2009. The state went without a full budget for more than two years, and it remains in fiscal trouble, with over $15 billion in unpaid bills and a massive unfunded pension liability. “This has made everything significantly worse — fiscal, social, economic and civic trust, [as well as] confidence and engagement,” says Kent Redfield, an emeritus professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield. All of this has all occurred at a time when Illinois’ policy challenges have grown, Redfield adds. These include “a weak, narrow revenue structure and insufficient tax rates, overspending and lack of priorities, a negative business climate, declining population, fiscal stresses for higher education, an aging state workforce, deteriorating infrastructure, state and local pension debt, and ineffective public service delivery at the state and local level,” he says. The one silver lining for Illinois is that the two sides did manage to enact a compromise budget last year — a significant, if belated, step forward. Still, Illinois would be a clear candidate for a new list of the nation’s most dysfunctional states. What other states might contend for this dubious honor?)

CBS NEWS
— Illinois governor believes David Duke is a racist, spokesman clarifies – AP (DIERSEN: How soon, if not already, will the Democrat news media in Illinois demand that all those on March 20, 2018 Republican primary ballots in Illinois a) identify all those who they believe are racists and b) explain in detail the criteria that they use to deem someone a racist?)
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/illinois-governor-believes-david-duke-is-a-racist-spokesman-clarifies/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: After fumbling the answer to a question about whether a former Ku Klux Klan leader is a racist, the campaign of Republican Bruce Rauner on Tuesday clarified the governor’s opinion of David Duke. During a radio interview on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Rauner was asked if President Donald Trump was racist following reports he used vulgar language to refer to African nations. Trump allegedly also questioned why America would want to accept more immigrants from Haiti. Rauner repeatedly declined to directly answer, saying “that language has no place in our political conversation.” When WVON-AM host Charles Thomas on Monday asked if Duke is a racist, Rauner would only respond “we have racism in our society.” “We have got to come together to change our system,” Rauner said. On Tuesday, Rauner campaign spokesman Justin Giorgio sought to clarify those comments. In a statement, he said Rauner “believes that David Duke is a racist.” Democrats were quick to seize on what they characterized as Rauner’s attempt to “mince words.” “Instead of having a spine and standing up for what’s right, Rauner dodges even the most basic of questions to avoid giving Illinoisans the answers they deserve,” said Jordan Abudayyeh, spokeswoman for Democratic governor hopeful J.B. Pritzker. Also on Tuesday, Duke spoke about Rauner’s initial failure to call him a racist. “Probably at some point, he’s heard about David Duke, and deep down in his soul, something’s happened inside of him and he knows that I am not really a racist in the sense that I want to oppress and oppose other people,” Duke told the Chicago Tribune. Sen. Kwame Raoul, a Chicago Democrat running for attorney general, cited King when he noted Rauner’s failure to call Duke a racist. “Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter and Bruce Rauner’s inability to clearly state that David Duke is a racist is pretty damning,” said Raoul, the son of Haitian immigrants.)
