NORTHERN PUBLIC RADIO
— House Democrats Hope To Keep Gun Dealer Licensing Measure Afloat – SAM DUNKLAU (DIERSEN: Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes want those like me who send out emails concerning government and/or political issues to be licensed. Of course, they want to dictate the licensing requirements. Of course, I would fail to meet those licensing requirements. I do not have a degree in journalism. No one pays me to put GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and send them out. No one pays me to receive the emails. The emails contain no advertising or pictures. I do not falsely claim to be nonpartisan. The Illinois Republican Party, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), and many who paint themselves as being religious, conservative, and/or Republican leaders to not endorse the emails or promote the emails. Individuals, organizations, companies, and governments that have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois refuse to keep diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists and do everything that they can a) to stop me from sending the emails out and b) to stop everyone from reading the emails. Extremely few individuals, organizations, companies, governments, etc. come to my defense. I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, MTRCC webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes blame me for their problems, blame me for your problems, blame me for my problems, and blame me for everyone’s problems.)

— Rauner’s Uphill Climb To A Second Term – CHARLES N. WHEELER III (DIERSEN: Does Rauner really want Ives a) to vote for him, b) to endorse him, c) to campaign for him, and/or to otherwise help elect him? Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. I should write a book about “conservative” and “Republican” candidates who really do/did not want me a) to vote for them, b) to endorse them, c) to campaign for them, and/or d) to otherwise help elect them. Officially they say that I am “too conservative,” but unofficially, under the table, they stress my demographics and hint/imply/argue/shout that I am a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse thigs. Should I sue them? My critics/opponents, their operatives blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all defeats that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000, but especially defeats that Republican statewide candidates, DuPage countywide candidates, DuPage County District 4 candidates, Milton Township candidates, and Wheaton candidates have suffered.)
http://nprillinois.org/post/rauners-uphill-climb-second-term#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In contrast, Ives has yet to make up with the governor, and the hard feelings are clear. “I’m a Republican. I’ll vote for him, but I will not endorse him,” the Daily Herald reported. “I will not campaign for him… Maybe if he takes out a million-dollar ad buy and admits he lied about me, maybe we’ll talk.” When WBEZ reporter Dave McKinney asked Ives a few days after the primary who would be a better governor, Rauner or Pritzker, Ives took 40 seconds– an eternity in radioland– to finally say “Rauner.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Resistance to California’s new sanctuary city laws grew this week as Orange County voted to join a federal lawsuit trying to block the laws, and the county’s sheriff said she will post information on every inmate’s release so the Homeland Security Department can see if there is anyone it wants to deport. The Who’s in Jail database could provide a model for other law enforcement agencies chafing under SB54, the law that took effect this year prohibiting police or sheriffs from informing federal agencies when illegal immigrants are to be released. By posting the entire list of inmates and release times, the department says, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can get the information without the sheriff’s office having to communicate specifically.)

My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government were beyond furious when I got almost 3 years of full-time Civil Service credit when I paid the Civil Service Retirement System 7% of the salary (plus interest) that the Park Forest Post Office paid me while I was a part-time employee there 1966-1969.)
https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/news/local/2018/03/27/kilmer-bill-federal-retirement/447341002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But when he started to plan for retirement, he learned the years that he worked as a temporary employee didn’t count toward it because of a change in the federal system that went into effect the year he was hired at the shipyard. Under the new system, employees who transitioned into full-time positions could no longer retroactively contribute to their retirements for the time they worked as temporary employees, although they had been able to do so under the previous system. As a result, Hodge is now witnessing other employees retire who were hired at the shipyard as permanent employees after he started there. He must either work longer or retire early by the government’s standards with penalties to his benefits. “It’s hard to keep a good attitude, but as a manager I do it,” Hodge said. “We’re starting to see more people leave and it’s very frustrating.” After seeking out other avenues for assistance without result, Hodge and a few other shipyard workers sought help from U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer. After learning about the complexities of Hodge’s case, Kilmer said he saw an opportunity to right what he says is a wrong.)

http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2018/03/prospects-unclear-trumps-1-billion-performance-fund/147008/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The omission of one White House management proposal from the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill for fiscal 2018, approved by Congress and signed by President Trump last week, could serve as a bellwether for the administration’s plans to transform the federal workforce. The spending package includes a number of provisions that specifically prohibit agency leaders from enacting plans to downsize or reshape their organizations without consulting Congress. And totally absent from the more-than 2,000-page document was the White House’s proposed $1 billion inter-agency performance fund, which the White House wanted to enact this fiscal year. That fund would be used by agencies for designing programs like performance-based pay and to pay bonuses for individual high performers across government.)

In each case, President Donald Trump cast aside years of Republican orthodoxy – and most of the party followed right along. The raw, undefined brand of populism that Trump rode into office is now hardening into a clearer set of policies in his second year, remaking the Republican Party and the country on issues ranging from trade and immigration to spending and entitlement programs.)

http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20180324/bernard-schoenburg-rauner-says-he-remembers-but-wont-yet-name-computerless-office
(FROM THE ARTICLE: While Democrats elected members of their state central committee in the primary, members of the GOP’s state committee will be elected by precinct committeemen at county conventions on April 18. And a race is shaping up in the 13th Congressional District. DUSTIN PETERSON, 37, of Clinton, an independent insurance agent who has been DeWitt County GOP chairman since 2014, is taking on incumbent member FRED FLORETH of Springfield, a lawyer finishing his first four-year term in the party post. “I’m not running against Fred, I’m running more just to try to expand my role with the Republican Party, and try to learn more and be more involved and try to, for lack of a better word … get a little more of a youth movement in there,” Peterson said. Peterson said he was neutral in the governor’s primary, has supported Rauner in the past and supports him in the general election. “Hopefully we can all come together as a party,” he said. Floreth, who turns 62 this weekend, put on an impressive campaign back in 2014 when he defeated an incumbent on the central committee, JERRY CLARKE. The 13th includes all or parts of 14 counties. Floreth, who supported Rauner in the primary, also says the party must come together after last week’s primary. He said he knows there some profound disagreements in the party, as illustrated by the showing of Rauner’s primary opponent, state Rep. JEANNE IVES. But he said all in the party “would have to conclude Governor Rauner is by far the better option” to run the state than Democratic candidate J.B. PRITZKER. Floreth says he thinks he has accomplished goals he set when he ran four years ago, including improving the experience of precinct committeemen at the state convention through allowing more say in policy and helping keep information flowing between the central committee and local party officials. He noted that he sends out a newsletter at least every other week, and helped improve training for precinct committeemen.)

ALTON DAILY NEWS
— Rauner Still Claims No Social Agenda – Greg Bishop (DIERSEN: If that is true, than Rauner should happily sign a “Contract with Illinois Republicans” in which he would agree to take no actions against the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform.)
http://altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=262334#.WrdmJcuKSM8
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In starting his post-primary re-election campaign, Gov. Bruce Rauner said Thursday he still doesn’t have a social agenda, but critics disagree. During a campaign stop in Springfield two days after narrowly winning the Republican nomination, Rauner said he has no social agenda, something the wealthy political newcomer maintained before being elected as a Republican in 2014. “You’ve never ever seen me or heard me or watched me advocate on social issues. I’ve never done it,” Rauner said. “I advocate on lower taxes, more jobs and ending corruption.” State Rep. David McSweeney, who has called Rauner a failed governor, said Rauner approved more abortions to be paid for by taxpayers and a measure that prohibits law enforcement from detaining someone based solely on that person’s immigration status. “He does have a social agenda,” McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said. “He signed [House Bill] 40. He signed [Senate Bill] 31, which definitely is a sanctuary state bill.” McSweeney said SB31, also known as the TRUST Act, prohibits law enforcement from detaining someone based solely on that person’s immigration status. “It’s been a very big issue up in my area, in Lake County and McHenry County, where there are real examples of people who are being let out of jail even though the federal government wants them detained,” he said.)

http://qconline.com/news/local/each-rauner-vote-worth/article_d45919eb-7c42-5807-a671-c1f699442e41.html
— Raise your hand if you voted for neo-Nazi (DIERSEN: Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. Are you a Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain? How many voters in your precinct asked you about the candidates on the March 20, 2018 Republican ballot in your precinct? None of the 504 registered voters in my precinct asked me about the candidates on the March 20, 2018 Republican ballot in my precinct. Sadly, disgustingly, and outrageously, that is not surprising. Since 1999, those who dominate the Milton Township Republican Central Committee, the DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and the Illinois Republican Party have done everything that they can to discredit me with the voters in my precinct. Officially, they hint/imply/argue/shout that I am “too conservative,” and because of that, candidates that I might promote in primaries are “too conservative” to win general elections. But from what I see, having lived in my precinct since 1984, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout behind my back, under the table, and below the belt at the voters in my precinct and at everyone else that I am a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things. I should write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes. Maybe I should sue them.)
http://qconline.com/opinion/editorial/raise-your-hand-if-you-voted-for-neo-nazi/article_e2c4d73e-6884-5df2-b165-711325137bd1.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It wasn’t democracy’s finest hour. On Election Day, the sole Republican candidate for the U.S. House in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District was a Holocaust denier and neo-Nazi. And he got more than 20,000 votes. Ugh. Ideally, Arthur Jones would have received no votes because he deserves no support. But even one vote – his own – would have been enough to win Tuesday’s primary because he ran unopposed. Instead he got 20,458. The Cook County Clerk’s Office reports that 70 percent of suburban voters in the district pulling a Republican ballot checked his name. We blame a lack of situational awareness. Republicans didn’t bother to recruit a legitimate candidate because the district is gerrymandered to elect a Democrat. So Jones waltzed in and now is set to run on their ticket in November against incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski. This embarrassment is on Republicans. Let both parties stay awake during future filing periods to prevent unsavory characters from hijacking their good names. Most voters didn’t intend to support Jones, we’re certain. They voted the party line and automatically filled in the box next to his name. Why research an unopposed candidate? We wish they had paid more attention to news reports. If they feel a little chagrined, they ought to. The lesson here is democracy is imperfect. But it’s also self-correcting, 3rd District residents. This November: Vote Lipinski. All of you.)

While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. (FROM THE ARTICLE: An alarming 70% of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Experts have crunched the numbers to identify how much you should have saved at each age milestone for a comfortable retirement. By age 30, aim to have the equivalent of your annual salary saved. Every five years, increase this in single increments: By 35, you should have twice your annual salary saved and by 40-years-old you should have three times. There were 82,943 Democratic ballots cast countywide during the primary, according to unofficial results, compared to 72,843 by Republicans. DuPage wasn’t the only place to experience the shift: Democrats in Lake and Kane counties also pulled more ballots than Republicans. That turnout has the DuPage Democratic Party talking about a “Blue Wave” on its website and Chairman Robert Peickert saying the party may abandon the idea of focusing on only a few county board races. “Democrats are very energized,” Peickert said. “I think they are ready to make a big move in November nationally, statewide and here in DuPage.” . . . “We projected we were going to be way down,” said Brian Krajewski, chairman of the DuPage Republican Party. “We didn’t have many contested races.” Krajewski said there also are indications that many Republicans pulled Democratic ballots to vote against one of the governor candidates. “They were pulling Democratic ballots because they didn’t want J.B. PEORIA JOURNAL STAR
— Winning back Ives supporters will take time – Doug Finke
http://www.pjstar.com/news/20180324/statehouse-insider-winning-back-ives-supporters-will-take-time
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The dust from the primary election has had a chance to settle a bit, but one thing seems clear: Gov. Bruce Rauner will have his hands full trying to win over supporters of Rep. Jeanne Ives. Rauner’s going to need her supporters in November if the predictions come true of a huge Democratic turnout. He may need to make a more public display of soliciting their support than he has so far. About the only positive thing Ives has said so far about Rauner since election night is that she would vote for him in November because he is a Republican. She said she would not endorse him or campaign for him. And then there was the post-election interview she did with WBEZ where she was asked if Rauner or Democratic challenger JB Pritzker would make a better governor. Forty seconds of silence followed before Ives uttered Rauner’s name. Was it a kiss of death? We’ve now gone through the first election since the General Assembly broke a two-year deadlock and passed a new state budget. One key to passing the budget was that a number of House Republicans ignored the wishes of Republican leadership and voted for both a budget and a tax increase to pay for it. Let’s look at the results, since the tax hike in particular infuriated many Republicans. There are two votes to keep in mind. First was the initial vote to pass the tax hike, and then a second vote to override Rauner’s veto. On the first go-around, 15 House Republicans voted for the tax hike. When it came time to vote for the override — the crucial vote to actually put the tax hike in place — only 10 of the original 15 voted “yes.” Of the other five, one was absent and the other four switched their votes on the override. Of the 10 who voted for the override, seven opted not to run for re-election. Two faced primary challenges and won. One has a general election opponent, but did not have a primary. Of the four who switched their votes, one opted not to run; two had primary opponents and won; and the fourth was defeated in the primary. The lawmaker who was absent chose not to seek reelection. The anti-tax crowd can claim victory if they want, contending the GOP lawmakers who voted for the tax hike merely fled before voters could oust them. But it also appears that a vote to raise taxes wasn’t an automatic kiss of death when voters had a chance to weigh in.)

While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. March 24 Morning Edition

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Next thing you know, cemeteries will be voting in DuPage – Editorial (DIERSEN: Since 2015, there have been two cemeteries in my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton – Wheaton Cemetery (http://wheatoncemetery.org/) and St. Michael’s Cemetery (https://www.parishesonline.com/find/st-michaels-cemetery). Of my precinct’s 504 registered voters, according to the DuPage County Election Commission (DCEC), 105 (21%) cast Republican Ballots, 98 (19%) cast Democrat ballots, and 301 (60%) did not vote. Beyond outrageously, beyond unacceptably, in 2015, the DCEC let my critics/opponents unethically gerrymander my precinct to punish me and Jeanne Ives. The DCEC let my critics/opponents a) take away about 100 residences on the west side of my precinct and b) give me about 100 residences out Ives’ precinct to the east. The DCEC let my critics/opponents draw Ives into my precinct. But then, my critics/opponents drew her out of my new precinct and into Precinct 65 because she asked them to.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/next-thing-you-know-cemeteries-will-be-voting-in-dupage/
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Oh, DuPage County, have you forgotten who you are? Generations of Chicagoans fled to you, DuPage, to escape the political corruption of the big bad city. In Chicago, the rule of thumb was to “vote early and often.” In DuPage, a single honorable vote, almost always for a Republican, sufficed. In Chicago, the quiet residents of cemeteries voted. In DuPage, only the living, if sometimes barely. In Chicago, vote returns from the “river wards” could be held up for hours, allowing for a little late-night skullduggery to put a Machine favorite in a tight race over the top. In DuPage, goodness no. But on Tuesday in DuPage, the election process looked about as squared away as in Chicago circa 1947. Final voting results were not released until roughly eight hours after the polls closed, about 3 a.m. A skeptic might wonder if everything was on the up and up. We’re told it was a hardware problem. Elections judges were unable to get results from scanning machines, which are used to read paper ballots, and the judges had to lug 268 of the machines to the election commission office in Wheaton to tally the results. Now, on Tuesday, election officials will be on the hot seat. The DuPage County Board has asked them to attend a board meeting to explain what went wrong and how to fix it. “I promise you, there’s going to be changes,” County Board President Dan Cronin told the Daily Herald. “I am not done with this.” But there’s little mystery about what should be done — it was right on the ballot. An advisory referendum question asked voters whether the DuPage County Election Commission should be dissolved and its responsibilities taken over by the office of the county clerk. Fifty-six percent of the voters said that was a good idea. After Tuesday’s show of incompetence by the election commission, you can bet that even more voters now would say that’s a good idea. Cronin, who has been a leader in Illinois in trying to eliminate unnecessary units of government, is pushing the merger, which he says would make the election process more accountable and save DuPage taxpayers $300,000 a year. But the change requires a change in state law, and the Legislature has been slow to go along. Why? Because the Legislature is always slow to go along when it comes to eliminating unnecessary units of government. It’s about jobs and political turf. For the same reason, the Legislature has been insufficiently aggressive in eliminating township governments. Cronin is right. The DuPage Election Commission bungled it badly on Tuesday. And we were feeling the ghosts of those old Chicago ward heelers.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Stakes are high for Raoul, Harold in race to succeed Attorney General Lisa Madigan – Bill Lukitsch
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-kwame-raoul-erika-harold-attorney-general-20180322-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On the other is Harold, a conservative who has never held elected office and calls herself a “political outsider.” She is opposed to abortion and same-sex marriage but has vowed to uphold all of the state’s laws. Harold has accused Madigan of failing to take an interest in public corruption during her tenure, noting that her father is Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. And she’s backed by his chief political nemesis, Gov. Bruce Rauner. . .Harold disputes the suggestion she would be beholden to Rauner, noting that she has split with him over his decision to sign legislation expanding access to abortion. Even so, she says she will uphold that law and others she may personally disagree with. “The job of the attorney general is to enforce the law,” Harold said. “It’s not to impose your own agenda. It is to make sure that the laws are enforced uniformly and fairly, and I’m committed to doing that.” Rauner’s campaign gave Harold $305,000, and the governor has said he “personally recruited” her in part to “prosecute corruption against the Madigan clan and their network.” Harold first became well-known as the 2003 winner of the Miss America pageant. She says her “priorities are not partisan in nature” and will resonate with voters regardless of political affiliation. Still, Harold mirrors Rauner in promising to fight corruption within state government. She said she wants the legislature to provide additional powers for the attorney general, including the ability to convene a grand jury and issue subpoenas. “I think the priority of public corruption will be an issue where we may differ, and I think it’s important to emphasize fighting public corruption because both parties should be held accountable,” Harold said of Raoul. Harold works for a Champaign-based firm where she specializes in business law. She first sought public office in 2014, losing a Republican primary for Congress to U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis of Taylorville. She ran on a conservative social platform and since has been accused by her unsuccessful primary opponent of softening her position on conservative ideas to comport with the governor’s socially centrist agenda. Harold’s stance against same-sex marriage has served as a flashpoint in her primary bid. According to the book “Being Miss America: Behind the Rhinestone Curtain” by former Miss America Kate Shindle, Harold’s “ultra-conservative views” had kept her from winning the Miss Illinois pageant for several years. Shindle writes that Harold was asked in a pageant interview about adoption by same-sex couples. “Harold reportedly stated that she would choose to place a child in an abusive heterosexual home rather than with a loving gay couple,” the book says. Harold said she did not remember that exchange, saying she supports same-sex adoption and foster parenting, and “if I said what they alleged, it’s absolutely wrong.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner has shown that you can’t be fiscally conservative and say you are not socially conservative.” This was at the core of Ives’ campaign — Rauner isn’t a Republican, we are. She said as much during a campaign stop in February during the Williamson County Republican Women’s Lincoln Day Luncheon. “He’s not part of the ‘we,’” she said in an interview after her speech, referring to the Republican party. During her address in February, Ives thrashed Rauner’s dealings with Democrats, particularly on a controversial piece of legislation last year that loosened regulations allowing state medical dollars to be used for abortions. She said reaching across the aisle on party issues this way was a sign of weakness — she said “capitulating” to the opposition showed vulnerability and this was not quality in a leader.)

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION
— FOX News: Bruce Rauner is “Friendless” (DIERSEN: Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that if anyone else had been the Republican Precinct Committeeman in DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 since 1999, a) far more than just 105 of its 504 registered voters would have cast Republican ballots in the March 20, 2018 primary election, b) far fewer than 98 would have cast Democrat ballots, and c) many, if not most, if not virtually all of the 301 who did not vote would have cast Republican ballots. In my defense, as I have reported to the DuPage County Election Commission, 20 of the 504, including Chris Hage and his wife, no longer live in the precinct. Further, since 1999, those who dominate the Milton Township Republican Central Committee, the DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and the Illinois Republican Party have done everything that they can to discredit me with the voters in my precinct. Officially, they hint/imply/argue/shout that I am “too conservative” and because of that, candidates that I might promote in primaries are “too conservative” to win general elections. But from what see, having lived in my precinct since 1984, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout under the table and below the belt at the voters in my precinct and at everyone else that I am a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things. I should write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes. Maybe I should sue them.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: After nearly losing the primary to an insurgent challenger Tuesday night, FOX News reported that Governor Bruce Rauner is “friendless” and a reporter called him a “governor without a party.” National Journal’s Josh Kraushaar broke down Rauner’s embarrassingly close call: “He only got 52% of the Republican in the primary vote last night. That’s a really, really big danger sign. It certainly places him as the most vulnerable governor heading into the general election.” “The Illinois Republican Party is completely divided, lied to, and let down by a failed governor who is not in charge,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “Bruce Rauner can’t even bring his own party together, let alone the state he has entirely failed to lead.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner is seeking “common ground” with Republicans on divisive issues after barely surviving an insurgent challenge in Tuesday’s election. Rauner said his 19,000-vote victory over state Rep. Jeanne Ives in the GOP primary has confirmed for him the need to “bridge the divides.” He told reporters Thursday after a campaign kickoff at a Springfield sign-making company that focusing on “what unites us” is key to victory. That includes lowering property and income taxes and imposing political term limits. “We are working right now, every day to find bridges on issues that divide us. My primary focus is on what unites us. That’s the key to changing the state. That’s the key to victory,” he said. He said Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker is in cahoots with Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. Rauner says nemesis Madigan is part of a “Mafia protection racket” by getting rich off of legal work reducing property tax assessments. Madigan has said he follows the law and strict ethical standards.)

http://nprillinois.org/post/rauner-gop-voters-i-have-heard-you#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At a campaign stop in Springfield, reporters asked what exactly Rauner heard — but his answer was vague. “Specifically there were some issues that divide us,” he answered. He explained he had known for a while that he “needs to find common ground” to bridge the divides, and said he’d like to focus on key issues that unite them — like enacting term limits and lowering property and income taxes. His opponent, Jeanne Ives, was more specific on those issues during her campaign. She said Rauner was out of touch with Republicans on abortion and a so-called sanctuary law. She also said Rauner placed too much blame on House Speaker Michael Madigan for his own failures as governor. Unlike the Democratic candidates who lost to J.B. Pritzker but pledged to support him, Ives has yet to call on her base to rally behind Rauner — or even to call Rauner at all. Rauner said his campaign team tried to set-up a call with Ives on Wednesday without success. “We will ultimately bring people together,” he said referring to Ives’ GOP base and his.)

Who do you want to represent you on the 2020 IRP Platform & Resolutions Committee? https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/3-big-takeaways-from-the-illinois-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Robin Kelly won two victories in the primary from Democratic voters in the 2nd Congressional District. She was nominated for another term in Congress — that’s a clinch for November on this Democratic turf — and she won her race to become one of 38 members in charge of the Democratic Party of Illinois. They pick the chairman. The party chair is state House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has been slammed for his handling of sexual harassment allegations — serious hits in this “MeToo” era. GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner plans to continue to make Madigan a centerpiece of his re-election campaign. Madigan will be up for re-election as state party chair. I should write a book about a) those who badmouth me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to Roskam, b) those who badmouthed me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to Hyde, and c) those who since 1989 have badmouthed me to both Roskam and Hyde.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-roskam-casten-6th-race-st-0323-20180322-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Roskam didn’t face a primary challenger, but suburban Democrats see November’s general election as a potential chance to take the seat in November because Democrat Hillary Clinton won the 6th District over Republican President Donald Trump by 7 percentage points in the 2016 election. Roskam prevailed in his race that year by more than 18 points. Roskam has faced tough campaigns before. He has held the 6th Congressional District seat since 2006, when he narrowly defeated Democrat Tammy Duckworth in a nationally watched race. The district’s boundaries have changed since then, and it now includes parts of Naperville, Elgin, Wheaton and portions of DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Cook counties.)
— Republicans blame Democrats for allowing Holocaust denier Art Jones with Nazi affiliations to get 20K GOP votes – Ted Slowik (DIERSEN: Why should anyone listen to the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) concerning Jones? Rauner rejects the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the IRP planform. Because the IRP promotes Rauner, the IRP rejects the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the IRP platform.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/daily-southtown/opinion/ct-sta-slowik-primary-election-recap-st-0322-20180321-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Maybe some of the 13,158 suburban Cook County residents who voted for Jones strongly believe in freedom of speech and Jones’ right to express his views. Perhaps some of the 3,023 voters in Chicago who punched his ticket agree with his positions on immigration (“no more sanctuary cities!”) or his support of 2nd Amendment rights (“concealed carry for personal protection!”). I suppose it’s possible some of the 4,093 people in Will County who cast ballots for Jones did so knowing about his anti-Semitic views but supported him anyway because of his stances against abortion and same-sex marriage. More likely, the 65 DuPage County residents who voted for Jones, 70, didn’t know about his former membership in the American Nazi Party or that he ran for mayor of Milwaukee as a member of the National Socialist White People’s Party in 1976. Jones, however, told me Wednesday he believes the votes for him were no accident. “The people who voted for me knew exactly who I was,” Jones said. “They liked what I had to say.” Jones said the Republican Party sent mailers and made robocalls telling people about his views, so voters must have known. “That might have gotten me a lot of votes,” he said of the party’s efforts. I think it’s more likely the vast majority of Jones voters simply supported whatever GOP candidate happened to be on the ballot. “Yes, I think your surmise is spot on,” said Sean Morrison of Orland Park, chair of the Cook County Republican Party, state committeeman for the 3rd District and Cook County Board member. “Look, the overwhelming majority of most folks in the district have absolutely no idea who the Nazi Art Jones is,” Morrison told me Wednesday. “I feel that they very likely pulled their Republican ballot and voted down the line.” Jones has previously run for the seat, but Republicans either successfully knocked him off the ballot by challenging his petitions or ran legitimate candidates whose totals dwarfed the few votes cast for Jones. This year was different. I asked Morrison why Republicans failed to field a “serious” candidate to challenge seven-term incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski, a conservative who narrowly withstood a primary challenge from progressive Marie Newman. “Well, it was certainly not for lack of trying to draw in candidates,” Morrison said. “The 3rd Congressional district has historically voted very high for Congressman Lipinski. Even many Republicans vote for him due to his strong family values positions, so he receives a great deal of crossover voters. “He typically wins his general races in 70 percent to 30 percent margins. Most prospects see the seemingly futile attempt in running against him.” In other words, the problem isn’t so much that 20,000 Republicans may have just voted for a Nazi. It’s the partisan political system where the party in power gets to redraw district maps every 10 years to maximize odds of retaining power by keeping races noncompetitive. “The seat is mathematically drawn like the majority of districts as a Democrat district seat,” Morrison said. “This is the larger issue citizens should recognize and be concerned about in Illinois. “The Democrats have controlled the district remap drawings for several decades now. The Democrat-controlled gerrymandering is unabashed and (is the reason) why we have a real one-party system throughout Illinois.” I accept Morrison’s explanation as based in fact and admire his skill at spinning this as the fault of Democrats. Still, I think the candidacy of Jones harms the Republican brand more than it does the Democrats.
On a national scale Wednesday, reaction to Jones’ win ranged from shock and disbelief to outrage across traditional and social media channels. “Arthur Jones is a Nazi, not a Republican. It is a disgrace that he has won the Republican nomination,” Norman Coleman, chair of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said in a statement. “The GOP didn’t invite Jones into the party,” Coleman said. “The only mistake was not running a candidate in an uncompetitive, safe-Democrat district.” The Illinois GOP continues to denounce Jones. A state party spokesman told The New York Times the party would devote resources to supporting a Republican to run as an independent against Lipinski in November. “Arthur Jones is not a real Republican; he is a Nazi whose disgusting, bigoted views have no place in our nation’s discourse,” Tim Schneider, the Illinois Republican Party chairman, said in a statement. The National Republican Congressional Committee issued a statement that did not mention Jones by name. . .”There is no gerrymandering in Illinois,” Brown said. “Their whining about that is not factual.” There was ample publicity prior to the election about Jones’ Nazi affiliations, he added. “How anybody could vote for this individual is mind-boggling,” Brown said. “It was a conscious effort to cast those votes.” I think the number of votes cast for Jones is another statement about the perils of uneducated voters. Despite record early-voting numbers, turnout ended up at just 28.5 percent of suburban Cook County’s 1.5 million registered voters. Turnout among younger voters was notably low — at 3.4 percent — despite heightened interest in the Lipinski-Newman race and a nonbinding referendum asking whether Cook County should legalize marijuana for recreational use. The measure passed by a nearly two-to-one margin. Millennials ages 18-27 cast just 16,780 ballots, Clerk David Orr reported. That was the lowest of any age group and compares to 76,696 for ages 58-67, 67,302 for ages 48-57 and 48,225 for ages 68-77.)

https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/21/politics/democrat-high-turnout-illinois/index.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The primaries in Illinois on Tuesday night were, for the most part melodramatic — some big names got scares but there were no major upsets. There was, however, some good news for Democrats: In the second of two statewide primaries this year (Texas being the other), turnout was significantly higher for Democrats than in either 2010 or 2014. There were just under 1.3 million votes cast in the Illinois Democratic primary Tuesday to just over 700,000 in the Republican primary. Put another way, 64% of the votes cast were on the Democratic line, compared with only 36% on the Republican line. Now, Illinois is a blue state, but even taking that into account, it was an impressive performance for Democrats. Dating back to 1998, there has never been a midterm year in which there was a higher percentage of two-party votes cast in the Illinois Democratic primary compared with 2018. Importantly, this includes 2010, when both the Democrats and Republicans had competitive gubernatorial primaries, like this year. In 2010, just 54% of all primary votes were cast in the Democratic primary when Republicans gained over 60 seats across the country and control of the US House.)

The population of federally designated retirement destination counties rose 2% last year, almost three times the rate of national population growth, according to census county population estimates for the year that ended July 1. Almost three-quarters of a million Americans during that period moved into one of the 442 counties that the Agriculture Department tags as retiree spots. https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/rauner-ives-illinois-primary-election-477560013.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The race was ugly from the start and didn’t end much better, as the two candidates did not speak on election night nor the following day. A spokeswoman for Ives’ campaign confirmed Wednesday afternoon that she and Rauner had still not been in contact – and had no plans to speak in the future. “Why would she talk to him after the disrespect he showed last night announcing victory before all of the counties were in – without a call to the campaign, after he poured millions of dollars into an attack campaign that flat-out lied about her, and after he dispatched his slimy operatives to the media last night to disparage Ives, her campaign and all of her conservative supporters?” Ives’ spokeswoman Kathleen Murphy said in a statement. “She has no reason to believe or trust anything he says,” Murphy continued. Rauner emerged to deliver an election night victory speech on Tuesday before the race had been officially called in his favor. “I am honored and humbled by this victory,” Rauner said Tuesday night, claiming victory with a slim lead and even as voting machine problems delayed results from DuPage County – Ives’ home territory that she ultimately carried by four points. “You have given me the chance to win the battle against the corruption that plagues Illinois. Thank you,” Rauner continued, adding, “This primary election was hard fought, yes. I want to congratulate my opponent on her principled stand.” “For those of you around the state of Illinois who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear: I have heard you,” he said. Rauner initially dismissed Ives as a “fringe candidate” before pivoting to take her more seriously after she garnered the support of various conservative organizations, and even some of his former backers that sought to take down the first-term governor from the right.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: So, where do Jeanne Ives supporters go in the November election Bill Cameron? On election eve, Jeanne Ives told me she’d support Bruce Rauner if he wins the primary. Ives: “Because obviously elections are always about choices and sometimes you have bad choices and worse choices. Every single Democrat would be a disaster for the State of Illinois. Cameron: “So, even though you think Rauner is bad, the Democrats are worse?” Ives: “Absolutely! They certainly are.” But on the morning after, Ives said she has no plans to pick up the phone and concede to Rauner. She said, “I really don’t care to say anything to the governor at this point, quite frankly.” Sounds like Rauner needs to move further to the right.)

http://www.wlsam.com/2018/03/21/rauner-pledges-to-unite-republicans-after-defeating-ives-in-republican-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is pledging to unite the fractured Republican party after winning his bitter primary battle with conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives. Rauner beat Ives by less than 20,000 votes, 51 to 48 percent, in a race that she started because of anger over Rauner’s decision to sign a law allowing for taxpayer funded abortions. Wednesday morning, Rauner told “The Big John and Ramblin’ Ray Show” on WLS that he will start a listening tour to get input from Illinois voters. “On the issues that have divided us, I want to find ways to bridge the divide. To come together, to come up with solutions that bridge the divide. We can do this, and we’ll work together in good faith.” Rauner will face Democrat J.B. Pritzker in November, after Pritzker defeated five challengers in the Democratic primary. Pritzker is expected to try and tie Rauner to the policies of Republican President Donald Trump, but Rauner, who has gone to great pains to distance himself from the President, told WLS that strategy won’t work. “People know that I’m my own person”, said Rauner. “I work with the Trump administration to help the people of Illinois just like I work with the Obama administration to help the people of Illinois. I am my own person. I make my own decisions. And all I care about is workin’ for the families of our state.” Pritzker was out early Wednesday morning thanking voters at the 95th Street Red Line stop on the South Side. He told reporters Rauner has had his chance to govern the state, and has failed. “Illinois has an important job in the next eight months and that’s to decide which direction it wants to go”, said Pritzker. “Down the road of the failed policies of Bruce Rauner, or on the road toward recovery and job creation and lowering the cost of health care, and making sure that every child gets a quality education. That’s what this campaign is gonna be all about and we’re gonna make sure people know it.” However Rauner told WLS that Pritzker has connections to what he says is corruption in the state Democratic party. “Pritzker is part of the machine. He’s part of the corruption in Illinois, he’s a tax dodger, a tax cheat, he tried to buy the Senate seat from Blagojevich, the truth is comin’ out on Pritzker and when the truth is known for the people of Illinois, they’ll choose Rauner and Sanguinetti, and they’ll choose reform so we can have a better future.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-kass-bleak-rauner-november-20180321-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It was Rauner who invited a primary challenge by playing social justice warrior of the left, signing a bill that put taxpayers on the hook for paying for abortions, and also signing sanctuary state legislation. Ives took the challenge, and that she came so close so quickly and with little statewide name recognition and nothing like his bankroll is a testament not only to her own message but of Rauner’s low standing among the grass-roots GOP. Democrats know this, and the bosses salivate in anticipation of November. So if Rauner has charted out a way forward to mend the intra-party rifts in the hopes of stopping Pritzker, it hasn’t been articulated. And burning Boss Madigan in rhetorical effigy day after day just won’t cut it. Ives understands the problems are about more than allegiance. “In the state of Illinois, we do not have Republican or Democrat problems,” Ives said in her concession speech. “No, we have a math problem. … “You can’t just spend yourself into oblivion, piling up millions of dollars in debt, while hundreds of thousands of people flee the state of Illinois, and think that things are going to get better the next day,” Ives said. “It’s got to stop.” But it won’t stop, not anytime soon, not with a divided Illinois Republican Party, and not with Pritzker funding the Democrats who are moving farther and farther to the left.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180321/cronin-changes-coming-after-dupage-election-commissions-inept-performance–
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cronin said he wants commission officials to attend next week’s county board meeting to answer questions about what happened. “We will make an effort to discover all the facts,” Cronin said, but someone must be held responsible. “I promise you, there’s going to be changes,” he said. “I am done with this.” Cronin said he also will continue pushing for a state law change to merge the election commission with the county clerk’s office. He has supported that concept for years, but the legislature has been reluctant to give the county permission to do it. “I look forward to the day the election commission is under the auspices of the clerk’s office,” Cronin said. “There will be accountability, better responsiveness and better professionalism — I am certain of that.” On Wednesday, election commission officials said the problem with the optical scan voting machines was caused by so-called “ender cards”– similar to paper ballots — that are needed to close the machines and tabulate results. It turns out the ender cards the commission purchased from Liberty Systems couldn’t be run through the machines. “The paper stock used by the vendor for this election was not to specification and didn’t fit through the scanner,” said Joseph Sobecki, the commission’s executive director. “That resulted in none of the locations being able to close the optical scan.” The problem didn’t affect touch-screen voting machines, but most DuPage voters use optical scan paper ballots. Once the problem was discovered, Sobecki said officials decided to bring the optical scan voting machines from every polling place to Wheaton so they could go through the closing procedure. Cronin blasted that decision. “If the cards fail, you should have a system in place to respond to that,” he said. “This notion that you are going to physically transport every one of these machines from all of the polling places and have them wait in line out in the driveways of the county complex … is just stunning to me in its level of incompetence.” Sobecki said the first machines arrived around 8:45 p.m. Meanwhile, Cronin said he was getting calls from numerous campaigns wondering where their votes were. . .The commission said “rigorous” testing was done before the election, but Zay said he doesn’t believe it. “If they tested it, it would have worked,” he said. “The problem is they have their own separate board,” Zay said, referring to the three-person panel that oversees the commission. “Maybe that board needs to go.” The three members of the bipartisan DuPage Board of Election Commissioners are appointed by Cronin. Republicans hold two of the three seats. Cronin acknowledged that election commissioners should bear responsibility. “I think there is a enough blame to go around over there,” he said. “The whole operation needs to be re-examined from top to bottom as we dissolve it.”)

FEDERAL TIMES
— House reinstates rule that can target fed pay, agency funds – Jessie Bur (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, if I was still working for the federal government, my critics/opponents would be pressuring Roskam, Hultgren, Bost, Davis, Kinzenger, LaHood, and Shimkus to use the Holman Rule to cut my federal pay to zero and even worse things. My critics/opponents have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois, but nevertheless, they blame me for their problems, blame me for your problems, blame me for my problems, and blame for everyone’s problems.)
https://www.federaltimes.com/federal-oversight/congress/2018/03/20/house-passes-reinstatement-of-rule-that-could-cut-federal-employee-pay/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The House of Representatives in a contentious March 20, 2018, vote passed the continuation of an old procedural rule that would give Congress the ability to cut the pay of individual federal workers and to eliminate entire agency programs. The Holman Rule, first passed in 1876 and named for Indiana Rep. William Holman, was removed from the House rule book in 1983. The rule was then reinstated in the Rules of the House for the 115th Congress, but applied only to the first session or year. House Republicans extended the Holman Rule through the end of the current Congress by adding it to H.Res. 787, which provides for the consideration of two unrelated bills. “Last night, without any public debate, House Republicans snuck into legislation the Holman Rule — a cynical and dangerous attack on federal workers that allows members of Congress to reduce the salaries of federal employees. This archaic tool, also known as the Armageddon Rule, is nothing more than a backdoor way for Republicans to dismantle the federal workforce and carry out political vendettas at the expense of career civil servants,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va.)

— Legislation Would Make Federal Employee Bonuses Public Information – Ian Smith (DIERSEN: What about legislation that would require the federal government to issue press releases 90/60/30 days before it takes adverse actions against its employees. Adverse action like a) when my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; and b) when my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) when my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968?)
