DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Diana Rauner: We’re moving to Italy if Bruce loses
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511364971-diana-rauner-we-re-moving-to-italy-if-bruce-loses
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner says he’ll fight for Illinoisans. But only if he wins re-election. If he loses, Rauner’s wife, Diana, says she and Bruce are out of here. “Bruce and I are moving to Italy,” a source says she flippantly told a group of “mostly Democrat” women from DuPage County last Thursday. The occasion was an event at the home of Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and his wife, Julie Cole Chirico, chief fundraiser for embattled, but Rauner-financed House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs). Diana Rauner’s Italy remark was a response to a question she received about Illinois’ stunning rate of outmigration. An attendee noted that several of her neighbors had left the state, asking Diana Rauner what her husband planned to do to encourage people to stay. “She made a vague comment about stopping Madigan and then said that, if Bruce lost and they couldn’t stop Madigan, they were moving to Italy,” the source told DuPage Policy Journal. “It was awkward.” In addition to employing his wife, Durkin and his campaign chief, David Walsh, are a longtime backers of Mayor Chirico, a moderate Republican who supports Rauner but actively opposed President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. The Rauners have traveled to Italy on official business during his administration. In Nov. 2016, Gov. Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel traveled to Rome along with State Sen. John Cullerton (D-Chicago) Chicago Ald. Ed Burke (D-14th), former social secretary to President Barack Obama, Desiree Rogers and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) to see then-Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich be elevated to cardinal. At a co-press conference with Emanuel in Vatican City, Rauner said “this time reminds us that the good lord did not make us Republicans or Democrats.” Seven months later, Rauner would break his promise to Cardinal Cupich that he would not sign a bill that would force Illinois taxpayers to pay for abortions.)

https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Candidates-in-Final-Push-Ahead-of-Illinois-Primary-477248143.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner spent his Sunday campaigning downstate. Meantime his challenger, state senator Jeanne Ives, criticized the $75-million dollar Rauner campaign. “He thinks he can use his money to spread lies about me,” she said, “to put him back into office and that’s pathetic.”)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Trump a power player in Illinois 2018 primary – Lynn Sweet
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/trump-a-power-player-in-illinois-2018-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump is a big player in Tuesday’s Illinois primary with Trump-fueled voting expected to boost 2018 turnout compared to 2010 and 2012, the most recent nonpresidential years. Who does that help the most? On the GOP side, it’s pro-Trump governor candidate Jeanne Ives, taking on Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been running from Trump. As for Democrats, the Trump factor benefits most the contenders who are able to seize the support of angry, newly energized voters. In the bigger primary races, that would include governor hopeful state Sen. Daniel Biss; House contender Marie Newman and Cook County Assessor challenger Fritz Kaegi. Here’s what I’ve learned about the Illinois Trump factors based on interviews with strategists, and my analysis of TV ads, direct mail and other political communications: Democrats furious over Trump’s 2016 victory, who usually don’t vote in nonpresidential years, are in this time. Those voters — younger, people of color and women — are likely more progressive, strategists tell me. Far fewer Republicans vote in Illinois primaries, so a candidate with a committed, animated base — that would be Ives — has an advantage. Rauner is wobbly on Trump. He’s loath to associate with Trump for fear of alienating Democratic and crossover GOP voters he will need in November. That is, should he be renominated since pro-Trump Ives, a state representative from Wheaton, has mustered a strong challenge from the right. The Democratic Governor’s Association is trying to throw the primary to Ives because she will be easier to beat in November. The DGA is running an ad praising her for being in “lockstep” with Trump — a pitch, wicked as it is from Democrats, to appeal to Trump primary voters turned off by Rauner.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— The real job description to work for Trump: Blind loyalty – Dahleen Glanton (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout. I should write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes.)

The more that you do to defend and advance the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform and the more that you do to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance the aforesaid planks, the more likely that Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs will succeed in getting someone to run against you.)

— Men, ask a woman to mentor you – Melissa Lamson (DIERSEN: I did that in early 1990. In my opinion, GAO failed/refused to promote into its Senior Executive Service a GS-15 Jewish woman a) who was my immediate supervisor during my last 4 years at GAO and b) who supervised my immediate supervisor the previous 4 years because she failed/refused to do more to waste my career and to get rid of me. Most, if not virtually all of my GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates DID NOT want to work for her, work with her, or supervise her because she was female, younger, Jewish, very intelligent, very demanding, and wealthy. She had an MBA from the University of Chicago and had passed the CPA examination on her first attempt. To turn her against me, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates stressed to her a) that I was conservative (she was liberal), b) that I was Republican (she was Democrat), c) that I was 100% German national origin (she was 100% Russian national origin), d) that I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran (she was Jewish), and e) that my ancestors had been in America since the 1840s (her ancestors were recent immigrants.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— How changed are Chicago-area Democrats? – GREG HINZ (DIERSEN: From what I see having lived in the Chicago-area since 1948, Democrats here are ever-increasingly anti-Trump supporters, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. Where have you lived and worked? I lived in Crete 1948-1972, in University Park 1972-1976, in Chicago 1976-1978, and in Wheaton since 1978. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats and many Republicans in Illinois were horrified by the ad: a 60-second spot released by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s GOP primary challenger, Jeanne Ives, featuring a parade of politically incorrect takes on thorny cultural issues. A deep-voiced man portraying a transgender woman tells Rauner, “Thank you for signing legislation that lets me use the girls bathroom.” Then a young woman thanks Rauner for “making all Illinois families pay for my abortions.” But equally shocking to the content was the person who had made the ad possible: Richard Uihlein, a little-known Republican donor who had until recently been one of Rauner’s biggest supporters. After a fallout out with the governor over abortion policy, Uihlien gave $2.5 million to Ives in a single week this past January — essentially bankrolling her campaign to defeat Rauner in a Republican primary on Tuesday.)

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/03/trump-made-white-house-staff-sign-ndas-to-stop-leaks-report.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s well-known that nearly everyone in Donald Trump’s orbit has to sign a nondisclosure agreement, from business associates, to campaign employees, to women he may or may not have had an affair with. Therefore it is simultaneously galling and non-at-all surprising that Trump may have pressured senior White House staffers into signing NDAs, though they are members of the federal government, not his personal employees. Trump actually told the Washington Post in April 2016 that he intended to use NDAs in the White House, saying “when people are chosen by a man to go into government at high levels and then they leave government and they write a book about a man and say a lot of things that were really guarded and personal, I don’t like that.” He allowed that “there could be some kind of a law that you can’t do this,” and experts say he was on to something: ACLU: Public employees can’t be gagged by private agreements. These so-called NDAs are unconstitutional and unenforceable.)

(THE LETTER: The March 12 “Opinion — The Choice for Governor,” clearly shows that the Daily Herald has a very liberal agenda as well as a flawed crystal ball, which you also used to support and predict Hillary Clinton in the last presidential election. It was very obvious in that election that the Daily Herald editorial staff clearly missed the wave of support for Donald Trump. You continue to report that Jeanne Ives cannot win in November. It is obvious that you recognize that Gov. Rauner has lost his base of support that marginally put him in office. As such, he cannot statistically win re-election in November. Rauner is your choice to run against the winner of the Democratic primary. Jeanne Ives has a rapidly growing wave of support while Gov. Rauner has lost his base that put in him in office. In your endorsement, it is stated that Rauner has demonstrated his commitment to the fundamental values of the Republican Party. This could not be further from the truth. Rauner lied to Cardinal Cupich and his constituents when he said he would not sign the bill authorizing Medicare funding of abortions. He also approved the bill making Illinois a sanctuary state. Rauner owns the 32 percent income tax increase, because he failed to do his job as a leader to keep the Republican leaders unified to the values of the constituents that put them in office. These are not Republican values. It is Gov. Rauner that has divided the Republican Party. Jeanne Ives has the knowledge, legislative experience, and drive to lead this great state from the brink of financial disaster. She has a reputation as a smart, honest, and committed legislator that truly represents the financial interests of the Illinois taxpayer.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Trump factor looms large in Illinois governor primary campaigns – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: What will the anti-Trump voters in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township, in your county, and in Illinois do? Will they cast a Republican primary ballot and vote for those candidates who are the most anti-Trump?  Or will they cast a Democrat primary ballot and vote for those candidates who are the most anti-Trump? How many of the voters are anti-Trump in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois? Only 137 voted for Trump in my precinct, while 211 voted for Clinton.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-illinois-governor-race-donald-trump-factor-20180315-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For Republicans, it’s a question of whether the enthusiasm that gave Trump more than 2 million votes and victories in 91 of the state’s 102 counties in 2016 (despite an overall loss to Hillary Clinton here) will manifest itself in the primary for governor. . .When Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives explains to voters why she’s challenging Gov. Bruce Rauner in the primary election, she cites the honor code of her West Point alma mater: “I will not lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those that do.” The governor, Ives contends, lied to her and other social conservatives in 2014 when he said he had no social agenda, and she points to his signature on a law to expand abortion rights. At the same time, however, the Wheaton legislator has embraced Trump and urges what she calls the “silent majority” that elected him to rise up against Rauner. Trump’s lies in office are well chronicled — just Wednesday, he boasted that he made up facts on trade during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump also has a history of cheating, including his affair with actress Marla Maples that broke up his first marriage, and the current fallout from $130,000 paid by his lawyer to a porn star who goes by the name Stormy Daniels as “hush money” about an alleged affair. How does Ives reconcile campaigning on an honor code that prohibits lying and cheating as a rationale to take on Rauner, while not only tolerating but actively promoting Trump? Asked that question recently, Ives paused for several seconds. “For me, it’s a personal affront to what Gov. Rauner has done because I’m part of that Republican caucus he lied to, OK?” she said. “So, it’s a very personal thing. That’s the thing. I can affect him (Rauner) and the outcome of this election. I can’t necessarily affect Donald Trump.” . . . “These two primary races at the governor’s level are pretty good examples of this issue of differentiation. Jeanne Ives has been very clear and very pointed about differentiating herself from Rauner in very specific ways,” he said. “Whereas the Democrats have to say, ‘Well, I’ve got this slightly different take on (things).’ Nuances are a problem.” With Ives, there’s not much nuance to her support for the president. “I think we should have a working relationship with (Trump),” she said after a recent gathering of the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents at Water Tower Place. “And look, I’ve been disappointed by a lot of other politicians who have lied about what their intentions are, have done the wrong thing. But you still work with them. You still work with them,” she said. “But in the case of Rauner, I can actually affect change where he has personally lied about his policies.” Ives has supported Trump attacks on sanctuary cities and illegal immigration while criticizing Rauner’s approval of legislation that would prevent local law enforcement from holding someone based solely on their legal status or detaining someone without a judicially issued warrant. Ives’ challenge means Rauner’s attempts to distance himself from Trump have become a factor for the governor ahead of the primary, Mooney said. “Rauner’s spent his time ignoring (Trump), (the president) is sort of a pariah in the state, and that’s annoyed the Trump supporters in the state, and then Jeanne Ives comes along,” Mooney said. “If she wouldn’t have been there, raising (Rauner’s) ambiguity about Trump and all of that, in the fall, the Democrat, whoever it would be, would definitely hammer him on Trump, associate him with Trump,” he added. “But without Ives putting out these sort of RINO (Republican In Name Only) criticisms and so forth, those (Trump) people might have just gone ahead and would vote for (Rauner).” Trump presents a problem for a Republican governor running in a Democratic-leaning state. For nearly two years, Rauner routinely has avoided using the president’s name in public, and he skipped the 2016 GOP convention that nominated Trump. Asked by reporters about Trump-proposed policies on immigration, health care and other issues and Rauner regularly demurs — at one point saying he had “no obligation” to discuss “every policy change in Washington.” Instead, Rauner has focused his primary campaign on his frequent political target, veteran Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, going so far as to try to link Madigan to Ives despite vast ideological differences between the Democratic leader and the GOP challenger. The assertion rated a “Pants on Fire” from PolitiFact Illinois. The election, Rauner told reporters, is “about the people against a corrupt, broken system. It’s about the people of Illinois demanding more value for their taxes and a lower tax burden, the people of Illinois demanding more jobs, more economic opportunity and the people of Illinois demanding an end to the corruption in our system by getting term limits.” The governor said his campaign message is one of “unification” that transcends party labels. But Rauner has had difficulty finding a base. His approval of legislation expanding taxpayer-funded abortions to women covered by Medicaid and state employee health insurance motivated Ives to challenge him. GOP conservatives viewed Rauner’s move as a betrayal after he had vowed to veto the bill. On the other hand, Rauner’s support of the measure could help him if he makes it to the November general election, winning favor with GOP-leaning moderate suburban women, a critical demographic in an evolving collar county landscape. Rauner followed that up, however, with his Tuesday veto of legislation that would have required the state licensing of gun shops. That’s legislation those same suburban women, many of them mothers of school-age children, would support. Before then, however, Rauner has to win the primary election, and he knows the voting power of Downstate gun-rights supporters. David Yepsen, the former head of the Paul Simon Public Policy Center at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, said the Trump impact in the primaries may only be just the beginning heading toward the outcomes of the November general election. “There is a Trump effect, and it can be a harmful one to Republican chances in Illinois in November. There is a Democrat wave starting to form, and it manifests itself in the energy you see in these groups, the turnouts in primaries in other states,” said Yepsen, a former national columnist for The Des Moines Register. “It’s history. It’s the midterm election and the party in power (in the White House) is going to take a hit.” he said. “In Illinois, Republicans don’t have a lot of margin.”)
— National Democrats get into Republican governor race – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-dan-lipinski-marie-newman-20180316-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Governors Association is launching two ads in the closing days of the primary campaign, electing to play in the Republican sandbox. One ad goes after Gov. Rauner. The other takes on his challenger, state Rep. Jeanne Ives. In ad about Rauner, a definition of the word “worst” appears on screen as a female narrator says: “Worst. It’s not a word we like to hear in Illinois but worst is where Gov. Rauner has taken Illinois since he took office.” In ad about Ives, a male narrator says: “When is a conservative leader too conservative for Illinois? Meet Jeanne Ives. She’s been rated as one of the most conservative in the state.” Each spot ends with a phone number on screen for people to call either Rauner or Ives. The numbers are not their campaign offices, however. They’re state government phone numbers in Springfield. The DGA’s decision to play in the Republican primary comes after Rauner forces have been doing it for nearly a year in the Democratic governor primary. Back-to-back ads back in May from the state Republican Party, which Rauner heavily subsidizes, and from Rauner’s campaign sought to contrast Rauner’s wealth as “self-made” compared with Pritzker’s “inherited” wealth. Rauner is a private equity investor, while Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and investor, is an heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune.)

IRS and GAO would not have wasted that training if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)
http://www.insidesources.com/union-leader-job-training-not-enough/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Trumka addressed the issue while speaking during a panel discussion at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas. He argued that training alone isn’t enough and that more needs to be done to ensure workers aren’t hurt by these new technologies. He added that unions already train many workers but that hasn’t fully addressed the issue. “We train people, that’s what we do,” Trumka said during the discussion. “That’s not the issue, training them to do what? And if in fact the logical conclusion is technology shrinks all the jobs so that there are not enough jobs for those in the society, that training only makes you, first it makes you, in my instance, you’re an unemployed miner, then you get trained to be a computer programmer, so then I was an unemployed computer programmer.” The Government Accountability Office (GAO) found in a 2011 report that the federal government spends about $18 billion annually on job training programs. Former President Barack Obama, for instance, invested $90 million into a federal program focused exclusively on apprenticeships – an area the current administration has been looking to expand.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/submitted/20180306/cod-student-participates-in-prestigious-accounting-internship
(FROM THE ARTICLE: College of DuPage student Benjamin Hamgeri recently took part in the prestigious Mary T. Washington Wylie Accounting Internship Preparation Program. Sponsored by the Illinois CPA Society, the program is for African American and other underrepresented students who have at least a 3.0 GPA and a sophomore or junior standing. Hamgeri was one of only 25 college or university students in Illinois selected to participate, with each receiving a $500 scholarship. The Bensenville resident heard about the program from COD Accounting Professor Maureen McBeth. “I owe it all to her,” he said. “She is such a great teacher and approached me about this opportunity, which I had not heard about before.” During the three-day training program, held at the beginning of the year, participants networked with peers and listened to presentations from professionals at the major accounting firms in Chicago. Hamgeri also toured Grant Thornton, one of the city’s top firms, and gained valuable interviewing tips. “Everyone was enthusiastic to be there, and it was great to speak with people working in the field,” he said. “On the last day, we had a chance to interview with different accounting firms for 20 minutes each. It was good to find out what they look for when hiring, and the experience encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone.” Although his brother is an accountant and his mother studied accounting, Hamgeri initially wanted to do something else for a career. “I was interested in business but not sure what specific area to study,” he said. “I was at Illinois State University but I really didn’t want to go to college, so I returned home to refocus. Although my sister came to College of DuPage, I didn’t want to because I didn’t want to attend what I thought was just a bigger version of my high school. I found that COD is so much more.” Taking classes with McBeth helped Hamgeri see accounting the right career for him. “I never had a teacher take so much interest in me, going the extra mile to help me develop as a student,” he said. “She made me realize how prestigious accounting was. The stigma is that you sit at your desk all day. Instead, accounting is a form of communication — it’s the language of business. It tells you whether or not your business will succeed, and it’s always changing.” Hamgeri plans to become a CPA but is still determining what area of accounting to pursue. Because of College of DuPage, he is optimistic about school and his future. “COD helped relieved the pressure of attending a large university,” he said. “It’s much easier to focus here and everyone’s door is open, from meeting with professors to finding a tutor. I’ve learned to ask questions and not be afraid of what other people say. “At COD, you’re getting a good education. And if you are enthusiastic and hungry to learn more, the world is yours.”)

DAILY HERALD
— DuPage voters to consider proposal to merge the DuPage County Election Commission with the clerk’s office – Robert Danchez (DIERSEN: Of course, as an elected Republican Precinct Committeeman in DuPage County since 2000, I have dealt a lot with the DuPage County Election Commission (DCEC). So far, sadly, if not outrageously, my many requests have been denied that the DCEC notify elected precinct committeemen directly and in a timely manner of any proposed changes to their polling place or to their precinct lines. Sadly, if not outrageously, the DCEC continues to insist on only notifying the chairmen of political organizations. I should write a book about when those chairmen failed to notify me in a timely manner about changes to my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton polling place and to my precinct lines. Sadly, if not outrageously, the location of the current polling place for my precinct discourages those in my precinct from voting. In 2015, the DCEC outrageously gerrymandered my precinct. The DCEC took away about 100 residences on the west side of my precinct and gave me about 100 residences to the east out of Jeanne Ives’s precinct. Initially, the DCEC drew Ives into my precinct, but then, I am told, Ives successfully insisted that she be drawn into Precinct 65 to the southeast. Many, if not most, chairmen of political organizations want to run for government offices and they are under tremendous pressure raise money for their organizations. Consequently, they are likely, if not extremely likely to do the bidding of those who have the most religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in their municipality, in their township, in their county, and in Illinois.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180305/NEWS13/180309939/university-of-chicago-donors-want-their-100-million-back
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wealthy twin brothers Thomas and Timothy Pearson planned to donate $100 million to the University of Chicago for creation of an institute that would study global conflict resolution. Now they’re battling the university in federal court, demanding it return the $22 million they provided since the gift was agreed to in April 2015. They and their foundation allege that the school has breached their agreement on several fronts, from failing to appoint an institute director to organizing a major conference. The contribution was tied at the time it was given with several others for the second-largest donation ever received at the school. “Rather than address these breaches with forthrightness and transparency, the U of C has repeatedly sought to avoid and deceive the foundation regarding these and other failures,” the Pearsons say in the lawsuit filed Feb. 20 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma. “The U of C has failed to deal with the Foundation honestly and in good faith.” The university in a statement called the Pearsons’ allegations “baseless” and says it will “vigorously defend itself” against them. “The university honors its grant agreements with its donors, and it did so with the Pearsons,” it says in the statement. “Further, all academic and hiring decisions are the sole purview of the University and its faculty, guided by the principle of academic freedom.”)

http://northernpublicradio.org/post/democrats-turn-out-chance-flip-gop-districts
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Schraufnagel suggests that Roskam’s stance on a major issue may have had an effect on attracting so many Democrats. “Roskam is one of the architects of the tax-reform legislation that recently passed, and that particular legislation hasn’t been considered very popular,” Schraufnagel said. As far as which way the district leans, he pointed to the Partisan Voting Index, which takes the average vote for president in the previous two election cycles. The 6th District comes out as R+2, meaning it’s a Republican district — but only by two percentage points. “So that’s why I think the Democrats are crowding this field,” Schraufnagel said. “They see this as a real chance to pick up a seat. Indeed, the Cook Political Report and some others rate this as a toss-up and a very potential Republican loss.”)

— Kennedy responds *** Pritzker hit again on the lack of women in his companies (DIERSEN: In 1971, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. Financial industry employers have always been under tremendous pressure to hire, to retain, and to promote young minorities and young females. Since 1997, that, and my bad demographics (born in 1948, White, male, etc.), have frustrated my efforts to get a job in the financial industry appropriate for someone with my salary history, work experience, professional certifications, professional license, and education. I worked for GAO on audits of financial industry regulators 1990-1997 at the GS-13 Step 3-10 levels, currently $106,044-$125,325. I became a Forensic Accountant in 1997, Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, Licensed CPA in 1981, Certified Internal Auditor in 1981, and CPA in 1979. I earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997, a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and an MBA from Loyola in 1976. Further, not only financial industry employers, but all employers view federal employees and federal retirees as being overpaid, lazy, stupid, and even worse things. Further, my former GAO superiors and their supporters continue to do everything that they can to frustrate my job search.)

— Washington’s Fight Over Taxes Is Only Beginning Never mind that “once in a generation” tax bill that passed last year. Congress is headed for years more of battles over taxes, particularly those for individuals. – Jim Tankersley
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/23/business/washingtons-fight-over-taxes-is-only-beginning.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Even if the law survives those challenges, trouble lurks in the years to come. Nearly all of the law’s tax changes for individuals — including a nearly doubled standard deduction and the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions that has outraged blue-state legislators — are set to expire at the end of 2025, and so are some major provisions for businesses. Others won’t adjust for inflation, resulting in growing tax pain for some families in the years ahead. . .For individuals, a repeal push could add confusion to an already murky transition to the new law. The Trump tax overhaul eliminated personal exemptions that taxpayers may claim for themselves and their dependents, but it added a larger standard deduction and an expanded child tax credit. It reduced the cap on the mortgage interest deduction for newly purchased homes, and it limited state and local tax deductions to $10,000 a year — a number that will not rise with inflation. As the law is written, those changes are set to vanish at the end of 2025 — reviving the old system and tax rates for individuals — unless Congress extends them.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lincoln’s biggest accomplishment was probably the abolishment of slavery, an issue he began speaking out against as a young adult. His first statement on the issue is said to have been March 3, 1837, when he said “the institution of slavery is founded on both injustice and bad policy” during a speech at the state legislature when it was in Vandalia. It was an issue he would repeatedly discuss during his political career: When accepting the Republican nomination in June 1858 during a convention in Springfield to be the party’s candidate for U.S. Senate, Lincoln gave his “A house divided against itself cannot stand” speech.)

— Man Up to Marriage – Micah Clark (DIERSEN: In 1978, when I was 29 years old, my Democrat IRS superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious when I married a woman who was earning almost as much as I was and had saved $20,000 ($74,000 in today’s dollars). My IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I should not get any promotions because I was already undeservedly filth rich. In 1980, they wanted me to suffer much more of a pay cut than the $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars that I suffered to transfer from IRS to GAO. Of course, they wanted me to be always ranked in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, and especially so after my wife and I gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents. Of course, the wanted me to take GAO’s $25,000 early retirement buyout in 1993 when I was 45 years old. Of course, they were overjoyed when they succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49. Most of my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government painted themselves as having financial difficulties, most commonly because of the high cost of raising their children, and therefore, that they were in need of pay increases and promotions.)
https://illinoisfamily.org/marriage/man-up-to-marriage/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: While being a good husband is hard work, the paper points out that the benefits of marriage are numerous for both men and women, and even more so for children. Natural marriage also has numerous societal and economic benefits. For example: Married men earn 10-40% more than comparable single men; Marriage increases the earning power of men; Married men are less likely to be fired from a job; The typical married man in his 50’s has three times the financial assets of his unmarried peer.)

The Chinese government plans to launch its Social Credit System in 2020. The aim is to judge the trustworthiness of the country’s 1.3 billion residents by monitoring and evaluating their purchases, who their friends are, how much time they spend watching TV or playing video games, what bills and taxes they pay (or don’t) and where they are at any given time. — Rauner, Ives take shots at each other at GOP luncheon – Andrew Feather
http://www.wsiltv.com/story/37480046/rauner-ives-take-shots-at-each-other-at-gop-luncheon
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and his primary challenger Jeanne Ives continued to take shots at each other Saturday at the Williamson County Republican Women’s Lincoln Day Luncheon. Ives said Rauner betrayed Illinois conservatives by signing what she called liberal legislation, including taxpayer funds to pay for abortions and making Illinois a sanctuary state. “For the last three year he’s lied to everybody about everything,” said Ives. “You can’t trust him for another four years.” Rauner said Ives is the one who is not telling the truth. “Let me be crystal clear: I am adamantly against Illegal immigration,” said Rauner. “I would never allow Illinois to become a sanctuary.” For much of the day the topic centered around one person: House Speaker Mike Madigan As the candidates stressed the importance of replacing longtime house speaker Mike Madigan, Gov. Rauner said he’s the only Republican candidate who can lead that movement. “Democrats want Madigan gone almost as much as Republicans do and this is the time we can bring people together,” said Rauner. “This is the time for a revolution. The people of Illinois stand together and say no more corrupt Chicago political machine.” But Ives claims Rauner had given in to Madigan in the past and would continue to if re-elected. A poll released last month showed Rauner ahead in the primary race by more than 40 points, but a Public Policy Polling survey last week found only 26 percent of Illinoisans have a favorable view of the governor. Illinois primaries will take place March 20.)

http://www.columbiachronicle.com/metro/article_c114f97a-0df5-11e8-8ac6-8326e45b15f6.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In an attempt to capitalize on Rauner’s low approval rating, his primary opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton, Illinois, launched a controversial attack ad Feb. 2, titled “Thank you, Bruce Rauner,” which was met with criticism from activist groups, newspaper editorial boards and even members of her own Republican party. “[Attack ads] can have a beneficial or a negative impact,” said Jim Allen, spokesman at the Chicago Board of Elections. “A certain amount of conflict is good.” It is “par for the course” to attack an incumbent with negative commercials, Mooney said, and Ives’ “Thank you, Bruce Rauner” ad is trying to appeal to President Donald Trump’s voter base. Though Trump lost Illinois in the 2016 presidential election, he did resonate with many downstate Republican voters, and Ives is trying to galvanize those voters, he added. However, Ives’ negative ads are so politically incorrect that they could mobilize voters to check Rauner’s name on the ballot in protest against her candidacy, according to Mooney. Historically, far-right conservatives in statewide Illinois primaries only account for anywhere between 25–30 percent of the vote, and the majority tend to be socially moderate, he added.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is a lost cause. He’s made his bed with his proven record of dishonesty, incompetence and betrayal. And he certainly can’t expect President Trump’s help at this point. Rauner isn’t savvy enough to seek it in any case. Republican Primary challenger Jeanne Ives could easily defeat Rauner. Ives’ problem is she hasn’t really earned President Trump’s support or that of his supporters. It’s still not too late but she would have to make significant changes. Right now she doesn’t seem to be truly behind the President or his winning agenda. She’s not a Never-Trumper like Rauner, but her support is lukewarm at best, as evidenced by the way she’s blown her most obvious path to victory thus far. History says that mid-term elections are usually bad for an incoming President’s party. But I don’t think that will be the case this year for Republicans nationally. Trump has saved the GOP from itself. However, Illinois is likely to buck the trend. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time. President Trump should be a huge asset for any Illinois Republican running this year. However, laziness and horrible judgment by the local yokels are squandering the potential. Failure to stand with the President against the Left and its media toadies, coupled with refusal to help educate voters about the winning Trump agenda are turning an asset into a liability. Clearly we’re saddled with a lot of cowards in Illinois politics. That’s not seriously debatable. But one would think even cowards would be smart enough to act in their own self-interest. The Trump agenda represents the only serious plan out there for rebuilding America and the work is well underway. Smart politicians in other states across the country get it. Their states are already reaping positive results from the Trump economy. And they’ll continue to welcome some of the best and brightest from Illinois who decide they can no longer tolerate this state’s incompetence and dysfunction. Illinois Republicans have only one card left to play and that’s the Trump Card. Played well the GOP could restore hope to all Illinoisans from Cairo to Chicago and beyond.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The proposal would end regular tenure and merit-based raises for more than 1.5 million federal government employees. Instead, the plan will call on government agencies to reward employees with performance-based raises and other incentives. . .In addition, the plan seeks to phase out the traditional pension-based retirement plan and adopt employee-contribution plans found in the private sector. Overall, the plan seeks to bring employee pay and benefits to the modern age. . .The Associated Press noted that moving to performance-based work could lead to the termination of many government employees with poor work reviews. . .What are government employees saying? According to USA Today, unions representing federal government employees are not a fan of the changes. David Cox, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, said the changes “wipe out due process rights for employees.” Cox also expressed concern government leadership would use the changes to punish women, minorities and political dissidents. “He seems to be interested in political revenge by firing people,” Cox said of Trump. “The government is not a family business that you get to be in total control of.”)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: My wife and I have paid the marriage penalty big time since we got married in 1978. Under the new Republican tax law, if there was no marriage penalty, instead of $10,000, the SALT cap would be $20,000 for married filing jointly.

— Federal pay may take hit in 2019 budget – Joe Davidson (DIERSEN: Since 1989, the Democrats who run GAO have used pay-for-performance (PFP) a) to hire, retain, and promote those who are Democrat, minority, female, and/or younger and b) to get rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran. To get rid of me, my Democrat GAO superiors in GAO’s Chicago office always ranked me in the lower half of my coworkers for PFP purposes.)
https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Federal-pay-may-take-hit-in-2019-budget-12606628.php

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Associated Press reported Trump will propose a pay-for-performance plan for most feds, a notion that makes union leaders seethe. Performance-based pay sounds like a reasonable idea, but federal employees remember it from the National Security Personnel System at the Defense Department under the last Republican president, George W. Bush. The implementation was so troubled, the buy-in from employees so poor, and the program so beleaguered with charges of racial discrimination that Congress abolished the program. Now Trump reportedly wants to install a much broader pay-for-performance system. He won’t get it without a tough fight from federal labor leaders and their Democratic allies. A pay-for-performance system would be a “nail in the coffin of the apolitical professional civil service,” said J. David Cox Sr., president of the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal employee union. In addition to the experience-based complaints against performance-based pay, labor leaders warn against Trump’s twisted notion of narcissistic fidelity. “Does anybody want a system that allows financial rewards – funded by taxpayers – to be provided exclusively to those deemed loyal to the administration?” Cox asked. “Does anybody want a pay system that denies pay adjustments to people considered disloyal to the administration? Pity the EPA scientist whose work demonstrates the existence of climate change.” The president’s reported proposal would save the government $10 billion over 10 years, which means that’s what it would cost federal employees. It would apply to about 1.5 million federal workers out of about 2 million. It is not clear who would be excluded. “In reality, performance-based pay in the federal government is a cost-containment tool, nothing more,” Randy Erwin, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees, said in an email. “Once federal workers’ pay becomes ambiguous, it becomes easier to whittle away.”)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Some who helped Arthur Jones get on the ballot say they didn’t know his politics – Frank Main (DIERSEN: Who are the Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains in the precincts in which Jones gathered petition signatures? Do the Republican voters in those precincts keep their Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains posted on what is going on in their precincts? Who are the officers of the Republican township parties in the townships in which Jones gathered petition signatures? Do the Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains in those townships keep the officers of their Republican township parties posted on what is going on in their precincts? I have been gathering petition signatures in my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton since 1999 for myself and for all the Republican candidates who seek to be on Republican primary ballots in my precinct. I would hope that if a Jones-type candidate sought petition signatures from Republicans in my precinct, they would let me know. I would certainly let the Milton Township Republican Central Committee officers know.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/arthur-jones-nominating-petitions-bridgeview-holocaust-denier-anti-semitic-views/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On an unusually warm afternoon last fall, residents in Bridgeview opened their doors to a stranger. Arthur Jones was going house to house in the southwest suburb on Oct. 5, rounding up signatures for his primary election petition for Congress. Voters signed it after Jones told them he was hoping to run as a Republican against Democrat Rep. Dan Lipinski in the 3rd Congressional District. What Jones didn’t say is that he’s an avowed anti-Semite, Holocaust denier and the former leader of the New American Nazi Party. “He seemed like a nice guy,” said Michal Bodyziak, whose wife, Anna, signed her name to the petition. Now Jones is the sole GOP candidate in the 3rd District on the primary ballot March 20, which means he is on track to be the Republican Party nominee in the November general election. On a 10-degree evening last week, residents in Bridgeview opened their doors once again to tell a Chicago Sun-Times reporter how Jones went about collecting some of the 603 signatures he needed. Of the six people who agreed to be interviewed, none had heard of Jones until he rang their doorbells. Jones, 70, of Lyons, is now the subject of national and international news after the Sun-Times reported on Feb. 4 that the he was poised to clinch the nomination. In an interview with the Sun-Times, Jones has said he’s in charge of an organization called the American First Committee, whose membership is limited to “any white American citizen of European, non-Jewish descent.” But while he was collecting signatures, Jones didn’t mention any of that. “He just told us he was all about the people,” Michal Bodyziak said. Bodyziak said he and his wife are immigrants from Poland. Jones didn’t say that he denies there was a Holocaust in which 6 million Jews died, many of them in Poland. “No, he said none of that,” Anna Bodyziak said. According to her husband, Jones said he “wanted to help the state make everything better, lower taxes and that. Yes, it was very positive.” When a reporter showed the couple video snippets of Jones’ controversial statements on Jews, they winced. They said they could never support Jones for Congress after seeing that. A neighbor down the block also gave Jones his signature. The man said he’d never heard of Jones, either, but he agreed to sign the petition “because I want people to run for office. If I knew he stood for any of that, I wouldn’t have signed.” About a mile away, Medardo Elizalde was sitting on his couch when his son opened the door to a reporter. The son said his father mostly speaks Spanish and translated for him. He asked his dad if he remembered signing Jones’ petition. Jones had said people wanted to keep him off the ballot, Elizalde recalled. Elizalde said he gave his signature so Jones would go away. Jones managed to collect 834 signatures in Bedford Park, Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge, Countryside, Hickory Hills, Homer Glen, Justice, La Grange, Oak Lawn, Orland Park, Palos Hills, Stickney, Summit and Worth — but none in Chicago. “I waited on the last day, Dec. 4, to file my signatures. I turned them in, fully expecting for an objection or that there would be a candidate that they’re putting up against me,” he has told the Sun-Times. Though GOP officials in his own party have now repudiated Jones and his candidacy, he still thinks he’s got a shot even though the district is overwhelmingly Democratic. Lipinski, of Western Springs, faces Marie Newman, of LaGrange, in the Democratic primary. Said Jones, “Listen, I don’t go to all this damn trouble if I didn’t believe I had a chance to win.”)
