(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Homeowners Defense Association (HDA) has launched a website to counter the damage it sees as being done to homeowners across the state by virtue of the runaway property tax system. “DefendHomeowners.com will seek to mobilize homeowners by making them aware of how the state’s tax system is impacting their home,” HDA Executive Director Heidi Holan told the DuPage Policy Journal. “We will be advocating for tax reform and making people aware of what they can do about the current system.” With Illinois residents paying some of the highest property taxes in the country, Holan argues that the situation has reached a crisis point. “High property taxes are the biggest driver of all the outmigration you’re seeing across the state,” she said. “We want the cap to be somewhere around 1 percent; right now it’s at about 2.3 percent, or more than twice as high as where the national average is.” Holan said homeowners can start fighting back by making themselves aware of what options they have and to understand what level of power they hold by banding together. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republican National Committee is expected to approve a resolution condemning racism and white supremacy at its summer meeting in Nashville — but don’t call it a rebuke of President Trump. “This has nothing to do with the president,” said the resolution’s sponsor, New Jersey RNC committeeman Bill Palatucci. “This is the RNC saying that racism and bigotry have no place in America.” Palatucci, an attorney who served as general counsel to Trump’s presidential transition committee, said that he began drafting the resolution on August 13, the day after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville ended with the murder of a counterprotester. “The core issue was for us as RNC members to clearly and loudly denounce white supremacists,” explained Palatucci. “There can be no hesitation for the Party of Lincoln.” The resolution itself makes no mention of Trump or the president’s multiple reactions to Charlottesville, which led to three presidential advisory councils being disbanded as their members quit in protest. Instead, it states that “the racist beliefs of Nazis, the KKK, white supremacists and others are completely inconsistent with the Republican Party’s platform,” and urges that “swift and certain justice be meted out to domestic terrorists.” Most of the remaining text focuses on the history of the party, and the need for colorblind policy and politics. “We recall that the Republican Party was founded in the struggle against slavery and a rejection of the racial beliefs underlying the institution of slavery,” the resolution reads. “The Republican Party subsequently led the fight to assure all human beings have equal standing before the law, promoting instead the foundational idea that each person be judged as an individual on merit and not on the color of skin or other circumstance of birth.” The RNC’s resolution nonetheless breaks from the president by condemning white nationalists specifically and not dovetailing into criticism of the left. It’s the latest of several Republican responses that have taken that tone, but have often been buried by coverage of the president. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel gave the party’s first official response to Charlottesville at an ill-timed August 14 event in Detroit designed to demonstrate the party’s ongoing outreach to black voters. “White supremacy, neo-Nazi, KKK and hate speech and bigotry are not welcome and [do] not have a home in the Republican Party,” McDaniel told reporters, as black Republicans waited for a closed-press roundtable to begin. “This isn’t a partisan issue. On Tuesday, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) told reporters that a bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest, the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, should be removed from the state capitol complex. But the leading Republican candidates for governor, including Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), stopped short of that, suggesting that the issue needed further debate in the Republican-controlled state legislature. And further away, the leadership of the Democratic National Committee accused Republicans of distracting from a crisis that they’d enabled long before Trump’s victory. “The Republican Party, led by President Trump, has cultivated a culture of hate through their rhetoric and policies,” said DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa. “A vote on a resolution doesn’t fix the systemic problems within the Republican party. When will they take responsibility, denounce racism and stop pursuing divisive policies like voter identification laws and extreme immigration reforms?” Republican officials, who entered the Nashville meeting celebrating a historic level of control in Washington and states, said that their resolution would at least clear up where they stood and where the president needed to arrive. “I think the vote on the resolution will be unanimous and I support it,” said Steve Duprey, an RNC committeeman from New Hampshire. “I do think it is useful to remind America that our party condemns all of these hate groups, and that while the President may have not articulated it as well as he could have initially, he too has been forceful in condemning racists, supremacists, the alt right, Nazis, and other hate groups.”)

On Tuesday, the governor’s office confirmed he’d sign the immigration and voter registration measures on Monday. The immigration legislation would prohibit police in Illinois from detaining or arresting a person based on their immigration status or on federal immigration detainer. Because while surrounding states add jobs, Illinois grinds private-sector concerns in its gears. The nation generated a 1.3 percent average annual growth rate from 2006-16, but Illinois managed just 0.4 percent, according to James Broughel of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Wisconsin outstripped Illinois with a 0.7 percent rate, and Indiana’s was more than double this state’s, at 0.9 percent. In July, the state’s unemployment rate ticked up. That’s the same month that Springfield passed a 32 percent personal income tax hike — inviting more people and businesses to head for the exits. Thank you, Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Michael Madigan. And what about those promised reforms, such as overhauling workers’ compensation, that could persuade more businesses to come, stay or expand? Or pruning Illinois’ wildly overgrown local governments to ease taxpayer burdens — two of the items on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s pro-jobs agenda? What, say the ranking Democrats, us worry? We recently sized up this state’s economic competitiveness and quality of life in a series of measures. In capsule, Illinois leads the nation in the worst ways. You know about the lousy credit rating, the unfunded pension liabilities, the onerous regulations on employers. Once a colossus that overshadowed its Midwest neighbors, Illinois in eclipse can’t escape the shadow. Other states gain by offering a sunnier jobs climate. Wisconsin recently landed what could be a $10 billion Foxconn LCD panel factory that will employ as many as 13,000 people. How did Wisconsin prevail? By being close to Illinois but not Illinois. Foxconn sought to exploit Illinois’ assets — its transportation and logistical systems, its energy reliability — but avoid its ever-rising taxes, crushing public debts and never-ending political brink-dancing. Foxconn chose a state that does the basics, like pass a budget every year. In a state in eclipse, though, even that task is too difficult. In a state in eclipse, taxes rise with no offsetting reforms. In a state in eclipse, voters return the same failed pols to the legislature decade after decade in a triumph of naive hope over costly experience.)

A couple of media outlets filed open records requests to get emails sent by first lady DIANA RAUNER on a state email account. It was not a question of trying to get emails sent on a personal account. One reason was to determine if the first lady had a hand in all of the recent staff changes, as many suspect. Anyway, according to Politico, the request was denied citing two exemptions in the state’s open records law. One exempts communication with an attorney that would not be revealed in court, and the other covers preliminary drafts, notes and etc. If you’ve used the Freedom of Information Act, you know that the preliminary drafts exemption can be used to conceal a whole lot of stuff. The news outlets did stories about the denials on Tuesday. The whole thing seemed to be on the governor’s mind Tuesday afternoon when he did an availability at the fair. “Reporters have been calling asking if my wife has been very involved in the staff changes that have gone on in my office over the last month or two,” he said. “I think the inquiries, the questions themselves are pathetic. I think they are terrible. I think it just shows how desperate my political opponents are to try to attack my through attacking my wife.
