http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/obamas-post-presidential-office-to-be-in-washington-d-c/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Barack Obama will open an office in Washington, D.C., after he leaves the White House on Jan. 20, and the Chicago-based Obama Foundation is considering opening a branch office here, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned. “As a former president, President Obama will have office space in Washington, D.C., when he leaves office,” said Amy Brundage, an Obama spokeswoman, referring to the official office funded by taxpayers for former presidents. The federal government covers the costs of offices and a small staff for former presidents, plus a pension and other compensation for travel, an acknowledgement of the role — albeit not official — former presidents serve after they are no longer in office. For example, according to the General Services Administration, in FY2015, former President George W. Bush received $796,000 to cover health benefits, travel costs, office space, telephone costs, postage, printing costs, other services, supplies and materials, and equipment. “This was the highest amount of any former President for that year,” the Congressional Research Service noted in a March 2016 report covering the federal benefits provided to former presidents and their widows. As a former president, Obama will receive a $205,700 annual pension — and that’s after just eight years on the job. The pension is paid monthly with eligibility beginning at noon on Jan. 20, after President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office. Obama will get his pension check monthly. The Obama family is remaining in Washington after they move out of the White House, renting a home in the Kalorama neighborhood here. The family is staying in Washington until Sasha, 15, a sophomore at the private Sidwell Friends school here, graduates from high school. So while Obama and first lady Michelle are locating their Obama Center, a library and museum complex, in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, Obama’s taxpayer funded office, for now at least, will also remain in Washington. The Washington Post reported that Obama is renting space in a building owned by an environmental group, the World Wildlife Fund, at 1250 24th St. NW, not far from the Kalorama residence. Former presidents have no rules binding them when it comes to locating their taxpayer-funded offices. The General Services Administration is authorized to write rent checks for space anywhere in the U.S. The location does not have to be connected to the presidential library or foundation headquarters.)

— Wall Street’s old, unwanted bond salesmen find a home in Chicago – Bloomberg  (DIERSEN: What is your position on age discrimination? Virtually all my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes promote age discrimination.  Many of them focus on getting rid of older people like me, and especially older people like me who are White, male, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-chicago-bond-salesmen-20161209-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Arthur Main learned the hard way that Wall Street is a young person’s game. After a quarter-century at Morgan Stanley, Main — like countless old-school types who came of age in the ’80s — was kicked to the curb as banks turn to youth and technology in the face of tighter regulation and lower profits. And so, at 54, he’s working at one of the last stops in high finance: a small West Loop firm called TJM Institutional Services. He considers himself lucky. “Being my age is a hindrance for a lot of people,” says Main, keeping his eyes fixed on charts and chat boxes arrayed across his computer screens. “They don’t continue to learn, they don’t embrace technology, they try to fit that square peg in the round hole, and their skill set doesn’t apply anymore.”)
— Stress: The thing that’s killing poor Americans – Peter R. Orszag  (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes focus on promoting stress.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-poor-americans-death-stress-20161212-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Stress, I’ve long suspected, may explain why lifespans have been lengthening for high-income Americans but have remained the same or even shortened for low-income and middle-income people. A new analysis from the Hamilton Project released Monday adds important evidence: Biomarkers of stress have risen much more rapidly for low-income people than for high-income ones. The most recent national data show that life expectancy declined in 2015. Although these statistics are not broken down by income, it’s a good bet that the greatest declines were concentrated among lower- and middle-income people, because for decades gaps in life expectancy by income have been widening — as a National Academy of Sciences panel I co-chaired documented. Our panel was unable to explain why this has been happening, however. A sharper decline in smoking among high-income people is one partial explanation, but this and other identifiable factors can’t account for most of the growing longevity gap. And so I’ve come to suspect that the hidden factor is stress: As income inequality has increased, life has become substantially more stressful for low- and moderate-income families than it is for high-income families, and prolonged exposure to such stress is literally killing people.)

Find people with whom you click and ask them to lunch or Starbucks instead of retreating into email during breaks. Ask them what they wish they’d known when they started, and listen closely. Social ties at the office will be critical, so prioritize them; it’ll make your life infinitely easier later on.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps say “Trump rejects CIA intelligence on Russia, daily briefings.”
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/lynn-sweet-trump-rejects-cia-intelligence-on-russia-daily-briefings/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A few days ago, I talked to a former presidential briefer who said Trump will likely present a challenge to brief, because he seems to have hardened views based on his gut. Now the job will be even more challenging because Trump told Wallace he will take briefings only “when I need it.” And after that, if anything changes, “Immediately call me. . . . I’m like a smart person” and “I don’t have to be told the same thing” every day,” Trump said. So what we have here are two interrelated issues when it comes to Trump and intelligence: He starts his presidency skeptical about the information he will get — and remarkably unconcerned about receiving intelligence on a daily basis. While this may not develop into a Trump war on the intelligence community, it’s not an optimal start.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But if you listen to the context in which Trump made the comment, you wouldn’t necessarily come away with the idea that the president-elect is somehow making light of national security. Trump said he does receive the classified briefings less frequently than other presidents-elects or presidents have, but offers what appears to be a perfectly reasonable explanation. “I get when I need it. First of all, these are very good people that are giving me the briefings. And I say if something should change from this point, immediately call me. I’m available on one minute’s notice,” Trump said. “I don’t need to be told . . . the same thing every day, every morning – same words. ‘Sir, nothing has changed. Let’s go over it again.’ I don’t need that,” he added, noting that Vice President-elect Mike Pence and others on his team are receiving daily intelligence briefings.)

— New Mothers Derailed by Drugs Find Support in New Hampshire Home – KATHARINE Q. SEELYE  (DIERSEN: One could compare and contrast this home with the one proposed in Wheaton.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/11/us/new-mothers-pregnant-opioids-treatment-counseling-new-hampshire.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The young women, soon to be mothers, gathered around a big kitchen table, chatting excitedly about due dates and baby names and even morning sickness. But these were not typical expectant mothers. They had used opioids, mostly heroin and fentanyl. Many had been incarcerated. Few had families they could turn to for help, and the fathers of their babies were out of the picture. Most of these women — tough, sassy, vulnerable — were destined to go through their pregnancies in a shelter, jail or even on the street, fending for themselves as they had often done before. Instead, here they were last week, in the cozy kitchen of a classic 1856 New England farmhouse where the aroma of fresh-baked cornbread filled the air. Set before them was a comfort lunch of tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. It was opening day at Hope on Haven Hill, a private house that its owner, Dr. Colene Arnold, had moved her own family out of so these women could move in. “This place is crazy pretty,” said an awe-struck Ariel Robbins Perkins, 24, who is 12 weeks pregnant and arrived here straight from jail. (The New York Times conducted a Facebook Live interview with Ariel that day.) Hope on Haven Hill, financed by $480,000 in federal funds and more than $150,000 in private donations, provides a safe, supportive environment where eight women who are either pregnant or newly postpartum can live while receiving comprehensive treatment and counseling for substance use disorders. Their days will be highly structured, with group therapy, private counseling, childbirth classes, life skills coaching, recovery support services and enrichment programs. Medicaid will reimburse Hope on Haven Hill for the services. Because opioid users are vulnerable to relapsing after they deliver, the women can stay at Hope on Haven Hill for up to a year after giving birth. If they have other children under 5, those children can live here, too. This is part of Haven Hill’s philosophy of keeping mothers and babies together and alleviating the widespread fear among pregnant drug users that if they seek help, their children will be taken away. New Hampshire has two other small facilities for pregnant women with substance use issues. But as the opioid epidemic has worsened, both have long waiting lists. The need is growing, as evidenced by the sharp rise in the number of babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome, in which the newborn suffers withdrawal from the mother’s drug use. In 2000, the syndrome was diagnosed in 1.5 babies per 1,000 births in New Hampshire; by 2012, that rate had soared to 15 babies per 1,000 births, said Dr. Bonny L. Whalen, a newborn pediatrician at Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. The rate now, she said, is even higher. New Hampshire’s rate is almost triple the national average, but it is still a major problem across the country. As of 2012, the federal government says, one baby was born suffering from opioid withdrawal every 25 minutes. That national rate, too, is higher now. The federal government said last week that opioid deaths had continued to surge in 2015 and for the first time in the nation’s history surpassed the number of deaths from gun homicides. Emma Lee, a tiny infant born with neonatal abstinence syndrome, was the first baby to arrive at Hope on Haven Hill on opening day last week. She had spent all 32 days of her life in a neonatal intensive care unit because her mother, Amanda, 31, who was homeless for the first six months of her pregnancy, had used heroin for most of that time and then went on methadone. At birth, babies like Emma Lee suddenly lose their opioid supply. Some go into withdrawal and require methadone or morphine to control their symptoms until they can be weaned off. “Her withdrawals were pretty severe,” said Amanda, who did not want her last name used, as she cradled Emma Lee in their sunny bedroom at Hope on Haven Hill. While in the hospital, the baby had difficulty eating. Her hands and legs shook with tremors. “It was really hard as a mom to see your new baby go through that,” Amanda said. “I know for myself, I know what it feels like to withdraw, and it’s pretty terrible to imagine a tiny helpless baby going through that.” Hope on Haven Hill does not accept active drug users. Most of the women have only recently stopped using opioids — in New Hampshire these days, that usually means heroin and fentanyl. But they cannot detox, because going through withdrawal causes dehydration and increases the risk of miscarriage or of the mother’s self-medicating with opioids to stave off the painful effects of withdrawal. So most of these women are on some kind of medication assisted treatment, either methadone or buprenorphine, which is marketed as Suboxone or Subutex. Erica Vallee, 24, who is five months pregnant, is among those at Hope on Haven Hill on Subutex. She has used heroin since she was 18 and has been in and out of rehab and jail. She says becoming pregnant was “the only thing” that made her stop using illegal drugs. But like others here, she is afraid of relapsing. “I can’t be left alone because I don’t trust myself,” she said as she scrubbed the dishes in the kitchen sink after lunch. The hope is that the stable, nurturing environment of Haven Hill will provide enough support and encouragement for these women to maintain their sobriety. Dr. Arnold, who owns the Haven Hill house, planned the program with Kerry Norton, a prenatal nurse with whom she worked at a nearby women’s health center. About two years ago, the health center started seeing more and more pregnant women with addiction issues who were not being treated for one reason or another. “They didn’t have prenatal care,” said Dr. Arnold, an obstetrician and gynecologist. “They’d show up at the birth center and deliver and have nothing, and their child would be taken out of their custody and they’d be out on the street again.” Among those who showed up at the health center was Abi Lizotte. She was homeless, pregnant and had been using heroin for at least six years, after her older sister had died from an overdose. Ms. Norton, whose own son had overdosed around this same time, took an interest in her, but Ms. Lizotte skipped appointments and Ms. Norton could not find a treatment program that would take her. “I’m an educated nurse who knows the system, and I couldn’t navigate it,” Ms. Norton recalled. “I thought, ‘What is everyone else doing?’ And it blew my mind when I realized what everyone else was doing, which was dying.” In June 2015, after a lengthy and exhaustive struggle, Ms. Norton got Ms. Lizotte — by this point eight months pregnant — into treatment in Nashua. That night, Ms. Norton, an insomniac, went home and took to Facebook, where she asked if anyone knew Ellen DeGeneres or Oprah Winfrey or anyone rich enough to establish a treatment program for pregnant women derailed by drugs. Dr. Arnold, a fellow insomniac, wrote back: “I don’t know Ellen and I don’t know Oprah, but I have this house and I’ve wanted to do this same thing for three years now.” The two started brainstorming and conceived the plan for Hope on Haven Hill. They credit Ms. Lizotte, now 24, sober and the mother of a healthy boy, as their inspiration. Since then, they have overcome mounds of red tape, secured the home’s financing and achieved nonprofit charitable status. In September, Dr. Arnold moved her family — her husband, two children, two dogs and a cat — to a smaller home while workers renovated the Haven Hill house to meet the building codes for a residential center. Workers refinished the wide-plank pine floors, and volunteers came in with buckets of paint as new furniture, beds and linens arrived. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week, Timothy Rourke, the chairman of the New Hampshire Governor’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, said in an interview that while there was much to celebrate, it was important to remember that the state is in the middle of a crisis. “We’re still looking at a death rate that is way too high and wait lists that are way too long, and many people are asking for help that doesn’t come fast enough,” he said. “Hope on Haven Hill should be a call for all of us to do better.” Its doors barely open, Hope on Haven Hill already has a lengthy waiting list of its own.)

DAILY HERALD
— Democrats seek to unseat Bolingbrook mayor Roger Claar who hosted Trump fundraiser – Kerry Lester
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161208/news/161209017/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three-term Will County board member Jackie Traynere was part of a group protesting at the fundraiser at the Bolingbrook Golf Club and said that got the ball rolling for her to file nominating petitions to run in the April 4 election. “The group continued to meet, and they said, you know, it’s time. Somebody needs to run,” Traynere said. “I thought about it, and remembered my father always taught me, ‘Don’t point your finger at someone because then there are three of them pointing back at you.’ Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.” Traynere’s been a Bolingbrook resident since 1970, works as a union organizer and owns a cleaning business with her husband. Claar, who’s making plans to attend Trump’s inauguration Jan. 20, says his 20 years as mayor show he has the backing of the local electorate. He also points out that municipal elections are nonpartisan. “There’s no such thing as a Republican pothole or Democratic pothole,” he says. “These are local issues, not national or international or even state (issues).” Helping out  Democrats offering to help Traynere include members of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s campaign, U.S. Rep. Bill Foster’s office and the Will County Democrats. They point to election results showing more than 60 percent of Bolingbrook residents voted for Clinton in the November election. But it’s likely Claar also is picking up more help. “I believe there’s a good support base for me out there,” he says.)

— Richard Spencer is a threat Republicans must purge – THOMAS MCARDLE
http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/campaign/309227-richard-spencers-white-nationalists-are-a-threat-republicans-must
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But race is not why immigration – both legal and illegal — must be significantly reduced over the long term. A 44-page January 2014 report authored by the late Phyllis Schlafly and Eagle Forum, “How Mass (Legal) Immigration Dooms a Conservative Republican Party,” laid out what’s really at stake. “Immigrants and their children are more supportive of government expansion, Obamacare, affirmative action, gun control, greater environmental regulation, and of other issues championed by the Left,” Schlafly warned, buttressing the case with mounds of polling data. It’s not the color of their skin, but rather the content of their political creed.  Today, even the white Europeans Spencer romanticizes would, as new U.S. citizens, help their Mexican-American fellow immigrants elect liberal Democrats and impose lots more socialism on the Land of the Free. When President Lyndon Johnson signed the 1965 immigration act, a grinning Bobby and Teddy Kennedy at his side in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, he assured the nation it was “not a revolutionary bill.  It does not affect the lives of millions.”  Yet in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s combined, fewer than 7 million immigrants came to America; after the immigration act, from the ‘70s to today, 35 million arrived here, including nearly 14 million in the single decade from 2001 to 2010. Not only was it a revolution, it’s been the biggest voter recruitment drive for the Democratic Party in history. If Trump is to lead a successful counter-revolution and stop this ongoing disaster, he cannot be tainted by those falsely hailing him as an ethnic cleanser. Decades ago, William F. Buckley purged the Birchers and other genuine “deplorables” within conservatism so the right could rise to power. Trump, or his surrogates, are similarly going to have to purge Spencer and his minions – and do it before the TV cameras – if the new president is to keep his promise to regain control of who comes to and shapes America.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: During the campaign, Trump promised a tightening of the federal government workforce; reportedly, his allies are working on plans to freeze hiring, end automatic raises, make it easier to fire incompetent workers, and convert federal retirement benefits to resemble more of a private sector, 401(k)-style plan. According to The Washington Post, Trump will likely seek counsel from Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who famously angered public sector unions in 2011 when he ended mandatory union dues, required public employees to begin paying a portion of their health and retirement benefits, and all but eliminated collective bargaining for government employees.)

— Help Wanted at Google  The tech giant is looking for someone who can speak Republican. – Editorial (DIERSEN: Should I apply for this job?  Who in Illinois would my critics/opponents want to apply for this job?)
http://www.wsj.com/articles/help-wanted-at-google-1481070488
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The reality of a Donald Trump Presidency has been hard to process for much of Washington, but one example is especially notable. The good progressives at Google have announced they are looking for someone who can communicate with those strange humanlike life-forms: conservatives. Google recently posted a job opening (https://www.google.com/about/careers/search#!t=jo&jid=227695001&) in Washington for a manager of “Conservative Outreach and Public Policy Partnerships.” The employee “will act as Google’s liaison to conservative, libertarian and free market groups” and will be “part organizer, part advocate and part policy wonk.” Ideal candidates have eight years experience—and have attended at least one but no more than three Tea Party rallies. OK, we made that last one up. The company has been known to hire Republican politicos in the past, but Google will need greater political diversity soon. The company’s lobbyists, executives and other affiliates visited the Obama White House 427 times between 2009 and November 2015. The top lobbyist stopped by more than many of her counterparts in the industry combined. Google no doubt planned to continue wielding influence in a Hillary Clinton Administration. Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google’s parent company, advised John Podesta and Mrs. Clinton’s campaign on digital strategy and targeting voters, though perhaps not in the Upper Midwest. A report from the Campaign for Accountability turned up 57 people affiliated with both Mrs. Clinton (whether her campaign, foundation or State Department) and Google entities. Now Google will have to scramble to preserve its enormous influence on everything from copyrights to privacy regulation. Whether Mr. Trump will indulge rent-seeking from Google and friends is anyone’s guess. But maybe Google’s Republican unicorn can host a staff seminar on the free-market philosophy that made the tech giant possible.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/on-leadership/wp/2016/12/02/boycotts-backlash-breitbart-u-s-companies-get-dragged-into-a-volatile-political-climate/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Froot Loops and Frosted Flakes aren’t normally the kind of brands to get caught in the political crosshairs. But in the aftermath of a combustible election, Kellogg cereals and a growing number of consumer brands have suddenly found themselves the unexpected target of boycotts and hot-tempered rhetoric. Kellogg said this week it would pull advertising from Breitbart News, the far-right web site that its critics say trades in racist and sexist content. In response, Breitbart called on readers to boycott the company, devoted a chunk of its front page to stories about Kellogg or the boycott, and sparked a social media outcry. Consumers on both the right and the left piled in, saying they would either stop buying the company’s products — or conversely, stock up on them. The maker of Eggo waffles and Pop-Tarts is only the latest American corporation caught in the crossfire. In the weeks since the election, companies have navigated a sharply politicized environment, one that has entailed calls for boycotts, explosive social media responses to executive comments and thorny interactions between front-line workers and their customers. “I’ve never seen anything like this before, where companies find themselves so open to attack for their points of view or their speech,” said Leslie Gaines-Ross, chief reputation strategist for the public relations firm Weber Shandwick. “Companies are now much more in the fray and seen as political targets.”)

http://federalnewsradio.com/workforce/2016/12/survive-agencys-new-trump-appointee/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In late January 2017, when the first of President-elect Donald Trump’s 4,000 political employees report for work, there already will be plenty of angst built up – both by the appointees and by the career civil servants they will oversee.   Thing are going to be different. Many of the appointees will bring different policies and different styles. Most importantly, they will represent a new President who openly and frequently spoke with disdain about the federal workforce and ran on a platform of bringing change. If you’re a senior executive, you want to survive in the new administration and you want your agency to succeed.  But dealing with the arrival of an unknown entity with an unknown agenda can be daunting. Ira Goldstein, a long-time federal executive and consultant, provided some tools for both sides in this new partnership in his recent book The Federal Management Playbook. He offered some practical advice for federal workers – things that can and must be done. To begin with, Goldstein wants to put the federal workforce at ease about dealing with Trump’s declarations about “draining the swamp.” “After 46 years in and around the federal government, I discovered even through there was a lot of publicity around our nation that government doesn’t work well, what you see after a period of time is that many things really do work well. Planes fly safely over our country. Social Security checks get out on time,” Goldstein said in an interview on the Federal Drive with Tom Temin. “Government is important. It’s not going to go away and it’s enormously complex. We’ve got to do better. We need good ‘bureaucrats’ ― skilled, committed, experienced career officials. We also need political direction and oversight, and these days we need competent consultants and contractors.” As a former U.S. assistant comptroller general and chief operating officer of the Government Accountability Office, and founder of Deloitte’s U.S. Federal Practice, Goldstein has seen many transitions. His Playbook hammers home ways and means of working with the incoming transition team “to achieve the effective and efficient execution of public policies that we want and deserve.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you want to read Reboot Illinois, the political journalism website and daily newsletter, now it’s going to cost you. After four years of free access to its readers, the digital source for news, commentary and analysis about state and local government will be shifting next week to a paid subscription model. “We’re moving from a public affairs journalism organization primarily supported by seed investments and advertising to one supported mainly by your subscriptions,” publisher Madeleine Doubek emailed readers Thursday. “We started Reboot Illinois four years ago with the help of some seed funding from prominent Chicagoans who were concerned, like we were, that citizens were not getting reliable and fair reporting, in-depth analysis, or a wide range of commentary and infographics about our local and state governments in Illinois,” she wrote. “Our mission has been and remains to inform, engage and activate Illinoisans about the governments we all own.” Reboot Illinois was bankrolled in 2012 by hedge fund manager Anne Dias, founder of Aragon Global Management (and ex-wife of billionaire Ken Griffin), who hired the editorial and technology teams, and oversaw the platform’s initial digital and marketing efforts. Earlier this year Dias sold her ownership interest to AFK Media Group, a Chicago-based investor group headed by entrepreneur Anthony Knierim. Doubek said Thursday that AFK Media remains “fully behind” the mission. “From the start, Reboot Illinois was always envisioned as a self-supporting, profitable media firm and this is another step to get us closer to that goal,” she told me. (In her email to readers, Doubek noted: “In the past decade, the rates advertisers pay throughout digital media have been dropping fast. Advertising simply isn’t enough to support our work any longer.”) At the outset, subscribers will be charged $12 per month or a discounted rate of $120 a year. Current readers will be offered a 50 percent discount for the first four months, or an annual rate of $100 if they sign up before year end. In July Reboot Illinois partnered with PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking initiative launched by Poynter Institute’s Tampa Bay Times.)

In an emotional and rambling Facebook post he made at 4 a.m. Thursday, Jackson wrote that “the great 2016 pardoning of the masses will create a resounding echo in history and will mark you as the greatest Christian president ever to serve.” He added, “Mr. President, for those Americans who have traipsed through the criminal justice system and transcended transgression by duly serving time, the outcome should be clear. An official declaration of TIME SERVED, for each and every eligible member of the American family, from the highest office of the land is the only response congruent with the redemption story of Christ. “Truly, Mr. President, with a presidential pardon equally monumental to, and greater in scope than, the Emancipation Proclamation the legacy of Barack Hussein Obama II will be one of faith, hope and love.”)

http://dailycaller.com/2016/12/01/osu-terrorist-was-enrolled-in-class-on-diversity-microaggressions/
(FROM THE ACTICLE: Ohio State University (OSU) attacker Abdul Artan was enrolled in a class focused on diversity and microaggressions, and was taught that Muslims were an oppressed minority just two weeks before his car-and-knife assault on his fellow students. For the fall term at OSU, Artan was taking a class titled “Crossing Identity Boundaries,” offered by OSU’s Higher Education and Student Affairs program in the education department. The class in question is dedicated to “exploring issues of diversity and inequality as well as their personal and social responsibility for building a more just university and society.” A look at the class’s syllabus reveals that much of it is simply a catalog of alleged oppression in American society. Different class days focused on topics like white privilege and racism, and the syllabus is replete with reading assignments like “Dragon ladies, snow queens, and Asian-American dykes: Reflections on race and sexuality.” In fact, just two weeks before Artan’s rampage, the class focused on the topic of religious oppression, with a particular focus on the alleged oppression of Muslims. Readings for the November 16 class included “Creating identity-safe spaces on college campuses for Muslim students,” while the Nov. 17 discussion on “Unpacking Religious Oppression” included the reading “Christian privilege: Breaking a sacred taboo.”)

FOX NEWS OPINION
— Liberals get hysterical over the ‘alt-right’ but we are living in their ‘alt-left’ world – Dan Gainor (DIERSEN: Ever-increasing, the “traditional media” acts as an arm of the Democrat Party.”)
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2016/12/02/liberals-get-hysterical-over-alt-right-but-are-living-in-their-alt-left-world.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The traditional media are obsessed with tying conservatives to the “alt-right.” There have been more than 50 major news network mentions this year alone as journalists try to do what they always do — paint conservatives as racist, sexist, and a few other words that end in ist. All in the name of “tolerance.”  But when it comes to the left, then they abandon that strategy. There is no alt-left. They are not alternative. Their mainstream is radical and out of the American mainstream on almost everything. This was quite obvious as liberals bemoaned the death of Fidel Castro, a man his own daughter called “a tyrant.” The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. summed up years of devotion, recalling how, “the oppressed the world over joined Castro’s cause of fighting for freedom & liberation.” Some liberals distanced themselves from that love affair, though many have embraced left-wing dictators from Stalin to Chavez. But, the left is even worse when it comes to policy, where it shows its true colors (red). On every major issue of the day, the left is unified. Taxes. Climate. So-called “free” college. Citizens United. Transgender bathroom/locker rooms/showers. ObamaCare. In each case and thousands more, the left wants more, bigger, better-funded government. Liberals want higher taxes because they know how to spend your money better than you do — on what they want. They have turned climate science into a religion where disbelief is to be persecuted or even prosecuted.)

Further, non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, a) the longer that you are a federal employee, the less likely that private sector employers will hire you, b) your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 ($92,632) by age 25, GS-14 ($109,463) by age 30, GS-15 ($128,759) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service ($160,300) by age 40, c) you will be expected to help your superiors and supervisors get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran, and d) virtually everyone despises if not hates federal employees, former federal employees, and federal retirees.)
http://www.leadershipinstitute.org/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now is the time for patriotic Americans to come to the aid of their country.  Will you be one of them? On November 8th Americans voted and then held their breath.  Nothing less than the continuation of the United States as a constitutional republic hung in the balance.  After the polls closed, there emerged a result that would confound the ideologues and reassure nervous patriotic Americans:  Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. Overcoming the obstacles left by decades of disinformation from the dominant leftist news media, false indoctrination in our schools and colleges, corrosive popular entertainment, and the hidden but almost certainly widespread election fraud perpetrated by the radical left, Americans voted decisively to stop the deconstruction of the Constitution and the rule of law. But this will be a fleeting victory if qualified conservatives fail to step up and seek appointments in the Trump Administration.  Donald Trump now needs the help of conservative Americans like you.  President-elect Trump needs reinforcements from capable, principled, courageous conservatives to help him make America great again. Service in the Executive Branch of the United States Government is an honorable undertaking.  Now it is especially heroic for a principled conservative.  And the salary and benefits are substantial. More than 2 million civilians work for the Executive Branch of the United States (not including employees of the U.S. Postal Service).  This is a permanent workforce, insulated by the civil service law from the ordinary forms of discipline and accountability that promote productive achievements in the private sector. To help him manage this massive Executive Branch workforce (they are supposed to help him “take care that the laws be faithfully executed”) President-elect Trump will appoint about 4,000 civil officers and lower officials who will serve at his pleasure.  You can see that the conservative principles of leadership, competence, courage, and initiative of these 4,000 appointees will be crucial to the rehabilitation of the rule of law in the United States Government. Will you answer the call of duty and apply to serve in the Trump Administration?  Will you encourage other capable, brave, conservative Americans to seek to serve in the Trump Administration? In late 1980 and early 1981, I worked full-time in the Presidential Personnel Office of President-elect Ronald Reagan.  Then I worked for three years on President Reagan’s White House Staff. Those of us in the Reagan White House saw that where the right people are given responsibility, good things tend to happen.  A principled appointee will look for ways to implement his principles.  Those without principles will tend to do nothing unless they are told to do it.  A too centralized organization cannot achieve as much as an intelligently de-centralized one. Personnel is policy. Every Presidential political appointee has some power to make things happen.  Will you be one of them? President-elect Trump will successfully restore constitutional government if conservatives with competence, experience, and courage step up and seek appointments in the Trump Administration.  Do you have what it takes to serve the President-elect and your country well?  Will you seek an appointment? The stakes are high; if we are to keep our republic, now is the time to demonstrate the full power of conservative principles.  Are you ready for the challenge? What should you do now? Review the compilation in the Plum Book of the approximately 4,000 political positions that will be filled in the Trump Administration:  https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/GPO-PLUMBOOK-2012/pdf/GPO-PLUMBOOK-2012.pdf  After you have a good idea of the departments and job positions that fit your experience and qualifications, submit an online application through the official Presidential Transition portal at https://www.greatagain.gov/serve-america.html.  Record any reference number that the system assigns to you. Then fill out the Leadership Institute Presidential Personnel Referral Form – recommend yourself and other good conservatives who should step forward to help the President-elect succeed in restoring America to her founding principles.  This is the starting point for LI to guide you through the appointment process.  Find the form here:  https://www.conservativejobs.com/PresidentialReferral/index.cfm  My staff can provide advice on your resume, cover letter, and the Executive Branch positions that your experience is best suited for.  Email resumes@LeadershipInstitute.org to schedule a resume consultation (these can be by phone). You should also visit the portal set up by our friends at the Heritage Foundation so they can help you too:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc52DDZ5hEd7SmQMOInYXAxtqu8NKKbAMye16P6T04I-uDY-w/viewform. Now is the time for all good conservatives to come to the aid of their country.)

— Homeowners Hit the Jackpot  Homeowners who stay put—living in the same home for 15, 20, 30 years—can pocket millions of dollars when they finally make a move. – STEFANOS CHEN (DIERSEN: My grandfather on my father’s side had 1286 Wood Street built in Crete in 1926 on land that his grandfather bought in 1864. My brother continues to live there. Zillow estimates it to be worth $122,268.)
http://www.wsj.com/articles/homeowners-hit-the-jackpot-1480605189
(FROM THE THE ARTICLE: Wait long enough, though, and the peaks and valleys seem less important. In San Francisco, Ed McGuirk, 65, and his family are selling an eight-bedroom Victorian home for $6.95 million; his grandfather bought it for $30,000 in 1926. “That was a ton of money back then,” said Mr. McGuirk, a retired schoolteacher. “But now it’s skyrocketed in price.” He, along with his siblings and a cousin, are selling the roughly 5,100-square-foot home because they all live elsewhere; his aunt, the last owner, died in 2015. Unlike most homes in the area, the Queen Anne-style home still has most of its original layout, with 12-foot ceilings and grand parlors. In the basement, his grandfather’s Prohibition-era bar is still intact. Behind a mirror is a passageway that led into the front yard—presumably to make a quick escape from police, he said. He used to play in the tunnel as a child. (It has since been sealed to elude more likely raiders—neighborhood raccoons. The home was listed in September for just under $7.5 million and reduced to $6.95 million in October.)

An ongoing effort, it will track the discriminatory and hateful statements and stances of President-elect Donald Trump and others selected, or being considered for, roles in his administration. Though GLAAD is an LGBTQ media advocacy organization, it will catalog not only anti-LGBTQ remarks, but also comments targeting women, immigrants, Muslims and other communities and ideas. “I think we’re in a different place. We have an LGBTQ community, among other communities, that feel that we are living in a new America,” Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of GLAAD, tells Newsweek. “We have had quite a bit of progress over the past years, and there are concerns that some of the progress is going to be rolled back.” The project is “an opportunity to shine a light on what is being said and how it could affect the progress that we’ve made.”)

http://dailycaller.com/2016/11/30/immigration-is-about-economics-not-a-wall/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to new research from Pew Research, there are eight million illegal immigrants working or looking for work in the U.S., totaling five percent of the U.S. work force and the vast majority of the over 11 million illegal immigrants commonly estimated to be in the nation. While many of those immigrants pay taxes, there is a net cost to taxpayers of tens of billions of dollars per year, according to fluctuating estimates. Many of these costs are borne by state and local governments. Building an expensive wall won’t force any illegal immigrants, about 40 percent of whom have overstayed their visas after legally crossing our borders, to leave the country. Enacting an effective E-Verify program enforced by fining businesses who hire illegal immigrants would, by removing the financial incentive of employment. Likewise, Congress and Trump can simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars and remove at least some of the financial and legal protections provided to illegal immigrants by pulling funding from more than 200 sanctuary cities that refuse to work with federal customs officials.)

http://www.decaturdaily.com/opinion/columnists/popularity-contest-with-trump/article_e8fd4557-c5a4-5aa4-a9a0-95edb4d440e5.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Journalists need to recognize we’re not going to win a popularity contest with Trump, and we shouldn’t try. Trump is not going to be appeased by friendlier coverage. He campaigned against the media, and he will continue to use the media as a foil. His party controls Congress, and conservatives will soon control the Supreme Court. If he can discredit the media, he’ll remove another check to his power. Our third president, Thomas Jefferson, famously remarked that “were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” Our 45th president would clearly prefer the former. He has shut out news organizations, including The Post, whose coverage he dislikes. He has threatened to restrict First Amendment press freedoms. Pursuing public affection is a fool’s errand. The profession was never held in high public esteem. And the recent decline in approval is due entirely to Trump’s bashing.)
