— Duckworth Slams Trump as ‘5-Deferment Draft Dodger’ in Fiery Speech on Shutdown The Illinois Democrat said Trump’s accusation was “just the latest in a string of recent comments where he accuses Democrats like me of not caring about our military” – Shelby Bremer (DIERSEN: Like Trump, I am a “5-Deferment Draft Dodger.” Should draft dodgers like Trump and I be barred from seeking/holding government/political offices? To be considered a draft dodger today, you have to be someone a) who was subject to the draft, b) sought or obtained one or more draft deferment, c) fled the United States, d) etc.  If you sought or obtained a draft deferment, by definition, you are, like Trump and me, a) a citizen of the United States, b) male, and c) old. In 2006, in Wheaton, Duckworth had one of her thugs throw me out of one of her public events.)

— Is a Medicaid work requirement fair? – Editorial
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-edit-medicaid-rauner-work-trump-20180116-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this month, Kentucky made Medicaid history: It will now require some of its Medicaid recipients to work or risk losing benefits. Critics say this 20-hours-per-week rule is a draconian plan to toss people off the rolls. Let’s talk about that. Kentucky’s plan is flexible: Recipients could meet the requirement through volunteer work, job training, searching for a job, taking classes, or caring for someone elderly or disabled. Pregnant women, full-time students, the medically frail, the homeless and people who aren’t healthy enough to work will be exempt. . .Illinois, like almost every state, struggles to control rising Medicaid costs. You’ll remember that Obamacare not only offered a way for the uninsured to buy coverage, but also hugely expanded Medicaid beyond its traditional role of helping the neediest Americans afford health care. Illinois added hundreds of thousands of people to the rolls, many of them able-bodied adults — and Washington, not Illinois taxpayers — paid almost all of the new costs. As a result, 1 in 4 Illinoisans now is a Medicaid beneficiary.)

— Rauner’s new take on federal tax overhaul – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-chicago-riverwalk-noise-proposal-20180122-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this year, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner appeared on a Joliet radio station and said the GOP-led tax overhaul in Washington was “punishing” to the middle class for capping the deduction of state and local taxes at $10,000. But late last week, the governor unveiled a new “point of view” blog on the state website. He lauded the new federal tax law and said it means “tax relief is coming for the vast majority of Illinois families and businesses starting in 2018.” It’s the latest of shifting positions Rauner has had on Republican efforts in Washington. The governor previously declined to discuss his thoughts on changes to the tax code, saying he had “no obligation to comment on every possible policy change in Washington.” In his new blog post, Rauner said: “Members of Illinois’ middle class will keep more of their hard-earned dollars as a result of the federal tax changes.” Rauner said seven out of 10 federal tax returns in Illinois do not itemize deductions and will be able to take advantage of a doubled standard deduction and lower tax rates. He said “most families who itemize their returns will also see lower taxes,” even with the cap on state and local tax deductions and a $750,000 limit on mortgage interest for new home sales. If anything, Rauner said he sees the new federal tax law as sending “a clear message to the Illinois General Assembly: Get busy reducing state and local taxes.” Rauner has long been rebuffed in calling for freezing and making it easier for citizens to reduce local property taxes. And he’s also called for a rollback of the state income tax hike enacted last year.)

From what I see, ever-increasingly, tragically, people want to live in neighborhoods where the following are the majority: anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)

In 1987, my Democrat GAO superiors got rid of my mentor who had hired me in 1980, got me assigned to audits of IRS in 1986, and promoted me in 1986.)

— Do millennials really have it tough? – Gene Marks (DIERSEN: Did you have it tough? Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that if I was a millennial, I never would have been able to do what I did before I was 33. I bought new cars when I was 17, 19, 20, 23, and 29. I bought a new town home when I was 24, a studio condo when I was 25, and 27. My wife and I bought a home when I was 29. I earned a bachelor’s degree when I was 21, an MBA when I was 27, and a master’s degree in accounting when I was 31. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt when I was 30. I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt when I was 32. In today’s dollars, I was earning $81,071/year when I was 25 and $91,880/year when I was 30.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/inc/tca-do-millennials-really-have-it-tough-20180116-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hobbes cited the spiraling costs of health care, housing and education that affect his generation. He drew attention to stagnating wages, the rise of lower-quality contracting work that has replaced jobs with real benefits, the expensive real estate and cost of living required to live in the highest growth cities like San Francisco, Seattle and New York, and the right-leaning attitude toward more personal responsibility that has shifted significantly over the past two decades. In addition, Motley Fool points out that millennials are delaying life events such as marriage and home ownership because of money uncertainty. When adjusting for inflation, the average worker in the 24-36 age group earns $10,000 less than their parents’ generation did at the same age, which is roughly 20 percent less purchasing power. Many younger workers (66 percent) are contributing to an employer-sponsored retirement plan, but at lower rates than older generations, and that’s largely because of limited earnings and student debt, Motley Fool reports. The average student debt for a millennial is double that of the previous generation, Motley Fool notes. And, according to a T. Rowe Price study, nearly half of millennials expect to work at least part-time in retirement.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— New session will bring new efforts at pension reform – Doug Finke (DIERSEN: To “reform” pensions is to a) make employees pay more for their pensions and/or b) cut employee pensions. Ever-increasingly, you are demonized, denigrated, and condemned a) if you are in line to get a pension or b) if you are getting a pension. The bigger the pension that you are in line to get or you are getting, the more that you are demonized, denigrated, and condemned as being someone who is getting something that they did not really earn and that they do not disserve. How do people react when they are demonized, denigrated, and condemned?)

http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20180121/their-view-is-civics-still-taught-in-our-schools
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: During the last national election we experienced a level of civics illiteracy — locally and nationally, across the age spectrum — that was both astounding and appalling. So glaring was it — about the most basic elements of government, from its three branches to the separation of powers to the Bill of Rights — that we wondered if civics is even being taught anymore in America’s schools. If so, those lessons were lost in Louisiana.)

Of all those immigration reforms, the loss of Chain Migration and the Visa Lottery would do the most damage to the Democrat voter import machine. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook is rolling out a major change to its News Feed: pushing up news articles that come from “high quality” sources, and pushing down the others. The move signals that, in an effort to combat the problem of fake news, the social media giant is willing to play a kind of editorial role — making decisions based on substance, not just how viral a headline may be. . .The company asserts that its own executives will not pick and choose favorites. Rather, they’ll let the users decide what counts as a trusted source.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD: HARDCOPY ARTICLE TITLE: Tax Confusion As New York Rethinks Code – Vivian Wang and Jesse McKinley (DIERSEN: One could ask what is Illinois doing to “sidestep the effects of President Trump’s new federal tax plan and its sharp reduction in the deductibility of state and local taxes?” In Washington, your Congressman represents you. Roskam represents me. In Springfield, who represents those in your county, in your township/ward, and in your municipality who pay more than $10,000 a year in real estate and state income taxes? For me, it is Bruce Rauner, Evelyn Sanguinetti, Mike Connelly, and Jeanne Ives. In addition to the aforesaid, Morthland, Harold, Grasso, Minor, Grant, and Byrne want to represent me in Springfield.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/18/nyregion/cuomo-trump-payroll-tax-income.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If taxpayers and lawmakers were expecting that a new 37-page report would provide a definitive road map of how New York State might sidestep the effects of President Trump’s new federal tax plan and its sharp reduction in the deductibility of state and local taxes, they instead got a view of just how complicated this is. The report, released this week, laid out at least a half-dozen ways New York could rewrite its tax code, with no indication of which option legislators might pursue. There was a potpourri of progressive rates, wage credits and tax-withholding schemes, with officials cautioning that all the options would require further study. No bills have been drafted. The possibilities included completely replacing the state income tax with an employer-side payroll tax; introducing a new progressive payroll tax in addition to the existing income tax, with tax credits to make up the difference; or designing a payroll tax only for wage earners above a certain income threshold — the taxpayers most likely to be hurt by the federal tax plan in the first place. Some versions would be mandatory. Others would be opt-in.)

An Unwelcome Tax Surprise Could Soon Lurk in Your Paycheck
— Workers’ withholding may no longer reflect what is owed for the current year or anticipated refunds – Laura Saunders (DIERSEN: From what I see, outrageously, the less federal income tax that you have paid in the past because you have itemized your deductions, the more federal income tax that you will pay in the future. I itemized my deductions 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions since we got married in 1978.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/an-unwelcome-tax-surprise-could-soon-lurk-in-your-paycheck-1516363200
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to Treasury officials, the new withholding tables have been adjusted to reflect the larger standard deduction, lower tax rates, and the repeal of the personal exemption. But the tables couldn’t take into account changes that affect individuals differently. So they don’t include the shrinking alternative-minimum tax, the expanded child credit, or the repeal of deductions for state and local taxes. . .Or, say that Mike owes high federal and state taxes that he will no longer be able to deduct, other than $10,000. But his W-4 form on file with his employer reflects his ability to take these deductions in prior years. As a result, Mike might be under-withheld for tax year 2018. . .Many agree that taxpayers at high risk of being under-withheld are those with large itemized deductions that have been repealed or limited. These include write-offs for state and local taxes and miscellaneous expenses, such as those not reimbursed by an employer.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Straub, who is challenging Durkin from the right, seems to have a bit of an issue with his Republican creds, or at least with his voting creds. Voting records show Straub hasn’t voted in a Republican primary since 2010. He pulled a Republican ballot in the 2010 primary as well as in 2008, 2004 and 1998. Probably a good thing he’s running for state rep and not trying to serve as a Republican committeeman, since that requires voting in the last three primary elections. THE HILL
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps say “If Congress cares about protecting our investments, they should pass a Dream Act.” In 1997, Congress certainly did not care about protecting what GAO had invested in me or what I had invested in myself. In 1997, when I was 49 years old, when GAO succeeded in forcing me to take its early retirement “offer,” it threw away the almost 18 years of experience that I had gained working for GAO, the last 8 years of which I had spent working on audits of financial industry regulators, and the last 11 years of which I worked at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325. GAO threw away everything that I had learned earning a job-related master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997. GAO threw away everything that I had learned becoming a Forensic Accountant in 1997, a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Internal Auditor in 1981, and a CPA in 1979. GAO threw away everything that I had learned earning a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970. GAO threw away everything that I had learned working on audits of IRS for 3 years and working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With Democrats surging, talk of insurgency in Republican primaries has faded — especially after Roy Moore’s defeat in Alabama. People feel less inclined to stoke internal fights when the general election is in doubt. There are exceptions, where the incumbent Republican is likely to win — or to lose. An example of the latter is in Illinois, where Governor Bruce Rauner buckled on taxes and abortion. He faces a primary challenge from a solid — but long-shot — candidate, State Senator Jeanne Ives. Regardless, Republicans are in trouble. The party’s message for 2018 will be less about the achievements of the past two years, and more about preventing Trump’s impeachment and keeping the Speaker’s gavel out of Nancy Pelosi’s hands.)

NPR ILLINOIS
— A Call For Transparency – CHARLES N. WHEELER III
http://nprillinois.org/post/call-transparency#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The intent of disclosure, of course, is to alert voters to economic interests that could pose a conflict as a public official carries out his or her duties. But identifying such conflicts “is a huge gray area” under the current rules, says Sarah Brune, the campaign’s executive director, because the filings are so vague. What’s needed, she says, is more detailed disclosure, so that the media and the public understands what someone’s interests are. Specific changes the campaign is proposing include requiring filers to disclose the names of businesses and investments with ties to the individual, along with the degree of ownership and the actual income received. Also, professionals should be required to provide the names of individual clients from whom they’ve received more than $5,000, unless barred by confidentiality rules, rather than simply the types of services provided and the nature of the businesses served. As a hypothetical, Brune notes a candidate now can report simply getting more than $5,000 for professional services on behalf of an energy company, when in fact the individual might have been paid $500,000 by Exelon.)

GOVERNING
— The 6 Most Dysfunctional States Then and Now In 2009, Louis Jacobson ranked the states with the worst leadership and policy challenges. Almost a decade later, what’s changed? – LOUIS JACOBSON
http://www.governing.com/topics/politics/gov-six-most-dysfunctional-states.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The only state from the 2009 list that has remained in serious trouble is Illinois. Gov. Bruce Rauner hasn’t committed any serious ethics violations. Rather, the problem has been relentless gridlock between Rauner, a Republican, and the Democratic-controlled legislature. In fact, Illinois’ situation may actually have worsened in some ways since 2009. The state went without a full budget for more than two years, and it remains in fiscal trouble, with over $15 billion in unpaid bills and a massive unfunded pension liability. “This has made everything significantly worse — fiscal, social, economic and civic trust, [as well as] confidence and engagement,” says Kent Redfield, an emeritus professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield. All of this has all occurred at a time when Illinois’ policy challenges have grown, Redfield adds. These include “a weak, narrow revenue structure and insufficient tax rates, overspending and lack of priorities, a negative business climate, declining population, fiscal stresses for higher education, an aging state workforce, deteriorating infrastructure, state and local pension debt, and ineffective public service delivery at the state and local level,” he says. The one silver lining for Illinois is that the two sides did manage to enact a compromise budget last year — a significant, if belated, step forward. Still, Illinois would be a clear candidate for a new list of the nation’s most dysfunctional states. What other states might contend for this dubious honor?)

ROLL CALL
— Illinois House Primaries Will Be Early Testing Ground for Democrats  Democrats have several pickup opportunities, but they need viable candidates first – Simone Pathé
https://www.rollcall.com/news/politics/illinois-house-primaries-democrats
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Based on 2016 presidential performance, the 6th District looks like Democrats’ best pickup opportunity. Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race Likely Republican. “It’s one of those districts where we have to perform; it’s a part of our path,” a national Democratic strategist said. Out of the four Illinois seats on the DCCC’s target list, it’s the only one Clinton carried — by 7 points. But voters in this affluent suburban Chicago district also backed incumbent Republican Sen. Mark S. Kirk, who lost statewide, and easily gave Rep. Peter Roskam a sixth term. Democrats plan to hit Roskam on the GOP tax overhaul, which the state’s Republican governor called “punishing” because of its cap on state and local tax deductions. “It’s clear that [Roskam’s] voters wanted a conservative representative who was focused on cutting their taxes — and that’s exactly what Roskam did,” Maddie Anderson, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in an email. “I’m a little confused by the notion that following through on what voters asked for would lead to being voted out of office,” she added. Seven Democrats have filed the requisite signatures to run in the primary, including 2016 nominee Amanda Howland, who lost to Roskam by 18 points. But the DCCC is not in a position to back any of the other candidates because members of the Illinois delegation are split. Many national Democrats see Kelly Mazeski, a former financial adviser and local elected official, as the front-runner. The breast cancer survivor announced her candidacy the day the House voted to repeal the 2010 health care law, which earned her national attention. She raised $163,000 in the fourth quarter of 2017 and loaned herself another $100,000. She ended December with $510,000 in the bank. In addition to support from EMILY’s List, she has endorsements from Illinois Reps. Jan Schakowsky and Cheri Bustos and several of Bustos’ closest female allies in Congress, who have been politically active across the country. But some members of the delegation prefer lawyer Carole Cheney, a former district chief of staff to Rep. Bill Foster. She has the backing of Foster and Rep. Robin Kelly. She had $90,000 at the end of the third quarter.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2018/01/16/trumps-disruption-of-government-could-aid-top-federal-employees-survey-says/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With President Trump’s first presidential anniversary days away, hundreds of political positions in the federal government still lack nominees. Perhaps some folks don’t want to work for a white supremacist, but that’s another column. While the lack of political appointees can cause myriad problems, there also can be an upside for career staffers — like the opportunity for them to disrupt, which is not the same as resist. In fact, Trump campaigned and has governed with disruption of the established order as a primary goal. A new survey on “Navigating Disruption” sought to determine if government leaders “are being inducted into a new phase of government service, with disruption as its key operating principle.” Think of disruption as bold action upsetting the status quo. That can be good or bad. The survey, conducted by the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) and the Grant Thornton accounting firm, focused on federal chief financial officers (CFOs), but the findings also are relevant to other career government leaders.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now high-income folks who pay the bills for big government in California, Illinois and New York will be even more motivated to decamp for Nevada, Florida or Texas. If they leave, a dwindling group of productive workers will be left to shoulder a rising financial burden. . .Illinois is $361 billion in the hole on state pensions. (That figure doesn’t include Chicago’s $90 billion shortfall.) If Illinois asked workers in the private sector and the federal government to make up the state’s deficit, each maker would have to chip in $68,000. NBC5
— Chris Kennedy Walks Off Stage During Gun Violence Comment at Forum “It hit a very special nerve for me,” Kennedy said in an interview with NBC5 – Mary Ann Ahern and Brendan Pedersen (DIERSEN: Republicans promote the traditional family. Democrats promote things that destroy the traditional family. Children raised in traditional families are far less likely to commit crime and they are far more likely to be successful in life.)
https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/chris-kennedy-leaves-stage-during-forum-469429893.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy left the stage during a forum on Monday after Republican State Rep. Jeanne Ives argued the solution to the state’s gun violence was having “more fathers in the home.” Kennedy, a Democrat, replied by pointing out he had grown up without a father before standing up and walking out of the venue. For the Winnetka businessman and politician, gun violence is personal. Both his father and uncle – Sen. Robert Kennedy (D) and President John F. Kennedy (D), respectively – were shot and killed during the turbulent 1960s. Kennedy has made gun violence a top priority of his campaign since he declared his candidacy last February, earning endorsements from African-American Congressmen Bobby Rush and Danny Davis in the process. “It hit a very special nerve for me,” Kennedy said in an interview with NBC 5. “I lost my father to someone with a gun. For someone to say simply the solution is to have a father-in-law – I don’t know. How shall I react? What should my family have done?” Kathleen Murphy, a spokesperson for Ives, said in a statement Monday night that the representative did not mean to offend Mr. Kennedy during the forum. However, Murphy also reiterated the importance of fathers in domestic life, citing “similar statements” like President Barack Obama’s 2008 Father’s Day speech at the Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s South Side. In his speech, the then-candidate said, “too many fathers also are is missing — missing from too many lives and too many homes.” “Those are President Obama’s words, and that was what she was echoing today,” Murphy said. “She certainly meant no offense to Mr. Kennedy.” Kennedy made the decision to leave after watching the 2016 Republican primary debates, where he said, “the Republican Party allowed Donald Trump to say racist and simplistic things.” Kennedy argued that Republicans should have vacated the stage in protest like he did when he heard “simplistic solutions to tragic problems.” Kennedy’s running mate, Ra Joy, has also been personally stricken by gun violence. His son Xavier was killed by gunfire in Hyde Park last June. After returning home from college for the summer, his family believes he was killed for his cell phone just two blocks from his home. Kennedy quoted his running mate when it came to tackling violence. “As Ra points out, hurt people hurt people,” he said. “We need to be sensitive to that; think in terms of empathy and not in terms of punishment, and that’s not what I was hearing today.”)

The proposal from Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, comes as elected officials and prominent figures nationwide face heightened scrutiny amid a flood of sexual misconduct allegations. In Illinois, state Sen. Ira Silverstein, D-Chicago, has been accused of sexually harassing a victims rights advocate while working with the woman to pass legislation. Silverstein denied the allegations, which brought to light flaws in the way ethics complaints are handled at the Capitol as the office charged with investigating allegations sat empty for three years. The measure pushed by McSweeney would require local government agencies, including schools and community colleges, to disclose within three days details of severance agreements whenever any workers are fired over alleged sexual harassment or discrimination. A related proposal he also introduced late last week would prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to pay off legal settlements resulting from a state lawmaker’s sexual misconduct.)

Trump’s critics reject the immigration planks in the Republican Party platform and in the Illinois Republican Party platform. What does Roskam say to those like me who support the immigration planks in the Republican Party platform and in the Illinois Republican Party platform? IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. My Democrat GAO superiors were furious when I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981 when I was 32 years old. WIRE POINTS
— Chris Kennedy’s appalling response to Jeanne Ives – Mark Glennon (DIERSEN: Republicans promote the traditional family. Democrats promote things that destroy the traditional family. Children raised in traditional families are far less likely to commit crime and they are far more likely to be successful in life.)
http://www.wirepoints.com/chris-kennedys-appalling-response-to-jeanne-ives-quicktake/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “We know the statistics — that children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of schools and 20 times more likely to end up in prison.” That was Senator Barack Obama in 2008. “You know how you’re going to solve [gun violence]? Fathers in the home.” That was Jeanne Ives, candidate for governor, at a forum today. This time, the audience booed and shouted. Chris Kennedy walked off the stage and said, “When I hear such ignorance and stupidity aired out by someone who knows so little about so much, I don’t think there’s an appropriate place for them to be on a podium on a dais.” Mayor Emanuel last year proudly attributed a historic low in teen births to the City’s work and to Obamacare. The federal government, under Obama and long before, linked unwed births to crime. Ives made her comment to a crowd she knew would be hostile — mostly Democratic on the west side of Chicago. Over the booing she repeated what she believes, “Fathers in the home.” Seeing that, instead of joining the jeering hypocrisy, maybe Kennedy should have remembered something his father said: “Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change.”)

Hallow (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, to advance young Democrat minorities and to advance young Democrat females, Democrats oppose anything that is merit based. Democrats use Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to get rid of Republicans. My Democrat IRS superiors were furious when I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 when I was 30 years old. My Democrat GAO superiors were furious when I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981 when I was 32 years old. The young Democrat minorities and the young Democrat females who my Democrat IRS and GAO superiors promoted over me had not taken those examinations, let alone passed them.)
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jan/16/donald-trumps-point-is-well-taken-the-rest-is-durb/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most people aren’t race-baiters, haters or supremacists, including those nodding their heads in agreement with what President Trump said in a private meeting to Democratic and Republican lawmakers. Most people simply think it’s neither the mission nor the obligation of the United States to educate people who can’t get anything that even passes for education in their countries of origin — or get even basic health care, sanitation and job opportunities. Most people think it’s in America’s and Americans’ interest to emphasize merit over need in deciding whom to admit to our shores for possible citizenship. Emphasize merit but not exclusively. Mr. Trump, for all his controversial word choice and political incorrectness, has forced that discussion into the public square — and other heretofore verboten subjects. Maybe in time to save the republic from the elites who are killing it, maybe not.)

SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE
— Libel laws: What are they and why is Trump talking about them, again? – Luis Gomez (DIERSEN: According to this article, “Publicly elected officials have a higher bar to meet because, unlike private citizens, statements made about them are probably a matter of public importance. Public officials like Trump, still, have recourse when they can prove “actual malice” or that the falsehoods made were done recklessly or maliciously.” My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes routinely slander and libel me because they believe that they can get away with it because I have to meet a “higher bar” to prove slander and libel a) because I have been the GOPUSA Editor since 2000 and b) because I have been an elected Republican Precinct Committeeman since 2000. Further, they know that because of my demographics, I have terrible “jury appeal.” Ever-increasingly, juries are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/the-conversation/sd-what-are-libel-laws-and-why-trump-talking-about-them-20180110-htmlstory.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So, what are libel laws? Here’s how the American Lawyer Media defines libel: “to publish in print (including pictures), writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation, by tending to bring the target into ridicule, hatred, scorn or contempt of others.” Libel is one form of defamation that is distinguished by how it is done, through the broadcast or dissemination of a printed material, like a book. Slander is another form of defamation but one that is done orally like spoken in a public meeting. Can Trump sue for defamation and win? To win a defamation suit, according to one law firm, one must prove A) that the statement made was false, B) that it caused “material harm” and C) that those who made the statement acted with malice or with negligence. Publicly elected officials have a higher bar to meet because, unlike private citizens, statements made about them are probably a matter of public importance. Public officials like Trump, still, have recourse when they can prove “actual malice” or that the falsehoods made were done recklessly or maliciously.)

— How to Boost Your Retirement Savings in 2018 – Anne Tergesen (DIERSEN: Because of my Democrat GAO superiors, I have been a nonworking spouse since 1997. Because my outstanding wife works, we have put the maximum in spousal IRAs since 1997.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/four-hacks-to-boost-your-retirement-savings-in-2018-1515753001
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Save for a nonworking spouse To contribute to an individual retirement account, you have to earn income. But there is an exception for nonworking spouses: a so-called spousal IRA. Provided one spouse has wages, self-employment earnings or other forms of income, he or she can set up a spousal IRA and contribute up to $5,500 a year on behalf of a spouse. (IRA owners 50 or older can make $1,000 of additional “catch-up” contributions, for a total of $6,500 a year.) A couple must file a joint tax return to qualify. The nonworking spouse can stash money in a traditional IRA or, if the couple meets income requirements, in a Roth IRA. With a traditional IRA, employees generally get to subtract the contributions from their income and reduce the taxes they pay, but they must pay ordinary income tax on the money when they withdraw it. With a Roth IRA, there is no upfront tax deduction but the money grows tax-free. A nonworking spouse in a couple that earns less than $199,000 can opt for a Roth IRA; above that, he or she is restricted to a traditional IRA. With a traditional IRA, the nonworking spouse must be younger than age 70½ years when the contributions are made. Also, if the working spouse is covered by a 401(k)-type plan, both spouses can still contribute to an IRA. But the working spouse can’t take a tax deduction for contributions to a traditional IRA if his or her income is above $121,000. The nonworking spouse loses the deduction when household income is above $199,000. Those with incomes above those thresholds can contribute after-tax money, and when they tap the account in retirement they will be liable for income tax only on the earnings.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/western-springs/news/ct-dbr-straub-durkin-campaign-tl-0111-20180109-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Burr Ridge Village Board members are threatening to sue state Rep. Jim Durkin of Western Springs for allegedly slandering the village with his political advertisements. Durkin, the Illinois House Republican leader, is running for re-election in the 8th House District and Burr Ridge Mayor Mickey Straub, also a Republican, has filed to run against him in the primary. The district includes all or portions of Burr Ridge, La Grange and Western Springs. Board member Albert Paveza said a group called Citizens for Durkin has been mailing out numerous fliers alleging the village has run unbalanced budges while driving up property taxes. The advertisements also allege the village raised fees to pay for a Chicago bailout. Paveza said he consulted with the village’s attorney, and the attorney agreed Durkin’s political ads may have crossed a line. Scott Uhler, the village’s attorney, confirmed that opinion. Paveza said he’s fielded numerous calls from constituents who have received the fliers and who were confused by the allegations. In response, Paveza drafted a letter to Durkin, Citizens for Durkin and the Illinois Republican Party demanding an apology and asking that the campaign cease “further distribution of false information.” Paveza said he expects an apology by or during the next board meeting on Jan. 22, saying if that doesn’t happen, legal action might. Durkin’s campaign did not return a call for comment on Monday. A spokesman for the Illinois Republican Party said they would comment after speaking to their attorney, who was not available Monday.)

— If Google’s workplace is biased, what about its algorithms? – Leonid Bershidsky (DIERSEN: Who blacklists who? Members of Group A blacklist members of Group B. Members of Group A are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors and members of Group B are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German Americans, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-google-bias-discrimination-algorithms-0110-20180109-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Culture of blacklisting The real complaint, of course, is about that. Google’s prevailing culture appears to be hostile to right-wing political views. As one manager wrote on an internal bulletin board (the screenshot is used in the lawsuit), “If you express a dunderheaded opinion about religion, about politics, or about ‘social justice,’ it turns out I am allowed to think you’re a halfwit” and refuse to work with such a person on a project. “As evidenced by the fact that the blacklisting posts remain live on Google’s internal corporate network, it is clear that Google took no action to prevent blacklisting,” Damore and Gudeman wrote in the lawsuit. “Google seems to ignore most cases, and occasionally ‘coach’ the worst offenders. However, Google will not openly come out against the practice; instead, it relies on crowdsourced harassment and ‘pecking’ to enforce social norms (including politics) that it feels it cannot write directly into its policies.” Gudeman claims his open support for Donald Trump directly contributed to his being blacklisted and fired. There’s a reason, however, that Damore and Gudeman need to bring race and gender into their accusations. Companies are not legally obliged to maintain a diversity of views among their employees. Opinions, unlike race, gender or sexual orientation, can be treated as a lifestyle choice, and these work better with some corporate cultures than with others. For example, Nike might prefer a workout fanatic to a smoker, while a tobacco company would be comfortable making the opposite choice. It can be argued that, because of the talent pool from which it draws — smart millennials who tend to value tolerance over the freedom of expression — Google builds a more cohesive working environment by hiring, to quote from the lawsuit, “an employee who sexually identifies as ‘a yellow-scaled wingless dragonkin’ and ‘an expansive ornate building’” than a #MAGA cap wearer. That, however, is exactly the problem. Google is not just a company, it’s the owner of the world’s biggest conduit to information, with a 69 percent global search market share. It leads people to it by using proprietary algorithms and artificial intelligence. And it’s acutely aware of the problem of algorithm bias. There’s a Google-produced video about it: “YouTube: Machine Learning and Human Bias.”)

To keep their jobs and to get promoted, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government focused on getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2018/01/10/retirement-crisis-37-gen-x-say-they-wont-able-afford-retire/1016739001/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Add Gen Xers to the long list of Americans who fear they won’t have a sizable enough nest egg to retire. Nearly four out of 10 (37%) of Generation X — those born between 1965 and the late 1970s — say they would like to stop working for good and “fully retire” someday, “but will not be able to afford to,” a new survey from TD Ameritrade, an online broker based in Omaha, found. Other gloomy Gen X retirement findings: 43% say “they are behind” in their savings. Half (49%) are “worried about running out of money” once they leave the workforce. Nearly two out of 10 (17%) say they “aren’t saving or investing for anything.” Only a third expect to be “very secure” in retirement — vs. nearly half of Baby Boomers. The savings shortfall has been exacerbated by the phasing out of traditional pensions funded by employers. In their place is the increasing reliance on 401(k) plans and IRAs that require workers to do most of the saving on their own.)

GAO
— Tackling the Tax Gap (DIERSEN: While my Democrat GAO superiors wasted my knowledge of IRS that I gaining by working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, they did let me work on audits of IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division for 3 years.)
https://blog.gao.gov/2018/01/09/tackling-the-tax-gap/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tax season is upon us, and many of us will soon be sitting down to figure out and pay our share. But this year, like every year, some taxpayers intentionally or inadvertently won’t fully pay what they owe. The difference between the amount that taxpayers owe and what they actually pay is known as the tax gap, and it’s hundreds of billions of dollars each year. Today’s WatchBlog discusses some of our recent reports on the tax gap, and what IRS might do to address it. How big is it? In 2016, the Internal Revenue Service estimated an average gap of $458 billion each year from 2008 to 2010. IRS expects eventually to collect part of this, but the rest—$406 billion per year for those years—will never be collected. That’s more than it costs to fund 10 of the largest federal agencies for a year. It’s more than 20 times what it costs to fund NASA for a year.)

MARKET WATCH
– New tax law is hitting these 4 states hard – ROBERT C. POZEN
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/new-tax-law-is-hitting-these-4-states-hard-2018-01-10
(FROM THE ARTICLE: These large increases in state revenues are not feasible, as illustrated by Illinois. To cope with its mammoth unfunded benefit obligations, Illinois has sharply raised tax rates on both individuals and businesses over the past few years. But higher tax rates in Illinois have backfired — driving local residents and firms to other states. In 2015, for example, Illinois lost $4.75 billion in adjusted gross income to other states, according to IRS data.)

MONEY MAGAZINE
— Jeff Bezos Is Now Worth More Than Bill Gates Ever Was – BLOOMBERG (DIERSEN: Are/were you rich? To demonize me, to denigrate me, and to condemn me as being “rich,” my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government stressed the money that I spent on new cars, real estate, tuition, collector cars, etc. and they stressed the money that I saved. Should it be illegal to say that someone is “rich” unless their annual income is more than $250,000, $500,000, $750,000, $1,000,000? Should it be illegal to say that someone is “rich” unless their net worth is more than $5,000,000, $10,000,000, $15,000,000, $20,000,000? My federal salary in today’s dollars was $16.33/hour when I was 18, $45,703/year when I was 22, $55,905/year when I was 23, $67,638/year when I was 24, $81,071/year when I was 25, $91,880/year when I was 31, $96,403/year when I was 38, and $125,325/year when I was 49. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://time.com/money/5094811/jeff-bezos-is-now-worth-more-than-bill-gates-ever-was/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Jeff Bezos’s net worth reached $105.1 billion Monday on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as Amazon.com Inc. shares added to a 12-month surge that’s lifted the online shopping giant’s market value by almost 57%. Amazon shares have risen 6.6% this year, with a report showing the Seattle-based company captured 89% of online spending among dominant holiday retailers in the five-week period beginning the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. The latest jump has pushed Bezos’s fortune definitively above the high reached by Microsoft Corp.’s Bill Gates in 1999. The Amazon founder passed Gates in October with a net worth of $93.8 billion and his fortune crossed $100 billion for the first time a month later when the holiday shopping season kicked off on Black Friday.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A trio of state lawmakers pushing to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Illinois suggested 2018 might not be the year to ask for a vote. State Sen. Heather Steans told the Chicago Tribune editorial board on Monday that supporters hope to unveil a new version of their legalization legislation by early February. The Chicago Democrat said backers will assess how much support they have among lawmakers, but she noted that legalizing marijuana might be a vote some want to avoid in an election year. “We really suspect that it’s not this session we’ll take a vote, we’re really just going to have a new bill that we think is closer,” Steans said. She made the pitch alongside Democratic Rep. Kelly Cassidy of Chicago and Republican Rep. Jason Barickman of Bloomington, saying the state should tax and regulate weed because many thousands of Illinoisans are already using it illegally.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whatever the number turns out to be, it’s the taxpayers, not the states where they live, who will pay. Taxpayers still will owe the same amount of money to state and local governments. But because of the limit on the SALT deduction, they will owe more money to the federal government. In other words, it’s a tax on the “millionaire and billionaires” so many populist politicians rail against. The greater their incomes, the more money the SALT-deduction limitation will cost them. Affected taxpayers have noted the new rules and acted accordingly. Many prepaid in 2017 the property taxes they would have paid in 2018 so they can get the full benefit of the SALT deduction before it’s limited. The savings could be significant. For a taxpayer in the 35 percent tax bracket, a fully deductible $20,000 local property-tax bill would generate $7,000 in federal tax savings. Now that higher-income taxpayer who pays $20,000 in property taxes and another $20,000 in state income taxes will see what would have been a $40,000 deduction, worth $14,000 in federal tax savings, limited to $10,000, worth $3,500 in federal tax savings. So why are the governors in high-tax states crying over the rich? Actually, they’re not. They’re crying for themselves because the new $10,000 SALT-deduction limitation will make it more difficult politically to raise taxes on upper-income families. Higher-income earners are already paying a disproportionate share of federal and state income taxes, and they won’t be happy if they’re asked to pay even more in state and local taxes on top of the higher federal taxes they’ll be required to pay.)

If my Democrat GAO superiors had not wasted my GAO career, had not wasted my knowledge of IRS, and had not forced me to take their early retirement offer in 1997 when I was 49 years old, I might still be working for GAO on audits of IRS.)
https://www.usnews.com/news/top-news/articles/2018-01-08/democrats-ask-watchdog-to-review-new-irs-tax-guidelines
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two U.S. Democratic politicians asked a government watchdog on Monday to scrutinize implementation of President Donald Trump’s tax law, warning that the administration could use new tax guidelines to create the appearance of a large middle-class tax cut ahead of the 2018 mid-term elections. In a letter to U.S. Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, Democratic Senator Ron Wyden and Representative Richard Neal said they were concerned that the U.S. Treasury could be pressured to adopt tax withholding tables that take too little federal tax out of employee paychecks to make good on White House predictions of a middle-class windfall. Such a move would inflate after-tax pay this year but leave workers to pay sizeable tax bills in 2019 when they file their 2018 federal tax returns, the lawmakers said. Wyden and Neal, the top Democrats on the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee and House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, asked that the watchdog Government Accountability Office review new Internal Revenue Service withholding tables to “assure Congress and the American public that there is no political influence.” Treasury, IRS and GAO officials had no immediate comment.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Investing in a Roth allows you to pay tax on the seed (the smaller, contribution amount) and reap the bounties of the harvest (the contributions plus earnings) tax free! Hoorays for the Roth IRA Earnings come out tax free as long as five years have passed since you opened your Roth IRA and you are 59½ or older. Contributions to a Roth IRA can be withdrawn anytime, for any reason, tax-free and penalty free. In contrast, all withdrawals from a traditional IRA are subject to income tax and generally subject to a 10% early withdrawal penalty if taken before age 59½. There is no age limit on making contributions to Roth IRA’s, while one can no longer contribute to a traditional IRA upon reaching the year in which one turns age 70½. You can contribute the maximum to a Roth employer plan and the maximum to a Roth IRA, as long as you are under the income limits in the chart below. You are not required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from a Roth IRA.
Contribution limits for 2018 are $5,500 ($6,500 age 50 or over), however there are income restrictions that may not permit you to contribute to a Roth IRA.)
