March 22 Morning Edition

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— MADIGAN, KELLY AND STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY – Lynn Sweet (DIERSEN: What congressional district do you live in? Who do you want to represent you on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC)? Who do you want to be the next IRP chairman? Who do you want to represent you on the 2020 IRP Platform & Resolutions Committee? What weighted vote will your next representative on the IRP SCC have, that is, what percent of the approximate 700,000 Republican primary ballots cast statewide were cast in your congressional district?)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/3-big-takeaways-from-the-illinois-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Robin Kelly won two victories in the primary from Democratic voters in the 2nd Congressional District. She was nominated for another term in Congress — that’s a clinch for November on this Democratic turf — and she won her race to become one of 38 members in charge of the Democratic Party of Illinois. They pick the chairman. The party chair is state House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has been slammed for his handling of sexual harassment allegations — serious hits in this “MeToo” era. GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner plans to continue to make Madigan a centerpiece of his re-election campaign. Madigan will be up for re-election as state party chair. With Kelly on the committee, there is, for the first time in ages, a viable alternative to Madigan.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Incumbent Roskam already calling for 6th Congressional district debates with Democratic challenger Sean Casten – Erin Hegarty (DIERSEN: Who badmouths you to Roskam? Who badmouthed you to Hyde? I should write a book about a) those who badmouth me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to Roskam, b) those who badmouthed me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to Hyde, and c) those who since 1989 have badmouthed me to both Roskam and Hyde.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-roskam-casten-6th-race-st-0323-20180322-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Roskam didn’t face a primary challenger, but suburban Democrats see November’s general election as a potential chance to take the seat in November because Democrat Hillary Clinton won the 6th District over Republican President Donald Trump by 7 percentage points in the 2016 election. Roskam prevailed in his race that year by more than 18 points. Roskam has faced tough campaigns before. He has held the 6th Congressional District seat since 2006, when he narrowly defeated Democrat Tammy Duckworth in a nationally watched race. The district’s boundaries have changed since then, and it now includes parts of Naperville, Elgin, Wheaton and portions of DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Cook counties.)
— Republicans blame Democrats for allowing Holocaust denier Art Jones with Nazi affiliations to get 20K GOP votes – Ted Slowik (DIERSEN: Why should anyone listen to the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) concerning Jones? Rauner rejects the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the IRP planform. Because the IRP promotes Rauner, the IRP rejects the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the IRP platform.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/daily-southtown/opinion/ct-sta-slowik-primary-election-recap-st-0322-20180321-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Maybe some of the 13,158 suburban Cook County residents who voted for Jones strongly believe in freedom of speech and Jones’ right to express his views. Perhaps some of the 3,023 voters in Chicago who punched his ticket agree with his positions on immigration (“no more sanctuary cities!”) or his support of 2nd Amendment rights (“concealed carry for personal protection!”). I suppose it’s possible some of the 4,093 people in Will County who cast ballots for Jones did so knowing about his anti-Semitic views but supported him anyway because of his stances against abortion and same-sex marriage. More likely, the 65 DuPage County residents who voted for Jones, 70, didn’t know about his former membership in the American Nazi Party or that he ran for mayor of Milwaukee as a member of the National Socialist White People’s Party in 1976. Jones, however, told me Wednesday he believes the votes for him were no accident. “The people who voted for me knew exactly who I was,” Jones said. “They liked what I had to say.” Jones said the Republican Party sent mailers and made robocalls telling people about his views, so voters must have known. “That might have gotten me a lot of votes,” he said of the party’s efforts. I think it’s more likely the vast majority of Jones voters simply supported whatever GOP candidate happened to be on the ballot. “Yes, I think your surmise is spot on,” said Sean Morrison of Orland Park, chair of the Cook County Republican Party, state committeeman for the 3rd District and Cook County Board member. “Look, the overwhelming majority of most folks in the district have absolutely no idea who the Nazi Art Jones is,” Morrison told me Wednesday. “I feel that they very likely pulled their Republican ballot and voted down the line.” Jones has previously run for the seat, but Republicans either successfully knocked him off the ballot by challenging his petitions or ran legitimate candidates whose totals dwarfed the few votes cast for Jones. This year was different. I asked Morrison why Republicans failed to field a “serious” candidate to challenge seven-term incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski, a conservative who narrowly withstood a primary challenge from progressive Marie Newman. “Well, it was certainly not for lack of trying to draw in candidates,” Morrison said. “The 3rd Congressional district has historically voted very high for Congressman Lipinski. Even many Republicans vote for him due to his strong family values positions, so he receives a great deal of crossover voters. “He typically wins his general races in 70 percent to 30 percent margins. Most prospects see the seemingly futile attempt in running against him.” In other words, the problem isn’t so much that 20,000 Republicans may have just voted for a Nazi. It’s the partisan political system where the party in power gets to redraw district maps every 10 years to maximize odds of retaining power by keeping races noncompetitive. “The seat is mathematically drawn like the majority of districts as a Democrat district seat,” Morrison said. “This is the larger issue citizens should recognize and be concerned about in Illinois. “The Democrats have controlled the district remap drawings for several decades now. The Democrat-controlled gerrymandering is unabashed and (is the reason) why we have a real one-party system throughout Illinois.” I accept Morrison’s explanation as based in fact and admire his skill at spinning this as the fault of Democrats. Still, I think the candidacy of Jones harms the Republican brand more than it does the Democrats.
On a national scale Wednesday, reaction to Jones’ win ranged from shock and disbelief to outrage across traditional and social media channels. “Arthur Jones is a Nazi, not a Republican. It is a disgrace that he has won the Republican nomination,” Norman Coleman, chair of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said in a statement. “The GOP didn’t invite Jones into the party,” Coleman said. “The only mistake was not running a candidate in an uncompetitive, safe-Democrat district.” The Illinois GOP continues to denounce Jones. A state party spokesman told The New York Times the party would devote resources to supporting a Republican to run as an independent against Lipinski in November. “Arthur Jones is not a real Republican; he is a Nazi whose disgusting, bigoted views have no place in our nation’s discourse,” Tim Schneider, the Illinois Republican Party chairman, said in a statement. The National Republican Congressional Committee issued a statement that did not mention Jones by name. . .”There is no gerrymandering in Illinois,” Brown said. “Their whining about that is not factual.” There was ample publicity prior to the election about Jones’ Nazi affiliations, he added. “How anybody could vote for this individual is mind-boggling,” Brown said. “It was a conscious effort to cast those votes.” I think the number of votes cast for Jones is another statement about the perils of uneducated voters. Despite record early-voting numbers, turnout ended up at just 28.5 percent of suburban Cook County’s 1.5 million registered voters. Turnout among younger voters was notably low — at 3.4 percent — despite heightened interest in the Lipinski-Newman race and a nonbinding referendum asking whether Cook County should legalize marijuana for recreational use. The measure passed by a nearly two-to-one margin. Millennials ages 18-27 cast just 16,780 ballots, Clerk David Orr reported. That was the lowest of any age group and compares to 76,696 for ages 58-67, 67,302 for ages 48-57 and 48,225 for ages 68-77.)

In Diersen v. GAO, Peter Fitzgerald appointed both the district court judge, Amy J. St. Eve, and the attorney who represented GAO, Patrick Fitzgerald. All of the aforesaid made it very clear that they favored patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. Eve granted Patrick Fitzgerald’s motion to deny me my 7th Amendment rights, that is, to deny me a jury trial. Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes used that to hint/imply/argue/shout that Peter Fitzgerald, Eve, and Patrick Fitzgerald viewed me as being someone who was lazy, stupid, bad, and even worse things.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: She may have both slapped him down and ruled in his favor back in 2013, but don’t count U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve among President Donald Trump’s Twitter followers. St. Eve — nominated by Trump to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals — appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday morning. When U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin asked her what she made of Trump’s tweets crowing about his victory in a trial St. Eve presided over, the judge replied with magisterial hauteur. “I have heard that, but I do not follow tweets!” she told the committee. The hearing was plain sailing for St. Eve and fellow nominee Michael Scudder, who have the backing of both Durbin and U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth.)

https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/21/politics/democrat-high-turnout-illinois/index.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The primaries in Illinois on Tuesday night were, for the most part melodramatic — some big names got scares but there were no major upsets. There was, however, some good news for Democrats: In the second of two statewide primaries this year (Texas being the other), turnout was significantly higher for Democrats than in either 2010 or 2014. There were just under 1.3 million votes cast in the Illinois Democratic primary Tuesday to just over 700,000 in the Republican primary. Put another way, 64% of the votes cast were on the Democratic line, compared with only 36% on the Republican line. Now, Illinois is a blue state, but even taking that into account, it was an impressive performance for Democrats. Dating back to 1998, there has never been a midterm year in which there was a higher percentage of two-party votes cast in the Illinois Democratic primary compared with 2018. Importantly, this includes 2010, when both the Democrats and Republicans had competitive gubernatorial primaries, like this year. In 2010, just 54% of all primary votes were cast in the Democratic primary when Republicans gained over 60 seats across the country and control of the US House.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Americans are relocating to retirement hot spots scattered around the country and returning to suburbia, according to Census Bureau figures released Thursday. The population of federally designated retirement destination counties rose 2% last year, almost three times the rate of national population growth, according to census county population estimates for the year that ended July 1. Almost three-quarters of a million Americans during that period moved into one of the 442 counties that the Agriculture Department tags as retiree spots. Previously they gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Diana Rauner: We’re moving to Italy if Bruce loses
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511364971-diana-rauner-we-re-moving-to-italy-if-bruce-loses
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner says he’ll fight for Illinoisans. But only if he wins re-election. If he loses, Rauner’s wife, Diana, says she and Bruce are out of here. “Bruce and I are moving to Italy,” a source says she flippantly told a group of “mostly Democrat” women from DuPage County last Thursday. The occasion was an event at the home of Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and his wife, Julie Cole Chirico, chief fundraiser for embattled, but Rauner-financed House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs). Diana Rauner’s Italy remark was a response to a question she received about Illinois’ stunning rate of outmigration. An attendee noted that several of her neighbors had left the state, asking Diana Rauner what her husband planned to do to encourage people to stay. “She made a vague comment about stopping Madigan and then said that, if Bruce lost and they couldn’t stop Madigan, they were moving to Italy,” the source told DuPage Policy Journal. “It was awkward.” In addition to employing his wife, Durkin and his campaign chief, David Walsh, are a longtime backers of Mayor Chirico, a moderate Republican who supports Rauner but actively opposed President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. The Rauners have traveled to Italy on official business during his administration. In Nov. 2016, Gov. Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel traveled to Rome along with State Sen. John Cullerton (D-Chicago) Chicago Ald. Ed Burke (D-14th), former social secretary to President Barack Obama, Desiree Rogers and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) to see then-Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich be elevated to cardinal. At a co-press conference with Emanuel in Vatican City, Rauner said “this time reminds us that the good lord did not make us Republicans or Democrats.” Seven months later, Rauner would break his promise to Cardinal Cupich that he would not sign a bill that would force Illinois taxpayers to pay for abortions.)

https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Candidates-in-Final-Push-Ahead-of-Illinois-Primary-477248143.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner spent his Sunday campaigning downstate. Meantime his challenger, state senator Jeanne Ives, criticized the $75-million dollar Rauner campaign. “He thinks he can use his money to spread lies about me,” she said, “to put him back into office and that’s pathetic.”)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Trump a power player in Illinois 2018 primary – Lynn Sweet
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/trump-a-power-player-in-illinois-2018-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump is a big player in Tuesday’s Illinois primary with Trump-fueled voting expected to boost 2018 turnout compared to 2010 and 2012, the most recent nonpresidential years. Who does that help the most? On the GOP side, it’s pro-Trump governor candidate Jeanne Ives, taking on Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been running from Trump. As for Democrats, the Trump factor benefits most the contenders who are able to seize the support of angry, newly energized voters. In the bigger primary races, that would include governor hopeful state Sen. Daniel Biss; House contender Marie Newman and Cook County Assessor challenger Fritz Kaegi. Here’s what I’ve learned about the Illinois Trump factors based on interviews with strategists, and my analysis of TV ads, direct mail and other political communications: Democrats furious over Trump’s 2016 victory, who usually don’t vote in nonpresidential years, are in this time. Those voters — younger, people of color and women — are likely more progressive, strategists tell me. Far fewer Republicans vote in Illinois primaries, so a candidate with a committed, animated base — that would be Ives — has an advantage. Rauner is wobbly on Trump. He’s loath to associate with Trump for fear of alienating Democratic and crossover GOP voters he will need in November. That is, should he be renominated since pro-Trump Ives, a state representative from Wheaton, has mustered a strong challenge from the right. The Democratic Governor’s Association is trying to throw the primary to Ives because she will be easier to beat in November. The DGA is running an ad praising her for being in “lockstep” with Trump — a pitch, wicked as it is from Democrats, to appeal to Trump primary voters turned off by Rauner.)

The more that you do to defend and advance the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform and the more that you do to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance the aforesaid planks, the more likely that Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs will succeed in getting someone to run against you.)

— Men, ask a woman to mentor you – Melissa Lamson (DIERSEN: I did that in early 1990. In my opinion, GAO failed/refused to promote into its Senior Executive Service a GS-15 Jewish woman a) who was my immediate supervisor during my last 4 years at GAO and b) who supervised my immediate supervisor the previous 4 years because she failed/refused to do more to waste my career and to get rid of me. Most, if not virtually all of my GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates DID NOT want to work for her, work with her, or supervise her because she was female, younger, Jewish, very intelligent, very demanding, and wealthy. She had an MBA from the University of Chicago and had passed the CPA examination on her first attempt. To turn her against me, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates stressed to her a) that I was conservative (she was liberal), b) that I was Republican (she was Democrat), c) that I was 100% German national origin (she was 100% Russian national origin), d) that I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran (she was Jewish), and e) that my ancestors had been in America since the 1840s (her ancestors were recent immigrants.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats and many Republicans in Illinois were horrified by the ad: a 60-second spot released by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s GOP primary challenger, Jeanne Ives, featuring a parade of politically incorrect takes on thorny cultural issues. A deep-voiced man portraying a transgender woman tells Rauner, “Thank you for signing legislation that lets me use the girls bathroom.” Then a young woman thanks Rauner for “making all Illinois families pay for my abortions.” But equally shocking to the content was the person who had made the ad possible: Richard Uihlein, a little-known Republican donor who had until recently been one of Rauner’s biggest supporters. After a fallout out with the governor over abortion policy, Uihlien gave $2.5 million to Ives in a single week this past January — essentially bankrolling her campaign to defeat Rauner in a Republican primary on Tuesday.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s well-known that nearly everyone in Donald Trump’s orbit has to sign a nondisclosure agreement, from business associates, to campaign employees, to women he may or may not have had an affair with. Therefore it is simultaneously galling and non-at-all surprising that Trump may have pressured senior White House staffers into signing NDAs, though they are members of the federal government, not his personal employees. Trump actually told the Washington Post in April 2016 that he intended to use NDAs in the White House, saying “when people are chosen by a man to go into government at high levels and then they leave government and they write a book about a man and say a lot of things that were really guarded and personal, I don’t like that.” He allowed that “there could be some kind of a law that you can’t do this,” and experts say he was on to something: ACLU: Public employees can’t be gagged by private agreements. These so-called NDAs are unconstitutional and unenforceable.)

Rauner has said Ives is too far to the right to get elected in Illinois. Ives says Rauner lied about the abortion bill and is lying about her in ads that accuse her of being linked to House Speaker MICHAEL MADIGAN, D-Chicago. She also says Rauner doesn’t deserve another term after his first one. Ives got a lot of attention by running an ad, roundly criticized, that showed actors (including a man in a dress) seen by critics as stereotypical negative views of groups including transgender people. Some newspapers have cited that ad as divisive and the reason they can’t endorse Ives. It did get attention, but also gave people pause. I think Rauner gets the nomination — but Ives could well be close. And if she even overcomes him, it won’t be a shock. . .On the GOP side, Rauner backs Urbana attorney ERIKA HAROLD, and she beats DuPage County Board member GARY GRASSO.)

https://townhall.com/columnists/brucebialosky/2018/03/18/trump-the-turnaround-manager-n2461290
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump has gotten flack for not filling a significant number of political appointee positions in his first year. His answer to that is “You don’t need them.” He has cut positions across departments by eliminating people who probably don’t like the guy anyway. In his first six months, the federal employee count went down 10,700. It is not just what he cut, but likewise what he has not added. In their first six months, President Bush (the younger) added 36,000 and President Obama added 60,000. While 10,700 may be a small dent in the total number of federal workers (2.8 million), it is still headed in the right direction.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— How Mike Pompeo Could Save the State Department – SAMANTHA POWER (DIERSEN: Did you “start at the bottom?” I started at the bottom a) at the Post Office in 1966 when I was 18 as a GS-4, currently $15.85/hour in today’s dollars, b) at IRS in 1971 as a GS-7 Revenue Officer, currently $45,703/year in today’s dollars, and c) at GAO in 1980 as a GS-9 Step 10 Analyst, currently $72,677/year in today’s dollars. If I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran, GAO would not have forced me to “start at the bottom” and suffer a $19,203/year pay cut in today’s dollars. To justify forcing me to “start at the bottom,” GAO dismissed the fact a) that GAO audits IRS, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had almost 9 years of experience working for IRS, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, and f) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979.)

Hiring declined by more than a third from 2016 to 2017, and the number of young people seeking to take the Foreign Service exam has dropped significantly from the rates seen during the previous two administrations. Attracting the right personnel will require Mr. Pompeo to work with Congress and take other steps to change obsolete rules that, for instance, discourage former State Department employees from returning, and require even experienced people to start at the bottom if they have not previously worked in government — denying our diplomatic corps the ability to draw on specialized expertise.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Taping “Connected to Chicago with Bill Cameron” for Sunday night at 7, Democratic candidate for governor Chris Kennedy was controversial talking about Gov Rauner’s GOP challenger State Representative Jeanne Ives. Chris Kennedy is candid. When Cameron asked who he’d rather run against, Bruce Rauner or Jeanne Ives, he brought up religion and said Ives “has no moral core” that he can identify with. “You know Jeannie Ives, it’s kind of interesting to me, she’s proved you can be a Catholic without being Christian,” said Kennedy. “And if you want evidence of that, you can see the ad that she ran attacking immigrants in the United States which were largely the people of Abraham in this country. We don’t attack immigrants. To attack the LGBT community in that ad. That’s not what we do.” The Ives campaign has a biting response. It says, “Chris Kennedy might want to check with Cardinal Cupich or Pope Francis on matters like respecting and protecting unborn life before he starts excommunicating people from the Church.” It adds “Kennedy is just another vacuous, virtue-signaling Leftist hack who worships at the altar of big government and prays to the almighty Mike Madigan.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The political polarization that—now more than ever—dominates Washington is making federal employees deeply uncomfortable. On the right, many attack civil servants as part of a putative “deep state” bent on sabotaging President Donald Trump’s agenda, and they want to restrain or get rid of those whom they derisively describe as “unaccountable bureaucrats.” And on the left, some castigate federal employees as complicit in policies that are “unconscionable,” “undemocratic” or worse.)

https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Political-Hit-Job-Rauner-Responds-to-Harold-Gay-Adoption-Controversy-476616963.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The recent controversy over what Erika Harold said while a contestant for the Miss Illinois pageant 18 years ago is a political hit job, Gov. Bruce Rauner said Monday. He said he still supports her candidacy for attorney general, but how do Rauner and his opponent Jeanne Ives stand on the issue of gay adoptions? “I’ve known Erika Harold for about five years,” Rauner said. “I have found her to be a person of great talent and integrity.” Harold has not released a public schedule since the NBC 5 report last week that when she competed in the pageant in 2000 and was asked if she had to choose to place a child in foster care with either a loving gay couple or a heterosexual couple who were known child abusers. Sources in the room that days said she selected the child abusers. “It’s a preposterous question and I know many loving, excellent parents who are gay couples–and that would be a good option,” Rauner said. Jeanie Ives responded to the question as well. “Nobody ever places any child in an abusive situation–period,” she said. The four sources with knowledge of the pageant, including a contestant who watched the videotaped interview, confirmed Harold’s response. Other officials have taken offense to the comment. “I know there are anti-gay people out there,” Democrat state Rep. Greg Harri said. “But the disturbing thing to me is that she would want a child to go into a family of abusers.” As for the state of the GOP race, while Rauner leads in the polls, Ives, who is fighting ads that link her to House Speaker Mike Madigan, believes she could score an upset. “We know the most motivated voters are the ones that are showing up at the poll,” she said. “And when that comes up–I’ll tell you what–that is real victory on March 20 for us.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-daniel-biss-central-committee-20180313-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic governor candidate Daniel Biss is exploring ways to help insurgent candidates for the state party’s leadership committee and challenge House Speaker Michael Madigan’s chairmanship. A Biss aide said the state senator from Evanston has talked with campaign attorneys about what fundraising mechanism could be used to assist challengers to about a dozen members the Democratic State Central Committee. The 36-member panel elects the party chairman. It’s made up of one man and one woman from each of Illinois’ 18 congressional districts, and the seats are on the primary ballot. There were no details yet on whether any arrangement had been made. Madigan has been actively backing current committee members seeking re-election. Such a move would be a furtherance of Biss’ effort to support progressive causes in his bid to gain support for governor from the more liberal wing of the Democratic Party. On Tuesday, he is expected to add endorsements from Indivisible groups in the Lakeview neighborhood and Oak Park. The Indivisible groups were formed in the wake of President Donald Trump’s election. Over the weekend, rival candidate Chris Kennedy said he believed the Democratic Party establishment should welcome such groups into the party fold but said they had been rebuffed. “It’s great to see Chris Kennedy wants progressive groups involved in the state party, especially since those progressive groups have overwhelmingly endorsed Daniel Biss for governor,” said Biss spokesman Tom Elliott.)

Five Naperville precincts were identified as having some of the lowest voter turnout in terms of the number of registered voters, so students went door to door in those precincts to encourage people to vote. Students returned with feedback from residents, some of it positive, and some of it negative. Some of the negative comments included, “Voting is too much effort,” “All politicians are liars.” Positive feedback included, “Voting is a way to have an impact on society,” and “I vote because I want to see good things happen in my country.” One resident told students, “I like it when you’re not selling anything,” to which the students replied, “We’re only selling Democracy.” After the March 20 election, students and their teachers will review voter turnout numbers to see if they were able to positively affect voter turnout in the precincts they visited.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180312/why-dupage-democrats-may-ask-some-county-board-nominees-to-drop-out-of-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Elizabeth Chaplin, the only Democrat on the county board, said candidates have been aware of the strategy since last summer. While she didn’t sign the pledge, Chaplin said she likely will step aside if she’s not the top vote-getter among the three Democrats seeking her party’s nod for two District 2 seats. The challenge, she said, is that Republicans normally pull about 20,000 ballots in DuPage primaries while Democrats pull only 5,000. If those numbers hold this year — and there are indications they might based on the number of campaign signs and the number of DuPage politicians who marched in recent parades — the Democrats’ chances of winning any board seat will drop dramatically unless they focus their efforts on a smaller number of races. “We can have more candidates on the ballot and lose or fewer candidates on the ballot and have a better chance of winning,” Chaplin said. While the plan was known in Democratic circles, it didn’t gain much public attention until John Basco, one of three Democrats seeking two seats in District 3, posted it on social media. Basco said he originally agreed to step down if he finished second in the primary, but has since changed his mind.)

— BEYOND DISGUSTING, BEYOND TRAGIC: Bill on medical marijuana use in schools moves to House floor – Angela Underwood
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511359254-bill-on-medical-marijuana-use-in-schools-moves-to-house-floor
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I remember how this went down the first time when we approved using marijuana products for epilepsy and I was in favor of it, and then the sponsor who is here today immediately changed all the rules in a floor amendment that didn’t go back to committee,” Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) said, adding Lang was doing the same thing again. “Now we know what the intent is, and the intent is to eventually have school personnel be the ones who are administering this drug.” She called the bill a a “slippery slope,” though it was narrowly tailored to a child sitting before her at the witness panel with her parents. “We started with a four-year pilot program for medical marijuana, and we have made changes every single year since,” Ives said. “Now the concern quite frankly is that before you know it, it’s an edible not an oil, there are all sorts of other conditions and not just epilepsy and then it is administered by school nurses or other personnel.” Ives made it clear to the family that she will support the bill for them, but she “will be watching,” Lang for future changes in the bill that he may try to slip in. . .Prefacing his comments with the fact that he comes from the old school, Rep. John Cavaletto (R-Salem) remembers when marijuana had only a negative connotation before it was considered to be medically healing, however he still sees it as a problem. “I visited Colorado not too long ago and happened to be there for about five days and did walk from one restaurant back to my hotel every evening with my wife and I witnessed these people on the sidewalks, in the corner and on the grassy knolls are drugged out,” Cavaletto said. “That’s the side of marijuana I see.” He said he cannot seem to put it in his mind that of all the drugs now produced, medical marijuana is the only one that can control epileptic seizures for children, but his thoughts are countered by the parents that sat before him, making him reconsider the notion.)
— House panel backs bill making physicals for substitute teachers optional – Angela Underwood (DIERSEN: Democrats run the schools. Of course, if physicals are made optional, those Democrats will waive the requirement for Democrat applicants and impose the requirement on Republican applicants. Overwhelmingly, my superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government who had serious health problems were Democrats.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511359301-house-panel-backs-bill-making-physicals-for-substitute-teachers-optional
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) brought up the irony of having unfit substitute teacher supervising a gym class. “Nobody says you have to hire them,” Sherer said. Sherer said the bill was about giving more rights back to local control. “I agree with that too; however you have issues here because once you leave it open to interpretation by the school district then you are absolutely opening it up for discrimination, because they forced someone to get a physical or they declined them because they felt like they were not physically fit enough for the position,” Ives said. “Then you put them (school districts) in a conundrum, you see.” Next comes workers’ compensation problems, Ive said, noting if a substitute gets injured doing an exercise they are not up for, the school district could become liable; however, Scherer said it is “about local control and it is as simple as that.” After Ives voted no and left the meeting, Rep. Robert Pritchard (R-Hinckley) sought clarification on the bill, asking if Sherer was looking to temporarily waive the licensing in an effort to get needed teachers sooner and was told no; he then asked if the “teachers association and management alliance” approved the bill. “There are no opponents,” Sherer said. Rep. David Olsen (R-Downers Grove) said he was confused. “Maybe I am the only confused one whether it is evidence of physical fitness or a physical where I go to my doctor and I get a physical,” Olsen said. Sherer said it is not about how many sit-ups a substitute can perform or times they can run around the block, it is a money issue, alleviating the ancillary educator from coming up with even more funds than necessary to be certified. “I respect the concerns Rep. Ives had about workers’ comp and such, but you are correct we do have a teacher shortage and I think we need to take some steps to address that shortage,” Olsen said. Rep. John Cavaletto (R-Salem) shared Ives’ apprehension. “I really don’t like that,” Cavaletto, adding though he understands the shortage, that should not be a reason to exclude some substitutes from mandates teachers themselves are required to follow. He then asked about the cost of a physical, which Sherer said could cost up to $400, but physical or not a substitute would have to be free of communicable disease. “How many of those are there I wonder,” Cavaletto said. Though he was not thrilled with the bill, Cavaletto said he would support the bill due to the teacher shortage. The panel approved HB4706 and the bill moved to the House floor.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20180311/news/303119996/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The main events in a political campaign used to happen in the open: a debate, the release of a major TV ad or a public event where candidates tried to earn a spot on the evening news or the next day’s front page. That was before the explosion of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as political platforms. Now some of a campaign’s most pivotal efforts happen in the often-murky world of social media, where ads can be targeted to ever-narrower slices of the electorate and run continuously with no disclosure of who is paying for them. (FROM THE ARTICLE: In a statement, Harold campaign spokesman Jason Heffley said, “It is troubling that NBC Chicago chose to run with a political hit piece based on anonymous sources that occurred almost twenty years ago. “Two decades ago when Erika was 20 years old, she did not support same sex adoption. It was a different era when many from both political parties did not support it. Erika, like many others, has changed her position on the issue over the last twenty years. She acknowledges that position was wrong and now strongly supports same sex adoption and foster placement. “She does not recall the specific exchange alleged by anonymous sources. If some form of that exchange did occur, it was wrong and it is in no way reflective of how Erika feels or has lived her life. She has spent her career working to protect the interests of the underserved and advocating for those who have been bullied and abused.”)

NORTH COOK NEWS
— Katie Miller battles Springfield GOP machine in 53rd House District primary race – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: This speaks volumes about the House Republican Organization.)
https://northcooknews.com/stories/511359238-miller-battles-springfield-gop-machine-in-53rd-house-district-primary-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Through the House Republican Organization (HRO), the Republican machine in Springfield is dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into primary campaigns of their handpicked candidates. One of HRO’s toughest, more expensive campaigns is in the 53rd District against Mt. Prospect’s Katie Miller. The HRO’s candidate there is 29-year-old Eddie Corrigan. HRO has given over $150,000 to his campaign just since late February, according to Illinois State Board of Elections records. Corrigan lives with his father in Arlington Heights and has a colorful party history on full display on Facebook. The 39-year-old Miller is a registered nurse and married mother of three who pays nearly $10,000 a year in property taxes. In TV commercials and mailers, Corrigan’s HRO-funded campaign — just as with other HRO smears targeting those running against their handpicked candidates — is saying that Miller is a Democrat at heart and has ties to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. Miller, a self-described “across-the-board conservative,” calls the ads “outright lies.” “I was carrying posters for Republican candidates ever since I was 4,” Miller said. “I have never even met Madigan.” The Corrigan campaign has also criticized Miller for appealing her property taxes, describing the process as “shady.” Millions of homeowners in Cook County appeal their taxes each year, standard practice in a state with the highest property taxes in the nation. Corrigan doesn’t pay property taxes. After the hit ads against Miler, the Liberty Principles PAC financed mailers containing Facebook photos that show Corrigan in full party mode: one shows his head back chugging from a beer bottle, and another shows his tongue out and beer can in hand during a St. Patrick’s Day celebration; in others, he’s making an obscene gesture. A caption with the photos reads: “These are worth at least 1,000 words. But here are ten: We Have Enough Children In Springfield. Don’t Send Any More.” Corrigan refers to himself as a conservative, but in a debate with Miller he waffled on the issues, especially social ones. Miller says she will fight for the rollback of the 34 percent income tax hike approved last summer, the repeal of the taxpayer-funded abortion law (HB 40) Gov. Bruce Rauner signed in September and the repeal of the statewide “sanctuary” bill the governor signed in August. Other conservative primary candidates battling the HRO and their handpicked candidates include Marko Sukovic in the 59th District and Jillian Rose Bernas in the 56th District.)

In your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, in America, and in the world, are there more people who are a) anti-Trump than Trump supporters, b) anti-Protestant than Protestant, c) anti-conservative than conservative, d) anti-patriotic than patriotic, e) anti-Republican than Republican, f) anti-American than American, g) anti-White than White, h) anti-male than male, i) anti-older people than older people, j) anti-rich people than rich people, k) anti-gun owners than gun owners, l) anti-German Americans than German Americans, and m) anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors than those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time? Sadly for me, if not tragically for me, ever-increasingly, I am a minority in more and more and more ways. Ever-increasingly, the Republican Party dumps those who share my demographics.)
http://www.gastongazette.com/opinion/20180309/my-turn-what-does-republican-look-like-anyway
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Historically, discrimination has to do with a majority, or the politically powerful, keeping a minority under their heel. In the U.S. that has included women, Africans, Indians, Irish, Italians, Catholics, Jews and Chinese. More recently, but harder to identify, are the LBGT adherents. (If your favorite was left out, my apologies) In a nutshell, these groups have no choice about their identity, so laws about discriminating against them are understandable. But what is a Democrat or Republican or a Libertarian that one can complain they have a right to equal representation at the ballot box? Were they born that way? Is it a religious belief, or a demographic affliction which requires protections under the law? No, they are no different than a sports team, which one chooses, for various reasons, as the team they support. Can you tell the difference between a Democrat or Republican or a Constitutionalist by looking at them? Only if they’re working for their team near an election. Like Panther’s fans, they proudly show their affiliation. But that affiliation can easily change. Democrats become Republicans or independents and vice versa. On what then, do Democrats base their challenges to a gerrymandered district? They say they want an equal chance to win and the districting the legislatures have done, which appears legal under the Constitution, doesn’t give them those chances.)

Dillard, Brady, and Rutherford ran to the right of Rauner. What if Brady and Rutherford had withdrawn and had thrown their support to Dillard? Why has Rauner gone so strongly negative against Ives? Rauner talks and acts like he wants those in Illinois who reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform to vote for him in the primary election and in the general election. And the notion that we would nominate JB Pritzker, Mike Madigan’s candidate with ties to Rod Blagojevich and Joe Berrios is playing right into Rauner’s hands.” Biss warns don’t assume Rauner can’t win.)

— Drawing legislative maps is ultimate way to reward friends, punish enemies – Rich Miller (DIERSEN: In 2015, to get rid of me, nasty vicious disgusting politicians succeeded in getting the DuPage County Election Commission (DCEC), the officers of the DuPage County Republican Central Committee (DCRCC), and the officers of the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) to outrageously gerrymander my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton. Without giving me a timely opportunity to object, the DCEC, DCRCC, and MTRCC took away about 100 residences from the west side of my precinct and gave me about 100 residences from the west side of Jeanne Ives’s precinct 86 to the east, including Ives’ residence. But then, they redrew Ives into Precinct 65 to the southeast, I am told, because she successfully insisted that be done. Nasty vicious disgusting politicians use gerrymandering to get rid of those like me a) who refuse to glorify and praise them, b) who refuse to pander to them, c) who refuse to serve as one of their operatives or dupes, or d) who refuse to give them money. I should have sued them; maybe I still can.)

— Rauner Compares Fair Share Fees To Corruption (DIERSEN: Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hate unions, former union members, current union members, and future union members. What does Rauner and his supporters think of former union members? I was a dues-paying union member for almost 12 years, for almost 3 years while I worked for the Post Office 1966-1969 and for almost 9 years while I worked for IRS 1971-1980. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years 1980-1997. My Democrat GAO superiors hated unions, hated former union members, hated current union members, and hated future union members. GAO did not unionize until 2007. If GAO had been unionized in 1997, I might still be a GAO employee.)

— Poll: 76 percent support a 3 percent surtax on (income over $1 million a year) (DIERSEN: What percent want a 3 percent surtax on those who are 1) Trump supporters, 2) Protestant, 3) conservative, 4) patriotic, 5) Republican, 6) American, 7) White, 8) male, 9) over age 40, 10) rich (net worth let’s say over $1 million), 11) gun owners, 12) German American, 13) draft avoiders, and/or 14) those whose ancestors have been in America since let’s say 1850? Those who have income over $1 million a year and all 14 of the aforesaid demographics would pay a 45% surtax.)
https://capitolfax.com/2018/03/09/poll-76-percent-support-a-3-percent-surtax-on-millionaires/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are some areas in which a majority of voters would support increased revenue, starting with the so-called “millionaire’s tax,” which would impose an extra 3 percent levy on income over $1 million, favored by three-quarters [76 percent, 21 oppose, with 57 percent strongly in favor] of respondents in the sample. Nearly as many [72 percent in favor, 24 percent oppose, with 47 percent strongly in favor] would favor a constitutional amendment to allow a graduated income tax, with higher rates for higher earners and lower rates for lower earners. A slight plurality (49 percent favor, 46 percent oppose) would favor legalized gambling in Illinois to raise state revenues [23 percent strongly favor and 28 percent strongly oppose]. Less popular were a sales tax on services [39 percent favor, 58 percent oppose, with 36 percent strongly opposed] and a tax on gasoline to fund highway, road, and bridge improvements [42 percent favor, 57 percent oppose, with 41 percent strongly opposed). A recurring idea is for the state to tax retirement income, such as pensions and social security. This idea is widely unpopular, with 74 percent opposing and only 22 percent in favor. However, in a follow-up question in which only retirement income above $100,000 would be taxed, majorities are in favor. Combining the 22 percent who favored it in the first question with the 52 percent of the 745 initial opponents who would favor it with the exemption, 60 percent of the total sample favor taxing retirement income above $100,000.)
