My Democrat IRS superiors were making it ever-increasingly clear that they would never promote me to GS-13, currently $109,732/year. GAO claimed to be nonpartisan. The GAO Chicago Office Staff manager (Bill) who arranged for my transfer assured me that under him, GAO would a) quickly promote me to GS-11 Step 10 (currently $100,084/year), b) quickly promote me back to GS-12 Step 5, and c) quickly promote me to GS 13. But immediately after I transferred, the Democrats who ran GAO’s Chicago Office replaced Bill with a Democrat Staff Manager (Dave) who was extremely anti-Republican, if not a Republican-hater. To delay my promotions, that is, to get me, Dave used Affirmative Action and up-or-out a) to give me bad job assignments, b) to give me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, c) to assign me to supervise the office’s most problematic employees, d) to turn all my superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates against me, and e) to kept me off audits of IRS. But then, in 1986, because Dave had gone on extended sick leave, Bill was finally able to get me assigned to audits of IRS and to promote me to GS-13. But then, in 1987, Dave came back and a) threatened me to never apply for a promotion again and forced Bill to retire. Dave then a) threw me off audits of IRS at the end of 1988, b) gave me an extremely bad job assignment at the start of 1989, c) got my supervisor to give me extremely unfair performance expectations and appraisals, d) turned my four subordinates against me, and e) ranked me at the bottom of my coworkers for pay-for-performance (PFP) purposes. That forced me to seek help from my Republican Congressman Henry Hyde. Thanks to Hyde, Dave reduced his efforts to get rid of me somewhat. But Dave still succeed in a) keeping me off audits of IRS for the rest of my GAO career, b) always ranking me in the bottom half of my coworkers for PFP purposes, and c) forcing me to take GAO’s early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. It’s simple physics: You have limited availability, you advantage somebody to include, you disadvantage someone else. Mr. Fitzpatrick writes that when Thomas Jefferson High, a magnet school in Virginia, was unable politically to use race as a factor in admissions, it started using middle schools as proxies for race. I know that story well. In the 1960s, I was honored to attend the University of Chicago High School, one of the best in the country and predominantly Jewish. The Ivy League schools, feeling that there were too many of “them” gaining admission based on merit, had strict quotas on admissions from my school. I would focus on a) my Democrat superiors in the federal government, b) those who have/had lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, and Illinois, c) those who I have sued, d) those who destroy those like me who they cannot manipulate or dominate, who refuse to glorify and praise them, who refuse to pander to them, who refuse to serve as one of their operatives or dupes, who refuse to cover up there wrong doing, and/or who refuse to give them money, e) those who blame me for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems, f) those who despise/hate those who have more or less money than they have, and h) those who despise/hate those who share my demographics: conservative, Republican, White, male, old (born in 1948), draft-avoider, married (since 1978), childless, Protestant, German American (100%), and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time (1844). I would focus on those who reject the equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) plank in the Republican Party platform. I would focus on those who are/were active in Republican politics to bring more preference to themselves and to those who share their demographics. I would focus on those who blame their problems on those like me who are conservative, Republican, White, male, older, non-poor, Protestant, German American, and/or have ancestors who have been in America for a long time.

Moynes outlined a process for finding your “Unique Ability.” You start by ruling out things at which you are incompetent, that you do only marginally well, or you absolutely can’t stand. Instead, you should look for activities and talents to share that you love to do and that you do really well. Your “Unique Ability” is found in the “things you love to do and do superbly.” Phase four, “Reinvent & Rewire,” is reached by those who successfully break through phase three. Once you have found your unique ability, it’s time to find your “Sweet Spot.” This is the intersection of what the world needs, what you are good at, what you love to do and what you can be rewarded for either monetarily or emotionally.)
