For me, it is the candidate’s failure/refusal to defend/advance a) the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform and/or b) the illegal drugs, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving), and the rest of the planks in the Republican Party platform. For me, it is the candidate’s failure/refusal to oppose the promotion of dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, diminishment of Second Amendment rights, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. In Illinois, the more actions that “Republican” activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. take against the IRP platform, the more that they shout that they are really Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, or RINOs. To get votes from Democrats, from Libertarians, and from Greens, “Republican” candidates who run as RINOs, that is, who run as anti-Republicans, want Republicans to oppose them. Which candidates on the November 6, 2018 ballot in your precinct are you going to help elect? Which of those candidates really do not want you to help elect them? If confirmed, Kavanaugh, 53, will become one of the most powerful and influential people in government for what could be decades, and he’ll lock in a healthy six-figure salary, too. Kavanaugh currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where judges make $220,600 a year, according to the U.S. Courts website. Associate justices on the Supreme Court make $255,300, while the Chief Justice, currently John Roberts, makes $267,000. These salaries usually increase by $2,000-$3,000 each year. A seat on the court comes with some desirable benefits. Federal judges have the option to enroll in insurance plans through the Federal Employee Health Benefits system, whose website claims it offers “the widest selection of health plans in the country.” And justices can look forward to a generous retirement package. If they retire at 70 after serving 10 years, or at 65 after serving 15 years, they qualify for an annual pension equal to their highest full salary. There is also a summer break when court isn’t in session between July and October. It’s not exactly a vacation, as justices use the summer to prepare for cases scheduled for the fall, but it is when they do most of their traveling, much of which is subsidized, and when they lecture and teach for extra pay. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A letter which demands that Maine Township Republican Committeeman Char Foss-Eggemann of Park Ridge call for the resignation of Township Trustee Dave Carrabotta because of allegations that he inappropriately touched fellow Trustee Kim Jones, has not yet been sent to Eggemann. However, according to some people knowledgeable about the letter, it will soon be mailed to the committeeman as well as Cook County Republican Party leader Sean Morrison, state GOP leader Tim Schneider, and others. Meanwhile, an investigation into the sexual harassment claims by Jones, launched by the town board after May 22 when the charges first surfaced, will take another week and a half to complete, said township Supervisor Laura Morask. She indicated that one more person has to be interviewed by the lawyer assigned to perform the probe. Morask would not comment further. The letter insisting that Eggemann act on the matter was prompted in part by some Republicans demanding that House Speaker Mike Madigan step down because of harassment and bullying complaints leveled against several Democrats. Marilyn Smolenski, Republican candidate who’s running against incumbent Democrat Marty Moylan in the November General Election, has been one of those voices demanding Madigan’s resignation. She has been highly critical of Moylan for not standing up to Madigan by demanding that he resign. Eggemann is a strong supporter of Smolenski, who lives in Park Ridge. Moylan recently blasted Smolenski for backing “one of the biggest perverts in the U.S., Trump.” Added Moylan, “He’s one of the biggest pigs in the U.S. I’m not silent. Tell that Trump backing pistol packing Trump supporter that I back women’s rights and I voted for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).” Smolenski owns a company that sells pistol holders for women. On the advice of the township attorney, Jones confronted Carrabotta with her accusations of inappropriately touching her backside on May 22. Carrabotta flatly denied the allegations and demanded an immediate closed door meeting where the issue could be discussed. Jones accuses Carrabotta of touching her on three separate occasions during township events in late 2017 and 2018. According to people familiar with the letter, it’s believed that at least 10 local Republican women will sign it by the time it is mailed to Eggemann. Among the words used in the letter are “outrageous” and “disturbing.” It also says that Jones has a solid reputation in the community and was slated by committeeman Eggemann to run for the township position. Carrabotta has told the Journal & Topics that the matter is “confidential”. In a statement released yesterday (Tuesday) by State Republican chairman Tim Schneider, he said, “The Illinois Republican Party strongly believes that sexual harassment has no place in any workplace, public or private, and that allegations must be investigated swiftly by independent parties. In addition to the C.B.O., one often hears attacks on the Congressional Research Service, the Joint Committee on Taxation and the Government Accountability Office. Lately, the G.A.O. has been the prime target. Appropriators are cutting its budget by $42 million, forcing furloughs and cutbacks in investigations that identify billions of dollars in savings yearly. So misguided is this effort that Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma and one of the most conservative members of Congress, came to the agency’s defense. In a report issued by his office on Nov. 16, Senator Coburn pointed out that the G.A.O.’s budget has been cut by 13 percent in real terms since 1992 and its work force reduced by 40 percent — more than 2,000 people. By contrast, Congress’s budget has risen at twice the rate of inflation and nearly doubled to $2.3 billion from $1.2 billion over the last decade. Mr. Coburn’s report is replete with examples of budget savings recommended by G.A.O. He estimated that cutting its budget would add $3.3 billion a year to government waste, fraud, abuse and inefficiency that will go unidentified.)

Bruce Rauner, who barely escaped an embarrassing defeat in the March primary, needs a united Republican Party behind him if he’s going to defeat his well-heeled Democratic opponent, J.B. Pritzker, in the November election. But that is looking more and more difficult. As time passes, estranged conservatives appear more determined to see Rauner lose and Pritzker win. Two recent events demonstrate the problem Rauner has. Conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton almost ended Rauner’s dream of a second four-year term in the primary. Rauner received just 51 percent of the primary vote to 49 percent for Ives. Despite that, some Republican leaders hoped that Ives might be persuaded to support Rauner in the general election. After all, if Pritzker wins, Democrats will regain total control of state government and her political party will be relegated to the irrelevant status it endured from 2003 to 2015, when the GOP captured the governor’s office. But time has not healed the sting of defeat for Ives. Asked last week about her intentions, an embittered Ives indicated there is no way she’ll endorse Rauner. “No. I’m not going to endorse the governor. I’m going to let him buy back his voters,” she said. Ives’ differences with Rauner are strictly ideological. A social conservative, she deeply resented Rauner’s decision to sign legislation authorizing taxpayer-funded abortions. Ives is not alone, as demonstrated by the strong support she received in the primary. To make matters worse for Rauner, there’s state Sen. Sam McCann of Plainview. He’s masquerading as a conservative disenchanted with Rauner. But for him, this is strictly business.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: When President Donald Trump recently issued three executive orders that made it easier to fire poorly performing government employees, the backlash from public-sector unions was fierce. Union leaders did not like it—one called it an “assault on federal employees.” But a recent poll shows a slight majority of government workers—51 percent—supports the administration’s efforts. Moreover, only 24 percent of federal employees oppose the recent executive orders and another quarter are unsure. The level of support among federal workers for executive orders that will make it easier to fire them is surprising, but only at first glance. In fact, Trump’s executive orders represent modest reforms that will not affect the vast majority of employees and, in fact, likely will improve their working conditions. For instance, one of the new executive orders imposes a 30-day limit on the time an agency can give an employee to improve his poor performance before being fired. When a federal manager determines that an employee is not up to the job, he must present that employee with a performance improvement plan as a last-ditch effort to turn his performance around. Prior to the president’s executive order, agencies set the length of this grace period, which stretched to 120 days in some cases. The new executive order also gives managers more freedom to decide how to punish misconduct. Prior to Trump’s executive orders, managers were ordinarily bound to progress through lesser disciplinary steps from verbal warning and written notices to suspensions, demotions, and removal from the civil service. Now, managers are free to choose a punishment that fits the crime. Some federal employees no doubt take advantage of their insulation from accountability, but most civil servants are hard-working and dedicated—a fact attested to by the 70 percent customer satisfaction rate among those who receive some federal service. These diligent workers must pick up the slack for those who do not do their share, then are sometimes denied opportunities for advancement by the dead weight above them. And, as anyone who has worked in an office environment knows, unmotivated and unruly co-workers can take a heavy toll on morale. So, although a few bad apples may prefer to keep the status quo, it is not surprising most federal employees welcome these provisions of the president’s executive orders.)

ROSKAM: What makes these different is these are going after our allies with whom we really have no conflict. And I think that this will have an adverse impact on small manufacturers in my constituency that I’ve heard directly from – and not just the manufacturers but obviously their employees and clearly American consumers. I think the smarter move is for us to focus our time and energy on China, which – there’s all kinds of trade infractions. And this is not well-placed resources in a fight that we really shouldn’t be having right now. SHAPIRO: President Trump doesn’t appear to be backing down. Do you think it’s now the role of Congress to stop him through legislation? ROSKAM: So the challenge with stopping the president through legislation obviously is the president would have to sign the bill. So said another way, these original trade structures were put in place to give presidents authorities to ease up on trade tariffs and to make it easier for commerce to pass between countries. It was not necessarily contemplated that you’d have a president that was tougher on a country than Congress was. So I think we’re very much in the persuasion mode. On Thursday, former CIA officer John Kiriakou became the latest person to take to the talk-show circuit, making a direct appeal to the president to wipe clean his conviction for leaking the identity of a fellow CIA officer. “I would be forever indebted to him for a pardon,” Kiriakou said during an interview on “Fox & Friends” on Fox News, a program that Trump often watches as part of his morning routine. Kiriakou was charged in 2012 with leaking classified information about the CIA waterboarding of an al-Qaida suspect at a secret site in Thailand.
