(FROM THE ARTICLE: As promised, my paycheck has gone up by about $175. But when I went to see my accountant this year to go over my taxes, I found out that instead of getting a $3,000 refund like usual, I’ll owe more than $1,500 in taxes next year beyond what was already withheld — all on the same income. I was so shocked I asked my accountant to check again. But he came back with the same math and that same unexpected number. That’s when I realized that the GOP’s plan is a classic bait-and-switch. And everyday Americans like my family are going to pay the price very soon. Thanks to a cap on deductions for state and local taxes (SALT) — deductions that benefit many middle and upper-middle class families — and other changes to deductions, many hardworking Americans will find themselves paying more in 2019. Instead of the refunds we’re accustomed to, we’ll be the ones writing checks. The GOP tax plan added nearly $1.5 trillion to the deficit, while slashing taxes for the very wealthy and big corporations. According to the Tax Policy Center, 83 percent of the tax bill’s cuts will go to the top 1 percent in our country. Ending SALT deductions is a way for the GOP to help raise revenue to cover the cost of those cuts — leaving working families like mine to foot the bill for tax giveaways to those who need them least. For me, that means I’ll have less money to take care of my family and my property. Last year, I reinvested my return to make important improvements to my house and the apartment I rent out. Some of these costs I can predict, but there’s always something that comes up whether it’s basic maintenance or serious roof repairs. And as a parent with one daughter in college and one about to start, every penny counts. A $4,500 change in my taxes is a lot of pennies. I’ve saved to make sure my children’s college education isn’t a heavy financial burden on them, but without my usual return, my financial plans may need to change.)

David Olsen gives immunity from criminal and civil penalties if someone finds an animal left inside a car and must act immediately to save its life by breaking in. The person would be required to make sure there is no other way to get to the trapped animal, notify law enforcement of the situation and leave a note on the vehicle’s windshield. Republican state Rep. Peter Breen, of Lombard, said “some pretty significant concerns here that ought to be addressed.” He asked whether the vehicle owner would be responsible if the pet attacks the concerned citizen and what would happen if the animal is injured or killed during the rescue. (FROM THE ARTICLE: According to her website, a possible motivation for the shooting could have been tied to her many YouTube accounts, which she says have seen a decline in viewership over the past few months. She embedded videos from the biggest YouTubers on the platform on the site, including massive creator Casey Neistat. In them, they talk about the YouTube “Ad-apocalypse” where many users are seeing massive dips in traffic, subscriber count loss, and de-monetization of videos. Neistat has more than 9,000,000 subscribers and made a famous video about the YouTube ad revenue scare for creators. It appears that Aghdam was disgruntled by the changes in the YouTube platform. She wrote on her website, “Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!” She goes on to quote Adolf Hitler saying, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.” The rest of her message targets YouTube and censorship. “There is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos.” Aghdam’s website shows screenshots of her “reduced” and “supressed” videos. She referred to a specific video that appeared to be an instructional video for a workout saying, “This video got age-restricted after new, close-minded YouTube employees got control of my farsi YouTube channel last year, 2016, and began filtering my videos to reduce views and suppress and discourage me from making my videos!” Feb. 20, YouTube enacted a new advertising policy that demonetized channels with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time. Though Aghdam’s main English channel had more than 5,000 subscribers, many of her videos appeared to be demonetized.)

We are home to large groups of immigrant communities, and we fully embrace the diverse cultures of our immigrant population. Our concern is about criminal illegal aliens who are falling through the cracks because our sheriff can’t talk to federal immigration agents. On March 27 I introduced a resolution to condemn the state sanctuary law and to direct county counsel to take legal action. Every Orange County supervisor present voted in favor. We currently are reviewing the best ways in which to intervene in the federal government’s lawsuit against California. States cannot simply opt out of federal laws they don’t like. — What were you doing 40 years ago today? My wife Karen and I were getting married at her Catholic church in Chicago. We both worked in downtown Chicago. I had worked for IRS since 1971 and she had worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions since 1970. In today’s dollars, IRS paid me $89,178/year. We used her savings for the down payment to buy 1017 East Harrison in Wheaton and we used the profit from the sale of my one bedroom condo in the Outer Drive East building to buy a new 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale and a new 1978 Chevy Chevette. I soon sold my 1962 Chevy BelAir and I continued to store my 1972 Corvette in my mother’s garage in Crete. I took graduate accounting courses at DePaul’s downtown building and Karen soon started taking courses there toward a bachelor’s degree in finance. Because of Money Magazine’s February 1978 4-page article on us, IRS had disallowed all the graduate business courses that I had taken at Loyola and all the graduate accounting courses that I had taken at DePaul. Eventually, I won a split decision in Tax Court. The judge imposed a new rule that you cannot deduct accounting courses until you are qualified to take the CPA examination. (FROM THE ARTICLE: It wasn’t democracy’s finest hour. On Election Day, the sole Republican candidate for the U.S. House in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District was a Holocaust denier and neo-Nazi. And he got more than 20,000 votes. Ugh. Ideally, Arthur Jones would have received no votes because he deserves no support. But even one vote – his own – would have been enough to win Tuesday’s primary because he ran unopposed. Instead he got 20,458. The Cook County Clerk’s Office reports that 70 percent of suburban voters in the district pulling a Republican ballot checked his name. We blame a lack of situational awareness. Republicans didn’t bother to recruit a legitimate candidate because the district is gerrymandered to elect a Democrat. So Jones waltzed in and now is set to run on their ticket in November against incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski. This embarrassment is on Republicans. Let both parties stay awake during future filing periods to prevent unsavory characters from hijacking their good names. Most voters didn’t intend to support Jones, we’re certain. They voted the party line and automatically filled in the box next to his name. Why research an unopposed candidate? We wish they had paid more attention to news reports.
