bracing for legal marijuana’s impacts – Marie Wilson https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190901/suburban-school-administrators-bracing-for-legal-marijuanas-impacts (FROM THE ARTICLE:
Students won’t be allowed to use marijuana when adult recreational use begins
Jan. 1, but school leaders anticipate legalization bringing a cascade of
effects in the educational realm. The need for prevention education will
increase. The difficulty of determining intoxication among students and staff
members will rise. The use restrictions imposed on employees will need
clarification. And the regulations that come with federal funding could create
conflicts. These are the chief concerns raised by educational leaders across
the suburbs as they start a school year during which recreational marijuana use
by adults 21 and older is set to begin under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax
Act. Elgin Unit District U-46 CEO Tony Sanders raised many of these points in a
paper he wrote for a doctoral degree he is pursuing from Aurora University. He
advises vigilance to prevent increased marijuana prevalence. “Students
already have access, somehow, to illegal marijuana,” Sanders said. “I
think this (law) makes it more open for students to gain access to marijuana,
and I do worry about that.” Vigilance against marijuana in schools could
mean posting signs to remind the public of smoke-free and drug-free
regulations, which U-46 plans to do, Sanders said. Or it could mean using
health class lessons to emphasize the negative implications of marijuana use by
teens, which is in the plans for Glenbard High School District 87, among
others. Whatever districts do to prepare for adult marijuana use, they should
work to create a “culture of nonuse” among students, said Cristina
Cortesi, substance abuse prevention coordinator at Stevenson High School in
Lincolnshire. “Unfortunately, when a substance is legalized, it creates
greater accessibility and it creates greater norms of use,” Cortesi said.
“When policy is not in our favor in terms of preventing substance abuse,
it’s just a harder road ahead.”)

are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share
one that I find quite interesting. It’s at www.gopillinois.com,
and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an
understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself —
DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’
views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad,
including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are
conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a
New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the
Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from,
or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs
(Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you
don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to www.gopillinois.com. But you would be missing a treasure of links
to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who
became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004
has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50
articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least
10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to
more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t
always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP
tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there.
He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information.
He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance
the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too,
including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take
early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his
opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class
action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also
passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than
three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of
interesting information — every day.)

of the skills Wu has honed during his day job—as senior attorney at the U.S.

ordinances, parsing out legalese when amendments to existing language are
proposed, and, at least in one instance, actually drafting an ordinance,” he
said. “At GAO,” Wu explained, “I serve in a quasi-judicial role, adjudicating
bid protests filed with our office. The skillset is very similar to that used
in deciding matters brought before the city council, including fairmindedness,
the ability to absorb large records and ultimately render a decision.” “A firm
belief that process matters” also factors into both jobs. “As companies who
file protests with GAO understand, while we might not necessarily agree with them
in the end, each argument raised is heard and carefully considered,” Wu said.

valuable time to appear before us or submit written matters has to know that

(FROM THE POSTING: Negative campaigning or mudslinging is the process of
deliberate spreading negative information about someone or something to worsen
the public image of the described. Deliberate spreading of such information can
be motivated either by honest desire of the campaigner to warn others against
real dangers or deficiencies of the described, or by the campaigner’s dishonest
ideas on methods of winning in political, business or other spheres of
competition against an honest rival. The public image of an entity can be
defined as reputation, esteem, respect, acceptance of the entity’s appearance,
values and behavior by the general public of a given territory and/or a social
group, possibly within time limits. As target groups of public and their values
differ, so negativity or positivity of a public image is relative; thus, to be
successful, negative campaigning has to take into account current values of the
group it addresses. The degree of strictness in practicing the group’s values
as opposed to its tolerance for violating the norms has also to be taken into
consideration.)

weeks ago, the News-Press asked the community to weigh in on our process of
endorsing political candidates. The question was: To endorse or not to endorse?
The feedback was voluminous and passionate. Thirty-eight people wrote to say we
should stop endorsing candidates in various city, county, state and federal
races and 35 said we should continue. A common theme in most of the responses
was an appreciation for our diligence in vetting the candidates through
questionnaires, background checks and interviews. They wanted the information
to help them decide on whom should get their vote. We agree the most important
part of what we do — and we do it better than most — is going in-depth with the
candidates on the issues. Getting specific answers to and solutions for some of
our most critical issues, like water quality and the environment, affordable
and attainable housing, the mental health and opioid crisis, how to improve
education and build new schools, mean the most to people. That same information
also was vital for us in endorsing candidates.)
