— Why settling for a subpar job right out of college can hurt your career for years – Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz (DIERSEN: After you earned your bachelor’s degree, did you take a job that did not require a bachelor’s degree? I did. In 1970, when I was 21 years old, after I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU, I accepted the only job offer that I got – working for the Firestone Store in Chicago Heights. I was draft bait. Potential employers did not believe that my application for a financial hardship would be granted. Further, employers were under tremendous pressure to hire minorities, females, and veterans. 7 months later, after my application had been approved, my Firestone boss fired me when I told him that I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile. But Oldsmobile withdrew that job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS. IRS offered me the job because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But with student loan bills looming, Villagomez can sense how the need for a paycheck — any paycheck — could suck him into a job that doesn’t take advantage of his education. He has seen cousins and friends abandon ambitions and fall into the rut of low-wage work when life gets in the way. “I’m worried about not following through on my plans,” said Villagomez, 27, who spent five years in the Marine Corps before enrolling at University of Illinois at Chicago, where he majored in economics and minored in biology. “Sometimes it’s easier to get stuck in these other fields.”)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180614/NEWS10/180619938/metra-pays-the-price-for-being-frugal
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With a sticker price of $3 million for a new commuter rail car, the cash-strapped Metra system is trying to upgrade its vintage rolling stock on the cheap with $700,000-a-car gut and rehab jobs at its 49th Street Car Shop on the South Side. There’s a lot to overhaul, because 40 percent of Metra’s existing fleet predates the system’s launch in the 1980s. Some cars still in use, inherited from private railroads that once ran suburban service, date back to the Eisenhower administration.)

On page XII in the report, the IG says the department “identified numerous FBI employees, at all levels of the organization and with no official reason to be in contact with the media, who were nevertheless in frequent contact with reporters.” The IG expressed “profound concerns about the volume and extent of unauthorized media contacts by FBI personnel that we have uncovered our review.” The contact between FBI agents and the media extended to receiving “improperly receiving benefits from reporters, including tickets to sporting events, golfing outings, drinks and meals, and admittance to nonpublic social events.”)

— Activists ask board to make Sangamon ‘gun sanctuary’ county – John Reynolds
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20180612/activists-ask-board-to-make-sangamon-gun-sanctuary-county
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Tonight, I ask you to please consider protecting your constituents and the voters and the taxpayers of Sangamon County,” said Springfield resident Rosanna Pulido. “Please pass a resolution to make Sangamon County a sanctuary for gun owners.” Other Illinois counties, including nearby Christian County, have adopted gun sanctuary resolutions. The terminology comes from so-called sanctuary cities, such as Chicago, that don’t cooperate with aspects of federal immigration enforcement. Speaking before the meeting, Sangamon County Administrator Brian McFadden said the county has an informal policy that it does not weigh in on symbolic measures that are outside its regulatory authority. Even if the county were to pass a gun sanctuary resolution, it would not affect the enforcement of federal, state or local gun laws. . .“This is not a symbolic resolution. It is a defense of the Constitutional principle. It is incumbent on our local elected officials to make sure their constituents’ voices are heard by the state in regards to protecting the Constitution. You took an oath of office to that effect,” Pulido said. Pulido, as well as Springfield residents Tom Shafer and Lynn Wilson, spoke at the end of the county board meeting. Board members did not comment or ask them any questions.)

http://www.pekintimes.com/news/20180612/hranka-tazewell-board-not-funding-auditor-office-properly
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Harris said the auditor’s position by statute can be filled by anybody off the street, and the county wants more experience. “I’m not saying we’ve got bad people, but we want more stability in the job,” said Harris. “We want to know that we have an accounting professional in the job. “We know some of our audits haven’t been completed. The main job is compliance, and some audits just haven’t been completed over the years. It’s not against the person that’s on the job, it’s the knowledge to do the audit. We can’t guarantee consistent qualifications in the job through the process that we have. We would like to bring in talent that can do it, can see it. Anybody can come on the job and learn it, but we want our auditor to have a CIA, Certified Internal Auditor.” The county is not seeking professionals in other elected posts. Hranka said under statute, the sheriff, coroner and others are not required to have experience in the field pertaining to the position they are running for. She said the board allows her only $2,000 for continuing education even though she is required to do 20 hours per year.)

http://www.telegraphherald.com/ap/national/article_2a180d26-6abd-5e63-801b-595d374b1ec0.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lamanta Reese lived much of his gang life in virtual reality, posting videos on YouTube of him and others taunting rivals. He died at age 19 in the real world, bleeding from his head onto a porch on Chicago’s South Side after one of those gang rivals, prosecutors say, shot him 11 times. Another possible factor in his slaying: A smiley-face emoji Reese posted that the suspected gunman may have interpreted as a slight about his mom. Gangs’ embrace of social media to goad foes or conceal drug dealing in emoji-laden text is the biggest change in how gangs operate compared with 10 years ago, according to new law enforcement data provided exclusively to The Associated Press ahead of its release Tuesday by the Chicago Crime Commission. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other sites have radically altered gang culture in Chicago. They are having a similar influence on gangs nationwide. These days, there is nearly always a link between an outbreak of gang violence and something online, said Rodney Phillips, a gang-conflict mediator working in the low-income Englewood neighborhood where Reese lived and died. When he learns simmering tensions have spilled into violence, he no longer goes first to the streets. “I Google it,” Phillips said. “I look on YouTube and Facebook. Today, that’s how you follow the trail of a conflict.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Pritzker campaign wasted no time hanging President Donald Trump around Gov. Bruce Rauner’s neck on Tuesday, just hours after the governor made a rare positive statement about the Trump White House. He did it, of course, without saying the president’s name. “I am very proud of what’s been going on in the federal government, Congress, and the White House,” Rauner said at a Downstate stop. Rauner is well aware that if he hopes to have any chance in November, he needs to reach out to the Republican base in southern Illinois, which is solid Trump country. Look no further than Rep. Mark Sanford’s loss last night, after Trump tweeted support for Sanford’s opponent, state Rep. Katie Arrington, as evidence of what can happen to Republicans who dump on Trump.)

DAILY SIGNAL
— Trump Executive Orders Are Surprisingly Popular With Federal Employees – John York (DIERSEN: The Democrats who run the federal government use Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. My Democrat superiors in the federal government acted like their employees who were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran wanted them to get rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. Assessing job performance is extremely subjective. The Democrats who run the federal government use that subjectivity to get rid of federal employee who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who they did not promote to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
https://www.dailysignal.com/2018/06/12/trump-executive-orders-are-surprisingly-popular-with-federal-employees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When President Donald Trump recently issued three executive orders that made it easier to fire poorly performing government employees, the backlash from public-sector unions was fierce. Union leaders did not like it—one called it an “assault on federal employees.” But a recent poll shows a slight majority of government workers—51 percent—supports the administration’s efforts. Moreover, only 24 percent of federal employees oppose the recent executive orders and another quarter are unsure. The level of support among federal workers for executive orders that will make it easier to fire them is surprising, but only at first glance. In fact, Trump’s executive orders represent modest reforms that will not affect the vast majority of employees and, in fact, likely will improve their working conditions. For instance, one of the new executive orders imposes a 30-day limit on the time an agency can give an employee to improve his poor performance before being fired. When a federal manager determines that an employee is not up to the job, he must present that employee with a performance improvement plan as a last-ditch effort to turn his performance around. Prior to the president’s executive order, agencies set the length of this grace period, which stretched to 120 days in some cases. The new executive order also gives managers more freedom to decide how to punish misconduct. Prior to Trump’s executive orders, managers were ordinarily bound to progress through lesser disciplinary steps from verbal warning and written notices to suspensions, demotions, and removal from the civil service. Now, managers are free to choose a punishment that fits the crime. Some federal employees no doubt take advantage of their insulation from accountability, but most civil servants are hard-working and dedicated—a fact attested to by the 70 percent customer satisfaction rate among those who receive some federal service. These diligent workers must pick up the slack for those who do not do their share, then are sometimes denied opportunities for advancement by the dead weight above them. And, as anyone who has worked in an office environment knows, unmotivated and unruly co-workers can take a heavy toll on morale. So, although a few bad apples may prefer to keep the status quo, it is not surprising most federal employees welcome these provisions of the president’s executive orders.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There’s a lot of debate about the differences in working conditions that public-sector and private-sector workers face. Some private-sector workers who have seen many of their employee benefits deteriorate or disappear entirely over the years believe their public-sector counterparts get benefit packages that are too expensive for taxpayers to maintain. Public-sector employees can point to base salaries that have historically often been lower than what they could make in the private sector as a justification for additional benefits to make up the difference.)

https://communityjournal.net/3-surprises-to-watch-out-for-when-paying-for-long-term-care/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than 70 percent of Americans over the age of 65 will need long-term health care services, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Yet, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, only 13 percent of those who received professional home health care had long-term insurance policies, which can protect seniors from high out-of-pocket costs. “There is a wide gap of people without long-term care insurance (LTCI), and some of the alternatives carry little-known laws and legal liabilities that can pose a problem to the care recipient and their family, says CHRIS ORESTIS, Executive Vice President of GWG Life (www.gwglife.com ) and author of the books Help on the Way and A Survival Guide to Aging. “The growing long-term care funding crisis has brought lawsuits and mandated claw-back actions against families in attempts to recover monies spent on long-term care,” Orestis says. “There is a growing need for consumers to consider all their available financial options to fund long-term care, and that can include selling a life insurance policy.” “Often the weight for long-term care falls on the family, and they need to avoid a financial surprise that can come late in life for their loved ones.”)

And they fear that behemoths like AT&T might someday prioritize their own TV shows and other content over rivals’. Internet service providers, or ISPs, deny that they would engage in such a practice — yet consumer watchdogs worry that consumers would have little legal recourse if they did. “I think this could be a one-two punch to consumers and online competition,” said Gene Kimmelman, the president of Public Knowledge, a Washington, D.C.-based public interest group. “The combination of no net neutrality and video consolidation creates new bottlenecks that empower the traditional media industry to raise prices and limit online competition.”)

Several high-profile aides, including John F. Kelly, the president’s chief of staff, and Joe Hagin, a deputy of Mr. Kelly’s, are said to be thinking about how much longer they can stay. Last week, Mr. Kelly told visiting senators that the White House was “a miserable place to work,” according to a person with direct knowledge of the comment. The turnover, which is expected to become an exodus after the November elections, does not worry the president, several people close to him said. He has grown comfortable with removing any barriers that might challenge him — including, in some cases, people who have the wrong chemistry or too frequently say no to him.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— What to Consider Before You Change Your Residence Because of the New Tax Law Limits on deductions for state and local taxes have created a greater incentive for taxpayers living in high-tax states – Tom Herman (DIERSEN: Roskam should increase the $10,000 SALT cap to $20,000 for married filing jointly.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/what-to-consider-before-you-change-your-residence-because-of-the-new-tax-law-1528682701
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For some people, saving taxes under the new law could be a moving experience. Among the biggest changes is a provision limiting deductions for state and local taxes to $10,000 a year ($5,000 for a married person filing a separate return), starting this year and scheduled to expire at the end of 2025. Also, the standard deduction amounts rose sharply. These changes have created a greater incentive for many taxpayers living in high-tax areas, including New York City, California, New Jersey and Connecticut, to consider becoming tax refugees. This includes upper-income taxpayers who have more than one home and want to claim a home in a lower-tax area as the one that counts for tax purposes. It also includes some taxpayers who are considering fleeing entirely from a high-tax area.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Our next guest is Republican Congressman Peter Roskam, who represents an Illinois district near Chicago. Welcome to the program. PETER ROSKAM: Thank you for having me on. SHAPIRO: You’ve supported targeted measures on some steel imports like those from China. What makes these different? ROSKAM: What makes these different is these are going after our allies with whom we really have no conflict. And I think that this will have an adverse impact on small manufacturers in my constituency that I’ve heard directly from – and not just the manufacturers but obviously their employees and clearly American consumers. I think the smarter move is for us to focus our time and energy on China, which – there’s all kinds of trade infractions. And this is not well-placed resources in a fight that we really shouldn’t be having right now. SHAPIRO: President Trump doesn’t appear to be backing down. Do you think it’s now the role of Congress to stop him through legislation? ROSKAM: So the challenge with stopping the president through legislation obviously is the president would have to sign the bill. So said another way, these original trade structures were put in place to give presidents authorities to ease up on trade tariffs and to make it easier for commerce to pass between countries. It was not necessarily contemplated that you’d have a president that was tougher on a country than Congress was. So I think we’re very much in the persuasion mode. I had a meeting today along with some others with Secretary Ross. I’m heading into a meeting with Ambassador Lighthizer, giving voice to these concerns. And I think when push comes to shove, one of the voices that’s going to have a disproportionately significant impact is American agriculture because they’re ashen-faced at the idea of getting into a trade war.)

https://www.wthr.com/article/iowa-gop-zero-in-on-wealth-of-democratic-governor-candidate

(FROM THE ARTICLE: For a Republican Party that celebrates capitalism and the American dream of building wealth, the GOP’s initial line of attack against the new Iowa Democratic nominee for governor appears a bit out of character. Fred Hubbell, a former life insurance executive whose family wealth dates back to the mid-1800s, won the Democratic nomination Tuesday and will face Gov. Kim Reynolds in November. Almost immediately, Reynolds and party leaders questioned how voters could trust a candidate who was born rich and later served in leadership roles at several companies. Hubbell’s family businesses in Des Moines include ties to real estate and insurance. “The issue isn’t that Fred Hubbell has been rich his entire life, it’s that he has no idea what it’s like not to be,” said Reynolds during her election night speech. “He has no idea what it’s like to balance a family checkbook or to make the tough decisions most of us make each and every day when we’re trying to make ends meet.” Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann has chimed in by repeatedly referring to Hubbell, 67, as “Prince Frederick.” On election night, the party posted a photo-shopped image of Hubbell on its Facebook page as the Monopoly board game mascot, with a top hat, monocle and bags of money surrounding him. Never mind that Reynolds and Iowa GOP party leaders are big supporters of President Donald Trump, a rich businessman who surrounds himself with conspicuous wealth at his lavish properties such as Mar-a-Lago. In the Iowa governor’s race between a woman of modest means and a man who donated nearly $3 million of his own money toward his primary race, the GOP so far is zeroing in on personal wealth. It’s a strategy tried before as more rich candidates run for office from both parties, many of them also funneling millions of dollars to fund their own campaigns. In neighboring Illinois, for example, Democrat J.B. Pritzker, a billionaire member of the family that founded Hyatt hotels, has put more than $100 million of his own money into his bid to unseat Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, a wealthy former private equity investor. When he won in 2014, Rauner was accused of trying to buy the election.)

Being forced to take early retirement is a major adverse employment action. If you have been forced to take early retirement, you know how devastating it is. Prior to that, they gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)

Rauner, who won the primary by a scant 22,000-vote margin, faced opposition stirred up from “grassroots anger over [his] more liberal positions,” according to a May 19 piece in the State Journal-Register. However, that same report said that Tim Schneider, a member of Rauner’s camp, had won another term as chairman of the Illinois GOP, an indication that the party’s cracks—if there were any—are healing. “It’s important to note, however, that robust competition and debate is a cornerstone of our party’s principles,” Foss-Eggemann stated. “So I would not characterize a race as ‘division.’” But with a tough battle against Pritzker ahead, Foss-Eggemann is realistic about what it may take to keep the governor’s office in the GOP column. “We need to run with the opportunity and make the most of what we have,” she said. “We must all raise our game to make everyone feel welcome and do even more to engage and train grassroots volunteers. If we do these things, we win.”)

My age cohort was in school during the 1940s. Baby boomers approaching their 70s were in school during the 1950s and early ’60s. Try this question to any one of those 50 million Americans who are 65 or older: Do you recall any discussions about the need to hire armed guards to protect students and teachers against school shootings? Do you remember school policemen patrolling the hallways? How many students were shot to death during the time you were in school? For me and those other Americans 65 or older, when we were in school, a conversation about hiring armed guards and having police patrol hallways would have been seen as lunacy. There was no reason.)

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/white-house/trumps-war-on-the-washington-bureaucracy
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bill Valdez fired two people during his 20 years as a manager in the federal workforce. One went quietly after an instance of undisputed misconduct. The other, accused of doing almost no work, refused to leave and used entrenched civil service protections to stay on the federal payroll for another eight years, claiming discrimination, disability, and unfair treatment. Such long goodbyes have proved so arduous and frustrating that many managers just give up, essentially resigning their ability to manage their staff. But they are about to become much less common, as President Trump signed three executive orders last month gutting rules that allow bad workers to prevent legitimate firings, and ending lucrative perks for the labor unions that helped put them in place. . .Once the new employee discipline procedures are implemented, “you give someone notice that their performance is unsatisfactory, and if they do not respond, you can remove them within 30 days,” he added. In the case of the employee who survived Valdez’s attempt at firing for eight years, he recalled, “it got conflated with other issues that delayed the dismissal.” “A federal employee who is removed from public service for performance issues has a right to appeal not only the performance issues but the other issues he or she believes are associated with that … even to federal courts,” he said. “What this [new] process does is say if you’re removed from federal service for poor performance, and if you wish to adjudicate this, go ahead, but you’re not going to do this while you’re put on administrative leave.” “What tends to happen is most appeals are ruled in the agency’s favor,” Valdez added, particularly from the Merit Systems Protection Board. . .The union leader says the reforms are a step toward making federal workers “at will” employees, allowing for political considerations in hiring and firing decisions. “Everyone knows President Trump has no respect for the rule of law and this is just the latest case,” Cox added. The White House official who worked on the orders says this is false, and that the federal workforce isn’t moving to at-will employment. But staff must be liable to firing for cause, either poor performance or misconduct.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Few federal employees file formal complaints with their agency in response to sexual harassment and even fewer believe that their agency took corrective action against a harasser, according to a recent Merit Systems Protection Board Survey. “Employees may conclude that the risks of reporting harassment outweigh any potential personal or organizational benefits, and decide not to use agency procedures for addressing sexual harassment and holding the harasser(s) accountable for their misconduct,” the report said. Only 11 percent of employees filed a formal complaint of the harassment, with only eight percent believing that their harasser received punishment. (FROM THE ARTICLE: On June 2, Allsup posted a picture of a certificate on Facebook. “As of today I am officially an elected official in the state of Washington and Republican party,” he wrote. “Cool!” The piece of paper certified that Allsup was now a precinct committee officer for the Whitman County, Washington Republican Party. Allsup’s certificate declares that he was awarded the post after his candidacy remained uncontested for four days. The county’s auditor confirmed the certificate’s authenticity to The Daily Beast. Allsup’s post is a small one on its face, but it’s influential. “If you want to take over a political party in this state, the best thing to do is to start at the PCO level and get a whole bunch of people who agree with your views elected as PCOs,” Hugh Spitzer, a professor of law at the University of Washington, told The Daily Beast.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A proposed class action lawsuit alleging Facebook’s ad placement tools facilitate discrimination against older job-seekers has been expanded to identify additional companies, further widening the latest front in claims that candidates are being filtered out by gender, geography, race and age. “When Facebook’s own algorithm disproportionately directs ads to younger workers at the exclusion of older workers, Facebook and the advertisers who are using Facebook as an agent to send their advertisements are engaging in disparate treatment,” a communications union alleged in the amended complaint- citing a legal test for employment discrimination-filed Tuesday in San Francisco federal court. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Today I know why: Recent research in economics, psychology and neuroscience shows that aging has an independent effect on life satisfaction, separate from factors such as health, wealth and other life circumstances. In other words, time is not an emotionally neutral backdrop. Instead, its effect on happiness is U-shaped: Other things being equal, people’s life satisfaction tends to decline from their early 20s until midlife, then turns around at about age 50. Armed with this knowledge, I often wish I could go back and warn the pre-40 me of what was coming. I first started to notice the onset of nagging dissatisfaction around my 40th birthday; I figured it would pass. But counting my blessings, as I often did, only deepened my funk. As my 40s went on, the perplexing feelings of restlessness and regret deepened. At 45, I attained the highest prize in my profession, yet not even that success hushed the inner critics saying I had wasted my life. By my late 40s, I painfully concluded that dissatisfaction and ingratitude were my new normal.)

BREITBART
— Antonio Villaraigosa-Supporting Group Sends Anti-John Cox Mailers to Republican Voters – Joel B. Pollak (DIERSEN: Have you ever ran for a government or a political office? I give credit to Republicans who run for government and/or political offices. Cox and I served together on the Illinois Center Right Coalition (ICRC) Steering Committee (SC). I have never run for a government office, but I did successfully run a) for the Association of Government Accountants Chicago Chapter Executive Committee 1983-1995, b) for Republican Precinct Committeeman every 2 years starting in 2000, c) for American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) Midwest Chapter board of directors 2001-2003, d) ICRC SC 2003-2006, and e) TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman 2005-2011. I ran for the open Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) Treasurer position in 2004. Back then, as it continues today, MTRCC members who reject planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform, who blame me for all defeats that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000, who focus on destroying those who they cannot manipulate/dominate, and/or who are operatives or dupes for those who I have sued went negative big time and got all but 13 MTRCC members to vote against me. They stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, MTRCC webmaster, ICRC SC member, AAPC Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc.)
http://www.breitbart.com/2018-elections/2018/05/27/antonio-villaraigosa-supporting-group-sends-anti-john-cox-mailers-to-republican-voters/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What is surprising is that the mailers are attacking Cox from the right, echoing attacks that have been launched by Cox’s main Republican rival, Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach). The mailers refer to Cox as a “Democratic Activist” and a “Chicago Liberal,” and note that he did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016. (Trump has since endorsed Cox for governor). One mailer is actually designed to look like it comes from Travis Allen. There is an attractive photograph of Allen and his family next to a military aircraft, plus a list of Republican endorsements for Allen. It is only once readers see the fine print of who paid for the ads that the truth becomes clear: the mailers are “Paid for by Families & Teachers for Antonio Villaraigosa for Governor 2018, sponsored by California Charter Schools Association Advocates,” groups that are backing the Democrat. What looks like Republican mailers are actually propaganda placed by Democrats in an attempt to split the Republican vote and create an opening for Villaraigosa to qualify for the general election. Many of the claims by the group against Cox were debunked by the Sacramento Bee: “John Cox did lose 13 campaigns before running for governor, but he isn’t a secret Democrat.” These sorts of tricks are commonplace — and legal — in California, where all is fair in the “jungle” primary.)

To keep their jobs and to get promoted, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government focused on getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/26/opinion/sunday/college-majors-liberal-arts.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Last Sunday The Chronicle of Higher Education published a special report that delved into this debate. One of the stories described what was happening at the flagship campus of the University of Illinois and at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., casting these developments as different harbingers for higher education. Illinois is pairing certain majors in the liberal arts — for example, anthropology and linguistics — with computer science. Assumption is doing away with a host of traditional majors in favor of new ones geared to practical skills. Goodbye, art history, geography and, yes, classics. Hello, data analytics, actuarial science and concentrations in physical and occupational therapy.)

http://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article211871824.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s true that Cox that has repeatedly and unsuccessfully tried to break into politics. But the ad gives an inflated sense that he has Democratic leanings. Cox, who got his start as an attorney in Illinois, moved to California in 2011. He no longer practices law, though still has an active license in Illinois. He grew up in a Democratic family in Chicago and ran, at the age of 20, to be a delegate for the 1976 Democratic convention. It was the first in a string of races he would lose. Cox has said he was drawn to the GOP in the 1980s by President Ronald Reagan. He has pursued half a dozen failed campaigns for office as a Republican, including for Congress in 2000, U.S. Senate in 2002 and 2004, Cook County Record of Deeds in 2004, Illinois Republican Party chairman in 2005 and U.S. president in 2008.)
