(FROM THE ARTICLE: The usually sedate Illinois Tollway board’s monthly meeting erupted in controversy on Thursday, when the agency’s executive director accused a board member of threatening her. Board member Joseph Gomez, an appointee of Gov. Bruce Rauner and the senior vice president of Byline Bank, told the board that Tollway Executive Director Liz Gorman had refused to meet with him one-on-one before the meeting. Gorman told the board that she refused the meeting because of threats Gomez had made against her. “I feel uncomfortable and very threatened,” Gorman said. She said she had been willing to meet with Gomez with someone else present, but Gomez declined. The dispute between Gomez and Gorman comes at a time of increased scrutiny of Tollway operations. On Tuesday, members of the state Senate Transportation Committee questioned Tollway officials about contracts awarded to firms with political connections or ties to the agency. After Thursday’s meeting, Gorman told reporters the threats were “verbal” but declined to elaborate further, telling reporters they could request information under the Freedom of Information Act. Gomez denied Gorman’s charge and said he had not spoken to Gorman before Thursday morning. A former Republican Cook County commissioner, Gorman was named executive director in February. “I don’t know what she’s talking about,” Gomez told reporters after the meeting, noting that he had voted to approve her appointment.)

— MARCH 9, 2018 FLASHBACK: Reading Your Corvette After a Long Storage – James Berry (DIERSEN: After not starting it since 2009, my 1972 Chevy Corvette, with only 5,081 miles on it, is at D & M Corvette in Downers Grove. My excuse for not starting the car and not driving it each summer is my spending 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out. In addition, since 2005, I have had a 2005 Corvette to drive; since 2012, a 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Max to drive; and since 2016, a 2016 Ford Mustang to drive. The carburetor is being rebuilt today. So far, D & M has replaced the car’s 5 tires with correct Firestone Wide Oval White Letter replica tires from Coker Tire, replaced all four calipers, replaced the master brake cylinder and fuel pump, fixed a fuel leak, fixed a passenger door latch problem, installed a new battery, changed the oil and filter, etc. D & M has not yet checked A/C and or taken it on a test drive. After investing all this money in the car, I am increasing its stated value insurance from $30,000 to $35,000. From now on, I will start and drive the car at least once each summer. The car is a Steel Cities Gray Coupe with the base 350 engine, automatic, power steering, A/C, black leather seats, AM/FM stereo radio, and heavy duty battery. The VIN is 1Z37K2S503860. I ordered the car in August of 1971 after my 1969 Dodge Charger SE was stolen in Chicago. I paid for the car with the $2,500 insurance settlement, $500 from my savings, and a $3,000 from a car loan. I took delivery on October 14, 1971. I paid the car loan off with money that I earned working for IRS full-time and working for Firestone Stores part-time. I stored the car in my mother’s garage in Crete 1971-1984 and in my attached, insulated, and heated garage in Wheaton since then, and since 1995, on a hydraulic lift. Money Magazine’s February 1978 “one person’s finances” article on me mentioned the car and included a picture of the car with me in it.)

Americans live such different lives that what we buy, do or watch can be used to predict our politics, race, income, education and gender – sometimes with more than 90 percent accuracy. It turns out that people are separated not just by gun ownership, religion and their beliefs on affirmative action – but also by English muffins, flashlights and mustard. To prove it, University of Chicago economists Marianne Bertrand and Emir Kamenica taught machines to guess a person’s income, political ideology, race, education and gender based on either their media habits, their consumer behavior, their social and political beliefs, and even how they spent their time. Their results were released in a new working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research. The duo trained their algorithms to detect patterns in decades of responses to three long-running surveys, each with between 669 and 22,093 responses per year. The surveys were tuned and filtered to be consistent over time, which allowed Bertrand and Kamenica to measure how America’s cultural divides have evolved. . .But others are revelatory: White people and black people are almost as different in their spending habits as rich people and poor people are, for example. Differences in social attitudes between liberals and conservatives have been widened over time, Bertrand and Kamenica found. The gap in social attitudes between whites and nonwhites has fallen slightly, but the difference in consumer behavior between races has grown.)

Everywhere else, committeepersons are elected in their precincts — and it’s not easy convincing people to run for that office, particularly in overwhelmingly Republican areas. However, those county chairs can fill vacancies, and the appointed committeepersons don’t have to live in the precincts they represent, so a big push is on to get counties to a minimum level of 75 percent coverage. Some local party officials have also been told that the million-dollar contribution from Pritzker is just the first round. More party-building money is coming. By contrast, as of last week Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign had given a total of about $33,000 divided between nine county and township Republican organizations since the March primary. The Illinois Republican Party chipped in another $25,000 during the same time period for a handful of county organizations. J.B. Lauzen then accused the board members who rejected his payment of collecting a $25,000 annual paycheck without performing any meaningful public service to justify it. The drama marked the latest sign of an increasingly fractured relationship Lauzen has with many board members. Less than a week ago, he spoke with confidence about a second vote approving his reimbursement request. That vote became necessary after an opinion from State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Lauzen cast an improper vote to break a 10-10 tie on the reimbursement last month. Lauzen began his speech Tuesday with a highlight reel of accomplishments during his tenure. Those include extending a property tax levy freeze in place since the year before he took office through the 2016 budget year. Given those results, Lauzen said, he expected to be “given even more latitude to produce even more good.” Instead, the reimbursement denial comes as more “destructive nitpicking” to stand in the way of progress, Lauzen said. Turning over his plans to create new, nontax income for the county with a waste-to-fuel facility, expansion of the county’s fiber optic network leasing, and promoting the use of county infrastructure for cellphone amplification has gone nowhere, he said. “I would ask you to examine your public service you produced for your $25,000 salary,” Lauzen said. “What positive contribution are you making? (FROM THE ARTICLE: A letter which demands that Maine Township Republican Committeeman Char Foss-Eggemann of Park Ridge call for the resignation of Township Trustee Dave Carrabotta because of allegations that he inappropriately touched fellow Trustee Kim Jones, has not yet been sent to Eggemann. However, according to some people knowledgeable about the letter, it will soon be mailed to the committeeman as well as Cook County Republican Party leader Sean Morrison, state GOP leader Tim Schneider, and others. Meanwhile, an investigation into the sexual harassment claims by Jones, launched by the town board after May 22 when the charges first surfaced, will take another week and a half to complete, said township Supervisor Laura Morask. She indicated that one more person has to be interviewed by the lawyer assigned to perform the probe. Morask would not comment further. The letter insisting that Eggemann act on the matter was prompted in part by some Republicans demanding that House Speaker Mike Madigan step down because of harassment and bullying complaints leveled against several Democrats. Marilyn Smolenski, Republican candidate who’s running against incumbent Democrat Marty Moylan in the November General Election, has been one of those voices demanding Madigan’s resignation. She has been highly critical of Moylan for not standing up to Madigan by demanding that he resign. Eggemann is a strong supporter of Smolenski, who lives in Park Ridge. Moylan recently blasted Smolenski for backing “one of the biggest perverts in the U.S., Trump.” Added Moylan, “He’s one of the biggest pigs in the U.S. I’m not silent. Tell that Trump backing pistol packing Trump supporter that I back women’s rights and I voted for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).” Smolenski owns a company that sells pistol holders for women. On the advice of the township attorney, Jones confronted Carrabotta with her accusations of inappropriately touching her backside on May 22. Carrabotta flatly denied the allegations and demanded an immediate closed door meeting where the issue could be discussed. Jones accuses Carrabotta of touching her on three separate occasions during township events in late 2017 and 2018. According to people familiar with the letter, it’s believed that at least 10 local Republican women will sign it by the time it is mailed to Eggemann. Among the words used in the letter are “outrageous” and “disturbing.” It also says that Jones has a solid reputation in the community and was slated by committeeman Eggemann to run for the township position. Carrabotta has told the Journal & Topics that the matter is “confidential”. In a statement released yesterday (Tuesday) by State Republican chairman Tim Schneider, he said, “The Illinois Republican Party strongly believes that sexual harassment has no place in any workplace, public or private, and that allegations must be investigated swiftly by independent parties. If the allegations against the Maine Township trustee are true, he has violated the public’s trust and should step down. Until then, the investigation involving the allegations should proceed.”)
