I went on a) to earn a master’s degree in accounting in 1980 and b) to pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt and to become a licensed CPA in 1981. But by then, my employer, GAO, and the accounting profession considered me to be too old to have a successful career in accounting.
