WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Is It Time for Pope Francis to Resign? If an archbishop’s explosive claims are vindicated, this papacy must end. – Robert P. George

— Coming Soon to Facebook: Lots of Extreme Political Ads Campaign strategists say the social-media giant’s advertising platform rewards extreme messaging – Georgia Wells and Deepa Seetharaman (DIERSEN: Of course, you never have, and you never will see any kind of paid advertising in GOPUSA emails or on www.gopillinois.com. But if I did take money for such advertising, which activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. would take out ads in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails and on www.gopillinois.com? What would they would they promote with their advertising?)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/coming-soon-to-facebook-lots-of-extreme-political-ads-1535707802
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Campaign strategists are gearing up to flood Facebook with inflammatory and polarizing ads heading into the midterm elections, saying its advertising platform rewards extreme messaging more than other venues. Such tactics often backfire, partly because extreme ads can be hidden by those who find them disagreeable, Facebook Inc. said. The disconnect highlights the social network’s often-controversial role as a political tool, where Facebook wants to be viewed as a promoter of healthy debate while some believe its platform contributes to divisive civic discourse. Although Facebook didn’t start the trend toward more inflammatory political ads, many candidates and consultants working on midterm campaigns said its cost structure and ability to target narrow slices of voters makes it a uniquely effective tool for motivating people to act in support of a cause or a candidate. “You’re not trying to persuade anybody on Facebook,” said Jeff Roe, whose political-consulting firm Axiom Strategies is one of the biggest buyers of political advertising, largely on behalf of Republican candidates. “You’re trying to reach a different part of people’s brains.”)

— Your Kids Could Lower Your Tax Bill Like Never Before There’s a new tax break for many parents, but it ends when college expenses are approaching – Laura Saunders (DIERSEN: I should write a book about my GAO superiors who hinted/implied/argued/shouted the most that they punished me because my wife and I gave up trying to have children, because we did not adopt, and because we did not become foster parents. However, that was a pretext. In 1989, they pulled out all the stops to get rid of me. They threw me off audits of IRS which were always in-town, assigned me to a nasty 6-month out-of-town audit, gave me unfair performance expectations, and gave me an unfair performance appraisal. The real reason why they did the aforesaid was that in 1988, I had become an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged them with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. Because of the aforesaid, in 1989, I asked Henry Hyde to come to my defense.)

— Fixing ageism and rethinking retirement – Swapna Venugopal Ramaswamy (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes promote age discrimination a) to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.)
https://www.lohud.com/story/news/2018/08/29/sell-date-employees-ageism-and-rethinking-retirement/1086814002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ageism is widespread and is termed “an insidious practice which has harmful effects on the health of older adults,” by the World Health Organization. Political commentator Bill Maher famously called it the “last acceptable prejudice in America.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg once publicly noted: “Young people are just smarter.” With 10,000 Baby Boomers reaching 65 every day — a trend which began in 2011 and is set to continue until 2029 — it is past the time to have a conversation around attitudes toward retirement. After all, since the time Social Security set the retirement eligibility age at 65 in 1936, life expectancy at birth has gone up by 20 years. . .Age discrimination occurs when an employer treats an applicant or employee less favorably because of his or her age, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. . .Ageism is hard to prove Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, which protects individuals who are over the age of 40 from discrimination in employment. Half a century later, age discrimination in the workplace remains notoriously hard to prove. Of the 18,376 cases filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2017, only 2.2 percent were found to have a “reasonable cause.” . . . 5 Signs of Age Discrimination (Source: AARP) According to the AARP, there are signs older workers can watch out for: Older workers are being fired or offered buyouts, and younger ones are being hired. The most common term for this is “culture fit.” You are reassigned to unpleasant duties. You start hearing tacky comments about your age. You stop getting raises. Your performance reviews tank.)

— Google’s new tools help vets to find better jobs – Mike Snider (DIERSEN: GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified veteran who would take the job. IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified veteran who would take the job. The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified veteran who would take the job. That says a lot about how bad the jobs were that I had in the federal government.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new state law requires that schools provide a lunch to all students, regardless of their ability to pay. Area school officials say that just underscores what they’ve already been doing – but they appreciate the emphasis it puts on nutrition. The lunches are reimbursable with federal funds. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the bill into law this week. It provides that a school may not publicly identify or stigmatize a student who cannot pay for a lunch or who owes money on their account balance.)

If I had been protected, my Democrat GAO superiors would NOT have forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, given me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, failed/refused to promote me beyond GS-13, gotten rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors would NOT have failed/refused to promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, gotten rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors would NOT have forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/08/29/john-coxs-claim-that-he-was-raised-by-single-mother-south-side-chicago/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s where the story gets fuzzy. Cox frequently says he “grew up” with a single mother, struggling on the South Side of Chicago. But records show that’s not the case. His mother married a third time, to a Post Office supervisor named Thomas Cox, on May 23, 1959, according to the marriage license, which said the ceremony was performed by a minister. In other words, John Cox was not yet 4 years old when his mother was no longer single. She remarried less than 3½ years after Cox’s father left her. . .Cox’s mother was a librarian at Calumet High School on the South Side, which had a student population that was almost exclusively African American. Cox graduated from the local high school, H.L. Richards in Oak Lawn, which according to his senior-year yearbook was almost all white. . .When we asked the Cox campaign to explain these discrepancies, officials responded with a statement from Cox that he was largely raised by his mother and that his stepfather was absent and abusive. . .Cox’s older brother has died, and his other siblings did not respond to requests for comment.)

The study’s findings represent a significant one-year loss of 4 percentage points in buying power, with the loss increasing from 30% to 34% from January 2017 to January 2018. According to the study, the loss occurred even though beneficiaries received a 2% annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2018. (FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s possible to trace the divergent fortunes of the Republican and Democratic parties in Illinois by looking at the voting histories of two counties: DuPage, in the suburbs of Chicago, and Williamson, in Southern Illinois coal country. DuPage was once a bulwark of the Illinois Republican Party, having supported its presidential candidates since the days of Abraham Lincoln. After World War II, DuPage’s villages burgeoned with middle-class homeowners who had fled Chicago’s corrupt political machine, and considered Republicans the party of good government and fiscal responsibility. . .How times have changed. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won Illinois by an even larger margin than her husband, but she won only 12 counties, most of them in the Chicago area. She won DuPage County 53%-38%, and lost Williamson County 67%-28%.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that one should introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility in Russia for dismissing employees of pre-retirement age. “I deem it necessary to introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility for employers for dismissing workers of pre-retirement age, as well as for refusing to hire citizens for work because of their age,” Putin said in a televised address to the nation in connection with the widely discussed pension reform in Russia. One should envisage such responsibility within in the framework of additional guarantees that will protect interests of older citizens on the labor market. Today, the retirement age in Russia is 60 years for men and 55 years for women. This retirement age was introduced during the 1930s. The need to raise the retirement age in Russia has been discussed for a long time already due to the increased life expectancy and the inability to provide a decent pension while the number of employed individuals in the country is decreasing, and the number of pensioners is growing. In most countries of the world, the retirement age is 60-65 years.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DISGUSTING, TRAGIC: POT PUSHERS ARE OVERJOYED: Rauner set to sign medical marijuana expansion bill allowing drug as painkiller alternative – Robert McCoppin
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-medical-marijuana-opioids-illinois-expansion-20180827-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In general, Rauner has opposed expanding the medical marijuana program, but a recent poll showing Pritzker with a large lead may have put pressure on him to support the politically popular measure. In addition, Rauner recently approved other measures requiring insurance coverage for opioid abuse and continuing education for doctors about opioid prescriptions. Kevin Sabet, president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, opposes the expansion of medical marijuana, warning that it could lead to more addiction, more drivers who are under the influence and more users suffering from the drug’s harmful effects on attention, memory, decision-making and brain development. “From a scientific perspective, it makes no sense,” Sabet said. “The most comprehensive study on the issue was just published in The Lancet and found marijuana didn’t help with pain, nor did it reduce opioid use. “From a political perspective,” Sabet added, “it likely signals he feels pressure from J.B. Pritzker, who has welcomed pot with open arms.” But in states that have legalized medical marijuana, some studies have shown a decrease in opioid prescriptions and in opioid-related overdose deaths. Cannabis remains illegal under federal law.)

DAILY HERALD
— Tollway board sees nothing wrong with dubious hiring – Editorial (DIERSEN: Does the Daily Herald see reasons for skepticism a) after my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) after my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) after my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968? Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

— Thousands of Amazon workers receive food stamps. Now Sen. Bernie Sanders wants Amazon to pay up. – Abha Bhattarai
https://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180824/thousands-of-amazon-workers-receive-food-stamps-now-sen-bernie-sanders-wants-amazon-to-pay-up
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “While Mr. Bezos is the most egregious example, the Walton family of Walmart and many other billionaire-owned profitable corporations also enrich themselves off taxpayer assistance while paying their workers poverty-level wages,” Sanders said. Representatives for Walmart did not respond to requests for comment. Bezos, who founded Amazon in 1994, has seen his net worth steadily climb in recent months as the stock market hits record highs. He is currently worth $157 billion, up from $99 billion a year ago, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The median Amazon worker, meanwhile, was paid $28,446 last year, according to company filings. (The federal poverty level for a family of four is currently $24,600.) Etches, of Amazon, said the company had created more than 130,000 new jobs “with highly competitive pay and full benefits” in the last year. She added that the average hourly wage for full-time workers in U.S. warehouses is more than $15 an hour, when stock and incentive bonuses are factored in. “We encourage anyone to compare our median pay and benefits to other retailers,” Etches said. The company did not say how many of its workers are part-time, but said that it hires thousands of temporary workers during peak holiday times. Amazon reported profit of $3.03 billion last year, as sales climbed 31 percent to $178 billion.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Any consultant would say you’ve got to take the other guy down. It may be too late for him to project any sense of why the next four years would be any different than the last four years. That’s the question,” Axelrod said. “If he were to come back under these conditions, it would be one of the greatest political rehabilitation stories in Illinois history,” said Axelrod, who expects Rauner “to run brutal negative ads and hope he can knock Pritzker down to the point to pass him.” Axelrod said Rauner’s favorability numbers also need to rise in order for him to get out of his funk. The poll shows voters have a negative opinion of him by a 2-to-1 margin. Those numbers seem “almost impossible to surmount,” said Axelrod. “But impossible things happen in politics.” Told of Axelrod’s comments, Rauner spokesman Alex Browning responded, “Pundits and public polling were wrong about Bruce Rauner in 2014 and they’ll be wrong again in 2018. With Illinois’ future on the line, voters care about lowering taxes and fighting corruption, not polling and prop bets.”)

NEW YORK TIMES
— Singapore Says ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Author Skipped Military Service – Austin Ramzy (DIERSEN: Did you avoid the draft? Trump and I did. I should write a book about those who have punished me the most for my avoiding the draft by getting four student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/22/world/asia/kevin-kwan-crazy-rich-asians-singapore-military.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The author of “Crazy Rich Asians,” the best-selling novel on which the new hit film is based, never fulfilled his national service obligations in Singapore and could face a fine or potential prison term, the country’s Ministry of Defense said Wednesday. The status of the author, Kevin Kwan, was revealed by the authorities one day after the film, which was largely set and filmed in Singapore, made its premiere there. Mr. Kwan did not attend the opening there, although the director, Jon M. Chu, and several of the film’s stars did. Mr. Kwan, 44, left Singapore when he was 11 and moved to Houston. Singapore requires all male citizens to perform two years of service in the military, the police or the civil defense force, generally starting at age 18. Singaporeans are not allowed to renounce their citizenship until they turn 21, and can face legal problems if they try to do so without fulfilling their national service. Some profiles of Mr. Kwan said he became an American citizen at age 18. But Singapore appears to have not given up its claims to him. The Ministry of Defense said Mr. Kwan’s application to renounce his citizenship in 1994 was rejected, as was a subsequent appeal. “Mr. Kwan has committed offenses under the Enlistment Act,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that he could face a fine of up to $7,300 and/or imprisonment of up to three years if convicted.)

FOX ILLINOIS
— New legislation to help keep Illinois students in state – Senait Gebregiorgis (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, because Democrats run all the colleges in Illinois, if you earn a degree from a college in Illinois, you are presumed to be a Democrat. Ever-increasingly, Democrats are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. If I had attended or earned degrees from conservative colleges, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner is less popular than President Donald Trump. Thirty percent of Illinoisans have a favorable view of Trump, according to the NBC News/Marist poll, compared with Rauner’s 26 percent. Pritzker is at 38 percent in the poll. How Trump supporters lean. The poll notes that 58% of Trump voters in Cook County support Pritzker, vs. 21 percent for Rauner. More interesting, 43 percent of central/downstate Trump voters say they’ll vote for Pritzker, vs. 33 percent supporting Rauner. The fallout: A top of the ticket blowout could have serious down-ballot implications, especially for central and downstate congressional and state legislative races. Good example: Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bost in the 12th or U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis in the 13th District.

While I was a federal employee for almost 30 years, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates demonized me, denigrated me, and condemned me as being undeservedly filthy rich. They stressed the money that I spent on new cars, tuition, real estate, collector cars, etc. They stressed the money that I saved for retirement.
