POLITICO ILLINOIS
— GOP chair race in LEGAL turmoil – Natasha Korecki  (DIERSEN: When and how will the Illinois State Board of Elections respond to Winchester’s April 26, 2018 letter SEE:  https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000163-04de-d374-a77b-04df3b5c0000 ?)

https://www.politico.com/newsletters/illinois-playbook/2018/04/27/gop-party-chair-race-in-legal-turmoil-chicagos-new-municipal-id-rosensteins-opioid-crisis-closeup-266385
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Infighting within the state’s fractious GOP has spilled into the race for Illinois Republican Party chairman, raising questions over whether Gov. Bruce Rauner’s favored candidate — Tim Schneider — can win another term and opening a new divide in a state party that just can’t heal itself. Robert Winchester, a 15th district committeeman candidate, a key district in southern Illinois, is disputing the validity of the results of his own election and threatening the Illinois Republican Party with legal action if it continues to identify his opponent, state Sen. Chapin Rose, as the winner. (Quick primer: Rose is pro-Rauner/Schneider while Winchester is poised to back Schneider’s opponent for state party chair). Party response: “A majority of Republican precinct committeemen in IL-15 cast their vote for state Sen. Chapin Rose for State Central Committeemen, which means he is the winner of that election,” Illinois Republican Party spokesman Aaron DeGroot responded by email last night. Except: in documents obtained by POLITICO, Winchester is demanding the party refrain from naming Rose the victor in the 15th district and separately asking the Illinois State Board of Elections to call the race. In a letter addressed to Andrew Collins, the executive director of the Illinois Republican Party, Winchester’s attorney alleges “substantial irregularities in the voting procedures in key counties of the 15th district.” “It is thereby demanded that the IRP take down all of the announcements in which Rep. Rose is identified as either the person receiving the most votes in the 15th district or identifying Rep. Rose as a member of the new State Central Committee,” attorney Stephen Boulton wrote. “If the IRP refuses or fails to cease its actions, Mr. Winchester will be forced to consider appropriate and immediate legal action.” (Read letter here.) (https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000163-04dd-da04-a1fb-14ff7f250001) Boulton works for Peraica & Associates. Tony Peraica is the former Republican member of the Cook County Board whose client is suing Democratic House Speaker Mike Madigan in a separate case. In a separate letter to the State Board of Elections, (https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000163-04de-d374-a77b-04df3b5c0000) Winchester’s attorney argues that validating the outcome is the election board’s duty. Why is this all significant? The outcome of the 15th district race could determine the next statewide chairman and likely the direction of a party that nearly threw out its incumbent governor in March. Enter the newly-elected Republican State Central Committeemen, who are to meet May 19th to vote on the next chairman. Each of the votes is weighted. The district with the greatest weighted vote? The one under dispute in the 15th. While Rose supports Schneider, Winchester had pledged his support to challenger Mark Shaw, who is Lake County’s GOP Chairman. GOP sources tell us that the unofficial breakdown is pretty closely divided between Schneider and Shaw, making the 15th district outcome all that more impactful. Disunity: If Schneider cannot hold onto power, that’s a direct reflection on Rauner’s weakened grasp of his party. That’s a particularly stinging rebuke since Rauner has almost single-handedly funded the Illinois Republican Party apparatus. Even if Schneider wins another term, this latest turmoil only shows there’s a long road to repairing the rift in the party.)

My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the upper 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease). Further, my father had fought type 1 diabetes from age 14. I am sure that many thought that I would soon also come down with type 1 diabetes.)

Why? Because the state-wide leadership too often recruits the kind of candidates who not only do not support our state party platform, but typically lack leadership abilities and prove it when they get elected and show no capacity to even comprehend the power of their bully pulpit let alone become informed and vote in line with the party’s platform on legislation when they’re in Springfield. Is there a conservative majority on the SCC? It’s very close now, but regardless, a government conservative majority can be accomplished in four years.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Winchester retains counsel to challenge voting procedures in GOP Central Committee race – W.J. Kennedy
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511398631-sources-winchester-retains-counsel-to-challenge-voting-procedures-in-gop-central-committee-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sources have told Prairie State Wire that Bob Winchester has retained counsel to challenge the voting procedures used in his race for Republican State Central Committee in the 15th Congressional District, which the Illinois Republican Party claims was won by Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). The first step in the legal action is expected to be an appeal to the Illinois State Board of Elections, which under law, must certify the votes in party elections. Among other charges, Winchester is expected to challenge the use of votes by acclamation in some counties — a move that gives the candidate with more than half of the votes the entire final tally, which violates party rules and may violate state law. Republican sources said that the Republican Party put up Chapin to run against the incumbent Winchester as punishment for his backing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in the Republican primary against Gov. Bruce Rauner. Winchester, who could not be reached for comment, also opposes the re-election of GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. The party’s 18 central committee people, one representing each congressional district, is scheduled to meet May 19 to elect a state chairman, and sources say that Schneider’s re-election bid is in jeopardy. Mark Shaw, Lake County Republican chairman and central committeeman in the 10th Congressional District, said that people should not jump to conclusions about the outcome of the race between Winchester and Rose. “Just because the party said Chapin won doesn’t mean he won,” Shaw said. “Until May 19, there is no party governing board, and Chaplin can’t just show up on that day and act like he’s a committeeman. The results have to be certified first, and I expect the board will find a lot of irregularities in the voting process.” He added that he knows Winchester as a man of “integrity and honesty” and he would not be taking legal action unless he was convinced that election law procedures were violated. Results of the election show that Winchester received zero votes in nine of 33 counties, including four of the 10 most populated, a result that Shaw and others said would be impossible. Several counties, sources said, failed to even offer Winchester as a candidate for consideration. In Fayette County, home to Randy Pollard, Rauner’s downstate director, Winchester was not presented as an option. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Rose also received zero votes in 13 counties carried 100 percent by Winchester. In all, 22 of 33 counties voted by acclamation, representing 63 percent of Rose’s vote and 59 percent of Winchester’s. County votes are weighted based on their respective turnout in the March primary. Republican sources also said that aides to U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-Collinsville) recruited Rose to challenge Winchester, offering to help him replace Shimkus in Congress when the opportunity presents itself.)

Needless-to-say, no one who uses pot should be allowed a) to own any kind of firearm, ammunition, or weapon; b) to operate any kind of vehicle or equipment, c) to hold any kind of government or political job or office, d) etc. To use pot is to knowingly and willfully damage your brain.)

In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-dupage-salaries-freezes-increases-st-0425-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Board members Elizabeth Chaplin, Tonia Khouri and Brian Krajewski voted against the pay increases. “There’s no justification for giving out those raises,” Chaplin said. “Our county-wides are some of the highest-paid in the state.” “They do a fantastic job, but I think they’re already very well compensated and money is getting tighter and tighter for us,” Khouri said. “We were $3 million short from the state this year, so we need to watch every dollar. For me, it’s an economic issue.” In 2016, County Board members voted themselves 2 percent pay increases, which went into effect in December of that year and again in December of last year. Critics have charged that board salaries are too high in comparison with other nearby counties. Others, however, say the pay is in line with other counties when viewed on a per capita basis. “We understand these are tough times and we don’t feel it’s appropriate to give a pay raise to ourselves,” County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said. “We work very hard, we’ve cut our budget, we’ve cut taxes, we’ve reduced headcount and we’ve got a very compelling story to tell about good government here. We’re not in it for the money, we’re in it to serve.” In other county business, District 1 representative Paul Fichtner has resigned from the County Board due to a job change. Cronin said a replacement will be appointed in two weeks.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Just over a month after her narrow primary election loss to incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, state Rep. Jeanne Ives said she’ll continue to spread her message across the state. “I have a responsibility. I can’t just hide,” said Ives, a Wheaton Republican, during a stop at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel to address members of the Restore Our Constitution political group. “I’m not going to hide or go away. I’m not going to do that.” Ives said she plans to tour the state raising awareness of issues such as pensions and fiscal responsibility, and campaigning for fellow Republican candidates in an effort to win a majority in the state House of Representatives. How she will do the latter remains undetermined. She said she has already endorsed several candidates and given them information to use in political ads and talking points, such as their Democratic opponents’ voting records and ratings with different business groups. Ives said it is likely she will also start to make campaign visits with Republican candidates as the election season heads into the summer.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: State leaders are trying to bring more skilled workers to the state. Governor Rauner and Lieutenant Governor Sanguinetti are touring Europe and the state, respectively, to seek answers on vocational and training programs for Illinois youth. YouthBuild Mclean County in Central Illinois is one program close to home that is currently fulfilling the requirements. “Many decades ago our school system used to offer apprenticeship tracks”, said Lt. Governor Sanguinetti. “Over time we lost that… We need to bring back those types of programs to Illinois.” Governor Rauner is currently in Germany at an apprenticeship program learning the ways of the system and how it functions. Sanguinetti says that a four year program is not for everyone and allowing our youth the right to choose what they want to do at an early age will be more beneficial to their future. “For many of our youth, access and opportunity is not looking very bright,” said Sanguinetti. She went on to say “a place like YouthBuild gives them the tools that they will need to succeed in life in a non traditional way.”)

DAILY HERALD
— Some raises, some pay freezes for DuPage County officials – Robert Sanchez
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180424/some-raises-some-pay-freezes-for-dupage-county-officials–
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Salaries will be frozen for a dozen DuPage County Board members and the chairman for at least the next four years. Meanwhile, several countywide officials will get 2 percent annual pay hikes during each of the next two years before their pay is frozen in fiscal 2021 and 2022. The raises — and freezes — were approved Tuesday when the county board set pay scales for the sheriff, treasurer, county clerk, county board chairman and 12 county board members for the next four years. All the positions are up for election in November. DuPage board members will continue to make $52,102. They also are eligible to receive health insurance and a pension through the county. The board chairman is the only countywide elected official who won’t get a pay raise; the position pays $131,559 a year. As for other countywide officials, the county clerk and treasurer will have their annual salaries increase by 2 percent to $148,395 when fiscal 2019 begins on Dec. 1. Their pay will increase to $151,363 for fiscal 2020. The sheriff will be paid $171,462 for fiscal 2019 and $174,891 for fiscal 2020. Also on Tuesday, the county board agreed to increase the amount DuPage contributes to the annual salary for the regional superintendent of schools. Darlene Ruscitti gets an annual salary of $113,900 from the state. The county then pays her an additional amount. Starting July 1, 2019, the amount will increase by 2 percent to $33,246. It will increase by another 2 percent to $33,911 in 2020.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “This settlement provides remuneration for the damages the election commission incurred, while also clearing a path for a new vendor to provide service to DuPage County voters in November,” Cronin said. As part of the settlement, Cronin said: Liberty Systems will not be paid for the kits that supplied the ender cards. Three other contracts with Liberty Systems will be terminated immediately. The commission will seek other bids for election supplies to be used in the November election and Liberty Systems will not be considered. The company will repair or replace 167 machines damaged by the faulty ender cards. The company will compensate the county for the overtime costs incurred on election night. . .In addition to the settlement, Cronin said the commission is acting on his request to bring in additional staff for election oversight.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Illinois House approves spending of $635K on three “lactation and wellness” rooms at State Capitol (DIERSEN: During the early 1990s, to help GAO a) hire, retain, and promote young women and b) to get rid of its employees who smoked (overwhelmingly old White men), GAO gutted the smoking room in its Chicago office and turned it into a lactation room.)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511397874-illinois-house-approves-spending-of-635k-on-three-lactation-and-wellness-rooms-at-state-capitol
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Lactation rooms should provide, at a minimum, a lockable door; a work surface and chair; a small utility-type sink; storage for cleaning supplies and paper towels; adequate HVAC service, including a thermostat; and well-placed electrical outlets,” according to the AIA. “Telephone service and network connections for the room are also recommended to increase worker safety and productivity. Accessibility guidelines should be met for all the features of the room.” AIA standards also dictate the coating used for the table work surface (“plastic laminate”), the size of the table (“20 inch deep by 30 inch wide”), the location of power outlets and other “useful accessories” that must be required, including “a trash can, a paper towel dispenser, a coat rack or coat hooks, a full-length mirror, a magazine rack, and a bulletin board.” The Illinois Capital Development Board, which would handle the lactation room construction, estimated the construction cost at $211,856 per room or $847.42 per square foot, provided the room were 250 square feet. The only ‘no’ vote was State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), who suggested the state should pay its $8.4 billion in unpaid bills before considering new projects like this one. The bill, House Bill 1042, now goes to the Illinois State Senate for approval. Last month, the Senate passed a resolution to approve the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would render female-only accommodations like a lactation room unconstitutional.)

They are nasty rule-or-ruin types. They focus on destroying individuals, destroying organizations, destroying companies, destroying governments, and destroying countries that they cannot manipulate/dominate. According to them, the only news that is not fake is the news that they put out or bless. They blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all of their problems, for all of your problems, for all of my problems, and for all of everyone’s problems. They blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all the defeats that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000.)
http://www.illinoishomepage.net/news/local-news/lawmakers-push-net-neutrality-at-state-level/1136892136
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Monday net neutrality rules expired nationwide but Williams is spearheading a plan to keep regulations in place in Illinois. She fears without it, internet providers will be able to charge higher rates and limit access. “Right now consumers can access the internet not as a luxury but as a necessity and when that’s something that you need for everyday life, if that’s for access to government services, to go to school or to do work for small business, we think that should be open for everyone.” Though the FCC okayed changes nationally, she’s taking control where she can. Under her proposal, providers who don’t abide by net neutrality rules can’t do business with the state.)

ILLINOIS CHURCH ACTION ON ALCOHOL & ADDICTION PROBLEMS
— Gambling Action Alert (DIERSEN: I just called my Senator Mike Connelly’s office and asked for him to not only vote NO on SB 3166 and SB 3452, but to also speak against those bills.)
http://ilcaaap.org/gambling-alert/
(FROM THE ALERT: Call your Senator to Vote NO on SB 3166, SB 3452 Senator Terry Link is sponsoring two bills to expand gambling. SB 3166 and SB 3452 are on 3rd reading and could be called for a vote at any time. SB 3166 allows licensed veterans establishments to operate video gambling machines in a municipality or unincorporated area of a county that has banned video gambling. The Video Gambling Act allows municipalities to “opt out” of video gambling. SB 3166 would open the door for video gambling in other liquor pouring establishments to “even the playing field”. Problem, Pathological Gambling Rates High Among Veterans: About 8% of U.S. veterans are problem gamblers, and an additional 2% are pathological gamblers, a study from the Department of Veterans Affairs reveals. People who have more posttraumatic symptoms, anxiety, and depression tend to have more gambling problems. “Read more SB 3452 legalizes Internet betting on horse racing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from computers, smart phones, I-pads and tablets. The General Assembly approved a three-year Advanced Deposit Wagering “pilot program” in 2009. SB 3452 would extend Internet gambling on horse racing until 2022. SB 3452 will not save horse racing, but will make track owners and their ADW companies richer. For Immediate Action Call your State Senator TODAY and ask him/her to Vote NO on SB 3166 and SB 3452 -expansion of gambling. I should write a book about LGBTQ promoters in Wheaton and in Glen Ellyn who demonize, denigrate, and condemn my parents because they sent me to Trinity Lutheran Grade School in Crete 1953-1961 and then to Hope Lutheran Grade School in Park Forest 1961-1962 to stay with the Missouri Synod. — Madigan and lone chairmanship “No” vote together on Joravsky’s show (FROM THE ARTICLE: I doubt we’ll ever see Rauner and Ives appear together on Dan Proft’s radio show.) (DIERSEN: QUESTION: If/when Rauner loses to Pritzker, who will the Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs blame? ANSWER: Those who supported Ives in the primary. I supported Pat O’Malley in the 2002 Republican gubernatorial primary. I should write a book about those who continue to blame me, but not Dan Proft, for Jim Ryan’s defeat in the general election.)
https://capitolfax.com/2018/04/24/todays-must-listen-madigan-and-lone-chairmanship-no-vote-together-on-joravskys-show/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Speaker Michael Madigan was a guest on “The Ben Joravsky Show” radio program yesterday, which is odd in and of itself. The anti-machine Chicago Reader columnist ain’t exactly a member of the Madigan wing of the Democratic Party. But making this even more interesting, Madigan appeared on the show with Peter Janko, who was the lone vote against Madigan’s bid for party chairman yesterday. Everyone appeared to get along fine, partly because Madigan kept the focus on defeating Gov. Rauner. Madigan was also asked what he would say to Alaina Hampton if he could.)

— Ronny Jackson, Trump’s V.A. Nominee, Faces Claims of Overprescription and Hostile Work Environment – Nicholas Fandos (DIERSEN: Have you worked in a hostile work environment? While I worked for GAO 1980-1997 in its Chicago office, the work environment became increasingly hostile for its employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee is examining allegations that President Trump’s nominee to lead the Veterans Affairs Department oversaw a hostile work environment as the White House physician and allowed the overprescribing of drugs, according to congressional officials briefed on the committee’s work. They have also received claims that Dr. Ronny L. Jackson drank too much on the job. The allegations, which have been under investigation since last week, forced the postponement of Dr. Jackson’s confirmation hearing, planned for this Wednesday as senators scrutinize the nominee’s time leading the White House medical staff. Officials familiar with the allegations against Dr. Jackson declined to offer precise details but said that they suggest a pattern of behavior, not just one or two isolated incidents.)
— ERA: A Rebuke to Trump, a Century in the Making – Editorial
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/19/opinion/a-rebuke-to-trump-a-century-in-the-making.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Then there’s the question of what the E.R.A. would do. Even the most die-hard proponents of the amendment acknowledge that it’s unlikely to radically advance women’s rights, at least in the short term. That’s because, for decades, many courts have applied the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to sex discrimination, creating a body of case law that’s functioned as a sort of de facto E.R.A. As to whether the amendment could actually undo some programs that are beneficial to women, like sex-based affirmative action efforts, legal experts point to the fact that though the Constitution already protects the rights of people regardless of race, race-based affirmative action continues to exist. They also point to parts of the country that have state-level E.R.A.s and have not had such outcomes.)

https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511395512-rauner-pays-35k-to-firm-of-brady-ex-gop-chairman-ives-critic
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Brady acted as a defacto spokesman for Rauner during the primary, making regular media appearances where he would attack Ives, though he was never formally identified as such. He dubbed Ives and her supporters “haters” for opposing Rauner’s policy positions as governor. “There is no room in the Republican Party for racist, bigoted, homophobic candidates like her,” Brady said in February, after Ives ran a television ad criticizing Rauner’s support of taxpayer-funded abortions, “Sanctuary State” legislation and allowing Illinoisans to change the biological sex on their birth certificates.” Brady said Ives was too “extreme” and could not win a statewide election. In 2016, Brady actively opposed President Donald Trump, saying a vote for him is “a vote for Hillary Clinton.” “(Trump) gets creamed by Hillary Clinton,” Brady said. “I don’t care what anybody says, there’s absolutely no way that if he goes against Hillary Clinton, that he’s going to prevail.” Brady served as Illinois GOP Chairman from 2009 to 2013 before he was forced to resign after trying to change the party platform to support gay marriage. He was later hired by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to lobby for gay marriage in Illinois. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Ben Stratemeyer won a contested race over Judy Shaefer 1,104 to 352, while Democrat Dan Stover won by acclamation. Stratemeyer feels the local Republican party is in good shape. “Our organization is strong, we have a lot of volunteers, and our slate is full. We basically have all incumbents except for one office, so we’re in very good shape heading into the fall. I do anticipate a very successful election of the local candidates in Marion County,” said Stratemeyer. Shaefer was unanimously elected as 1st Vice Chair after several others declined the nomination. Debby Smith beat Wayne Walker 11-8 to be party secretary and Wayne Putnum beat Bill Smith to be party treasurer. (FROM THE ARTICLE: “Democrats make their decision during the midterm elections while Republicans only allow just the elected precinct committeemen to vote on their state central committeeman,” Harlan told the West Central Reporter. “This results in what is called the ‘good ol boy club’ and it is extremely difficult to overcome an incumbent in this situation because they are typically hand-picked.” Harlan said his dedication to conservatism and unwillingness to sway from his values may have had a roile in his not being selected. “I am an unapologetic conservative that the establishment does not want to have in the executive committee,” Harlan said. While this election may be over, Harlan is not giving up on his passion for true political reform. “I am never opposed to running if no one else steps forward,” Harland said. “I believe that we should always provide an option for others to vote on. American democracy is best served when all people have an opportunity to have their voices heard.”)

NBC NEWS
— Syracuse University fraternity suspended after ‘extremely racist’ video apologizes Kent Syverud, Syracuse’s chancellor, said of the video purportedly showing members of Theta Tau: “I am appalled and shaken by this.” – Erik Ortiz (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, anti-Trumps paint Trump supporters as being White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things. Anti-Trumps are disciples of Saul Alinsky.)
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/syracuse-university-suspends-fraternity-after-extremely-racist-video-surfaces-n867401
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The videos, Syverud said in a letter to the campus, includes “words and behaviors that are extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist, and hostile to people with disabilities. I am appalled and shaken by this and deeply concerned for all members of our community.” Earlier Wednesday, Syracuse students demonstrated in front of the chancellor’s building and the Theta Tau fraternity to demand the release of the videos after they were removed from Facebook. Later, The Daily Orange, an independently run school newspaper, shared a copy of a six-minute video from a new member ceremony last month. In it, the brothers take part in a performance that includes one person reciting an oath: “I solemnly swear to always have hatred in my heart,” he says, then referring to blacks, Hispanics and Jews in derogatory terms. He then mimics performing oral sex on another person. Participants laugh and cheer throughout. Theta Tau updated its website Thursday to apologize for the video and explain why it was done. The fraternity said that each semester, new members are given a chance to write a skit to roast the active brothers. One skit was meant as a parody in order to roast a brother who is a conservative Republican. The new members pretended to be racist conservative character. “It was a satirical sketch of an uneducated, racist, homophobic, misogynist, sexist, ableist and intolerant person. The young man playing the part of this character nor the young man being roasted do not hold any of the horrible views espoused as a part of that sketch,” Theta Tau said. The fraternity added that it has a diverse membership, but that “many bright lines were obviously crossed.” The group added that it would “maintain a dialogue” with fellow students.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The only thing more tearful than the goodbyes of dropping a freshman off at college are the four years of tuition, rent, food and books that follow. The College Board pegs the average annual cost, over all, at in-state institutions at $25,290. If your student is turning the tassel this spring, congratulations. Your checkbook deserves a well-earned breather. It might have to endure one last flogging, though. Should that sheepskin result in a job (and let’s hope so!) a vehicle may be needed. Or maybe you have a high school graduate who will be commuting to college, or one diving straight into the working world. Sending them off with a solid automobile is a terrific — albeit extravagant — graduation gift. Even if it’s simply a hefty down payment to get them started, think of it as a final investment. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2018/04/20/mulvaney-defends-pay-freeze-even-for-feds-he-knows-are-underpaid/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Office of Management and Budget director Mick Mulvaney told a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday that an “analysis of the way that we paid federal workers seemed to indicate that we overpay at the lower levels and underpay at the upper levels.” But he defended the freeze proposed in Trump’s fiscal 2019 budget plan, saying, “We’re going to freeze everybody, and then put a bunch of money in this pot to try to give us the flexibility necessary to reward the people that were really performing well.” Some employees “might be really good at their jobs,” he added, “and some of the might not be, yet we . . . come close to paying them pretty much the same. ” Mulvaney indicated that the General Schedule (GS), the federal pay system for 70 percent of federal employees, has outlived its usefulness. It was created in 1949 and “hasn’t really been dramatically overhauled since then,” he said. “And it’s led to a situation where we pay entry level more than we probably should, but we don’t pay the really advanced, experienced people as much as we should.”)

– Who are the candidates for the Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee position for your congressional district, how well do you know them, what have they promised to do if elected, who has endorsed them, which ones are you going to vote for, and why?
– Who are the newly elected officers of your Republican township party organization, how well do you know them, what did they promise to do if elected, who endorsed them?

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Toni Preckwinkle expected to ascend to Cook County Democratic chairman today – Hal Dardick (DIERSEN: Why isn’t the Chicago Tribune reporting like this on races for a) Illinois Republican Party (IRP) county and township party offices and b) IRP State Central Committeemen offices?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-preckwinkle-democratic-chairman-20180417-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every two years, potential candidates line up to make their pitches to party leaders. The ones who win endorsement are asked to contribute $40,000 to the party, which uses the money on election mailings, robocalls and get-out-the-vote efforts. And when the primaries are done, the party works to elect the nominees in the general election. The names of endorsed candidates are placed on palm cards — lists of party-endorsed candidates handed out by precinct committeemen. But what was once a monolithic effort is no longer. Many ward and township committeemen now go their own way, omitting the names of endorsed candidates and sometimes replacing them with their preferred candidates — as happened with Kaegi in many townships and wards.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/machine-shifting-gears-toni-preckwinkle-poised-to-make-history/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Given this moment of heightened racial awareness … having a black woman as head of the political party in Cook County says that at least there is an overt acknowledgement that African Americans and women are good leaders,” said Jacky Grimshaw, a former aide to Mayor Harold Washington, the city’s first black mayor. “That’s not to say that the party has overcome its racial bias.” The party that Preckwinkle would lead looks different than the one Berrios took over in 2007. Berrios spokeswoman Monica Trevino said in a statement that under Berrios’ leadership, the number of minority Democratic candidates increased by 76 percent, and twice as many women have been slated for countywide office. “The leadership of the Cook County Democratic Party is mostly men, mostly white and mostly old school,” Carol Marin wrote in a 2007 Sun-Times column prior to Berrios’ election as chairman. Berrios took over shortly before Barack Obama won his election as the first African American U.S. president. “There’s even more reason to breathe some life, some youth and some real diversity into the leadership of this sickly organization,” Marin wrote back then.)

EVANSTON ROUNDTABLE
— Nichols’ Use of Racial Affinity Groups Questioned, and Defended – Larry Gavin
http://evanstonroundtable.com/Main.asp?SectionID=16&SubSectionID=27&ArticleID=14941
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Commissioner Kirsanow’s Letter Mr. Kirsanow, an African American who is generally regarded as holding conservative views, made clear in his letter that he was sending the letter as one member of the Commission, not on behalf of the Commission. Mr. Kirsanow said he assumes the segregated meetings were instituted in response to a recommendation in District 65’s May 2017 Equity Report that the District create “social identity affinity groups.” He said, “I am astonished that District 65 spent taxpayer money on a report that includes the recommendation, ‘separate teachers by race.’ Separating teachers by race fosters racial division and is prima facie unlawful. By its nature, it forces teachers to view themselves in terms of what divides them, rather than what they have in common. It also encourages a binary view of society that, depending on your perspective, is either, ‘whites against everyone else’ or ‘everyone else against whites.’ It may even foster a sense among both groups that they are threatened by the other. “However well-intentioned, this is segregation for the 21st century,” Mr. Kirsanow said. “Unless a legitimate, nondiscriminatory educational reason can be articulated, the segregation almost certainly would be found unlawful. Discussions of politically correct notions of ‘privilege,’ unsupported by methodological rigor, do not qualify as legitimate reasons, and they are by their own definition discriminatory.” The letter also suggested that the District’s hiring practices may run afoul of prohibitions against racial discrimination in hiring. He also raised a question about the Equity Report’s analysis of the achievement gap. While stating that the achievement gap is concerning, he says, “It’s interesting that the equity report assiduously avoids any examination of the home lives of the children as a possible partial explanation for the achievement gap. “The racially-conscious efforts you and District 65 have undertaken will foster racial division instead of racial understanding. Sending teachers to racially separate meetings is a stark picture of the future you are sowing. You are encouraging students and teachers to view each other as members of groups, not as individuals.”)

Were you considered to be college material? While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the top 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease). The prizes go to “the most competitive applicants in the pool,” admissions materials say, and include awards of $5,000 to $30,000 for each student. At some other colleges, a solid majority of students get similarly hefty scholarships. At still others, virtually everyone gets them. Hundreds of colleges and universities are using academic scholarships and other merit-based financial aid to gain an edge in a battle for students. The scholarships make students feel wanted and let families think they’re getting a good deal, like a shopper who buys an expensive sweater on sale.)

She garnered 341,836 statewide votes, while spending about $4.3 million since first announcing her run. Ives received $3.926 million in contributions, with $2.5 million from Richard Uihlein and $20,000 from conservative radio host Dan Proft. Illinois Policy Institute CEO John Tillman also contributed $5,000 to Ives’ campaign. The bulk of Ives’ campaign money — $2.74 million — was spent on advertising. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner spent over four times more than state Rep. Jeanne Ives in the months before his narrow primary victory on March 20. The first-term governor spent about $17.7 million in the first quarter, according to campaign records filed late Monday. That’s compared with about $4.3 million spent by Ives, who lost by just three percentage points. And Democrat J.B. Pritzker spent nearly double what Rauner did, reporting $34 million in expenses this year, far more than state Sen. Daniel Biss’ $5.8 million and Kenilworth businessman Chris Kennedy’s $3.9 million. Rauner starts the fall campaign with about $38.5 million in his campaign fund for what some observers predict could be the most expensive governor campaign in history. Pritzker showed about $8.1 million in the bank at the start of the month. He’s given his campaign $7 million since the primary ended, bringing his self-funding total to $76.5 million.)

https://www.illinoispolicy.org/more-than-100-township-governments-file-in-opposition-to-township-consolidation-bill/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One common critique of consolidation measures by government officials is that services would be diminished. But HB 3133 provides that the responsibilities and obligations of a dissolved township be transferred to its receiving county, suggesting that residents could expect continued delivery of public services at a reduced cost. This concept is not without precedent: DuPage County has eliminated multiple units of local government, while consolidating the services of others, since the passage of a 2013 consolidation law that only applied to DuPage County. In a 2015 report, Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti held up the DuPage example as a model for fiscal reform for other counties. Sure enough, lawmakers representing Lake and McHenry counties successfully pushed through the General Assembly a similar consolidation bill that extended much of DuPage County’s consolidation powers to both counties.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that since 1966, my Republican U.S. Representatives, my Republican U.S. Representatives, and their staffs have despised me if not hated me and wanted the Post Office, IRS, and GAO to take adverse actions against me.)

— Tax Overhaul Remains Unpopular, Poll Shows Overall, 27% view law as good idea, while 36% see it as bad idea; Republicans hoped law would become more popular after enactment – Janet Hook (DIERSEN: Roskam should increase the $10,000 SALT cap to $20,000 for married filing jointly. Those who oppose that a) do not want government to encourage marriage or homeownership, b) are not married or have a spouse who has little or no income, and/or c) pay little or no real estate tax.)

— FRONT PAGE: BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS: Yes, It’s Tax Day and You’re Still Doing Returns for Your Adult Children Parents are preparing returns for their grown children even into their 40s, with no plans to hand over the chore – Katherine Bindley (DIERSEN: Do you prepare your own tax returns? Because they make tax laws for all of us, all U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators should be required to prepare their own tax returns, and they if fail/refuse to do that, they should be barred from having anything to do with tax laws. I have prepared my own tax returns since I was 16 years old in 1965. I have filed itemized returns since I was 24 year old in 1973. I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. I worked for GAO on audits of IRS 1986-1988 at the GS-13 Step 1-3 levels, currently $96,403-$102,830. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I earned master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980. I paid less federal income tax 1972-1977 because I itemized and my wife and I have paid less federal income tax since 1978 because we have itemized. However, because of the marriage penalty, my wife and I have paid more federal income tax since 1978. It seems that those who are not married and those whose spouse has little or no income want to keep the marriage penalty or even increase it. It seems that those who pay little or no real estate tax and/or state income tax want those deductions to be capped. I am more than happy to teach U.S. Representatives, U.S. Senators, and their staffs how to use Quicken and Turbotax.)

April 16 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. QUESTION: What should Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) candidates promise to do, and do, if they are elected? ANSWER: Defend and advance the IRP platform. Be loyal to the platform and NOT to whoever gives them, or the IRP, the most money. Notify in a timely manner all the party leaders and elected Precinct Committeemen in their congressional district of the date, time, and location of IRP SCC meetings. Seek input for agenda items from the aforesaid before each IRP SCC meeting. Provide the aforesaid with IRP SCC meeting agendas as soon as they are finalized. Attend all IRP SCC meetings and actively represent the Republicans in their district. Provide the party leaders and elected Precinct Committeemen in their district with a summary of major actions taken at IRP SCC meetings within a week after the meetings. Appoint a member to the 2020 IRP State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee who is a Republican, and NOT a RINO, a Democrat plant, a Libertarian plant, or a Green plant. Appoint a Deputy IRP SCC Member who can and will help you do the aforesaid. Further, IRP SCC candidates should be extremely financially secure because RINOs, Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, and Green plants are moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means, because they are disciples of Saul Alinsky, and because they have destroyed and will destroy those who defend and advance the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and other planks in the IRP platform. – Dave Diersen

— Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. Do you support all the planks in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform? I do. Are you a conservative? I am. How would you react if a Republican candidate hinted/implied/argued/shouted a) that conservatives run the IRP, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Milton Township Central Committee, etc., b) that those conservatives should stop purging “those who don’t completely align with our platform,” and c) that Rauner’s rejection of the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks in the IRP platform did not justify a primary challenge? PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Rauner attempts conservative “purge” of Illinois GOP leadership (DIERSEN: Incumbents who go against their party’s platform want a primary challenge. It certainly looks like Rauner went against the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform to get a conservative to challenge him in the primary. It certainly looks like Rauner’s reelection strategy was to use his crushing that conservative to run as an anti-conservative to get votes from Democrats like most Republican candidates in Illinois do. Obviously, Rauner erroneously assumed that he would crush Ives.)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511392525-rauner-attempts-conservative-purge-of-illinois-gop-leadership
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner is publicly preaching party unity on the campaign trail. But behind the scenes, Rauner is quietly leading an effort to purge conservatives from the Illinois Republican State Central Committee, which governs the party. At issue: the re-election of current Illinois GOP Chairman Timothy O. Schneider of Bartlett, a close ally of Rauner and a sharp critic of State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in the recent gubernatorial primary. “He’s in trouble,” a source close to the situation told Prairie State Wire. Lake County GOP Chairman Mark Shaw is mounting a strong challenge to Schneider, sources say. Republican precinct committeemen gather at their county conventions this Wed. to nominate and elect eighteen State Central Committee members, or one from each Illinois congressional district. State Central Committee members will meet in May to select the state party chairman. Rauner and his allies have targeted three members for defeat– John McGlasson of Pontiac (16th Congressional District/U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger), Robert Winchester, Sr. of Rosiclare (15th Congressional District/U.S. Rep. John Shimkus) and Fred Floreth of Springfield (13th Congressional District/U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis). DeWitt County GOP Chairman Dustin Peterson dropped his challenge to Floreth on Friday, after reports that he had once been arrested for a DUI. Challenging McGlasson is State Rep. Thomas Demmer (R-Dixon) and Winchester, State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). . .Sources say Rauner allies have offered to have Rose will withdraw his candidacy and put a designee of Winchester, a retired state employee who spent ten years in the Illinois House (1974-84) and joined the State Central Committee in 2002, on the Illinois GOP payroll. Illinois House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) and Illinois Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) are backing Rose’s bid and criticizing Winchester for being disloyal to the governor, sources say. Winchester campaigned at the Bond County Lincoln Day Dinner Saturday night, but Rose did not appear. Detmers Fansler, a former aide to then-Illinois Secretary of State George Ryan, was ousted from the State Central Committee in 2014 after backing then-chairman Pat Brady, a Rauner ally who sought to change the party platform to support gay marriage.)

https://capitolfax.com/2018/04/05/circular-firing-squad-battle-moves-to-state-central-committee-races/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every four years, Republican Party conventions of precinct committeemen are held in every Illinois county for the purpose of electing state central committee members in each of the state’s congressional districts. The filing deadline was March 26th. Dave Diersen posted a list of contested races. I’ve added incumbent (i) designations… . . . That’s a lot of challenges. I asked Dan Proft if he was behind any of these candidates in an attempt to take over the party. Chris Cleveland was a big Jeanne Ives supporter, for example, as was David Smith, Patrick Harlan and others on that list. Proft’s texted response… Think you’ve got it reversed. It reads to me as if Rauner and his big government apparatchiks are working to continue their purge of conservatives from the party per their backing candidates against McGlasson, Floreth and Winchester. Message to Ives and her supporters: leave the party. I checked in with the ILGOP, former statewide candidate Bob Grogan and the Ives campaign, but haven’t yet heard back. . .KOL: What is going on in the 6th? All three are Rauner allies, so I thought)
