https://wgntv.com/news/politics/gop-searching-for-new-leader-in-illinois-as-party-sets-sights-on-governors-race-in-2022/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sources said the early top contender is Mark Shaw of Lake County, who two years ago wanted to take on Schneider but backed down when offered a new position as co-chairman for Conservative and Grassroots Outreach. “I think it would be somebody who has good communication skills, first of all. But also a strong track record of fundraising for political activities as well as experience running campaigns,” said Richard Porter, a member of the Republican National Committee representing Illinois. Schneider’s departure caught some party insiders like House GOP leader Jim Durkin by surprise. “I think that there was a conflict – as there always is – between the chairman and party but I think Tim made a decision on his own,” Durkin said. The state party is touting success in last month’s election, Governor JB Pritzker’s graduated income tax was defeated, a Democratic Supreme Court justice lost his retention contest and the party picked up a House seat. “We have to get a new chairman in, one who’s going to be a person that appeals to not only conservatives but moderates, independents and also disenfranchised Democrats,” Durkin said.)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/nation-world/ct-nw-nyt-2020-election-swings-20201207-fkugcls5rnc6vcczblux4rgty4-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Education  Among metropolitan areas with a population over 250,000, three Colorado metros — fast-growing Colorado Springs, Denver and Fort Collins — topped the list for swings against Trump in two-party vote share. Colorado has one of the nation’s highest rates of people with a four-year college degree, and this year it solidified its status as a blue state. Colorado’s shift against Trump was 8.6 points, second only to Vermont’s 9 points. A part of conservative-leaning Kentucky posted one of the bigger anti-Trump shifts. The Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky, metropolitan area, which flipped from red to blue and is home to the University of Kentucky, has the highest percentage of college graduates in the region and is in the top fifth of metros for college attainment. And what about the big swing in the Huntsville area in deep-red Alabama? Fast-growing places with brighter economic prospects — correlated with a higher number of people with college degrees and more jobs in professional, tech and creative fields — moved toward Biden. A highly educated workforce in Huntsville, first put to use in industries like aerospace, has become attractive to other businesses in recent years. Suburban areas in Nebraska swung significantly toward Biden. Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes well-educated Omaha, contributed one electoral vote to Biden’s tally. It “swung against Trump more than any swing state,” according to Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report. The swing was 8.8 points, as the district flipped from red to blue.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Todd Ricketts isn’t ruling out a run for governor, according to a source close to the Cubs co-owner. The revelation follows Tim Schneider’s announcement over the weekend that he is stepping down as state party chairman, prompting chatter that Ricketts, who is also chairman of the Republican National Committee’s finance committee, may be a possible — though unlikely — replacement. “Todd thinks Tim did a great job as state chair. As Todd is continuing as RNC Finance chairman, he will not be a candidate for state chair,” the source said, which leaves Ricketts’ options open for a statewide run. Schneider’s exit has prompted a flurry of interest — and name-dropping — about who might replace him, including: retiring Congressman John Shimkus, state Central Committeewomen Jan Weber or Barbara Viviano; Will County GOP Chairman George Pearson, a Black man with military, business and political experience; and Lake County Republican Party Chairman Mark Shaw, who also serves as state-party co-chairman. Schneider announced his exit during a virtual meeting of the Republican State Central Committee on Saturday. It caught some folks by surprise. But conservatives in the group pounced, wanting to name Shaw chairman. He wasn’t able to get enough votes and party leaders instead decided to make it an open search. Shaw is still expected to apply, though some in the Republican Party are concerned about his track record in Lake County. Democrats ousted GOP incumbents for state’s attorney and coroner last month, and they retained circuit court clerk and recorder seats. Democrats on the County Board also upped their majority from 12-9 to 15-6. The Tribune’s Rick Pearson describes Shaw as “a controversial figure” in GOP politics, for his shoot-from-the-hip tweets. Statewide, meanwhile, Republicans saw two big wins Nov. 3 with the defeat of Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s graduated income tax plan and stopping Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride, a Democrat, from being retained. Now the party looks to capitalize on those victories and ramp up fundraising. It’s treating the hunt for a new chairman the way a company would conduct a CEO search. “We’ve pulled ourselves out of a dip and want to go into growth mode,” said one GOP source. The challenge the next chairman has isn’t any different than what Schneider has faced: managing the views of downstate Republicans vs. those in the northern part of the state. . .CABELLO seeks recount after loss: “State Rep. John Cabello is seeking a recount after the Republican’s narrow defeat to local attorney Dave Vella in the Nov. 3 election. Final election results in the race for the 68th District seat in the Illinois House of Representatives put Democratic challenger Vella 239 votes ahead after 53,301 were cast in Rockford and Winnebago County combined. Cabello on Friday filed paperwork with the Rockford Board of Elections asking for a recount in 10 Rockford precincts located inside six different wards,” by Rockford Register Star’s Jeff Kolkey.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— A dogfight rocks the top of the Illinois GOP. And there’s more at stake than the chairmanship. – GREG HINZ
https://www.chicagobusiness.com/greg-hinz-politics/dogfight-rocks-top-illinois-gop
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to party sources, Schneider, a former Cook County commissioner who was first made chairman by then-Gov. Bruce Rauner six years ago, has become tired of the unpaid job and particularly of clashes with central committee conservatives. He apparently wants to move on to private pursuits. At the weekend meeting, committee members went into closed executive session for more than three and a half hours, sources say, with conservative leader Mark Shaw, the Lake County chairman, coming within “one vote, maybe two” of winning the state post. Instead, a committee of two people from each side will try to work things out in coming weeks. How they will do that is not clear. Shaw didn’t return a phone call, and exactly what he would do differently than Schneider is not clear. But his style and that of his allies is reminiscent of how then-state Rep. Jeanne Ives almost toppled Rauner in the 2018 GOP primary with an in-your-face campaign during which she sharply underlined differences on abortion, gun rights, immigration and other matters. Revisiting that comes as the national GOP has been mostly mute over Trump’s unfounded claims that the election was “rigged” and must be overturned by Republican lawmakers. Notably among those castigating Trump for that and other stances is the only Republican congressman to represent part of the Chicago suburbs, Channahon’s Adam Kinzinger. Many in the party believe he’s trying to position himself to run for higher office—against Gov. J.B. Pritzker, or perhaps Sen. Tammy Duckworth, both up for re-election in 2022—and wants to build up some chits in what overall is a blue state. I suspect Kinzinger will keep a close eye on the chairmanship battle, the outcome of which could ease or complicate any effort by him to move up. The irony is that this battle—Shaw also ran for chairman two years ago—comes at a time when Republicans have some opportunity. Not only are Democrats divided over Madigan, but they just lost an Illinois Supreme Court seat and Pritzker faces only bad and worse fiscal choices in the wake of the defeat of his graduated income tax. Conservatives probably will argue the better path to success is not to rely on the business establishment, but to rev up their base. Perhaps. Meantime, we’ll see how nasty this fight gets. If it’s half as nasty as Trump’s exit plan, it will be a beaut.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— FIGHT OVER THE NEXT IL GOP CHAIRMAN REVS UP
https://www.illinoisreview.com/illinoisreview/2020/12/fight-over-who-the-next-il-gop-chairman-revs-up.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So with all this to boast about, the Illinois Republican Party once again is at a crossroads: Do they follow the establishment elite, so-called “Pat Brady” path, or do they choose the path their conservative activist base has been begging for? According to the IL GOP’s press release, Schneider is stepping down after six years because he’s ready to do so. It appears he may be planning to stay around until a committee of four State Central Committee members he’s appointed find a replacement. Those committee members line up on two sides of the battle lines: Mike Bigger (18th CD) and long-time Jim Durkin staffer Judy Diekelman (2nd CD) on the “Pat Brady” party side and Char Foss-Eggeman (9th CD) and Fred Floreth (13th CD) more on the conservative base side. The former “Pat Brady” side of the equation line up with GOP powerhouses that endorsed and promoted John Kasich in the 2016 presidential bid and tend to promote “moderate” social views, Democrat tolerance and political career preservation. The conservative base has endured year after year of the Pat Brady mindset mocking them, telling them to get out of the party and take with them their conservative social views. Illinois Review will be working on getting responses from names we’ve heard are in the mix to succeed Schneider – including State Central Committeeman Mark Shaw, Mike Bigger on one side and names from the conservative side, including former State Rep. Jeanne Ives, former GOP IL Senate candidate Tom McCallagh, Cubs owner Todd Ricketts and businessman Gary Rabine.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2020/12/01/ijeoma-oluo-mediocre-book-white-male-america/6466188002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Oluo isn’t insinuating all white men are mediocre: “What I’m saying is that white male mediocrity is a baseline, the dominant narrative, and that everything in our society is centered around preserving white male power regardless of while male skill or talent.” Slavery and backlash to the Great Migration; the takeover of indigenous lands and genocide of Native Americans; modern-day politics across the political spectrum; higher education’s racist roots and continuing struggle to deal with racism; and her own experiences with internet trolls, including the endangerment of her son, are just some of the examples the author of USA TODAY best-seller “So You Want to Talk About Race” (2018) invokes in the well-researched, yet highly personal, tome that shines a spotlight on modern-day racism and white supremacy.)

JEFF BERKOWITZ
— JANUARY 2005 FLASHBACK: During Chicago Left in Review’s episode a week before the Republican State Central Committee (“SCC”) election of a new Republican State GOP Chairman in Springfield on January 15, 2005 and during its shows that followed over the last two weeks after the election—the host and his panel chose to ignore the event. Not a mention– nothing, nada, zero, zip. The event attracted about 500 Republican activists, operatives, party functionaries, office holders and wannabees– including more than 150 County, Ward and Township Committeemen; State GOP Chairman candidates Andy McKenna, Jr., Steve McGlynn, Jim Oberweis, John Cox and Jim Nalepa. Andy McKenna, Jr., who is known for his father’s and perhaps his own fundraising prowess and business contacts and who ran in the Republican U. S. Senate Primary in 2004, garnering 14% and a 4th out of 7 candidates finish, won the State GOP chairmanship vote, primarily because of the backing of the Illinois Republican Party Finance Committee, i.e., in large part the Chicago Metropolitan Republican Business Interests and Donors. McGlynn, who had campaigned vigorously for the position, withdrew prior to the vote when he saw he could not get a majority of the SCC weighted vote. Nalepa, who drew acclaim and cheers from the assembled for his stirring speech, came in a very distant second to McKenna– who, in addition to the aforementioned money interests, had the New Republican Establishment behind him– Lahood-Kirk, for sure, and most likely Cross. Of course, the New Republican Establishment and money interests go together like ham and cheese.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Roulstone chose the Cassidy precinct north of Lake Stevens and east of Highway 9. Lake Cassidy is within its boundaries. In the Nov. 3 election, it had 654 registered voters, of whom 577 cast a ballot, according to results compiled by the county Auditor’s Office. Its voters strongly favored GOP candidates. Republican President Donald Trump won the precinct handily. He got 315 votes while Democratic candidate Joe Biden, now president-elect, received 234. Other presidential hopefuls garnered the remaining votes. In the gubernatorial contest, Republican Loren Culp performed even better, receiving 356 votes to incumbent Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee’s 211. The third recount is in the contest between Democrat April Berg and Republican Mark James for the seat now held by Rep. Jared Mead, D-Mill Creek. Mead did not seek re-election as he now serves on the Snohomish County Council. Berg won the election handily and will take office in January. But James won this precinct with 348 votes to her 193. Election workers pulled ballots for the precinct Thursday and Friday with a goal of getting under way Monday, said county Auditor Garth Fell. Roulstone must pay for the recounts, which he said will wind up costing around $3,500. This is not the first time he’s sought a limited recount. In 2018, he ran against state Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, in the 44th District and lost. Afterward, he requested votes be tallied again in two precincts.)

— Pressure Mounts on Biden to Make Diverse Picks for Top Posts President-elect Joe Biden is hearing from the diverse groups who supported his election. – AP (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, my superiors were always under tremendous pressure from Democrat politicians to hire, to retain, and to promote young Democrat minorities and young Democrat females. GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.)

— Facebook to rank anti-black hate speech over anti-white comments – Ebony Bowden (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats promote hatred against Republicans. Ever increasingly, Democrats call Republicans White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things. To call someone a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, or bigot in America today is like calling someone a Jew in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s.)
https://nypost.com/2020/12/04/facebooks-hate-speech-algorithm-to-prioritize-anti-black-comments/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook has updated its hate speech algorithm, reversing years of neutrality to prioritize anti-black comments while making anti-white slurs the lowest priority. The tech giant’s new system for detecting hate speech, known internally as the WoW Project, will automatically delete hateful language directed at the LGBTQ community, Jews, Muslims and African Americans — which has been dubbed by Facebook engineers as the “worst of the worst,” the Washington Post reported. The company will now begin scoring hate speech and offensive posts, and remarks about “men,” “whites” and “Americans” will be marked “low sensitivity,” the report said.)

If you seek a government office or a political office, expect that your critics/opponents will paint your parents as having been filthy rich. Neither of my outstanding parents attended college. My father fought type 1 diabetes from age 14, was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma, worked in the office of a nasty chemical plant in Chicago Heights, almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills, did not buy a new car until he was 45 and it was a bottom of the line 2-door Chevy, and died suddenly of heart failure in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21. https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20201201/recount-after-75-vote-difference-doesnt-stop-dupage-auditors-office-from-changing-hands
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new DuPage County auditor took office Tuesday for the first time in 12 years, but his election opponent says the historically close race isn’t over yet. Downers Grove Democrat William “Bill” White assumed the role as the county’s top financial watchdog even as his predecessor, Bob Grogan, prepares for “double overtime” in one of the tightest contests in the suburbs. Grogan has asked for a partial recount of the election results after coming up just 75 votes shy of victory out of more than 466,000 ballots cast. Grogan, a Downers Grove Republican who held the position for three terms, filed for a discovery recount in up to 25% of the precincts countywide. Wheaton Republican Tim Whelan also has requested a partial recount after falling short in his reelection bid for a seat on the forest preserve district board. Official results from last month’s election show Democratic challenger Jeff Gahris defeating Whelan by 718 votes. The recount proceedings are set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in the county administration building in Wheaton. Both Grogan and Whelan are represented by attorney Phillip Luetkehans. The exploratory process leaves some uncertainty over races that add to historic gains for Democrats in DuPage. In a partial recount, the county clerk’s office will make election materials available for scrutiny to help candidates determine if there are enough voter discrepancies to seek a court order for a complete recount. Pat Bond, the attorney for the county clerk’s office, said county election officials have had roughly 30 discovery recounts over the past 20 years, but none resulted in a full recount. Election authorities anticipate the partial recounts could be done by Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the earliest, Bond said. Grogan already has put out an appeal for donations if he should decide to forge ahead with a legal challenge. “I have confidence that assuming that we find a critical mass of differences that we’ll be able to fund the full recount if we can get there past the judge,” Grogan said. He’s cautiously hopeful as he prepares for an examination of ballots next week. “Auditors know what to look for, but they don’t know what the results are of what they look for until they’ve done it,” Grogan said Tuesday. “So I’m objective. I have an open mind. I am hopeful, but honestly, mistakes go both directions.”)

Rather than help the lawsuit succeed, virtually all the members of the class in GAO’s Chicago office “cut deals” with my GAO superiors. https://www.wglt.org/post/ex-spokesperson-sues-mclean-county-alleging-race-discrimination#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Dion McNeal was the county’s communications specialist and one of the most public voices in its initial COVID-19 response last spring. McNeal, who is Black, was involved in a dispute over a county press release and social media post in June—just after the killing of George Floyd—that linked the trauma of racism and police brutality with public health. McNeal says that put him at odds with some county officials. He then went to the media with his concerns, in which he pointed to a lack of Black leadership in the county’s health department. He says he was fired a few days later. . .So on June 10, McNeal sent out the original version of the press release. The next day, McNeal was told he would have multiple job duties removed, according to the lawsuit. McNeal says he faced “severe adverse employment actions,” in contrast with a white co-worker who also sent a letter to the media June 19 raising concerns about the lack of diversity in the health department. That white co-worker was treated more favorably, the lawsuit claims. McNeal also claims sex discrimination. McNeal has identified himself as a “proud healthy Black queer HIV positive man.” “Similarly situated female employees … did not suffer the same adverse employment action McNeal did and, therefore, were treated more favorably,” his lawsuit reads. McNeal’s accusation of unlawful retaliation is based on how the county and health department reacted to him going public in his June 19 statement. McNeal claims he was “speaking as a public citizen on a matter of public concern and was engaged in activity protected by First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.” “McNeal suffered several adverse actions and deprivations likely to deter his protected activity, including without limitation, increased job scrutiny, placement on administrative leave, placement on a performance improvement plan, and termination of employment,” the lawsuit reads. “McNeal’s legally protected activity was at least a motivating factor in the defendants’ decision to impose the deprivations.”)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/12/01/trump-repeal-section-230-ndaa/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Section 230 is a broad, decades-old federal law that spares a wide array of sites and services from being held liable for the content posted by their users — and, in the process, the decisions about the posts, photos and videos that tech companies take down or leave online. It is considered one of the Web’s foundational laws, crafted in large part to facilitate free expression digitally. Many lawmakers — Democrats and Republicans — increasingly have come to question whether the protections are outdated, conferring legal immunity on tech giants at a time when they have failed to crack down on hate speech, election disinformation and other harmful content online. But Trump and his Republican allies have seized on the debate to advance their arguments that Facebook, Google, Twitter and others should be penalized for exhibiting systemic political bias against conservatives — a charge for which they have provided scant evidence, and one that tech giants long have denied.)

https://ktrh.iheart.com/content/2020-11-30-conservative-censorship-continues/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you thought that ‘Big Tech’ was going to back off of its conservative censorship now that the election is over? You were wrong! As documented in the New York Times! of all places, Facebook & CEO Mark Zuckerberg are actually doing more to censor news outlets and people that they don’t agree with. It’s done with a ‘secret ranking system’ that allows CNN and others to be seen, while conservative outlets and posts are restricted. Taking it one step, Facebook is also blocking individual posts (aka freedom of speech) under the guise that they use to rationalize ‘people that are bad for the world’. Scary but true according to media analyst Bryan Preston, who told KTRH “What they’re censoring are stories that they don’t like, that report facts that they don’t want people to see. That is extremely chilling! and given the power that Facebook has over our view of reality now, this cannot stand.” And while Preston believes that Facebook and the other Big Tech companies will have it much easier under Biden, the fight will continue. Who would have thought we would be talking about free speech in 2020? Scary, but true.)
