(FROM THE ARTICLE: Newspapers distributed recently in Will and DuPage counties are actually political mailings funded by radio show host Dan Proft and Gov. Bruce Rauner. According to 49th District State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, who issued a news release warning residents, Proft and Rauner fund the papers through the Liberty Principles PAC. Proft is chairman and treasurer of the Illinois Liberty Principles PAC. Proft, who hosts a radio show on AM 560 with Amy Jacobson, has long been a behind-the-scenes guy in Republican politics, working on Senate campaigns for Jack Ryan and Alan Keyes, gubernatorial campaigns for Patrick O’Malley and Steven Rauschenberger, and for several Republican municipal officials. Proft ran for governor himself in the 2010 GOP primary. The papers, as listed by the Illinois Press Association, are Chambana Sun, DuPage Policy Journal, East Central Reporter, Kankakee Times, Lake County Gazette, McHenry Times, Metro East Sun, North Cook News, Rock Island Today, Sangamon Sun, SW Illinois News, West Central Reporter and West Cook News. Not included in the IPA’s list is the Will County Gazette, but its website is nearly identical in layout and design to the other papers’ websites. It also lists the same publisher, Locality Labs. The IPA issued a statement saying the papers are not members of the association, nor are they eligible for inclusion: Obviously, the IPA respects the First Amendment protections of freedom of speech and freedom of the press which allows each of us the right to speak freely, and publish newspapers or newsletters if we wish. While imitation is the highest form of flattery, the IPA cautions readers to become as news literate as possible; that is, to try to determine the source behind the news and information they receive and to question the legitimacy, integrity and intent of both the source and the message. “I echo the IPA’s warning that everyone who receives these publications seriously question their integrity,” said Bertino-Tarrant in a news release. “This is not about the First Amendment, this is about a super PAC going to extreme lengths to mislead people in order to push a political agenda.” The network of fake papers were found by the Illinois State Board of Elections to be in violation of the Campaign Disclosure Act for not including “paid for” attributions and in violation of Illinois law that prohibits Independent Expenditure PACs from colluding with candidates for the newspapers’ interviews with single-party candidates, Bertino-Tarrant said. “Despite the Board’s rulings, the fake papers continue to conduct interviews with candidates and multiple print editions of the papers, including The Will County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal, fail to list a ‘paid for,’” she said. Locality Labs is reportedly run by Brian Timpone, who did not return a phone message seeking information on the newspapers. Emails sent to the Will County Gazette and the DuPage Policy Journal were not returned. The websites do not list a phone number. Timpone previously ran Journatic, which was fired by the Chicago Tribune for plagiarism and using fake bylines, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. Will County Republican State Senate Candidate Michelle Smith has appeared in the Will County Gazette and the DuPage Policy Journal numerous times, according to Bertino-Tarrant. Smith’s campaign spokesman, Jack DeMeulenaere, said it’s important to reach out directly to voters. “Which is why our campaign conducts interviews with a variety of news organizations and citizens groups, in compliance with election laws,” he said in an email to Patch. Bertino-Tarrant is asking all candidates to sever any communications with the papers. “Voters deserve integrity with their news, not political propaganda masquerading as news,” she said in a news release.)

Somehow, that was deemed an adequate response. And now, a left-wing David Duke of the most extreme variety has endorsed Mrs. Clinton. Yet it has neither raised the hackles of the media nor resulted in demands that her campaign explain or denounce the endorsement. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Members of the movement to free the delegates from presidential candidate Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention failed, but their efforts haven’t completely subsided. In email and phone calls to supporters of the anti-Trump movement, the group Free the Delegates has its sights set on another way to replace Trump as the party’s nominee — by invoking Republican National Committee rules that would allow members to replace the nominee aside from just “death, declination or otherwise” beginning with a written petition that includes signatures of at least 16 RNC members from 16 states. The group’s executive director, Regina Thompson, said that the effort was still “a work in progress like anything else of this nature is.” “This is the only avenue left within the RNC rules,” Thompson said in an interview with TheBlaze. “We’re committed to working within the Republican Party process and this is the next step — and only step — left within the rules to change the nominee.” The free-the-delegates movement has placed emphasis on the RNC rules that allow for it to fill “vacancies which may occur by reason of death, declination, or otherwise” — with the “otherwise” clause serving as their catalyst. And in order to try to recall and replace Trump, they must get the RNC to hold a meeting by submitting a written petition with at least 16 committee members’ signatures from at least 16 states. Thompson told TheBlaze that the group’s request and petition have been emailed to almost every RNC member and that the group is now in the process of following up with those members. William Kunkler, a private equity executive who backed Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination, said he wasn’t voting for the GOP nominee and expected Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would become president and move quickly to push immigration changes. “Republicans will be licking their wounds after the effects of Trump leading the ticket and should be willing to deal with (Clinton) on sensible reform,” Kunkler, co-chair of the Illinois Business Immigration Council, said at a panel hosted by the group and FWD.us, the immigration advocacy organization founded by Facebook Chairman Mark Zuckerberg. Kunkler — who backed and helped bundle campaign cash for previous GOP nominees including Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. She proved that again last week with her assertion on Fox News Sunday that James Comey, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, had declared her to be truthful in her answers about her decision to use a private email server for official State Department business — a grossly misleading interpretation of an F.B.I. report that pointed up various falsehoods in her public explanations. And, most broadly, it upsets balance, that idealistic form of journalism with a capital “J” we’ve been trained to always strive for. But let’s face it: Balance has been on vacation since Mr. Trump stepped onto his golden Trump Tower escalator last year to announce his candidacy. For the primaries and caucuses, the imbalance played to his advantage, captured by the killer statistic of the season: His nearly $2 billion in free media was more than six times as much as that of his closest Republican rival. Now that he is the Republican nominee for president, the imbalance is cutting against him. Journalists and commentators are analyzing his policy pronouncements and temperament with an eye toward what it would all look like in the Oval Office — something so many of them viewed as an impossibility for so long.)

Previously, those convicted of marijuana possession faced possible jail time; now, just a citation and a fine. This reminds us of an age-old admonition: “Just because you can do something, it doesn’t mean you necessarily should.”  Critics of this more liberal (or libertarian, depending upon your political persuasion) policy toward marijuana have reason to worry. As reported by the New England Journal of Medicine, there is an inverse correlation between the perceived risk of marijuana and the incidence of people’s use of it. Simply put, the less risky people view marijuana, the more likely they are to use — and abuse — it. For some, decriminalization may be perceived as a tacit governmental endorsement of certain activities — including smoking pot. This moral dilemma is heightened when the government stands to profit from the behavior in question. Like sales taxes generated from marijuana sales in Colorado and Washington, for example. Since those states have legalized recreational marijuana use, the perception of its risk has lessened, and the amount of its use has increased proportionately. So, too, have vehicular fatalities related to marijuana use. According to research conducted by AAA, marijuana-related traffic deaths in Washington state have doubled since pot was legalized there. There are other reasons for concern. To begin, marijuana growers have continually bred marijuana to increase its potency. Today, the amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (“THC”) – i.e., the psychoactive component — has increased by 22 times compared with marijuana strains that were available in the 1960s. Although often considered to be benign, the New England Journal of Medicine has identified serious negative impacts of marijuana use on brain functioning. These include reduced neural connectivity and damage to areas of the brain such as the frontal cortex, parietal lobe, and temporal lobe. In turn, that damage results in a broad range of neural dysfunction: everything from problem-solving to the understanding and expression of emotions become impaired. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that marijuana use is highly correlated to underperformance at both school and work. Marijuana users experience higher dropout rates and lower academic achievement. On the job, they are responsible for a disproportionate number of workers’ compensation claims, along with absenteeism and lost productivity. Marijuana advocates often argue that it is not addictive. Research indicates otherwise. As reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, about 9 percent of people who experiment with marijuana will become addicted to it. In our American culture, we laugh when Hollywood lampoons potheads in movies such as “Pineapple Express” and “Dude, Where’s My Car?” But, at The Abbey Addiction Treatment Center in Bettendorf, we see the faces of marijuana addicts first hand. And it’s not funny. We see people who struggle with simple tasks at school and work. People incapable of perceiving or expressing emotion. People who suffer from higher incidence of mental health diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, paranoia, and anxiety. While we have great success in helping our patients to recover from their addictions, we can’t help but remind the public that the best way to mitigate certain public health risks is to avoid the factors that cause them in the first place. Put another way, just because you can use marijuana, it doesn’t mean you necessarily should.)
