CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD EDITORIAL WITH BIG COLOR PICTURE UNETHICALLY MADE TO LOOK LIKE A NEWS ARTICLE: DIERSEN HEADLINE: Ever-increasingly, the Chicago Tribune sides with foreign countries and their citizens against America and its citizens and encourages people a) to come to America, Illinois, Cook County, and Chicago illegally, b) to stay in America, Illinois, Cook County, and Chicago illegally, and c) to bring others to America, Illinois, Cook County, and Chicago illegally.  The aforesaid is treasonous.

— Estimating the Chicago area’s undocumented immigrant population – Tribune graphics  (DIERSEN: How many illegals live in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois?  According to this article, 511,000 live in Illinois and of that number, 184,000 live in Chicago, 124,000 live in the rest of Cook County, 43,000 live in Kane County, 39,000 live in Lake County, 36,000 live in DuPage County, and 22,000 live in Will County. 89% of the aforesaid are 18 or older.  How many of the aforesaid used their false identifications to vote for Clinton and the other Democrat candidates in the November 8, 2016 election?)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-workplace-under-trump-0103-biz-20170103-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: OUTSTANDING: E-Verify. A chief rallying cry of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign involved limiting immigration to boost employment among native-born Americans, and a position paper outlining how he would do that includes mandating E-Verify nationwide to keep employers from hiring those in the country without legal permission. E-Verify, a system for employers to electronically check a new hire’s identity information against government databases before permitting them to work, has been required of federal contractors and vendors since 2007. Some states require public or private employers to use the system; Illinois does not. Critics of E-Verify raise concerns about privacy, implementation burdens and inaccuracies that keep legal immigrants from working.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170102/business/301029908/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 1. YOUR WEALTH RATIO  A wealth ratio is a measure of how effectively you’ve converted your lifetime income into wealth. . .2. YOUR OVERHEAD RATIO  How much of your after-tax income is eaten up by basic, must-have expenses? If you’re having trouble making ends meet, calculating your overhead ratio can help explain why. It also can be handy to know when you’re determining if you can afford new loan payments or how much to save in an emergency fund. . .3. YOUR TAX RATES  Your tax bracket doesn’t reveal the amount of taxes paid on your total income. Instead, the bracket (also called the marginal tax rate) reflects how much Uncle Sam claimed of the last dollar you earned. If you’re a single filer in the 25 percent federal tax bracket, the first $9,275 of your 2016 taxable income is taxed at the 10 percent rate, the next $28,375 at 15 percent and the amount above $37,650 at 25 percent.)

DNA INFO
— See How Chicago Has Grown Since 1830 — And What It Could Look Like in 2030 – Justin Breen  (DIRSEN: How long have you and your ancestors lived in northeast Illinois?  During the 1840s and 1850s, all my ancestors immigrated to northeast Illinois from what is now Germany. On my father’s side, in 1844, my great great grandfather immigrated to Chicago and worked in a brick factory. In 1854, he homesteaded a farm in southeast Crete Township.  In 1864, he bought 10 acres in northeast Crete and he and my great grandfather began operating Crete’s only hardware store at the northeast intersection of Main and Exchange; tragically, in 1966, the building was torn down and the land sold.  In 1902, my great grandfather had the 1285 Main Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres; it is one of Crete’s landmark homes; tragically, it was sold during the 1940s.  In 1926, my grandfather had 1286 Wood Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres. Between 1948 and 1954, my father, my mother, and I lived in an apartment above the aforesaid hardware store.  In 1954, my father, my mother, my brother, and I moved into the 1286 Wood Street home.  My father lived there until he died suddenly in 1969.  My mother lived there until she died last year.  I lived there until 1972.  My bother continues to live there.)

The most important part of my annual speech to the City Club of Chicago isn’t the speech, it’s the effort attendees make on behalf of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois’ vital early childhood programs. We ask that audience members bring toys to the event, and this year people brought 106 toys, along with $235 in gift cards and $601 in cash. That cash haul seems a bit lower than in the past, but the good folks at LSSI also told me today that online contributions are still coming in, so click here if you weren’t able to attend, or if you forgot to bring a toy with you yesterday. http://thehill.com/homenews/media/311116-liberal-media-enjoys-post-trump-election-boom
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump’s November victory has been a boom for liberal news outlets, which are getting big business from voters shocked by the billionaire’s surprise win over Hillary Clinton. Instead of wallowing in despair, left-leaning voters are buying subscriptions to The New York Times and Vanity Fair while tuning in to television programs with a liberal slant. “We’ve seen weeks of 10 times the subscription adds that we saw in the same period last year,” Times CEO Mark Thompson said at the Dec. 5 UBS Global Media and Communications Conference. Attacks by Trump on the Times have been frequent, but don’t appear to have hurt the publication. The Times has exceeded 200,000 new digital-only subscriptions during the fourth quarter alone, Thompson said. “We’re seeing … a surge and I would say more broadly that we expect the lively news cycle to continue in America well into 2017,” he added. he Washington Post, which like the Times has been attacked by Trump, reported 99.1 million unique visitors in November 2016, according to comScore, a global media measurement and analytics company. The number of unique visitors to WashingtonPost.com marks a 38 percent increase over last year. Liberal commentators have called on people to subscribe to such publications, in part as a response to “fake news” stories that some blamed for the election result.)

OBSERVER
— The Top 5 Reasons Headhunters Aren’t Reaching Out to You – Keith Liscio
http://observer.com/2016/12/the-top-5-reasons-headhunters-arent-reaching-out-to-you/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You have the wrong experience  This is probably the hardest obstacle to overcome both from a qualitative and quantitative standpoint. Recruiters are generally highly specialized in what we do and, remember, we’re putting round pegs in round holes. If you are a square peg, it is unlikely that a round peg recruiter can help you. If you are a round peg of the wrong diameter, there are some searches you’ll be excluded from. For instance, recruiters are very rarely hired to bring in entry level employees. Because the pool of talent is generally large for these positions and recruiters are not inexpensive, most businesses choose to fill these slots through campus recruiting, advertisements and the resumes they receive unsolicited. It also means that for certain oversubscribed college fields of study like psychology, sociology, or history, graduates may never be in a position to be helped by the services of a recruiter in obtaining a job in their chosen major. Generally speaking, recruiters start being helpful to younger workers once they have two to three years of experience in a given field—but only to move to another company within that same field. So, for instance, if a candidate excels in engineering (or accounting, or marketing) at their current company, recruiters will be interested in taking them to engineering (or accounting, or marketing) roles at other companies. Recruiters are paid to find people who have specific experience. For example, marketing means marketing to a recruiter. While sales people sometimes move into marketing roles on their own, it is rare that a company will pay a recruiter to find them a sales person that they’ll hire for a marketing position. By the same token, companies use recruiters to hire client-side employees for client-side roles and agency-side people for agency roles. Employees switch on their own from agencies to clients and vice-versa all the time. It is also common for employees to move from a specific function in one industry to the same function in another industry. When using a recruiter to find an employee for a specific role, however, firms may require that the industry experience more closely match their own. You have a non-linear career path  It is very common in today’s workplace for employees—even good ones—to change jobs more frequently and switch functions and industries with greater regularity. However, companies generally won’t pay a recruiter to find somebody like that. Say I’m hired to fill the job of Chief Cook and Bottle Washer for a client. Ideally, they’d like to see somebody who had a part-time job washing bottles in high school, graduated from culinary school with a degree in cooking, and moved on to progressively more responsible positions such as Cook and Bottle Washer Assistant, Associate Cook and Bottle Washer, Cook and Bottle Washing Manager, Director of Cooking and Bottle Washing, before culminating as Vice President of Cooking and Bottle Washing. In fact, some may require that I only target those that have not only done all that but are already serving as Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at another firm. It is sometimes difficult to meet all of a client’s expectations on any given position. Depending on the nature of the job and the client, however, we do usually come remarkably close. The higher up the chain you are in your career, the more closely my clients will want you to have very specific experiences. If you’ve come to your job as Director of Cooking and Bottle Washing by a more circuitous route, the client who’s hired me to fill that job as Chief may not want to meet you.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to new research from Pew Research, there are eight million illegal immigrants working or looking for work in the U.S., totaling five percent of the U.S. work force and the vast majority of the over 11 million illegal immigrants commonly estimated to be in the nation. While many of those immigrants pay taxes, there is a net cost to taxpayers of tens of billions of dollars per year, according to fluctuating estimates. Many of these costs are borne by state and local governments. Building an expensive wall won’t force any illegal immigrants, about 40 percent of whom have overstayed their visas after legally crossing our borders, to leave the country. Enacting an effective E-Verify program enforced by fining businesses who hire illegal immigrants would, by removing the financial incentive of employment. Likewise, Congress and Trump can simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars and remove at least some of the financial and legal protections provided to illegal immigrants by pulling funding from more than 200 sanctuary cities that refuse to work with federal customs officials.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Once thought a sure way to block illegals, the federal web-based E-Verify system was supposed to allow “businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.” It doesn’t really. “We’ve got to talk about E-Verify,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “People come here for jobs. Reducing the power of that magnet reduces the cost of securing the border.” E-Verify now is riddled with holes. Even the official Department of Homeland Security website bears this proviso: “E-Verify does not provide your employer with any immigration, citizenship status or document information about you.” “A more effective system is more expensive,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “You have to check more databases to authenticate the identity of the person who presents a card. A truly comprehensive E-Verify burdens small businesses financially, but if you exempt businesses that employ fewer than 50 people, you leave the door open to fraud.”)

— The Post-Familial Election  How the thinning out of families created fertile ground for Trump. – Ross Douthat  (DIERSEN: How is your family tree doing?  How many children did you and your spouse have, did your parents have, and did your grandparents have?  My wife and I gave up trying to have children, my parents had two children, my grandparents on my father’s side had two children and my grandparents on my mother’s side had four children.  My brother and my father’s sister never married and had no children.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/06/opinion/sunday/the-post-familial-election.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So instead of widening, my family tree tapered, its branches thinned. And it may thin again, since so far the seven cousins in my generation have only three children. All of them are mine. This is a very normal Western family history. Everywhere across the developed world, families have grown more attenuated: fewer and later marriages, fewer and later-born children, fewer brothers and sisters and cousins, more people living for longer and longer stretches on their own. It’s a new model of social life, a “post-familial” revolution that’s unique to late modernity. For a while, conservatives have worried that this revolution is a boon to liberalism, to centralization and bureaucratic control — because as families thin people are more likely to look to politics for community and government for protection. This idea is borne out in voting patterns, where marriage and kids tend to predict Republican affiliation, and the single and divorced are often reliable Democratic partisans. The Obama White House’s “Life of Julia” ad campaign in 2012 — featuring a woman whose every choice was subsidized by the government from cradle to grave, with a lone child but no larger family or community in sight — seemed to many conservatives like a perfect confirmation of our fears: Here was liberalism explicitly pitching the state as a substitute for kith and kin. But while we worried about the liberal vision, our own ideological side was adapting to the family’s attenuation in darker ways — speaking not to singletons or single mothers, but to powerful post-familial anxieties among the middle-aged and old.)

LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL
— The real national embarrassment – Robert Samuelson
http://www.reviewjournal.com/the-real-national-embarrassment
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All this suggests an obvious immigration agenda.  First, we need to reduce illegal immigrants, both because illegality is bad in its own right and because the constant inflow frustrates assimilation. To further discourage illegal immigration, we should make E-Verify — a system for employers to check the immigration status of job applicants — mandatory for most businesses. We also need to legalize the vast majority of undocumented workers who have been here for years and don’t have a criminal record. Finally, we need to reform legal immigration so that it favors the entry of high-skilled workers, who aid the economy and assimilate more easily.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Five years ago, the sociologist Arlie Hochschild set out to better understand what she called the “deep story” of the mostly white, mostly downwardly mobile Americans who made up the fervent constituency of the Tea Party, and now of Donald Trump. These are the people who ostensibly vote against their economic self-interests, as Thomas Frank contended more than a decade ago in What’s the Matter with Kansas? Subsequently, to get 3 years of full-time CSRS credit even though I had only worked part-time for the Park Forest Post Office, I paid CSRS 7% of what the Post Office paid me 1966-1969 plus interest.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Baby Boomers Blew It  We Baby Boomers did fail when planning for our financial future, but part of the problem is that our future is being prolonged. We are living longer and therefore outliving our resources. In 1900, the average lifespan was 47 years. Today, AARP reports that a 65-year old is expected to be able to blow out their birthday candles at 85 years of age. Wow, get out and enjoy your retirement. This is great news unless you happen to be an average American, between the age of 55 and 64, who has only accrued $104,000 in retirement savings, according to the June 2015 Government Accountability Office. To sum this up, a longer life span means that 47 percent of the oldest Baby Boomers are at risk of not having enough money for retirement, as reported by Employee Benefit Research Institute. Options are scary. Keep working? Live with the kids? Your choices get limited. We Baby Boomers have not set a great example for the Gen Z’ers who are just getting out of school, entering the workforce and trying to design their own financial futures.)

— Qualified for comptroller – Ryan Mahoney, Belleville  (DIERSEN: Of course, obviously, needless-to-say, and without question, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I have never been qualified to do anything.  In my defense, I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels (currently $77,899-$88,286) and for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels (currently $92,632-$120,427). I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981. I became a licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and a Forensic Accountant in 1997.  I earned a bachelor’s degree in management in 1970, an MBA in 1976, a master’s degree in accounting in 1980, and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading in 1997.  I served on the Executive Committee of the Association of Government Accountants Chicago Chapter 1983-1996.)

(FROM THE LETTER: In the midst of the national campaign, we must not forget the elections closer to home that impact us. One such office is that of the state comptroller. This is a position of great importance given the mismanagement and financial state we are in. The comptroller is in essence the state’s head accountant, and neither of the major parties candidates running have any accounting experience. In fact, the state of Illinois has never had an accountant elected to this office. This year, that could change. The most qualified candidate is Libertarian Claire Ball. She has real world experience with both a bachelors and masters degree in accounting, and has received her CPA. Claire Ball has presented a comprehensive plan for accountability and transparency for the office. Claire Ball has also called attention to the payments of lobbyists ahead of social services that close by the day. What Claire Ball won’t be, is beholden to a party instead of the people. She has neither Rauner or Madigan to answer to. Claire Ball can perform arithmetic that the incumbent recently had difficulty with. Claire Ball will also not be using the office as a stepping stone as have the two major parties done in the past. This Nov. 8, vote for the most qualified and capable candidate. The state of Illinois’ finances can not continue under the tenure of the parties who have so badly damaged it. Vote for Libertarian Claire Ball.)

http://www.starcourier.com/news/20161101/sen-weaver-named-to-advisory-council-on-at-risk-students
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Sen. Chuck Weaver (R-Peoria) has been appointed to the Illinois General Assembly’s Advisory Council on At Risk Students, a panel charged with finding ways to improve educational opportunities and access for disadvantaged students. “A student’s education lays the foundation for the future success in life, which is why it’s so important that we make sure all of our students have the best possible access to education,” said Senator Weaver. “This council will allow us to continually work to find new ways to help our most at-risk students succeed.” The Advisory Council on At Risk Students is made up of 20 members, most members are education and human service professionals. The Republican leader in the Senate was allowed to select one person to serve on the council and she selected Senator Weaver. The council will file an annual report with the General Assembly to recommend changes to be implemented. Sen. Weaver, whose district includes the Kewanee area, has long worked as an advocate for students and disadvantaged children, as a past president of the Youth Farm in Peoria where he served on the board for 28 years. He was involved in merging Youth Farm with the Childrens Home, one of Illinois’ premier providers for at risk children. “We have some serious challenges to face with our educational system, but I’m truly excited at the opportunity to work toward ensuring a quality education for every student,” said Weaver.)

— University of Texas student government wants to ‘disband’ Young Conservatives for ‘hate-filled’ bake sale  (DIERSEN: Under the Democrats and under the RINOs, ever-increasingly, you are viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned if you do not promote Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion, that is, if you do not promote discrimination against Whites and against men.)
http://www.thecollegefix.com/post/29750/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Administration: Sorry, it’s ‘protected speech’  The University of Texas-Austin has pledged to ignore demands from student officials to “disband” a conservative student group following its satirical “affirmative action bake sale” last week. Several Student Government (SG) representatives filed a resolution against Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) that also called for the administration to punish and even expel students who commit “future incidents of bias.” Without referring to the resolution, YCT sent a legal threat letter to UT President Gregory Fenves. It said the group would sue UT if it took “punitive action” against YCT for its speech, citing a federal law that allows lawsuits against public officials for retaliating against or chilling protected speech. A university spokesman told The College Fix in an email Tuesday night that won’t happen, because UT “does not and will not take action against an organization for protected speech.” ‘More of a movement’ than actual legislation  At an SG assembly meeting Tuesday night, shortly after the university said it wouldn’t punish YCT, representatives nonetheless voted to “fast track” the resolution, known as AR-15, The Daily Texan reported. Debate was extended at the unusually lengthy meeting, according to the Daily. President Kevin Helgren said YCT’s bake sale was “hate-filled” but emphasized that the university could choose to ignore an approved resolution. Co-author and co-sponsor Priya Suri said the resolution was “more of a movement and a statement that we stand in solidarity with people of color and people who were emotionally affected” by the bake sale. The outcry against YCT’s bake sale started with a student petition that alleged the cheeky demonstration against racial preferences – which was partly led by a black student – was a “hate crime.” It had 860 signatures as of Tuesday night. The new petition was followed by the SG resolution, which has seven sponsors and 12 authors. Two authors work in the Multicultural Engagement Center, though neither is listed as full-time staff – Cameron Maxwell, director of external relations for African American Affairs, and Alejandrina Guzman, director of Latino Leadership Summit for Latino Community Affairs. It’s not the first petition to try to kill YCT at UT for a political demonstration – three years ago, more than 5,000 people signed a similar petition. The resolution is dripping with contempt for what it characterizes as UT’s hands-off approach to offensive campus speech. It cites the bake sale; a Feb. 20 incident where white UT students allegedly threw bottles and yelled a racial slur at a black student; Phi Gamma Delta’s 2015 “border patrol” party, which was investigated by the dean of students; and the cause of the prior petition, YCT’s planned “Catch an Illegal Immigrant” game (canceled due to “safety concerns“), among other incidents. The resolution says UT took “no punitive action” against “identifiable university-associated perpetrators” in most of the incidents. It suggests that UT should punish students when their actions provoke “large-scale protests and outrage.”)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161026/news/161028967/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Responding to a court order, Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41 has released emails from leaders of its teachers union that show they were working last spring to create a special committee to vet school board candidates about a year before the April 2017 election. A DuPage County judge ruled that the emails were public records and ordered the district to turn over the messages to Jeff Cooper, a former school board candidate who filed a lawsuit in June accusing the district of violating state public records laws. Cooper sued after the district denied his request for the emails under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. . .The judge also ordered the district to pay Cooper’s attorney $5,600 in fees and $362.84 in other costs by Nov. 22. The district expects to spend “about the same amount” in attorney fees and costs as it’s paying Cooper’s lawyer. Cooper said Wednesday the emails “should have never been withheld in the first place.”  He has not decided whether he will make another bid at a seat on the board in April.)

— Democrats Ask Judge To Sanction Republicans Over Trump  The RNC said the filing was completely meritless. – Reuters
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/democrats-ask-judge-to-sanction-republicans-over-trump_us_58115d36e4b0990edc2f2c74
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic National Committee on Wednesday asked a U.S. judge to hold the Republican National Committee in contempt of court over allegations that Donald Trump encouraged his supporters to intimidate minority voters. The DNC accused Republicans in a court filing of violating a longstanding consent decree, which restricts Republicans’ ability to question voters at the polls and prevent those people from casting a ballot. During the presidential campaign, Republican nominee Trump has asked followers to “watch” for fraud in the Nov. 8 presidential election in certain areas where minority voters reside, even though no evidence of fraud exists, the filing said. Some of Trump’s followers have pledged to do just that, the filing said. The RNC has supported Trump’s “ballot security endeavors,” Democrats said in the court filing. The RNC said the filing was completely meritless. “The RNC strictly abides by the consent decree and does not take part directly or indirectly in any efforts to prevent or remedy vote fraud.  Nor do we coordinate with the Trump campaign or any other campaign or party organization in any efforts they may make in this area,” a RNC spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “The RNC remains focused on getting out the vote.” Representatives for the Trump campaign could not immediately be reached for comment. The DNC asked a New Jersey federal judge to issue an injunction preventing the RNC from spending money on voter integrity efforts, and to instruct its field offices that no employee shall participate in any ballot security measures.)

https://www.adn.com/nation-world/2016/10/26/clubs-affirmative-action-bake-sale-at-university-of-texas-draws-hundreds-of-angry-students/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The bake sale, which club members characterized as a protest against the “institutionalized racism” of affirmative action programs at colleges and universities, soon attracted a crowd of hundreds who lobbed criticism at the conservative students. “Check your privilege!” they yelled as the club’s remaining members volleyed questions from the crowd. The crowd began to disperse just after 2 p.m. when the remaining members of the group left to chants of “racists go home!” The UT-Austin student newspaper The Daily Texan broadcast live from the event. “Our protest was designed to highlight the insanity of assigning our lives value based on our race and ethnicity, rather than our talents, work ethic and intelligence,” said club chairman Vidal Castaneda. “It is insane that institutional racism, such as affirmative action, continues to allow for universities to judge me by the color of my skin rather than my actions.” The same club came under fire in 2013 for holding a nearly identical bake sale — charging different races different prices for brownies. Gregory J. Vincent, UT-Austin’s vice president for diversity and community engagement, called that bake sale “deplorable.” Vincent again spoke for the university on Wednesday, calling the latest bake sale “inflammatory and demeaning.” “Yet focusing our attention on the provocative nature of the YCT’s actions ignores a much more important issue: They create an environment of exclusion and disrespect among our students, faculty and staff,” he said. Vincent acknowledged that the school’s West Mall, where the bake sale was held, is an area where protests often take place and where free speech and the expression of diverse opinions on myriad issues is encouraged. But, while it was “their right” to hold the bake sale, he questioned whether the group’s methods furthered the dialogue about race and privilege or simply sought to divide the campus along racial lines.)

MONEY MAGAZINRE
— Why Goldman Sachs Only Fires a Few People at a Time – Martha C. White  (DIERSEN: All during the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO 1980-1997, a) the agency was under hiring and/or promotion freezes, b) the agency suffered budget cuts in either relative or absolute terms, and c) the agency shrank from more than 6,000 employees in 1980 to less than 3,000 employees in 1997.)
http://time.com/money/4546249/goldman-sachs-firing/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Goldman Sachs has laid off 443 people this year, but the investment bank has kept its job cuts under the radar by letting people go by the dozens rather than the hundreds, which keeps it from having to notify regulators of “mass layoffs.”  Goldman Sachs has disclosed to state regulators seven different instances of job cuts this year, Bloomberg reports. New York state law requires that companies file a notice with the state when they cut jobs in many circumstances, and if those job cuts total 250 or more, they have to notify the state of “mass layoffs.” Although Goldman Sachs has shed the highest number of employees this year since 2008, when it laid off 900 during an economically punishing year, 2016’s reductions in head count have gone largely unnoticed. When banks, especially high-profile ones like Goldman Sachs, downsize the number of people they employ, it can send a signal to investors and to the market about how they’re doing and if they’re struggling. Keeping job cuts low-key avoids the negative connotation a big layoff suggests, Jeanne Branthover, a partner at DHR International, an executive search firm, told Bloomberg. “This is more, ‘We’re having layoffs and we don’t want to explain it,’” she said. Of course, there are strategic business reasons to cut jobs a few at a time: If business in a particular area rebounds quickly, it is easier for a company to add back a smaller number of employees than to try and re-staff a gutted department.)

The most that I ever earned in today’s dollars was a lousy $120,427 a year.  Of course, needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes use that to demonize me, to denigrate me, and to condemn me as being a failed loser and even worse things.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20161013/NEWS04/161019898/would-you-be-unhappy-with-780000-a-year
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The average total compensation for partners at Chicago law firms increased 13 percent in the last two years to $780,000, according to a new study. The growth rate eclipsed New York, where partners in the country’s largest legal market averaged $1.7 million annually, but compensation only went up 5 percent from 2014. By contrast, partners in San Francisco saw their comp shoot up 51 percent to $997,000, according to the report from New York-based legal recruiters Major Lindsey & Africa. The survey sample included more than 2,100 partners from across the country, with 244 from Chicago. The survey only went to lawyers practicing at the country’s largest firms; approximately 8,600 of Cook County’s more than 45,000 lawyers work at such operations. The city’s partners had the 10th highest average compensation among the 14 legal markets ranked by the headhunting firm. Growth in compensation has slowed since the last time the firm conducted the survey: Between 2012 and 2014, comp for the city’s senior lawyers grew nearly 20 percent from $575,000. Chicago’s lower compensation average may stem from the city’s historic practice of making lawyers partner at a younger age, said Jeffrey Lowe, the Washington D.C.-based author of the study. More of the partners taking the survey in Chicago are likely billing at the same rates as associates elsewhere in the country. Chicago’s billing rates, too, are a comparative bargain compared to the rest of the country. Partners in Chicago on average billed at $687 per hour. Only Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, Miami and “other” markets had lower rates. Just over a quarter of Chicago’s partners rated themselves as either “not at all” or “not very” satisfied with their compensation.)

http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/2016/10/12/group-home-for-young-mothers-proposed-for-former-wheaton-inn/a8390an/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A group home for new and expectant single mothers is being proposed for the former Wheaton Inn building at 301 W. Roosevelt Road in Wheaton. The Clarendon Hills-based company Love From Above Inc. has a contract to purchase the building from its current owner, PCM Properties LLC, a subsidiary of Invesco PowerShares. The group is set to close on the property in December. Love From Above plans to offer a two-year transitional housing program for women who find themselves in “crisis pregnancies,” said Yvonne Florczak-Seeman, president and founder of Love From Above. A culinary program and fashion design program also will be offered, she said. “We’ll also have a full-blown child care program, where their children will stay within the building,” Florczak-Seeman said. “Babies will be taken care of by volunteers while the moms go to school. We’ll have a full-time licensed teacher on the premises as well who will also work with them on their homework and give classes on finances and mothering classes.” The program would be offered to women 18 to 26 years old, she said, and would serve both expectant mothers and single mothers. The facility would serve up to 12 women. This would be the company’s first facility, which will be called The Butterfly Garden…A Place for Healing and Transformation. Florczak-Seeman, who is 52, experienced an unplanned pregnancy herself when she was 16. “Unfortunately, the choice for me was made to have an abortion,” she said. “I didn’t have any other options. That abortion brought forth some very serious emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual aftermath.” Florczak-Seeman said she wants those in the program to understand “pregnancy is not a terminal disease.” “Pregnancy is not something that will kill them,” she said. “Pregnancy is something that lasts nine months. During that time, they can still continue their education. They can still do what they need to do. They can still have these children and be great mothers, and be successful young ladies in school.”)

http://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511018371-former-cod-board-member-savage-asks-federal-government-to-shut-down-dupage-policy-journal
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The filing questions the independence of the DuPage Policy Journal — alleging it is run by a political organization — and contends it should not be entitled to press exemption from campaign finance laws. Savage’s filing alleges the DuPage Policy Journal is not an independent newspaper, but rather is controlled by the Liberty Principles PAC through Dan Proft. Proft is a businessman, a radio talk-show host and a principal of Local Government Information Services, which owns the DuPage Policy Journal. Proft denied allegations made in the FEC filing and said the newspaper is owned by a private company. “It’s a legitimate newspaper just like any other newspaper,” Proft told the Associated Press. “I’ll put the stories we do on politics and policy up against any other newspaper in the state.” Rich Miller, publisher of the Capital Fax political blog and newsletter, agreed in a post that the problem with the filing is that the newspaper is owned by a private company. “Look, I do not want the federal government defining what is and is not a legit media company,” Miller wrote. “Progress Illinois does good work, but it gets most of its money from SEIU. I don’t know who funds Illinois Review, but I’m fine with them, too. Stay the heck away.” The FEC has 15 days to get a response from those accused in the complaint. It will then make a decision on whether to launch a full investigation.)
