(FROM THE ARTICLE: Noting that Google’s search algorithm is “perhaps the most powerful mediator of online attention to news,” a team of university scholars conducted an audit that found just 20 news sources account for more than half of article impressions, and most lean left. The top 20 percent of sources — 136 of 678 sampled — accounted for 86 percent of article impressions. And the top three accounted for 23 percent: CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post, according to Assistant Professor Nicholas Diakopoulos and his team at the Computational Journalism Lab at Northwestern. In an article for Columbia Journalism Review, he wrote that “for all the influence Google has in directing attention, we know painfully little about how its algorithm selects and curates news.” “Which sites does it direct traffic toward? And how does Google’s news curation impact the diversity of information found?” he asked. The audit examined Google Top Stories in terms of ideological lean, based on the self-reported political affiliation of Facebook users sharing content from those sources. The team’s data showed that 62.4 percent of article impressions were from sources rated as left-leaning. Just 11.3 percent were from sources rated as right-leaning. “These statistics underscore the degree of concentration of attention to a relatively narrow slice of news sources,” Diakopoulos wrote. . .‘News blacklist’ In April, a newly obtained document showed Google maintains a “news blacklist” and manipulates its search results manually, contrary to the company’s official denials. WND reported in March a Google manager allegedly responded to an employee who questioned the company’s war on “fake news” by arguing that fake news and “hate speech” had to be stopped, because “that’s how Trump won.” In November, the Daily Caller reported Google employees debated whether to bury the reporting of conservative media outlets in the company’s search function in response to Trump’s election. Employees similarly sought to manipulate search results to combat Trump’s travel ban, the communications showed. In an interview with WND at the time, Robert Epstein – who was famed behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner’s last Ph.D. student at Harvard – said Google’s effort to defeat Trump confirms his extensive, peer-reviewed research over the past half decade. “Not only does Google have the power to shift votes and opinions on a massive scale, they actually use that power,” Epstein said. In reality, our incomes are likely to peak years — and sometimes decades — before we retire. Consider this: People’s biggest wage increases tend to happen in their 20s and 30s, with more modest increases in midlife followed by declines, according to a 2016 analysis of Social Security earnings records underwritten by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Most people’s incomes peak by age 45, the researchers found, although the top 20% of earners peaked in their 50s. Understanding these general patterns, though, could help people make better decisions about spending, saving and when to retire. But the 50s tends to be a dangerous decade for workers, according to ProPublica, an independent nonprofit newsroom, and the Urban Institute, a nonprofit think tank that researches social and economic issues. The researchers found 56% of full-time, full-year workers ages 51 to 54 suffered an involuntary job loss after age 50 that had a substantial economic impact, either by reducing their earnings at least 50% or resulting in six months or more of unemployment. The median household income of these workers dropped 42%, and only one in 10 ever earned as much after they left their jobs as before. An additional 9% left their jobs involuntarily for personal reasons such as health. Among the 21 Democratic candidates hoping to challenge Trump in the 2020 election are more in their 60s and 70s than ever before. Two full generations separate the youngest presidential candidate, Pete Buttigieg (37), and the oldest, Bernie Sanders (77) and Joe Biden (76). Dr. John Holton, director of the Center for Gerontology at Concordia University, says that rather than asking if a candidate is too old for office, “a better question would be to ask what the characteristics of a bad president are. Would the answer have anything to do with the person’s age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, or experience? Are we confusing our assumptions about maturity with age?” Critics of older candidates say that electing a president in their 60s or 70s can be risky. The nation’s highest office is a physically demanding job that challenges even the fittest person – and there’s no good time for a health crisis when you’re in the Oval Office. Signs of age-related cognitive decline might not become apparent until it’s too late. Holton notes, “In the fishbowl life of a U.S. president, it would be highly unlikely that [cognitive impairment] would go unnoticed or unaddressed by staff and cabinet members.” There is also the consideration of life span. While life spans are longer than they were when the country was young, simple statistics indicate that electing a candidate in their 70s greatly increases the odds they’ll die while in office, but again, Holton points out that each candidate must be judged individually. “No more than 25% of longevity is determined by our genes, which means that 75% is determined by our choices and lifestyle behaviors,” he said. Holton also points out that at the moment, two Supreme Court justices are performing their own demanding jobs into their 80s (to wit: 86-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s famously rigorous exercise regimen). Many voters might consider advanced age a sign of experience and wisdom – qualities that presumably anyone would consider positive qualifications for office.)
