— John Anthony: A life defined by race – Scott Reeder (DIERSEN: Many, if not most of my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes are anti-German-American.  What if from the beginning I had pretended to be Swedish-American?  While all my ancestors immigrated from what is now Germany to northeast Illinois during the 1840s and 1850s, according to DNA Ancestry at
http://dna.ancestry.com, my ancestry is 33% Europe West, 28% Scandinavia, 24% Great Britain, 11% Ireland, 2% Europe East, 1% Finland/Northwest Russia, and 1% Italy/Greece.)
http://myjournalcourier.com/news/101941/commentary-a-life-defined-by-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In June, Anthony resigned his seat in the General Assembly to accept a leadership position with the Illinois Department of Corrections. And this month he began his search for his identity. He took a DNA test to determine his ancestry, which he didn’t know much about. He was born to a single, teenage mom and never met his father. “I was always told he was Puerto Rican and it was a one-night stand,” he said. “I’ve never known who my Dad was. I took the DNA test from Ancestry.com. The results have come back. I didn’t realize that I was Irish. I’m 13 different ethnicities. I’m not distressed – it’s a good thing. But have you ever experienced anything that was so good it was overwhelming? I’ve waited 40 years to find out who my dad is and I believe I’m on the verge of finding out who the family is.” One of the more startling discoveries of his DNA test is that he is only 44 percent black. And there is little clear evidence of whether he is at all Hispanic. ”I’m clueless as to what I am now. This has been an eye-opening experience.” His bewilderment is understandable. After all, fifty-three years after Martin Luther King, Jr. said he dreamed of his children being judged by the content of the character rather than the color of their skin, race remains the nation’s sore spot. Sadly, our society still clings to such labels. Amid his bewilderment, Anthony says he hopes to determine a greater sense of self. The DNA test has enabled him to connect with some distant cousins. Through networking with these relatives, he hopes to determine the identity of his father and determine if he has any biological siblings. “In the next couple weeks, I hope to be visiting someone in Illinois who is of the actual line of my father.” When asked if he still considered himself black, Anthony said. “Well, I’m 44 percent African. I asked my wife, ‘What does that make me?’ I guess the only thing I’m sure of is that I’m an American.”)

— Federal employees behind in pay by 34 percent on average, salary council says – Eric Yoder
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2016/10/31/federal-employees-behind-in-pay-by-34-percent-on-average-salary-council-says/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Federal workers earn 34.07 percent on average less than private-sector employees doing comparable work, according to the government’s official, although not universally accepted, tally of how salaries compare. The figure was announced at Friday’s annual meeting of the Federal Salary Council, a group of union representatives and outside experts on compensation that oversees the General Schedule, the pay system for white-collar workers below the senior ranks. In the prior three years, the reported overall average “pay gap” was about the same — 35.37, 35.28 and 34.92 percent. “Federal pay needs to be substantially increased,” said National Treasury Employees Union president Tony Reardon, a member of the council. “When you look at the private sector, what kind of pay increases they have had, it dwarfs what federal employees have received. It’s time for Congress to step up and pay federal employees what they deserve to be paid.” The “pay gap” figures are based on Labor Department surveys comparing salary data on 250 federal occupations at various levels of responsibility with corresponding rates in local labor markets. Other comparisons, using different data and different methods, have reached much different conclusions. Reports from the conservative Heritage Foundation in 2010 and the American Enterprise Institute in 2011 found a pay advantage for federal workers of 22 and 14 percent, respectively, while the libertarian Cato Institute last year reported a 78 percent advantage. The Congressional Budget Office concluded in 2012 that federal workers were ahead by 2 percent on average, with less educated ones further ahead and more educated ones behind the private sector. Those reports said that the value of employment-related benefits, which the Labor Department data do not account for, further favors federal employees. The Government Accountability Office said in a 2012 report that no one approach to assessing pay is definitive.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161029/discuss/161028739/
(FROM THE LETTER: Here it is, less than 30 days until the most contentious presidential campaign that I can remember, yet driving through the Glen Ellyn and Wheaton areas I have seen just one election sign and that was for Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine. I personally think this election is so negative that no one wants to have a sign in their yard declaring which candidate they choose. I believe they are afraid of a brick or worse, being thrown through their window. Good thing the election booths are private.)
— Trump is our last line of defense – Nancy J. Thorner, Lake Bluff
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161028/discuss/161028771/
(FROM THE LETTER: The shameless “Borking” of Trump has become nonstop since he became the Republican presidential nominee, fostered by print media and TV networks which have unabashedly joined forces with the Democratic Party. Trump, not of the establishment, would shake up the status quo and the power and money that flows to those who support the globalist agenda of the rich and powerful working behind the scenes to control this nation’s destiny. How will Hillary’s call for (1) open borders as a portal through which flow murderers, drugs, drug lords, cartels, and hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants and (2) extending a welcome mat to thousands of un-vetted Syrians for whom we could query our database until the cows come home and yet find nothing if no records exist?  Keep Americans safe? Hillary can’t even define who the enemy is, and she supports the Iran Nuclear deal travesty. Spineless establishment Republicans created the Trump movement, giving Obama the upper hand to leave this nation with a $20 trillion-plus unsustainable debt and a dismal economy. Obama is on track to be the only U.S. president in history who fails to deliver a single year of GDP 3 percent-plus economic growth, his, a dismal overall 1.55 percent rate. Hillary’s announcement to raise taxes on the rich will cripple business expansion, a job creator, and stifle GDP growth. Trump is the last line of defense against a continuation of Obama’s failed policies through a Hillary administration. Hillary’s Supreme Court appointees would render the Second Amendment (gun rights) meaningless and imperil religious liberty. Trump desires to help this country and is committed to secure our freedom and restore our nation’s greatness, militarily and economically.)

http://www.journalstandard.com/news/20161029/chuck-sweeny-election-campaign-tame-compared-to-debacle-of-1968
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So, as crazy as this year’s campaign seems, I’m not afraid the country will crack up. In 1968, as a student about to enter the University of Illinois Chicago, I really did fear for what would happen to the U.S.A. Both the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy had been assassinated that spring; there were riots in many cities; 500,000 U.S. troops were in Vietnam; college campuses were in turmoil and people like me wondered, “Can anybody here operate this place?” Chicago’s reputation as a political convention location was ruined. Between 1860 and 1968, Chicago hosted 14 Republican and 10 Democratic presidential nominating conventions. Since 1968, the Republicans have not been back. Democrats did come back finally, but not until 1996. I covered that and let me tell you, Mayor Richard M. Daley, son of Richard J. Daley, must have sent all his cops to charm school. They were the friendliest folks in uniform since Captain Kangaroo.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Shugart has made Welter’s youth an issue in the campaign. At 49, she is nearly double his age. She contends life experience makes for better lawmakers. “Surviving through adversity builds character, knowledge and the ability to understand people,” she said. Welter countered his age was no problem, especially given his experience in government. He said Shugart’s criticism was “discouraging” for young people. “It doesn’t matter how old you are. http://foxillinois.com/news/local/auditor-dispute-in-champaign-county
(FROM THE ARTICLE: George Danos, who is running for Champaign County Auditor, had some comments to say about his opponent and current auditor, John Farney. He suggests that Farney violated an Illinois Public Act by falsely stating his chief deputy auditor was a certified accountant. He said that this violates the Illinois law by not having an active license with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Farney called these allegations false and said his chief deputy auditor is highly qualified. “I really find it disappointing and disturbing that my opponent is dragging her good name through the mud,” said Farney. “I find it appalling that he would expose one of his employees to professional risk, she is under the discipline of the profession we share, he’s not an accountant and shows no such risk,” explains Danos. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A group of six African-American professionals in fields ranging from government to medicine to entertainment spoke to a group of Jefferson Junior High students as part of their first SUCCESS Career Day. Assistant Principal Jeremy Christian praised the event. “It helped to really give them a visual of what it’s like to be successful,” he said. “A lot of times African-American students, especially in Naperville, they don’t have something that’s positive to look to because they don’t see anyone that looks like them, so our goal today was to offer them alternatives, giving them some tangible people or tangible things to look at, processes and systems where they can kind of mimic their pathway to their future.” SUCCESS, which stands for “School Using Coordinated Community Efforts to Strengthen Students,” focuses on empowering black and other minority students to achieve greatness. This was the first SUCCESS event at Jefferson, which has around 70 black students out of their nearly 900 total, a sense of minority that panelists addressed.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Police in Des Moines, Iowa, arrested a woman on suspicion of voting twice in the general election. Terri Lynn Rote, a registered Republican, is accused of submitting ballot at two different early voting stations, the Des Moines Register reports. Rote told Iowa Public Radio that she was afraid her first ballot for Donald Trump would be changed to a vote for Hillary Clinton. “I wasn’t planning on doing it twice, it was spur of the moment,” she said. “The polls are rigged.” Polls being “rigged” has become a common refrain in Trump’s campaign, as the Republican nominee has repeatedly insisted that voter fraud is common. “Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day,” Trump tweeted on Oct. 17. “Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naive!” Rote was arrested Thursday on a first-degree election misconduct charge, which is a Class D felony. She was released Friday on a $5,000 bond.)

WHEATON RECORD
— Wheaton College’s history of political involvement – Kelsey Plankeel
http://www.wheatonrecord.com/news/wheatons-history-political-involvement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite not hosting a presidential candidate since 1992, Wheaton College has a rich history of hosting, producing and gaining support from prominent political leaders since its foundation by Jonathan Blanchard — who once ran for president himself — in 1860. Of all of Wheaton’s renowned visitors, perhaps the most impressive are the nine presidential candidates who visited Wheaton’s campus between 1960 and 1992. The first was Richard M. Nixon, the Vice President and 1960 Republican presidential candidate at the time. Nixon appeared at a rally on McCully field and, according to the Wheaton College Archives, encouraged the crowd to “strengthen the faith of America” and “see that young people grow up with faith in God.” Nixon later won the presidency. President Jimmy Carter was the last president to visit Wheaton. He delivered the February 1992 LeRoy H. Pfund Lecture. Other visitors with presidential aspirations included Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress, 1964 Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, 1972 Democratic candidate George McGovern, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, a populist Democrat who ran for president in 1896, 1900 and 1908, was also a guest of Wheaton. Most recently, 2012 Republican Vice Presidential and current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan gave a speech at a Wheaton breakfast in spring of 2015. Many alumni have also gone on to become recognized public figures. Disgraced ex-Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was a 1964 graduate. At one point, Hastert served in Congress alongside three other Wheaton graduates: Republican Indiana Senator Dan Coats ’65, Republican Michigan Representative Paul B. Henry ’63 and Democratic Washington Representative Jim McDermott ’58. Other alumni in politics include Michael Gerson ’86, chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush who helped write Bush’s memorable post-9/11 speeches. More infamously, David R. Young Jr. ’59 was a special assistant at the National Security Council in the Nixon Administration. Young co-founded the White House Special Investigations Unit — known as “The Plumbers” — known for breaking into a psychiatry office and later attempting to break into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex, instigating the Watergate scandal. Additionally, several public figures have supported Wheaton financially in the past as Trustees. Owen Lovejoy was a founding Trustee of Wheaton College, U.S. Congressman and friend of Abraham Lincoln. A scholarship was later presented in his name. Another trustee, Salmon P. Chase, was a Senator, governor of Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chase was the great-great uncle of Wheaton’s sixth president and the great-great-great uncle of Ken Chase, current chair of the Communication department at Wheaton. He is also the face of the $10,000 bill. David Iglesias, current director of the Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics and Economics and professor of politics and law, graduated from Wheaton in 1980. In 2001, Iglesias was appointed the U.S. State Attorney for the District of New Mexico under the Bush administration. He also served in the U.S. Navy in 2008 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom as a terrorism and war crimes prosecutor and has held various other national and state positions. Iglesias said Wheaton helped prepare him for public service in three ways: “It gave me the confidence to speak in public; it gave me the Biblical basis for getting involved in the political process; it helped me organize my thoughts and ensure I was focusing on facts, not arguments.” Politics and international relations department chair and associate professor of politics Bryan McGraw said Wheaton tries to “prepare all of our students to exercise leadership in whatever field they choose to go into.” Specifically, Wheaton equips aspiring political leaders to use the gifts given to them to effect justice worldwide, according to McGraw. “We would hope that Wheaton graduates — and Christians more broadly — would be more likely to grasp that call clearly and have the freedom and courage to put it into effect.”)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161026/news/161028967/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Responding to a court order, Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41 has released emails from leaders of its teachers union that show they were working last spring to create a special committee to vet school board candidates about a year before the April 2017 election. A DuPage County judge ruled that the emails were public records and ordered the district to turn over the messages to Jeff Cooper, a former school board candidate who filed a lawsuit in June accusing the district of violating state public records laws. Cooper sued after the district denied his request for the emails under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. . .The judge also ordered the district to pay Cooper’s attorney $5,600 in fees and $362.84 in other costs by Nov. 22. The district expects to spend “about the same amount” in attorney fees and costs as it’s paying Cooper’s lawyer. Cooper said Wednesday the emails “should have never been withheld in the first place.”  He has not decided whether he will make another bid at a seat on the board in April.)

— Democrats Ask Judge To Sanction Republicans Over Trump  The RNC said the filing was completely meritless. – Reuters
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/democrats-ask-judge-to-sanction-republicans-over-trump_us_58115d36e4b0990edc2f2c74
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic National Committee on Wednesday asked a U.S. judge to hold the Republican National Committee in contempt of court over allegations that Donald Trump encouraged his supporters to intimidate minority voters. The DNC accused Republicans in a court filing of violating a longstanding consent decree, which restricts Republicans’ ability to question voters at the polls and prevent those people from casting a ballot. During the presidential campaign, Republican nominee Trump has asked followers to “watch” for fraud in the Nov. 8 presidential election in certain areas where minority voters reside, even though no evidence of fraud exists, the filing said. Some of Trump’s followers have pledged to do just that, the filing said. The RNC has supported Trump’s “ballot security endeavors,” Democrats said in the court filing. The RNC said the filing was completely meritless. “The RNC strictly abides by the consent decree and does not take part directly or indirectly in any efforts to prevent or remedy vote fraud.  Nor do we coordinate with the Trump campaign or any other campaign or party organization in any efforts they may make in this area,” a RNC spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “The RNC remains focused on getting out the vote.” Representatives for the Trump campaign could not immediately be reached for comment. The DNC asked a New Jersey federal judge to issue an injunction preventing the RNC from spending money on voter integrity efforts, and to instruct its field offices that no employee shall participate in any ballot security measures.)

https://www.adn.com/nation-world/2016/10/26/clubs-affirmative-action-bake-sale-at-university-of-texas-draws-hundreds-of-angry-students/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The bake sale, which club members characterized as a protest against the “institutionalized racism” of affirmative action programs at colleges and universities, soon attracted a crowd of hundreds who lobbed criticism at the conservative students. “Check your privilege!” they yelled as the club’s remaining members volleyed questions from the crowd. The crowd began to disperse just after 2 p.m. when the remaining members of the group left to chants of “racists go home!” The UT-Austin student newspaper The Daily Texan broadcast live from the event. “Our protest was designed to highlight the insanity of assigning our lives value based on our race and ethnicity, rather than our talents, work ethic and intelligence,” said club chairman Vidal Castaneda. “It is insane that institutional racism, such as affirmative action, continues to allow for universities to judge me by the color of my skin rather than my actions.” The same club came under fire in 2013 for holding a nearly identical bake sale — charging different races different prices for brownies. Gregory J. Vincent, UT-Austin’s vice president for diversity and community engagement, called that bake sale “deplorable.” Vincent again spoke for the university on Wednesday, calling the latest bake sale “inflammatory and demeaning.” “Yet focusing our attention on the provocative nature of the YCT’s actions ignores a much more important issue: They create an environment of exclusion and disrespect among our students, faculty and staff,” he said. Vincent acknowledged that the school’s West Mall, where the bake sale was held, is an area where protests often take place and where free speech and the expression of diverse opinions on myriad issues is encouraged. But, while it was “their right” to hold the bake sale, he questioned whether the group’s methods furthered the dialogue about race and privilege or simply sought to divide the campus along racial lines.)

MONEY MAGAZINRE
— Why Goldman Sachs Only Fires a Few People at a Time – Martha C. White  (DIERSEN: All during the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO 1980-1997, a) the agency was under hiring and/or promotion freezes, b) the agency suffered budget cuts in either relative or absolute terms, and c) the agency shrank from more than 6,000 employees in 1980 to less than 3,000 employees in 1997.)
http://time.com/money/4546249/goldman-sachs-firing/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Goldman Sachs has laid off 443 people this year, but the investment bank has kept its job cuts under the radar by letting people go by the dozens rather than the hundreds, which keeps it from having to notify regulators of “mass layoffs.”  Goldman Sachs has disclosed to state regulators seven different instances of job cuts this year, Bloomberg reports. New York state law requires that companies file a notice with the state when they cut jobs in many circumstances, and if those job cuts total 250 or more, they have to notify the state of “mass layoffs.” Although Goldman Sachs has shed the highest number of employees this year since 2008, when it laid off 900 during an economically punishing year, 2016’s reductions in head count have gone largely unnoticed. When banks, especially high-profile ones like Goldman Sachs, downsize the number of people they employ, it can send a signal to investors and to the market about how they’re doing and if they’re struggling. Keeping job cuts low-key avoids the negative connotation a big layoff suggests, Jeanne Branthover, a partner at DHR International, an executive search firm, told Bloomberg. “This is more, ‘We’re having layoffs and we don’t want to explain it,’” she said. Of course, there are strategic business reasons to cut jobs a few at a time: If business in a particular area rebounds quickly, it is easier for a company to add back a smaller number of employees than to try and re-staff a gutted department.)

DAILY HERALD
— Proft: Without suburbs, GOP will never regain majority in Illinois – Kerry Lester  (DIERSEN: Proft “holds DuPage County Republicans responsible for loss of influence at the polls.”  What does Proft say to Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, and RINOs in the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), the DuPage County Republican Central Committee (DCRCC), and the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) who hold me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails responsible for all the losses that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000?  I could stress a) that I have never been a MTRCC officer, a DCRCC officer, or an IRP officer and b) that I have never been an IRP State Central Committee member.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161026/news/161028959/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton native Dan Proft has emerged as a key behind-the-scenes player in Illinois politics as the head of Liberty Principles PAC, a political action committee funneling millions of dollars to Republicans in races across the suburbs and state. Proft, a conservative radio host and 2010 candidate for governor in the Republican primary, has about $4 million in cash on hand to spend on campaigns, according to the most campaign finance filings with the Illinois State Board of Elections. In recent weeks, that has meant more than $250,000 spent in radio and television ads supporting Park Ridge Republican Mel Thillens’ campaign for 28th state Senate, more than $175,000 for ads supporting Republican Heidi Holan of Glendale Heights in her campaign for 46th House, and more than $225,000 on ads in support of Dawn Abernathy of Mundelein in her campaign for 59th state House, among others. Proft recently created political mailings designed to look like newspapers, including the Lake County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal, holds DuPage County Republicans responsible for loss of influence at the polls, and offers some support of Donald Trump’s bid for president. Here’s a conversation with Proft, edited for length. . .Q. Do you see the DuPage GOP stronghold as eroding?  A. Clearly, DuPage is less competitive than it was when I was growing up. It’s self-inflicted wounds. It’s our own bad actors and bad actions. It’s cycle after cycle of bad candidates in bad races and bad political leadership and being junior partners to the Democrats and some people think DuPage should be run like a mini Cook County. Think about this: In 1998, George Ryan got 72 percent of the vote in DuPage County. And in 2010, Bill Brady got 52 percent. For the second most populous county, most Republican county, that is an unbelievable amount of attrition in a relatively short period of time. When demographics change, you incorporate new people into the party. We didn’t do that, partly because we told people to wait your turn. It was an outdated system that pushed talent away and bred corruption and incompetence.)

LOYOLA PHOENIX
— Mock Border Wall Sparks Immigration Dialogue – Chris Hacker  (DIERSEN: I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. How soon, if not already, will Loyola officially announce that it will only admit students who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors?)
http://www.loyolaphoenix.com/2016/10/mock-border-wall-sparks-immigration-dialogue/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Build the wall” has become a rallying cry for millions of conservative Americans who feel left behind by an increasingly diverse America. And “build the wall” is exactly what a group of Loyola students did, but for a very different reason than some conservatives might. “It isn’t about some wall hundreds of miles away,” said junior Addison Mauck, who organized the Mock Border Wall project that was displayed on Loyola’s West Quad from Oct. 18–20. “The purpose of this project is to humanize the topic of immigration and combat the negative rhetoric of the current political season.” The words, “No human being is illegal” and “We are a nation of immigrants,” were displayed on hand-painted banners that hung from the wall’s steel fencing. Despite the project’s supportive message, it garnered harsh criticism from undocumented students who felt they weren’t given a voice in the installation. About 20 signs that read, “Majority of undocumented students were not consulted for this,” were posted on the wall in protest. “We had a student [in] our organization who represented the community of undocumented students because we do not want to force anyone to speak about something that can be very personal and private,” Mauck said in response to the criticism. That student to whom Mauck referred, who wished to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of her immigration status, said her role in the project was not very significant. “It raises the question of why more students weren’t reached out to by anyone other than me, because I was not an organizer of the project,” she said. “Our community, both undocumented and immigrant, does have a voice on campus, and other people should not be speaking for us.” Loyola has taken steps to support that community of undocumented students. In 2001, Loyola became involved in the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for children of undocumented parents. Since 2012, about 150 students and faculty have completed “Share the DREAM,” which is training to become an ally for undocumented students, offered by Loyola’s Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (SDMA), said SDMA director Joe Saucedo. The training is a three-hour long session that covers DREAM Act legislation, the barriers undocumented students face and the personal stories that those students bring with them, according to Joe Saucedo. “It’s important to know that these students’ status of being undocumented is one aspect of who they are, but it’s not all of who they are,” Saucedo said. “[The training] indicates to someone who may carry those identities that this is a safe space and there are people who get them and understand.”  In order to make it easier for undocumented students to attend Loyola, students voted in 2015 to include a $2.50 fee to each student’s tuition, creating the Magis Scholarship Fund, which provides free tuition and housing to five undocumented students every year. One recipient of the scholarship, sophomore Vince Garcia, said he appreciated Loyola’s support of undocumented students but revealed that he hasn’t received any communication or resources from the university since receiving the scholarship. He said his academic advisor hasn’t completed the DREAM ally training. “I’d say they should communicate better, because I always have questions about health insurance, for example, and I feel like I don’t have anyone to talk to,” said Garcia, a social work major who wants to help undocumented students like himself get a head start. “I think we’re getting better at this. Part of our job is taking stock of the barriers that students face, and we try to bring in the students themselves and ask them how they feel,” said Saucedo. “The most important thing we can do, as people with citizenship privilege who can vote, is to continue to elect politicians who will support these programs and keep the interests of undocumented students in mind.”)

— Democrats see themselves as Teslas, Republicans as Corvettes  Respondents said Trump should drive an Escalade, Clinton a Mercedes GL-Class. – Danny King  (DIERSEN: The cars that you own say more about you than anything that you can say about yourself.  I have owned my 1972 Chevy Corvette since 1971, my 2005 Chevy Corvette since 2005, my 2016 Ford Mustang since 2016, my 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Max since 2012, my 2003 Chevy Cavalier LS since 2010, and my 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX since 1995.)
http://www.autoblog.com/2016/10/26/democrats-tesla-republicans-corvettes/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Given a tidy sum of money to spend on a vehicle, many Democrats would buy a Tesla Model S electric vehicle, while a lot of Republicans would choose a Chevrolet Corvette. That’s one politically quirky result of a poll taken by Swapalease last month, which linked respondent’s political preferences to car choices. About 2,500 people participated in the unscientific, opt-in survey. When asked what kind of car best suited their personalities, Democrats were most likely to choose the Tesla, while Republicans saw themselves as ‘Vette-like. The Tesla/Corvette dichotomy also split down gender lines, as many men wanted Corvettes (no shock there) and women preferred Teslas. Other cars that registered on the “personality” list were big sellers such as the Honda Accord and Ford F-150 as well as the Hummer and the Chevrolet Volt. Take a look here for Swapalease’s data from the survey results. Granted, the results of the poll were tilted a bit, as the respondents were two-thirds male, while Republicans outnumbered Democrats by a 3-to-2 margin. When guessing which cars the presidential candidates would prefer to drive, the respondents said Republican candidate Donald Trump would drive a Cadillac Escalade, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton would choose a Mercedes-Benz GL Class. With the survey pool leaning Republican, 39 percent of those polled said they would vote for Trump, 36 percent would choose Clinton, and the rest would choose the always-elusive “Someone Else.” On that note, when given various choices to describe the “personality of this year’s election,” a third of those polled said “a driverless car.” As for how long the respondents said they’d keep their cars, most ranged from 21 to 36 months. Which is quite a bit shorter than a presidential term. Even with the unscientific methods at use here, we can perhaps learn a little something, since the connection between electric cars and Democrats has been seen before. But, naturally, we know that Republicans can like Tesla, too. Some of them even buy five of them. They just might be outliers.)

http://www.bizjournals.com/chicago/news/2016/10/25/how-gov-rauner-salary-compares-to-his-peers.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Public payroll data from all 50 states indicates that the average U.S. governor earns $137,415 per year in salary, with variances ranging from a low of $70,000 to a high of just under $200,000 per year. By those measures, the average governor’s pay is nothing to slouch at — especially when considering that the median household income in the United States hovers around $52,000 per year. However, it does pale in comparison to the eight-figure paydays that are increasingly common among private-sector CEOs, many of whom oversee far-smaller budgets and workforces relative to the typical state governor. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been in office since January 2015 and oversees an annual state budget of $38.6 billion, is expected to earn $177,412 this year, which puts him at No. 5 among the 50 state governors. His pay is at 129 percent of the national average. But it must be noted that Rauner forgoes an annual salary from the state.)

The demonstration began at a key bridge on campus, where the protesters made a human chain to prevent white people from crossing, instead directing them to “go around” by trudging across the stream. Later, the activists turned their ire against an on-campus store leased to a private company, posting a fake “eviction notice” on the building threatening that “community action will continue to escalate” if the space is not vacated immediately.)

THE HILL
— Federal employees shun Trump, give big money to Clinton – Jonathan Swan  (DIERSEN: If I was still a federal employee, because of their hatred of Trump and because of their hatred of my demographics, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworker, and subordinates would have killed me by now figuratively, if not literally.)
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/302817-government-workers-shun-trump-give-big-money-to-clinton-campaign
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Federal government employees are opening their wallets to help Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump on Nov. 8. Of the roughly $2 million that federal workers from 14 agencies spent on presidential politics by the end of September, about $1.9 million, or 95 percent, went to the Democratic nominee’s campaign, according to an analysis by The Hill. Employees at all the agencies analyzed, without exception, are sending their campaign contributions overwhelmingly to Clinton over her Republican counterpart. Several agencies, such as the State Department, which Clinton once led, saw more than 99 percent of contributions going to Clinton. Employees of the Department of Justice, which investigated Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of State, gave Clinton 97 percent of their donations. Trump received $8,756 from DOJ employees compared with $286,797 for Clinton. From IRS employees, Clinton received 94 percent of donations. Federal government employees overwhelmingly backed Clinton’s presidential campaign no matter which agency The Hill analyzed using Federal Election Commission data covering donors giving more than $200. Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller said these donation patterns are more evidence of the “rigged system” favoring establishment candidates like Clinton over outsiders like Trump. The Trump campaign has been citing lopsided media donations to Clinton — though there’s no evidence they’re coming from reporters covering Trump — as further evidence that the game is fixed. But David Schultz, a Hamline University Professor of Political Science, said government employees have historically favored Democratic candidates over Republicans both in their voting habits and political contributions made in their personal time. Under the Hatch Act, federal government employees are banned from engaging in political activities, including making campaign contributions, during work hours. “Government employees are, on balance, more moderate or more liberal as opposed to the general population,” Schultz said. “Not across the board, but in general.” Government employees are “more likely to believe in government as opposed to, let’s say, a privatization program,” he added, “programs that we would view as hostile to government.” Republicans typically campaign on promises to slash government payrolls, which helps explain why recent GOP presidential candidates have received the smaller share of donations from government workers. Yet while Republicans usually do worse than Democrats, Trump appears to be doing especially poorly in fundraising from government employees. The 2012 GOP presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, received 14 percent of donations from the same group of agencies surveyed for Trump. Trump received just 5 percent. Romney got close to $300,000 more from these same departments’ employees than Trump has four years later. Comparisons to previous presidential candidates are of limited value, since they took public funding for their general election campaigns. Trump might have had a chance to do better than Romney. He discarded much of Republican orthodoxy during his primary campaign, which could have led some federal employees to believe that he’d be more amenable to big government. He vowed, for example, to leave massive social welfare programs virtually untouched. But Trump also constantly attacked federal institutions. During his primary campaign, he described the federal government as a corrupt, bloated body run by “very, very, stupid people.” Trump vowed “tremendous cutting” of the government in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in January and singled out the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency as agencies he’d slash dramatically if not outright eliminate. Agency employees have likely taken note of Trump’s hostile rhetoric. In the Department of Education’s case, that included Trump’s pledges to hand over control to the states and to fight tooth and nail against Common Core standards. From Department of Education employees this cycle, Trump received three donations totaling $220. Clinton received 724 donations for more than $74,000. In all, she received 99.7 percent of donations from employees of the department. Donations from the State Department, which Clinton ran from 2009 to 2013, were even more slanted in her favor. State Department employees gave Trump 39 donations, for $4,652. Over the same time period, they gave their former boss 2,518 donations, for $425,525. Throughout his campaign, Trump has portrayed himself as a strongman who would toughen up America’s defenses — both militarily and at the border — and who would take care of veterans. It’s probably no coincidence, therefore, that Trump performed best in donations among employees of three agencies: Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs. But even employees of these more Trump-friendly agencies have overwhelmingly contributed to Clinton’s campaign. From Defense employees, Trump received 341 donations for $43,575. Clinton got 2,392 donations for $225,560, giving her 84 percent of the money. From Homeland Security employees, Clinton got 90 percent of the donations, and from Veterans Affairs she took 88 percent. Romney performed significantly better than Trump with employees at all three agencies, receiving, for example, $98,153 from Defense employees, which amounted 21 percent of donations. During the Republican primaries, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said, “Let’s create a little bit of a recession in Washington, D.C., so that we can have economic prosperity outside of Washington.” Fear of such plans might be the truest explanation of these uniformly lopsided donations. Schultz, the Hamline professor, said “self-preservation”— particularly for workers engaged in public sector unions — probably motivates their political giving. “This means support for their jobs,” he said. “Clinton, for the most part, is going to be probably a continuation of more or less what Obama is.” Federal government employees, he said, are likely “more willing to give to somebody who would be more predictable in terms of supporting their livelihood, their jobs, as opposed to somebody who might be less predictable.”)

DuPage County District 5 Republican candidate Janice Anderson is distributing bags full of fliers to volunteers before walking precincts in Aurora. Anderson’s favored strategy is to find someone doing yard work and “connect with that voter. Tell them who I am. Look at them in the eye and talk about my race.” Voters aren’t happy, the Naperville Township trustee finds. “They’re angry about the mess in Springfield and what’s going on in the presidential race. I bring it back to what’s important to them … how to fix the roads and making sure we’re running the health department correctly.” When conversation turns to the presidency, Anderson, who backed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in the primary, says, “I’m for whoever can balance the budget.” Among the township foot soldiers is McCluskey. Monday to Friday, he’s an attorney. On weekends, he’s making closing arguments to voters. “You just have to be able to speak to them and present yourself,” McCluskey said. “You’d be surprised … some people just take your materials, a lot of people get engaged.” In fact, McCluskey enjoys the campaign trail so much, “I wish I’d done this at a younger age,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Trump “Tipping Point”  But all this came to a head on Oct. 8, when Piper published a post on the Illini Republicans’ Facebook page denouncing Donald Trump’s lewd statements about women. Piper said he and the executive board agreed to post about the topic, but the executive board took issue with Piper’s actual post, which went live without their approval. While he noted some members thought the words against Trump were too harsh, Piper disagrees. “We could have gone much further and could have said many other negative things about him up to this point,” Piper said.  “Donald Trump’s recently revealed comments towards women are reprehensible,” the post stated. “On a campus that struggles to fight sexual assault, we find it absolutely necessary to condemn his words and actions. The Illini Republicans stand for the equality of all women and for all people to be treated in a fair and respectful manner.” The post has since been taken down. Correll credited Piper’s post as the tipping point. As the club was split on supporting Trump, Correll said it was inappropriate for Piper to bypass the executive board’s approval. A few days after the post, Menezes received a petition from the executive board asking her and Piper to step down. Menezes alerted Piper that the executive board accused him of withholding funds from the board and the treasurer by holding club money in a private bank account. Piper said these accusations were brought forth by executive board members Bernal, Brown, Elena Ahasic and Jonathan Heideman among others.  All four declined to comment.)

— As Graduate School Nears, a Need to Cut Expenses  An ICU nurse in New York needs a better financial plan to better afford a master’s program – LISA WARD  (DIERSEN: My Democrat IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were filled withe envy.  They were furious that I could afford to pay for tuition and books a) for job-related graduate business courses at Loyola 1972-1976, b) for job-related graduate accounting courses at DePaul 1976-1980, and c) for job-related graduate finance courses at IIT 1992-1997. To keep their jobs and to get promoted, my Democrat IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates focused on promoting Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion, that is, they focused on getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

— Despite its struggles, Acapulco still sparkles – Alan Solomon  (DIERSEN: Have you vacationed in Acapulco?  I vacationed there as well as in Mexico City, Jamaica, Hawaii, and the Bahamas in the early/mid 1970s with a fellow straight single male conservative Republican IRS employee.  My Democrat IRS superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were filled with envy and did not like that at all.  I could afford those vacations and I could afford to buy a new 1972 Corvette in 1971, to buy a new town home in University Park in 1972, to buy a studio condo in the Outer Drive East (ODE) building in Chicago in 1974, to buy a one bedroom condo in the ODE building in 1976, and to pay for tuition for graduate business and accounting courses at Loyola and DePaul because IRS hired me at the GS-7 level (currently $43,915) in 1971, promoted me to GS-9 (currently $53,717) in 1972, promoted me to GS-11 (currently $64,992) in 1973, and promoted me to GS-12 (currently $77,899) in 1974.)

— Take just one step forward on your career goals – Rex Huppke  (DIERSEN: When you were young, what were your career goals.  If you are a non-veteran White male federal employee, your career goal has to be making GS-13 ($92,632) by age 25, GS-14 ($109,463) by age 30, GS-15 ($128,759) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service ($160,300) by age 40, or your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of.)

— To grow size of Police Department, Chicago will need twice what is planned – Cecilia Reyes
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/data/ct-police-retirement-mayors-plan-20161002-htmlstory.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Tribune analysis of police pension fund data shows a large number of officers eligible for sweetened retirement benefits, an incentive known as “55 and out,” as part of their contract, which expires in June 30, 2017. There are 569 officers who have served for at least 26 years, the average time for retirees between 2011 and 2015, and are at least 55 years old. Officers 55 or older qualify for extended health care benefits, extending coverage, paid for by the department, until an officer is eligible for Medicare. There are 3,840 officers who have served for at least 20 years, at which point, pension benefits grow by about $2,000 each month, the pension fund estimates. Of eligible officers, 2,592 officers are older than 50, when their pensions start to be paid.)
— Presidential race drives auto industry issues home – Fred Meier
http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/sc-clinton-trump-auto-industry-issues-autocover-1020-20161018-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. auto industry has been in the spotlight during the 2016 presidential campaigns, starting with the primaries. The hottest issue has not been about what automakers produce but where, thanks to the debate over free-trade deals including the North American Free Trade Agreement and the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership. History shows that the winner could end up having a big impact on what and how we drive. Past presidential milestones include interstate highways (Dwight Eisenhower), the first safety regulations and the 25 percent tariff on trucks (Lyndon B. Johnson), federal emissions rules and the 55-mph speed limit (Richard Nixon), fuel economy rules (Gerald Ford), the first Chrysler bailout (Jimmy Carter), the most recent industry bailout (George W. Bush and Barack Obama), and ramped-up emissions and fuel economy rules (Obama).)
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Ever-increasingly, if you support Trump, Democrats call you a Nazi, and especially if you are German national origin, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owner, non-veteran, and/or if your ancestors have been in America for a long time.  To say that a person is a Nazi is to make it clear that you want Clinton to use the federal government to get rid of that person.)
