ABC7
— West suburban school bus driver warns of CBD use after failing drug test, losing job – Chuck Goudie and Christine M Tressel (DIERSEN: How stoned, that is, how high a THC level, will employers allow their employees to be? How stoned, that is, how high a THC level, will voters allow their elected officials to be?)
https://abc7chicago.com/health/suburban-bus-driver-warns-of-cbd-use-after-failing-drug-test-losing-job/5568430/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But she had taken hemp oil capsules for back pain relief. She suspects that those capsules left trace amounts of THC in her system. Barton was stunned by the test results and still has trouble believing the over-the-counter product could have caused the positive reading. Many pharmacology experts aren’t surprised some people are failing drug screenings after using certain CBD products because THC can build up in your system. The compound is found in both cannabis plants: hemp and marijuana. CBD taken from hemp should have 0.3% or less of THC, the psychoactive chemical that causes a mind-altering effect. THC is among the drugs screened for by some companies. It’s not permitted for certain employees, including those who drive big rigs and school buses.)

I want the process to include providing lots of information about the candidates, asking the candidates lots of hard questions, and holding candidate forums.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20190926/why-people-prefer-democracy
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In fact, at a time of concern and, in many quarters, cynicism about democracy and its prospects, they remind us of a basic truth: people want a say in how they’re governed. As Winston Churchill put it back in 1944, “At the bottom of all the tributes paid to democracy is the little man, walking into the little booth, with a little pencil, making a little cross on a little bit of paper — no amount of rhetoric or voluminous discussion can possibly diminish the overwhelming importance of that point.”)

What does the length of your marriage say about you? My Democrat IRS superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious when I got married in 1978. They had hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I was so bad that no one would marry me. Further, they were beyond furious that she had a good job. The rate would start at 1% per year and rise to 8% for married couples with assets of least $10 billion. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The political headlines have been relentless lately. Calls for impeaching the President. Debates over health care, immigration and gun control. Fights over who tweeted what. Discussions of these issues can quickly get heated and toxic. They can affect relationships and even your health, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. It seems that Americans “are suffering some pretty negative consequences because of their attention to and engagement in politics,” says author Kevin Smith, a political scientist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, discussing the survey results. . .Nearly 40% of respondents said that politics was a cause of stress in their lives. About 20% reported losing sleep, feeling fatigued, or being depressed due to politics. Between 10% and 30% of the respondents said that politics took an emotional toll on them, by causing anger, frustration, hate,or guilt, or caused them to make comments they later regretted. And about 20% reported that politics had damaged their friendships. And, says Smith, “16% say that politics has made my home life less pleasant.” . . . In 2017, the APA annual survey on stress levels of Americans found that 57% of respondents said that they were stressed by the current political climate, whereas 63% said that the future of the nation was a cause of stress for them. Sixty percent said they thought that the country was its lowest point in history. And over half of the respondents said that while they like to stay informed about news and politics, doing so stresses them out. . .For now, Bufka says, the new study suggests that political engagement comes at an emotional cost. And that in turn could affect politics. “In a democracy, it’s really important that people want to be engaged,” she says. “It would be really discouraging if people felt [so] stressed and negatively impacted by the political discourse of the day, that … they disengage from politics.”)

— Democrats Cite Discredited SPLC to Sic the IRS on Conservative ‘Hate Groups’ – TYLER O’NEIL
https://pjmedia.com/trending/dems-cite-discredited-splc-to-sic-the-irs-on-hate-groups/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yet (LaHood) also warned that “the IRS should not be used as a political tool to discriminate against organizations that differ in viewpoints. … We cannot use political disagreement as a metric to define hate speech or a hate group. This type of labeling can and has led to violent acts.” “I know my colleague just referenced the Southern Poverty Law Center,” LaHood said. “In 2012, an armed man named Floyd Lee Corkins walked into the Family Research Council Washington headquarters with the intent to shoot and kill as many of its employees as possible. He was apprehended, but not before wounding the non-profit’s business manager. Mr. Corkins later told the FBI that he had seen the nonprofit group listed as an anti-gay hate group on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s website.” LaHood did not call for the IRS to revoke the SPLC’s non-profit status (although some, notably Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), have called for an investigation, not because the SPLC is liberal but because it only targets Republicans for its accusations of “hate.”). He merely joined other Republicans in warning that government attempts to crack down on “hate” could discriminate against lawful organizations based on their political viewpoints.)

While touring Jefferson High School in Rockford Monday, dozens of protestors, many wearing red T-shirts, carried signs and gathered outside the school to greet DeVos, according to the Rockford Register Star. “Waubonsee tends to show this image that we have a very diverse student population, but we had someone from the Trump administration who has attacked our communities here,” said Giselle Gonzalez, Waubonsee sophomore and president of the MEChA group at the school. . .“At a place like our college where there is a large population of Latinx students, that’s something the school should have thought twice about before letting her come on campus,” Rodriguez said. “It just doesn’t feel safe to be surprised like that.”)

— Google, Facebook Cozy Up to News Publishers as Regulators Circle Facing mounting antitrust probes, tech platforms offer fees, news-ranking changes media outlets have pursued for years – Lukas I. https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-facebook-cozy-up-to-publishers-as-regulators-circle-11568799001
(FROM THE ARTICLE: ‘We understand the critical importance of rewarding publishers that put their resources into original reporting,’ said Facebook executive Campbell Brown. . .Google last week announced changes to how it ranks stories on its news page to better promote original content, addressing publishers’ long-running complaints that their scoops were often overshadowed by quick rewrites by other outlets. . .Google executives said the prospect of regulation didn’t influence their effort to better promote original news, adding that technological advances had finally allowed the company to address a longstanding concern among publishers. “The challenge of identifying and precisely ranking original reporting has taken years to address and has proven extremely difficult,” said Richard Gingras, Google’s vice president for news. “What has changed is that we now have a lot more technical capabilities than we had 10 years ago.” Facebook has expressed a commitment to improving its partnerships with news outlets, particularly those that publish legitimate, high-quality reporting. “We understand the critical importance of rewarding publishers that put their resources into original reporting, which is why it’s been one of our guiding principles for the news tab since we decided to develop the product earlier this year,” said Campbell Brown, Facebook’s vice president for global news partnerships. “It’s important to get this right.” The outlets Facebook pitched on its news tab include the Journal’s publisher, Dow Jones, people familiar with the matter said. While many in the news industry welcomed Google’s algorithm tweak to help original reporting rank higher on Google News, several said they would reserve judgment until they could ascertain whether the change was making an impact. “With all of these things, you don’t know what it means until you see it in practice,” said David Chavern, president and chief executive of the News Media Alliance, a trade coalition representing some 2,000 news organizations in the U.S. and Canada, including Dow Jones. Mr. Gingras wrote in a blog post last week that Google had made changes to keep stories containing significant original reporting higher in search rankings for longer. . .News Corp, the Journal’s parent company, has been developing a news-aggregation service called Knewz.com that is designed, in part, to promote original reporting over quick rehashes of existing articles. . .“Those of us who do a lot of original reporting are thrilled Google is fixing this frustrating bug, but we’re still waiting for Google and some other platforms to follow Facebook’s lead in recognizing the real value they extract from our original journalism,” said Ben Smith, BuzzFeed’s editor in chief.)

This comes on the heels of Washington Insiders and Republican establishment naming Evelyn Sanguetti to House Republicans’ watch list of their top campaigns. As Washington insiders and Chicago fat cats pick their ponies, Ives and Evelyn Sanguinetti will have to work hard to out-conservative each other to see who can ultimately lock-down the pinnacle: President Trump’s endorsement. “Jeanne Ives and Evelyn Sanguinetti have already made it clear to voters in this district that they’re more interested in getting the support of President Trump and out of touch Washington insiders than they are of people in the 6th Congressional District,” said DCCC Spokesperson, Andy Orellana.)

An important element of the coverage we want to provide is original reporting, an endeavor which requires significant time, effort and resources by the publisher. Some stories can also be both critically important in the impact they can have on our world and difficult to put together, requiring reporters to engage in deep investigative pursuits to dig up facts and sources. These are among the reasons why we aim to support these industry efforts and help people get access to the most authoritative reporting. Recently, we’ve made ranking updates and published changes to our search rater guidelines to help us better recognize original reporting, surface it more prominently in Search and ensure it stays there longer. This means readers interested in the latest news can find the story that started it all, and publishers can benefit from having their original reporting more widely seen.)

https://energynews.us/2019/09/16/midwest/illinois-marijuana-growers-will-face-energy-efficiency-and-reporting-rules/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Marijuana can be an energy intensive crop. The new electricity load to power lighting, heating and ventilation for indoor grow facilities has strained the grid and even caused blackouts in other places after it was legalized. The Illinois law seeks to avoid those problems by mandating efficiency standards and capping the amount of power used per square foot. Clean energy advocates said they were hopeful the law would lead other states to follow suit, though more work is needed between utilities and growers to manage power demand.)

https://medium.com/@tonipreckwinkle_95808/advancing-racial-equity-in-cook-county-closing-the-gap-through-policy-and-practice-9b28a5bd1b38
(FROM THE STATEMENT: In America, the playing field has never — been — level. If you are a woman, if you are Black, if you are Latinx, if you have a disability, if you speak another language, if you were born in another country — in other words, if you are most of the population of Cook County — the playing field has never been level. So instead of using the principle of equality, government must instead focus on equity.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— ERIKA HAROLD, the former GOP attorney general candidate, is not going to run for Rep. John Shimkus’ seat next year. A source close to Harold told Playbook: “She’s not running. It’s not the right time for Erika.” Harold was seen as a shoo-in for the 54th congressional district, having secured 44 percent of the vote in that district when she ran against Attorney General Kwame Raoul last year. Shimkus surprised Republicans when he announced a few weeks ago that he wouldn’t seek re-election. There was an initial scramble for the seat, but now it looks like only state Sen. — Google, Facebook Should Pay For News They Use – Editorial (DIERSEN: He who pays the piper calls the tunes. No one pays me for what I do as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor. I do not want anyone to pay me because I do not want anyone to call my tunes. https://www.editorandpublisher.com/columns/shoptalk-google-facebook-should-pay-for-news-they-use/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The good news is that somebody is once again making money from journalism. The bad news is that it’s not those who are doing the actual work of producing journalism; instead, it’s Google and Facebook, which have figured out how to “monetize” the publication of news. A recent report in a study for the News Media Alliance holds that Google made $4.7 billion from the work of news publishers in 2018 through advertising linked to its search engine results and its Google News page. Journalists ought to see some of that revenue, argues David Chavern, the president and chief executive of the alliance, which represents 2,000 U.S. newspapers. The tech companies “make money off the arrangement,” Chavern said in the New York Times, “and there needs to be a better outcome for news publishers.”)

Therefore, he made a public recommendation to lower the rate. “You don’t want to make [marijuana sales taxes] so high that people are going to go and buy it in other counties,” Franks said. “Also, if it’s really high, it’s going to keep the illicit market going and encourage the illegal behavior that we’re trying to stamp out, so I think it’s bad business, and it’s also bad for our law enforcement.”)
