Potential employers saw me as being draft bait. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment would be approved. By then, my career was already behind schedule. To try to catch up, a) I earned an MBA from Loyola when I was 27 and a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul when I was 31, b) I passed the CPA examination when I was 30 and the Certified Internal Auditor examination when I was 32, and c) I became a licensed CPA when I was 32. But by then, it was too late. The federal government uses up-or-out to rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who do not make GS-13, currently $117,807/year, by age 25. I did not make GS-13 until I was 38.

Yet at Lyons Township High School, sophomores were handed a so-called “non-political quiz” in civics class that looks more like an exercise in political conditioning than education. The assignment, titled “Liberal vs. Conservative Style Non-Political Quiz,” presents students with a series of questions about trivial school-related scenarios – cafeteria food, classroom seating, sports uniforms, school mascots – and forces them into binary “liberal” or “conservative” categories. . .This is presented to 15 and 16-year-old students as a civics lesson. The problem? These questions have absolutely nothing to do with actual liberalism or conservatism in the American civic or political sense. They are arbitrary and misleading parallels that equate curiosity, creativity, or even preference for variety with being a “liberal,” while equating tradition or consistency with being “conservative.” In other words: if your child prefers the same lunch menu every week, they’re “conservative.” If they like trying a new sandwich, suddenly they’re “liberal.” This is not education – it’s indoctrination. . .This is the danger – conditioning young students to see normal preferences and personality traits through a false political lens. And worse, doing so under the guise of a neutral civics lesson, without parents’ knowledge. Civics, Not Social Engineering The goal of civics education should be to teach the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, how government functions, and why civic responsibility matters. It should not be to manipulate teenagers into political identity boxes through cafeteria hypotheticals and mascot debates. Parents need to know this is happening in their children’s classrooms. Thankfully, there are options. Illinois families do not have to accept indoctrination disguised as curriculum. What Parents Can Do Now is not the time to stop paying attention to what your kids are learning in high school. These years are some of the most formative – and potentially the most detrimental – of their lives. You need to be a part of it. Ask questions. Be present. And most importantly: make your kids show you their assignments. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Whatever happens on the GOP side doesn’t really matter. Illinois is solidly Democratic statewide. That reality has driven credible Republicans to the sidelines, leaving ballot spots to be filled by wannabes who range from unprepared dreamers to outright nuts. Republicans bear most of the responsibility for their current state of affairs. In 1994, when Republican Gov. Jim Edgar ran the state, every statewide office was held by a Republican. Corruption under Edgar’s successor — Gov. George Ryan — laid the groundwork for GOP doom. (Ironically, Ryan’s Democratic successor, Rod Blagojevich, was equally corrupt, but his sickening tenure didn’t hurt his party at all. Neither will that of soon-to-be-federal-prison-inmate Michael Madigan, the longtime Democratic speaker of the Illinois House.) Ryan’s corruption was exacerbated by rancor within GOP ranks — so-called real Republicans condemning evil RINOs — Republicans In Name Only. The fight over who is pure and who gets to decide who is pure has been politically poisonous. As a consequence, the GOP is going nowhere. Making matters even worse, GOP decline combined with ruthless Democratic gerrymandering of state and federal legislative districts has made Illinois a one-party state. The Ds don’t mind that because it serves their political self-interest. But Paul Vallas, a Democrat who has run unsuccessfully for governor and mayor of Chicago, argues that “one-party dominance imposed and perpetuated through aggressive (legislative) map manipulation” is bad both for the party and the public. He said cemented Democratic majorities “reward identity politics and stifle dissenting voices.” As a result of that “unchecked power,” Illinois’ political environment has “moved further left all the time,” in a way that favors “government expansion over economic growth.” He said lack of competition between parties has left the ruling party unaccountable for policy choices that have had bad results. They include stagnating job growth, out-migration from Illinois by higher-income earners looking for a better life elsewhere, and “dozens of tax and fee increases” since 2019 that generated billions in new revenue but did little to solve the state’s financial woes. Not enough people realize it, but Illinois is a mess that will only get messier absent changes as seismic as they are unlikely.)
