(FROM THE ARTICLE: Approximately 100 local veterans of World War II and the Korean War got their due and the Honor Flight Chicago got its financial backing at the DuPage Veterans Foundation’s sixth annual fundraiser recently. Richard Jorgensen, the president of the foundation, told the DuPage Policy Journal that the event met its goals with flying colors. “We considered it to be a very successful event,” he said. “Our event is really two things: one, to honor World War I and Korea War-era veterans for their service, and second, it is a fundraiser to donate the money to Honor Flight Chicago. Those were the two goals of our event.” Jorgensen said the fundraiser drew more than 1,000 attendees, including Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Chicago radio talk show host Dan Proft. Proft is a principal of Local Government Information Services, which owns this publication. Jorgensen said he estimated the fundraiser garnered approximately $55,000 this year, adding to the more than $200,000 it has raised through past events.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: IT’S BECOME CLEAR IN RECENT MONTHS that Donald Trump’s growling at the national press has, in many ways, backfired. The New York Times and The Washington Post are producing exceptional and indignant stories about the new administration. Subscriptions have surged. Cable news ratings are hitting record highs. And nonprofit outlets like Mother Jones and ProPublica have seen a major increase in donations. Times Editor Dean Baquet put it this way in late February: “There was a long time when the press wondered about its place in society. . . What’s happened in the last couple of months, I have to say, has been tremendous for news organizations. Our mission is clearer than it’s ever been.” I’m excited about the press’s reinvigoration, too, but I’m also worried about Trump’s anti-press words and deeds—and their trickle-down consequences for state and local journalists. I contacted 16 editors or publishers of state and local newspapers in California, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas to ask if their papers had seen post-election bumps in subscriptions or readership. Their circulations range from 8,000 to 200,000 daily. Seven responded, and only one reported growth. The others didn’t know why they hadn’t seen growth or said their local focus might be to blame. I don’t want to lean too heavily on these results, which are anecdotal. But they only add to my concern that Trump’s anti-press antics will inspire unprecedented attempts to delegitimize the state and local press.)

SEE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2017-independence-day-celebration-parade-entry-tickets-31882733113  So far, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee and James Mendrick for DuPage County Sheriff have entries.  Since I moved to Wheaton in 1978, I have encouraged Republican candidates and elected officials to have entries in Wheaton’s Independence Day Parades.  This year, for the 12th year in a row, I will be seeking donations from Republicans so that “DuPage Republicans” can again be one of the two $2,500 “Star” sponsors and again sponsor the Wheaton high school bands and the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums parade entries.  According to the Wheaton Park District which organizes the July 3 fireworks and July 4 parade, being a $2,500 “Star” sponsor includes: “Media Print Advertisements, Social Media Promotion, Website Preference, Email Blasts, Event Posters/Flyers, Press Release, 10×10 Booth on July 3, Inclusion in Announcements on July 3, Premium Seating at Graf Park for July 3 Fireworks, Event Sponsor Banners,” and more.  Outstandingly, again this year Tim Whelan will coordinate Republican use of the 10×10 booth at the fireworks.  This year again, I will hand deliver flyers to the residences and businesses on the parade route that will list the Republican entries in the parade and the Republicans who helped sponsor entries. The April report, “The Changing Economics and Demographics of Young Adulthood: 1975-2016,” puts numbers to some often-discussed aspects of today’s millennial generation — ones that may inspire either frustration, sympathy or nodding approval from their baby boomer parents, who themselves often broke with their parents’ traditions. Examining census and other survey data about the 18-to-34 age group, the report notes: — The percentage of women ages 20-24 who are married fell from 57 percent in 1976 to 17 percent in 2014, while those with a child fell from 31 percent to 25 percent. It is thus more common for a 25-year-old woman to be a mother than a wife. — About one of three 18-to-34-year-olds relies on parents’ financial help, and a similar proportion live in their parents’ homes. The percentage living independently fell from 51 percent in 2005 to 41 percent in 2015. — The economic situation of young men has plummeted, with 41 percent of those ages 25-34 earning less than $30,000 annually, compared to just 25 percent who were below that inflation-adjusted threshold in 1975. The status of women has spiked, meanwhile, as only 14 percent in that age group are homemakers now compared to 43 percent in 1975. Despite economic gains compared to young men, however, their earnings still trail those of males. — Sharing a home with an unmarried partner has been the fastest-growing living arrangement over the past four decades, used by 12 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds in 2016 compared to less than 1 percent in 1975. The age group’s most common living arrangement, however, is living with parents, which has overtaken living with a spouse. The report pointed out how today’s millennials generally fail to reach benchmarks of adult independence by an age that most of society considers ideal. A 2012 survey of the U.S. population, for instance, found 21 was deemed the ideal age of financial independence from parents, but only 29 percent of 21-year-olds currently achieve that. And 22 was the consensus as the ideal age of obtaining full-time employment, but only 37 percent have such jobs by that age. Similarly, wide gaps show up for getting married and becoming a parent. Putting together four yardsticks by which someone might fully embrace adulthood — a job, marriage, parenthood and living apart from parents — nearly half of 25-to-34-year-olds could claim all of those in 1975, but fewer than one-fourth could in 2016, according to the report.)

In the complaint, filed May 27, 2016, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Robinson asks for $75,000 in compensation, plus attorney’s fees and punitive damages. She names Bobkiewicz, the City of Evanston, city attorney W. Grant Farrar and human resources manager Jennifer Lin as defendants. According to the lawsuit, Robinson was public works director for Evanston from March 2010 until August 2015. The suit said that she was one of “three African-American employees at the department director level reporting directly to Bobkiewicz.” The complaint reads that Robinson’s position was eliminated, “effective immediately,” in August 2015 after Bobkiewicz stated “that the city planned to combine public works and utilities into one department named the public works agency.” But the lawsuit says the City Council did not approve the “proposed reorganization” until September 2015. Robinson alleges that Bobkiewicz “discriminated against her on the basis of race” and “retaliated against her” “for filing complaints about racial discrimination,” according to court documents.)

Fascists Get Out.” Close to 200 students kept up the noise for more than an hour in a University at Buffalo lecture hall on May 1, mostly drowning out the evening’s featured speaker, Robert Spencer, a conservative author and blogger who espouses a dark view of Islam. The event appeared to follow a familiar script, in which a large contingent of liberals muzzles a provocative speaker invited by a small conservative student club. But the propelling force behind the event — and a number of recent heat-seeking speeches on college campuses — was a national conservative group that is well funded, highly organized and on a mission, in its words, to “restore sanity at your school.” The group, the Young America’s Foundation, had paid Mr. Spencer’s $2,000 fee, trained the student leader who organized the event and provided literature for distribution. Other than the possibility of outside interference, little had been left to chance. The speeches are a part of the group’s mission of grooming future conservative leaders — Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser, are among its alumni — and its long list of donors has included the television game show host Pat Sajak, the novelist Tom Clancy, the billionaire brothers David H. and Charles G. Koch, and the Amway billionaires Richard and Helen Devos, who gave $10 million to endow the Reagan Ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., which the foundation runs as a preserve. (Their daughter-in-law, Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education, is not a donor, the group says.) Over the past two years, armed with a $16 million infusion from the estate of an orthodontist in California, Robert Ruhe, the organization has doubled its programming, including campus speeches. In 2016 that meant 111 speakers on 77 campuses. On the group’s website, it boasted of “dispatching” 31 speakers to colleges last month alone. In that time, the speakers have gotten edgier, more in-your-face and sometimes even meanspirited. Among them is Ann Coulter, whose canceled speech last month at the University of California, Berkeley, led the foundation, which was covering most of her $20,000 fee, to sue the college, arguing that it had violated the First Amendment in its failure to provide a suitable time and place for the event. The resulting clashes on university campuses, including protests and efforts to block speeches, have raised free speech questions. And at Berkeley, even liberals who oppose Ms. Coulter’s viewpoints said her speech should have been allowed to proceed. In the meantime, protesters have questioned whether such events are cynically intended to provoke reactions. “It’s part of a larger systematic and extremely well-funded effort to disrupt public universities and create tension among student groups on campus,” said Alexandra Prince, a doctoral student at Buffalo who circulated a petition to block Mr. Spencer.)
