— Trump Tower Rally To Protest Big-Money Donald Trump Fundraiser – David Matthews  (DIERSEN: Of course, needless-to-say, this a rally to promote hatred if not to promote violence against Trump and against his supporters. One could argue that if you are a Trump supporter, you should get a concealed carry permit to protect yourself from anti-Trumps.  Anti-Trumps are moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means.  Anti-Trumps are disciples of Saul Alinsky.  Anti-Trumps are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160711/downtown/trump-tower-rally-protest-big-money-donald-trump-fundraiser
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump will be in town for a big-ticket fundraiser Tuesday. So will protesters. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-9th) sent an email to constituents calling for a “Chicago Trumps Hate” rally starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday near Trump’s namesake tower at Wabash Avenue and Wacker Drive. The rally is in response to Trump’s fundraiser here that same day, in which guests will pay from $10,000 to $100,000 to fete the presumptive Republican nominee for president. “In light of everything that’s been happening, our country needs unity more than ever,” Ben Head, Schakowsky’s political director, said Monday afternoon. “Donald Trump is the exact opposite, he’s tearing us apart.” Tuesday will mark Trump’s first appearance here since a political rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago was canceled out of “safety” reasons in March. Thousands of protesters swarmed the venue and outside, prompting Trump to cancel the event then. Other Chicagoans have since stepped up less organized forms of protest, ranging from flipping off the Trump International Hotel & Tower, 401 N. Wabash Ave., to making satirical videos, piñatas and toilets lampooning the controversial presidential candidate. Trump, who’s stepped up his campaign fundraising in recent weeks, will charge from $10,000 to $100,000 for his Tuesday fundraiser, whose location is only being disclosed to donors, according to the Sun-Times. Trump is expected to receive the Republican Party’s nomination for president at the party’s convention next week. A Trump spokeswoman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Trump tweets about Chicago crime, hours before fundraiser here – Leonor Vivanco
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-trump-chicago-tweet-met-0712-20160712-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Presidential candidate Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday morning about Chicago’s crime problem hours before he was scheduled to attend a private fundraiser in the city — one that may draw protests. “Crime is out of control, and rapidly getting worse. Look what is going on in Chicago and our inner cities. Not good!” he tweeted. He later followed up that tweet with another: “This election is a choice between law, order & safety – or chaos, crime & violence. I will make America safe again for everyone. #ImWithYou”  So far this year, more than 2,100 people have been shot compared to more than 2,900 people for the entire year of 2015, according to Tribune data. The homicide tally is at 342 people for the first half of the year, a pace not seen since the late 1990s. New York and Los Angeles combined have fewer shooting and homicide victims than Chicago this year so far. A year ago, Trump told the Tribune Editorial Board that crime is damaging the city’s reputation. “You’ve got to stop it. You’re not going to stop it by being nice. You’re going to stop it by being one tough son of a bitch,” Trump said at the time. During the June 2015 appearance before the editorial board, Trump acknowledged there have been cases of police brutality but said he believed police today are not as tough as when he was growing up in the mid-1960s. “You need tough cookies. These are tough kids. These are not babies. These are tough, tough kids,” he said at the time. “If they saw you walking down the street, they wouldn’t give a damn about you,” he said then. “You can’t be so gentle with these people.” “I’m a big fan of the police, but I think the police now are afraid to act. They’re afraid to be tough.” Tuesday’s fundraiser in Chicago marks Trump’s first campaign-related visit to Chicago since the canceled rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where supporters and protesters converged in March. Tickets are $10,000 to attend, $25,000 to get a photo with a candidate and $100,000 to be part of a VIP Roundtable that includes photos and two lunch tickets, according to an invitation for the event. A protest is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday morning outside downtown’s Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago organized by a number of community leaders calling on Trump to end his divisive rhetoric. Among the scheduled speakers are Illinois National Organization for Women president Susan Straus, SEIU Healthcare Illinois executive vice president Greg Kelley and Inner-City Muslim Action Network executive director Rami Nashashibi, according to news releases issued about the planned protest. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D – IL) is in Washington, D.C. but helped spread word of the event by emailing her constituents. “She feels strongly Trump’s message is overly divisive at a time when our nation needs unity,” said Ben Head, the congresswoman’s political director.)
— Another prominent Illinois Republican, Kirk Dillard, to skip Trump convention – John Byrne  (DIERSEN: QUESTION: Which individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries glorify and praise anti-Trumps?  ANSWER: Individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-kirk-dillard-donald-trump-convention-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Add former governor hopeful Kirk Dillard to the list of prominent Republicans who won’t be heading to the GOP convention for the formal nomination of polarizing presidential candidate Donald Trump — and to the list of those who don’t want to talk about why they won’t be there. Dillard, who chairs the Regional Transportation Authority after losing the 2014 Republican primary for governor to eventual winner Bruce Rauner, said he might attend a reception in Cleveland for transit officials. But he won’t be going to the convention itself, which runs from July 18-21. Asked Monday why he won’t go to the convention to support Trump, Dillard paused, smiled at a group of reporters and said, “You know, I’ll get to you later on that,” before walking away. Dillard ran in the March 15 primary as a delegate for Jeb Bush, who had long folded his tent by then (the delegate filing deadline is well before the primaries start and candidates drop out along the way). Dillard joins Rauner, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Robert Dold, who faces a tough re-election effort in the North Shore 10th District, on the list of Illinois Republicans staying away from the convention.)
— IRS asked to probe Donald Trump’s purchase of helmet with money meant for charity – David A. Fahrenthold  (DIERSEN: For the last 11 years, I have raised money from Republicans to help sponsor Wheaton’s Independence Day parades.  What do you say to those who oppose that?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-donald-trump-charity-20160712-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Watchdog group with ties to Democrats has asked the IRS to investigate Donald Trump’s charitable foundation over a report that Trump used money meant for charity to buy a football helmet signed by former NFL star Tim Tebow. “What’s unambiguous is that Mr. Trump … manager and fiduciary of the Foundation’s charitable assets, used Foundation dollars to purchase football memorabilia that he personally coveted,” wrote Brad Woodhouse of the American Democracy Legal Fund, in a letter to the IRS. Woodhouse is a longtime Democratic operative.  The liberal watchdog said that Trump appeared to have violated rules against “self-dealing,” which are designed to keep charity leaders from using their nonprofits to help themselves. It asked that the IRS open an investigation, which could lead to tax penalties for Trump, the foundation’s president.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— ‘Play to pay’ politics is bad, but it works: business survey – GREG HINZ  (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. In Illinois, if you seek or accept anything of value from any individual, organization, or company to anything against the Illinois Republican Party platform, you should not seek or hold any kind of government office or political office as a Republican.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160711/BLOGS02/160719976/chicagos-pay-to-play-politics-works-say-business-execs-in-new-survey
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chicago area business leaders strongly believe that donating to a local politician or hiring a high-powered lobbyist adds to the city’s already serious corruption problems. But, according to a new survey, they overwhelmingly also believe that paying to play works. The survey also finds that business leaders by an 8-to-1 margin say that “things in Chicago are . . . off on the wrong track,” with 79 percent negative and just 10 percent positive. The online survey of 428 Chicago-area decision-makers was conducted by Crain’s Custom Media in May for the Committee of Economic Development of the Conference Board, a nonpartisan, business-led policy group. Those polled by email indicated that their companies had at least $1 million in revenue last year and that they either hold a top management slot or serve on the firm’s board. The results “are indicative of the constant sort of low-level scandals that seem to happen on a regular basis in Chicago,” said committee senior advisor Cindy Canary, a well known local reformer. “I don’t think we’re going to see corporate leaders unilaterally disarming,” she added. “But I do think people can come to the table to discuss reform.” Overall, these business execs have a low opinion of Chicago government. For instance, 92 percent say that the influence of money in Chicago politics is “bad,” with a majority of 53 percent indicating things are getting worse. Similarly, 88 percent say the “ethical behavior” of Chicago officials over the past five years is at least a “somewhat serious issue,” 92 percent say big campaign donors add to Chicago corruption, 93 percent say that lobbying city officials impacts the level of city corruption, and 92 percent agree that the city suffers from “crony capitalism . . . favoritism in the form of tax breaks, government grants and other incentives.” Asked whether officials listen more to voters or lobbyists, 81 percent answer lobbyists.)

http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Donald-Trump-Fundraiser-Chicago–386332871.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will host a big-ticket fundraiser Tuesday in Chicago, his first campaign trip to the Windy City since his canceled rally at the UIC Pavilion in March erupted in protests and fights. Tickets for the event range from $10,000 to $100,000, according to Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times. The lunch fundraiser will be held at an undisclosed location. Donors making a $10,000 donation to Trump’s campaign will receive a ticket for Tuesday’s lunch, while a $25,000 donation yields two tickets and a photo opportunity. The biggest ticket, $100,000, gets donors access to a VIP roundtable, photo opportunity and two tickets to the lunch. Trump last visited Chicago in the lead-up to the March 15 primary. The divisive billionaire cancelled a rally at the last minute after protesters and supporters clashed at the UIC Pavilion, where the event was scheduled to take place. Nevertheless, Trump won the state’s Republican primary with nearly 39 percent of the vote. Trump’s campaign was short on details about Tuesday’s event, only noting that it was “closed to the press.” The event is being hosted by Trump Victory Illinois finance chairman Ron Gidwitz, a powerful GOP fundraiser in Illinois. Trump’s opponent, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, will host her own big-ticket fundraiser Wednesday in Wilmette. The fundraiser will be hosted by Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts and her wife, Brooke.)

— GOP platform fight gets heated over LGBT rights – Jonathan Easley
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/287271-gop-platform-fight-gets-heated-over-lgbt-rights
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans crafting a party platform on Monday argued over religious liberty, gay marriage and LGBT rights, highlighting divisions in the party over social issues. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), chairman of the Platform Committee, floated in and out of conference rooms at the cavernous Huntington Convention Center to oversee the skirmishes that broke out among delegates over the party’s planks. The most heated exchanges took place in a subcommittee responsible for laying out the GOP platform on social issues. The majority of the panel was made up of hard-line social conservatives such as Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. Perkins and other social conservatives on the panel had a strong enough majority to push through the bulk of the measures they sought. But the Perkins wing was met with vocal opposition from Annie Dickerson, an adviser to billionaire GOP donor Paul Singer, who is a proponent of gay marriage and other issues championed by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Dickerson fumed as her socially liberal proposals went down and the socially conservative measures she opposed sailed through the subcommittee. At one point, Dickerson, who has adopted children, accused others on the committee of “blatant discrimination” over an amendment that would keep publicly funded adoption agencies from giving custody of children to gay couples. “We need children to be adopted, so hooray to the gay community for trying to raise children in a happy and stable home,” Dickerson said. “I object to allowing patent discrimination against gays over the right to adopt. … This is blatant discrimination and should not be in our platform.”  Dickerson lost that battle and essentially every other battle she waged. At times she stared down Perkins and expressed exasperation after votes went against her. “Unbelievable,” she said after the adoption measure passed. The 16-member subcommittee, made up of 13 women and three men, rejected Dickerson’s request to remove language in the platform that “salutes” states like North Carolina for passing controversial bathroom laws that critics say discriminate against transgender people. She protested language that said the party supports “traditional marriage and the families a husband and wife create,” arguing instead for a provision that said children should be “raised in a loving and stable home.”  And she argued against having language in the platform that opposes the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. “They’re not going to change the ruling,” Dickerson said. “I know it’s hard, but that’s the law of the land.” But Dickerson was overpowered every step of the way, winning only occasional support from a handful of other women on the panel. One delegate cited the Ten Commandments to argue against Dickerson’s proposal to remove language from the platform about how a “mother and father” provide the best environment in which to raise children. “The social code of justice for the last 5,000 years is based on the Ten Commandments, which says ‘mother and father,’ ” the delegate said. “I just don’t think you can dispute that.” Discussions about social issues also sprang up in the subcommittee tasked with developing the party’s economic plank. Ohio delegate David Johnson, who owns a small business in the state, criticized what he characterized as federal government overreach in responding to transgender bathroom laws. “I hope we’re not getting this politically correct crap about transgender bathrooms,” he said during a debate about how to word a business nondiscrimination clause. “Any press person who comes to me and says, do you support that? My answer is no. If we’re telling employers to make provisions for 16 different people—“ “You’d have 16 different bathrooms,” another delegate said. “However, we do support nondiscrimination,” responded Andy Puzder, the chairman of the subcommittee and CEO of CKE Restaurants, which owns the Carl’s Jr. and Hardees brands. Republican Party leaders are working to hammer out a platform that stays true to core conservative principles while also fitting the mold of their unconventional presumptive presidential nominee and the nation’s rapidly changing culture.)

Evidence: Illinois hasn’t backed a Republican presidential candidate since 1988. Clinton led Trump by 25 percentage points in a poll in early March. Trump’s own political director is not focusing on the state, and the Republican National Committee has not sent any paid staffers. Advantage: Clinton. The poll is more out-of-date than in some other states, but there’s little evidence things have changed since then.)

http://www.centralillinoisproud.com/news/draft-gop-platform-drops-call-for-marriage-amendment
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And in a major shift, the platform would drop the pursuit of a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman, opting instead to oppose the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage and calling on the matter to be decided by the states. . .The language was shared with members of the Platform Committee by the Republican National Committee at an orientation on Sunday night as the events in Cleveland began. The document will form the basis of discussions for the panel, which will meet this week to adapt the language and vote on a final proposal, which will then go before the full convention next week.)

INSIDE HIGHER EDUCATION
— College and the New Class Divide  Contrary to college standing as an open thoroughfare for Americans wanting to improve their lives, it has become a gated toll road primarily available to those from middle-class and upper-class families, argues Jeffrey J. Williams. (DIERSEN: Neither of my outstanding parents attended college.  My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma.  My mother never attended high school.  Nevertheless, my critics/opponents shout that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and that I have always been privileged.)
https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2016/07/11/how-college-helping-create-class-divide-america-essay
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Those who have gone to college beget those who go to college: if your parents didn’t go to college, you are much more likely to work at or near minimum wage. Only about 9 percent of those from the lowest quartile of wealth complete college degrees, whereas about three-quarters from the top quartile do. A key impediment has been the exponential rise of tuition prices since the 1970s, at several times the rate of inflation, correlated with the reduction of public support, which in turn has brought the steep increase in student debt and student work hours.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some 500 alumni and students at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School have signed a letter rebuking Donald Trump for “xenophobia, sexism, racism, and other forms of bigotry that you have actively and implicitly endorsed in your campaign.”  Trump, a Wharton graduate and the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has spoken glowingly of his experience at the renowned business school. Two of his children also studied there. It was not clear to what extent Wharton graduates and students writ large are dismayed by Trump’s candidacy and his affiliation with the school. While the letter had more than 500 signatories as of Saturday, Wharton itself claims to have about 94,000 alumni from 152 countries.)

Last week the firm named David Solomon, 47, to head the corporate and securities practice, taking over from Mary Wasik, who at 60 had hit the firm’s age ceiling for holding a top management spot. At the same time, Laura Friedel, 43, stepped in to run Levenfeld’s labor and employment practice. The 60-lawyer firm with clients like Barrington and Bridgeview banks is one of handful in the Chicago market to lay out age restrictions and term limits for key leadership positions. Partners established the policy to make it easier for younger lawyers to take over management of the firm from their predecessors. Levenfeld Executive Director Angela Hickey said it is an issue many small and midsize law firms fail to address. “Most firms think of succession plans when the executive committee is 70,” she said.)

https://illinoisfamily.org/homosexuality/iowa-civil-rights-commission-goes-churches/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The kind of draconian restrictions of speech and religious rights that corrupt Canadian governance are  arriving bit by corroded bit on America’s church steps sooner than many expected and in, of all places,  Iowa. Make no mistake though, this is coming to every state. Iowa, like many other states, has a law banning discrimination based on, among other conditions, “sexual orientation” and “gender identity,” in places of public accommodation. To be clear, the rhetorical contrivance “sexual orientation” really means “subjective homoerotic attraction and volitional homoerotic acts,”* and the rhetorical contrivance “gender identity” really means “the subjective desire to be the opposite sex or no sex,” both of which are ontological impossibilities. Iowa also has a Civil Rights Commission that has issued “guidance” on how the state law and corresponding city codes affect churches. It states that the anti-discrimination law—including its provisions regarding homoerotic feelings and sex-rejection—does, in fact, apply to churches. Fortunately, the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the Fort Des Moines Church of Christ to prevent the civil rights commission and Iowa attorney general “from forcing Fort Des Moines to use its facility in a way that violates its religious beliefs about human sexuality.” Here are some of the tricksy ways the Iowa Civil Rights Commission seeks to violate the civil rights of Christians.)

http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/286831-gop-senator-touts-break-from-trump
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) is highlighting his split from presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump as an example of his independence as he runs for reelection. “My independence is pretty clearly demonstrated when I de-endorsed Donald Trump,” the Illinois Republican told a local radio station. “I felt Donald Trump was too bigoted and racist for the land of Lincoln.” Kirk’s comments come as Senate Republicans meet with Trump at the National Republican Senatorial Committee. The Illinois Republican is one of a handful of vulnerable GOP senators who aren’t attending the closed-door sit-down. Kirk — widely considered one of this year’s most endangered GOP incumbents — was the first, and only, Republican senator to take back his endorsement of Trump from earlier this year. “I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world,” Kirk said in a statement in June. The Illinois Republican has repeatedly broken from his party as he runs for reelection on issues including Planned Parenthood and gun control. He also played up his decision to buck Trump in an ad last month. Kirk faces an uphill battle for reelection against Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) in a state widely expected to be carried by Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, in November. Republicans are defending 24 Senate seats. Democrat need to net five — or flip four and retain the White House — to win back the majority. While Kirk isn’t eager to tie himself to Trump, he also took a swing at Clinton over her use of a private email server while secretary of State. He added in the radio interview: “Democrats should really rebuke her, to leave their whole party to that level of risk.”)

FRONT PAGE MAGAZINE
— THE WORST SMEAR SITE IN AMERICA  The Southern Poverty Law Center smears patriots and provides cover for the nation’s enemies. – Matthew Vadum
http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/263332/worst-smear-site-america-matthew-vadum
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The far-left Southern Poverty Law Center relentlessly promotes the Big Lie, wildly popular in the media, that conservative Americans are racists and the real threat to the nation rather than Islamic terrorists. The group claims the principal enemies of the American people are presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, conservatives like David Horowitz, and the Tea Party movement. The SPLC is a shamelessly hypocritical leftist attack machine funded by radical speculator George Soros and a rogue’s gallery of rich people and established philanthropies that want to fundamentally transform America. The fabulously wealthy 501(c)(3) nonprofit has an astounding one third of a billion dollars ($338 million) in assets, as well as investments in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, two offshore tax havens the Left loves to attack (but only when non-leftists stash cash there). The Center characterizes all opposition to immigration and open borders as symptomatic of hate and all political expression of those views to be hate speech. In other words, if you disagree with founder Morris Dees and his minions you are evil and worthy of public condemnation. It may take some intellectual toughness to insist that the nation has the right to decide who may or may not cross its borders, but it’s not hate. Following the Islamist massacre at a gay club in Orlando a fortnight ago, the group has played an integral role in the Left’s propaganda push aimed at taking the focus away from gay-hating Islam and finding creative ways to blame conservatives and Republicans for the slaughter. Two days after Orlando as a sea of rainbow flags rivaling those that washed over Facebook and Twitter following the Supreme Court’s pro-same sex marriage ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges swept over social media, David Dinielli, deputy legal director of SPLC’s LGBT Rights Project, tossed out a red herring as he whined amidst a national outpouring of grief that somehow politicians weren’t doing enough to characterize the attack as an assault on the gay community. Instead of blaming Muslim terrorist Omar Mateen, reportedly a registered Democrat, for the attack, Dinielli blamed people like Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) instead. Many politicians were secretly delighted so many gays were killed, he implied. “[M]any who offered their ‘thoughts and prayers’ know exactly what they are doing. They are trading on political expediency. The demonization of gay, lesbian, and transgender Americans pays, politically.” But this “demonization” of the LGBT community that the Southern Poverty Law Center complains of is pure paranoid fantasy. Anyone who followed media coverage in the days following the June 12 incident knows that cable TV and other media were filled with wall-to-wall denunciations of the Muslim terrorist Omar Mateen by politicians who acknowledged the sexual orientation of the victims whether explicitly or implicitly. Even those not generally sympathetic to gay rights made it clear that murder, including the murder of people based on their sexual preference, was morally abhorrent. None of this is surprising to those of us who have been tracking the SPLC’s adventures in vilification and defamation over the years. The SPLC is waging a scorched-earth war against Donald Trump. The group routinely and baselessly associates Trump with neo-Nazis, white nationalists, and other marginal political actors it calls “the racist right.” Pointing out that these fringe figures back Trump in the election is the most obvious kind of smear. The Left did the same thing to Ronald Reagan in 1984 when the Ku Klux Klan offered him its unwanted endorsement. Reagan waited a full two weeks to denounce the KKK and reject its endorsement. But Trump waited barely a day after a bungled CNN interview Feb. 28 in which Jake Tapper asked him if he would reject the Klan’s endorsement of him. Trump gave a less than clear answer to Tapper, blaming a “bad earpiece” that led him to misunderstand the question. The very next day Trump asked “How many times do I have to continue to disavow people?” and attacked the KKK on Michael Savage’s radio show. Replying to a question, he said “yeah, totally denounce, and I disavowed it, and I’ve disavowed it numerous times, and I’ve disavowed it on Twitter and on Facebook and all over the place but people refuse to accept it.” The SPLC’s annual report on “hate” in America this year features a cover picture of Trump, a man the group blames for increasing hate in the U.S. According to the left-wing Guardian (UK), “the image underscores a theme laid out by the report’s author, about how hate speech has invaded mainstream political discourse in a way that might have shocked many even a year ago.” “I have been writing these Year in Hate and Extremism essays for 20 years now, and only very rarely, if at all, have we seen a year like last year,” said SPLC senior fellow Mark Potok. Hate, of course, isn’t exactly a precise concept in the world of politics and ideology, and the SPLC likes it that way because then it has wide latitude to malign and slander its targets. Its leaders are no doubt proud that Pentagon training materials borrow from SPLC reports and refer to extremists as “haters,” a colloquialism that appears in hip hop music and in humorous graphic art posted on the Internet. Trump is definitely a hater, according to the Center. On April 4 its blog cited his “continued embrace of racist and extremist ideas” and accused him of turning “the political landscape on its side and introduced countless numbers to hate speech and racist conspiracy theories.” It’s all spin and lies. The SPLC is still bellyaching over the courageous, electrifying anti-illegal immigration speech Trump gave last summer when launching his campaign. In it Trump said many of the Mexicans crossing illegally into the U.S. are “people that have lots of problems” who bring drugs and crime with them and that some are “rapists.” Trump’s statements are demonstrably true. He wasn’t saying all Mexicans are criminals, just many of the Mexicans sneaking into the country. This isn’t racism: it is empirical fact. Many of the so-called hate groups the SPLC monitors are so labeled because they fail to genuflect before political correctness. The Center labels as hate groups respectable right-leaning organizations such as the Center for Security Policy (CSP), Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), American Freedom Defense Initiative, and the David Horowitz Freedom Center, which publishes FrontPage. The Southern Poverty Law Center frequently targets New York-based civil rights attorney David Yerushalmi, a co-founder of the American Freedom Law Center and counsel to CSP. In 2011 the SPLC named Yerushalmi to its 10-member “Anti-Muslim Inner Circle.” Among the other “members” of the inner circle are David Horowitz, Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller, and Brigitte Gabriel. According to the Center, the rhetoric these individuals use “reveals how doggedly this group works to provoke and guide populist anger over what is seen as the threat posed by the 0.6% of Americans who are Muslim — an agenda that goes beyond reasonable concern about terrorism into the realm of demonization.” The Guardian ran a story last week attacking Yerushalmi for daring to countersue a group of grandstanding Muslim women trying to shake down a Laguna Beach, Calif. café. The women filed a discrimination lawsuit claiming they were given the bum’s rush at the establishment because they were wearing hijabs. The café counters that the women violated the 45-minute seating time limit and that other headscarf-clad women present were not asked to leave. The newspaper regurgitated SPLC writings on Yerushalmi who maintains that the women’s lawyers are “ambulance-chasers” involved in “an extortion.” It reported: “Asked about the SPLC’s characterization of him, Yerushalmi said that he ‘represents a lot of Muslims.’ “I represent Muslim Americans, running from jihad and seeking asylum. If you want to say I’m an anti-jihad lawyer, you’re 100% right,” he continued. “Am I anti-Sharia? Yes, I am. Am I anti-Muslim? Not if he doesn’t have a gun in his hand shooting at me.’ “Yerushalmi alleged that the suit against Urth Caffe was part of a wider “civilizational jihad” waged by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) which aims, he said, “to weaken western civilization.” The SPLC never tires of trying to assassinate the character of David Horowitz. A May 24, 2014 profile calls him “the godfather of the modern anti-Muslim movement.”  Without presenting a shred of useful evidence, the Center separately smears Horowitz as “a driving force of the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and anti-black movements.”  Horowitz rejects these characterizations. On Monday he told this writer: “I’m called the godfather of the anti-Muslim movement, which puts a target on my back, whereas out of million words and scores of hours of speeches on the subject they couldn’t find one sentence to back up their claim.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has been playing this dangerous game for a long time. It doesn’t care if it gets innocent Americans killed. It came close to getting people killed four years ago. SPLC reports inspired left-wing terrorist Floyd Lee Corkins II to shoot up the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the Family Research Council four years ago. The Center identified FRC as a “hate group” not because it actually hates anyone but because it opposes same-sex marriage. Even the reliably left-wing Dana Milbank rejected that designation for FRC in an Aug. 16, 2012 Washington Post column, calling that group “a mainstream conservative think tank.” “I disagree with the Family Research Council’s views on gays and lesbians,” he wrote. “But it’s absurd to put the group, as the law center does, in the same category as Aryan Nations, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Stormfront and the Westboro Baptist Church.” Corkins apparently disagreed. Upon entering FRC’s office he reportedly said “I don’t like your politics” and shot a black Christian security guard who managed to subdue him and lived to forgive him. Later Corkins told investigators “Southern Poverty Law lists anti-gay groups,” the Washington Examiner reported at the time. “I found them online, did a little research, went to the website, stuff like that.” The gay rights-avenging shooter had planned to kill as many FRC staffers as possible and smear Chick-fil-A sandwiches — his backpack contained 15 of them — on their faces as a political statement. He chose that fast food chain whose management is unabashedly Christian because its president was revealed to be a supporter of traditional marriage. Corkins was convicted of terrorism in 2013 and sentenced to 25 years in prison. And when the next Floyd Corkins comes along and actually succeeds in killing someone targeted by the Southern Poverty Law Center, its staffers will direct blame elsewhere. Scapegoating is what they do best.)

— Federal Government Out of Control Again – Bruce Bialosky  (DIERSEN: Constructively, since 1997, the Democrats who run GAO have had me on administrative leave.  Constructively, since 1997, the Democrats who run GAO have forced the Civil Service Retirement System to pay me $50,712 a year to stay home and to not come to work at GAO.  What do Bialosky, Von Ah, and you have to say about that?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Our federal government suffers from lack of focus trying to do too many things while doing too many poorly. This behemoth allows for huge waste that gets buried in the apathy bred by the very definition of what happens when you are spending OPM (other people’s money). The GAO (Government Accountability Office) recently released a report about administrative leave in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that boggles the mind. Though the Washington Post covered the story, my inner soul told me as staggering as their report was they still were probably doing an inadequate job. Thus, I dug in to find the real story of how our money is being abused. The report was written by a team lead by Andrew Von Ah, the acting director of Homeland Security and Justice at the GAO. Mr. Von Ah was surprisingly responsive for a federal government employee. We connected a couple of times allowing me to address some of my insights from the 34-page report. The report focused only on administrative leave for the DHS. Administrative leave is defined as any paid leave that is not sick leave or vacation leave. What alarmed people was that, over the five years of the study (from 2011-2015), 116 DHS employees were on administrative leave for more than a year costing us over $19.8 million. From all appearances the agency did not have discernible consistent controls over how people were put on admin leave nor how long they stayed on leave.)

DENVER SPRINGS GAZETTE
— That ‘racist’ Summit in Denver – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Democrats run America.  Democrats run Illinois.  Democrats run Cook County.  Democrats run Chicago.  Sooner or later, if not already, Democrats will say that you are a racist, a bigot, a hater, and even worse things if you do not promote Democrats. How have those who do not promote Democrats reacted to that?  How are those who do not promote Democrats reacting to that?  How will those who do not promote Democrats react to that?  Will those who do not promote Democrats a) go to court and get restraining orders against Democrats, b) file lawsuits against Democrats charging them with slander, or c) take stronger actions?  From what I see, ever-increasingly, if a Democrat says that you are a racist, a bigot, a hater, or worse things, a) you will be fired if you have a job, b) you will not be able to get a job, and c) even worse things will happen to you.)
http://gazette.com/editorial-that-racist-summit-in-denver/article/1579534
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: White male protesters stood outside the Colorado Convention Center during the Western Conservative Summit, protesting a “racist” event going on inside. Shouting through bullhorns and waving obscene signs, with fists in the air, the protests occasionally turned violent as police formed a wall between the mob and Summit attendees Friday night. Protesters, mostly motivated by the presence of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, conveyed a central theme: Conservatives are old, white, racist men of privilege. Signs said “Down with This Sort of Thing,” “America was Never Great” and “Purge White Supremacy.” Inside, an audience of thousands anxiously awaited Saturday night’s speech by Colorado’s Republican nominee for the United States Senate. He is Darryl Glenn, a black man who grew up in Colorado Springs, worked his way through the United States Air Force Academy, completed a military intelligence career, worked to support his family while finishing law school and won four local elections by landslides. Glenn symbolizes the possibilities afforded in a free society that defends equal opportunity. Because Glenn is black and conservative, much of the mainstream media wrote him off before the primary. After his nomination, journalist-pundit types effectively called the race for incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet a full seven months before a vote would be cast. At the “racist” Summit, attendees anticipated improving the Senate’s diversity by helping Glenn upset Bennet — a white man brought up in a prominent political family in Washington, D.C. While waiting for Glenn, the audience applauded a lineup of speakers considerably more diverse than the white-male protesters outside. A small sample includes: Kristina Arriaga, a young Hispanic female who serves as executive director of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. A lawyer who grew up in poverty, after her parents escaped Cuba, Arriaga has won several Supreme Court victories and defended the religious practices of American Indians and a variety of other religious minorities. Star Parker, a young black woman who grew up in rough neighborhoods of East St. Louis, Ill. After working her way through college, Parker established the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, based in Washington, D.C., to improve school options for minority children. Linda Chavez, a Hispanic woman who heads the Center for Equal Opportunity. State Rep. Clarice Navarro, a young Hispanic Republican from Pueblo. Vera Ortegon, a Hispanic woman elected by Colorado Republicans as their National Committeewoman for 2016. George Leing, an Asian-American man elected by Colorado Republicans as their National Committeeman for 2016 Casper Stockham, a black man nominated by Republicans to run for Congress in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. An exhaustive list of young, female, religiously diverse minority scholars and politicos leading the Summit would be too long for inclusion here. We’ll suffice to say white men were scarce. They were a minority among conference speakers, but an overwhelming majority among those charging “racism.” Like other blacks and minorities leading the conference, Glenn said the “old-white-male” stereotype used against Republicans is bizarre. “I am proud to be part of the Republican Party, which elevates people on a basis of merit and not on a basis of race,” Glenn told The Gazette before his speech. “As a meritocracy, we are the young party of diversity. The protesters support a party of mostly old white people telling younger minorities they can’t survive without more government.”)

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/jul/03/retirement-pensions-money
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s a thought about how to make America great again: bring back pensions. If Donald Trump really is intent on turning back the clock to the glory days of an America before globalization knocked the stuffing out of the US manufacturing sector, why stop at trade? Part of what is making all but the wealthiest Americans feel so economically vulnerable today isn’t just that incomes have been eviscerated. It’s the fact that when we retire, those of us without pensions – a growing proportion, especially if we’re not public sector employees or union employees – are perched atop very, very tiny nest eggs. Last year’s report from the nonpartisan US government accountability office (GAO) reminded us of the perils. Half of all households headed by Americans 55 and older had no retirement savings at all. While some long-term savers may have retirement accounts with as much as $251,600, Fidelity reported that the average amount in a 401k – the replacements to pensions that companies began rolling out during the 1980s – was little more than a third of that amount.)

ABC7
— CHICAGO U.S. APPEALS JUDGE RICHARD POSNER SAYS HE’S SORRY FOR ANTI-CONSTITUTION RANT – Chuck Goudie and Barbara Markoff, Christine Tressel  (DIERSEN: In 1997, I argued a lawsuit before Judge Posner.  SEE: David J. Diersen v. Chicago Car Exchange, Inc., 110 F.3d 481 (7th Cir. 1997), cert. denied, 118 S.Ct. 178 (1997) (
http://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-7th-circuit/1385001.html) The lawsuit involved the Federal Odometer Act (FOA), the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) authority to grant exemptions from the FOA, and the sufficiency of material facts that would make a dealer suspicious of a car’s mileage.  On December 21, 1995, Judge Suzanne B. Conlon, United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, granted the Chicago Car Exchange (CCE) summary judgment on the assumption that the exemption that DOT had granted sellers of old cars was valid.  I appealed that decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin).  On September 16, 1996, I presented oral arguments to Chief Judge Posner and Circuit Court Judges Coffey and Kanne.  On March 31, 1997, the Appellate Court ruled that DOT’s exemption for old cars was invalid.  However, the Appellate Court also ruled that I had not presented sufficient material facts to convince a jury that CCE should have been suspicious of the car’s mileage. On May 13, 1997, the Appellate Court denied my motion for rehearing. On August 5, 1997, I filed a petition for writ of certiorari with the Supreme Court of the United States. On October 6, 1997, the Supreme Court denied my petition. The Appellate Court accepted my argument that DOT’s old car exemption was invalid because DOT did not have authority to grant such exemptions. However, subsequently, a) Congress and the Clinton Administration acquiesced to the wishes of the automobile and truck manufacturers and dealers and their lobbyists, amended the FOA, and gave DOT the exemption authority it lacked and b) DOT reissued all the exemptions that it had previously granted including exemptions for sellers of old cars and heavy trucks and for manufactures of cars and trucks.
