While Rutledge, Kulovits, Long, Hjerpe, and Bharadwa got 141, 140, 124, 107, and 65 votes respectively, Hobbs, Erkenswick, Sohmer, and Garrett got only 54, 51, 51, and 43 votes respectively. Of the 490 voters in my precinct, 198 (40%) voted. The DuPage County overall turnout was only 19%. According to the DuPage County Election Division, 80,380 Vote-By-Mail ballots were requested countywide, but only 35,548 have been tabulated. In Wheaton Warrenville School District 200, those who voted for the anti-slate candidates ( https://negatetheslate.com/ ) voted to continue, if not to increase, teacher emphasis on promoting the Democrat, Libertarian, and Green party platforms instead of improving student performance. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Four challengers — Spencer Garrett, Amy Erkenswick, David Sohmer and Kimberly Hobbs — campaigned together under the banner of “parental rights” for majority control of the board. When the dust cleared over Wheaton Tuesday night, at least three of the four slate candidates appeared to come up short in their bids. Incumbents Julie Kulovits and Dave Long emerged from the crowded field with 8,040 and 6,888 votes, respectively, according to unofficial totals as of 11 p.m. Erkenswick led newcomer Erik Hjerpe for third place by a margin of just 61 votes. Trailing were Sohmer with 6,139 votes and Garrett with 5,997. Anjali Bharadwa, running a solo campaign for the second straight election, had 3,172 votes. In the contest for the lone 2-year seat on the board, John Rutledge, a former city councilman, bested Hobbs 8,107 to 6,744 votes. . .Garrett, Sohmer, Erkenswick and Hobbs first showed up to District 200 school board meetings last year to raise objections to “Gender Queer,” an illustrated memoir by nonbinary author Maia Kobabe. The book, which the American Library Association named the most challenged title of 2021, is available in high school libraries. “I can’t believe the pictures that I saw from this disgusting, lewd book,” Garrett told the board in August. Propelled off the sidelines, the like-minded parents formed a local political action committee that reported raising more than $26,000, according to Reform for Illinois’ Sunshine Database. Some of the committee’s donors were evangelical church elders and Christian school board members. Awake Illinois, a Naperville group that has pushed back against mask mandates and called Gov. J.B. Pritzker “a groomer” for signing a controversial law updating sex education standards in K-12 schools, also endorsed Garrett, Erkenswick, Sohmer and Hobbs. The slate candidates believe parents ought to have a greater say over what is taught in public schools and perceive “ideological issues” in the district’s curriculum. The nearly 12,000-student district has an opt-out process for parents to excuse teens from materials they find objectionable. But the four-person slate favored another approach: an opt-in system. School board incumbents and their allies opposed limiting access to books that feature LGBTQ characters and deferred to librarians in curating materials. “The fact that every student would want to see materials that represent their experience, whether they’re gay, straight, transsexual, still deciding, I think that’s very reasonable,” Hjerpe said. Board members defended the district’s process for developing curriculum. The teachers union supported Long, Kulovits, Hjerpe and Rutledge. “Seventy-three percent of our educators have their master’s degree, and they are very well-qualified and capable of doing the job,” said Kulovits, who was appointed to a vacant board seat last summer. Critical race theory, a university-level academic discipline that examines how racism is embedded within legal and social systems, is not taught within District 200 schools. But several slate candidates still broached the topic during the campaign. They also criticized the district’s equity initiatives, particularly implicit bias training for teachers. “I don’t believe in showing partiality in any way in the classroom and the district. We should treat all people the same. (FROM THE ARTICLE: But what Chicagoans voted for on April 4 was someone more extreme and exactly opposite of what the city needed. To reduce Chicago’s nation-high homicide rate, Chicago needed a new mayor willing to take on Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s unwillingness to prosecute dangerous criminals. A mayor willing to challenge Judge Tim Evans’ decarcerationist agenda. A mayor willing to jam shut the system’s revolving door for criminals. Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson won’t do any of that. Instead, look for him to embrace the policies of Foxx and Evans. In his own words, he’s for defunding the police and defends looting as “an outbreak of incredible frustration and anguish” tied to “a failed racist system.” Watch for police morale to fall further, for criminals to be emboldened and for crime to continue to spike in Chicago. To improve Chicago’s dismal educational outcomes – only 1 in 20 black students at CPS can do math at grade level – the city needed a new mayor to champion math and reading proficiency as well as educational excellence, merit and achievement. You won’t get that from Brandon Johnson and his Chicago Teachers Union. Johnson has already said that as a teacher he pushed to eliminate standards, stopped giving homework, and reduced test prep as a way of “rebelling against the structure.” For him, the concept of “equity,” not excellence, will dominate, and kids will lose. Watch for student outcomes to worsen as standards are removed. And as for the city’s economic climate and business friendliness, Chicago needed a new mayor who would make the city affordable again by growing the tax base, not the tax rate. Who would encourage companies to come to the city, not lambast them as a cause of social ills. Johnson will do the opposite. He’s promised to target businesses and the wealthy to pay for his social programming. We’ve already seen leaders in business and finance – like Ken Griffin and Citadel and Boeing – leave. Don’t be surprised to see a continued, steady outflow. The damage could be deep. The silver lining in all this? A few years under Johnson may finally push the center left in Chicago to finally give a reformer the support of 50 percent plus one. The question is, how bad of a hit will Chicago have taken during that time? To its safety. To its social cohesion. To its finances. To its population. To its economic base. Will it be fixable, especially with all its debts? We hope so.)
