SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Pritzker called Schaive about ‘deplorable’ IDOT firing – Bernard Schoenburg  (DIERSEN: Have you been fired, and if so, who has said that your being fired was deplorable? So far, members of the following groups have not said that it was deplorable that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old: anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors, and/or those who promote patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and/or retaliation and/or those who a) reject planks in the Republican Party platform and/or the Illinois Republican Party platform and work against those like me who support those planks, b) reject the Milton Township Republican Central Committee resolution against video gambling and work against those like me who support that resolution, c) focus on destroying those like me who they cannot manipulate/dominate, d) were defendants in lawsuits that I have filed, and/or e) are operatives or dupes for the aforesaid.)
http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20170906/bernard-schoenburg-pritzker-called-schaive-about-deplorable-idot-firing
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Controversy over past Illinois Department of Transportation hiring — and some dismissals made by Gov. BRUCE RAUNER’s administration in response — got prominent play at a campaign stop in Springfield last week by Democratic governor candidate J.B. PRITZKER. BRAD SCHAIVE, business manager of Laborers Local 477, helped introduce Pritzker when the candidate and his running mate, state Rep. JULIANA STRATTON, D-Chicago, stopped Friday at the local’s headquarters in the capital city as part of a bus tour. While an elected official should have strength and leadership, Schaive said, “it’s hard to have any of those other qualities unless you have compassion.” Schaive recalled that his wife, MELISSA, was among eight people the Rauner administration laid off from IDOT in July. The administration said at the time there was a “lack of work” for those let go, and a spokeswoman also said the action was “cleaning up past hiring mistakes and personnel practices.” Melissa Schaive had been with the state since 2003 and made $73,860 annually as an information technology procurement analyst. She also got a liver transplant last year and still needs a kidney transplant. Lawyers for Teamsters local 916 are working to overturn the termination. Schaive told the 250 people gathered Friday that she “lost her job because she chose to take my last name,” and because in his labor job, he “helps those who collectively speak.”)

LOS ANGELES TIMES
— Get ready for the next round in the battle over the Vietnam War – James Reston Jr.  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who since 1966 have hinted/implied/argued/shouted at everyone that the United States lost the Vietnam War because of draft avoiders like me.  I sought and obtained student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971.)
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-reston-vietnam-refought-20170903-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICE: There are two Vietnam wars, and the second is still going 40 years after the first ended. The United States fought the first one from 1959 to 1975 in the jungles, villages and airspace of Indochina. The second is the war over how that war, the first lost war in America’s national history, is remembered. This month, as Ken Burns’ 10-part Vietnam documentary is aired on PBS, the second conflict is sure to heat up again with renewed intensity. The positions will be fiercely argued. What was the war good for? Absolutely nothing, as the 1970 song put it? Or was it a heroic cause? The most important — and poignant — group who will offer answers to these questions is Vietnam veterans themselves.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-pay-gap-transparency-push-20170901-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Trump administration has halted an Obama-era rule requiring large companies to share data with the government about how they pay employees by race and gender – but human resources experts and advocates for equal pay say it’s unlikely to slow the push toward pay transparency employees, shareholders and local governments have demanded in recent years. Increasingly, employees are turning to popular websites like Glassdoor or Payscale to compare their salary data and expecting companies to publicly say they pay men and women equally. Shareholders have pushed technology and financial services companies to release their gender pay gap statistics. More state and local governments have passed pay equity laws, some of which require state contractors to report data or certify they pay men and women the same.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— WHAT THE IL GOP PLATFORM SAYS ABOUT IMMIGRATION  (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform.  In Illinois, if you got elected or appointed to a government office or a political office as a Republican, and you do not defend and advance the Illinois Republican Party platform, you should immediately resign.)
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/09/what-the-il-gop-platform-says-about-immigration.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the Illinois Republican Party’s 2016 Convention, the state’s GOP delegates overwhelmingly supported a platform that contained this strong plank on the issue of immigration. It emphasized a “front door” policy. The issue plank concluded with these words that rank and file Republicans are saying has been totally ignored by the IL GOP leadership – including Governor Rauner – despite Republicans throughout the state supporting this position: “We call on the Illinois government to assist our federal government in the mission of protecting our homeland. We therefore urge reversal of “sanctuary city” policies, which bar our law enforcement officers from aiding Immigration & Customs Enforcement agents. Border control is a national security and public safety issue. We further call on the federal government to secure and protect our borders and vigorously enforce the law of the land. We further call on the federal and Illinois government to abandon all incentives that encourage illegal immigrants to settle in Illinois, as these incentives put a strain on our already struggling economy and is insulting to those who immigrated here legally.” Does the Illinois Republican Party’s platform mean anything at all?  Should IL GOP demand their party officials adhere to the platform rather than ignore it? The platform plank as accepted in 2016:)

MADISON RECORD
— Kyle McCarter: Rauner is ‘the best Republican Democrats have ever had’ – Ann Maher
https://madisonrecord.com/stories/511200480-mccarter-rauner-is-the-best-republican-democrats-have-ever-had
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Calling Gov. Bruce Rauner “the best Republican Democrats have ever had,” fellow GOPer State Sen. Kyle McCarter believes the sanctuary state bill signed into law yesterday will negatively effect the governor’s re-election hopes. “This is not just bad policy,” McCarter said of Rauner’s adoption of the Trust Act. “It’s bad politics.” The “sanctuary state” measure in Senate Bill 31 limits the role local and state police can have in enforcing federal immigration laws. While Rauner touts the Act as one that will improve “connectivity between immigrants and law enforcement, making Illinois safer for all residents,” critics like McCarter say it shows the governor “is not committed to protecting the citizens of Illinois but criminal Illegals.” Leading up to Rauner’s action yesterday, McCarter addressed criticism he faced for not backing his fellow Republican. McCarter said that party loyalty can only go so far. “You can’t overlook what’s right and wrong, and you can’t defend what’s wrong as though it’s right just because your party leader says this is the way it is,” McCarter said in a Facebook post. “We all need to be held accountable.” In a radio interview with radio hosts Dan Proft and Amy Jacobson at AM 560 in Chicago on Tuesday morning, McCarter said he was concerned about “my party” and its brand being tainted, or at least “confused.” He said that within the congressional district he is considering taking a run at – the 15th Congressional District currently represented by Republican John Shimkus – a majority in the 33 counties of the southern Illinois district voted for President Trump. “His immigration policy was one of the reasons they voted for him,” McCarter said. “I think this is going to negatively effect Rauner’s election.” When asked whether Rauner might face a primary challenge, McCarter said he wasn’t sure it was a practical idea as any rival would run against “a very wealthy man.” But he also said that primaries are good because they make candidates better, forcing them to focus on what they stand for. In a final segment of the radio program, Proft turned to an article in a news outlet Proft established – Prairie State Wire – that examines state contracts totaling $16.88 billion amassed for clients of Nancy Kimme, a Republican, whom he described as a “longtime inside player.” Kimme had served as chief of staff to the late Judy Baar Topinka, who passed away shortly after being elected state comptroller in 2014. After Topinka’s passing, Kimme turned to lobbying, and according to Proft, had worked out of the governor’s office under the “previous regime” before a staff shakeup in July. Proft asked McCarter about Rauner’s promise to “shake up” Springfield and turn around Illinois, as in his version of “draining the swamp.” “Unfortunately, Republicans in Illinois dwell in the swamp as well,” McCarter said. “It’s not just a home for Democrats. Cultures of corruption don’t change overnight, no culture does…typically what happens when it does change, you have spectacular principled leaders and it’s those leaders that stand strong and can really move culture in the right direction.” McCarter said he “knew the reality” of how things work in Springfield when he had asked a state agency director about employment for someone he knew. “I had asked a director one time in this administration if there was a place to provide a job to a man who was unjustly treated by the previous administration, and one of best workers we had in the state,” McCarter said. “And he told me he couldn’t do anything about that, but he told me that I should go to the firm of Nancy Kimme…I thought that was just a little odd.” Proft said, “The agency director couldn’t do anything but the shadow government could, if you wanted to enlist them at a price.” “Exactly,” McCarter said. “That is disappointing and shows you the depth of this culture of corruption.”)

WIRE POINTS
— A Particularly Disastrous Day For Illinois And Rauner (Mr. Rauner, That Is) – Mark Glennon
http://www.wirepoints.com/a-particularly-disastrous-day-for-illinois-and-rauner-mr-rauner-that-is-wirepoints-original/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Finally, on Monday, Rauner signed the Trust Act. People I respect who have studied it  closely (I haven’t) split on it’s legal importance. Some say it makes Illinois a “sanctuary” state while some say it just codifies court rulings and has symbolic importance only. But even that symbolic importance is huge. Many opponents of sanctuary cities, who comprise much of Rauner’s base, are absolutely livid and they don’t really give a damn whether it’s just symbolic. Rauner’s support is now getting national attention and derision. The bottom line is that both Illinois and Rauner lost big time on Monday, and it wasn’t just because of politics, spin, or Rauner’s bad communication skills. On the subject of communication, yes, Rauner’s staff has long shared blame and the recent turmoil in his staff left a void. But the primary failure is Rauner’s own. He’s seems forever unprepared. Though usually directionally correct, he gets facts wrong, exaggerates and sometimes just doesn’t know. He contradicts himself from one day to another. Platitudes suffice for arguments. Since he’s unquestionably smart and a true workaholic, he has no excuse for appearing to be so lazy about substance. Ironically, while his conservative base wobbles, the narrative prevails that right wing nutjobs now dominate his staff. Among other reasons why that’s false is that First Lady Diana Rauner, by all credible accounts, is the most powerful person on the team. I don’t know her but those who do say she’ smart, opinionated and driven, though less charitable synonyms aren’t uncommon. Most importantly, she’s a liberal Democrat and she pushes for liberal Democratic policies. To her and to her fellow party members in the General Assembly, I say this sincerely: Touché. You had an extraordinarily successful Monday, on both policy and politics.)

ILLINOIS FAMILY INSTITUTE
— West Chicago Library Votes to Retain Age Inappropriate Picture Book – Thomas Madison  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats encourage children to engage in LGBTQ activity.)
https://illinoisfamily.org/education/west-chicago-library-votes-retain-age-inappropriate-picture-book/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On August 28th, the West Chicago Public Library Board voted 6-1 to retain the homosexuality-celebrating picture book This Day in June. IFI thanks you for your support in emailing the library director Benjamin Weseloh to share your concerns about this book. There were roughly 80-100 people in attendance, and 90 percent of them were pro-LGBT supporters of the book. Unfortunately, this is usually the case when book controversies arise. Those who seek to normalize disordered sexuality are far more passionate, tenacious, and bold than are those who oppose the normalization of sexual deviance. The Left seems to care far more about promoting lies to young children than conservatives do in protecting them from lies. Those community members who had the wisdom and courage to oppose this troubling picture book needed much more verbal support at the meeting. IFI is disappointed in the absence of local community support for those brave men and women. We know significant opposition to this book exists because of the hundreds of messages that were sent to the director, but emails alone are insufficient if real change is to occur. Sometimes people are unable to make meetings, but often emailing concerns represents indefensible cowardice or surrender. The supporters of the book came out strongly against IFI, explicitly attacking us and making numerous spurious statements. The most obviously false statement was that IFI is a hate group. IFI’s positions on homosexuality no more constitute hatred of persons who believe differently than does disapproval of polyamory or polygamy constitute hatred of polyamorists or polygamists. Leftists are either unable to understand this distinction or unwilling to admit it because they know that fallacious ad hominem attacks work. The most startling remarks made in support of the book were that the content was not sexual. This is a complete denial of reality and a reminder that people will pervert the truth to suit their own lifestyles. The book is specifically intended toward “helping” children recognize and accept the diversity of sexual preferences. It features men kissing men and women kissing women. Since when is romantic kissing or even simply kissing romantic partners not a sexual act? Some of the board members noted the importance of the library representing the diverse views found in its community. The speciousness of this claim is revealed in the absence of books on a host of topics. This absence is due—at least in part—to librarians imposing their moral views through the purchasing process. When they impose their views, it’s called responsible text selection. When conservatives want purchases to reflect their views, leftists call it censorship and book-banning. We were disappointed not only in learning how the board members voted but also in learning that regardless of their votes, the book would have stayed on the shelf. According to the parliamentarian, the policy of the board is to let the library staff decide for themselves the quality of material, so last night’s vote was a non-binding vote. The board’s policy is reflective of the American Library Association (ALA), the far-leftist organization that wanted children’s computers to have access to pornography) and which actively promotes homosexuality and the “trans” ideology. Should unelected library staff whose training comes through the highly politicized and leftist field of library science be granted such near-absolute autonomy?Ultimately, if community members want to see this inappropriate book moved to a restricted area—as it is in other local libraries like Downers Grove—or removed altogether, they will either have to convince the staff to move or remove the book, or West Chicagoans must elect better board members to change board policy. West Chicago Public Library employee Joan Happel posted this celebratory announcement on Facebook, “The library director’s decision is to keep the book where it is! That decision was never in question.” Happel evidently finds nothing problematic about a picture book for young children whose author said this: “When I wrote this story, I wanted Pride to be featured as realistically as possible. I wanted to see drag queens, guys in leather, rainbows, political signs, the Dykes on Bikes—everything you would see at Pride. I didn’t want any of it to be watered-down or sugarcoated. Lots of people have asked me, “Do you think that’s appropriate for children?” And my answer always is YES.” Unfortunately, numerous libraries throughout the country and in Illinois are using public monies to promote the normalization of homosexuality and the “trans” ideology. The battle against dissenting views—including Judeo-Christian views—continues. Those relatively few brave souls who step up to oppose deception—especially deception that harms children—need many others to come alongside them. IFI wonders how many area pastors showed up to make statements about this book. Here is a breakdown of how the West Chicago Library Board voted and their respective term expiration years.)

https://www.stripes.com/news/pentagon-expands-policy-to-upgrade-vets-bad-paper-discharges-1.485038#.WaaQ7BHxZZI
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Defense Department on Monday issued a sweeping policy change to afford more leeway to veterans seeking upgrades to their other-than-honorable discharges. A memorandum dated Aug. 25 instructs the Army Review Boards Agency — the office charged with changing military records — to give “liberal consideration” to veterans looking to upgrade their less-than-honorable discharges, or “bad paper,” because of mental health conditions or traumatic brain injury, sexual assault or sexual harassment and outlines what should be considered when deciding an upgrade. In 2014, former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel had ordered the Army Review Boards Agency to give consideration to veterans looking to upgrade their less-than-honorable discharges because of post-traumatic stress disorder. The new memo expands on Hagel’s order after years of veterans asking for government recognition that troops are, in some instances, affected by service-related mental health conditions that change their behaviors and lead to disciplinary problems. “This new guidance is something that veteran advocates should be really excited about – it’s what we’ve been asking for from the Pentagon for years,” said Kristofer Goldsmith, an Iraq War veteran who has fought for 10 years to change upgrade procedures. “This memo is filled with signals that there may yet be hope for the thousands of veterans who have been unfairly suffering the effects of bad paper.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-immigration-20170828-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Rauner’s campaign put an additional $500,000 into the Illinois GOP last week, further cementing it as an extension of the governor’s re-election. With the latest contribution, the governor personally or through his campaign fund has donated about $31.1 million to the state Republican Party since he became its nominee for governor in March 2014. Rauner donations account for 68.5 percent of the nearly $45.4 million that the state GOP has raised during that time period. The party also has gotten sizable donations from the House Republican campaign committee and some GOP candidates that occurred after they received big checks from the Rauner campaign. Rauner hasn’t been shy that he wants to erode the Democratic majorities in the General Assembly to help accomplish his agenda. The state GOP was a central repository for Rauner money for Republican legislative elections last year. During a stop in Marion last week, Rauner complained about the legislature’s Democratic dominance under House Speaker Michael Madigan and lamented court rulings that struck down attempts to put term limits and changes in legislative redistricting on the ballot as proposed constitutional amendments. “We need to get people elected in the legislature who support term limits and fair maps, and we’ll get this done. This is a goal we will never give up on. But they defeated us so far. But we’ll get it done,” he said.)

— The Biggest Misconception About Today’s College Students – Gail O. Mellow  (DIERSEN: Do you have a degree from an Ivy League school?  While I have four college degrees, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress that none of them are from Ivy League schools.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/28/opinion/community-college-misconception.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You might think the typical college student lives in a state of bliss, spending each day moving among classes, parties and extracurricular activities. But the reality is that an increasingly small population of undergraduates enjoys that kind of life. Of the country’s nearly 18 million undergraduates, more than 40 percent go to community college, and of those, only 62 percent can afford to go to college full-time. By contrast, a mere 0.4 percent of students in the United States attend one of the Ivies. The typical student is not the one burnishing a fancy résumé with numerous unpaid internships. It’s just the opposite: Over half of all undergraduates live at home to make their degrees more affordable, and a shocking 40 percent of students work at least 30 hours a week. About 25 percent work full-time and go to school full-time. The typical college student is also not fresh out of high school. A quarter of undergraduates are older than 25, and about the same number are single parents. These students work extremely hard to make ends meet and simultaneously get the education they need to be more stable: A two-year degree can earn students nearly 20 percent more annually than just a high school diploma.)

— BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS: Rauner to Sign Immigration Bill Amid Conservative Backlash – Shelby Bremer (DIERSEN: Those who want Rauner to sign the bill also want Rauner to officially dump those individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/politics/rauner-to-sign-illinois-trust-act-441922333.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some say the bill would turn Illinois into a “sanctuary state,” the term used for jurisdictions that do not comply with federal requests to detain undocumented immigrants who have been arrested on charges unrelated to their immigration status and turn them over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for possible deportation. President Donald Trump has made a concerted effort to crack down on these jurisdictions, signing an executive order in January to halt federal grants to so-called sanctuary cities. . .Often reluctant to discuss national political issues, particularly as they relate to Trump, Rauner will sign the bill – which received one Republican vote in the House and five in the Senate – on the final day of his 60-day window to act on the legislation ends, in a move that has already angered some of the state’s more conservative voters and pundits. Far-right website Breitbart News slammed the first-term governor for his support of the bill, sharing criticisms of the measure from conservative commentators like Rosanna Pulido, former Republican candidate for Congress and founder of the anti-immigration group Illinois Minutemen. “Personally I am already checking out a different state I can move to. It is truly a sad day in Illinois,” Pulido said, calling SB 31 “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” Former congressman and conservative radio host Joe Walsh tweeted Tuesday that Rauner is “done” if he signs the bill, adding that it would be a “bad terrible day for Illinois” and he would not support his reelection.)

https://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2017/08/27/chicagoans-march-solidarity-against-white-supremacists
(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: CHICAGO – A coalition of Chicagoans representing more than 50 community and labor organizations will assemble at 2pm, Sunday, August 27 to say NO to white supremacists, and the political culture & public officials propagating hate, violence and inequality. Late Friday, knowing they would face massive opposition, neo-fascists in the Bay Area cancelled their planned events. Counter-protesters in the Bay Area decided to continue the plan to take their opposition to the bigots to the streets, and we will be doing the same here in Chicago. The Chicago event, entitled Solidarity Against White Supremacy, will begin at Federal Plaza, corner of Adams and Dearborn Streets, and march to near Trump Tower, corner of Wabash and Wacker Avenues. Solidarity Against White Supremacy is part of the National Weekend of Solidarity, a national effort to show support for community members planning to protest hate groups and other racists in San Francisco and Berkeley on the weekend of August 26-27. The rally comes in the wake of the Charlottesville violence and the inability of officials like President Trump and Governor Bruce Rauner to properly condemn it. “While many are prompted to protest the egregious responses of Trump, Rauner and others to the fascist hate and violence in Charlottesville, we also recognize that this hate has deep institutional roots in our country, and many of the policies pursued by politicians of both parties reinforce, rather than diminish it,” said Jaquie Algree vice president for external relations of SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana. “Depriving schools serving primarily Black and Brown youth of the music, art, sports and other programs enjoyed by wealthier, whiter students, closing public mental health clinics, slashing social services relied on by women and people of color, attacking unions, deporting millions of immigrants—all these are policies that reinforce the racism and other hate highlighted in Charlottesville.” Solidarity Against White Supremacy organizers note that the murder of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, VA was but the most publicized in a string of neo-fascist terrorist attacks in the United States. In 2016, attacks on Muslims increased 67% over the preceding year. In May of this year, Black Bowie State student Richard W. Collins III was murdered by a neo-Nazi on the University of Maryland campus. In June, Richy John Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche were murdered in Portland when they intervened to stop racist harassment of two young Black women. “When Trump says he wants to ‘make America great again,’ we know that he wants to turn the clock back to a time when few had the courage to oppose the racism, sexism, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBTQ hate espoused by his core, ‘Alt-Right,’ neo-fascist supporters,” said Andy Thayer of the Gay Liberation Network. “It is no accident that Chicago is one of the cities where these organized creeps are at their weakest – On March 11, 2016, Chicagoans forced then-candidate Trump to cancel his rally at UIC. On August 27, Chicagoans will gather once again to tell white supremacists and anyone else with the intent to harm, that they are not welcome in Chicago.”)

We have spent lots of money and I have spent lots of time making landscaping and lot drainage improvements.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner has approved the creation of the Illinois Muslim American Advisory Council. The Republican signed the plan into law on Friday without offering comment. The council’s purpose is to advise the governor and legislators on policy issues affecting Muslim Americans and immigrants. It’ll be made up of 21 members, appointed by the governor and legislative leaders. The group is required to meet monthly and issue policy recommendations. Proponents say establishing the council sends a welcoming message to Muslims. Opponents question resources used on advisory councils. Former Gov. Pat Quinn had established a similar group by executive order in 2011, but the group disbanded when Rauner took office in 2015. Illinois has over 500,000 Muslims and more than 300 mosques.)

My $50,856/year pension is only 41% of the $122,991/year that I earned in 1997 in today’s dollars. Because my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old, we have at least $72,135 less each year or $6,011 less each month or $1,387 less each week or $198 less each day to spend on vacations  I went on vacations in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1977.  My wife and I went on many vacations, typically four each year, 1978-1992 in connection with her business trips to luxury resorts all across America. CHICAGO TRIBUNE

They shout at Rauner that his worst enemies are those like me who promote the traditional family, right to life, immigration, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving), and other planks.  They shout at Rauner that his worst enemies are those like me who oppose patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and vices including booze, gambling, and pot. They shout at Rauner that he should not read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-staff-shakeup-met-0825-20170824-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Later in the day, at an event in Naperville, Rauner acknowledged the difficulty of working in government. “The work that we do for the people of Illinois is incredibly difficult and very stressful. It’s a burnout, high stress, it’s hard on people’s families,” the wealthy former equity investor told reporters. As for what he feels is his repeated difficulty in getting his message out, Rauner called the communications effort “incredibly hard because we have attacks, we have political attacks coming 20 times a day, we have social media attacks coming 100 times a day, we have false rumors planted that have to be dealt with or responded to” in addition to “legitimate questions” from the media. “It is really hard, really hard, and we need to do all that while also getting out the message about the positive changes that we are trying to drive and the wonderful work that we’re doing on a bipartisan basis, wonderful legislation that we’ve been able to achieve,” he said. But in the earlier conference call to staff, Rauner maintained there was a larger, even more encompassing messaging mission — the need to counter his “enemies.” “The reality is in addition to the enemies on the other side of the aisle (Democrats), we have enemies in the media and enemies who should be on our side, some of them former members of the administration,” the source recounted Rauner as saying.)

And that organization (the IPI) that did that cartoon, they should talk to you about what their views are on it, and I’m not gonna,” he said. “I have fought for racial justice, equality of opportunity, my whole life.” Despite being a previous donor to the IPI and close ties to John Tillman, the intitute’s chief executive, Rauner denied the assertion that it’s his “go-to think tank.” “A tiny fraction of our administration is from that organization,” he said. “And they in no regard, in no regard, does that organization speak for me or our administration, and I do not lean on them for any particular issue or policy.”)

THE BLAZE
— The SPLC calls Christians a “hate group.” Now, Christians are fighting back. – Aaron Colen
http://www.theblaze.com/news/2017/08/24/the-splc-calls-christians-a-hate-group-now-christians-are-fighting-back/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Southern Poverty Law Center has been trying to marginalize Christian beliefs for a while. Now, Christians are pushing back.
D. James Kennedy Ministries in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has sued the SPLC for labeling it as an “active hate group” because it holds to traditional Christian views on homosexuality and marriage. Why would a Christian ministry be a hate group? As sexual orientation and gender identity have become “civil rights” issues on the front lines of the culture wars in the United States, people and organizations, particularly churches, that do not support LGBTQ lifestyles are increasingly under fire from mainstream media and organizations like the SPLC, who claim these religiously-based beliefs are bigoted and discriminatory. Christianity, at its core, is about love. By designating a Christian organization as a hate group, the SPLC is pursuing a culture in which disagreement with the mainstream equals hate. “It’s completely disingenuous to tag D. James Kennedy Ministries as a hate group alongside the KKK and neo-Nazis,” Kennedy Ministries spokesman John Rabe said to Fox News. “We desire all people, with no exceptions, to receive the love of Christ and his forgiveness and healing. We unequivocally condemn violence, and we hate no one. “It’s nothing more than an attempt to bulldoze over those who disagree with them, and it has a chilling effect on the free exercise of religion in a nation built on that,” Rabe continued. “We decided not to let their falsehoods stand.” I’ve never heard of D. James Kennedy. Why should I care? The SPLC’s attacks on Christian organizations are significant to all Christians. The SPLC has a storied history of taking up noble causes and using the law to bring justice and fight legitimate hate. The SPLC did significant damage to the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s, for example. Because of that history, the SPLC is an influential voice in shaping public perception of organizations. Categorization as a hate group by the SPLC leads to increased animosity and opposition from the culture at-large. For churches, that opposition can hinder them from serving communities both at home and worldwide. Religious freedom is a form of free speech, and irresponsible attacks from the SPLC and others on religious expression aren’t likely to stop with churches. Aggressively suppressing the views of certain groups, especially when you have to twist their message in order to do so, is a slippery slope. “These false and illegal characterizations have a chilling effect on the free exercise of religion and on religious free speech for all people of faith,” a statement from Kennedy Ministries read. “After having given the SPLC an opportunity to retract, we have undertaken this legal action, seeking a trial by a jury of our peers, to preserve our own rights under the law and to defend the religious free speech rights of all Americans.”)

— Why Is the Southern Poverty Law Center Targeting Liberals? – AYAAN HIRSI ALI
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/24/opinion/southern-poverty-law-center-liberals-islam.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since the violence in Charlottesville 10 days ago, when white supremacists left one young woman dead and 19 others injured, the Southern Poverty Law Center has hit the jackpot. The Alabama-based nonprofit is set to receive millions of dollars in donations from some of the nation’s deepest of pockets. Apple pledged $1 million. JP Morgan Chase & Co.: half a million. George and Amal Clooney even got in on the action, promising to donate another $1 million. Like every other decent American, I was outraged that the president of the United States equivocated in condemning neo-Nazi activity in this country. Nazism — not to mention white supremacy and racial bigotry — has no place in a civilized society. But is donating money to the S.P.L.C. the best way to combat this poison? I think not. If Tim Cook and Jamie Dimon had done their due diligence, they would know that the S.P.L.C. is an organization that has lost its way, smearing people who are fighting for liberty and turning a blind eye to an ideology and political movement that has much in common with Nazism. I am a black woman, a feminist and a former Muslim who has consistently opposed political violence. The price for expressing my beliefs has been high: I must travel with armed security at all times. My friend and collaborator Theo van Gogh was murdered in broad daylight. Yet the S.P.L.C. has the audacity to label me an “extremist,” including my name in a “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists” that it published on its website last October.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Still cleaning up after President Donald Trump’s comments about a deadly protest in Virginia, the Republican National Committee is headed toward adoption of a resolution condemning white supremacists. And while the rebuke of groups Trump waffled on is expected to pass overwhelmingly Friday, some attending the summer meeting of the party’s most faithful are rolling their eyes at the move. “It’s amazing that we have been lured into this argument that we’re not racists. It’s absurd,” said Colorado Republican Chairman Jeff Hays. “Why would we feel compelled to do that?” The grumbling reflects a difference between some veteran Republicans concerned about the party’s image in light of Trump’s latest rhetorical thicket and newer, more ardently pro-Trump state Republican leaders. “There’s no debate. We’re affirming we’re the party of Lincoln,” Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said, dismissing complaints about the resolution. “We are showing the moral high ground by disavowing hate and violence.”)

Strassel  (DIERSEN: I am one of Chase’s customers who has complained about this.  If you give money to the SPLC, you shout that you are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/j-p-morgans-hate-list-1503619180
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Corporate America will do almost anything to stay on the safe side of public opinion—at least as it’s defined by the media. CEOs will apologize, grovel, resign, settle. They will even, as of this month, legitimize and fund an outfit that exists to smear conservatives. The press is still obsessing over President Trump’s incompetent handling of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., and that has suited some profiteers just fine. The notorious Southern Poverty Law Center is quietly cashing in on the tragedy, raking in millions on its spun-up reputation as a group that “fights hate.” Apple CEO Tim Cook informed employees that his company is giving $1 million to SPLC and matching employee donations. J.P. Morgan Chase is pitching in $500,000, specifically to further the SPLC’s “work in tracking, exposing and fighting hate groups and other extremist organizations,” in the words of Peter Scher, the bank’s head of corporate responsibility. What Mr. Scher is referring to is the SPLC’s “Hate Map,” its online list of 917 American “hate groups.” The SPLC alone decides who goes on the list, but its criteria are purposely vague. Since the SPLC is a far-left activist group, the map comes down to this: If the SPLC doesn’t agree with your views, it tags you as a hater. Let’s not mince words: By funding this list, J.P. Morgan and Apple are saying they support labeling Christian organizations that oppose gay marriage as “hate groups.” That may come as a sour revelation to any bank customers who have donated to the Family Research Council (a mainstream Christian outfit on the SPLC’s list) or whose rights are protected by the Alliance Defending Freedom (which litigates for religious freedom and is also on the list). Similarly put out may be iPhone owners who support the antiterror policies espoused by Frank Gaffney’s Washington think tank, the Center for Security Policy (on the SPLC’s list). Or any who back the proposals of the Center for Immigration Studies (on the list). These corporations are presumably in favor of the SPLC’s practice of calling its political opponents “extremists,” which paints targets on their backs. The group’s “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists” lists Mr. Gaffney (who worked for the Reagan administration); Maajid Nawaz (a British activist whose crimes include tweeting a cartoon of Jesus and Muhammad ); and Ayaan Hirsi Ali (a Somali refugee who speaks out against Islamic extremism). The SPLC has tarred the respected social scientist Charles Murray, author of the well-regarded book “Losing Ground,” as a “white nationalist.” Mr. Murray has been physically assaulted on campus as a result. He happens to be married to an Asian woman and has Asian daughters, so the slur is ludicrous. But what’s a little smearing and career destruction if J.P. Morgan Chase gets some good headlines? It isn’t only the lists. An honest outfit tracking violent groups would keep to straightforward descriptions and facts. Instead, the SPLC’s descriptions of people are brutally partisan, full of half-truths and vitriol designed to inspire fury. We’ve seen what this kind of fury can do in Europe, with the murder of Theo Van Gogh, the controversial filmmaker, by a Dutch-Moroccan Islamic fanatic. Ms. Hirsi Ali, who had worked with Van Gogh, still travels with security—and J.P. Morgan thinks it appropriate to further target her? In 2012 a gay-marriage supporter named Floyd Corkins smashed into the Family Research Council’s headquarters and shot a security guard. He told police he was inspired by the SPLC’s “hate group” designation. Had the companies done a bit of homework, they’d have discovered the SPLC isn’t even considered a sound charity. Karl Zinsmeister excoriated the outfit in a recent article for Philanthropy Roundtable: “Its two largest expenses are propaganda operations: creating its annual list of ‘haters’ and ‘extremists,’ and running a big effort that pushes ‘tolerance education’ through more than 400,000 public-school teachers. And the single biggest effort undertaken by the SPLC? Fundraising. On the organization’s 2015 IRS 990 form it declared $10 million of direct fundraising expenses, far more than it has ever spent on legal services.” Apple did not return a call to its media center. J.P. Morgan Chase, in an emailed statement, said only that it has a “long history of supporting a range of organizations that are committed to addressing inequality.” The corporate donations are nonetheless appalling, as they legitimize a group that already exercises inappropriate influence. The SPLC’s list is cited regularly by the media and congressional Democrats, ignorant or uncaring of its falsehoods. The charity tracker GuideStar for a time attached warning labels to philanthropies flagged by the SPLC. This undermines the fight against truly hateful groups. Comparing pro bono lawyers at the Alliance Defending Freedom to hood-wearing KKK members only make the Klan seem more innocuous. Blackballing mainstream groups only silences the moderate voices the country needs to fight hate and bigotry. Corporations have a role to play in calming today’s divisions. This is the opposite.)

— This tax reform idea could cost you–a lot – DENNIS RODKIN
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/realestate/20170810/CRED0701/170819998
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With federal tax reform on Congress’s agenda after its August recess, two ideas that have been circulating have the potential to hit Chicago-area homeowners, one of them much harder than the other. Two federal tax deductions—one for mortgage interest and the other for state and local taxes—are in the crosshairs of reformers. The mortgage interest deduction would likely be revised, not eliminated, because it’s a hallowed perk of homeownership, most reports say. But the loss of the state and local tax deduction would cut deeper in the Chicago region anyway, analysts in the real estate, mortgage and tax realms told Crain’s this week. Eliminating the state and local tax deduction could transfer almost $2.9 billion a year out of household wealth and into federal coffers, according to Brian Bernardoni, senior director of government affairs and public policy for the Chicago Association of Realtors. That is, unless that larger tax reform package includes adjustments to the general tax rate that offset this amount.)

Bruce Rauner made it official, signing Senate Bill 55 which means beginning in 2018 Illinois will recognize August 4 as “Barack Obama Day.” Rauner says it won’t be a formal state holiday with paid time off but it will be a day of acknowledgment and celebration. Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth says Rauner is the perfect example of a “Rhino Republican.” “A Republican governor heaping praise on the most immoral promoting president in American history, Barack Obama,” LaBarbera complains, “who ushered in homosexual so-called marriage, who mocked the authority of the Bible, who promoted abortion, who loves Planned Parenthood. With Republicans like that, who needs Democrats?” The argument from liberals that there is a similar holiday honoring President Ronald Reagan is a ridiculous comparison, he also insists. “To compare the two is an insult to Ronald Reagan,” LaBarbera insists. “Ronald Reagan was one of the greatest presidents we ever had.” Reagan led the West in a fight to crush Communism, LaBarbera recalls, while Obama “sucked up” to Cuba’s dictators. It’s insulting, he says, to put Obama in the same category.)

— When Government Defames  No judicial remedy exists if a federal official slanders you – AZIZ HUQ  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about Democrat plant, Libertarian plant, Green plant, and RINO activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who have slandered me. They feel free to do that because I have always had a policy of forgiving those who trespass me.  But I am reconsidering that policy.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/10/opinion/government-defamation-white-house-slander.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Imagine that a senior government official takes to Twitter, makes a call to a national news outlet or goes on national television to disparage you. Imagine that he tells lies about you to a national audience, lies harmful to your professional or personal future. What could you do to remedy the situation? You might seek a retraction. Perhaps you would go to colleagues and friends to privately plead your side of the case. Or if you were lucky enough to have a national platform of your own, maybe you would try to correct the defamatory statement in public. But one thing you couldn’t do is sue. No judicial remedy exists when a federal official defames someone. This gap in the law isn’t a result of a conscious decision by Congress or federal judges to protect the government’s ability to defame you. It was created inadvertently. In an age when the political lie is being weaponized to increasing effect, it’s an oversight Congress should redress.)
