(FROM THE ARTICLE: This postponement of the age of marriage by young people compared to prior decades — partly spurred by improved educational and economic status in their 20s for women such as Jeffery — is just one of many long-term trends highlighted by national statistics in a recent U.S. Census Bureau report. The April report, “The Changing Economics and Demographics of Young Adulthood: 1975-2016,” puts numbers to some often-discussed aspects of today’s millennial generation — ones that may inspire either frustration, sympathy or nodding approval from their baby boomer parents, who themselves often broke with their parents’ traditions. Examining census and other survey data about the 18-to-34 age group, the report notes: — The percentage of women ages 20-24 who are married fell from 57 percent in 1976 to 17 percent in 2014, while those with a child fell from 31 percent to 25 percent. It is thus more common for a 25-year-old woman to be a mother than a wife. — About one of three 18-to-34-year-olds relies on parents’ financial help, and a similar proportion live in their parents’ homes. The percentage living independently fell from 51 percent in 2005 to 41 percent in 2015. — The economic situation of young men has plummeted, with 41 percent of those ages 25-34 earning less than $30,000 annually, compared to just 25 percent who were below that inflation-adjusted threshold in 1975. The status of women has spiked, meanwhile, as only 14 percent in that age group are homemakers now compared to 43 percent in 1975. Despite economic gains compared to young men, however, their earnings still trail those of males. — Sharing a home with an unmarried partner has been the fastest-growing living arrangement over the past four decades, used by 12 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds in 2016 compared to less than 1 percent in 1975. The age group’s most common living arrangement, however, is living with parents, which has overtaken living with a spouse. The report pointed out how today’s millennials generally fail to reach benchmarks of adult independence by an age that most of society considers ideal. A 2012 survey of the U.S. population, for instance, found 21 was deemed the ideal age of financial independence from parents, but only 29 percent of 21-year-olds currently achieve that. And 22 was the consensus as the ideal age of obtaining full-time employment, but only 37 percent have such jobs by that age. Similarly, wide gaps show up for getting married and becoming a parent. Putting together four yardsticks by which someone might fully embrace adulthood — a job, marriage, parenthood and living apart from parents — nearly half of 25-to-34-year-olds could claim all of those in 1975, but fewer than one-fourth could in 2016, according to the report.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Did you know that patronage hiring is illegal in Illinois? Well, it is.  A 1972 court order prohibits political hiring for non-political state positions. It’s been ignored too often for many of the last 45 years, but it’s still in effect, and we now have a governor who wants to abide by it and thinks it should be enforced. The big problem for Bruce Rauner is that state employee rolls are already riddled with patronage hires and any attempt to identify them and weed them out is going to be resisted by the public employee unions to which they belong. In 2014, Federal Magistrate Judge Sidney Schenkier, who is overseeing ongoing proceedings in the case (Shakman) that led to the 1972 court order, appointed Noelle Brennan as a special master to investigate the hiring practices of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). On April 24 of this year, Special Master Brennan reported that state officials (including Rep. Jay Hoffman of Belleville and Sen. James Clayborne of East St. Louis) had abused a special hiring exemption to place at least dozens of friends, family, and supporters into so-called “staff assistant” positions at IDOT and other state agencies, in violation of the 1972 court order. “The governor’s office [in the previous administration] received, reviewed, forwarded, and tracked resumes,” Brennan affirmed; “most of those candidates had a political connection; and many of the politically connected candidates hired … lacked any policy or other relevant experience.” The following day, Gov. Rauner  filed a “motion for clarification” in Chicago federal court, asking for guidance as to whether state employees improperly hired through political connections can use collective bargaining agreements to remain in their positions, transfer to others, or be promoted. In other words, do the state’s collective bargaining agreements and related labor relations documents trump the court decree prohibiting patronage hiring? The abuses perpetrated by Pat Quinn, Mike Madigan, and other insubordinate public servants need to stopped.)

A recent Gallup poll found that fewer Democrats are proud to be Americans. The survey, conducted in March 2017, revealed 67 percent of Democrats are “extremely proud” or “very proud” to be Americans; that compares to 78 percent in 2016. There was little change among Republicans and Independents. In fact, the survey shows Republicans’ pride at 92 percent. Gallup reports the current 25-point gap in patriotic feelings between Republicans and Democrats is the highest in Gallup’s records. In January 2007, the party gap was 21 points. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A political appointee hired by the Trump administration for a significant State Department role was accused of multiple sexual assaults as a student several years ago at The Citadel military college. Steven Munoz was hired by the Trump administration as assistant chief of visits, running an office of up to 10 staffers charged with the sensitive work of organizing visits of foreign heads of state to the U.S. That includes arranging meetings with the president. At The Citadel, five male freshmen alleged that Munoz used his positions as an upperclassman, class president and head of the campus Republican Society to grope them. In one incident, a student reported waking up with Munoz on top of him, kissing him and grabbing his genitals. In another, on a trip to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., a student said that Munoz jumped on him in bed and he “felt jerking and bouncing on my back.” An investigation by The Citadel later found that “certain assaults likely occurred.” A local prosecutor reviewed the case and declined to seek an indictment. Munoz’s hiring raises questions about the Trump administration’s vetting of political appointees, which has been both slow and spotty, with multiple incidents of staff being fired only weeks into their jobs, including for disloyalty to Trump. The White House didn’t respond to a request for comment. Munoz, a Miami native, worked as a political consultant in South Carolina after graduating from The Citadel in 2011. He was publicly reported to be under investigation the following year around the time he was working for Rick Santorum’s presidential campaign.
