(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican legislative candidates are coming forward “at a much higher rate” than they did for the 2018 election, a signal that the Illinois GOP is working to make good on a promise to fill every slot on the 2022 ballot. “I attribute [the uptick] to people understanding the opportunity that we have this cycle and the issues that we’ll run against Democrats,” Jayme Odom, the executive director of the Illinois House Republicans, told Playbook. She says those issues include Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s “overreach” by not working with the legislature to enact Covid-19 mitigation rules, passage of police-reform legislation, and signing a law that decriminalizes possession of certain amounts of fentanyl and cocaine. On the state Senate side, “More Republicans in the Cook County region are interested in running for state office than I’ve seen before,” says Senate GOP Political Director Nick McNeely. There’s no litmus test for running, but the House Republican organization is asking whether candidates believe the 2020 election was stolen. “We’re looking for people who are interested in running and who fit the constituency of their district,” said Odom. Recruiting on all fronts: Along with state House and Senate recruitment efforts, the conservative think tank Illinois Policy Institute (IPI) is scouting for candidates. Even Jeanne Ives, a former GOP state representative who in 2018 lost a congressional race, is working to get candidates to run, according to two Republican Party sources. “When you don’t have contested races, a lot of people don’t vote,” IPI’s Matt Paprocki told Playbook. He says IPI has sent out 65,000 mailers statewide to “free-market individuals, Democrats, Independents and Republicans” as part of an outreach effort to potential candidates. “We stop the engagement once they say they want to run.” (The organization, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, can’t be engaged in electioneering.) Republicans aren’t coughing up names of candidates quite yet. “Everyone’s keeping their powder dry until they see the maps,” said McNeely, referring to the legislative map that Democrats will tweak Aug. 31 when they return to Springfield. (Republican leaders filed a federal lawsuit in June challenging boundaries that were drawn and approved by the Democratic-led General Assembly during the spring, saying the boundaries were based on unofficial census numbers. That suit is pending.) Of course, candidate recruitment means nothing without cash. But then, my Firestone boss offered me a part-time job pumping gasoline which I accepted. Before I started working for IRS and working part-time for Firestone, I went on a spring break vacation in the Bahamas. My 1969 Dodge Charger SE was stolen in Chicago in August. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Minnesota Republican Party Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan has presided over a toxic workplace culture and unchecked sexual harassment in the state party, according to a growing number of former staffers and activists who have leveled allegations against her. Four former executive directors of the party released a lengthy statement on Wednesday saying Carnahan “ruled by grudges, retaliation, and intimidation” in the party, often withholding prized party data to help candidates she preferred to get a “leg up.” The statement said she retaliated against those who spoke out against her, often trying to prevent former staff from getting other jobs. “Carnahan created an extremely toxic work environment, often yelling, demeaning and questioning loyalty,” the former staffers said in a joint statement. “We would be reprimanded if we did not glowingly ‘pump up’ and stroke the ego of Carnahan in our rare public appearances.” The four former executive directors — Becky Alery, Andy Aplikowski, Christine Snell and Kevin Poindexter — said they were able to speak out after the party’s Executive Board voted Sunday to void nondisclosure agreements that they said Carnahan used to silence staff. They added their voices to a widening chorus of people calling for Carnahan to resign from party leadership, including well over a dozen state legislators, three Republican governor candidates and five members of the party’s own executive board. Carnahan has said the allegations are part of an effort by her detractors to “relitigate” the 2021 race for party chair, when she won a third term. The 15-member executive board is meeting Thursday night and will take a vote of confidence in Carnahan’s leadership. Ten votes are required to remove her as chair. Many have cited Carnahan’s close relationship with Anton “Tony” Lazzaro, a prolific GOP donor and activist who was arrested last week on federal charges of sex trafficking. Lazzaro became deeply involved in state politics through his friendship with Carnahan. Since his arrest, other allegations have flooded social media about Carnahan’s leadership of the party. This isn’t the first time that Biden, who professes to care so much about equity, has pushed damaging policies that disproportionately harm minorities. Biden’s Title IX changes, which treat students accused of sexual misconduct as guilty until proven, also disproportionately harm black college students. The systemic racism Biden has warned so much about is coming from inside the White House. In pursuing policies that make liberals feel good but are damaging when put in place, as both the eviction moratorium and Title IX changes are, Biden is perpetuating the very problem he claims to be so concerned about. The narrative around systemic racism somehow does not apply to these Democratic policies, proving once again that it is a political narrative and nothing more. That will remain true the next time Biden takes the podium to denounce another GOP voting law as being a new version of Jim Crow.)
