NORTHWEST HERALD
— McSweeney: Gov. Bruce Rauner should apologize for meeting with ‘known extremist’ Diane Evertsen David McSweeney attacks governor for meeting with ‘known extremist’ Diane Evertsen – ED KOMENDA  (DIERSEN: Why did Rauner meet privately with the leaders of the McHenry County Republican Party? What if Rauner met privately with the leaders of your Republican county party organization and/or with the leaders of your Republican township/ward party organization? In the 2002 Illinois Republican gubernatorial primary, Corrine Wood called Jim Ryan an extremist.)
http://www.nwherald.com/2018/05/08/mcsweeney-gov-bruce-rauner-should-apologize-for-meeting-with-known-extremist-diane-evertsen/adt9cfh/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A state lawmaker is lambasting Gov. Bruce Rauner after Illinois’ top leader met with members of the McHenry County Republican Party over the weekend in private. Rauner spent part of his Saturday at an invitation-only roundtable at the McHenry County GOP’s Crystal Lake headquarters – an event featuring a Who’s Who of party insiders, including: McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim, McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally and McHenry County Board Member Jim Kearns. But State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, took issue with someone else in attendance at the Saturday meet-up: McHenry County’s new chairwoman, Diane Evertsen, who at one time served as president of the Minutemen Midwest – an organization the Southern Poverty Law Center designated a “nativist extremist” group. “The governor should apologize for meeting with a known extremist,” said McSweeney, who heard about the meeting after it happened. McSweeney pointed to Evertsen’s association with Minutemen Midwest, which the SPLC named several times on its annual list of nativist extremist groups between 2007 and 2010. The Alabama-based civil rights nonprofit defines nativist extremist groups as organizations that go beyond mere advocacy to personally confront suspected undocumented immigrants or those who hire or help them. McSweeney said a simple Google search reveals the views of the group Evertsen chaired. The legislator characterized those views as “disgraceful.” Minutemen Midwest had a website – www.minutemenmidwest.com – but it has been taken down since its launch. While the site is dead, some of the material published there is recoverable with the internet archive known as the “Wayback Machine,” McSweeney said. McSweeney highlighted an article published on the website written by William H. Calhoun titled “Illegal Immigration: Third-World Invasion” – a piece suggesting the U.S. is under threat by immigrants of different “blood.” “Invaders from the Orient, Asia, Africa, Central and South America are invading the first world, and they are intent only upon conquest,” the article said. “With the exception of a very small upper class of pure European blood, most Mexicans are either Amerindian or Mestizo (mostly Amerindian with a few drops of Spaniard or African blood). They are not Western; genealogically they are Asiatic; and they despise the West.” The article appalled McSweeney, he said. “It’s probably the most extreme article that I’ve read in a long time,” McSweeney said. “It’s disgusting.” Evertsen, a 73-year-old Harvard grandmother who once served on the McHenry County Board and now serves on McHenry County College’s board of trustees, could not be reached for comment. The Northwest Herald also reached out to Gov. Rauner’s campaign communications director for comment, but campaign officials weren’t immediately available Tuesday. About 20 people attended the Saturday gathering, according to sources invited to the event.)

(FROM THE LETTER: Are you kidding me, Springfield? The state of Illinois is imploding at a frightening rate, and you’re focused on passing a bill that forces our schools to teach LGBT history? (Paid for by our outrageous property taxes, by the way.) This bill (SB3249) also requires schools to teach about the illegal deportation of Mexicans during the Great Depression and labor union contributions to our economy. And children will not be permitted to graduate eighth grade if they don’t receive this instruction. Holy political agenda, Democrats! But, perhaps you are sincerely interested in teaching our children an accurate and nondiscriminatory account of our history. If this is true, you must necessarily include a unit on the societal benefits that Catholics have contributed toward Illinois’ schools, hospitals and charities. The impact is quite significant. I would encourage anyone reading this to demand that your particular group be recognized in a mandatory history unit as well. After everyone feels good about being recognized, there might be a few minutes left in the school day for reading, writing and arithmetic.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-trying-to-deal-with-discrimination-face-backlash-1525604400
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Companies trying to rectify a legacy of discrimination are finding that some tactics are backfiring and sparking new grievances. The Wing, a women’s shared-office space and networking club, has drawn such ire. Its no-men-allowed membership policy for collaboration spaces in trendy New York neighborhoods is designed to attract like-minded women professionals who want to encourage and invest in one another. The Wing recently opened a Washington, D.C., location and there is a wait list for a future office in Los Angeles, the company says. In March, the New York City Human Rights Commission launched an investigation into the Wing’s practices, which include workshops on political organization and panels reserved for members featuring celebrities and U.S. legislators. Seth Hoy, a spokesman for the New York commission, confirmed the agency’s probe and declined to comment on it further. He says the agency works to ensure that businesses comply with laws prohibiting gender discrimination. The inquiry is one of the latest examples of how female-only initiatives and other diversity efforts are drawing objections from those who feel left out or challenge the idea that people in historically underrepresented groups need targeted resources to help them accelerate in their careers and are raising concerns that the programs unfairly exclude other people.)

WBBM NEWS RADIO
— Ives Says She Will Vote For Rauner, But Doesn’t Necessarily Think He Will Win – CRAIG DELLIMORE
https://wbbmnews.radio.com/articles/news/ives-says-she-will-vote-rauner-doesnt-necessarily-think-he-will-win
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Representative Jeanne Ives, who lost the narrow GOP Primary election to Governor Bruce Rauner, said he has her vote, but not necessarily her confidence, or that of other conservatives. Representative Jeanne Ives has not resolved her differences with Governor Rauner after their often bitter race. Still, she indicates she’ll vote for him in November. But she doesn’t necessarily expect him to win. “I’m a republican. I will vote for our republican nominee, but other folks are going to make their decisions differently and as I said in the primary, which I still believe is true today, there’s many conservatives who will just skip the top of the ticket, as they did in the Mark Kirk race, and vote Rauner out of office,” she said. Make no mistake, Ives feels that if democrat JB Pritzker wins, his plans for a progressive income tax will drive more people out of the state. “If we go down the road for the democrats. If we go to the progressive income tax, you can watch that you’ll have far more out migration…that is my prediction this year…because of that 32 percent tax increase,” Ives said. So she predicts this will be an interesting time for Illinois. Meanwhile, conservative and moderate republicans may clash over the future of the Illinois GOP as well. Governor Rauner is supporting Illinois GOP chairman Tim Schneider, a Cook County Commissioner, to continue in his role. “We have a very important vote coming up on May 19 as to who is going to be the leader of Illinois GOP. And obviously Governor Rauner has put forward Tim Schneider and many of us conservatives want an alternative to Mr. Schneider and so you have this inter-party feud going on,” she said. Ives said conservatives support Mark Shaw of Lake County over incumbent chairman Tim Scheider, and allies of the Governor are exerting pressure on GOP committeemen. She said the struggle continues.)

In 2015, the Des Plaines Elementary District 62 school board paid a highly regarded search firm $24,750 to help it find and ultimately hire Dr. Williams, who resigned a year and half into the job under allegations he sexually harassed five female district employees.)

https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511406107-bill-allowing-special-pension-allowance-for-17-chicago-police-fund-members-passes-house
(FROM THE ARTICLE: During Illinois’ colossal pension crisis, Democrats proposed to carve out funds for the Chicago Police Benefit Fund for work performed a decade ago. HB5177, sponsored by Rep. Kelly Burke (D-Evergreen Park), amends the Illinois Pension Code to allow for 17 police officers to receive a hearing to reconsider service credit for investigatory work they performed prior to 2008. . .“It’s actually unaffordable,” Ives said. The bill is just one of many examples over the past few years of that permits pension carve-outs for employees who want to move from one plan to another. “What you see here is the need for massive pension reform, not just at the state level, but really at the local level,” Ives said. The focus should not be on these 17 officers, according to Ives. “Our pension problems that are literally bankrupting local governments,” Ives said. Using Danville as an example of destroying pension debt, Ives said the town has seen a 112 percent increase in the cost of the local pension plans. “They have no idea how they are going to pay back the $105 million in debt they have accumulated, and Chicago is far worse off,” Ives said. Why should the board go back as far as 2008 to possibly reimburse the officers, Breen asked.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump’s federal agencies will allow companies to bring in an additional 15,000 foreign “guest workers” for use in landscaping, forestry, resorts, and seafood processing, say Maryland seafood executives. The expected offer of 15,000 visas “is very late, and it is not enough,” said Jack Brooks, owner of a seafood company, J.M. Clayton Company, in Cambridge, Md. Maryland’s crab industry has already gotten 300 of 500 H-2B workers it sought, but the absence of the 200 workers has generated an emotional editorial by the Baltimore Sun. The 15,000 extra workers will be added to the annual inflow of 66,000 H-2B visa workers, but few of the extra visas will go to the seasonal seafood industries in Maryland, Texas, and Alaska, Brooks told Breitbart News. The extra visas likely will be distributed via lottery, so the more numerous landscaping and resort companies are likely to win the largest shares of the cheaper workers, said Brooks, who has already received a set of H-2B visas for work this year. The worker giveaway to business is bad news for Republican politicians because it reduces the pressure on business to deliver wage increase to voters before the next election, said Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies.)

BLOOMBERG
— America is minting more millionaire retirees than ever – Suzanne Woolley (DIERSEN: My Civil Service Retirement System pension is $4,322/month and my federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy is $1,500/month for a total of $5,822/month. For me to buy an annuity that would pay me that much for life, it would cost me about $1 million.)
https://www.denverpost.com/2018/05/03/millionaire-retirees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One of every six retirees in the U.S. is a millionaire (if you include the value of their homes), according to the new report. Their average wealth has risen more than 100 percent since 1989, to $752,000, and the share of those who are millionaires has doubled. More retirees-62 percent-are enjoying life without physical or cognitive limitations, according to the data. That number is up from 49 percent in 1963, the first year such data was taken. . .Income inequality has remained about the same among retirees since 1989. The picture changed dramatically when a household’s financial assets came into play, however. A rising stock market led to a 42 percent rise in wealth inequality among older Americans. “People have held incomes and spending constant over time,” said Matt Fellowes, United Income’s founder and chief executive officer. “The wealthiest retirees are wealthier but are not spending more, relative to previous generations.” Fellowes believes many Americans are being unnecessarily frugal in their spending and are leading “overly contained” lives as a result. The gap between the wealthy and the ultra-wealthy has also widened. The wealth of the median millionaire rose by about 12 percent from 1989 to 2016, while the median millionaire’s equity position was swelling from 27 percent of financial accounts to 55 percent. The wealth of the top 1 percent of millionaires, meanwhile, more than doubled, from $14.9 million to $31.3 million, in 2016 dollars, as their equity positions jumped from 30 percent to 69 percent, according to the report. ”It’s clear that the dividends from being an investor are paying off for retirees fortunate enough to have savings and investments,” said Fellowes. “What’s discouraging is that those who are not saving or investing are just getting left progressively farther and farther behind as each successive generation enters retirement.”)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— “RAUNER PARTY” LEADERSHIP CALLS ON STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE TO RE-ELECT TIM SCHNEIDER FOR PARTY CHAIRMAN (DIERSEN: What does this say to those who voted for Ives?)
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/05/rauner-party-leadership-calls-on-state-central-committee-to-re-elect-tim-schneider-for-party-chairma.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In an email sent out Tuesday evening to members of the State Central Committee from IL GOP elected officials and statewide candidates calls for “Rauner Party” Chairman Tim Schneider to be re-elected. The appeal boasts how the Republican organizations work better together than ever before under Schneider’s leadership at the IL GOP, but does not mention that the IL GOP has lost any meaningful financial support from grassroots and Illinois rank and file under Schneider’s leadership. The IL GOP’s latest filings show reports less than 10 individual contributions in the past six months. As a result, the Illinois Republican Party is owned and directed by its biggest donor, Governor Rauner. Chairman Schneider appears to be fine with that. And evidently, all the statewide IL GOP candidates and every Republican member of Illinois’ congressional caucus agrees with Rauner’s funding and political strategy because they all signed onto the plea to support Schneider’s re-election. The IL GOP is divided between Rauner loyalists and the conservative base after a heated primary challenge by State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) – and the letter does not reflect respect or appeal to those Republicans that are opposed to the governor’s IL GOP platform-rejecting political philosophy. The letter from the leadership of the now-dubbed “Rauner Party” urging support for Schneider as distributed:)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A state senator from central Illinois who is running for governor as a third party candidate filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Republican leadership, alleging taxpayer funded services are being withheld from him. Sen. Sam McCann’s suit against Senate Republican leader Bill Brady says he was “expelled” from the GOP caucus after announcing his bid. McCann says he no longer has access to legislative staff and other support he previously received. McCann contends that withholding those services violates his right to free speech and creates two classes of voters: those who have full representation in the legislature and his constituents, who now have a senator that “is only allowed to participate to a severely limited degree.” A Brady spokesman late Tuesday said he hadn’t been notified of the lawsuit. McCann is running for governor under the Conservative Party banner, contending Republican Gov. Rauner has abandoned conservative voters by expanding taxpayer funding of abortion and supporting legislation to protect immigrants in the country illegally.)

I never even noticed. Such was not the case with the Rys sisters, who — for unexplained reasons — were treated as pariahs their entire school careers in Monee. Their isolation and anguish were all-encompassing. No one ever intervened. In grammar school no one would eat lunch with the girls, or play with them or sit with them on the bus. CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Stop treating our homes and income as if they were sins – HILARY GOWINS (DIERSEN: According to this article, “If you want less of something, tax it.” What do you say to those who oppose increasing taxes on a) booze, gambling, and other vices and b) fancy restaurant meals, entertainment, vacations, and other immediate pleasures? Beyond overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have spent lots of their time and money on the aforesaid. Consequently, many, if not most of them have health and/or financial problems.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180502/OPINION/180509979
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you want less of something, tax it. That holds true for things targeted with sin taxes—Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s main argument in favor of her soft-drink tax was that it would limit consumption and improve public health. It also holds true for things much more consequential than soda, like jobs. Illinois ranked fifth in the Midwest and 14th nationally in private-sector job creation from January 2010 to January 2011, the first 12 months of the recession recovery. But that changed when state politicians enacted a “temporary” income tax hike in January 2011. Since then, 82,000 people have dropped out of Illinois’ workforce, a decline of 1.2 percent. The rest of the country’s labor force has grown by over 8.7 million people, a 6 percent increase. After the 2011 tax hike, what seemed like an economic recovery in Illinois ground to a halt. Jobs growth rebounded slightly after the 2011 income tax expired in January 2015, but the damage was done, and the 2017 income tax hike didn’t help. Illinois ranked 42nd in employment growth last year. “Tax more, get less” also applies to Illinois’ housing market. Illinois homeowners’ real property tax burden—the percentage of household income paid in property taxes—grew six times faster than incomes grew from 2008 to 2015. An hour outside of Chicago, Phil and Laura Valdez say, for instance, that their property tax bill in Sandwich (population 7,400) accounts for 12 percent of their income. That chunk keeps growing, even though their home value has dropped by $90,000 since 1999.)

KANE COUNTY CONNECTS
— NEW WEB PAGE LETS YOU SEE YOUR PROPERTY-TAX INFO, PAY TAXES ONLINE (DIERSEN: According to your assessor, what is your home worth, how much is your 2017 property tax bill, and what does your property tax money go to? According to my assessor, my home at 915 Cove Court in Wheaton is worth $474,200. According to Zillow, my home is worth $474,533. My 2017 property tax bill is $10,913 (approximately 2.3% of market value) with a $6,000 residential exemption and a $5,000 senior exemption. The property tax goes as follows:

— $7,177 (66%) School District 200
— $1,416 (13%) City of Wheaton
— $1,046 (10%) Wheaton Park District
— $358 (3%) College of DuPage
— $177 (2%) DuPage Forest Preserve
— $163 (1%) School District 200 Pension Fund
— $155 (1%) County of DuPage
— $104 (1%) Milton Township Roads
— $82 (1%) Wheaton Park District Pension Fund
— $66 (1%) Milton Township
— $169 (2%) 7 other taxing bodies

What if Diersen hinted/implied/argued/shouted that he would serve as an operative for whoever gave him the most money?)
http://edgarcountywatchdogs.com/2018/05/algonquin-township-road-district-funds-for-political-newsletter-subscription/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When we started the Edgar County Watchdogs our Board of Directors made it very clear that our agenda must be focused on compliance with the law and exposing those who violate it, regardless of political party. We also agreed to never accept funding from people who they themselves had a political agenda and wished to use us as the means to get their message out. Our goal was simple. Help those who ask for help with fixing known problems within their local government. At the time we had no idea this would become a full-time venture. Illinois is a target rich environment when it comes to public corruption so rest assured there is no shortage of things to investigate and expose. However, there is a shortage of State’s Attorney’s that have the courage to step up and take on the corruption within their own county. While reviewing bills paid by the Algonquin Township Road District, one bill, ok hundreds, but for this article, one bill, in particular, jumped out at us as we have written about this issue before on other public bodies. In a time when most mainstream media is no longer trusted, we see more and more people turning to social media and other independent sources to get their news. We have seen our viewer numbers almost doubling each year so we too understand people’s frustration with the media. Former Algonquin Township Road Commissioner Bob Miller turned to “Ahead of our Time Publishing” by Rich Miller and his online blog newsletter, “Capital Fax”. What public purpose does a private political publication provide to the taxpayers of Illinois? What statutory authority does a Road District have to spend your hard earned tax dollars on a private political blogger publication? (Note there are a lot of other subscriptions to talk about that Miller had that also have no public purpose or statutory authority) Now I don’t fault Rich Miller for making money and creating a business with his Capital Fax publication, but how on earth can the Algonquin Township Road District justify spending Road District money on a political blogger subscription? I wonder if the local McHenry County Blogger Cal Skinner could get away with charging his local public bodies for his news reporting? And just about now all the naysayers are going to justify tax dollars for the local newspaper. Guess what folks, it is not the taxpayers obligation to have their money spent on any publication, subscription, and/or memberships in associations that does not have statutory authority. In a future article we will expose the illegal spending on memberships to organizations by this same public body. You can view the $500.00 bill below or download it here.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I’m trying hard to swear less here. I figure I should be more statesmanlike, but, man, it’s hard. Get a load of House Bill 4412 for SURS, the Illinois university pension. It’s a bill that would require the pension board to make best efforts to “ensure that the racial and ethnic makeup of [SURS’] senior administrative staff represents the racial and ethnic makeup of the System’s membership.” Prairie State Wire’s article on this is linked here. In other words, look at the race of people in the pension and discriminate when you hire against people who don’t match up. What possible sense does that make? Has it occurred to sponsors that members of the pension fund generally were hired years and years ago when things were, to put it nicely, less inclusive? It’s the new arrivals and groups historically discriminated against who will be hurt. The discrimination that would result if the bill becomes law would be particularly hard on minorities that arrived in large numbers in recent years, particularly Hispanics and Asians. Most perplexing is that the main sponsors ought to know better. They are Carol Ammons (D-Chicago), who is African American; Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago), who is Puerto Rican; and Elgie Sims (D-Chicago), who is African American. Then there’s David McSweeney, also a sponsor, and a conservative Republican from Arlington Heights. Baffling. Extend the logic of this bill to other pensions and consider the absurdity. Many, if not most, of the 671 pensions around Illinois undoubtedly are made up predominately of ethnic groups that historically were common in their area or that dominated particular professions for whatever reason. Should they discriminate in hiring against those who don’t match up? Consider the Chicago firefighters’ pension. Based on personal research, it’s comprised of about 6.4 billion Southside Irish, 96.4% of whom are my relatives. Should the pension’s hiring goal be to match that? If so, good luck, you Padillas, Dabrowskis, Lombardis, Kapoors, Weinsteins, Kims, Wangs, Browns and all the rest.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Illinois House passes bill to require race and ethnicity-based quotas at state universities pension system (DIERSEN: The Republican Party platform promotes equal opportunity, that is, no race, no gender, no ethnicity, no etc. based preference giving.)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511399963-illinois-house-passes-bill-to-require-race-and-ethnicity-based-quotas-at-state-universities-pension-system
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinoisans of Italian, Mexican, French and Eastern European descent could be in line for top management jobs with one of the state’s largest public pension systems if a bill becomes law. House Bill 4412, sponsored by State Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Champaign) and State Rep. Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago), would require the Illinois’ State Universities Retirement System (SURS) board to institute race and ethnicity-based hiring quotas for senior staff. It passed the Illinois House last week by a vote of 70-26. Ammons and Arroyo’s bill would “ensure that the racial and ethnic makeup of the System’s senior administrative staff represents the racial and ethnic makeup of the System’s membership.” “Senior administrative staff” would include the board’s Executive Director, Chief Investment Officer, General Counsel, Freedom of Information Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Member Services, Director of Outreach, Director of Human Resources, Director of Internal Audit, Director of Operations, the Director of Application Development and Research. A review of SURS nine current senior staff members shows two-thirds are likely of English or Irish descent. SURS Chief Investment Officer Doug Wesley, General Counsel/FOIA Officer Bianca T. Green, CTO Jefferey Saiger, Chief Benefits Officer Suzanne Mayer, Human Resources Director Brenda Dunn and Director of Internal Audit Steven L. Hayward all have surnames of English or Irish heritage. Martin Noven of Chicago, SURS’ current Executive Director, is likely of Nordic/Scandinavian or English/Irish descent. Director of Members Services Angie Lieb is likely of German decent. SURS’ CFO Phyllis L. Walker is African-American. Ammons husband, Aaron, is a member of the SURS Board. He’s a community activist turned Urbana alderman who is now running for Champaign County Clerk. In 2015, Gov. Pat Quinn expunged Ammons’ criminal record on his last day in office, two days before his wife was sworn in to the Illinois House. She formerly held his seat on the Urbana City Council. The Illinois’ Department of Insurance’s Biennial Report on public pensions reported that SURS is effectively insolvent, with $23.2 billion in debt. In 2016, it received $1.6 billion from Illinois taxpayers, earned $79 million on its investments and paid out $2.4 billion in benefits and expenses to retired employees from Illinois’ public colleges and universities. Only English-Irish need apply? Six of nine senior staff at the State Universities Retirement System are of English or Irish descent, according to an analysis by Prairie State Wire.)

http://dailycaller.com/2018/05/01/facebook-newsfeed-trusted-sources-dial-up/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “We put [that data] into the system, and it is acting as a boost or a suppression, and we’re going to dial up the intensity of that over time,” Zuckerberg said. “We feel like we have a responsibility to further [break] down polarization and find common ground.” In January, Zuckerberg announced two key algorithm changes to Facebook’s newsfeed feature that have boosted a minority of news outlets while harming their competitors. First, Facebook slashed news articles’ share of the newsfeed from five percent to four percent in the coming months. Second, Facebook began boosting certain “trusted” news outlets and suppressing other, ostensibly less trustworthy sources. Conservative and right-wing publishers “were hit the hardest” by the algorithm change, tech website The Outline concluded in a lengthy report published March 5. At the same time, “the engagement numbers of most predominantly liberal publishers remained unaffected,” the report found. Facebook has no plans of making public its list of “trusted” news sources, a Facebook spokesperson previously told TheDCNF.)

https://www.theblaze.com/news/2018/05/01/facebook-will-now-start-ranking-news-organizations-by-their-trustworthiness
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, announced on Tuesday that the company is rolling out a program rating the trustworthiness of news organizations based on user feedback. Content will be ranked and either promoted or suppressed depending on their performance according to surveys filled out by Facebook members. Zuckerberg says the new initiative is part of an effort to help users find “common ground” following criticism that his company’s platform has damaged democracy. He said, “It’s not useful if someone’s just kind of repeating the same thing and attempting to polarize or drive people to extremes.” Tens of thousands of Facebook employees will begin to monitor posts to minimize fake news and reduce propaganda, and artificial intelligence will also be utilized in the effort. The company has vowed to spend billions on the sweeping change. . .This comes among rising complaints from conservative outlets who claim their traffic has been suppressed by the social media giant. In March, Fox News host Tucker Carlson said, “Facebook is not a neutral host; it has a political agenda. It’s an act of ideological warfare, and it’s far more worrying than anything that Cambridge Analytica has done, or is accused of doing.” But a Yale psychologist, David Rand, conducted an experiment with a colleague which tested the impact on news sites following the initial implementation of Facebook’s new user poll. The results found that sources like Fox News were found to be trustworthy sources, while propaganda sites like left-leaning Daily Kos and right-leaning Breitbart were rated as untrustworthy by the researchers’ poll.)

HUFFINGTON POST
— CEO Mark Zuckerberg Says Facebook Will Rank News Outlets By Trustworthiness The social media titan says the rankings will determine placement in its News Feed feature. – Lydia Polgreen (DIERSEN: According to my critics/opponents, the only news outlets that are trustworthy are those that they manipulate/dominate. Because they cannot manipulate/dominate Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails, they do everything that they can to destroy Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-media-trust_us_5ae90e25e4b00f70f0ed0725
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a meeting Tuesday with media executives that the company has begun implementing a system of ranking news organizations by trust, relying on user surveys to determine which news sources are “broadly trusted.” News organizations that scored higher on the ranking would be promoted in Facebook’s News Feed, while those with lower trust scores would be suppressed, Zuckerberg said. The effort is part of Facebook’s pledge to “take a broader view of our responsibilities,” he said after a bruising year in which the platform has been criticized for being used to undermine elections, foment division and spread hate speech. . .Zuckerberg said that Facebook has a responsibility to help reduce polarization and help people find “common ground” and that a shared set of facts and a common understanding of truth is essential for democracy. “It’s not useful if someone’s just kind of repeating the same thing and attempting to polarize or drive people to the extremes,” Zuckerberg said. He said he hoped Facebook could help find sustainable business models for journalism and acknowledged the company’s responsibility to “support the institution of journalism.” The rise of mammoth technology platforms like Facebook and Google has obliterated the balance sheets of news organizations across the globe as they suck up the vast majority of digital advertising dollars. But Facebook has no plans to begin paying news companies for the journalism the media publish on Facebook. “I’m not sure that makes sense,” Zuckerberg said. Cable companies pay news organizations like CNN, MSNBC and Fox News lucrative carriage fees in exchange for their content, and news executives like Rupert Murdoch and Jonah Peretti of BuzzFeed have begun agitating for Facebook to begin paying them as well. And while Facebook has made it easier for news organizations to sell subscriptions on its platforms, it has offered little to news outlets that rely on digital advertising to provide their news reports free to readers. He said Facebook plans to spend “billions and billions of dollars” to combat fake news, misinformation and hate speech. “We’re going to have tens of thousands of people doing content review,” Zuckerberg said. Facebook is developing artificial intelligence tools to combat these problems on its platforms, but Zuckerberg acknowledged that it would take “five to 10 years” for that technology to be effective.)

https://illinoisfamilyaction.org/2018/04/news-from-the-illinois-political-front-lines-part-1-last-weeks-gop-county-conventions/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On the importance of electing leaders that support the entire Illinois GOP platform (both economic and social issues), Klaas said, “You can’t be fiscally conservative without being morally responsible.” One of the local leaders I spoke with explained that the SCC vote that takes place every four years is the most important duty they have. Why? Because the state-wide leadership too often recruits the kind of candidates who not only do not support our state party platform, but typically lack leadership abilities and prove it when they get elected and show no capacity to even comprehend the power of their bully pulpit let alone become informed and vote in line with the party’s platform on legislation when they’re in Springfield. Is there a conservative majority on the SCC? It’s very close now, but regardless, a government conservative majority can be accomplished in four years.)

And when it comes to Casten’s finances, Republicans are already on the attack. “Sean Casten using his daddy’s money to ensure that a qualified female candidate has no shot to make it out of a primary is both unoriginal and deeply concerning,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Maddie Anderson said in a statement. “In the so-called ‘year of the woman’ – it’s a shame that Casten resorted to attacking Kelly Maseski using dark money once he realized his own message wasn’t enough to carry him across the finish line,” she added.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) wants you to have a good job. He wants everyone to have a good job. In fact, he wants to guarantee it, and he’s followed Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Cory Booker (N.J.), two other potential Democratic presidential hopefuls, in proposing some sort of program to provide a highly paid job with the federal government to every American who wants one. Unlike other ideas gaining vogue on the left, this actually seems vaguely centrist in its premise, despite its venerable socialist history. Democrats, after all, are the party of big entitlement spending, and Republicans are the party that says “Get a job!” If you smash those two things together, you get something that sounds kind of . . . moderate. At least until you get into the details. Those details, unfortunately, are a devil. Sanders wants the government to provide guaranteed jobs at $15 an hour, plus benefits. His office did not, a representative demurely told Post reporter Jeff Stein, yet have cost estimates for this proposal.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Winchester retains counsel to challenge voting procedures in GOP Central Committee race – W.J. Kennedy
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511398631-sources-winchester-retains-counsel-to-challenge-voting-procedures-in-gop-central-committee-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sources have told Prairie State Wire that Bob Winchester has retained counsel to challenge the voting procedures used in his race for Republican State Central Committee in the 15th Congressional District, which the Illinois Republican Party claims was won by Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). The first step in the legal action is expected to be an appeal to the Illinois State Board of Elections, which under law, must certify the votes in party elections. Among other charges, Winchester is expected to challenge the use of votes by acclamation in some counties — a move that gives the candidate with more than half of the votes the entire final tally, which violates party rules and may violate state law. Republican sources said that the Republican Party put up Chapin to run against the incumbent Winchester as punishment for his backing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in the Republican primary against Gov. Bruce Rauner. Winchester, who could not be reached for comment, also opposes the re-election of GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. The party’s 18 central committee people, one representing each congressional district, is scheduled to meet May 19 to elect a state chairman, and sources say that Schneider’s re-election bid is in jeopardy. Mark Shaw, Lake County Republican chairman and central committeeman in the 10th Congressional District, said that people should not jump to conclusions about the outcome of the race between Winchester and Rose. “Just because the party said Chapin won doesn’t mean he won,” Shaw said. “Until May 19, there is no party governing board, and Chaplin can’t just show up on that day and act like he’s a committeeman. The results have to be certified first, and I expect the board will find a lot of irregularities in the voting process.” He added that he knows Winchester as a man of “integrity and honesty” and he would not be taking legal action unless he was convinced that election law procedures were violated. Results of the election show that Winchester received zero votes in nine of 33 counties, including four of the 10 most populated, a result that Shaw and others said would be impossible. Several counties, sources said, failed to even offer Winchester as a candidate for consideration. In Fayette County, home to Randy Pollard, Rauner’s downstate director, Winchester was not presented as an option. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Rose also received zero votes in 13 counties carried 100 percent by Winchester. In all, 22 of 33 counties voted by acclamation, representing 63 percent of Rose’s vote and 59 percent of Winchester’s. County votes are weighted based on their respective turnout in the March primary. Republican sources also said that aides to U.S. Rep. — Democrats’ deadline to override Rauner gun bill veto comes on same day as Second Amendment rally – Monique Garcia (DIERSEN: Democrats want you to buy pot instead of firearms and ammunition. Needless-to-say, no one who uses pot should be allowed a) to own any kind of firearm, ammunition, or weapon; b) to operate any kind of vehicle or equipment, c) to hold any kind of government or political job or office, d) etc. To use pot is to knowingly and willfully damage your brain.)

— No pay raises for DuPage County Board members but countywide elected officials to get 2% hike – Gary Gibula (DIERSEN: Are/were you accused of being overpaid? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always accused me of being overpaid. In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-dupage-salaries-freezes-increases-st-0425-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Board members Elizabeth Chaplin, Tonia Khouri and Brian Krajewski voted against the pay increases. “There’s no justification for giving out those raises,” Chaplin said. “Our county-wides are some of the highest-paid in the state.” “They do a fantastic job, but I think they’re already very well compensated and money is getting tighter and tighter for us,” Khouri said. “We were $3 million short from the state this year, so we need to watch every dollar. For me, it’s an economic issue.” In 2016, County Board members voted themselves 2 percent pay increases, which went into effect in December of that year and again in December of last year. Critics have charged that board salaries are too high in comparison with other nearby counties. Others, however, say the pay is in line with other counties when viewed on a per capita basis. “We understand these are tough times and we don’t feel it’s appropriate to give a pay raise to ourselves,” County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said. “We work very hard, we’ve cut our budget, we’ve cut taxes, we’ve reduced headcount and we’ve got a very compelling story to tell about good government here. We’re not in it for the money, we’re in it to serve.” In other county business, District 1 representative Paul Fichtner has resigned from the County Board due to a job change. Cronin said a replacement will be appointed in two weeks.)

My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Just over a month after her narrow primary election loss to incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, state Rep. Jeanne Ives said she’ll continue to spread her message across the state. “I have a responsibility. I can’t just hide,” said Ives, a Wheaton Republican, during a stop at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel to address members of the Restore Our Constitution political group. “I’m not going to hide or go away. I’m not going to do that.” Ives said she plans to tour the state raising awareness of issues such as pensions and fiscal responsibility, and campaigning for fellow Republican candidates in an effort to win a majority in the state House of Representatives. How she will do the latter remains undetermined. She said she has already endorsed several candidates and given them information to use in political ads and talking points, such as their Democratic opponents’ voting records and ratings with different business groups. Ives said it is likely she will also start to make campaign visits with Republican candidates as the election season heads into the summer.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: State leaders are trying to bring more skilled workers to the state. Governor Rauner and Lieutenant Governor Sanguinetti are touring Europe and the state, respectively, to seek answers on vocational and training programs for Illinois youth. YouthBuild Mclean County in Central Illinois is one program close to home that is currently fulfilling the requirements. “Many decades ago our school system used to offer apprenticeship tracks”, said Lt. Governor Sanguinetti. “Over time we lost that… We need to bring back those types of programs to Illinois.” Governor Rauner is currently in Germany at an apprenticeship program learning the ways of the system and how it functions. Sanguinetti says that a four year program is not for everyone and allowing our youth the right to choose what they want to do at an early age will be more beneficial to their future. “For many of our youth, access and opportunity is not looking very bright,” said Sanguinetti. She went on to say “a place like YouthBuild gives them the tools that they will need to succeed in life in a non traditional way.”)

DAILY HERALD
— Some raises, some pay freezes for DuPage County officials – Robert Sanchez
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180424/some-raises-some-pay-freezes-for-dupage-county-officials–
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Salaries will be frozen for a dozen DuPage County Board members and the chairman for at least the next four years. Meanwhile, several countywide officials will get 2 percent annual pay hikes during each of the next two years before their pay is frozen in fiscal 2021 and 2022. The raises — and freezes — were approved Tuesday when the county board set pay scales for the sheriff, treasurer, county clerk, county board chairman and 12 county board members for the next four years. All the positions are up for election in November. DuPage board members will continue to make $52,102. They also are eligible to receive health insurance and a pension through the county. The board chairman is the only countywide elected official who won’t get a pay raise; the position pays $131,559 a year. As for other countywide officials, the county clerk and treasurer will have their annual salaries increase by 2 percent to $148,395 when fiscal 2019 begins on Dec. 1. Their pay will increase to $151,363 for fiscal 2020. The sheriff will be paid $171,462 for fiscal 2019 and $174,891 for fiscal 2020. Also on Tuesday, the county board agreed to increase the amount DuPage contributes to the annual salary for the regional superintendent of schools. Darlene Ruscitti gets an annual salary of $113,900 from the state. The county then pays her an additional amount. Starting July 1, 2019, the amount will increase by 2 percent to $33,246. It will increase by another 2 percent to $33,911 in 2020.)

As part of the settlement, Cronin said: Liberty Systems will not be paid for the kits that supplied the ender cards. Three other contracts with Liberty Systems will be terminated immediately. The commission will seek other bids for election supplies to be used in the November election and Liberty Systems will not be considered. The company will repair or replace 167 machines damaged by the faulty ender cards. The company will compensate the county for the overtime costs incurred on election night. . .In addition to the settlement, Cronin said the commission is acting on his request to bring in additional staff for election oversight.)
— How state lawmakers are trying to stop political patronage at tollway – Marni Pyke (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always promoted patronage. In my defense, I do not ask for such money and I do not accept such money. He who pays the piper calls the tunes, and I do not want any individual, organization, or company to call my tunes. Further, I have enough time (10+ hours a day, 70+ hours a week, 300+ hours a month, 3,650+ hours a year, 36,500+ hours a decade) and money (thousands of dollars each year) to put the emails together and send them out each and every morning and each and every evening free of charge and without any advertising. Coleman (DIERSEN: The federal government requires all it employees to take lots of diversity and cultural sensitivity training. The training glorifies and praises those who are NOT Protestant, NOT conservative, NOT patriotic, NOT Republican, NOT American, NOT White, NOT male, NOT older, NOT rich, NOT gun owners, NOT German American, and those whose ancestors have NOT been in America for a long time.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/lake-county-news-sun/news/ct-lns-waukegan-60-diversity-st-0421-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The teacher, who is white, retold the rhyme, using the racial slur, during a February vocabulary lesson, Alajakis said. A student then reported the teacher’s use of the slur to the school principal, Alajakis said. The teacher was pulled from the classroom during an investigation into the matter, and later temporarily suspended, Alajakis said. He also was ordered to take cultural sensitivity training and moved to another building, Alajakis said. The teacher has not yet completed the training because the district is still working to identify a course, Alajakis said. Nevertheless, the incident is emblematic of a larger problem at Waukegan District 60, retired Waukegan administrator Harlene Shipley said. District officials should place a greater focus on cultural diversity training so that teachers can better understand their pupils, Shipley said. As another example, Shipley also pointed to a group of former Waukegan High School students who had addressed the school board in February about providing training and specialized resources aimed at students living in the country without legal permission. They also spoke about district staff not understanding them and what they’re going through, Shipley said. If teachers underwent diversity and cultural awareness training they would be less likely to speak insensitively, to know where potential pitfalls existed and to find educational opportunities in cultural items such as the new “Black Panther” movie, Shipley said.)

It appears clear that, regardless of whoever wins in November, the next governor will be a considerably less-wealthy multimillionaire than the candidate who started the race. I would suggest that instead of spending countless millions on radio and TV ads, polling data and opponent research, we post the Illinois governorship on eBay. The job appears headed to the highest bidder anyway.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20180421/the-tax-bill-double-whammy
(FROM THE LETTER: It is ironic that the master architect of the tax cut, who significantly reduced the popular property tax deduction in the first place, would now promote himself as a champion of taxpayers’ rights. His use of taxpayer dollars to fund his self-promotion campaign is a double whammy for District 6 constituents. Roskam is tone deaf to his constituents’ views. Why does he think that all of those people waited in long lines at the end of the year to prepay property taxes? Maybe he thinks they had nothing better to do with their time during the holidays. What about the many families in District 6 that couldn’t prepay property taxes even if they wanted to. Who has an extra $10,000 or more lying around for this kind of expenditure when they are saving for their children’s college, a 401(K), or possibly even their mortgage payment?)

https://www.fool.com/retirement/2018/04/21/the-real-reason-millennials-arent-saving-enough-fo.aspx
(FROM THE ARTICLE: While noting that 66% of millennials have nothing saved for retirement, the report provides plenty of evidence that the shoddy state of their nest eggs has relatively little to do with millennial savings habits. Fact is, many millennials simply aren’t eligible to join their employer’s retirement plan — and without that extra support, it’s much tougher to save for retirement.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/governors-race-price-tag-150-million-and-its-only-half-over/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, who gave Rauner a run for his money in the primary, spent about $12.58 per vote. She garnered 341,836 statewide votes, while spending about $4.3 million since first announcing her run. Ives received $3.926 million in contributions, with $2.5 million from Richard Uihlein and $20,000 from conservative radio host Dan Proft. Illinois Policy Institute CEO John Tillman also contributed $5,000 to Ives’ campaign. The bulk of Ives’ campaign money — $2.74 million — was spent on advertising. She also spent $385,680 on a pamphlet called “The Governor You Don’t Know: The Other Side of Bruce Rauner,” which was published and sent out to voters’ homes.)

— Rauner spent four times more than Ives en route to narrow primary victory
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-jb-pritzker-cash-20180417-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner spent over four times more than state Rep. Jeanne Ives in the months before his narrow primary victory on March 20. The first-term governor spent about $17.7 million in the first quarter, according to campaign records filed late Monday. That’s compared with about $4.3 million spent by Ives, who lost by just three percentage points. And Democrat J.B. Pritzker spent nearly double what Rauner did, reporting $34 million in expenses this year, far more than state Sen. Daniel Biss’ $5.8 million and Kenilworth businessman Chris Kennedy’s $3.9 million. Rauner starts the fall campaign with about $38.5 million in his campaign fund for what some observers predict could be the most expensive governor campaign in history. Pritzker showed about $8.1 million in the bank at the start of the month. He’s given his campaign $7 million since the primary ended, bringing his self-funding total to $76.5 million.)

https://www.illinoispolicy.org/more-than-100-township-governments-file-in-opposition-to-township-consolidation-bill/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One common critique of consolidation measures by government officials is that services would be diminished. But HB 3133 provides that the responsibilities and obligations of a dissolved township be transferred to its receiving county, suggesting that residents could expect continued delivery of public services at a reduced cost. This concept is not without precedent: DuPage County has eliminated multiple units of local government, while consolidating the services of others, since the passage of a 2013 consolidation law that only applied to DuPage County. In a 2015 report, Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti held up the DuPage example as a model for fiscal reform for other counties. Sure enough, lawmakers representing Lake and McHenry counties successfully pushed through the General Assembly a similar consolidation bill that extended much of DuPage County’s consolidation powers to both counties.)

Because they make tax laws for all of us, all U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators should be required to prepare their own tax returns, and they if fail/refuse to do that, they should be barred from having anything to do with tax laws. I have prepared my own tax returns since I was 16 years old in 1965. I have filed itemized returns since I was 24 year old in 1973. I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. I worked for GAO on audits of IRS 1986-1988 at the GS-13 Step 1-3 levels, currently $96,403-$102,830. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I earned master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980. I paid less federal income tax 1972-1977 because I itemized and my wife and I have paid less federal income tax since 1978 because we have itemized. However, because of the marriage penalty, my wife and I have paid more federal income tax since 1978. It seems that those who are not married and those whose spouse has little or no income want to keep the marriage penalty or even increase it. It seems that those who pay little or no real estate tax and/or state income tax want those deductions to be capped. — How WWI was fought in Chicago’s ethnic neighborhoods – Ron Grossman (DIERSEN: What is your national origin? During the 1840s and 1850s, all my ancestors immigrated to northeast Illinois from what is now Germany. Of course, needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always used that against me. In my defense, I stress that my grandfather on my father’s side fought the Germans during WWI, that my uncles on my mother’s side fought the Germans during WWII, and that my father would have fought the Germans during WWII if he had not been 4-F. Further, according to http://dna.ancestry.com , my ancestry is 33% Europe West, 28% Scandinavia, 24% Great Britain, 11% Ireland, 2% Europe East, 1% Finland/Northwest Russia, and 1% Italy/Greece.)

BUSINESS TODAY
— Facebook to allow political ads from verified advertisers only (DIERSEN: Will Facebook deem my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to be advertisements for the Republican National Committee (RNC), Illinois Republican Party (IRP), DuPage County Republican Central Committee (DCRCC), and Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC)? Will Facebook prohibit me from posting anything without authorization from the RNC, IRP, DCRCC, and MTRCC?)
https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/facebook-to-make-political-ads-more-transparent/story/274338.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Advertisers will be prohibited from running political ads – electoral or issue-based – until they are authorized,” Facebook said, announcing plans to make advertisements on its platform more transparent. “In addition, these ads will be clearly labelled in the top left corner as Political Ad. Next to it we will show paid for by information. We started testing the authorization process this week, and people will begin seeing the label and additional information in the US later this spring,” it said. Facebook said it is also investing in artificial intelligence and adding more people to help find advertisers that should have gone through the authorization process but did not. “We realize we won’t catch every ad that should be labelled, and we encourage anyone who sees an unlabeled political ad to report it. People can do this by tapping the three dots at the top right corner of the ad and selecting Report Ad,” it said. Facebook also announced that people who manage pages with large number of followers will need to be verified. Those who manage large pages that do not clear the process will no longer be able to post, it said, adding that this will make it much harder for people to administer a page using a fake account.)

AXIOS
— How Google and Facebook drive internet traffic by topic (DIERSEN: Who says that what you do to help others is “inappropriate, unethical, and unprofessional?” In Illinois, GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails drive more internet traffic to conservative websites like http://www.illinoisreview.typepad.com/ than anything else. The more text from an article that I put an email, the more likely that readers will click on the link for that article. GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails do not include paragraph breaks or pictures.)
https://www.axios.com/how-google-and-facebook-drive-internet-traffic-by-topic-1513302486-57f12c0b-c248-4f2c-ac44-76e4d8b616ca.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook and Google, which together drive the majority of web traffic on the internet, send traffic to different topics, research from digital analytics company Parse.ly shows. Facebook overwhelmingly drives lifestyle and entertainment news traffic, while Google largely drives business, tech and sports news traffic. When it comes to politics, Facebook is more likely to refer readers to presidential political stories, while Google is more likely to refer to stories about state and local politics. . .Why it matters: The combined size of Google and Facebook make it nearly impossible for web publishers to reach an audience without their help. But even though they rely on them for traffic, publishers research from Digital Content Next, the trade association that represents premium publishers, finds that platforms drive just 14% of revenue. Who are the “other” referrers? Parse.ly actively tracks news referrals in a daily-updated referral dashboard. These publishers tend to drive the most traffic to news sites on a daily basis:)
